TH E SCIENTIST’S RETR EAT VETTER MOUNTAIN, CA

A research center for astronomists becomes an educational center for the general public. The building concept derives from the notion of multi-directional addition, using the building core to counteract the forces created by the cantilevered masses. The materials used for the retreat consists of steel I beams for structure, plaster for the central core, and a metal cladding rainscreen for the cantilevered moments. The circulation is separate for the public and private. The public circulatory route consists of an accessible ramp, which contains a sculptural rock garden in order to enhance the visual experience of the route onto the meeting space. The private access to the meeting space is through the residential tower and bridge. The retreat serves to create a unique mountaintop experience in the midst of the Angeles National Forest.

AN GE LES MUSEUM ON 4TH LOS ANGELES, CA

The Angeles Museum on 4th is located in the middle of urban Los Angeles. The building’s concept derives from the idea of branching.

The lobby of the museum is located at the center of the museum, while the gallery spaces are all spatially connected to the lobby to create a “separate but united” experience. The museum’s orthogonal geometry and universal use of concrete, results in its brutalistic style. Spatially, the museum contains single -height spaces for two dimensional artworks and double -height spaces for sculptures. In order to prevent museum fatigue, circulation of the museum allows visitors to experience not only artwork indoors, but also outside where a view of the financial district of Los Angeles can be seen.

The Angeles Museum on 4th features works from contemporary artists such as photographer Uta Barth and sculptor Kohei Nawa.

OBSER VATION CANTILEVER THE FOREST

Located in a forest environment, the Observation Cantilever serves as a lookout for nature. The angled geometry of the cantilever’s structure derives from the directionality of observation spaces inside the building. The cantilever consists of two facades performing a solid-void relationship: the wooden cladding which serves as an enclosure for the “Look In” and “Look Up” programs, and the metal mesh which creates a semi-open space for the “Look Down” program. The semi-openness of the “Look Down” space is to create an integrated interaction with the surrounding site.

A glass floor with the view of the sloped site is also included in order to emphasize a feeling of suspension as well as introduce a new perspective from above. Aside from providing a grand experience of “a break from the city”, the geometry and materiality also allows the cantilever to stay subtle in the natural environment.
