TheLDroner,inhisaddresstothe jury,saidthedeceasedwasthevictimofanatrociouscrime.Therewas nofeatureorcircumstancethatcould showanyexcuseorextenuationor justificationforthecommissionofsuch adiabolicaloutrage.
Theparties,orsomeofthem,must havehadknowledgeofthetimeat whichthelaunchwouldarriveat Cobh.Itwasnineyearsagosince hehadpresidedattheinquistonthe victimsoftheLusitania.Herecollectedthefeelingsofhorrorandconsternationofthepeopleatthatcatastrophe.It,however,causednothing likethehorroranddetestationthat hadbeencreatedbytheterribleaffair theywerenowinvestigating.

Editor'sNoteBook WenoticeinouradvertisingcolumnsthattheAnnualCatholic13all isdrawingnear.Thissocialinstitutioniscomparativelynewinourmidst. Still,judgingfromthepatronageaccordeditinformeryears,wehaveno hesitationinsayingthatitisthemostpopularsocialeventintheyear ofCatholiclife.ItisalaudablethingforCatholicstodisplaynotonly theirsolidarityinthereligiousarena,butalsointhesocialworld.We arenotbeingsapart,andhenceourdevelopingofoursocialsense.From whatcanbegathered,thisyearwillheatotaleclipseofpastfunctions- thatisthecommittee'sobjective,andthat,wetrust,willbetheresult.It isourdutytostandbythissocialdisplayjustasmuchaswedoindemonstratingourstrengthinotherspheres.
PerhapstherewillbesomepeaceinChinanowthatSunVathen's stormycareerhasclosed.Hehadaremarkablepersonality,andarestless soul,anditcanbesaidofhimthathesacrificedmuchtorelievehisnative landfromthegripofanoppressiveandout-of-dateMonarchy.Hewasthe firstofhiscountrymentogivetheemancipationmovementadefiniteshape. ButtheCelestialmindhasyettoemancipateitselffromthethraldomand hypocrisyofChinesetraditions.SunVatSenpursuedhisidealdoggedly andconsistently.Buthewas,likemostgreatreformers,notdestinedtosee itsrealisation.Anothertime,andinanotherday.somefutureChinaman withhiscourage,andmaybehissel'-sacrificeandselflessness,willfinishhis work.Hewasatleasthonest.
RamsayMacDonald'slatestassurance,givenintheAlbertHall,London.toademonstrationofLabourWomen,thathewasaconvincedandunbendingNationalist,andrespectednationaltraditionsandcharacteristics, shouldsteadythenervesofthosepoliteladieswhokisspoodlesandpekinese,andeschewbabiesandperambulators,andwhowentroundcanvassing theelectorsforvotestodefeathimasacut-throatBolshevik.Heisprepared toletthemrushintheirownwaytothecemetery,andsolong.astheybehavethemselvesanddon'tlettheirpoodlesandpeidnesebiteanyone,severelytothemselves,knowingfullwellthattheirracemustsoonexhaustitself.
AnotherPoliticalSurprise TheissueoftheGeneralElectionsinFranceculminatesintheresigna- tionofM.Poincare,whohad,inhisdirectionofFrenchaffairs,practically assumedtheattitudeofadictator.Hewasundoubtedlyastrongcontrolling figurein.Frenchpolitics,whatheisdestinedtoremainthefuturealonecan unfold.AtpresentpublicopinionoutsideParisisverymuchunsettled.It hasbeensaidthatPariscarriedtoobigahead,thatFrenchpublicopinion wascentralised,andthatParisdictatedtheGovernment'spolicy.Thegen- eralelectionshasupsetthisopinion,ifithad,atanytimeinrecentmonths, ageneralacceptance.Theresultsarenotreassuring,andM.Poincareand hiscolleaguesresignonthe1st.ofnextmonth.Whatremainstobedone forthecontinuance-ofthosenegotiationswiththeMacDonaldGovernmentontheRuhrquestionisonlyamatterjustnowfornebulousconjec- ture.Thecrystalofpoliticalnecromancyshowsmerelyopalineflickers. Onemaygazeinto'theintenselyinterestingprism,butonlytodrawaway- withblinkingeyesandtheconfession"Ican'tseeanything."Theop- ponentsoftheexhaustedPoincareGovernmentpretendtobepleasedwith theresults.Thehopeisstronginindustrialcentresthatthehighcostoflivingwillbereduced-thattaxationwillbelessened,andpublicexpenditure reduced.ButwiththedeefatoftheGovernmentthevalueofthefranc hasfallen.AgreatcontributingfactortotheriseinpriceswastheinvestmentoftheRuhrandthestubbornresistanceofGermanlabourtobecomethemuletocarrytheburdenofreparations.Vestedinterestsin Germany,andvestedinterestsinFranceandelsewhere,areprettymuchof thesamekidney,andareresponsiblefor.thetransitionsinGovernments everywherewherethepeopleenjoytheprivilegeofafreefranchise.Con- servatisminFranceisjustmerelyexperiencingthatjudgmentofPublic OpinionwhichsenttheCoalitionGovernmentofBritainintothewildernessandwhichinthiscountryhasmanifesteditselfinrecentStateelections PSemphaticallyasinFranceandEngland.Thetruthisthebulkofpub- licsentimentinallcountrieswheredemocraticinstitutionsarehasitssource inthecottagesoftheworkers,andnotincommercialandfinancialhouses. Politiciansasarulefailtograspthatfact,andGovernmentsrelyupontheir defenceforcestocarryouttheirmandates.Thereisnogreatsympathy onthesideofauthoritywiththisvolumeofpublicsentiment.Itonly getsahearingwhenitisautomaticallyorganisedbyachinggrievancesthat becomearticulateattheballotboxThecommonpeopleoftheFrenchnationarelikethecommonpeopleofallnationsexperiencingtheaftermathof
thgirpredecessorsafterthefallofParisandthehumiliationoftheirna tionalpride.Thecostofwarhastobemetbythedefeatedinvariably,bat defeatedGermanyuptothepresentstubbornlydodgespayment.Mostly, perhaps,becausetheGermanGovernmentisstilllargelyatthemercyof financialinterests,who,protectingtheirbankbalances,endeavourtoshits whatshoi,ldbetheirburdensontotheshouldersoftheGermanworker. TheundoubtedunrestprevalentinEuropeto-dayisattributabletothe wretchedselfishnessofGovernmentsthatleantoogenerouslytothe-big financialinterestswhichkeep.andsustainthem,andforgetordisregard thosegrievancesinthehomesofthecommonpeoplewhichareconspirators againstthepublicpeace.ThedefeatofM.Poincarehasbeenbrought aboutbyarevoltagainstthosedomesticburdensthataremakingthe homesoftheFrenchpeasantry,andthecottagesoftheFrenchindustria:ist,placeswherewantandmiseryarebeginningtoshowtheirhaggard faces. Aclimaxhasbeenreachedandasettlement-gofthereparations questionseemstoberemote.Mr.RamsayMacDonaldmaynotnowworn overther'eniiforalunchwithM.PoincareatChequers.
AWordinSeason "ItoldaninfluentialLondongathering,'saidMr.A.G.Jones,Minister forMinesinQueensland,recently,"thatAustraliawasdestinedtomanufa.. tureitsownrawmaterials,andthatshedeclinedtocontinuebeingawood andwaterjoeyforothercountries."Wefancywecanhearthegrowing generationofAustraliashoutingfromalltheStatesoftheCommonwealth. "That'sthestufftogive'em."IftheAustralianonlyknewthevalue hiscountry'splaceintheEmpire,andhadmorenationalprideinhishear' hewouldnotwanttobeawoodandwaterjoevforothercountries,ever. withintheDominions.Whenhewillshakeoffhismentallazinessartsi ceasetrustingtheadministrationofhisaffairstotheotherchap,whodoe, notcareacontinentalabouthisfuturedestiny,andisonlyconcernedir aggrandisinghimselfandtheinterestsherepresents,therewillheadi-placementintheconditionoftheAustralianasawoodandwaterjoeyfor others.Butuntilhedoesthinkforhimselfanddoesbecomeactivelyillterestedinthecommercialandnationalaffairsofhiscountry,forwhichhsfoughtsowellintheGreatWar,todeliverfromtheallegedaggressihn aforeignpower,hemustcontinue,andwillinevitablyremaina"woodand waterjoey."Hewouldn'tlikeanyonetoswankuptohimandtellhim thathewasasortoffactotumforothernationalities,hewouldprobably smitetheanyoneonbothcheeksanddisfigurehiseyes,buttheplainfact istherenevertheless,muchthoughhewouldresenttheimpeachmeift.Let Australiansbegintounderstandthemselves,andceasegullingthemselves withthesi:kly,slobberingsentimentalboshpouredoutonthem-sofrequentlybyprofessionalflatterersatbanquetsandcivicreceptions,political andcommercialleg-pullerswhoallthewhileareaimingatkeepingthem "woodandwaterjoeys,"andtheircountryahappyhuntinggroundforthe outsider:whentheydo,nothingonearthorunderitshouldbeabletoset alimittothemarchoftheircountryamongthenations.
SanctifytheHome Thecivilisedworldhasbeencarefulandtroubledaboutmanythings forseveralyears,especiallysincethewar,andnotwithoutreason,forsocial lifehaslostitbalance,andthereisconflicteverywherethroughouttherul ingnations.Thereisneitherpeacenorsecuritybecauseofsearandrumoursofwars,dissensions,quarrels,murders,incendiarisms,disrespectfor authority,tumults,anduprisingsthatthreatentoparalysetradebring aboutwant,suffering,famine,pestilence,anddeath.
Althoughthenationshavebeenbusy,legislating,holdingpeaceconfer. ences,appointingcommissions.andorganisingeveryformofsociety,peat doesnotappeartobeinprospect.For,likeMartha,theydonotcoin:pre.- bendtheonethingnecessary.
Tosettlethisgreatquestion,andrestoreailthingstoastateoforder andhappiness,theonethingnecessaryisthatthefamilyreturntothe habitofaChristianlife.Andthisistheonlymeanstotheend.Estab lishorderinthehome,andthemuch-neededresultmustnecessarilyfollow. Forthefamilyistheunitofsociety,whichiswhollydependentuponitfor itsexistence,itsgrowthanddevelopment.Sothatcivilsocietyisthesum andsubstanceofdomesticsociety.
ForthistruthwehavethehighestauthorityonChristianDo.trine, inthenotedEncyclicalofPopeLeoXIII.,issuedtotheworldsome.33 yearsago,whereintheHolyFathermadetheunqualifiedstatementthat "societycanonlybehealedbyareturntoChristianlife."
LetthefamilyreturntoChristianrule,andChristianprinciples,and peace,willsoonberestored.Sincethefamilyistheintegralpartofwhich allcivilsocietyisacompound,itnaturallyfollowsthateachpartorunit madeperfecttendstowardtheperfectionofthewhole.Hence,ifallfamiliesofwhichcivilsocietyisacompoundcouldbemadeperfect,thewhole bodyofcivilsocietywould'becomeperfect.Sanctifythefamily,andyou sanctifysociety.

BishopGore'sProtest Inthepast,Anglo-Catholicshave frequentlyprotestedagainst"theexclusiveandarrogantusurpationofthe nameCatholicbytheChurchof Rome."ThelasttodosnwasBishop Gore.whodevotedtothisthemea courseofsermonsdeliveredlastAdventintheGrosvenorChapel,May- fair,London.FatherF.Woodlock, answeredhiminacoursepreach- edatFarm-streetlastJanuary.This coursehasjustbeenpublishedby Longmanswiththetitle''Constantinople.Canterbury.andRome."Father Woodlockhasnodifficultyinshowing thattheBishopisneitherCatholicnor consistent.TheCatholicdoctrine abouttheChurch.isquiteclearand precise,anditisfoundedontheteach- ingofOurLordHimself.TheChurch isthepillarandgroundoftruth.As theApostlesandtheirsuccessorswere commandedtoteachallthetruths containedintheGospel,soallwho heardthemwerecommanded,under painofdamnation,tobelieveallthat theApostlesandtheirsuccessors taught.Hewouldguaranteetheirteaching.Hewouldhewiththemin theirteachingtotheendoftime,the powersofevilandoffalsehoodshould neverprevailagainstHisChurch. Thosewhoheardtheirpreachingheard linn:thosewhodespisedthemde- spisedHimandtheFatherwhosent Him.IfanyonerefusedtoheartheChurchandpreferredhisownprivate

FlatRationalism:
ThisisverydifferentfromDr. Gore'steaching.Accordingtohim thereisnosecuritythattheChurch oftheNewCovenantmaynotgo wrongastheChurchoftheOldCovenantwentwrong.Againandagain theevidenceshowsthatithasdone so,hesays-Throughoutlifeithas beenaprinciplewithhimthat"toacceptecclesiasticalauthorityinthe faceofthebestjudgmentofhisown reasonwouldbeanimpossibletreasonagainstlight-"ThatisnotCatholicdoctrine;itisnotevenorthodoxProtestantism:it'sfiatrationalism.BishopGoreclaimstheright tofollowhisownprivatejudgment againstthejudgmentoftheChurch, butifanyofhishearersventuresto followhisownprivatejudgment againstthatofsomeAnglo-Catholic leaders,hethreatensthemwiththe judgmentofChrist!
Oneoftheplainestthingsinthe NewTestamentisthatJesusChrist taughtwithauthorityandrequiredin HishearersabsolutefaithinandsubmissiontoHisteaching.Ifanyteacherwaseverauthoritativeanddogmatic,JesusChristwas.Andyet Dr.Gore,whoclaimstobeaChristian Bishop,andwhoundoubtedlyisan ableman,tellsusthatChrist"plainly desiredthateverymanshouldthink forhimself":thatHe"wasstrangely adversetothedogmaticmethod,"and thataccordingtoChrist"meresubmissiontodogmaticauthority"wasa spirittohediscouraged.Truthto say,CatholicismandAnglo-Catholic- ismarepolesapartevenonfirstprinciples.
G.K.C.UnderFire Mr.G.K.Chestertonaddressedthe SouthLondonCatholicParliamentat itsmeetingrecentlyon"TheCasefor SmallProperty,"andgaveitashis opinionthatthe.tendencynowadays wasforCapitalismandSocialismto combine.
Itdidnotseemtohimtomake verymuchdifferenceinthelong1un, hesaid,whethertheCapitalistswere inpowerortheSocialists.Theresult ofeitherwouldhethatforthegreat massofthepeopletherewouldbeno property,andthatafewpeoplewould holdorcontrolagreatdealtoomwn propertyandpossesstoomuchpower.
