Inalltwenty-twoCatholicshave beenelectedinGreatBritain.Of these,one,the-veteranT.P.O'Connor, !,aNationalist,threeareLiberals, sevenConservatives,andelevenLabourrepresentatives.TheLabour PartythushasthelargestCatholic contingent,andmoreoveritssuccess washelpedinmanyconstituenciesby alargeCatholicvote.Inthelastten yearstherehasbeenamarkedrally oftheCatholicsinEnglandtothe LabourParty.Onbothsidesthere hasbeenanevolutionofopinionand aclearingofideassincetheearlydays oftheLabourmovement,whenso manyofitsleaderswerestillswayed byoldprejudicesandinfluencedby thewidelyacceptedmis-statements thattheChurchwasonthesideofthe richagainstthepoor,andmaintained "therightdivinetogovernwrong." Catholics,ontheotherhand,toooften confusedtheLabourprogrammeof socialreformwithrevolutionaryCommunism.TheLabourPartyinEnglandhaspubliclyrejectedtheCorn ieunisttheory.Nowherehasthe partyanditsleadersbeenmorebitterlyattackedthaninthenewspapers oftheCommunistgroup.There,however,wasatonetimeaseriouspossibilityofapermanentbreakbetween theCatholicsintheLabourmovement andtheofficialorganisationofthe party.Forawhileintheyearsbeforethewar,theannualTradesUnion ongressincludedinitsI,abourprogrammeseculareducationandanextensionofthedivorcelaw.These itemswereeliminatedfromtheparty policybythepersistentactionofa groupofCatholictradesunionists,led byJamesSexton(nowmemberof ParliamentforSt.Helen's.Lancashire),thesecretaryoftheLiverpool DockWorkers.Hepointedoutthat withoutthisrevisionofthepartyprogrammeLabourwouldlosethesuportofthegreatmassofCatholic workersintheNorth,whowould otherwisesupportit.andfeelthatin sodoingtheywereactingonthe teachingofLeoXIII'sfamousencyclicalonlabour. Catholicstudyofsocialquestions hasundoubtedlyralliedaconsiderable massofvotestotheLabourcause. Afterthewarthepartywonnewadherentsbyaconsiderablewideningof itsbasis.Itdeclaredthatitwasno longerameretradesuniondevelopment,butthatitsoughtthesupport, notofoneclass,butofall"workers withhandandbrain"Thisrallied toitnumbersofwhatarecalledthe "educatedclasses,"anditssupportersandleadersnowincludeuniversitygraduates,professionalmen,nota fewmastersofindustry;manywho haveservedtheStateinvariouscapa- cities,andsomesonsoftitledfamilies. BaitingaPrimeMinister RamsayMacDonald'sMarinershipistobetested,sothecablestellu, TheLabourshipisbeingdrivenintostormwatersbytheLiberals,whoare chagrinedbecausetheslimScotsmanrefusestojumptothecrackofthe LiberalWhip.MacDonaldhassensedtheposition,andheisnotsogreen asapoliticiannottoundetstandtherealmeaningofthesupportwhich madehimPrimeMinisterofEngland.Withouttheloyalhelpofthe Liberalshisadministrationwillnotbeabletodeliverthegoodshepromised theelectorsduringthegeneralelectioncampaign.ThedefeatofthePre portionalRepresentationBill,thoughitwasleftbytheGovernmentan openquestionfortheHousetodecideasitthoughtfit,couldnotbea surprisetohim.Hehadnolikingforit,andalargenumberofhisfollowersvotedwiththeConservatives,theirpledgedopponents,todefeatit. TheangercreatedintheLiberalranksbythedefeatofaparticularplank ofitsprogramme,towhichitisdefinitelycommitted,itnotlikelytobeappeased,andthecongratulationswhichMessrs.AsquithandLloydGeorge sopubliclydeliveredtoMr.SnowdenafterhispresentationoftheBudget, maybeconsiderablyminimisedbytheattitudeoftheLiberalPartywhen theBudgetisoutoftheway.IftheGovernmentisnotpreparedtosacrificeitsindependencebyyieldingimportantprinciplesofpolicytoattract theLiberals'support-andifRamsayMacDonalddecidestoplaythe gameofanindependentLabourPrimeMinister,onedoesn'tneedthevision ofaprophettoforecastthefutureoftheLabourGovernment-given,of course,thattheLiberalshaveenoughcourageandindependencetothrow downthegauntlettoLabour,andchallengeanothervoteoftheelectorsof Britain,bydefeatingLabourintheCommons.Buttheywillscarcelydo that,forthetemperoftheBritishelectorisnotathingtobetrifledwith. evenbytheself-estimatedsuperabilitiesofMessrs.AsquithandLloyd George.Andjustnowthecountryneedsnewadministratorswithcourage, intellectandhonestytorestoreitseconomicstability.Whatseemstobe reallyurgentinthepresentconditionofpoliticalaffairsinBritainisnot somuchtheproportionalrepresentationofpoliticalpartiesintheHouse ofCommons,asanadministrationwiththecourageandgrittograpple withtheproblemsbesettingthenation,andenoughpoliticalhonestytoat leastmakeafairattempttoadjustthem.
Thetaskisnotaneasyorahopefulone.Stagnationanddiscontent areapparentwheretheforcesoflife,industry,andhappinessshouldhavefull play.Politicaljealousiesandpartyantagonismstaketheplaceofco-operation,andagenerouspublicspirittohelpintheworkofreconstruction.If theLabourGovernment'sprogrammeisforthebettermentofthegreatest numberwithintheboundariesofBritain(and,primarily,itshomepolicy iswhatitmustbejudgedby),itwouldbetreasononthepartoftheLiberalsnottohelpgiveeffecttothatprogramme.TorushthenewGovern mentwithwhatismerelyapartydevicetotestitsindependence,andto harrassitinthebeginningofitscareer,showsthereismuchmorevanity andself-seekinginthe'Liberalattitudethanpatriotism.However,there isalimittosuchpoliticaltactics.TheBritishpeople,asawhole,arenot sostupidthattheywilltamelysubmittobecontinuouslyledbythenose ineveryelectionbythetwoprincipalpartiesthathavehithertocon- trolledthedestiniesoftheBritishpeopie.IfthenewGovernmentisat themercyoftheLiberals,andaswordofdefeathangsabovethePrime Minister'shead,heldonlybytheslenderthreadofLiberalpatronage,there islittlehopeofRamsayMacDonaldbeingmorethanthecreatureoftheLib- erals,butheseemstohaveenoughcourageandaudaciousbeliefinthejusticeandefficacyofhispolicytorestoretoitsnaturalbeatthepulseofthe nationthatheisnotafraidtochallengedefeatandanotherappealtothe Britishpeople.IfthetemperoftheLiberalsleadsthemintomakinga rashclearanceoftheLabourGovernmentfromoffice,andanotherappeal totheelectorsismadethisyear,thepeoplewillnotforgetthedespotism oftheLiberals-asapartyandafon.etoblocktheadvanceofprogres- sivelegislationitwillbeirretrievablyshattered.
ButNoOneArose!- AnAmericanProtestantEpiscopalclergymannamedDr.PercySticknayGrant,inafierysermon,deliveredinNewYork,centreofmostof thosethingsMammonandModernismstandfor,recentlygotveryexcited overthebeliefssetforthintheApostle'sCreed,anddramaticallychallenged thoseofhiscongregationwhoprofessedliteralbeliefintheCreedtosignify theirbeliefbystanding.Nooneansweredthechallenge.Completesilence followedtheperemptorydemand.Dr.Grantawaitedtheresultinhispulpit, wearetold,duringafewtensemoments,butnoonearose.Hediscussed theVirginBirth,thedescentintoHell,andtheresurrectionofthebody,and thisAmericanProtestantEpiscopalminister,professinghimselfaministerofChrist,declared:"Mostofthosephrasesareverydifficultforanhonest man."Hefurtherstated:"Christianityhastaughttoomuchaboutfeeling, toomuchaboutlove,andnotenoughabout'knowledge,"then,asiftoputthe copingstoneonhisunbeliefinrevealedreligion,hesaid,evolutionandthe miraclesoftheBibledenyeachother.Yegods!Andthisman,nolonger abelieverintheChristian'sprofessionofFaith,hasnotthehonestytore signhispulpit,butcontinuestopreachasaministeroftheProtestant EpiscopalChurch,which,_itisunderstood,makesthisprofessionofChristianbelief.AndheisnotasolitaryfigurewithintheProtestantChurch. Therearecountlessothers,thegrowthofthatlicenceinprivatejudgment whichisstrippingProtestantismofwhatlittleofspirituallifewasleftinit aftertheReformation.NowonderthatLutheranismisbeginningtoexamineitsconscience,andisdrawingnearertothatoldMotherChurchfrom whichitsrebelfounderapostatised.Nowonderthatthestreamofconverts fromProtestantismisincreasingastheyearsrollon,andthemoreDr PercyStickneyGrantsthatcryouttheirModernismfromProtestantpulpits,thestrongerthatstreamwillgrow.Afterall,honestmenloveTruth andConsistency.
