ARBOR HILLS Bedroom.... Chaos or Oasis?? If your bedroom is more like a catastrophe than oasis, it may be time to wake up and take on the chaos. Designers and sleep experts agree that your bedroom should be a peaceful refuge, a restful retreat that creates an atmosphere conducive to sleep and relaxation. Below are some tips to turn your den of chaos into an oasis of bliss. 1. Cut the clutter. - When you walk into your bedroom are you visually overwhelmed? Whether you have too much decoration on the walls and nick nacks on top of the dresser, or mounds of dirty laundry on the floor, the visual impact can be the same. The more stuff you have in the room, the smaller and more confining the room will appear. Do whatever you have to do to organize and store items out of sight. Provided, feng shui experts warn, that you don’t stuff the debris under the bed. It’s thought that items stored under the bed can disrupt the natural energy flow and ultimately affect your rest. 3. Keep the room purposeful. - Our homes have become as crowded as our lives and often our bedrooms do double duty as our home offices. But design and sleep experts agree that you should get the office and computer out of the bedroom if at all possible. A desk and computer detract from the room’s ultimate purpose - to serve as a refuge from the day’s cares. If you simply have nowhere else to put your computer, try to position it so that it’s not the last thing you see before you close your eyes or the first thing you see in the morning. 4. Decoration should be simple but dear to your heart. - The bedroom is no place to try out the latest edgy design trend. Stick with colors, textures and images that are meaningful and relaxing to you. A dramatic centerpiece is OK as long as it inspires a sense of peace. Your focal point could be a massive, four-poster king sized bed or a wall mural of a sensual tropical scene or restful garden. 5. When it comes to bed linens, splurge away! - Your skin will be in contact with your linens for six to eight hours every night. You’ll see your bedspread or comforter every time you pass by the bedroom door. Your linens should appeal to your sense of touch as well as vision. You should fall in love with how the linens feel against your skin, as well as how they look on your bed. Good linens can make even the most simple bedroom décor feel stunning.

W3 Lifestyle – Tell Your Friends!

Y

ou are living in what has been determined to be a W3 Lifestyle community. To hold the W3 Lifestyle designation means that an apartment community has committed to being the absolute Best of The Best through Superior Resident Services and Superior Product Quality. Only apartment communities that are willing to sign for this commitment and truly be concentrated on their resident’s well being as well as working towards improving their lifestyle are able to hold this esteemed designation.

“Only the Best of The Best are invited to hold our designation.” Never before has there been such a designation that will allow apartment seekers to find quality communities that care so much about their residents. No more blindly searching through publications or going to apartment locators that send you to communities that are paying them for their referral. Tell your friends that when they need to find an apartment there is only one important criteria now to really pay attention to that

really means something – is it a W3 Lifestyle rated community? Only the Best of The Best are invited to hold our designation, and only the Best of The Best are willing to commit to our

required standards. We require our W3 Lifestyle designated communities to uphold certain standards and to offer services such as monthly resident events and a quality communication tool such as the customized W3 Minizine you are reading right now. Tell your friends who are looking for an apartment to be your neighbors at your community and enjoy the great benefits you will be receiving, or to go to w3lifestyle.com to find a W3 Lifestyle apartment community in their area. Because if they are a W3 Lifestyle community – The Care! If they are NOT a W3 Lifestyle community, turn and walk away – they either were not even invited to hold our designation or they simply could not commit to our standards of being the absolutely Best of The Best!

your legs, palms up. Hold for 10 seconds. This will help relax your neck, lower back and hips. Deep breathing is very important for your entire body to relax. Slowly get up. Next, sit on the edge of your bed. Lower your chin to your chest. Push your head forward and your shoulders back as though you are a turtle. Hold this position for 3 to 5 seconds, and repeat three more times. Now relax your back. Lie on your back and bring your knees up to your chest. Grab your knees just below your kneecaps, and gently turn them to the left five to ten times. Then repeat this bringing your knees to the right five to ten times. This should stretch your lower back. And feel very good.

Trouble Sleeping? Here’s a Quick Cure By: Phyllis Wasserman

W

hen you go to bed every night, do you toss and turn? Well here’s a way to fall asleep fast.

Lay flat on your back and place your arms out with the palms up. Bend your knees and put your feet flat on the floor or bed. Inhale slowly and deeply. As you exhale, slowly drop your knees to the right and turn your head to the left (at the same time). Breathe deeply again, five times. Inhale and return your head and knees to the center and exhale as you lower your legs to the other side. Do this three more times.

“Sleep is very important to our physical well-being.”

Many of your problems are from stress. Tension builds up all day long and it can rarely just go away at bedtime. People require peace of mind at bedtime. Or else you can’t fall asleep. Sleep is very important to our physical wellbeing. But if your mind won’t allow your body to fall asleep, we cannot be at peace. If you have too many problems, it’s hard to overcome this cycle. The solution can be a simple, quick, 10 minute before bed routine. You should do this in your bedroom, either on the bed or floor.

Relax and close your eyes. Try to relax all the muscles in your body. Start at the top and work your way down to your toes. This should ease some of the days tensions. Now get under the blanket. The room should not be too cold (68 to 70 degrees) or too hot (not over 76 degrees). Lie on your back and breathe slowly. Do this four more times and you should start to feel drowsy. A calm, easy, peaceful, feeling should wash over you in about 5 minutes.

The less you worry about not being able to sleep the better. Since you are probably tense, it is important to relax. Most people Less worry, more sleep. Think peaceful thoughts. Let the feel the tension in their neck, lower back and sometimes in your days worries slip away, like bubbles. As they pop, so does upper back between your shoulders. So relaxing the spine is the tension and stress of the day. If you train yourself to the first step to a calmer you. Here is a yoga pose that may help. relax, and think soothing thoughts, sleep should come. Kneel near or on your bed, and sit back with your rear on top Listening to quiet music can also help. Endorphins are of your hands. Bend forward until your chest is resting on your released that cause you to relax. Just remember to not think thighs and your forehead is touching the bed or floor with your of anything negative. Practice this routine over and over chin tucked under. Relax your arms on the bed or floor beside again. Soon your sleep will come quickly and naturally.

Who, Not What, Is Holding You Back? By Shari Bench

W

ho’s holding you back? You probably spend time thinking about what you want in life, but how often do you consider why you have yet to achieve what you want? Maybe you desire a raise or a promotion. What is your barrier? Maybe your company isn’t providing opportunities for growth. Maybe your boss has yet to realize your value, your co-workers are a problem or your employees don’t work hard enough. It’s time to realize that most of your barriers are created by you. Here are the 10 steps in eliminating the things in life that hold you back. 1) Examine your Thoughts: How you think about yourself and your opportunities are in direct alignment with your results. Believe in yourself and your ability to create the results you want to achieve. Sometimes your thoughts are ingrained so deeply you are not even aware of how negative they may be. Make a conscious effort to replay your thoughts during the day. Recognize negative thoughts, discard them then replace them with positive and encouraging thoughts. Continue this process until you have retrained your thoughts to be naturally be positive and encouraging

that it’s ok to be where you are. Be aware of justifications that take you out of the game: “It’s too hard, it will take to long, I’m not smart enough, People just don’t understand, Change is not safe, The economy is so bad I should be grateful for what I have, I’ll start tomorrow”. The reality is dealing with justifications will feel as if you are arguing with yourself. Your head wants you to stay safe and will sound intelligent as it tries to keep you from making progress. 5) Eliminate the blame game: Until you are willing to take full responsibility for your results, blame will seem appropriate. While blaming, you become a victim and changing your results will become impossible. Why? Because if you are blaming others you are telling yourself you have had no say in where you have ended up in life and it is someone else’s responsibility to change your results. Eliminating blame releases a shadow over your thoughts, and you begin to see the accountability you have had all along and the opportunities that are all around you. 6) Self-reliance: Create a healthy reliance on yourself to succeed. Although you want to

4) Eliminate Self-Justifications: If you want to make progress you must stop justifying

8) Lack of education and knowledge: It has been said the only thing standing between where you are and where you want to be is learning something different. Education is a valuable tool and should be considered as such for the rest of your life. Don’t let your education discontinue once you have finished school. As you evaluate each of your goals, identify the education you will need to achieve the results you expect. 9) Fear of pain or failure: Fear has to be one of the most powerful emotions you’re facing. This can create significant momentum for change or shut you down all together, preventing any progress from occurring. How fear effects each person is going to be very different. Your fear will expand and possibly elevate and intensify to a level much greater than it actually is upon experiencing it. Keep in mind The degree of your fear will be relevant to the change you are experiencing. 10) Relationships: The reality is you will live up to or down to the standards of those with which you spend most of your time. It is in these personal and professional relationships you have found comfort. Evaluate these relationships and begin to reduce negative influences. Although listed as a final step, this is one of the most important places to begin. Through your habits, beliefs and actions, you have strategically aligned with people who influence your outcome. Ensure you are continuously looking at the relationship alignments you have created within your life.

2) Clarity: Lack of clarity can weaken your progress. If you know you want to do something different but have not brought clarity to the results you are trying to achieve, you are stifling your progress. Invest time in yourself and your future by allocating time to contemplate the results you wish to achieve. If you have become frustrated and confused about what you really want, this is where you begin. Each day create an environment (meditate, take a walk, relax) where you can clear your mind and place yourself into your professional future. 3) Habits and Choices: Your habits lead to the choices you make (consciously or subconsciously) which bring the results you currently have today. If you want to change your results you must change your habits and choices. Once you have examined your thoughts and created clarity on your future, you must bring your habits and choices into awareness.

accountability built into your progress. Without accountability, it’s easier for justification to start derailing you which can prolong your ability to meet goals.

realize the responsibility you have over your own results, you also want to avoid having an attitude of having to do it all. As you determine what your goals are, begin to consider what you need and who can help you achieve each of your goals. 7) Lack of accountability: Taking responsibility and accountability go hand in hand. As you begin to create clarity around your desired results, it’s important to have

This article began by asking “who’s holding you back?” then continued explaining that by blaming others you become a victim and lose control over your own destiny. By reading this article, you have already created an awareness of barriers that may be present in your life. Continue to recognize that if something or someone is perceived to be holding you back that you have the absolute power to remove these barriers.

Finding the Upside in the Economic Downturn By Theresa Rose

Y

ep, it’s really bad out there. It seems like not a day goes by without another story of doom and gloom hitting the airwaves or whispered around the water cooler. We are living in the most challenging time in recent memory: people across the country are losing their health insurance, jobs, homes, and retirement savings. The negative effect of the current circumstances in which we live – both on a financial and an emotional level – cannot be underestimated. However, constantly reminding ourselves of how uncertain our future is does a great disservice to our professional lives as well as wreaks havoc on our attitudes, relationships and health. Despite the bleak forecasts, all is not lost. In fact, contrary to conventional wisdom, the financial crisis may actually contain several profound benefits buried beneath the bad news. If you want to survive the economic maelstrom with your job, relationships and health intact, consider acknowledging the potential gifts the downturn has provided:

Clarifying priorities. There’s no

doubt about it; the wake-up call has been made. We have been forced to reevaluate what truly matters. What is really important to you right now? Is it the big house filled with big stuff or the precious people in your life? Is it the numbers on the 401(k) account statement or your blood pressure numbers? Is the Monthly TPS Report really worth fretting over? By realizing that our health and family are far more important than anything else, we are able to separate distractions from necessity. What good is obsessing over our jobs if the price we are paying is our well-being and relationships?

Making better choices. Our tighter wallets are forcing

us to consume less and conserve more. Recycling and reusing are becoming more than popular catchphrases; they have become an integral part of our everyday lives. We are driving less in order to save on gas, eating last night’s leftovers for lunch instead of going out to eat, and being more conscious of what we throw away. Whether it is an overhaul of all business expenditures or simply refilling the printer toner instead of buying a new one, this unintended shift of consciousness is not only benefiting our financial future but also the health and sustainability of the Earth.

Staying put. Many people are enjoying “staycations” as

opposed to vacations, opting to spend quality recreational time at home or nearby. Investigate the local attractions you and your family can check out on the cheap. Is there a state park you have heard about but haven’t yet visited?

Maybe the local high school or college is putting on a theatre production that you and your spouse would enjoy. Embracing the pearls found within our local communities is giving our pocketbooks a much-needed rest and reminds us that we don’t have to escape our current environment to have fun.

Feeling more interconnected. Everyone is feeling the

pain of our national crisis; there is no longer a nameless, faceless “other” who is affected. Not unlike the unheralded unity created after 9/11, the national rocky road we are all traveling upon is helping to create a deeper camaraderie. We have moved away from the “me, me, me” mentality toward a “me too” one. By experiencing this journey together, we are more compassionate toward our fellow Americans than ever before.

Getting better. This is the perfect time to build upon

your skill set. What technical skills can you brush up on to solidify your organizational value or make yourself more marketable? How about dusting off your favorite hobby and turning it into an additional income source? There is a multitude of hidden opportunities for growth and prosperity if we open ourselves to it.

Expressing gratitude. No matter how bad the situation, we can always find things to appreciate in our lives. Ask yourself the following questions: Do you have a job? Do you have a home? Do you have people who love you? Are you healthy? Sometimes we need major difficulties to remind us of how rich we truly are. It doesn’t take very much effort to find someone who has it worse than you. Now is the ideal time to be grateful for the countless blessings. This moment offers us a chance to move into uncharted territory instead of shrinking into the collective fear. Now is the time to discover the best of who we are, not allow the worst of ourselves to appear. When we shift our inner focus from depression to appreciation, everything around us begins to change as well. We no longer get trapped in our own misery. Our family and friends become our strongest allies. Our employers see us as part of the solution instead of another problem to manage. Our outlook becomes hopeful instead of hopeless. We position ourselves at the forefront of the recovery effort. Most importantly, we realize that we are responsible for our own happiness, not the latest economic report or a sound byte from a cable news show. Remember: this too shall pass. How do you want to experience this critical juncture? Do you want to be full

of fear or full of joy?

Tin Lizzy’s By David Wolfe

I

don’t think I could love this place any more than I do! My favorite is the Steak Skillet with Salsa Fresca – absolutely delicious! Their chips and salsa are made perfectly and worth the wait on a busy day. If there was any downside to Tin Lizzy’s it would be the fact that it is typically a little loud and during peak times can have a crazy wait. However, the food quality is excellent, the staff is always super friendly (but sometimes a bit on the slow side) and the selection is by far superior to your typical Southwestern restaurant.

C

urrently Tin Lizzy’s has two locations – Buckhead, 3639 Piedmont Road and Grant Park, 415 Memorial Drive. Rumor has it there is a third location under plans in

the Midtown area.

T

heir menu offers chips and a variety of dips to, fresh salads and gourmet soft tacos. For those watching calories or carbs, Tin Lizzy’s entree salad with romaine and spring greens, roasted pumpkin seeds, corn, black beans and diced red peppers is sure to please. Their soft tacos are surely not to be missed. Try the Buffalo Chicken soft taco with blue cheese dressing

and crisp romaine, or the Fajita Steak soft taco with cilantro creme fraiche and grilled peppers and onions.

I

f you are looking for a fun atmosphere to watch the game or just hang out with friends, hit Tin Lizzy’s and you are sure to have a blast!

iPad – Friend or Foe Partial Article Content written by Brennon Slattery – PC World

Now that the mania of Apple’s iPad (such a bad name) announcement has begun to calm and people are checking bank accounts instead of RSS feeds for more information, big-name critics are pulling out their swords and taking swings at Apple’s latest creation. The overall reaction has been, in a word, underwhelming. What was hotly anticipated has mostly turned into cold soup. So what happened and what is being said? There is, without a doubt, much disappointment surrounding the iPad. Bloggers curb-stomped it for its shortcomings: * No multitasking * No Adobe Flash (yet) * No camera or iChat capabilities * No HDMI port * 4:3 aspect ratio * Still dependent on AT&T’s 3G service * Dependence on adapters ... and the list goes on. The round-up of other influential tech blogs brought the same lukewarm response I believe we should expect from what looks to be a wishy-washy on-the-fence device. Gizmodo, quite simply, hated it. In a very long, multiperson take, Engadget was kinda “meh.” ZDNet, like many, urged caution. And the editors here at PC World teetered toward the negative in multiple editorial takes. So that’s the general take on Apple’s latest product. What’s even more appealing to me is getting the audience’s reaction. So what do you think about the iPad?

MOVIE REVIEW  -  W3 LIFESTYLE  21

Why Did I Get Married Too? By David Wolfe

I

n reading about an interview with director Tyler Perry about his film I Can Do Bad All By Myself, Perry was asked why all his films have almost irredeemable bad guys. “Part of it may be my own personal thing, in dealing with the years and years and years of my father being this person as dark and evil as he was to me,” he said. “ Maybe I’m waiting for him to change so I can see some other people be redeemed. I don’t know.” Since Perry keeps his personal life fairly under wraps, it’s hard to say whether his father has changed, but with Perry’s movies it is obvious that he has learned from his own life experiences. In Why Did I Get Married Too?, there isn’t the typical Perry villain. Alternatively, it seems there are characters that are much more reflective of real life; flawed people making mistakes…sometimes terrible, life-changing mistakes. I know many people who’ve gotten divorced, as perhaps you do, people who said their relationships weren’t worth the trouble anymore. Sometimes those splits were amicable. Many times they were bitter. A few involved a real villain —someone who was violent, abusive, deceptive, mean. But far more often, the relationships simply eroded over time. Somewhere along the line, something when wrong. Couples stopped talking, stopped listening, or both. Perry’s movies, like marriage itself, are always filled with the “better” and “worse.” Married Too is filled with crass language, sexual situations and some scenes that made me want to look away. But in the midst of it all, he also tells us that marriages are worth fighting for, no matter how far gone things seem. And so we should fight to see our unions through their own periods of better and worse, of sickness and health, of highs and lows. In short, we should embrace every precious minute. Because with careful attention and regular maintenance, Why Did I Get Married Too? insists, a good marriage can run for a very long time.

Sherlock Holmes - 2009 By David Wolfe

I so badly wanted to like this movie – I really did. I was so excited to see the dynamic between Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. However, sadly I must say – thumbs down – both thumbs as a matter of fact. I’m not sure where Guy Ritchie was going with this movie or where his mind was at the time. It is almost as if he was trying to turn the Sherlock Holmes story into a 007 Bond movie – it simply did not work well. What appeals to the Sherlock Holmes story is that the storied detective is not and never has been an action hero. Not that he is averse to a bit of rough-andtumble in the name of self-defense, but Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories are singularly devoted to his creation’s remarkable deductive skills, and not his ability to outfight giants or outrun fireballs.

E

lementary Dear Reader: This was s terrible attempt to transform a great story and character into a franchise, a character that can be relied on for years to come to generate huge box office returns. Unfortunately, had they kept the core values of the character in place, this might have actually happened. But as Ritchie typically does with his movies, it went over the top and lost its true soul and meaning.
