ThepopulationofAlbania,the youngestindependentStateinEurope, isapproximately850,000souls.Of these,over475,000areMussulmans,dividedintotwosects,theorthodoxSuni andtheBektashi,bothofwhom,however,comeundertheecclesiasticaljurisdictionoftheAlbanianNational MussulmanCouncil,whichhasdeclareditscompleteindependenceofthe TurkishCaliphate.

Theremainderofthepopulationis Christian,Catholic,andOrthodox.For themostparttheCatholics,whonumberapproximately150,000,areconfinedtotheNorth;theOrthodox,tothe South.ThetwoChristiancommunitiesarethusseparatedbyasolid wedgeofMussulmans,whoarealsoto befoundinlargenumbersevenwhere theChirstianspredominate.

Thisdivisionofthepopulationinto fourseparatereligionsisreflectedin theprovisionconstitutionoftheState, whichispresidedoverbyaDirectory, composedoffourRegents-oneCatholic,oneOrthodox,andtwoMussulman--whojointlyperformthefunctionsofastrictlyconstitutionalmonarch,whoreignsbutdoesnotrule.

TheGovernmentofthecountryisin thehandsofaCabinetofMinisters, dependentonaParliamentelected throughthemediumofelectoralcolleges.

ThepresentPrimeMinisterisan ableandenergeticyoungmountain chieftain,AchmetZogubyname,who maybedescribedasaveryfreethinkingMussulman.ThereisoneCatholicMinister,thatofFinance.Among theChristiandeputiesthereareseveralpriests,allofwhomwearheavy moustachesorbeards,which,inadditiontotheirdress,distinguishtheCatholicfromtheOrthodox.

Nevertheless,thefighttodefendthe remnantsofCatholicismintheseoutof-the-waydistricts,hasbeenaterrible one.Ithasbeenafightmoreagainst PaganismandIndifferentismthan againstIslam.AlbanianMoslemism isverysuperficial.UndertheTurks itwasusefultobeaMussulman,and whereChrisiianity,cutofffromthe outerworld,weakeneditsgrasp,many turnednominalMoslemsforthe'sake ofsecuringeasierrelationswiththe dominantpo'.ver.Thereareeven recentsurvivalsofasecretcultof Christianity(inCentralAlbania. whenceChristianityhadbeenapparentlyeradicated)carryingonunderan outwardconformitywithIslam.

ArilethestudentsareOrthodox. ButTCatholicseminaryoftheSlav riteissoontoheopenedinthatcity, andwilltakeitsstudentstothe coursesattheInstitute."

Somelooklike,somesmelllike,none TasteLikeUNIONBEER.

Aclean-shavenmanislookedupon aseffeminatebythemountaineers; therforenonearetobeseen,noteven amongthepriests,whosedutytakes themintothemountains. CatholicChristianityhassubsistedin themountainssincetimeimmemorial. Skanderbeg,whowithstoodtheonslaughtoftheTurksthrougheleven victoriouscampaignstowardstheclose ofthe15th.century(untilhemethis deathinbattle),isrenownedasaCatholicaswellasanationalhero.Mass isstillsaidforhissoul,andthejacket ofthenationalcostumeisstilldyed blackinsignofmourningforhis death.

PositionofCatholics. odertheGovernmentoffreeAlbaniathismuchcanbesaid:NoChristianstandsanylongerinaposition ofdisadvantageonaccountofhisreligion.RuttheMussulmansremain inthemajority,andtheirfatalismand traditionsmakehabitsofmind,which areinimicaltoprogress.Sothegallant-fightoftheJesuitswiththeir schoolsaScutari,keptopenandeven extendinginthefaceofthemostdishearteningfinancialdifficulties,andof theheavily-moustachedFranciscan Friars,whohavekeptthelightburninginthemountainsthroughthecenturiesbydintofaheroismwhichcannotbeexaggerated,muststillcontinue.

ThepersecutionoftheTurksswept thelandcleanofChristianity,save amongthemountains,wheretheTurkishtroopsfailedtopenetrate.But later,intheopencountryoftheSouth, Christianityreappearedintheformof theOrthodoxGreekChurch,which aloneofChristiansectswaspermitted thefreeexerciseofitsreligionandthe establishmentofschools.Buteven theyweresorelyoppressed,andinthe lastcenturybegantoturnindespair toGreeceforemancisation.TheCatholicsinthemountainousNorthlivedaprecariousexistence.Foratime theyfellundertheprotectionofVenice,whoheldtheircapital,Scutari,for manydecades.But,forthemost part,untilAustriabegantochampion theircause,theywerelefttotheirown resources. Theseweremeagreenough:their tribalorganisation,Turkishapathy, andthemountains.Thustheysurvived;buteverywhere,exceptinthe Mirdisia,wheretheirmountaindefenceswerepeculiarlystrong,theinroads ofIslamcontinued.Manytribes camehalf-Mussulmanandhalf-CatholicReligiousfanaticismhaseverbeen absentamongAlbanians,andinthe mountainsthereweretraditions,older thaneitherreligion,whichformeda commondenominatorofsympathybetweenthetwosections.Thetribal lawofLek.whichshowspartlyPagan andpartlyRomanorigins(Lekissupposedtohavebeenacontemporaryof Skanderbeg).wasanothercommon bond.Likewise,theparamountneed oftribaldefence.Soherethetwo communitieshavegrownupsideby sidewithoutanyfundamentalantag oniFm.

MarriageCustoms.

Itisnotsurprisingthatinthesecircumstancestherearetobe\foundsome curiouscustomsnotseenelsewherein Christendom.Especiallypaganore someofthemarriagecustoms.The bride,forexample,carrieswithher fromherhomeoneinvariablegift-a pairoffire-tongs;andsheherselfis carried,usuallystruggling,bythenearestmalerelationsofherprospective

AnumberoflittleCatholicAlbanian schoolshavesprunguplikemushroomsduringthelastthreeyearsin placeswherenoschoolshadeverbeen heardofnorpermittedbefore.But intheabsenceofroads,inthebitter extremesofwinterandsummer,inthe immensedistancesfromcentretocentrewhichthewildandbrokencountrymakes,amidtheabjectpovertyof thepeople,itwillbelongbeforemuch visibleprogessismadeorthehardshipsofthosewhohaveshoulderedthe burdenofministeringtotheneedsof thepeopleintheseparts-socloseto thehubofcivilisationandyetso far-canhopetobealleviated.-Major J.S.Barnes,inthe"Universe."

IncreasedGoodwill. Catholiccommitteesfortheaidof RussianshavebeenfoundedinParis, Lyons,Marseilles.ToulouseandNice. ThesecommitteesseekoutRussians withoutresourcesandprocureindustrialoragriculturalworkforthem. Theyfindlodgingsforstudentsand sendchildrentoschool.Theyelse takecareofthematvacationtime.

"TheCatholicinstitutionsofhigher learning,"Mgr.Chaptalwrites,"inall partsofFrance.haveacceptedgratis, orsemi-gratis,hundreds,af-children fromfamilieswhichwereformerlyin comfortablecircumstances.andare educatingtheminkeepingwiththeir socialrank.Thishaswonthedeepestgratitudeandenthusiasmamong thefamiliesofthesechildrenandfew factshavecontributedsomuchtoin,reasedgoodwillbetweentheOrtho. (loxandtheCatholicChurch.Onthe otherhand.theseeducationalinstitutionshavenotceasedtoexpressthe satisfactiongivenbytheRussian,students,boysandgirls,whohavebeen entrustedtothem. Thepollingsappeartohavebeen veryheavy,beingabout80percent. oftheelectorsintheboroughsand about75forthecounties.Except thattheLiberalandLabourgains wereexcessive,theresultsareabout whatwasfreelypredicted.InWales andScotlandtheConservativesare onlyoneseattothebad,butthenthey hadsofewtolosethatfurtherlosses werehardlypbssible.InLondon, havinglostfifteenseats,theystillhold 29outofthe32.IntheEnglishboroughsthenetConservativelosseswere 29,ofwhichLaboursecuredanetgain of19andtheLiberals10.IntheEnglishcountiestheConservativeslost53 seatsandgained10,theLiberalssecuring34oftheselosses,andtheLabouritesonly9,andaseatfromanIndependent.Thiswasoneofthesur, prisesofthepollings.

TheConservativesmadeastrongbid fortheLabourvote.Thelessgoods imported,themorewouldbemadeat home,andthereforethefewerofthem wouldcontinueunemployed.CertainlyMr.RonaldNIcNeill'scontributiontothisargumentoughttohave "fetched'em.'"IftheGovernment's presentpolicyweresuccessful,then fromtherevenuetheywouldgeton importedgoodstheyintendedtoreduce,andwouldknockoffaltogether. existingdutiesonsuchthingsastea, tobacco,sugar,andpossiblybee."So Mr.McNeill(oneoftheUnder-Secretaries)mustexpecttoraiseabout £230,000,000fromonlyjustover£200,000,000ofmanufacturedimports-not allofwhicharetobetaxed,atleast sosaysMr.Amery,oftheBoardof Trade.

Mr.LloydGeorge,arguing,however. fromadifferentstandpoint,speaking inLondononNovember21st.said: "SettlepeaceinCentralEuropeand tradewouldlookafteritself."Butin theHouseofCommonsonJuly16th (therebeingnoGeneralElectionin prospect),NI-r.LloydGeorgesaid: "Supposeto-morrowa-ouhadreal peaceinEurope,wouldthatgiveyoti prosperity?ThemomentpeaceisestoredinEuropeyouwillfindyourselffacetofacewithrealrivany competition."

Thespeechesofeminent'politicians arealwaysinterestingwhencompared withthosetheyhadpreviouslydelivered.ThoseofMr.LloydGeorge asgivenabove,aresepacatodfrom eachotherbyfourmonths

thatwillmakeitverydifficulttocompetewithher.Ifthetimecomes thatshefindsherselfpayingReparations,thosecanonlybepaidbyexports,sothatweshall.havetoface inthefutureanexportfromGermany overandaboveeverythingwehave everknownfromherbefore.'

SotheBritishelectorsnavatebelievethatwhilepeace bringabout atraderevivalandlesserimeinployment.thisverypeacewillbringabout aseriousmenacetoBritishmanufacturinginterests,andthereforeintensify disemployment.

ContrarytoexpectationsfreelyexpressedintheEnglishPress,theCapitalLevyputforwardbytheLabour Partydoesnotappeartohavedone themmuchharm.Indeed,their strengthhasbeenincreasedbyabout 50seats,thetruthbeingthatithasnot beentakenseriouslyinanyportionof GreatBritainwheretheLabour strengthlies.intheotherhand,the promisedsubsidytoAgricultureseems tohavetoldheavily.Theconstituenciesinwhichagricultureisthemain industryhaveeitherreturnedConservativesinEngland,orLiberalsin WalesandScotland.Innorthern Yorkshire,andbeyondittowardsScotland,theConservativesoccupyanextensiveandsolidblock.InKent, Sussex,andadjoiningdistricts,andin thesouthernneighbourhoodofLondon,thesameresultshaveappeared. Morewillbeheardoftheproposedsubsidy.especiallyifanallianceofsome kindcanbearrangedwiththeLiberals. nowunitedunderAsquithandLloyd George.TheideaisworthconsideringbytheGovernmentoftheFree State,ifIreland'sareaunderwheat:s toberescuedfromalmost,complete extinction.Thenastooldagepensions:itshouldbenotedthatboth Mr.AsquithandLloydGeorgehave promisedtohavesweptawaythevarioushindrancestoclaimantswhoare qualifiedapartfromcertainlittlesavingsandsmallinvestmentsandother resultsofhavingledthriftylivesan smallwages.

Astothe'vastincreaseintheLab. ourstrength,thisistobeattributed partlytotheloweredfranchiseandthe shorteningofthequalifyingperiodand thepassingoffemalesuffrage,which giveseverymarriedworkmantwoor moreextravotes.In1910therewere 42Labourmembers.In1918these were61:in1922,142:andnowthere are192.The142got4,247,800votes. by-the-bye,the192getting4148.379,or only100,000votesmore.

Butthe42Labourmembersin1910 weremostlymembersoftradeunions orsecretariesofLabourorganisations. Amongstthe142,andstillmore amongstthe192,areallkindsofcandidatesnotinanywayconnecteddirectlywitheitherminesorfactoriesor workshopsofat Mr.Gladstone'stim R uentlyindeedto theycouldlyhave stoodas rats.Someofhemare Non-confo'st s, ersbeing journalists, essors,and diplomatists.Terrleader,Mr.RamsayMacdonald,isnomoreaworkman thanMr.AsquithorStephenBaldwin. Properlytounderstandthesignificanceofthisaddress,itmustbeexplainedthattheradicalandsocialist parties(whowerethesupportersof theanti-religiouspolicyunderthe Combesregime)havebegunanextremelyactivecampaignofpropaganda toinfluencetheelectionstobeheldin May,1924,fortheentirerenewalof theChamberofDeputies.Theydesire,atanyprice.tocapturethepower ofthe"NationalBloc,"which,having wonthedayin1919,haspursueda policyofrestorationineverydomain andhaspermittedthegovernmentto renewrelationswithRomeandsolve thequestionspertainingtothesitua tionoftheCatholicChurchinFrance byanagreementwiththeHolySee.

TooverthrowtheNationalBIOCthe radicalsand'ocialistsareexploiting theeconomic-sodfinancialdifficulties whichinevitablyfollowedthewar,the greatlyincreasedtaxationwhichwas votedandtheseveritywhichthegovernmenthasbeenobligedtoshowtowardpublicofficialsinordertoreduce publicburdens.

MessagetotheNation. Itwasagainstthiscampaignthat followinganoffieiatluncheongivenat Evreux,inNormandy,thePresident oftheRepublicdeliveredaspeech whichhehimselfhasqualifiedasa messagetotheFrenchnation.After defendingandpraisingthefiscal,social andpoliticalworkofthepresentmajorityintheChamber,\I.Millerand spokeseveraltimesofthereligious question,concerningwhichthepresent administrationalsohasbeenattacked bythepartiesoftheleft.

Firstofallhecongratulatedthe Parliamentonhavingvotedinfavour ofthere-establishmentofdiplomatic relationswiththeVatican.

"Therentwalofrelationsbetween theRepublicandtheHolySee,demandedbytheexactviewofourinterestsabroad,aswellasbytheexampleofpeopleswhoareleastsuspectedofsympathyforthePapacy," besaid,"wouldhavemet,sixyears ago,theoppositionofanarrowand falseconceptionoftheroleoftheRepublicanandsecularState."

Separatedfromthechurches,theRepublicmustmaintainanattitudeof deferencetowardallreligions,M.Millerandsaid.Thisattitudeshowsa remarkableprogressoverthatofthe authorsofthelawofSeparationwhe continuallysaid:"Wewishtoignore atreligions"ThefollowingquotationfromthePresidentialaddressis veryexplicit:

"BytheSeparationofChurchand State.theRepublicgaveanaturalconclusiontotheinvariabledoctrineof theFrenehGovernmentthatnointrusionofanyspiritualpowercanbetoleratedinthedomainofcivilpower.

TheRepublicisallthemoreatease formaintainingtowardallreligions theattitudeofdeferencewhichisdue them.Noconsiderations,therefore. couldrestrainitfromrenewingdip.a maticrelationswiththeVatican,happyif,whileservingtheinterestsofits foreignpolicy,itmightcontribute,by thesamegesture.tointeriorpacification."

Asregardsfreedomofeducation,M. Millerand,farfromdemandingthe monopoly,claimedbythedisciplesof Combes,proclaimedthattheState shouldacceptwithgratitudetheassistanceofprivateeducation.Hesaid:

"TheUniversitydoesnotfearfreedomofeducation.Itconsidersitan indispensableelementofemulation andprogress.

"Ifpublicauthority.requiresstrict controlofalleducationalestablishments,especiallywhentheyshelter children,itfeelstookeenlytheneed andbenefitofprivateinitiative,not toacceptitsaidwithgratitude."

Anotherandstillmoreimportant statement,referredtoreligiouscongregations.Inaffirmingthenecessity forallFrenchmen"toworkinthe organisationandformwhichsuits thembest,"herecognisedandproclaimedtherighttoliveincongregation.

"Isnotacenturyandahalfofap- prenticeshipofpoliticalliberty,traversed,itistrue,bynumerousstorms, sufficienttoconvinceusthatthefree expressionofallreligiousbeliefs,underthereignofthelaw,isthevery formulaofprogressinorder?"heasked."Thiscountryhasneedforits restoration,thatallitssonsshould

work,whole-heartedly,intheorganisationandformwhichsuitsthembest.

"TheauthorofthelawofJuly1, 1901onthefreedomofassociation, whosefrienetandcollaboratoritwas myhonourthhavebeen,protestedon everyoccasionthatheinnowayin tendedtoexcludefromlegalassociationsthecongregationswhoseutility wasrecognisedandtowhomauthorisationwouldbegrantedaccoiclingto theformsprovidedfor.Itwouldbe anaudaciousdefianceofbothtopretendtocoverbythenameofWaldeck-Rousseau 1knownotwhatsort ofareturntoasectarianismwhich hefoughtuntilhisdeath."

Toexplainthislaststatement.it mustberecalledthatWaldeck-Rousseau,afterhavingbroughtaboutthe passageofthelawonassociations, whichimposeduponreligiouscongregationstheobligationofsoli(itinglegal authorisation,reproachedhissuccessor, Combes,forviolatingthespiritofthis lawbyrefusingalltheauthorisations whichwereaskedofhim.M.Millerand,whowasaministerintheWaldeck-RousseauCabinet,alsofoughtthe policyofM.Combes.WithoutseekingtheextenttowhichWaldeck-Rousseaumaybereproachedforhaving openedthewayforasubsequentdevelopmentofreligioussectarianismby undertakingareformoftherightof association,itissufficienttonotethat to-day,whenhehasreachedthehighestofficeintheState,M.Milleranddemandstherightofassociationforreligiouscongregations,andthatina messageaddressedtotheentirenation heprotestssolemnlyagainstanypossiblereturntosectarianism.

Asthoughbettertoemphasisethe scopeofhisspeech,thePresident,beforeleavingEvreux,expressedadesiretovisittheCathedral,wherehe wasreceivedbytheBishop,Mgr.Chauvin,whomhecomplimentedonthepatrioticattitude-oftheclergy.ThesignificanceofthisgestureofthePresidentescapednoone.

Millerand'sAppealUnusual.

TheEvreuxspeechhasbeenwidely commenteduponinthepressand throughoutthecountry.Inthefiftythreeyearssincetheestablishmentof theThirdRepublic,neverhasachief executivethustakentheinitiativeof interveningbeforetheopeningofthe electoralcampaign\torcommendtothe citizenswhoareabouttoexercisethe rightofsuffrageacertainpolicyin preferencetoanother.Thepolicyto whichM.Millerandhasgiventhefull supportofhisauthorityisaislicy ofnationalententeandreligioustoleranceaswellasaprogrammeofwork andsocialprogress.WhiletheradicalsandsocialistsaffirmthatthePresidenthasviolatedtheconstitutionby appealingtopublicopinionbefprean electoralconsultation,andwhilethey arefightingwithviolencethedomesticpolicyexplainedatEvreux,the organsofalltheotherparties,especiallytheCatholicpapers,arecongratulatingthePresidentonhisenergetic actforthegoodofthecountry.

TheAnglicanBishopBury,vhose dioceseappearstoincludemostofold Europeeastward-oftheRhine,and whoseclergyaretheEnglishchaplains appointedtovariousplacesinthisregion,towhichtouristsandinvalids fromEnglandresort,haslatelybeen visitingRussia.Hehasbeendisappointingthe"Reunionists,"whocount uponanalliancebetweenCanterbury andMoscow,bygivingitashis,pinionthat"theOrthodoxChurchison itslastlegs."Dr.Bury'sfrankestimateofthesituationisprobablyquite correct,forheisoneofthosewhoin thepastexpectedgreatthingsfrom theofficialOrthodoxChurchofRussia,andwouldnaturallybeveryreluctanttoadmititsfailuretoholdits ownafterthedownfalloftheCzardomonthesupportofwhie'tithad dependedsolong.SomeoftheBishop'scriticsarguethathamusthe mistaken,becauseinMoscow,despite thepersecution,largecongregations attendtheOrthodoxchurcheswhich

arestillopen.ButBishopBurydoes notassertthattheOrthodoxChurch hasdisappearedoutofexistence.What hisstatementmeansisthatitisno longerapowerfulbodyandthatitis distinctlyonthedowngrade.The factisthatafterhavingbeenforeel, turieshoundhandandfoottothe secularposer,itfindsitisalmostimpossibletoadaptitselftothenewstate ofthings.Thedebacle--thegeneral breakingup-hasbegun.Numbersof thosewhoundertheoldregimebelongedtotheOrthodoxChurchandattended_itsservicesaspartoftheir loyaltytotheCzarandtheirpatriotic devotiontoallthatwasRussian,have droppedtheirthinveneerof"Orthodoxy"andlapsedintoindifferentism orsheerrationalism.Othershave thrownintheirlotwiththenew churchorganisedbytheSovietGovernment,apparentlynotaveryconsiderablebody.Largenumbershave madetheirpeacewiththeCatholic Church.Inthesouthadistinctmovementonthepartofalargenumberof Orthodoxprelatesforreunionwiththe HolySeehasbeentemporarilycheckedbytheSovietconquestof'the Ukraine.Themovementfoundpracticalexpressionintheresolutionsof theSynodofKharkov,duringthe timeoftheshort-livedUkraineRepublic.Thismighthaveresultedinthe reunionofalltheUkrainewiththe CatholicChurchbutforDenikin'sunhappyaltempttorestoretheCzardom bytheinvasionsofthesouthwithhis filibusteringarmy.Thisbroughtthe Sovietarmiesfromthenorthina triumphantmarchtotheBlackSea andthesouthwaslefthelplessinthe handsofLenin'sGovernment.-"Cas tholicTimes."

Thereweremanyvoicescalling"Ahoy there"-"Conservative,Liberaland Labourbuttherewasonevoicethe worldhadnotlistenedtosofar-that oftheCatholicChurch.whichstood forindividualliberty,andtheright theworkingmantoearnalivingwags GreatBritainwasborninCatholisna, nursedandspentheryouthinituntil,in1534,shebrokeawayfromEuropeancivilisation.Somepeople mightaskthequestion, hasthe CatholicChurchtodowithpolitics?"

TheanswerwastheCatholicChurch wastheonlyguardianoftherightsof thepeople(Cheers.)TheCatholic Church.however,regardedmannot merelyasaneconomicbeing,butas havingabodyandsoul,anditwas thesoulthatmatteredofbothman andthenation.Britaingavetwo

minuteseverytwelvemonthstothe memoryofitsdeadsoldiers,butthe CatholicChurchdevotedeverysecond ofitsexistencetothememoryofthe dead.Manwasthebestgiftanation couldhave,amagnificentcreationoriginatingawayhackinGod'sown brightandbeautifuleternity.Tolive andtoworkwere Man'sInbornRights, ofwhichnoStateofGovernment coulddeprivehim,andtheterribleindignitytoamanofhavingtostand outsideaLabourBureauholdingout hisskeletimhandsfor15s.aweekwas aninsulttothenameofanation. (Applause)Ilehadalsotherights totheeffectsofhislabourprovided theydidnotinterferewiththegood ofthecommunity,andanadditional rightintheguidanceofthenation. Thenation'sfirstdutyshouldbethe li'sertyandhappinessoftheunitof itsexistence--thehome.Amidstthe tumultofthepresent,Englishmenslavestoindustrialcapitalism,wageearnerswhoforthemostpartcould notconceiveanyradicalchangeof economicconstitutions--woulddo welltorememberthattheyextinguishedthelightofpoliticalliberty duringthatgreatchangeinEngland's civilisation-theReformation.The Reformation,continuedFatherIgnatius,wasbuiltonthedestructionof homelife.Divorcemeantthesmashingofthehomelifeofthenation,and Englandto-daywascommittingsuicidebyherownrighthandbecauseshe supportedthedestructionofthehome Divorcewasacrimeagainstthelife ofanynation,becauseitspoiledthat whichmatteredmost---thehome.Bri tainhungeredfor AWayOutofthePresentCrisis, andtheCatholicChurchwasthebeaconlightthatwouldleadtheindividualandthenationtothefullestenjoymentofhumanliberty.Nations whichhaddespisedherhadfailed,nationswhichwerefaithfultoherwould befreewiththefreedomofthechildrenof('sod."OnlygivetheCatholic Churchachance,"urgedFatherIgnatius,"placeherinheroldpositionin thiscountry,andIpromisethatinten years'timewewillhaveadifferent economiccondition.Youcannotfind anysolaceoutside Church."

fievidenceofthepopularityof li,FatherSmithwererequired,itwas suppliedinabundanceattheCatholic YoungLadies'ClubRoomsonThursday,17th.inst..whennearly300friends ofthedepartingguestjoinedinafarewellsocial.FatherSmithhasbeen ouryoungpeople'sfriendeversince hecametotheState,andhasalways beenunspairinginhisworktohelp along(tholicassociationsforthegirls andboysofthecity.Heisperhaps bestknownthroughhisassociation withtheCatholicYoungLadiesClub, andthefarewellspeechesoftheeveningborefrequentreferencestothe marvellousworkbehasdoneforthis excellentCatholicAssociation.Father SmithhasseenthattheCatholicsof to-morrowaretheyoungpeopleoftoday,andhaslaidthefoundationof# well-informedself-reliantgroupofCatholicyoungmenandwomen,who,if theyavailthemselvesoftheopportunitieswhichthroughtheRev.Father's effortshavebeenprovidedforthem willrepresentCatholicidealsinthe citizenorganisationsofthefutureto anextentunthoughtofatthepresent time.

AsChairman,theRevFatherJ. Lynch(Leederville)paidatributeto onewhosincetheinceptionofthe YoungLadies'Clubhasdischargedthe dutiesofhisofficeasChaplainfaithfullyandwell.Hisuntiringzealand deepinterest-takenintheclubhas beenmainlyresponsibleforthegreat successandrapidprogressmadein suchashortspaceoftime.Father Smithhadinterestedhimselfinevery branchoftheclub-tearooms,social andintellectual,andinthislatter capacityitwouldnotbeeasytofind hisequal.Asalecturerhewasinterestingandlucid;asanadjudicator ofthedebatesfairandimpartial;and asanorganisershrewdand_farseeing. FatherLynchsympathisedwiththe C.Y.L.C.onFatherSmith'stransferto Coolgardie.ThespeakertooktheopportunityofthankingFatherSmithon behalfoftheLeedervilLiHibernians forthehelphehadgiventheDr.KennedyMemorialFund.HealsothankedtheC.Y.L.C.forthepracticalhelp theClubhadgiventothesamefund. HethencalleduponMissGladys Henrytospeakonbehalfofthemembers. MissHenrysaidtheoccasionwas anything,butajoyfulone.Theclub wasnotonlylosingoneofitsChaplains,buteachandeverymemberfelt thatshewaslosingapersonalfriend. IIistransferwasagreatlosstothe Clubandtheonlyconsolationlayin thehopethatsomedayFatherSmith mightreturn.MissHenrygavethe historyoftheformationoftheClub anditssmallbeginningintheParish HallatHighgate.andhowatlast,with theincreaseinmembership,thegirls venturedforthintothecity,wherethe membershipwasgreatlyaugmentedby girlsfromallthecityparishes.Eventually.thankstothewiseguidanceof FatherSmithandtheenthusiasmhe evoked,.thepresentbeautifulrooms ;resecured.Thespeakerwasloud inherpraiseoftheRev.Father'sadvice.andattributedthesuccessofthe Clubwhollytohim.Hissuccessin thisdirectionwasfollowedbytheremarkableenthusiasmaml,supporthe receivedfromtheCatholicladieswho formedaLadies'Auxiliaryforthepun poseofprovidingluncheonroomsfor Catholicgirlswhoworkinthecity. Anothersuccessoftheirguestwasthe formationofaLiteraryandDebating Circleofyoungmenandwomen.who areagreatcredittohim.Asasmall tokenoftheesteeminwhichheis held.theRev.Fatherwasthenpresentedwithagoldwristletwatchfrom themembersoftheClub,LiteraryCircle.andtheLadies'Auxiliary,toremindhim,MissHenrysaid,ofthe pleasanttimeshehashadattheClub.

OnbehalfoftheLiteraryandDebatingCircle,Mr.'1.Whitelyexpressed thegrititucieofmemberstoFather Smith,andsaidalllookedfprwardto tnsreturn,whenagrandwelcome Lomewillbeextendedtohim.

Amongstthecrowdtobidfarewell toeatnerSmithwereanumberof Highgateparishioners,forwhomMr. Dullardmadeapresentation.Mr. Dullardspokeoftheadmirationand esteeminwhichFatherSmithwasheld inHighgate,andofthegoodworkhe haddoneintlxparish,andhopedthat atsomenearfuturetimeametropolitanparishwouldhaveforitsparish priesttheRev.Father.

InahappylittlespeechtheRev. FatherCrowley,onhisownandthe parishioners'behalf,wishedFather Smitheverysuccess.Hewassorry toloseFatherSmith,butwaspleased :ithispromotion.

Mr.MaxwellalsospokeofFather Smith'sgoodworkintheparish,and foundtomecomfortinthethoughtof thepromotionthatthetransfermeant. HealsoassuredFatherSmithofthe welcomethatawaitedhimonhisreturn.

Mr.DohenysaidthathecongratulatedFatherSmithonhispromotion tosuchafarfamedparish,theextent ofwhose-territorywasasbigasthe wholeofIreland.

FatherLynch,ofMay-lands,spoke ofFatherSmithasaneighbour,and FatherButlerspokeofhimasacollegecompanionandfriend,whose lossheregretted.Mr.Keneally,of Highgate,alsospokeofthegoodqualitiesofthedepartingguest.

Inhisresponse,FatherSmithexpressedhisgratitudetothegirlsofthe Clubfortheirloyal,intelligentcooperationinthepursuitofthegrand idealofCatholicassociations. He founditdifficulttoleavethem,and hewouldalwaysrememberthetime whenhewasassociatedwiththem,and thisnightinparticular.Hehoped thatonhisreturnhewouldfindthat theClubhasprogressedrapidly.With regardtohisfriendsatHighgate,he consideredthatasayoungmanhewas fortunateinwitnessingsuchdeepfaith andkindlygenerosity,andhethanked themoneandall,andtheClubinparticular.forthefarewelltenderedto him.

TheopinionexpressedbyLordBirkenheadinhisRectorialaddress,that internationaljusticecouldonlybevindicatedbymeetingforcewithforce, hasbeenchallengedbyFatherCharlesCooksey,S.J.Birkenhead,inthe learnedJesuit'sjudgment,totallyignoredboththepowerofmoralunion andthefactsofhistory.Goddidnotlightonthesideofthebiggestbattalions.

Thenumbersareup-theBaldwinGovernmenthasfallen-fallengently. Therewasnouproariousjoyonthesideofthevictors;nodramaticincidents;noclassicoratory.ThedefeatoftheConservativesisnocommonplaceevent.InEnglanditmeansmuchtoencrustedtraditions,it meansabigmoveontoanalterationinthatoldorderthathasbeenreligiouslyobservedinSt.Stephen'sthroughgenerations--theascendancyof vestedinterests.TheLiberalsandTorypartychestshavebeensubsidised intheinterestsoftheclasses-themassesweremerelyapoorrelation.But byastrangeturninthewheelofFortunathespokesmanofthemassesand hiscolleaguesfindthemselvesintheseat,uiauthority.Itisanhistoric incident.Whatwillhappen?Willitjustbemerelyaninedays'wonderorwillitbroadeninto goodforthenation!Politicaleventshave movedrapidlyinEnglandsincethewar.TheadventoftheLabourParty topowerinEnglandmarksaleapforwardtoarealdemocracy.Labour willnotruthlesslysmashthenation'sideals-itdarenot,ifitwould.It comes,ashasbeencleverlysaid,intopowerincustody.Itsuplifthasbeen sudden;itsdescentwillbejustassuddenshoulditattempttheundesirable ofattemptingtoreformthenationwiththephilosophyoftheRedInternationale.AgainstRamsayMacdonaldthecombinedforcesofvestedinterestsinBritainwillfightdoggedlytothelastditch--thatmuchcanbe predicted.

RamsayMacdonaldisasteady-goingreformer,adourlookingcisizen,if the"West's"photographisaspeakinglikeness.lieobviouslyisnowildeyediconoclastwithrosyvisionsofatriumphantmarchwithheavyboots overthecenturiedtraditionsof"MerrieEngland."Hecertainlycarries thebanneretteofanewerainEnglishhistory,butincarryingithewill havetowalkwarilyandpickhissteppingstonesoverthe"fords."Andhe knowsit.Heentersuponhisjobwithearnestandsincerenotionsofsolvingtheproblemsthatlayattherootsofthosegrowingweedsofdiscontent whicharemenacingthepeaceandprosperityofthenation.ThereisasportingchancegivenhimbytheLiberalstodothatclean-upwhichbothLiberalismandLabourareagreedisnecessaryinthatallegedmess-upwhich thelateGovernmentisheldresponsiblefor.ButwhethertheLiberals willlethimhaveafreehandisanothermatter-theyareouttoserve theirmeninterests.Primarily,afterthedissolvingoftheCoalition,their gamewastodishtheConservatives,andatthelastelections*theirobjectivewastopushRamsayMacdonaldfrombeingtheLeaderMtheKing's Opposition,tdsoretrievetheirlostplaceinSt.Stephen's.Theydidn't succeed,buttheyacceptedthealternativewhichexigencyofferedthem, andplayedthepoliticalgame-theydidthethingwhichtheToryPresscraredthemtodo---assistLabourtodethronetheGovernment.Well,the Governmentisnomore-LabouroccupiesitsplaceatthebehestoftheLiberals,andtheeyesoftheworld'sfinanciers-themoneylendersofEurope, thejugglerswithworldaffairs-willwatchwithblinkingeyesofsurprise,apprehensionandanticipationthenewmovementinBritishreform.

ThecompositionofBritain'sLabourGovernmentshouldsteadynerves thatwereonedgesinceitbecamepublicopinionthataLabourGovernment waspossible.RamsayMacdonaldhasgivenevidenceofhisstrongCaledoniancommonsenseintheselectionofhisteam.ThePressgenerallyhave accordedthenewGovernmentasalaam,anditsreceptionbasbeenvery favourable.Londonisnotdisturbed,andvestedinterestmaysleepunmolesoe' eels-v;s;onsofwill-eyedcut-throats.BankersandtheChamberofCommercehavepledgedthenelvesreadytoco-operatewiththe Government.andthatisthemostpromisingsignthattheLabourGovernmentisnotbeingmetbyignoblepar's'vindictiveness,butthatthesport-ee innsrr.tofthenationprevails.Mr.Macdonald'schieftroublesmaycome fr-se'b;.s.ownside-itwillberegrettableiftheydo.

GoingtoschoolinthecountrydistrictsofthisState,wherelungdistancesfrequentlyliebetweenthehomeandtheCatholicschool,isnotbyant' meansadelightfulexcursiontoourlittleCatholicboysandgirls,andparentswhodesirethattheirchildrenshallhavetheadvantagesofaChristian educationimpartedtothemmustfeelpityfortheminthewintermonths andthescorchingsummerclays,whenfacingtheirlungjourneys.Provision, weunderstand,hasbeenmadeinsomecentresbytheEducationDepartment fortheneedsofthelittlewaybackswhoattendtheStateschoolbyasubsidyfortheirconveyancetoandfromtheschool.Inatleastone ofthesecentrestheschool'busstopsnotfarawayfromtheConventschool, butthelittleAustralianCatholicwaybackisnotprivilegedtooccupyaseat inthesubsidised'bus.Representations,weareinformed,havebeenmade totheDepartmenttoextendtheprivilegetochildrenattendingthe Catholicschool,butwithouteffect.Ifthereisagrantofthisnaturemade forthereliefofchildrentravellinglongdistancestogeteducation,itseems toustobeexceedinglynarrowandmeanonthepartoftheDepartmentdistributingittodenyashareinittotheCatholicchild,becauseofapreferencefortheCatholicschool.Thereisalackofgenerosityinthematter, andasharp,uglydiscriminationwhiohisunworthyoftheMitchellGovernment.Justiceandfairplayseemstobeatfaultsomewhere.Slightlylee: thanafourthofthepopulation,theCatholicvoteatelectiontimeisnotdisregardedasanunwantedthingbythepoliticiansupportingtheGovernment programme.Onthecontrary,itiscourtedandangledfor,when,however, privelegesofthenaturereferredtoarebeingdistributed,theAustralianCatholicchild,whoistobetheadultofthefuture,isselfishlyignored.Ifsuch asubsidyasthatwhichwehavementionedexists,andweareassuredthat itdoesexist,theCatholictaxpayercontributestoit,andtheCatholicchild isentitledtoshareinitsbenefits.Againandagainithasbeenpointedout thatCatholics,forconsciencesake,havetoshoulderadoubleshareofthe burdenoftaxationforthemaintenanceofeducationthiscow-nes,reel asoftentheCatholicclaimthatataxohconscienceistheworstevidenceof intoleranceandpoliticalbigotryissetasideasunworthyofnotice.This penalisingofCatholicsbecausetheyopposethesecularisationofeducationbytheState,andputinthefirstplaceintheirinstructionalprogrammethe Christianconceptofeducation,isthemeanestsubterfugeofamajorityto defeatthewillofaminority.Itisthebrutaldominanceofthestrongover theweak.

Ifeducationisthesinequanonofanintelligentandenlightenedcitizenship,theCatholictaxpayer,believingthatreligionisafundamentalfactorintheeducationofhischildren,hasanequalclaimwithhisnon-Catholicneighbourinthedistributionoftaxationraisedforeducationalpurposes. Thatmuchisjustsimplejustice.ThePublicInstructionAct,itistrue,is thewillofthemajority,butthereisalsothewillofaminorityinthis countrywhichisentitledtoconsideration.TheCatholiccitizen,ifjustice %,eredonetohim,shouldhaveremittedtohimbytheStatethecontributionextortedfromhimforStateeducationinwhichforconsciencesakehe doesnotshare.ButtheStaterefusestorecognisethathehasajust claimtosuchremittance,andthoseconcessionswehavealreadyreferredto inconnectionwithStateschoolchildrenincertaindistricts,forwhichhe pays,arewithheldfromhimbecausethatmajoritywhichsustainsthePublic InstructionActhasdecreedthatheisarebelliousobjectorandhischildren arenotentitledtoshareinthem.Australia,whichboastsoffreedom,equality,andtoleration,issettingupaprivilegedclassofcitizens.Itisnouse mincingmatters,Catholicsarebeingregardedinthiscountryasaminority notentitledtofullcitizenrights.InthiscitythereareatleasttwoimportantbusinesshousesdoingconsiderablebusinesswiththeCatholiccommunitywhowillnothaveaCatholicintheiremploy.ItisuselessforCatholicstocomplainofinjusticebyprivatefirmsorbyGovernmentifthey remainidleandpassiveandtakenopartininfluencingpublicopinionby theirvoteatelections.Theballotboxisagreatreformer.Thisisamatterthatshouldbehighabovenarrow,shabbyandnarrowsectarianpolitics ---becauseitconcernstherightsofaminoritythathavegivenoftheirbest tothedefence,progressanddevlopmentofthiscountry.

Itisconcededthatminoritieshaverightsnotlesssacredthantherights ofmajorities;atleastitisfrequentlystatedbypoliticiansinthiscountry andintheOldCountrythatminoritieshaverightsthatmustincommon justicebesafeguarded.ItisaprincipleofInternationallaw.Lloyd Georgeenunciateditwhenhedeclaredthat"littlenationshavetheirrights thesameasbignations,elsewhydidGodmakelittlenations?"Butthere areselfishpeopleinthebulkofmajoritieswhothinkthatminoritiesmust sufferbecausetheyhappentobeminorities.Catholicsinthiscountryhave aburninggrievanceinthecontributioncompulsorilyextractedfromthem fortheupkeepofourStateschoolsystem.ToaddtothatgrievancebyimposingadditionaltaxationforprivilegestoStateeducatedchildrenthatare deniedtotheirs,isaddinginsulttoinjury.

InEnglandduringthelastgeneralelectionsCatholics,awakenedtothe realurgencyoforganisationtoprotecttheirinterests,framed,atthe directionoftheCardinalArchbishopofWestminster.threetestquestionsto besubmittedtocandidates.CatholicsinEnglandarewellorganisedonthe Educationquestion,andCatholicclaims,almostidenticalwithourown,are makingafavourableatmosphere.Catholicinfluenceisbecomingastrong factorinpublicaffairs,andthereseemstohealargerdesireinConservative England(fornotwithstandingtheupsetinBritishpoliticsto-dayEnglandie Conservative)tolistentotheCatholicclaimthaninthisallegedlydemocraticcountry.ThisquestionnaireonCatholiceducationalinterestsham 1,eenansweredintheaffirmativeverywidelybycandidatesofallparties. andtheattentiongiventoitshowsthestrengthandinfluenceoftheCa411. tholic,:ireinEngland.TheCatholicvoteisnolongerathingtobe trifledlvith,andagreatspiritoffairplavisbeingmanifested.

CatholicsinEnglandhavemanygrievancesincommonwiththeCatholicsthiscountry. - Likeustheypayratesandtaxesforpublicexpenditureuponeducationonexactlythesamebasisasothercitizens.Theyare compelledbylawtosendtheirchildrentoschool.Necessarilyandjustly theyclaim,asweclaim,thatCatholicschools,towhichalonetheycanconscientiouslysendtheirchildren,shallreceiveadequateassistancefrompublicfundsforeducationpurposes.ThereandhereCatholicsaskforequal treatment.WhattheymighthavegothadtheBaldwinGovernmentremainedinofficeisconjectural,butthenewGovernment,professingthe spiritandprinciplesofdemocracy,ifitistruetoitsideals,mustlendasympatheticeartotheCatholicclaims.Democracyinthiscountryhasyetto amendaStatutethathaspenalisedCatholicswiththeintentionofsmotheringtheprogressofthe-CatholicChurchinthiscountry.

Mr.EdwardMartynhasdiedathis residenceatTullyraCastle,Ardrahan, Co.Galway,aged64.Hehadbeenin failinghealthforsomemonths.He wasaninterestingfigureintheIrish literarymovement,andhisconsiderableprivatemeansweredevotedlarge- lytothefurtheranceofIrishliterature andtothestudyofPalestrinaand otherfamouscomposersofChurch music,forwhichhehadapassion.

Wearenotquarrellingwithsuch scientificfaith,foritismostreasonable.Thecauseofourcomplaintis thatmenwhobelievescientificfacts onhumanauthorityshoulddeemitunreasonableofustobelieveonexactly parallelandsimilargroundstheteachingsoffaithregardingtheSupreme Being,aworldbeyondthegrave,and thefinalrenderingteeachmanaccordingtohisworks.Philosophers,scientists.historianslivebyhumanfaith. Thematerialmandependingupon scienceforhisguidancemakesfaith thelawofhisnature.Theveryman whoboastsofacceptingnothingon lesshecanpersonallyproveittohis ownsatisfaction,whoformulatesthe falseprinciple,"IwouldliketobelievebutIcannot,"isedailygivingthe lietohispettheory.Mostofhis knowledgedependsnotonpersonalinvestigation.hutontheauthorityof others.Thepracticeofadmittingand actingupontheoriesiscommontoall scientistswhendealingwiththephysicalormaterialworld.Itisonlywhen suchapracticenecessitatesbeliefin aSupremeLaw-Giverandinafuture lifethattheyrefusetoapplytheirown well-recognisedprincipleandbeginto actinconsistently.Itisthefamous anti-ChristianHaeckelhimselfwho laysdownthefollowingsignificative rulefortheguidanceofhisfellowscieptists: "Accordingtothegeneralprinciple observedinallnaturalsciences,we mustacceptandretainfortheexplanationofphenomenaanytheory which,thoughithasonlyafeeblebasis,iscompatiblewiththeactualfacts. untilitisreplacedbyabetter.'The principleherelaiddownasanaxiom bysuchaviolentopponentofallreligionasHaeckelwemaysurelyemployinsupportofTheismwithoutexcitingsuspicionthatwearcapplying to-aninterestedsourceforourweapons ofdefence.Yetthe.applicationof thisveryprinciple,sosatisfactorilyapoliedmanydepartment*ofphysical research.aallthatisneededtocon

TheMeaningofFaith. Faith,takeninageneralway,is ourbeliefofanytruthfoundedonthe testimonyofothers.Thatthereare differentwaysbywhichwecancome totheknowledgeofatruth.Some thingscanonlybeknownbyexperience;thatis.bythetestimonyofour twoprincipalsensesoftouchandsight. Thisisgenerallythefirstsourceof ourknowledge,andaveryextensive one.Bythisweknowtheexistence ofallthingsaboutus,withalltheir sensiblequalitiesandproperties.Other thingstherearewhichcanonlybe knownbyreason;thatis,whenfrom knownprinciplesweargueanddraw conclusions,whichleadustotheknow. ledgeofnumberlesstruths,whichthe sensesalonecouldneverhaveacquired.Lastly.therearcotherthings whichcanneverbeknown,eitherby reasonorexperience.butbyonly hearingthetestimonyofthosewho knowthem;andthebeliefwehaveof suchthingsiscalledfaith.Bythis meansalonewecanacquiretheknowledgeofallpastmattersoffact,and ofsuchthingsthathappenatadistancefromus,andofallsuchthingsas donotfallundertheexaminationof oursenses.andareaboutthecomprehensionofhumanreason.Briefly stated,thepositionisthis:Whentruth comesthroughthesensesitiscalled experience;ifthereasonpresentsit, itiscalledscience;ifweusethefacultyofthesoulknownasintelligence, basingourstudiesontheknowledgeof experience,itiscalledfaith.AsPascalsowellexpressesit,therearethree ordersofgreatness-materialgreatness. intellectualgreatness,andmoralgreatness.Thefirstisperceivedbythe senses,thesecondbyreasonalone,and thethirdbythewholesoul.Now,it standstoreasonfromwhatIhavesaid thattherearetwomodesofbelief-thatwhichfallsunderthedailyobser vationofthesenses,andthatwhich isaboveandbeyondthemthatwhich dealswiththeseen,andthatwhich dealswiththeunseen:thatwhichdependsupinahumanmodeofapprehending.andthatwhichdependsupon somethingabovethefallibletestimony ofmen.Inotherwords,thereare twokindsofbelieforfaith--human faithanddivinefaith.humanfaith ispresentwhenweacceptastatement onauthoritywhichissurelyhuman, howsoeveritmayreachus.whetherby speeCh,bywriting,orbyanyother way;anddivinefaithisexercised whenweacceptthetruthsofreligion ortheauthorityofGodorhisChurch. Beforepassingonthesubjectofdivinefaith,itisimportant.nay,necessary,toshowandprovethattheexerciseoffaithrestsuponareasonable andslidfoundation.Thecertaintyof certitinkofshatwelearnfromthe testimonyofothersdependsuponthe authorityofthosewhogivethetestiMOM'titstis.uponthei:knowledge andveracity.

TheConditionsforFaith.

Twothinesarenecessarytomakeus certainofwhatwehearfromanother. Firstthathehenotmistakenhimself inwhatherelates,andthathespeak exactlyaccordingtotheknowledgehe hasofthematter.Whenwearepersnarledofthesetwothings,wecan havenoreasonabledoubtofthetruth ofwhatwehear;butifeitherofthese bewanting.wecanhavenocertain faithinsuchtestimony.Now,though intheordinarycourseoflife,thetes

vinceanunprejudicedandimpartial inquirerofthegreatfundamental truthsofreligion.Ifitisconsidered asufficientlystrongargumentyscientiststoacceptmeretheoriesasevidence,therecanleenoquarrelwith thosewhoacceptnottheories,but facts.inthesupernaturalorder,onthe authorityofaDivineTeacherandHis Successors.Thecommonobjection ofthemodernunbelieverthatheonly believeswhatcanbeclearlydemonstratedisaboutasreasonableasthe denialoftheexistenceofLourdestoday,orofCaptainCook130yearsago, simplybecausethesefactswerenot capableofscientificdemonstration. butrestedmerelyonOle-authorityof others.

AuthorityaSourceofBelief. Nosanemindreasonablyrejectsthe principleofhumane!idenceasacriterionoftruth.Noprogresswould bepossibleinanyscienceorartunlessamanstartedwiththedata gatheredbyhispredecessors.Historiansinthecompilationofhistorydo notreadalltheoriginaldocuments. Chemistsincompoundingdrugsdonot testeveryexperimentoftheirforbears.Lawyersdonotreadtheoriginaldocumentsofclassiccases.GeographersdonotvisiteveryCOUlaiyhi preparinganatlas.Physiciansbase theirdiagnosisofapatientonexperi mentalknowledge.Childrenaccept thedefinitionsofknowledgeonthe authorityoftheirteachers.Infact, weexercisehumanfaithinacountlessmultitudeofthingswithoutraisingtheleastobjection.Lifeistoo shortandfactstoomanytoallowof this.Andvetwefindmenrejecting theideaofauthorityinreligionand swallowingwithoutquestionthehumanfallible,hesitatingandchanging authorityofananti-Christiandogmatistorself-opinionatedscientist,andrefusingtoaccepttheauthorityofGod, speakinginandthroughadivine4yestablished,infallibleChurch.Isit not,then.unreasonable,tosaythe least?

FaithisReasonable. Faithisreasonableinitself,forwe havealreadystatedthatwearedaily acceptingtruthonthewordofman: therefore,itisnotunreasonablefor ustoaccepttruthontheWordofGod IfIbelievewhatameremantells me,surelyIcannotrefusetobelieve. whatAlmightyGodtellsme!IfI assentwithoutdifficultytothewonderfulstatementsofscientistsandastronomersandthedeclarationsofhistoriansaboutthingswhichIhave neverstudiedmyself,andofwhich Iknowabsolutelynothing,merelybe causethesecleverandlearnedmen makethem,howcanIhesitateabout assentingtotheteachingsofAlmighty God?

ThetragicdeathofMajorJack Campbellinamotoraccidentonthe Mogumber-road,nearBolgart,onSundayafternoonlast,wasreceiyedinthe citywithexpressionsofdeepsorrow forhissuddenanduntimelyend.The deceasedwasasonofColonelJ.A.
