'1hesixthanniversaryofthedeath ofMr.JohnRedmond,theIrishleader, wascommemoratedinhisnativetown ofWexfordbyoneofthegreatestdemonstrationseverheldthere.

Thirteenspecialtrainswererequiredtoconveythevisitors,anditisestimatedthatthenumberwhotravelled inthismannerwas10,000,whilstat least25,000peoplevisitedWexfordfor theoccasion.

Mr.JohnDillon,Mr.JosephDevlin, andCapt-W.A.Redmond,T.D.,were enthusiasticallycheeredbythegreat crowdsduringthecourseoftheday's proceedings.

Afeatureofthecelebrationwasthe eloquenttributeofMr.JohnDillonto thedeadIrishleader

"IllustriousLeader"

Theywereassembled,saidMr.Dillon,tohonourthememoryofagreat Irishman-toplaceonrecordthegratitudewhichtheyfelttobeduefora lifeofsplendidservicetotheIrish people.Sixyearshadpassedsince theylaidJohnRedmondtorestinthe gravetheyallsalutedthatday-six tragicyearsduringwhichIrelandhad passedthroughsomeoftheblackest experiencesinallherhistory;and thousandsofpeoplewhoin1918were inclinedtofindfaultwithMr.Redmond'spolicywerenowaskingthemselveswhathadbeengainedbyallthe bloodshed,ruin,anddemoralisationof thoseyears.

To-dayIrelandwaspartitioned.The NationalistsoftheSixCountieswere handedover-tothetendermerciesof anOrangeParliament,and,whatwas fromsomepointsofviewevenworse, "Southern"Irelandwasmorebitterly dividedthaniteverhadbeeninhis memory.

TheBoundary,

Forthelasttwoyearstheyhad beentoldthatpartitionwouldberemediedbyaBoundaryCommission. ThereoughttobenoboundaryinIreland;andtwoyearsaftertheTreaty wassignedrecognisingthepermanent partitionofIreland,topropose.byway ofremedy,todeliberatelysetupa Commissiontodrawapermanent boundary,towhichtheGovernmentof theFreeStatewouldbeaparty,would beafreshendorsementoftheprincipleofpartition,andanofficialdeclarationtothewholeworldthatthe GovernmentoftheIrishFreeState solemnlyrecognisedthatIrelandwas notonecountry,andthatinitwere twoseparatenations.

ThemomenttheBoundaryCommissiongaveitsdecisionthatdecision wouldheregisteredintheLeagueof Nationscssoneoftheboundarieswhich itwouldbethedutyoftheLeagueto defend.

Inhisjudgmentthefirsttaskbefore thecountrywastounitetheSouth, andhavingachievedunionin"South. ern"IrelandtopursuethegreaterobjectofaunionofallIrelandbysuch meansastheTreatyleftopen.

Butcivilisationhadprogressed,and to-day,ifamandifferedfromanother inpoliticsthecorrectthingwasto "crease"him,executeLim.orhandhis nametooneofthemurdergangswho weresoactiveinthecountryup,to quiterecently;or,ifonedidnotcare tobequitesoemphatic,burndown hishouseorclaphimintogaol,and holdhimtherewithouttrial.

Hewassufficientlyold-fashionedand uncivilisedtoprefertheoldmethods, badastheywere.

Continuing.Mr.DillonsaidMr.RedmondhadledthePartywithconsummateParliamentaryskill,provinghimselftobetheequal,and,indeed,he thought,thesuperiorofthebeststatesmanGreatBritaincouldproduce. "VictorytoVictory."

Itwasadmittedthatthroughout 1:.ose18yearsallthemeananddirty criticismofMr.Redmondcamefrom hisowncountrymen,notanewexperienceforIrishleaders.Facedthen withtheenormousandquiteexceptionaldifficulties,heledhisPartyin theteethofenormousdifficultiesfrom victorytovictoryuptotheculminatingtriumphofthedestructionofthe vetooftheHouseofLords,andthe passingoftheActof1914intolawanActwhich,hehadalwaysmaintained,offeredIrelandabettersettlement thanthatwonbytheTreatyatsuch aterrificcost. WhenMr.Redmondwaselected leaderin1900,IrelandwasstillovertaxedandpaidatributetoGreatBritain.WhentheActof1914waspassedIrelandwasgettingbackmorethan shepaidintaxes.andGreatBritain forthenuttime.ssincetheUnionwas payingoveramillionayearintribute toIreland.

How.then,couldanymansaythat theleadershipofMr.Redmondwasa failure?

"Trueitisthat,"saidMr.Dillon, "afterMr.Redmond'sdeathalargesectionofhiscountrymen,undertheguidanceofnewleaders,repudiatedhispoiicyandrejectedthesettlementhehad wonforthem.

"Nothingwouldsatisfythembuta free,independentRepublicandtotal separationfromtheBritishEmpire. Thecountryisslowlycomingtorea lisewhatthisnewdeparturehasled to.Itcertainlyhasnotledtoafree Republicortotalseparation--nor,as farasIcansee,isitlikelytodoso."

Mr.Redmondusedtobeattacked asbeingtoomuchofanImperialist. butsofarashecouldsee,continued Mr.Dillon,hisImperialismwasfaint comparedwiththeImperialismofthe menwhowereatpresentincontrol.

In1914Mr.Redmondandheveers denouncedbythelateMr.Griffith,n hispaperastraitorsandworthyofa traitor'sfateiftheyconsentedtothe alienationofasingleacreofthesacredsoilofIrelandfornomatterhow shirtaperiod.

TherealtruthisthatitwaspreciselybecauseLloydGeorgeknewthatso longastheIrishPartyweteinthe HouseofCommons,hecouldnever carry"hispartitionscheme,thathedecidedtobreakfaithwithMr.Redmond andtheParty,andtoplayintothe handsoftheRevolutionaryRepublican PartyinIreland,feelingconfidentthat oncehegotridoftheIrishPart)he coulddealwiththeRepublicansas easilyastheGovernmentofthatday dealtwiththeFenianInsurrectionof '67.Mr.LloydGeorgeusedtheSinn FeinPartytodrivetheIrishParty outofhisroadintheHouseofCommons,justashehadsinceusedthe TreatymentocrushtheRepublicans.

"SomeFoolishPeople."

SomefoolishpeoplethoughtthatbecausetheActof1914hadbeenrepealed,Mr.Redmond'slife-workwasafailtire.ButwithoutthatActthere wouldhavebeennoTruce,andno Treaty,but'onlyarepetitionona farbloodierscaleoftheresultsofall previousIrishrebellions.

Itwasfalsethentosaythatthe life-workofJohnRedmondwasafailure,andheventuredtophnhesyfrom thatplatformthatinthehappierdays whichhetrustedwereinstorefor'Ireland,longafterthenamesofhis criticsandbelittlershadbeenforgotten,JohnRedmondwouldberemelts beredandhonouredasoneofthemost illustriousofthemenwhohadledthe Irishracethroughthedesertoftheir wanderings,andasthemanwholed themtothesatesofthePromised Land.

DIEHARDSLANDERWITHDRAWN.

TotheHouseofLordsrecently, LordFitzalandrewattentiontoa statementmadebyanIrishToryPeer, LordMuskerry,whichimputedsedition,misconductofSirAlfredCope-

Thestatementpracticallyallegedthat SirAlfredCopeduringtherecenttroubledtimesinIreland,andwhilehe wasanofficialoftheBritishGovernmentthere,attendedprivatemeetings oftheBritishforcesofofficialsand thendisclosedtheinformationhe gatheredatsuchmeetingstotheheads oftheSinnFeinmovement,with,sultsthatproveddisastroustothe Britishforces:LordFitzalanconsideredthatsuchstatementsshouldbe sustainedbyproof,andfailingsuch proofthatLordMuskerryshouldmake hisstatementsoutsideParliamentso thattheiraccuracycouldbetestedin court.LordMuskerrywasdisinclinedtowithdrawthestatements,and herefusedtomakethemoutsideof Parliament,whereuponLordMus-a Parliament,whereuponLordCurzon, theToryleaderintheHouseofLords, saidthatunlessLordMuskerrywould withdrawhisstatementsorrepeat themoutsideoftheHouse,LordCurzonwouldconsiderithisdutytohave therulesoftheHouserevisedsothat suchstatementsshouldnotremain coveredbyParliamentaryprivilege. ThereuponLordMuskerrywithdrew thestatementsimmediately.SirAlfredCope,itmaybeadded,wasan Englishcivilservant,whowasfished outbyMr.LloydGeorgeasaperson likelytoprovepfmischservicea,a sortofliaisonofficerbetweentheEnglishGovernmentandpopularorganisationsinIrelandpriortotheTreaty. Thechoicewaswidelyacclaimedasan excellentone,itbeinggenerallyreeng. nisedthatSirAlfredCopedischarged hisdutieswithconsummatetactand success.Butheincurred(therefore) theundyingandunscrupuloushat,of theToryDiehards.

"Youcannothope,"sailMr.Dillon, "tore-unitethepeopleoftheFree Statebyexecutions,orbyimprisonmentofpoliticalopponentswithout trial.orbytheexclusionofalarge sectionofthenation'srepresentatives fromtheNationalParliament.

"Andsomeplanwillhavetobedevisedforendingthisstateofthings andunitingthepeopleoftheFree Statebeforeanyeffectivesteps hetakentowardsthewiderunion."

MrRedmondasLeader

Ithadbeensaid,hecontinued,and latelyrepeated,thatMr.Redmond's leadershipwasafailure.Hedenied it,andassertedthatsincetheUnion waspassedin1800,therehadbeenno leadershipsosuccessfulorsofruitful inbenefitsfortheIrishpeopleasthe leadershipoffohnRedmond.

WhenMr.Redmondwaselected leaderoftheIrishPartyin1900he hadamoredifficultpositiontoface thananyofhispredecessor.The Partyandthecountryhadbeenbitterlydividedandtornbyfactionfor tenyears.Inthosedayswhenthey hadtoreasonoutacasetheyresorted tosticksandstones.

Therewereagoodmanycasualties, butnoliveswerelost.Theywere comparativelyprimitiveanduncivilised-they.sotospeak,livedinthe "StoneAge."

Andin1918whenhefromapubli.c platformchallengedMr.duValerato statehowheproposedtodealwith theUlsterQuestion,hers,pliedonthe followingSunday:

"Hehadnodifficultyinanswering Mr.Dillon'schallen.te.Thequest'an wasquitesimple.Hewaullgivethe ProtestantsofUlstersixmonthsto comeintotheRepuhlia,andifthey didnotcomeinwithinsixmonthskick themoutofthecountry.' inthematteroftheUlsterQuests, andPartition,Mr.Redmondhadbeen persistentlyandgrosslymisrepresented andslandered.Mr.Redmondnever agreedtotheprincipleofpartition. Itwasnowawell-knownfactthat ifMr.Redmondandhehadagreedto giveupTyrone,Fermanagh.andDerry City,attheBuckinghamPalaceconference,theycouldthereandthen,;n June,1914,havesettledthequestion withthegoodwillofUlster,butthey refused.

Andagain,inthe'negotiationsof .july,1916,thoughtheirhandshadbeen greatlyweakenedbytheInsurreetion ofEasterWeek,andbytheformation oftheCoalition,theyabsolutelyrefusedtoconsenttotheexclusionofthe SixCountiesunlessitwasclearlyset forththatsuchanarrangementshould terminateoneyearaftertheendof thewar.Anditwasonthatcondi-

Ofallthosewhocanquotethe wuros"GodtorEnglandandSt. George,"howmanyhaveaskedthemselvesthequestion:What,ifanything, doesSt.GeorgemeantoEnglandnow?

ThepatronsaintofEnglandshould surelyhavesomeconsiderableplacein thethoughtsofEnglishpeople.How manyofthemevergivehimathought? Indeed,donotweofthehouseholdof thefaithsnakefartoolittleofhis feastandpatronage?

ItwasatrueinstinctthatledRuskintonamehismostsincerecrusade fortheregenerationofEnglandthe wildofSt.George.HadRuskinbecomeaCatholicandhadhisvaliant effortbeenfoundedontheFaith,it mightindeed,havebeenalastinggood. Foundedonthewillofaveryearnest butfallibleandsometimeserraticindividual.itcouldnotendure.

AResultoftheReformation.

TheReformationrooteddeeplyin Englandthecurseofmake-believeand self-deception.TotheordinarynonCatholicEnglishman,womanorchild, St.Georgereallymeansnothing.Some vagueassociationwithaknighthood thatitselfhaslostallknightlymeaningandmaydecoratethesuccessful profiteer,vaguenumismaticorheraldic memories,alineortwoofShakespeare'simperfectlyremembered,and thatisall,orIammuchmistaken. Indeed.havingacceptedtheReformation,whathadEnglandtodowith saints,letalonepatronsaints?The reductioadabsurdumwaswellexpressedbythosewhomadeanuninspiringandforeignmonarch"headof, thesteeple"ofSt.George's.Hanover SquareWiththatuncannylackof humourthatdistinguishestheirkind, theframersoftheActof3and4EdwardVI.,c.10,exemptedfromdestructionordefacing"anyimageorpicture setorgravenuponanytombinany church.chapel,orchurchyard,onlyfor amonumentofanyking,prince,noblemanorotherdeadpersonwhichhath notbeencommonlyreputedortaken forasaint."OnthisthelateDr. Gairdneraptlycommented"theentire absenceofsaintlinessinadeceasedpersonmightbepleadedasareasonfor hisimagebeingpreservedinchurch! Soancestraltombsofancientbarons andgentryremainedunviolated." ("LollardyandtheReformations'vol. 3.p184.1 HenryVIIIandtheImages. Thearch-hypocritewholetloosethe hostsofhelluponCatholicEngland, Hears'VIII.,didnotspareherpatron saint.Indeed,acarefulstudyof Gairdner's"LollardyandtheReformation"doesnotlendmuchsupportto thecommonlyacceptedtheorythat Henrywasanearnestupholderof everyotherCatholicdoctrinebut PapalSupremacy.Onsentencing Lamberttothestakefordenying Transubstantiation.hecriedostentatiouslythathewouldbenopatronof heretics,butsecretlyhehadbeenpatronisingthemforyears.andover andaboveallthat,heknewverywell "whowasthegreatesthereticin Kent."Withperfectimpunity,and withthetyrant'sprivity.Cranmer hadbeenallowedtoviolatethatvery ActoftheSixArticles,designed,indeed.tovindicateHenry'sorthodoxy toEnrcipe,butprompted.asDr. Gairdnershows,bypoliticalexpediencyandnotzealforreligion.Let usseethedevotiontoSt.Georgepaid bythe"orthodox"Henrythroughthe agencyofhishirelingprimate. "Inthisyear.1541 theparsonof St.George'sinCanterbury,whose namewasJohnTofer,atoncewrote fromLondontohiscurate,JohnParis, andhischurchwardens,Mr.Randand Mr.Bartilmewe.totakedowntheimageofSt.George,asdirectedbyMr. Commissary.Ifitwerenotdonebeforehiscominghome,hesaid.he woulddoithimself:andheandthe churchwardensactuallydidtakeit downaccordingly.Butthatwasnot enough:foronFridayfollowingCranmer'sCommissarycameandinquired whethertheyhadalsocutitinpieces. 'No.'wasthereply.Thensaidthe rimmissary.'itisnotonly-theKing's Majesty'spleasuretohavesuchimagestobepiilleddown.butalsotobe disfigured.andnothingofsuchimages toremain,withthetabernacle.'Rand pleadedthatsurelyitwasnotthe Kine'spleasuretopulldownsuch'pictures'(imageswereoftencalleipictures)whentherewasnocommon offeringattheshrine,especiallya'pic-

Themoreweconsidersnethemeof St.Georgethemorevividlyweshall perceivethehollowfalsehoodof"the greatElizabethantradition"thathas oustedhistoricalrealitythisweary longtimeeversincethecoarsecirago spentherlongreignintramplingout theFaith.Foralmosttheonlything wecanaffirmwithcertaintyofSt. Georgeisthathewasamartyrforthe CatholicFaith.WouldtoGodthat themen,women,andchildrenofEnglandmightlearntohehonestin thou*andword!"Plainbluff, downrightJohnBull,"wearetold, "westandnohumbug.Hesayswhat hemeansandmeanswhathesays." Onthecontrary,helivesonhumbug, heisanadeptathumbugginghimself. HesayseverySundaythathebelieves intheHolyCatholicChurch,buthe meanshisownparticularcomfortable Establishment,whichasksnoques- tionsandletswellalone.Irepeat, self-deceptionandmake-believearethe curseofEngland:stricthonestyof thoughtandutterancemightprepare thewayforherconversion.

Anyonewhowilltakethetrauble toreadauthenticmemoirsandsober historiesofthelateyearsofhorrorwill realiseinwhatanatmosphereoffalsehoodthebelligerentnationslivedfor years,andwhatacursethesensational hate-mongeringPresshasbeen. Lies.

Honestyofthoughtandutterance, ofthisatleastthecomingfeastofSt Georgeshouldremindourcountry.Theverycoinoftherealmhaslied brazenlyforcenturies.withits"Fidei Defensor."Elizabethwas-well,I thinkitwasJohnWesleyhimselfwho, movedbythedeathofMaryofScotland,calledthe"brightoccidentall starre""asjustandmercifulasNero, asgoodaChristianasMahomet," whileherlyingcoincalledher"DefenderoftheFaith."PoetswhorailedagainsttheCatholicChurch,and weresoterriblyafraidofidolatryin honouringthesaints,didnotscruple toaddressthewretchedwomanasa goddess.WitnessSpenser:

"Butvainitistothinkbyparagon

Ofearthlythingstojudgeofthings divine: Herpower,hermercy,andherwisdom, none Candeem,butwhotheGodheadcan define."

ToreturntoSt.George,wereadin the"CatholicEncyclopaedia"(vol.6, p.4531:"GEORGE,SAINT,martyr, patronofEngland,sufferedatornear Lydda,alsoknownasDiospolis,in Palestine,probablybeforethetimeof Constantine.Accordingtothevery carefulinvestigationofthewholequestionrecentlyinstitutedbyFatherDelehaye,theBollandiit,inthelightof modernsourcesofinformation,the abovestatementsumsupallthatcan safelybeaffirmedaboutSt.George, despitehisearlycultusandpre-eminentrenownbothinEastandWest." AcableoftheweekinformsusthatthenewCommonwealthLoanfor teamillionshasbeenfullysubscribed.Weremembertherewasmuch talkwhentheFederalelectionswereinfullblastthateconomywouldbethe orderofthenewParliament.Thebattlecrywas"Economy."Therewas amurmuringagainsttheextravaganceofdepartments,andthepolitical sailsweretrimmedtomeettheoccasion.Likeallelectioncries,itwas merelypoliticalbirdlime.ThefrequencyofappealsfuraloanfromimpecuniousTreasurersisabadsignthatallisnottooserenewithourpoliticaladministration."Economy"hasapparentlybeenthrowntothe"demnitionbow-wows"bythecompositeGovernment.Thetaxpayerhasnogreat reasontoskyhiscaubeenoverthewonderfulsuccessofthislastloanofthe FederalGovernment.Theinterestaccountonourborrowingsisassuming largeproportions,andtheoutlookforareductionoftaxationisnotatall encouraging.

TheannualDiocesanCongressofParisdevoteditsworkthisyeartothe studyofvariousquestionsconcerning legislation,education,ethics,etc.TwoprominentmembersofParliamentwereamongthe speakers:M.Isaac,formerMinisterofCommerce,andDr.Thibout.whois knownasanauthorityon,questionspertainingtofamilylife.Bothspeakers declaredlegislationcouldnotencouragelargefamiliesifreligiondidnotinfluencethemasses.AnimportantstatementwasmadebyM.Isaac.The formerMinisterhasbeencollectingstatisticsontheancettryofdelinquent childrenwhocomebeforethechildren'scourtsinFrance.Accordingto thesestatisticsitappearsthatabouttwo-thirdsofthechildrenandyoung boysbroughttocourtarethechildrenofparentswhohavebeendivorced orseparated.Asthenumberofdivorcesancrseparationsisrelativelysmall comparedwiththeptunberofunitedfamilies,theconclusionisthatcriminalityisveryhighamongchildrenofseparatedfamiliesascomparedwith thatofchildrenofnormalfamilies.

WereadthatthePresbyterianAssemblyatGrandRapids,intheState ofMichigan,America,recentlycarriedaresolution"outlawingwar."Itis averygoodresolutionasresolutionsgo.It'sonlyshortcomingisthatit willnotappealtothewholeworldatlarge-thatitsinfluencewillstretchno furtherthanthatbodyofpacificismwhichisprayinghardforpeace,yet doubtingthatthebirdwiththeolivebranchwillcome.Concurrentlywith theresolutioncomestheannouncementthattheAmericanPresidenthas signedtheImmigrationBill,providingfortheexclusionofJapanese.In theLandoftheChrysanthemumCoolidgehasprovokedagreathub-bub, andJapanesepridehasbeentouchedsoprofoundlythatthereislikely tobeawidespreadreactionagainstEuropeanswithinJapan."Wemust," saidaJapanesegeneral,"bepreparedtoundergowhateverhardshipsare necessarytoavengetheinsult."Whenmilitarymenstartoffthemark withsuchtalk,theygenerallystrikebother,anditisnotimprobablethat UncleSam'snewImmigrationBillmaymeanabigrowinthePacific.However,thatrowdoesnotpromisetosparklejustyetawhile.Japanhasfar tomuchworrywithinherowngatestowanttogoforthlookingforsea troubles.

AWheezeandaFact

"Romeneverchanges."isaglibphraseinthemouthsofopponentsof theCatholicChurch.Itisfrequentlyheardinthecontroversythathas beenstirredupbythepromotersofthe"Catholic"movementwithintheAnglicancommunion.ThechargeflungoutwithmuchpresumptionandpretenceonthepartoftheChurch'sopponentsagainsthersteadfastadherencetoherDivineCommissionisundoubtedlycorrect,theonlyonethat hasthestampoftruthuponitamongstthemanyvaried,hateful,uncharitableandunmeritedonesthatcomefromthemouthsandpensofheradversaries.TheCatholicChurchbowsherheadgraoefully,andadmitsthe

charge-shehasremainedfaithf4eothetrustconfidedtoherinthebeginningoftheChristianerabyherDivineFounder,Hadshewe4lysurrenderedtothereformersinthe16thCenturyandbecamethepuppetofkings andvoliticalschemers,herplaceinhistorydeoulslbeaspitiableastheremnantofthatgreatByzantineChurchwhichwasoncethegloryofthe Orient,butwhichto-dayisasacapturedslavedraggedattheheelsof everyGovernmenttowhichitrendersserviceandabsoluteobedience.

HadRomechangedwhentheGermanLutherandhiscompanionsin heresythunderedagainstneeinthe;rviciouswaragainstPapalauthority,it ismorethanprobable,whenonereflectsuponthecharacteroftheadversariesoftheChurchinthoseclaysandthelicenseandmaterialismwhich impregnatedtheGrc,aApostacythatEuropeancivilisationwouldhave beensmashedtodeathupontheruinsofthePapacjeRomepreserved LatinChristianityfromthatterribleblightwhichellupontheEasten Churchafteritsfinalbreakwithher-RomesavedEuropeancivilisationby resistingthemachinationsofthereformersandbyrefusingtobecomethe creatureofTemporalPower.

"Romeneverchanges,"saidapoliticiantheotherdayinEngland,when theimperativewordwasspokenbythePopeattheconclusionoftheMal. inesconservations.Itwastheanswergivenbyhispredecessor,Leo.. toHalifaxandtheAnglicanBishop§yearsago,andshouldtheconversationsbeagainrepeatedbysomeearneststriversforunitywithRome inthedaysahead,therecanbebutasimilaranswer.

WedonotbelittletheforwardmovementwithinProtestantismfora returntoChristianunity.Onthecontrary,weapplaudit.Itisevidence thattheleadersoftheProtestantChurch.dividedsomuchagainstitself, seesitsultimatedefeatasaspiritualforceintheworldunlesstheycan disciplineitsadherentsagainstthecorruptionsofmodernismandthelicence ofthatwaveofworldlinesswhichthreatensitontheflanksandintherear. HowitcanfurtherattempttomaintainitsclaimtohaveDivineguidance, andyetpermititsministers,andevenbishops,todenythecardinalbeliefs ofChristianity.isbecomingamatterofgraveconcerntoitsbestminds.Ite' firstgreatneedistouniteitself.Thenperhapsitmightbetterunderstand theefficacyofPapalInfallibility.

"ThouartPeter"hasremainedastupendousandimpregnablebarrier againsttheattacksofthereformersandtheirsuccessorstosubvertthe ChurchoftheApostles."Amen,Iamwithyoualldays,"cannotbetalk edawaybyanymoderninterpreterofHolyWritwithoutdebasingandear ruptingthetext.WhenthenthecomplaintismadebyleadersofPro testantism,suchastheEnglishBishopGore,thatorganisedChristianity hasfailed,thereisadoubtexpressedthatChristhasfailedtokeepHispro mise.BishopGorefailstounderstandtheCatholicideaoftheChurchas organisedbyChrist.ThismatterwasputbeforehisLordshipveryplainly byanEnglishCatholicpriestveryrecently."Individualmembersofthe Church,"hewrote,"mayfail,andnodoubthavefailed,torespondtothe fullmessageoftheChurch:buttheChurchasanorganisation,asaDivine Society,setupbyChristtoteachmen,andguidedalldaysbytheHoly Spirit,canneverfail,eitherinherdogmaticormoralmessage.Shecannot whittleitawaynoralterit,norfailtodeliveritdowntheages.Ifshehas cloneso.thenthepromiseofChristhasfailed,andthereisnosuchorgan; .ationastheChurchfoundedbyChrist;wearethrownbackontomere humanorganisationsandmerehumaninterpretationsoftheGospel;'n aword,intothatwelterofcontradictionswhichgoesbythenameof'our common andisonlymodernismthinlyveiled."

ItisquitecorrectthatRomeneverchanges,thatsheisanuncompromisingadherentofthefirstprincipleslaiddownintheCommissiongivento Peter-asturdychampionofTruth,andanunchangeableConservativein thosethingsthatmatterinFaithandMorals.

"Alwaysthesame-semperidem"-thechargestands.ToittheCatholic Church-Rome-bendsherroyalheadandmodestlyadmitstheimpeachment. Itisherglory.

HolyFatheronCatholicAction

SpeakingtomembersoftheRomanDiocesanassemblyrecently,the HolyFathergaveaninspiringdiscourse,inwhichheanalysedanddefined whatmaybetakenasamatterofgreatpracticalmomentbyourCatholic societieseverywhere.TheHolyFatherasks:

"WhatisCatholicaction?Actionassuchcompriseseverymovement oflife,of-.livingandacting.Butthespecification,thesignification,thesecretisintheotherword:Catholic.

"WhatdoesthewordCatholicmean?Inanetymologicalsenseitsig nifiesuniversal,inthesensethatyouare,youdesiretobeintheChurch.

"WhatisCatholicaction?Toanswerthisquestiononemustneedsrefer toallthatiscontainedinthetermCatholicism.Catholicismisthefulness, theperfectionofChristianitywithJesusWhohaswishedit,withtheChurch which,assistedbyHim,propagatesandfomentsit.

TheModernists

Theprideofknowledgeisthatinfatuationofamindintoxicatedwith itself,whichseesitselfinwhatitknows,likeNarcissusinthelake,and which,consideringeverylimitasaninsulttoitscapacity,presumesto treatwithGod,asbetweenequalandequal.Suchamannolonger studiesfromaloveoftruth,hutagainstit.Herejoicesinpilingclouds aroundit,infindingagrainofsandwhichmaybemadeablasphemy, andwhichhemayhurlagainstheaven.Doeshewatchthefirmament, itisbuttodrawforthfromitthesecretoftheeternityoftheworld. Doeshedescendintothebowelsoftheearth,itisbuttoseekforarm; againstagreatBiblicalfact.Doesheinterrogatethenecropolisof EgyptortheruinsofBabylon,itishuttoendeavourtofindtherea voicethatdeniessomethingofthemostancienttraditions.HisknowledgeonlyputshimintoastubbornduelbetweenhimselfandGod.Lacordaire.

MissMerleRobertson,thedistinguishedDanish-Australianpianiste, gavearecitaltotheNunsofthemetropolitanareaattheLoretoConvent onWednesdayafternoonoflastweek. Theprogrammewasanextensiveone, comprisingthegreatnamesofthe pianoandmanyitemsaskedbythe Sisters.MissRobertson'sowncompositionswerewarmlyreceived,and admiredfortheirstandardofexcellence.Theimpersonationsoffamous pianistesweredelightfulandhumorous.Atthecloseoftherecital.the Rev.FatherMcMahon,onbehalfof theSisters,thankedthegiftedpianiste forthehonourshehadpaidthemthat afternoon.Greatartistsviistingthis countryhadthoughtoftheSistersand gavethemrecitalssuchasthis.To MissRobertson,however,theirappreciationandgratitudewasmoresincere,becauseshewa,sagreatartistand anAustralianhornone.IfMissRobertsonhadaRussianname,something thatrequiresasneezetopronounceit properly,herreceptioninPerthand elsewhereinAustraliawouldbemore enthusiasticthanithasbeen.Her brillianttechniqueandartisticinterpretationhavewellmeritedthetitleof "thelionnessofthekeyboard."In reply.MissRobertsonsaid.thatitwas alwaysapleasuretoplayfortheSisters,becauseshefeltthattheywere averyappreciativeaudience,andshe alwaysavailedoftheopportunityof bringingsomepleasureintheirlives, withwhichtherewassolittlesym pathyintheworldoutside.

OnMondaylast,Dr.Riley,Anglican Archbishop,celebratedhis70th.birthday.Alargebirthdayparty,comprisinghispersonalfriendswasheldinthe TownHall.HisGracewaspresented withachequefor£1,000.Itwasa gatheringrepresentativeofallcreeds andclasses,andexpressionsofgood feelingcamefromallthereligious bodies.SpeakingastherepresentativeofhisGraceArchbishopClune. OnSaturdaynext,June7th,the DominicanSisters,intheDioceseof Geraldton,willcelebratetheSilver TubileeoftheirfoundationinWestern

Australia.TheOrderwasintroduced in1899fromDunedin,NewZealand, 'luringthefirstyear'sreignofthelate BishopKelly,whobecamethefirstBishopofthenewSeeofGeraldtonin 1398.ThefirsthouseoftheOrderwas establishedinCue,andtwoyearslater, in1901,thePriorywasestablishedat Dongarra. Formanyyearsaladies'retreatkas beenconductedthere,andtheConventisoneofthemostbeautifulbuildingsinthatpicturesqueseasidecentre. OtherhousesoftheOrderareatLeonora,Meekatharra,ThreeSprings,and Yalgoo.Oftheoriginalpioneerband who-cametotheGoldenWestunder theleadershipofthelateMother44. Gabriel,onlythepresentPrioress, MotherM.Demenica,andthesubPrioress,MotherM.Bonaventure,remain.Duringthepastquarterofa centurtftheDominicanNunshaveoccupiedaforemostplaceintherankof religiouseducators,andthenamesof theirsuccessfulpupilsinthevarious publicexaminationsarelegion.We joinwiththeirmanyfriendsinwishing theSisterseveryblessingontheirJubileeDay.

Wecanrindtheanswerstothese questionsonlybyquestioningChrist Himself.WhatdoesHesayinthe Scriptures?
