HOW CUPID CAME ABOUT Cupid is the most famous of Valentine symbols and everybody knows that boy armed with bow and arrows, and piercing hearts. He is known as a mischievous, winged child. The arrows signify desires and emotions of love, and Cupid aims those arrows at gods and humans, causing them to fall deeply in love. Cupid has always played a role in the celebrations of love and lovers. In ancient Greece he was known as Eros, the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. To the Roman’s he was Cupid, and his mother was Venus. There is a very interesting story about Cupid and his mortal bride Psyche in Roman mythology. Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche, and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal she was forbidden to look at him. Psyche was happy until her sisters persuaded her to look at Cupid. As soon as Psyche looked at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving her. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished too. Psyche found herself alone in an open field with no signs of other beings or Cupid. As she wandered trying to find her love, she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and more dangerous then the last. For her last task Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld. She was told to get some of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto, and put it in the box. During her trip she was given tips on avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead. She was also warned not to open the box. But Temptation overcame Psyche and she opened the box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber. Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the deadly sleep from her body and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did Venus. The gods, moved by Psyche’s love for Cupid, made her a goddess. Today, Cupid and his arrows have become the most popular of love signs, and love is most frequently depicted by two hearts pierced by an arrow, Cupid’s arrow.

INCREASING GAS BILLS

FRIENDS AS NEIGHBORS

GOING OUT OF BUSINESS

For the next couple of months, everyone will be affected by the high gas bills due to the winter weather that we’ve experinced. Arbor Hills would like to provide you with some Energy-Saving Tips.

A great way to enhance your living experience as a resident is to surround yourself with your friends. Let your favorite co workers know that you can cut cost by carpooling to work if you lived in the same great community. Who wouldn’t want to live in the heart of Atlanta and be minutes from Downtown, Atlantic Station, Lenox Square Mall and Phipps Plaza? They can have the best of both worlds; the excitement and convenience of the big city as well as the quiet seclusion of our beautiful wooded acreage. You can get a resident referral off your rent just by referring the people you know to your community if they move in during the month of February. The process is simple: when they apply they must put on their application that you referred them, once they have been approved and have lived here 30 days you get your referral fee!

Have you noticed all of the businesses going OUT of business? What is even worse about that is the fact that MANY times it did not have to happen.

Heat Tips- You can do simple things at home to help lower your energy bills. Set your thermostat at 65-68 F during the winter while you’re home during lower it at night or while you’re away to 55-58F. Seniors and individuals with problems may require a warmer setting. Use a humidifer in colder months. When air is moist, you’ll feel warmer and your thermostat lower. In winter, open window treatments to let in the sun’s warmth during the day, close window treatments at night to slow the loss of heat through the glass.

If a company isn’t marketing and thinking outside of the box with its customer relations and exposure, then perhaps it is unavoidable. It starts with exposure, get people talking about the services or products you offer. After all, if they do not know about you, then how do they know about you? Seems crazy simple doesn’t it? MOVIE REVIEW - AVATAR

RESTAURANT REVIEW

GOOD OR BAD?

SIP RESTAURANT

James Cameron’s Avatar is receiving a lot of mixed publicity lately. Everyone has an Avatar opinion or review, and everybody seems to have varying opinions. There are many people that are captivated by the story and by the director’s earth shattering special effects. On the other hand there are many critics that think that the story line isn’t as strong as it could be.

Sip Wine Tasting & Tapas Restaurant in Crabapple provides the perfect solution for those who know they want something delicious and satisfying but can’t decide on just one thing.

The story of Avatar has been compared to that of “Pocahontas,” just as the story of “Titanic” has been likened to “Romeo and Juliet.” Some also contend that there are themes of racism and political indoctrination woven into the tapestry that is Avatar. So which is it? Is it an extraordinary movie, or is it a big joke? As with many things, it all depends on what you plan on taking from the movie. If you are looking for a good story, there is some indication that you may be disappointed. If you are looking to be transported in to another world, it appears if you will be very, very pleased.

They had me at “Welcome to SIP”! I walked in to smiling faces and a very warm greeting by their casual yet professional staff. It was cool to be taken on a tour of their retail and dining sides of the restaurant. The place has 200 different bottles of wine to compliment the 50 they have on the menu (more on that in a minute). The highlight of the tour has got to be their übercool wine dispensing machine! You will love the open dining area. I was able to choose from a “sip”, half glass, full glass or bottle of wine. How perfect?!? Cornmeal Crusted Oysters with baby spinach in a bacon Vidalia vinaigrette, Pistachio crusted Scallops, Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Shrimp with peach chipotle BBQ sauce and so many more creations were prepared perfectly. Even the “fries” were amazing. Bottom line - GO NOW!

ATLANTA HAPPENINGS FREE WINE TASTING - You certainly can’t say the best wine is free wine. You cannot, however, deny that free wine of any kind is a good deal. WineStyles Perimeter has free wine tastings on Tuesday nights. Taste of any of six open bottles of wine for no charge. The tasting is from 6-8 p.m. Try something new and exotic or enjoy the familiar. www. winestyles.net SAVE MONEY TO SEE MAMMA MIA - This isn’t a significant savings, but every little bit helps. Using promo code “Dress” when purchasing your tickets to see the musical, “Mamma Mia” at the Fox Theatre, you save $5 per ticket. That amount will be matched and donated to Dress for Success. The musical plays at the Fox Feb. 9-14, and the discounted ticket is available for select performances. Remember you can also save $10 on tickets to shows on Feb. 9 and 10, and Feb. 14, through Travelzoo.com. SPA DEALS - In Atlanta there is no reason to ever pay full price for a massage or spa treatment. There are simply too many deals that slash prices in half — or more. Take this one on Groupon.com, for instance. For $55 — $70 off the regular price — you can get one of six spa treatments at Renewed Image. There is also a bonus side deal that you can check out on the site. There are always great deals to be had for you there. Here at W3 Lifestyle we are always watching for the new offers and best deals to pass on to you. Take our advertisers for example, be sure to check them out and the offers they have for you! Always mention to them that you saw them in our publication and look forward to great service and deals!
