EXPLORING AI’S ECONOMIC IMPACT

Bahrain’s tech sector is set to gather for the thirteenth MEET ICT 2025 and BITEX exhibition this November

Bahrain’s technology community will convene in late November for a dialogue on AI’s economic impact and the latest in global digital transformation. The thirteenth MEET ICT Conference, running alongside the BITEX exhibition from 25 to 27 November at the Gulf Hotel, reflects a sector dealing with rapid change and searching for practical

applications of artificial intelligence. This year’s conference and exhibition will be held under the theme “Innovation, Transform, Elevate: AI For the New Economy”, highlighting the pivotal role of artificial intelligence in redefining industries, accelerating digital transformation, and supporting economic diversification across Bahrain and the wider region.

Spanning three days, the events

will open with a two-day conference program featuring high-level discussions led by prominent experts, specialists, and key decision-makers from the ICT sector.

These sessions will delve into pressing themes such as the implementation of AI in business ecosystems, the future of smart economies, and the transformation of public and private services through emerging technologies.

The third day will include a dedicated workshop composed of interactive sessions focused on the most relevant trends and challenges surrounding digital transformation and artificial intelligence.

BITEX

Running parallel to these sessions, the BITEX exhibition gives technology companies three days to showcase the latest in innovative solutions, smart systems, and next-generation services.

Beyond the Usual Programming

Two additions to this year’s agenda are worth noting. A dedicated session on the Saudi market acknowledges what many in Bahrain’s business community already know: opportunities increasingly require looking beyond national borders. Whether this session produces genuine partnerships or

simply good intentions remains to be seen, but the recognition of regional integration is timely.

The “Learning Village” and “Tech Innovators” initiative, meanwhile, attempts to address the sector’s perennial skills challenge. Getting universities to showcase their projects might help bridge the gap between academic research and commercial application, though transforming student projects into viable businesses has always been easier said than done.

Rashid Al-Snan, Chairman of BTECH, commented: “This international platform continues to play a vital role in advancing digital transformation in the region, attracting top talent, showcasing investment opportunities in technology, and underlining the profound impact of AI in shaping future economies.”

Ahmed Al-Hujairy, CEO of WorkSmart, stated: “We aim to drive collaboration between the public

and private sectors by facilitating the development of innovative solutions, technology-driven initiatives, and impactful partnerships.”

What’s at Stake?

For Bahrain, events like MEET ICT serve a purpose beyond networking. As the country works to diversify its economy, technology represents both opportunity and necessity. Getting AI adoption right could accelerate that diversification. Getting it wrong, or moving too slowly, could leave the country watching opportunities move elsewhere.

The challenge facing attendees will be cutting through the inevitable hype that surrounds AI discussions and focusing on practical applications that deliver measurable results. Three days in November won’t solve that challenge, but they might help clarify it.

TECH & INNOVATION

The American University of Bahrain has launched two new programs that aim to bridge the gap between academia and industry.

THE ULTIMATE ALL-ROUNDER

Porsche’s most powerful 911 ever combines revolutionary T-Hybrid technology with everyday usability for the ultimate driving experience.

Some cars make you choose between facemelting performance and civilised daily driving. The new Porsche 911 Turbo S refuses such compromises. This isn’t just another model update; it’s the arrival of the most powerful production 911 ever built, and it’s rewriting the

rules of what a supercar can be. Available as both coupé and cabriolet, this automotive masterpiece delivers supercar thrills without the supercar drama. As Frank Moser, Vice President of the 911 and 718 model line, puts it: “the most complete and versatile form of driving a Porsche 911.”

The T-Hybrid Powertrain

At the heart of the new Turbo S lies an innovative twin-turbo T-Hybrid system producing 523 kW (711 PS) and 800 Nm of torque. That’s 61 PS more than its predecessor, making this the most powerful 911 to date.

The system uses two electric

exhaust gas turbochargers instead of the single unit found in the 911 Carrera GTS. These specially designed turbos boost both power and responsiveness, whilst a lightweight 1.9 kWh battery powers the 400V system.

Performance figures are staggering. The Turbo S coupé rockets from 0-100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds and hits 200 km/h in 8.4 seconds. Top speed reaches 322 km/h.

Despite carrying 85 kg more weight due to hybrid components, the new car is dramatically faster on track. At the

Nürburgring Nordschleife, it lapped in 7:03.92 minutes, a massive 14 seconds quicker than its predecessor.

Track-Ready Engineering

Every system has been upgraded to handle the extra performance. The rear axle now runs 325/30 ZR 21 tyres (10mm wider than before) and the front keeps 255/35 ZR 20 rubber. The standard ceramic brake system features the largest discs ever fitted to a twodoor Porsche: 420mm front and 410mm rear.

Active aerodynamics work intelligently to reduce drag by 10% or increase downforce as needed. The electro-hydraulic Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control comes standard, using the hybrid’s 400V system for faster response whilst maintaining comfort for daily driving.

Visual changes include new Turbonite colour accents exclusive to Turbo models. The wider body gets redesigned rear ventilation openings, whilst titanium exhaust pipes save 6.8 kg.

Luxury and Personalisation

The new titanium sports exhaust system creates a soundtrack specifically composed for the Turbo S. Internal engine modifications add extra frequencies to the 3.6-litre

boxer engine, creating that distinctive throaty growl that makes every journey memorable.

The interior showcases Porsche’s attention to detail. Carbon-structured trim strips with neodyme accents and a perforated microfibre headliner

create an exclusive atmosphere. Turbo S-specific embossing on seats connects past and present.

For those wanting even more exclusivity, options include lightweight carbon elements and exclusive design touches throughout. The Paint to Sample programme offers over 100 exterior colours, ensuring no two cars need to look alike.

Porsche has even created a matching timepiece through their Design Configurator, allowing owners to wear a “sports car for the wrist” that perfectly matches their Turbo S.

The 911 Turbo S continues its tradition of being the ultimate everyday supercar, now with hybrid assistance, making it faster, more efficient, and more desirable than ever.

THE GULF GOES ELECTRIC

The GCC has become one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets, and drivers couldn’t be happier about it: reports.

If you’ve spotted more Teslas, BYDs, or whisper-quiet EVs gliding down Sheikh Zayed Road or parked at your local mall, you’re not imagining things. The Gulf region is going electric, and it’s happening faster than almost anywhere else in the world – The UAE-based Gulf News reports.

According to the newly released Roland Berger EV Charging Index 2025, the GCC has become one of the fastest-growing electric vehicle markets globally, with adoption doubling in just one year from 2% to 4% of all vehicles. Whilst that may sound modest, the pace of growth is extraordinary. And there are strong signs that residents

aren’t just experimenting with EVs, they’re committing to them for the long haul.

Growing Love for Electric

The report, based on surveys from over 12,000 people across 33 countries, found that 91% of EV owners in the

GCC plan to buy another electric car, higher than the global average of 87%. In the UAE, that figure climbs to 94%, second only to China.

What’s driving this enthusiasm? Lower fuel and maintenance costs topped the list in the UAE and Qatar, whilst in Saudi Arabia, buyers were especially drawn to the cutting-edge technology that comes with EVs. For nearly half of the respondents, sustainability and environmental concerns were also key motivations, a trend that mirrors the UAE’s and

Saudi Arabia’s broader green energy ambitions.

This isn’t about having a second car gathering dust in the garage. EVs are becoming the daily drivers for many. About one in three GCC EV owners covers more than 20,000 kilometres annually, matching EV-heavy nations like Norway and Germany.

UAE and Saudi Arabia Lead the Charge

The UAE currently leads the region in EV sales, with 24,000 electric and

plug-in hybrid vehicles sold in 2024 alone. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia saw its EV sales jump nearly tenfold in just one year, crossing 11,000 units, clear evidence that momentum is spreading across the region.

What’s helping drive this surge isn’t just demand, but also a better ownership experience, especially when it comes to charging infrastructure. Whilst EV drivers in some countries struggle with inadequate networks, the GCC is setting a global benchmark.

Charging Satisfaction Among the Best

You might think Norway or Germany would top the charts for EV charging satisfaction. Think again. According to the Roland Berger Index, Qatar, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia all scored above 94% satisfaction, putting them ahead of many more mature EV markets. That’s thanks to a steady rollout of

accessible, reliable, and well-placed charging points. Dubai now has more than 1,270 public chargers, and Abu Dhabi is working towards 500 more by 2028 through a partnership between ADNOC and TAQA. In Saudi Arabia, the government-backed EVIQ initiative aims to install 5,000 chargers across 1,000 locations by 2030, with installations

already operating in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dammam.

From Government to Private Power

Government support has been crucial in getting the EV movement rolling, but now the private sector is stepping in to accelerate growth. Companies like Electromin in Saudi Arabia and

Al-Futtaim in the UAE are investing in infrastructure, expanding access, and helping the region maintain its worldclass satisfaction ratings.

There’s still room for improvement. According to the report, 43% of GCC EV drivers want faster charging options, especially along motorways. Experts say the next wave of progress will focus on rapid chargers, better digital

locator tools, and more diverse charging locations, from petrol stations to supermarkets and residential buildings.

A Clear Direction for the Road Ahead

A year ago, the GCC’s electric vehicle market was still seen as up-andcoming. Today, it’s one of the fastestrising anywhere. With soaring interest,

growing infrastructure, and impressive satisfaction levels, the region is well on its way to becoming a true EV hub.

For anyone in the UAE or GCC considering their next car, electric might not just be the greener option. It might also be the smarter one.very talented and all from the region.

Gulf Air, the national carrier of the Kingdom of Bahrain, has relaunched its direct flights from Bahrain International Airport to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, marking a significant milestone in the deep-rooted

friendship and strategic partnership between Bahrain and the United States. The resumption of this route underscores both nations’ commitment to strengthening cooperation and opening new horizons in trade, culture, and tourism. Gulf Air’s direct link to New York also highlights the airline’s

pivotal role in connecting Bahrain to global markets, supporting economic growth, and expanding opportunities for commercial and cultural exchange.

High-Profile Reception at JFK

A formal reception was held at JFK Airport to mark the occasion, attended

by His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin

Rashid Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Jamal Faris Al-Ruwaie, Permanent Representative of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, and Sarah Ahmed Buhiji, CEO of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, alongside Gulf Air’s official delegation and senior airport officials. The highprofile attendance reflected the event’s significance and its role in advancing bilateral relations.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Sheikh Abdullah highlighted the strategic importance of reinstating direct flights between Bahrain and New York, describing it as a landmark

moment in the historical partnership between the two nations.

Sarah Ahmed Buhiji emphasised that the launch of this direct route signifies a transformative step for Bahrain’s growing presence on the global tourism map, opening wider opportunities to engage with the U.S. market, in line with the objectives of the Tourism Strategy 2022-2026.

Celebrations in Bahrain

Simultaneously, Bahrain International Airport hosted a celebration for the inaugural direct flight to New York, attended by Khalid Hussein Tuqi, Chairman of Gulf Air Group, Elizabeth

Leitchfield, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to Bahrain, Hussein Ahmed Shuaile, Undersecretary for Civil Aviation Affairs at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, along with senior Gulf Air and airport officials.

Three Weekly Flights

Gulf Air will operate three weekly flights to JFK, offering travellers seamless access to New York and onward connections across the Americas. As Gulf Air continues to expand its network, the airline reaffirms its commitment to providing exceptional service and bridging the East and West, further enhancing Bahrain’s status as a dynamic international travel hub.

THE GCC GRAND TOURS

A unified tourist visa launching in late 2025 will allow seamless travel across all six GCC nations, transforming the region into a multi-destination hotspot.

The GCC is about to make regional travel dramatically simpler. The GCC Unified Tourist Visa, dubbed “GCC Grand Tours,” is set for a trial launch in late 2025, with full rollout to follow shortly after.

The visa will allow seamless travel across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman, mimicking Europe’s Schengen model. Jassim Al-Budaiwi, GCC Secretary-General,

confirmed the visa is in its final approval phase, with applications soon available via a digital platform.

Who Benefits Most?

Whilst GCC citizens already enjoy visa-free travel within the region, the visa primarily targets millions of foreign residents living in the GCC. It simplifies visa processes, offering longer validity and lower costs compared to obtaining six separate visas.

UAE Minister of Economy, Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, emphasised that residents, not just national passport holders, will gain easier mobility, making documents like the Emirates ID more powerful for regional travel.

Expected Features

Though details are still being finalised, the visa may offer options for single-country or six-country access,

with validity periods ranging from 30 to 90 days.

This flexibility will cater to diverse travel needs, encouraging tourism and boosting regional economies.

The visa’s digital platform will simplify applications, aligning with global technological advancements and security standards.

Challenges Remain

The six GCC nations are aligning technological and security requirements to ensure a smooth launch. Whilst the visa’s framework is nearly complete, final details, such as specific application requirements, are still under review.

The collaborative efforts, discussed in a June 2025 Riyadh meeting,

reflect a commitment to overcoming these hurdles for a successful implementation.

Game-Changer for Residents

By allowing residents to move freely across six countries, the GCC Grand Tours Visa will enhance regional connectivity and cultural exchange. It reduces bureaucratic hurdles, lowers costs, and promotes tourism, positioning the GCC as a unified travel destination.

Currently, UAE residents face varied visa requirements across GCC countries. For instance, UAE citizens enter Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar visa-free, but non-citizen residents often need eVisas or on-arrival visas.

In August, Kuwait announced it will grant tourist visas on arrival for GCC residents, allowing entry with a GCC ID card. In October 2024, the UAE announced the rollout of a 30-day eVisa for expatriate residents of GCC countries, following certain conditions, including validity of residency for at least one year and passports for at least six months.

The unified visa will standardise and streamline these processes.

DANCING UNDER THE STARS

Deepika Rao stepped through the Eternal Fire at AZIMUTH Music Festival and found herself in another dimension.

There’s something special about dancing at 2:30 AM under a sky full of stars, desert sand kicking up around you, with ancient rock formations towering overhead. That’s AZIMUTH for you, a music festival set in one of the region’s most stunning locations: AlUla.

Saudi Arabia has become the GCC’s go-to place for big, bold music events. MDL Beast and Soundstorm have put the Kingdom on the map for festival experiences, from mainstream to underground. AZIMUTH is part of that growing scene, and this year it lined up nicely with the Kingdom’s 95th National Day celebrations.

You get why they chose AlUla as soon as you step into the festival. The rocky cliffs look dramatic against the golden lights of the festival, and the cool evening air is perfect for a festival. The entrance sets the tone with an installation called the Eternal Flame. Walking through that ring of Eternal Fire (simulated) actually feels like crossing

into another world.

From 8 PM to 7 AM, Thanaya Venue transformed completely. Time worked differently when the desert energy, ancient history, and modern electronic music blended.

What makes AZIMUTH different from other festivals, though, is how it’s put together. The two-day festival feels more intimate and thoughtful than some of the bigger events on the calendar. This year marked its fifth edition on 25-26 September, and it was my first time experiencing it.

The two-day festival feels more intimate and thoughtful than some of the bigger events on the calendar.

Two Stages

The festival had two stages, each with its own vibe. The Hive by Ray-Ban focused on the region’s underground sound. The lineup featured incredible artists such as Saudi DJ BRQ, Vinyl Mode, Hi-Fi, Akladios, Chiati, and Tala Mortada, keeping it going over the two days.

The Main Stage is where things got really interesting. When I finally caught

Turkish artist Mahmut Orhan around half past two in the morning, it felt like the night had barely started. The Main Stage lineup over the two days was solid.

From Palestinian-Jordanian singing sensation Zeyne and Saudi duo DISH DASH to UK favourites London Grammar and South African Music Producer, SHIMZA, the main stage continuously presented its audience

with regional and international talents, each bringing something different to AlUla’s starry night and surreal vibe.

More Than Music

AZIMUTH has, for five years running, been a cultural event where international talent meets Saudi creativity in one of the world’s most striking locations. The landscape is enough to take your breath away, but with the music, culture, and entertainment, the experience was outworldly.
