Duringthetwo-weeks'progressofthe Missiontheexerciseswerewellattended.FatherMoloneyandhiszealous assistant,FatherLynch,weretireless intheireffortstomakethefirstMissioninSt.Mary'sablessingtoevery Catholicintheparish,andamemory thatwouldbetreasuredthroughmany yearstocome.Everyhomewasvisited,allwereinvitedtopartakeofthe greatgracesofferedtothosewhodevoutedlyfollowedtheexercises-The results,onthetestimonyoftheMissioner,wereverypleasing.Manywho hadneglectedtofrequenttheSacramentsmadetheirpeacewithGod,and gavepromiseofbecomingmorefervent intheFaith-AftertheRosary,which wasrecitedwithgreatfervourbythe largecongregation,FatherTouhy preachedapowerfulsermononthe promisemadebythepeopleofJosue tohimjustbeforehiedeathwhen theyrenewedthecovenantbetween themandGod:"Wewillservethe LordOurGod,andwewillbeobedienttoHisCommandments.";twas aneloquentappealformorefervourin thepracticeofreligionagreaterdevotiontoGod,andaconstantresistancetothosetemptationsandallurementswhichdrawthesoulawall-from Him.TherewerewhisperedexpressionsofregretwhenFather Touhy,attheconclusion,indeclaringtheMissionclosedandannouncinghisgratitudeforits success,intimatedthatitwouldbehis lastMissioninAustralia,ashewas returningtothePhjllipines,wherehe hadspentmanyyearsoffruitfulserviceintheMissionfield.Recently hishealthhasbeensomewhatindifferent.buttherewasneevidenceof physicalweaknessinhisworkforGod andsoulsduringtheMissibnatSt. Mary's,anditwill,wearesure,remain anabidingmemorywiththosewho sharedinitsfavoursduringtheexercises.

OpponentsofthecalibreofJosephMcCabe,whodelightaiflingingtheir pebblesagainsttheCatholicChurch,accuseherofbeingtheenemyofScience'. andofbeingterriblyafraidofit.Theyevenbrutallychargeherwithhat, ingexercisedherpowersandinfluencetosmotherScience.InCincinattire centlytherewasameetingofAmericanScientists,whenvariouspointsof viewrespectingthetroubledquestionofreligionandsciencewereconsidered OfthatgatheringaCatholiccontemporarysays:
"Thegeneralattitudeofthescientistsgatheredthereseemedtobefa:moretolerantthansimilarmeetingsadecadeago.Therewerenomilitant challenges,andbutfewmentionsofsuperstitionsandprejudices.'thisisal tothegood,creditablealiketotheforcesofreligion,asitistotheforcesof science.Naturallyscientistsabsolvethemselvesfromallsuperstitionin theirsuperiorrealmofknowledge.Butwithouththeslightestdesireofer gagingincontroversythehistoryofscienceforthelastfiftyyearswillshow aratherrespectablenumberofprejudicesandnotafewharshintolerance: Oneofthespeakersattheconferenceshowedtherewasaperfectaccon; inthelivesofmanyscientistsbetweenreligionandlearning.Hadhebeta moreversedinthematter,hecouldhavedemonstratedthatevensanctity couldgrowinscientificsouls.AsfarastheCatholicChurchisconcern ed,ithasnottheslightestenmitytowardsscience.Nothingthatlearn ingcanscientificallydemonstratewill'wforeigntoit.Itdesiresthecone radeshipofscience.ItalwayshasItcanclaimitsshareofsonsand daughters,sincerelydedicatedtoscience.Ithasfostereditthroughthe ages-Itshistorians,philosophers,andtheologianshavemadeuseofscier tificinformation.TheChurchwishesthedestructionofsuperstitionand ignorancewithasmuchzealasthemeetintolerantscientist.
