ThedisclosurebytheArchbishopof Canterburyoftheconversationswhich havetakenplaceoveraperiodofthree yearsatMalinesonthesubjectofthe reunionoftheAnglicanandRoman communionsis(saysthe"Star")after altonlyaChristmascracker.Theconversationalistswerenotdelegatesor officialrepresentativesoftheirrespectivechurches,andtheyhadnopower tobindanybodyoneitherside.The proceedingsinwhichtheytookpart werenot"negotiations,"andnofurtherplansforcontinuingthemareprepared.TheVaticanhasalwaysbeen infavourofreuniononitsownterms. ThesubmissionoftheChurchofEnglandand,.herecognitionoftheprimacyofRomearetheonlytermswhich itwouldconsiderforaninstant.On theotherhand,theArchbishopofCanterbury-evenifhewere couldonlycarryaminorityofthe ChurchofEnglandwithhiminsuch asubmission.

TheBill,whichhasbeenapproved bytheCouncilofMinisters,would providethattheGovernment,incompensationfortheconfiscationof Churchproperty,guaranteepayment ofsalariestotheclergytotheequal equivalentin.valuetotherevenues fromtheconfiscatedproperty.

Thequestionisverycomplicated, duepartlytothefactthatitwould bedifficulttodeterminejustwhatpropertyinPolandproperlybelongsto theChurch.ItmustJberemembered thatmanyofthehistoricpossessions oftheChurchwereconfiscatedbythe PowersthatparticipatedinthepartitionofPoland.

Someofthesepossessionshavebeen returnedandsomehavenot.

Forinstance,thePrussianGovernmentconfiscated700,000hectaresof Churchlands.ofwhich115,000hectares arenowinthepossessionofthePolish Government. SimilarconditionsexistintheprovincesformerlyunderRussianrule.AltogetherthePolishGovernmentnow rps370,000hectaresofChurchlands. deonly200.000hectaresareactually inthepossessionofecclesiastical authorities.

Oppositioutotheproposedlawis basedonthecontentionthatitwould beundesirabletomakethepriests functionariesofthecivilgovernment drawinggovernmentpay.Alsothere canbenoaseprancethateventhese salarieswouldalwayshepaid.ASocialisticGovernmentmightrepudiate

thematanytime.Then,too,there istheexamplegiveninthecaseof thoseChurchpropertiesalreadyheld bytheGovernment.TheGovernment paystotheclergyonlyaverysmall partoftherevenuesderivedtherefrom, nothinglikethe"equivalent"amount whichisbeingofferedinthepending legislation.

CommunisminRussiahasmalethefortunesofmanyofitspromoters.

SometimeagoitwasrevealedthatLeninandTrotsky,KrassinandChit- cherin,hadamassedconsiderablefortunes.Howtheymadethemwasnot stated.Leninwasknowntobeaverywealthyman,aswasalsohisrival andcolleague,Trotsky.Bothstartedwiththeproverbial"nothing." LeninisreputedtohavediedworthfivemillionpoundsinEnglishmoney. Trotsky'sfortunehasyettobeputintofigures.Thatsecretheguards. Theothersarenotpermittedtobesoverycareful.Sothenewregimeis apparentlynobetterfortheRussianmassesthantheold.Therevolu- tionmerelybroughtdownonelotofgrabberstoenrichanother.No wonderthenewgentry,whocontrolforthewhilethedestiniesofRussia's millionsaremostanxious.whilstwillingtomakeconcessionsforrecogni- tionbyEngland,nottopermitanyinterferenceinRussia'sinternalaffairs. Whilsttheycangetthecommonherdtospinforthem,they'llnotbrook anyinterferencefromoutside.Butitisthetragiclessonofhistorythatthe wormwillturn.TheobjectiveofRussianCommunismistoobliteratefrom itsecetiliarorderofnationalismthefundamentalprinciplesofthemorallaw. IftheSovietGovernmentsucceedsinitsobjective.itcanbesureofhatch- int,nestsofviperswhichwillultimatelybringal,dutanotherrevolution whichwillshameandshockcivilisation.

Lenin'smillionsshowthatself-interestwasnoteliminatedfromhr personalphilosophy,thoughhispublicpronouncementsmadeforthepopu- larear,wereessentiallyCommunistic.Afterall.self-interestwaspartof thecreedofnearlyeverypoliticaladventurerthathasjumpedintopro- minenceandworkedhiswaytopower.LordBirkenheadsaysthatideal- ismisimpracticableinnationalaffairsandmighteasilybecomeasource ofnationalperil.PerhapsLeninandTrotsky.idealistsinthebeeinnineof theirCommunisticcareer.cametoasimilarconclusion.evenwhileLordBir- kenheadwaselaboratingprinciplesofInternationalLawandhrineinginto shapehisconclusionthat"themotiveofself-interestwas,must,and oughttobethemain-springofhumanconduct."So,too.havethought everyselfseekerwhohasbecomeprominentinpoliticsandtheStockEx- change.Thewrittenphrasestandsgood:"Wherethecarrionistherethe eeltureswillgather."

Inmodernmethodsofsocialandpoliticalwarfare,bothareused,butthe tongueisthemoredeadlyweapon.Inthefightforprohibition'therehas beenmoreabuse,slanderandvilifica.ir'nthansolidandconvincirgargu- ment.Theadvocatesofthisreformheldextremeviewsandtheywantto enforcethemuponthecommunitybyextrememeasures.Areform,ifitis tobeofprogressivebenefittothepeoeaemusthavethefullbackingofthe consentofthepeople.ProhibitioninAmericahasbegottenworseevilsthan theworstsaloonswerechargedwith.Anilwhy?Because,ifwemayjudge fromtheevidenceofcurrentopinoninthosecentreswhereprohibition hasnottheforceofpublicconsentbehindit,thelawisunabletoforceit doanthethroatsofthepeople.Ithasengenderedanexpensivesystemof espionage.graft,prevaricatior;,crim:anddrug-habitsthatareevenworse intheirincidencethantheopenliquortrafficinthebaddaysofthebusiness. Prohibitionisanextrememeasureadoptedbyextremistswhobelievethey can,byastatuteorstatutes.enforcemoralityuponthepeople.Whilst humannatureremainsasitis,itisnotpossibletoreformitbythebatonof thepolicemanorParliamentaryorciviclaws.Thatthereisurgentneed forreformoftheliquortrafficwebelieve,butsuchreformrillnotbe broughtaboutbyanydramaticenforementoflegislationupon'hepeople. Itcanhebroughtaboutbyareason'dsle,lustandcomprehensitaesystem ,ifinspection,bylimitationofthehaffic.theeliminationofundesirable houses.andabetterclassoftrading.MuchgoodhasalreadyBeenach,eved bylegislation--muchstillmayheacatmplishedbyreasonablemethods.hut eityallattempttoimposethewillofanextren.a.sectionofpublicopinion uponthecommunityisboundtoberesentedThereisawaotoreform, oftenithasbeendrenchedwithbloodandlatereiwithdeacimen,hutthe reformthatabidesisrootedintheconlentofanunassailablemajorityofthe people.

Advocatesofthepeculiarmentalityofourswift-tonguedandcaustic visitorwillnothelpforwar.1thatdiscreetandjustreformoftheLiquor TradewhichthewisdomofthemajorityofcitizensinthisStateandelse- whereinAustraliaaredesirousofmaking.Thatthereareunscrupulous personsintheTrade,whodonothesitatetoserveouLliquortoconsumers untiltheyarebeastlydrunken,shouldnotbeusedasanargumenttoas- persetheTradegenerally.ThereareintheTradeexcellentandreputable personswhoareendeavouringtocleanseitofthedirtyblotswhichunclean tradershaveintroducedbyperniciousandreprehensiblebusinessmethods. Mostpaganmissionswhenestablishedbutafewyearspossessacatechist ornativeteachers'school,thepurpose -ofwhichistotrainyoungmento teachChristianityandsecularknowledgetotheirfellowcountrymen.Most oftheAustralasianmissionshaveinstitutedCatechists'Schools,andthe VicariateApostolicofEasternNew -Guineaisparticularlyup-to-datein thisirspect.TheSocietyoftheDivineWord,whohavechargeofthismission,haverecentlymovedtheschool totheheadstationofSt.Michael,at Doilon.neartheAustralianGoyernmentstationatMadang,fromWewak, onthenorthcoast,totheeastofthe SepikRiverestuary.Forthepast fouryearsatWewaktheschoolhas labouredunderdifficulties,whichwill disappearsomewhatwhenmorecentrallysituatedatDoilon.FatherPaul Hesse,S.V.D.,isatpresentincharge oftheschool,andherecentlyreviewed itsactivitiesovertheperiodpriorto itstransference.Thenumberofpupils wasoverfifty,andcouldbedoubled withoutdangeroffoodshortage.They lack,however,asufficientteaching staff,especiallyteachingSisters.

Instructionisprovidedforthree classes.Theplanofstudyprovides forthefollowingsubjectsintheforenoon:Catechism,BibleHistory,reading,writing,arithmetic,domestic science,naturalhistory,_drawingand singing.Themediumofinstruction isthevernacularofthelocality,which isspokenbyeightythousandpersons. Afterverygreattrouble,asmallCatechism,aBible,andaprayer-bookwere printed.Whatisneedednowis printedprimers,readingbooks,and suchlike.Atypewriterwithinterchangeableletters,andamultiplicator, suchasaRoneo,Cyclostyle,orCompositionRol**couldbeusedwithgreat advantage.Onfreeafternoonsthe pupilsreceiveinstructioninscientific horticulture,themississehavingset asidealargegardenforthispurpose.Thepupilsfirsttilltheland,andthen sowitwithbananasandidigenous cropsandvegetables,suchasyams, taro,taromanioc,maize,andintroducedvegetablessochassweetpotatoes. Thesurplusissold,andtheproceeds settlesmanyalittleluxurybill-biscuits,fish,footballsandhandballs.

Gardeningisnottheonlytrade taught,forbeforeleavingWewaka roadwasbeingbuiltbyaconvenient pathoveramountainpeaktoconnect withthehinterland.Sincetimeimmemorialtheinhabitantsoftheinteriorhaveusedanaturalbutdifficult pathtoreachthecoastwhenseawater wasrequired,orwhentheywishedto trade,orperformtheirstatuarylabour fortheGovernment.Ifthepeopleof thevariousvillageshadbeenwillingto pooltheirlabourforafewweeks,they couldwithlittletrouble,have madethepathfiftypercent.moreconvient.TheKanakas,however,avoid everypossiblework,evenwhenit wouldinthelongrunbringthem mans.advantages.Sincemostofthe studentshavehadtousethispath whenreturninghomefortheirholidays,theywererequestedbyFather Hessewhethertheywouldnotliketo makethepathmoreeasy.towhich theyunanimouslyrepliedintheaffirmative.Eventhosewhohadnoper- sonalinterestinthepathwereanxious tohelp,andtheworkseemedless monotonousthangardening.Thescene oflabour,withitsfrequentdigressions, servedasapleasantchangeforthem. Then,too,theyweregivenpermission totakeagun,sothatonthewayto andfromworktheymightshootan occasionalcockatoo.rhinoceros,bird, orbrushturkey.Theywerealsoallowedtotaketwohuntingdogs,Nori andNelli.Itwasthereforealabour oflove,andtheirjoyknewnobounds. Sincetheheavyearth-workistoolaboriousforthestudent(theywereassignedthelightertasks.Inthedifficultplacestheypreparedonlythe preparatorywork,whiletheheavier taskswereturnedtotheirfathersand relatives,whofromthebeginninghave evincedagreatinterestintheundertaking,andofferedtheirassistance. Atsuitableplaceshandsomeshelters andrestingplaces,fullyequippedaccordingtonativeideas,wereerected. Recentlyapavilion-likehousewas erected,andthespaciousinteriordecoratedwithalargecrossandpicture oftheAngelGuardian.Ontheday PthatFatherHesseblessedthebuilding, herewardedeachoftheforty-nine workerswithalargezwieback,apipe ofgypsum.andsometobacco,sothat theyswereoverjoyedandreunitedto theroad-buildingwithfreshenthusiasm.

Theeducationofthecatechistslasts fiveyears.Sincetheyareadmitted sototheschoolintheirtwelfthyear,

theyalestilltooYoungforanimmediatepointmentatthesndoftheir schoolcourse.Theyhavenotyet acquiredthenecessarysobrietyand selfreliance.Consequentlyafurther opportunityisoeffredthemtolearn somehandicraftintheworksthatthe SocietyoftheDivineWo:dhasestablished.Afterthreeyearsintheworkshops,thosewhohave'remainedtrueto theircallingcanusuallybeassigned totheirprofessionaldutiss.Theyfirst hindthemselvesbyformalcontractfor threetofiveyears.Theirappoint rnententitlesthemtofreesupportand aninitialsalaryofaboattensh;llings. Thecatechistsusuallyhavetogiveinstructionstothechildreninthemorning,andespeciallytopreparethemfor theSacraments.In,theafternoon, whennototherwisesngaged,theygo totheneighbouringvillages,treatthe less!seriouswounds,visitthesick,preparethe,.seriouslyillfordeath,when itisimpossibleforthemissionary`to arriveintime.

Manyofthepupilspriertocontinue asartisansattheconclusionoftheir twourthreeyears'training.Thisis reallynomisfortune,sincetheartisans withagoodeducationareagreathelp tothemissions,often,indeed,aiding themissionunconsciously.Allthe paganlabourersintheemployofthe missionareinstructedtwiceaweekin thetruthsofChristianity;andinso 'faraspossible,theseinstructionsare attendedalsobyformerpupilsofthe schools.Wheneverthepaganlabourersfailtounderstandsetaepointsof theinstruction,theyprefertoturnto theoldpupilsforanexplanation.The oldpupilshavebeenrepeatedlyseen conductingapagankinsmantothe schoolonSunday,andthereexplainalloveragainbythepicturesandthecatechism,whathadbeenheardduringtheweekintheinstructions.

Eventhosepupilswhofinallyfeel nocallingtotheofficeofcatechists, andprefertoreturntotheirhome,usuallymaintaincloserelationswiththe mission.Whenthemissionarychances topassthroughthevillage,theyare quicklyonthespottogreetshim.They areoftenofdistinctassistanceto}lira onhislaboriousjourneys.andadvice himofbirths,deaths,casesofillness, andlikematters.Themissionary scarcelyeverfearsarefusalwhenhe asksanoldpupiltotakecareothe children,whileheinstructsanSuit, orwhenherequestsanoldpupilto accompanyhimonavisittotheneigh- bouringvillages. Thisdescriptionwillgivesomeidea oftheaimsofthecatechists'school, andtheactivitiesoftheFathersofthe SocietyoftheDivineWordinassistingintheconversionofAbepagan racesoftheCommonwealth.Father Hesseasksforpiousprayersthatthe schoolmayproducegoodandcapable catechists.

Slowlythewonderfulrealisation cametohim.Hewasfree!Theburdenhadbeentakenfromhim;amiraclehadhappened!Herewasamessagefromthegrave.Thesetumultuousthoughtsracedheadlongthrough hismind,thenonesteadilypiercing thoughtbecameuppermost..Hehad obtainedpeaceofmind,andFather O'Brienhadsaidhewoulaootainit.
