Even on formula, babies not getting enough vitamin D

400 international units. Health.com: The most important nutrient you’re not getting

By Denise Mann, Health.com March 22, 2010 6:19 p.m. EDT

T

he vast majority of infants in the U.S. are not getting the vitamin D that they need, even if they are fed vitamin-enriched formula, a new study has found. Roughly 9 out of 10 breast-fed babies receive less vitamin D than experts recommend, according to the study, which was conducted by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among formula-fed babies, fewer than 37 percent consume the recommended amount.

I

t is well-known that breast-fed infants are at risk for vitamin D deficiency. But the study findings suggest that most babies will require a supplement regardless of how they’re fed. “We have to educate moms and the health-care community that vitamin D supplementation is something that they should do [and] recommend,” says the lead author of the study, Cria Perrine, Ph.D., of the CDC’s division of nutrition, physical activity, and obesity.

“Most infants will require a vitamin D supplement to reach the new AAP recommendations, while in the past we only thought that breast-fed infants would need supplementation,” says Perrine. “Formulafed infants would need to consume a liter of formula a day to meet the new recommendations, and most infants don’t do that - especially those who are being fed with both formula and breast milk.”

N

ew mothers should discuss vitamin D supplements with their pediatricians, Perrine adds. (Although it takes just 10 to 15 minutes of sun exposure for the body to produce a day’s worth of vitamin D, the AAP discourages sun exposure for infants younger than 6 months, and advises the use of sunscreen after that.)

“Most infants will require a vitamin D

Health.com: Why you need vitamin D now

P

errine and her colleagues reviewed data from a national study that monitored what new ” mothers fed their babies between 2005 and 2007. The study, known as the Infant Feeding Practices Study II, included more than 1,500 infants ages 1 to 10.5 months who were fed only breast milk, only formula, or a combination of the two.

supplement

The study, published this week in the journal Pediatrics, comes amid growing awareness of the extent - and the health risks - of vitamin D deficiency in both children and adults. Known as the sunshine vitamin, because the human body produces it when exposed to sunlight, vitamin D is essential for healthy bones, a strong immune system, and a range of other bodily processes.

I

n children, too little vitamin D has been associated with bone softness and an increased risk of heart disease later in life, among other health problems. In 2008, the nation’s leading organization of pediatricians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, doubled its recommendation for the amount of vitamin D that infants and children should consume daily, from 200 to

By analyzing the infants’ diet and whether they were receiving a vitamin D supplement, the researchers estimated what percentage of infants met the then-current AAP guidelines of 200 IU of vitamin D per day, as well as what percentage would have met the new intake guidelines released in 2008.

V

ery few infants who consumed breast milk alone - between 5 percent and 13 percent - met the current or former recommendation for vitamin D intake. Among the formula-fed infants, 81 percent to 98 percent met the former recommendation, but just 20 percent to 37 percent of the

same infants would have met the current recommendation.

M

ost babies did not receive vitamin D supplements. No more than 13 percent of the breast-fed infants were given supplements, and fewer than 4 percent of the formula-fed babies received them. The results - especially concerning formulafed babies- are eye-opening, says Carrie Drazba, M.D., a pediatrician at Rush University Medical Center, in Chicago. “I don’t think a lot of us realized that formula-fed babies are not meeting their vitamin D requirements,” she says.

A

lthough the most obvious health problem associated with vitamin D deficiency in babies is rickets, or soft bones, pediatricians are increasingly mindful of respiratory infections and chronic diseases (such as type 1 diabetes) that have been linked to inadequate intake of the vitamin in that age group, Drazba says. A pair of studies published last year, for instance, found that children with low levels of vitamin D were more likely to have several risk factors that contribute to heart disease, including high blood pressure, high blood glucose, and low HDL (or good cholesterol). “We’re finding out that there are other risks associated with vitamin D deficiency besides rickets,” says Drazba. “A lot of cells in our body have receptors for vitamin D.”

H

ealth.com: America’s healthiest superfoods for women

A second study, also published in Pediatrics this week, provides a snapshot of vitamin D deficiency among infants and their mothers in Boston during the same time period, 2005 to 2007. Fifty-eight percent of newborns and 36 percent of mothers were vitamin D deficient, the study found; the deficiency was deemed “severe” in 38 percent and 23 percent of the babies and moms, respectively.

B

abies were less likely to be vitamin D deficient if their mothers took prenatal vitamins in their second and third trimesters, the study found. On the other hand, being born in the winter months increased the risk of vitamin D deficiency, as did being black. (Most of the individuals in the new study were black or Hispanic, and people with darker skin do not produce vitamin D as efficiently as lighter skin individuals when they are exposed to sunlight.) Health.com: Foods to boost your mood

T

he new studies underscore that vitamin D deficiency is an issue that mothers and doctors need to address from birth through childhood and beyond, Drazba says. “We’re realizing that with the combination of more women breast-feeding and how we slather kids with sunscreen and don’t let them run in the sun anymore, [kids] aren’t getting the vitamin D exposure that they used to, or that they need,” she says.

V

itamin D deficiency is a concern in adulthood as well. By some estimates, more than half of adults in the U.S. don’t get enough vitamin D from sunlight or from fortified foods such as milk, the other main source of the vitamin. And in recent years studies have linked vitamin D deficiency in adults to a long list of serious health conditions, including heart disease, certain cancers, osteoporosis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, depression, and some autoimmune disorders.

I

n response, the Institute of Medicine, an independent nonprofit organization that advises the U.S. government on health and medical matters, is now considering whether to raise its guidelines for vitamin D intake for adults and children of all ages. The institute is expected to announce its decision by the end of the summer.

Credit or debit? How to decide (MONEY MAGAZINE)

By Ismat Sarah Mangla April 27, 2010: 4:24 AM ET

T

he next time you reach for your wallet at the grocery store or the mall, chances are you’ll whip out a debit card rather than a credit card. Since 2000, the number of debit payments has more than doubled, while the number of credit transactions has fallen by nearly half, according to bank card advisory firm R.K. Hammer. Paying with cash -- which, after all, is what debit is a stand-in for -may seem like the smarter move. But it isn’t necessarily. There are a few situations in which credit serves you better.

“They’ll block $75 whether you’re filling up a moped or an SUV,” says Greg McBride of Bankrate.com. You can’t access the excess that’s frozen until the transaction is finalized, which can take up to 48 hours.

T

he stakes are higher when checking in at hotels and car-rental counters, which give themselves leeway for incidentals and damage. You could have hundreds or thousands frozen for days, which could trigger overdrafts or bounces on other payments. So secure a hotel or car with a credit card. (Bonus: Some cards also offer decent secondary auto insurance.) You can always make the final payment with debit.

You want big rewards “Debit rewards have gotten better over the years,” says Curtis Arnold ofCardRatings.com, “but still I’ve never seen a program that comes close to the best-of-breed credit card programs.”

As long as you routinely pay off the balance, choose credit if ...

You’re planning to make a major purchase “Credit cards offer the strongest protections on purchase disputes,” says Gerri Detweiler of Credit. com. If goods or services aren’t delivered as stated, the issuer will battle with the merchant on your behalf. Until the problem is resolved, the charge is suspended, and no interest accrues.

W

ith a debit card, however, the money is gone from your account and you have to wrestle the merchant to get your cash back. Your bank may help, but there’s no guarantee.

Thus, it’s worth using credit if you’re about to spend a hefty sum on something -- be it a TV or a home repair -- and especially if you’re making the purchase online, where what you see is not always what you get. Other reasons to use credit for big buys: You may get increased warranty protection and insurance against theft of the item. Use a Visa (V, Fortune 500) credit card, for example, and the manufacturer’s warranty may be extended up to a year. Check your card agreement to see what your card offers. You’re buying gas, checking in at a hotel, or renting a car When you use debit for those transactions, the merchant -- to avoid being caught short -- figures out the maximum you could spend, then puts a hold on your bank account for that amount. For example, when buying gas, you prepay your purchase. And since the gas station doesn’t know how many gallons you’ll use, it picks a big number.

Citibank’s debit cards, for example, offer one point for every $2 spent, and you need 8,000 points to get $50, so you’re earning a mere 0.31% on every dollar. In comparison, many credit cards offer at least 1% cash back. Bear in mind, too, that many debit cards offer their top benefits only when you sign for purchases rather than use your PIN, as banks get more money from retailers on signature transactions. (The Citi card gives one point for every $3 on PIN purchases.) And some merchants -- Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500), for example -- steer you toward the PIN option.

You don’t vigilantly monitor your account

L

egally, if your credit card or its number is stolen, your liability is minimal $50 max. With debit, the law can leave you on the hook for considerably more. Visa and MasterCard, however, extend the better protection to signature-based transactions on debit cards displaying their logos. So it’s pretty much a wash on liability. That said, credit still has a major advantage: If your debit card or its number is used, the money is gone, and you’ll have to jump through a few hoops to get it back. In the meantime you could bounce checks or miss bill payments. The more times you use your debit card, the more you’re potentially exposing its number to scammers. So if you don’t have the time or energy to review bank transactions a few times a month, use a credit card instead. That way, it’s the bank’s money that’s on the line, not yours.

Tin Lizzy’s By David Wolfe

I

don’t think I could love this place any more than I do! My favorite is the Steak Skillet with Salsa Fresca – absolutely delicious! Their chips and salsa are made perfectly and worth the wait on a busy day. If there was any downside to Tin Lizzy’s it would be the fact that it is typically a little loud and during peak times can have a crazy wait. However, the food quality is excellent, the staff is always super friendly (but sometimes a bit on the slow side) and the selection is by far superior to your typical Southwestern restaurant.

C

urrently Tin Lizzy’s has two locations – Buckhead, 3639 Piedmont Road and Grant Park, 415 Memorial Drive. Rumor has it there is a third location under plans in

the Midtown area.

T

heir menu offers chips and a variety of dips to, fresh salads and gourmet soft tacos. For those watching calories or carbs, Tin Lizzy’s entree salad with romaine and spring greens, roasted pumpkin seeds, corn, black beans and diced red peppers is sure to please. Their soft tacos are surely not to be missed. Try the Buffalo Chicken soft taco with blue cheese dressing

and crisp romaine, or the Fajita Steak soft taco with cilantro creme fraiche and grilled peppers and onions.

I

f you are looking for a fun atmosphere to watch the game or just hang out with friends, hit Tin Lizzy’s and you are sure to have a blast!

BIG DESIGN FOR SMALL SPACES by Marsha Ford

W

ith condos and apartments of less than 800 square feet, it can be a challenge to create open, comfortable homes in these limited spaces. Fortunately, small space does not mean few opportunities for decorating. A little ingenuity can make a small space look and feel larger, and perform more efficiently than a traditionally sized home.

A

ppearance is everything. Using furniture that seems almost invisible can give the facade of roominess in a small area. Glass tables, wrought iron chairs and airy baker racks bring functionality into a room without seeming to take up any space, since the eye is tricked into seeing through them. Use natural lighting wherever available and complement with artificial lighting. A combination of table, floor and ceiling lights can work together to create even lighting that appears natural to the eye.

M

ake efficient use of space. Allowing furniture to do double duty as storage bins keeps clutter from

occupying the room. Stacking wire racks for cupboards allows for more storage in tight spaces. Attaching storage shelves to the insides of cupboard doors cleverly utilizes otherwise useless space. And hanging mirrors strategically gives the impression of space and helps to illuminate a room further.

D

on’t be afraid to experiment. Once you begin using big ideas for designing your smaller space, you will be inspired to try more innovative ideas, such as toying with different colors, shapes and designs. Treat your space as an opportunity for creativity and efficiency — not a limitation.

MOVIE REVIEW  -  W3 LIFESTYLE  21

Law Abiding Citizen

remade or brought back to life. It faded out somewhat respectfully in the 80’s and simply did not need a revival in 2010.

By David Wolfe

Nightmare on Elm Street definitely lived up to its name – A Nightmare. The movie took classic lines and used them with no meaning or with the feeling which the originals succeeded in conveying. This was literally the most unneeded movie of the year and fell short of anything desirable. The most direct thing I’ve seen written about this movie is “This moody, lifeless movie rips off lines, scenes, dream sequences, and character kills from Craven’s film…while draining them of energy, suspense and meaning.” In other words – good luck staying awake…or perhaps that was their goal?

T

his was one of those movies that I wasn’t quite sure about when I first heard of its description. It sounded intriguing but also sounded like it could get a bit too testosterone filled with action to really follow a story line. I can definitely say that I was pleasantly surprised. Now I am a Gerard Butler fan, so I could watch him any day of the week in any movie and probably always retain a smile on my face. However, Gerard put on a fantastic performance in this movie and really kept me wondering what his next move was going to be. While some parts were definitely predictable, overall it kept me wanting to see how he was going to do it.

T

hen there was Jamie Fox and his fantastic performance as the assistant district attorney. Again, fantastically played and he did a great job of making us not begin seeing him as the bad guy but rather had me hoping he would learn his lesson and grow from the experience. All in all the casting for this movie was superb and everyone kept me absorbed in the movie and craving the deliciousness of the next scene.

L

aw Abiding Citizen is probably not a great “Date Movie” – but it also depends on your personalities. It definitely can conjure up some great conversation regarding ethics and the age old question “what would you do?” Anyone who says they have not swung back and forth on the issues which this movie exemplifies either hasn’t lived very long or isn’t being honest. Law Abiding Citizen taps into this guilty subconscious ambivalence with magnetic fury. This is a rental worth your time on a rainy night, even if it just to enjoy watching Gerard Butler.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) By David Wolfe

T

he odd thing is, I had no idea there was even a remake of this film being made. It wasn’t until it was released that I even knew about it. That should tell you how much even the studio believed in it. This was another example of a movie that absolutely did not need to be

A T

he crazy thing about it all is that the originals by Wes Craven were made on a low budget. As a matter of fact, their budget probably cost less than the catering bill budget for the 2010 version; yet, nothing new in this attempt to revive the spirit of one our generation’s scariest icons. Could they not have thought of something new?

I

had some great times with the originals back in the 80’s. Freddy was much scarier in 1984 than he now is in 2010. Many laughs came of Freddy back in the day and many scares as well. 2010 Freddy just did not do it for me and left me wishing for more…but rather got what I expected, a campy remake with no originality.

Shopping on a Fashion Budget By David Wolfe

I

t still surprises me the number of people that do not realize there is a Neiman Marcus Outlet store called Last Call which is located on Discover Mills mall. This is a fairly large Outlet store which has some fantastic products not only from the store itself, but also from a variety of the online shopping sources affiliated with Neiman Marcus. For example, not only do they have your typical fashion products, but they also have a large selection of furniture, lighting and home décor. I have found some fantastic cabinets for the same price as you would pay for a cabinet at Rooms To Go…which quality would you prefer in your home? It is definitely worth the drive when you are either looking for some new décor items for your home or if you are looking for a styling new outfit. Either way, shop on a budget and look to get a great deal.

G

uess who is now open in Buckhead??? Nordstrom Rack! Yes, Nordstrom Rack in Buckhead opened this week and I could not be happier. I am definitely a Nordie Boy and love the great buys that I have gotten at their Nordstrom Rack Buford location across from the Mall of Georgia. Living Intown though I didn’t love the drive to Mall of Georgia unless I was planning to have a serious shopping trip. However, now I have a great location just in Buckhead to stop by for lunch! The store is large and has a great selection. There is definitely an abundance of shoe’s and the same quality of designer clothes that I would expect to see at a Nordstrom Outlet store.

F

or those that have had to get a bit more budgeted like the rest of us, take advantage of these Outlet stores to shop on a budget, but still have the same quality of fashion sense that everyone brags on you about. They both even have some great Handbags, Sunglasses, Jewelry, Health and Beauty products, and so much more! They even have some fantastic kids items! Check them out online to find their exact locations and then enjoy shopping on a budget!
