Vapours,andrumours,and"windsof doctrine,"wereoldinthedaysofthe Apostles.Ithasbeenreservedfor theageof manufacture,boastedmaterialism,and andmotors,toseehardheadedbusinessmenledintomorris dancingandfebrilediabolism,bythe seancesofawatered-downwitchery.
Evenoutsideofthedomainoffaith. itisapitifulthing,toseemenwho otherwiseareashard-headedas ThomasGradgrind,becomingsoairily spiritual,astobesatisfiedliterally withashadow,insteadofasubstance.

Theworldmaybeloathtolistentothispaternalinvitation,butitwill listen.Itwillpauseinitsmadrushandstopinitsmaterialpursuitstogive athoughttothethingsofthespirit.Afterall,mankindwasnotentirelyun- preparedforthePapalmessage.Ithasbeensoberedbysadexperiencesand chastenedbymuchsuffering.ThereiseveryprobabilitythattheHolyYear. solemnlydeclaredbytheVicarofChrist,willbesuccessful.Byitthe dawnofaneweramaybeinaugurated,anerathatwillwitnessthegradual disappearanceofreligiousdissension,thatwillsoftennationalantagonisms andestablishareignofpeace,andthatwilllifttheworldoutofthedepths ofmiseryintowhichithasfallen.Millionsofvoiceswillriseinprayer abovethedinofthisearthlybabel,andtheFatherinheavenwillgive eartotheentreatiesofHischildren.
