ARCHBISHOP COSTELLOE LAUNCHES NEW TEACHING RESOURCE FOR CATECHISTS

“OUR Christian faith, before it is about anything else, is about a relationship with the Lord,” said Archbishop Costelloe.

The Archbishop was speaking at the June 29 launch of the new Parish Religious Education Program, which took place at the Catholic Education Centre in Leederville.

“A personal relationship with the Lord but one that takes place within the community of faith,” the Archbishop continued.

The new Parish Religious Education Program has been developed by the CEWA Catechist Service in consultation with the Archbishop with the aim of assisting parish-based catechists deliver religious education in a contemporary and accessible way to their students.

The new program is entitled Gathered

in My Name, derived from the Gospel of Matthew 18: 20: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them”.

At the launch CEWA Catechist Service Team Leader Dr Pina Ford, explained the reasons for the name of the program.

“The name derives from the Gospels and is simple and suitable for primaryaged children,” Dr Ford said.

“It also reflects the coming together of God’s people in the Church, including the local church/parish community and the gathering of children in the catechetical classes,” she said.

Dr Ford also thanked CEWA Dr Tim McDonald and Director of Religious Education, Dr Debra Sayce for their support of catechetical work and the new resource.

The new program will be the mandated Parish Religious Education Program for the Archdiocese of Perth - replacing

the previous program, the Truth will set you free - as a teaching resource for Catechists.

“It is comprehensive, developmental and sequential and designed to be used in a parish setting with children from Pre-Primary to Year Six who attend nonCatholic schools,” Dr Ford added.

The year levels of Gathered in My Name consist of several modules, including Advent/Christmas, Baptism, Called to God, Confirmation (Year Five and Six), Church, Eucharist, Jesus and Easter, Mary, Penance and Reconciliation, Prayer and Word.

Dr Ford continued to explain that the program modules, each consisting of three lessons, are presented as individual booklets and collated into a boxed file.

AT FREMANTLE YOUTH SUMMIT

More than 130 student leaders joined the presenters and organisers of the Catholic School Youth Summit to celebrate the success of the inaugural event, which was hosted by Catholic Education Western Australia and the University of Notre Dame Australia.

More than 130 student leaders gathered recently for the inaugural Catholic School Youth Summit, hosted by Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) and the University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle campus.

The 24 June event continued the ‘Faith to Lead, Lead to Faith’ theme of the 2016 National Catholic Education Commission Conference (NCEC) held in Perth earlier in the week and brought together Years 10, 11 and 12 students from across the State.

Religious Education and Faith Formation Consultant at CEWA, Sandra Peterson, said the fact the NCEC Conference was being held in Perth prompted ideas for a similar event to be organised for students, which would help them develop skills such as leadership.

“It was really based around ‘Faith to Lead, Lead to Faith’,” she said. “These opportunities were being offered to the leaders of schools and teachers and we thought, ‘What are we doing for stu-

dents?’” The Catholic School Youth Summit started with the students gathering for breakfast and hearing from Perth Archbishop, Timothy Costelloe SDB; University of Notre Dame Vice Chancellor, Celia Hammond; and CEWA Executive Director, Tim McDonald.

Throughout the day’s concurrent sessions, students were challenged to think about ‘What’s in a name?’ by discussing purpose and identity.

There were opportunities to listen to stories of faith in action and explore strategies to uncover the essence of resilience.

M e l b o u r n e r a p p e r Fa b l i c e Manirakiza, aka FLYBZ, performed and spoke about his past as a refugee escaping violence in Burundi and how his story influenced his music and its message.

Fellow Burundian, Mireille (Mimi) Kayeye, a journalist with experience in social and community development work, shared her insights on being a young woman inf luencing positive change.

Students also worked with Paige Newmark, a Shakespearean teacher

and director, to explore ways to best use their physical voice and outward presence to express their inner voice powerfully and effectively.

Mrs Peterson said organisers were extremely happy with the turn-out for the event, which saw students travel from as far as Broome, the South West and Kalgoorlie to attend.

“The vibe on the day was very exciting. The students weren’t in school uniforms so they were very relaxed and there was a cross-mix of kids from around the State,” she said.

Meaningful sessions throughout the day encouraged a high level of engagement and openness from the students, she added, and they were excited to take what they learned back to their school communities and inspire others.

Mrs Peterson said her personal highlight from the event was the significant number of young people involved, both as presenters and participants.

Dominic Sandon from St Charles’ Seminary, and Sophie Stewart from Australia Young Christian Students, were the MCs for the day.

PERTH SEMINARIAN TELLS OF

MISSIONARY EXPERIENCE IN MALAYSIA PERTH SEMINARIAN Joseph Laundy has described how he swapped the familiar Mediterranean climate of his home town for the steamy jungles of Borneo during a recent pastoral assignment to Malaysia.

Mr Laundy spent three months in Bunan Gega, a small village in the region of Sarawak near the MalaysianIndonesian border, during his fourth year of studies at St Charles’ Seminary.

The experience, which he described as a privilege, undoubtedly had a great effect on him.

Mr Laundy recalled that one of the most important errands in the life of the parish was the Holy Communion circuit, during which he would accompany the priest to outstations and distribute Holy Communion to the elderly and infirm.

“It was literally missionon-wheels. On one particular day, the priest and I must have visited more than 50 houses,” he said.

“The vehicle to get around was a rusty, but trusty, fourwheel drive that probably had seen better days in the 1980s and it copped a lot on the rocky roads.”

While each visit was fairly straightforward and only lasted five to seven minutes, Mr Laundy said the day’s work could easily reach seven hours when travel time was included.

“Each visit, however, was a chance to witness the profound faith of the people.

receive the Bread of Life,” he said. “Many had nurtured the faith throughout their lives and, at this stage of their lives, were unable to make the journey to the parish Church on Sunday, which involved making a rough and long journey through the mountainous terrain.”

Mr Laundy explained that it was common for the extended family of the person receiving Holy Communion to gather around for the occasion, their heads bowed and hands joined in prayer.

They often prepared a simple altar, complete with burning candles, a small statue or a holy picture, he added.

“The faith present in the room was very moving. Here, present in the isolation of the jungle, the elderly couple were practising as living sacramental witnesses in front of their families and to the entire village,” he said.

While he was in Bunan Gega, Mr Laundy also learnt about the first missionary priest in the area, who arrived in the 1960s.

This priest was described as a saint due to his tireless work evangelising and celebrating the Sacraments, he said.

“On one occasion, to visit a sick parishioner, the

missionary priest had to climb across the mountainous terrain throughout the night to anoint and give viaticum,” he said.

Amoris Laetitia to have lasting legacy in lives of families and the Church

IT HAS BEEN more than three months since the release of Amoris Laetitia yet, in a sign of the document’s significance for the Church, it continues to make headlines.

Pope Francis published his Apostolic Exhortation on marriage and family life on 8 April this year, concluding a three-year process that included two Synods of Bishops in 2014 and 2015.

Translated in English as The Joy of Love, the Apostolic Exhortation comprises 264 pages, 325 paragraphs and almost 400 footnotes.

However, in the days after its release, the media predictably focused on one small aspect; namely, whether divorced and remarried Catholics would be permitted to receive Holy Communion (and, on this point, Pope Francis’ language has been left open to interpretation).

Only now, with the passing of time, is the Church beginning to comprehend the full scope of Amoris Laetitia.

Aust r ian Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, whom the Holy Father chose to present the document to the press, recently spoke about its historical importance in an interview with Italian Jesuit journal, La Civiltà Cattolica. ”AL is an act of the magisterium that makes the teaching of the Church present and relevant today,” he said.

“Just as we read the Council of Nicaea in the light of the Council of Constantinople,

and Vatican I in the light of Vatican II, so now we must read the previous statements of the magisterium about the family in the light of the contribution made by AL.” Cardinal Schönborn praised the document for its easily understandable language and its “profound openness” to accept the reality of marriage and family life today.

With this, he said, Pope Francis had “fundamentally renewed the discourse of the Church”.
