Why do you love

living in Bahrain?

Residents share the reasons why they love living in Bahrain!

W

hy do you love living in Bahrain? A question that somehow most residents love sharing their thoughts on. A melting pot of diverse cultures, Bahrain is an island that is easy to fall in love with. Despite the kingdom being small in size, it definitely boasts a multitude of great things.

The people and their diversity Bahrainis are some of the most hospitable and welcoming persons you’ll ever come across with. Similarly, you will also be able to observe that the expat community is one of the warmest/friendliest you’ll ever find. In general, the citizens and residents in Bahrain don’t discriminate and are very open to different cultures.

10 Bahrain Confidential September - October 2020

Feature Here are a couple of reasons why residents love living in Bahrain!

The culture Bahrain is rich with its heritage, culture, tradition, arts and cuisine. Meanwhile, the vibe of the country is diversified with its number of vibrant expat communities. Bahrain’s openness also translates to its social customs which are much more relaxed than its neighboring countries.

The sense of safety

Based on a survey we’ve conducted in our social media platforms, residents in Bahrain feel safer here as opposed to their home countries. According to them, the country has a secure environment that is a great place to live in or even raise a family. n

Here’s what our followers are saying:

The Perfect Setup Do Bahrain residents prefer to work at home or in the office?

A

s we have all experienced firsthand, the COVID-19 pandemic has abruptly challenged each and every workplace in Bahrain. Some have already reopened their offices, while others are planning to bring their employees back gradually over the coming weeks.

After months of working from home, the idea of returning to the office will feel challenging to many. Convenience and productivity are two of the main reasons why residents prefer to continue working remotely. “The health of my family are my main concern and will not will not be gambled by someone else’s lack of adherence to precautionary measures.” Shaheen, a citizen who currently works from home said.

12 Bahrain Confidential September - October 2020

Feature Safety issues aside, many people say they have experienced increased productivity and better time management while working from home. Ann, who works for an advertising company, said “I prefer to work from home because I feel it saves a lot of time if you're focused on the task at hand.” While many want to stay at home, some are also eager to work in the office.

“I believe it’s generally better to separate home from work, and it’s easier to work as a team when we are together in the office.”, he added.

Sam, a designer said working in Seef, “I like being in the office as it sets the mood for working better. There are no distractions from the kids and it also saves electricity consumption.”

“Personally, I prefer working in the office most days as I’m closer to the team. It also provides a better environment and more productivity.” Peter, who works for a media production agency said.

As many workers in the Kingdom near the six-month mark of working remotely, those who have done their jobs from home say they have adjusted to change but miss interacting with people.

Why Not Both?

Ultimately, an efficient work culture can never be created in an unsafe or uncomfortable environment.

Almost all residents that we’ve interviewed prefer a hybrid/mixed working setup. According to them, working from home and Zoom meetings are a poor substitute for across-the-table, personal meetings with people. Furthermore, they want to see a flexible system in which people go to the office for tasks that are better done there and work from home for the rest of the time.

Are “Offices” Going to Disappear? Some large office buildings may have to downsize because of the popularity and success of working remotely. However, we don’t think that offices will disappear; it will only require a fresh, new approach. People will still need places where they can come together, connect, build relationships, and develop their careers. Ultimately, an efficient work culture can never be created in an unsafe or uncomfortable environment. n

Tips to help you stay motivated while working from home!

C

ompared to its neighboring countries, Bahrain didn’t implement any lockdowns. However, the Kingdom is continuously combatting the coronavirus with numerous safety protocols and safety measures; including the encouragement of remote working.

There are definitely many distractions at home. If you’re used to a structured office environment, working from home can be challenging. Is working from home not working? We’ve sorted out some essential tips that will ensure you are successful, both at getting your work done and maintaining your mental wellbeing. Read on to learn how to keep yourself more accountable, collaborative and productive!

14 Bahrain Confidential September - October 2020

Feature Set up a dedicated work space or home office

Take clear breaks

One of the major challenges when it comes to working remotely is keeping your personal and work lives separate. Instead of cooping yourself up in your room or on the couch, dedicate a specific work space.

123 6 45

It’s so easy to get distracted when you avoid breaks altogether. Use your breaks to get away from your desk – breaks, like making lunch or dinner – can recharge you to do better work.

Get dressed

This might seem like a simple tip, but it’s a vital one. The mental association you make between work and going to an office can make you more productive. Do all the things you’d usually do to prepare for office work: set an alarm, have coffee and get changed. You don’t have to dress as formally as you might for work. However, the act of getting dressed serves as a signal that it’s time to get up and get things done.

Staying somewhere you associate with sleep and relaxation could take a huge toll on your productivity. Try working from a consistent room, desk or chair – it should feel as separate from the rest of your home as possible.

Develop a schedule and stick to this

Like how you designate and separate your physical work space, you should also define a schedule. When you want to learn how to work from home efficiently, one foolproof way to keep productivity up is to get smart about planning your work day. You should be clear about when you’re working and when you’re not. Having a separate time and space to work will allow you to be more present in your home life.

Socialize You're working from home, not Mars. Interacting with other people during the day is allowed, even if they're not your coworkers. In fact, it's a good idea to talk to someone during the day when most of your work day is solitary.

Tune in to inspiration

A great advantage of working from home is that you can’t distract your colleagues. Go ahead and play those pumped-up jams loud and proud if that’s what gets you moving. Or try a more soothing soundtrack with nature sounds, instrumental music, or even by leaving the windows open to let the sounds from outside come in. Try a few things to find what works best for you. n

Going Out

Crossroads of Cuisines Bahrain Confidential interviews Shareef Elias Kharouba, the Multi Property Director of Operations at Marriott Executive Apartments and Residence Inn by Marriott.

W

hat’s the concept behind Crossroads? Crossroads offers a warm and relaxed meeting place where a diverse mix of people can get together at any time of day to enjoy anything from a simple Chai latte from our specialty coffee bar to an intimate dinner from our modern classic menu in a stylish but laid back atmosphere. What kind of clientele is the restaurant catering to? Crossroads is a gathering space where everyone is welcome. We attract a diverse mix of clientele comprising our in-house hotel guests as well as business and casual diners, given our convenient location in Juffair with easy parking.

16 Bahrain Confidential September - October 2020

Going Out By day, Crossroads is the ideal spot for an early nutritious breakfast or healthy smoothie before work, a discreet business lunch or a cosy afternoon coffee and catch-up with friends. In the evening, it’s the perfect place for a relaxed dinner either solo or with a group of friends or colleagues.

Shareef Elias Kharouba

Crossroads is a gathering space where everyone is welcome.

Tell us more about the restaurant’s cuisine, what are the dishes going to be? Our menu is diverse and creative. We offer new flavour combinations of familiar British, European and Middle Eastern classics. Whilst we take pride in expertly preparing simple authentic dishes such as perfectly cooked steaks, classic British fish and chips, and authentic Italian pizzas and homemade gelato; we also offer modern flavours of Arabia reflected in dishes such as our Crossroads Mezza Platter, Smoked Salmon Rolls stuffed with labneh za’atar and Falafel and Quinoa Salad with tahini dressing. Our Traditional Arabic Breakfast is a favourite for weekend brunch, as are our Rosewater Waffles. The Crossroads Burger is a must-try: grilled Angus beef served in a signature crispy cheese-stuffed bun. For the more health conscious, we have the Buttermilk Chicken Burger or, one of my

personal favourites, the Crossroads Signature Salad: lamb kofta, baby spinach and rocket leaves with pomegranate dressing. If you’re dropping in for an afternoon coffee, our Spanish and Matcha lattes are very popular (and perfect with a slice of homemade Russian honey cake and scoop of homemade pistachio gelato) or if you’re looking for something to kick-start your day you can’t beat our freshly made zingy Beetroot & Ginger juice alongside the Prawn Benedict from our a la carte breakfast menu. Can you tell us a bit about the interior design? The design is organic; a mix of wood and muted tones, complemented by modern lighting, which immediately creates warmth when you enter. The seating is a mix of lounge chairs and more formal for dining. We knew Crossroads would become a hangout for afternoon coffees which run into dinners and for long evening get-togethers, so we made sure to use wide seats and soft cushions to maximise comfort and quality time with friends and family. We are also planning to have a cosy outdoor seating area where guests can enjoy a fresh pomegranate lemonade or a Moroccan mint tea al fresco during the cooler months. n

A Sensual Fragrance

Adapt the Way Forward You must bend so you don’t break. Walking with masks. No lipsticks. No hugging. No handshake. Virtual meetings and parties. Being scared of anyone when they cough or sneeze. Couple of months back this would have sounded absurd right? But we can’t imagine life without these changes anymore. Designer masks have become part of the attire. Keys are used to press lift buttons. Life without Sanitizers have become unbelievable. It’s a sign of true adaptability. Humans can change to any extent to survive. I love observing the before and after changes of the lockdown period to see the clear human behavioral change. People who were not ready to change with the new ways were left behind. The start of this era washed away lot of old patterns of thinking and we observed the first movers advantage here. The new way forced businesses to innovate, reinvent to continue to survive. I was one of the stubborn one. Being a yoga instructor, I never thought anyone would want to learn yoga online how you could correct someone postures over the screen? It’s impossible. But it happened. All of my students were really happy to continue even if online and I was surprised!! Who knew we could go without social interaction. Who knew we could tolerate masks on our faces? Who knew we would be afraid of someone standing close to us. The pandemic tested how much we can bend without breaking

Chanel has a seductive new fragrance for you – the COCO MADEMOISELLE L’EAU PRIVÉE!

A

What I have learned from this phase? That if you set the path for a new normal, people will follow. In a place uncertainty where everyone is looking for direction to move in. They are looking for someone to take a step forward. No matter how absurd the idea maybe it will work as long as it’s a step forward. To adapt we can go to any extent follow absurd ideas and patterns. Make sure you are the one taking the step forward and coming up with ideas rather than following them. n

I

admit that I did head out here for a luxurious getaway, but little did I know that upon my descent back to Bahrain & for the many years to follow, what will stay with me, is actually a memory much simpler, in fact, just 4 words: Something beautiful about nothingness. Welcome to my story of the Alps; the untold story of the Land of Adelboden. Chances are, you haven’t even heard the name of this village, let alone considered it in your itinerary. You’re probably wondering how I stumbled

Feature upon this little best kept secret of Switzerland. No, it wasn’t anyone’s Instagram story and definitely not a result of honeymoon-destination-hunting (considering you need to be married first, to be honeymooning). The answer is The Cambrian. Perfectly embedded in the land of the Alps, just like a ruby in a diamond tiara, this hotel was all things “royal”. International design-award winner, it was the perfect Alpine escape, that married attention to detail with comforting warmth; in generosity. Evenings accompanied by my folks and the crackling fireplace and mornings garnished with rhythmic sounds of the Church bells and waterfalls echoing through the mountains, that changed colour as dawn made its way to dusk.

from the same Alps, so long as he lives? The answer was actually, very simple. Adelboden’s sacredness. A life, light years away from anything commercial, with its air so quiet and hearts so pure, that the simplicity of this village found me in love with it, the moment we said hello! It made me believe, the Earth still has some gems treasured for those of us, who feel that just sitting beside mother nature, is the most beautiful state of being, one can savor. Quiet never sounded so cheerful before and nothingness, never felt this fulfilling. So, for as long as I can remember, I stood there, just, stood there. Breathing in the beauty of the greens and browns before my eyes and listening closely, to the hymn of the Alps, that said, “I’ll be here by your side, as you open your eyes to each morning. And when you return, I’ll still be here, for forever more to come, patiently waiting to see you again.” n

A life, light years away from anything commercial, with its air so quiet and hearts so pure, that the simplicity of this village found me in love with it.

Sometimes I sit back and wonder what was it about Adelboden that touched my heart like nowhere else; and so effortlessly? Was it the walk through the lanes laden with the aroma of freshly baked loaves of bread and desserts at their local BACKEREIs (aka bakery in Swiss tongue) or was it the chance to admire farmers taking respite from green pastures, just to celebrate and pride over each other in close gatherings? Was it the old lady who hugged me close as I bought her handcrafted wooden coasters to make her some income for the day, asking my name as she wished to pray for me that evening in the church? Or perhaps the lovely tale of that souvenir shop owner, about how he devoted 70 years of his life towards his forefathers’ heritage shop and his love to see the sun rise each morning

Catcalling in Bahrain Why it’s not normal and what you should do about it…

I

n 2020, women across generations are taking a stand against sexual harassment and assault. “Catcalls of Bahrain” is a prime example of a local movement that is bringing these issues to light. Just recently, we had the chance to talk to Jawaher, the creator of the page to know more.

Can you tell us briefly about 'Catcalls of Bahrain' - what was your aim and how do you plan on achieving that through this initiative? Catcalls of Bahrain is a safe space in which we give voice to people and their experiences with all kinds of harassment - catcalling being the most common form. It is also a space where we educate people about the more “taboo” topics most of which rely under the harassment umbrella.

22 Bahrain Confidential September - October 2020

Feature

Additionally, we try to aid victims by educating them about resources such as Shamsaha and the cybersecurity hotline (992). Our aim is to reach as many people as possible, shifting the societal view on catcalling from “flirting” to harassment. We plan on achieving this initiative through the online platform Instagram. What do you think people should understand about catcalling? People need to realize that catcalling and being followed by a car does not constitute as flirting whatsoever. It is cheap, vulgar, and has no place in the Bahraini society.

It is cheap, vulgar, and has no place in the Bahraini society. Catcalls of Bahrain has followers who are minors and have shared their experiences; which is very unsettling. What advice would you give these young women who are experiencing catcalling for the first time? I would say that this isn’t your fault – dressing differently, going out at a different time of day, or even going to another, less crowded place wouldn’t prevent this. Harassers are out everywhere and you did not ask for it whatsoever. Please do not blame yourself for someone else’s actions. Is there a "best" way to deal with catcallers and harassers while it's happening? All instances of catcalling are different. I can’t actually tell people what to do because I know people who

have been punched by their harassers for talking back, but I also know that staying quiet doesn’t do much. What I recommend is writing down the harasser's car plate number and reporting them to the authorities as catcalling is a violation of article 351 of the Bahrain Penal Code. If one doesn't feel comfortable going to the authorities alone, Shamsaha has a program where they have a volunteer accompany victims at the police station. What steps do the victims of catcalling (or harassment in general) need to do in Bahrain? Report, report, report! Report this to the authorities they need to learn their lesson. Can you share some emergency hotlines for our readers? Bahrain cybersecurity hotline: 992 - Can be used for victims of online threats and/or harassment - such as one threatening to leak explicit chats/photos. No, you won’t get in trouble for sending explicit content. n

Bahrain traffic police: 199 - Can be used for when one is being followed home by a car. Bahrain emergency hotline: 999 - Can be used for instances of sexual harassment, physical harassment and/or rape. Shamsaha English hotline: 38447588 - Can be used as emotional support for victims of abuse. Shamsaha Arabic hotline: 66710901 - Can be used as emotional support for victims of abuse.

tamjeet Singh Bawa also know as ‘Paper Model Guru’ is an expat as a Telecom Solution Architect in one of the leading telecommunications company in Bahrain. Atamjeet has been creating unique and intricate paper models for the past 17 years. Just recently, we had the chance to talk to him about his craft. Tell us more about yourself. I am an expat working in Bahrain as a 'Telecom Solution Architect'. I travel with my job profile to work in different countries and Bahrain happens to be my 7th country (lucky number). However, people across the globe recognize me as 'Paper Model Guru' (Guy with an airplane on his glasses), a passionate paper modeler who creates highly detailed machines using only paper as a medium. Would you say that this is your passion? I am a passionate person in general, it's in my nature and personality to do things with passion or not at all. Passion is what defines me and passion is what motivates me. Yes, paper modeling is my passion and my ikigai.

What does art/your work mean to you? When I was a child, both I and my dad wanted myself to become a pilot but destiny had something else to bless me with. I have always been fascinated with airplanes and machines in general. I would spend hours and hours watching a road being built, observing the functions of a JCB, questioning the role of a track in a tank etc. I have always been curious. I think that is why when I make my favorite machines out of paper, it brings back my childhood memories. I could never fly an airplane, but whenever I create a detailed model of an airplane, it gives me the same kind of an adrenaline rush that flying a fighter jet would have offered me. It's my "happy place". What advice would you say to aspiring artists? Try out things, be a doer of things, rather than just thinking about doing things. You need to get out of your comfort zone in a quest to find your passion. Don't plan much, there will never be a perfect day, start NOW. Which part of Bahrain is your favourite and why? I love Bahrain as a country for its diversity, inclusivity and respect for the huge expat population. I have 2 favorite places in Bahrain, first is the balcony of my apartment (Juffair Heights) that faces westwards, I love spending time in my balcony where I get the best of the ideas and my favorite thing is watching sunset everyday. And second favorite place is Bahrain Bay for it's beautiful sunrise. n

HV Holistic Health -

Reset Your Mindset Embrace the situation with potential for evolving and elevating yourself.

D

uring these peculiar times you may have found it difficult to motivate yourself.

If you managed to stay active this quarantine, that’s awesome. If you haven’t that isn’t always a bad thing, perhaps the break did you good. It is now time to put all this aside and get back into a good routine with exercise.

Many exercise injuries occur due to incorrect/poor form. Here are HV’s top tips to help you get back into your routine safely.

Start Slow It’s important to know that it’s normal to feel that your fitness level is lower than usual. Even more so if you have had a long break so there’s no room for negative self-talk. Think short-term adjustment at the beginning as you get your body and muscle activation back. Start slow and gradually increase distance/time/ intensity progressively throughout the first 8–10 sessions. Starting off too heavy or too fast can lead to physical injuries as well as emotional setbacks. Build your confidence with every session.

44 Bahrain Confidential September - October 2020

Warm Up/Cool down This message is not new, and should always be practiced, but even more so now that you may have had a lengthy layoff. Warming up the muscles with mobilisation and activation drills, then cooling-down with a stretch routine can help decrease muscle soreness and the risk of injury. Five to seven minutes every workout can save you months of rehabbing an injury that could have been avoided with a simple warm up and cool down.

Stay Hydrated It’s summertime and, the heat can be uncomfortable, you need to stay on top of hydration levels to make sure you don’t cramp or worse become dehydrated.

Practice correct form Many exercise injuries occur due to incorrect/ poor form. Whether it is cardio or weight training, make sure you are doing the exercise in the correct movement pattern and getting that muscle memory back. Having a trainer correct your technique is always advisable. Our fitness studios have reopened, make sure you take the proper steps for your body. It may take some time to get back to where you once were, but it will be worth it! n For more information on how we can help contact HV Holistic Health. on 1777 5544, @hvholistic or info@hvholistichealth.com

My favorite place is Amwaj. Nothing beats waking up to a breathtaking sea view every day. What do you most like, and dislike, about your work? There is a lot I like about my work. If you can change anything in your life, what would it be? Absolutely nothing! Challenges are an opportunity for us to learn and grow, they keep us grounded. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. What makes you happy? The simple things in life – a moment with my toddlers in the park, enjoying a day at the. beach with my family and friends. Being French, gourmet food also makes me very happy, but it doesn’t beat a moment with my kids! Favorite motto or saying: “Your talent determines what you can do.
