History tells us that the influence of the Arabian mare on future generations is profound—and sometimes underestimated. Stallions often dominate breeding conversation; the most popular stallions produce many hundreds, some even thousands, of offspring. Conversely, a very prolific mare might produce 20 or so offspring in her lifetime. Nonetheless, it is the great mares of the breed that are the foundation for dynasties. It is the Bedouin tribesmen who first understood a special mare’s irreplaceable value. It is no wonder that those special mares were the most highly valued spoils of battle. It was these brave nomads who first loved and understood the Arabian horse and whose very lives often were dependent upon their mounts as they traversed the Arabian Peninsula.

The truly special mares of the Arabian breed are few and far between. These mares, who have had the most profound influence on the future of the breed were often the most beautiful, the most athletic and the most tractable of their respective generation. It is notable, therefore, that those mares who have had the greatest influence on future generations did not influence the breed simply by their own beauty, but through their offspring’s ability to perpetuate the beauty and athletic ability of that mare line to future generations. There is no question that Veronica GA has distinguished herself as one of those special mares.

Veronica GA is a U.S. National Champion daughter of the immortal Versace. Her dam is a champion daughter of U.S. National Champion Stallion Echo Magnifficoo. Veronica imbodies the most desirable qualities of these two great

stallions. She reflects the exceptional Arabian type of Versace, which is directly linked to the extreme beauty of Versace’s dam, the exquisite Precious As Gold, sired by *El Shaklan, a legend himself. Precious As Goldis herself one of the Arabian breed’s special mares. Those who knew Echo Magnifficoo understand that his prepotency in producing a powerful shoulder and neck remain legendary and reliable for generations to come. Veronica’s tail female line traces directly to the most important stallion in the Arabian breed, the immortal *Bask++. It is the influence of *Bask that charges Veronica’s genetic profile with the energy and carriage of genuine athletic ability.

As is the case with all highly valued Arabian bloodstock, each embodies extraordinary phenotypical qualities. More rarely, these special Arabian mares possess the ability to reproduce, with consistency, the“signatur equalities” that they themselves possess. Versace has imprinted Veronica and her progeny with

his world-class Arabian type. Multiple lines to the incomparable *Bask provide Veronica with the powerful carriage and show horse attitude. Her exceptional length of neck and strong shoulder are the qualities that carried Veronica to the winner’s circle. In her limited show career, she was named Unanimous U.S. National Champion in a class of 38 entries as a 3-year-old.

However, it is not Veronica’s show ring success that qualifies her as one the breed’s special mares. The singular quality that distinguishes Veronica as one of the most valuable and important mares of her generation is her ability to consistently reproduce the very qualities that make her a great individual. Of the seven foals out of Veronica that have been shown at Scottsdale, U.S. Nationals or Canadian Nationals, six have been Scottsdale or U.S. and Canadian National Champions. Three have been international champions at major competitions in Saudi Arabia, South America and Australia.

There is not another mare inthe Arabian breed who has sons and daughters producing future champions on five continents.

Veronica GA was bred by Cathy Thomson of Waxhaw, North Carolina. As a small breeder, Cathy knew Veronica was special from the start. She was sold to Patti and Mike Scheier as a 2-year-old and began her breeding career the following year. Veronica made a bold announcement with the birth of her first foals. Among her first were Scottsdale Gold Champion SF Veraz and U.S. and Canadian Reserve National Champion PCF Vision. SF Veraz has produced many Scottsdale, Regional and U.S. Champions before being sold to Marcos Barros Tinoco in Brazil, and he has clearly identified himself as one of the premier stallions in the world. His get are winning major championships in Brazil, while in the U.S. his daughters are producing some of the most exciting young show horses in the breed. Recent U.S. National Champions Exxaltress, owned

by Orrion Farms, and Exxalt, one of the breed’s most exciting young stallions who stands with Ted Carson, are full siblings out of the SF Veraz daughter Vesperra.

PCF Vision, bred by Sam Peacemaker, gained national attention with two national titles in the U.S. and Canadian Futurities and sired PCF Crystal Vision, the reigning U.S. Reserve National Champion Senior Mare owned by Rae-Dawn Arabians. Shortly thereafter PCF Vision was sold to Prince Saud Bin Sultan Bin Saud al Saud of Saudi Arabia. This stallion has continued his winning ways with championships at the major shows in the Gulf States’ highly competitive show ring. Veronica’s first filly, Verily PCF, also distinguished herself right away. She was second in her Yearling Filly class in Scottsdale, consistently the most anticipated and competitive yearling class in the world.

Verily went on to win several Regional Championships as well a Youth National Champion Mare title.

Professor Motaz Ghulman of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, had been breeding Arabian horses for several years before he crossed paths with Brad and Holli Gallún. Professor Ghulman had recently sold the mares that he had bred and owned. “These mares were beautiful, and I loved them, but they did not represent the quality that I wanted.

When I began my relationship with Brad, he helped me to recognize what I really wanted was one of those ‘special’ mares,” explains Professor Ghulman.“I knew Veronica from her reputation as an amazing producer, and I loved her bloodlines. When I mentioned her name to Brad, he agreed that she was indeed one of those special mares.

He was personally familiar with her as he had shown her and sold her to the Scheiers. Brad was not terribly optimistic that her owner, Sam Peacemaker, would be willing to sell her.

I couldn’t get her out of my mind, even as we considered other mares. With some timely AHM | 3

encouragement from Holli, Brad called Sam. Brad called me back shortly; he said he had great news and some not-so-great news. Sam was willing to sell Veronica, but he was virtually nonnegotiable. Nonetheless, 24 hours later a deal had been struck and we owned a mare that I had dreamed of! Veronica has more than lived up to my lofty expectations. We are very excited to be a part of her life and the dynasty she is still creating. My good friend Ayman Altayyar joined me in this venture shortly thereafter. We have studied and talked and talked and studied about which stallions we would use with Veronica; this year’s foals represent the most important and influential stallions in the breed. We are very excited.”

In the past two years, Veronica produced two outstanding fillies, both sired by the breed’s leading sire Marwan Al Shaqab. Both fillies are owned by Mindy Peters Arabians and will make their show ring debuts this year with high levels of expectation and excitement for both. There is no doubt they both will follow the tradition of success and greatness that Veronica has firmly established for herself and her progeny.

The 2019 foaling season will be Veronica’s busiest to date; beginning in February, Veronica will produce foals sired by Gazal Al Shaqab, EKS Alihandro, QR Marc and RHR Marcedes.

Veronica GA is true to her pedigree and to her progeny. She has produced National and International Champion mares and stallions, and her offspring are producing their own new generations of Veronica’s global influence and expanding dynasty. Veronica is a living example of the “families”that are created by the Arabian breed’s great mares. We are all fortunate to watch how this special mare continues to influence the Arabian breed. By every measure, Veronica GA is one of the Arabian breed’s “special”mares, a mare that inspires the great expectation of the future, as well as reverence for what she has already contributed.

Dear Readers, Behind the Arabian horse there is a boundless world of free time, sport, competition, love for a companion that every day teaches us about passionate living and lifelong learning with an energy that is unknown to other disciplines. The year that we have just left behind confirmed the dynamism of this scenario which, despite the economic and bureaucratic difficulties, still moves forward an important sector for all of us in this community. At very heart of this edition is our 2019 Tour in the Middle Eastern countries, a 25-day journey that really catapulted us into the motherland of the Arabian Horse. We took part in the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Festival held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at the beginning of the 2019 show-season; we were invited to Athbah’s party and to the Open day organized by Al Milad Stud where we watched a presentation of many wonderful A r a b i a n specimens; we joined in the Kuwait International Arabian Horse Festival where we met several friends and breeders and visited some of the many local farms around the city to end up in the United Arab Emirates to attend the Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse Championship. A magnificent experience that made us learn even more about Arabian horses - where they come from and where they acquired all their appreciated virtues. This edition outlines how noble farms and important stables - Dubai Arabian Horse Stud, Al Saqran, Al Milad, Abhaa Arabians, but also many passionate private breeders from all over the world are indefatigably devoted to this breed, either as a legacy of past times or as a breeding animal to be developed and safeguarded, giving him an imprint in accordance with his type, just as the ancient Bedouins used to do.

We had the chance to interview for the very first time Mr. Emad Alkandary, President and owner of Al Safir Stud, Kuwait, and Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed Sharif Al Baidhaei, Chairman of ARMS

Group and owner of the award-winning breeding and equestrian company Al Jawaher Stud in the UAE. Two smart businessmen and visionary breeders that are carrying forward two very successful breeding programs, each in their own way, drawing upon the very best the Arabian horse industry has given to humankind through time. We met and interviewed judge Renata Schibler, handler Andreas Birkenseer, Tony Bauwens and his girlfriend Kelly Delen, both handlers and protagonists of the Riding Couple section.

As always, we have included articles about some of the best contemporary representatives of the breed: QR Marc, Expressivo KA, Kanz Albidayer, Dominic M, the beautiful D Shihanah from Dubai Horse Stud and the ultra-gorgeous Exxaltress from Orrions Farm, US. A touch of glamor has been added to the Magazine by introducing the ‘Fashion Hub’, a new section dedicated to the ones whose big love for the Arabian horse led them to designing amazing outfits for horse riders at a later stage of their career in this industry.

Tatiana Coffman and her extraordinar y creations are a clear expression of this new artistic tendency. A new development of the Magazine is also a fantastic photo gallery aimed at further showcasing the ‘beauty’ of the Arabian horse. The shots proposed by Glenn Jacobs, Alessio Azzali, Gregor Aymar, Javan Shaller and Nawaf Al Johani immortalize, so to say, that inner spiritual dimension of the Arabian horse that often remains invisible to the inexpert eye and that only photography can convey at its best. Therefore, it is not surprising that there exist out there many ways of pursuing and implementing the commitment to the Arabian breed as a whole. However, these different ways share a common denominator, a deep love that binds us altogether and comes back to us as a healing therapy. Such a therapy gets to us by itself, prescribed by the heart and fuelled by passion as it were.

This is the biggest horse show in the Middle East and it is run over three days in March, culminating in the Championship classes for the most exquisite horses from across the Gulf region. Held under the patronage of HH Sh. Hamdam bin Rashid Al Maktoum, De-

puty Ruler of Dubai, and UAE Minister of Finance, the Dubai Arabian Horse Championship is nowadays the most prestigious competition of its kind in the world.

It is a beauty competition for Purebred Arabian horses, from the very young to the elderly horse stars of the Arabian equine world.

The 2010 Championship was promoted to ECAHO ‘Title Show’ status; only few Shows in the world hold this prestigious award and bought high class compe-

From the very first day of her life, this little pretty filly has not only showed the extraordinary exotic type which she got from her sire, the American born stallion FA EL Rasheem (FA El Shawan x Virtuosa MLR by Ve r s a c e ) , but also the refinement and finesse which she inherited from her dam, the home bred World Champion D Shahla (Marajj x Ft Shaella).

you turn at the Dubai Arabian Horse stud who knew how to truly utilize the great potential within him and their decision to bred him to their homebred mare D Shahla proved to be an exceptional choice.

FA EL Rasheem has not only given rise to a new generation, the ‘D’ generation, but also, he has brought forward individuals that are fast winning prices and awards at major international gatherings. Mr. Mohammed Al Tawheedi and Mr. Ab delaziz Al Marzooqi, and all the DAHS Team have been able to build upon the genotypic and phenotypic power that FA EL Rasheem possesses.

Year after year, the foals crops at Dubai Stud accrued with foals of the same high-end standard and the little showy D Shihanah is no exception. By grabbing at age 1 her first

Gold Medal in Menton 2018, she has deservedly found herself as being one of them.

The dam line of D Shihanah is epitomized mostly by the best foundation mares at the Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. After years of reliable and trustworthy breeding program, Mr. Mohammed Al Tawheedi and Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi have very sensibly built a building-block of wisdom, beauty, and selection. D Shihanah’s dam is the classy grey mare D Shahla (2012), who, herself, is a great champion in international shows. She has won many important world prizes: like the Gold Championship of Junior Females Paris 2015, Gold Championship of the Junior Fillies at Dubai Int. 2015, Gold Championship of the Junior mare at All Nations Cup 2014 and Gold Championship Junior Female at Menton 2014.

The dam of D Shahla, the aristocratic grey goddess FT Shaella (2007) (Shael Dream Desert × Soul Pretty TGS by Shahllenger) arrived at the Dubai Arabian Stud in year 2007, a beautiful

white mare with elegant gaits and considered one of the pinnacles of DAHS breeding program.

She has been a star since her first day of life, at age of six months she was sold to Dubai Arabian Horse Stud by Haras FT, in Brazil, and has become one of the most successful of her generation. Under the lead of Dubai Stud and Paolo Capecci, she has won the most important titles in the world; the 2010 Aachen Nations Cup and World Cup Filly at the Salon du Cheval in Paris 2012. Competing as a mare, she returned to the ring winning at Menton, in the French Riviera, and at the All Nations Cup, in Aachen, Germany. In December 2012 she was elected World Silver Champion Mare in Paris and with the new year, 2013, FT Shaella captured the Gold Champion Medal at the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Arabian Horse Festival in Saudi Arabia.

The sire of D Shahla, Marajj (2014) is perhaps one of the most talked about stallions of today.

His pedigree speaks for itself. Sired by legendary Marwan Al Shaqab (2000) (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame) and out of the gorgeous Polish bred mare RGA Khouress (1991) (Kouvay Bey x Angophora). Marajj is a tremendous stallion who has it all: type, elegance, class, and movement.

From his beautiful and refined head, to his swan shaped neck, his solid body, he has admiringly followed in the footsteps of all the illustrious ancestors and champion producers in his pedigree.

This charismatic and noble stallion has been at the heart of the breeding program of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi, Albidayer Stud, Sharjah, in the UAE. The dam of Marajj, “RGA Khouress”, a lovely dau-

ghter of Kouvay Bey (1991) (Bey Shah x BA Preciousmemory). She is a classic beauty that is gifting the breed with exquisite individuals one after the other. It is RGA Kouress that adds a second cross to Bey Shah as well as a cross to US National Champion Aladdinn. Her dam, Angophora, sired by the Polish super-sire Eukaliptus and is out of Belbowrie Baskana, a daughter of Bask the stallion known to have changed the face of the breed.

After tracing through the powerful pedigree of D Shihanah, we can only see a promising

star shining bright in the horizon. Her Silver Medal victory at the recent Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse Championship 2019 shows well that she can compete with the top. In the show ring, D Shihanah showed to be a standout, with such a genetic power inside her, D Shihanah was bound to have such an ultra-gorgeous look, and that same beauty, refinement, and correctness and overall qualities that were donated to her by her ancestors that are now enabling her to become Dubai Arabian Horse Stud new show ring sensation.

A strong mare band has always been the main focus of Orrion Farms, allowing them the ability to outcross and breed to many stallions around the world that convey features and qualities which complement their mares. Some of the beautiful newcomers in the barn include an extremely captivating grey filly whose name is Exxaltress. A quick glance at her pedigree will suďŹƒce to understand that this young mare carries in her veins the very best that the Arabian Horse industry has produced in history.

she was crowned Region XII Spotlight Champion Yearling Filly, 2014 Scottsdale International Bronze Mare and 2014 Scottsdale Champion 3 and 4 years old mare.

At her young age, Exxaltress has already captured many US titles, some of which include 2018 Unanimous US National Champion Two Year Old Filly with handler Ted Carson; 2018 Unanimous Champion-Scottsdale Arabian Classic 2-Year Old Fillies, 2018 Champion Mare East Coast Championships and 2019 Scottsdale Reserve Champion Arabian Senior Mare always under the powerful lead of Ted Carson.

We would like to give a special thank to Ted Carson and his wonderful team for their hard work and dedication to this very special filly. We would also like to thank her visionary breeders Frances Bulter, Sybil Collins and Sandra Smith.

Since her childhood, Exxaltress has captured the interest of Capecci Training centers for her extraordinary beauty, a superb combination of the specific conformation of the American bred horse with a pure European type.

After several meetings with the CEO of Dubai Stud, Mr. Mohammed Al Tawheedi and Executive manager Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi, it was decided to arrange a trip to America to finalize the beginning

ment we have partnered with the internationally famous stud farm and are sure to make quite a splash on the 2019 European show season with this stunning mare. A multiple champion and a leading sire of champions, this 14-year-old charismatic bay stallion is one that has transfixed Arabian breeders around the globe since he was a young colt. Bred in the US by Lou and Vicki Doyle of Quail Ridge Arabians, QR Marc is proudly owned by Paul and Ria Gheysens of Knocke Arabians in Belgium. With his greatest son, Equiborn KA, now representing his sire in the United States, 2019 is set to be QR Marc’s greatest year yet.

I think that it is fair to say that QR Marc was always going to captivate people. His pedigree ensured that.

As you look back through his family, some of the world’s best-known and admired names can be found at every step. While Marc is sired by Marwan Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame by Fame VF), one of the most important stallions in modern breeding, it is well worth looking back further – for one horse does not make a line great; rather, it is a combination of many layers.

QR Marc’s sire line is one of the most revered in history, going back to the 1934 straight Egyptian stallion Nazeer (Mansour x Bint Samiha by Kazmeen), a horse whose influence continues to be felt the world over, and not just limited to Egyptian circles, either.

Nazeer’s son, Morafic (ex Mabrouka by Sid Abouhom out of Moniet El Nefous) is influential in QR Marc’s sire line, being the sire of both Shaikh Al Badi (ex

Bint Maisa El Saghira by Nazeer out of Maisa) and also Khofo (ex Nabilahh by Anter out of Farasha), the sire in turn of the exceptional mare Bint Magidaa (ex Magidaa by Alaa El Din out of Maysa). Bint Magidaa was covered by Shaikh Al Badi in 1975 and the following year, Ruminaja Ali arrived in the world. This is a line that is repeated though his dam, with Ruminaja Ali as the great-great-grandsire on both sides of QR Marc’s pedigree. This line is a significant one not only in QR Marc’s sireline but indeed the world, as Ruminaja Ali covered the Ansata Ibn Halima (Nazeer x Halima by Sheikh Al Arab) daughter Bint Deenaa (ex Deenaa by Sameh out of Dahma II) and the result was the fabled 1988 bay straight Egyptian stallion Anaza El Farid. When crossed with the Polish mare Kajora (Kaborr x Edjora by Exelsjor), the resulting colt was the World Champion Stallion Gazal Al Shaqab, a living legend whose sons and grandsons

have gone on to capture the hearts and imagination of the world, while his daughters have charmed and captivated. A further influx of Polish lines through the late mare Little Liza Fame (ex Katahza by Aza Destiny out of Afhar Rahza) followed. Her sire was the US National Champion Fame VF, himself a son of Bey Shah (Bay El Bey x Star of Ofir by Bask Llana) and out of the Crabbet/Gainey mare Raffoleta-Rose (Raffon x Leta Rose by Gamaar). When Little Liza Fame was crossed with Gazal Al Shaqab, the result was the three-time World Champion Marwan Al Shaqab, a horse who continues to captivate at 19 years of age.

To look to QR Marc’s damline, we again see the influence of Ruminaja Ali, this time through his famed son Ali Jamaal (ex Heritage Memory by El Magato out of Heritage Labelle). There is also a further infusion of Polish and Gainey blood through the mare, The Dreamspinner. She is by the Bask grandson Aristo Kossak (Ariston x Four Winds Kalifa by Cytrys) and out of the Naborr granddaughter Myrilinan Acledo (Gai-Adventure x Jem Mar Amyri by Comar Azamyr). Ali Jamaal and The Dreamspinner were bred together in 1991 and the result was the deep bay stallion Magic Dream CAHR, a multiple champion in Canada and the

QR Marc was brought to Europe, and he has been the chief sire at Paul’s own Knocke Arabians ever since.

QR Marc’s first show for Knocke Arabians was the inaugural Al Khalediah Arabian Horse Festival in 2008 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The world paused as this magnificent colt entered the ring, and QR Marc left with what would be the first of many Gold Championship titles.

From that moment, on, his name was synonymous with success.

For the remainder of 2008, QR Marc was campaigned across Europe. He took the Junior Male Championship at the Elran Cup in Belgium and he finished the year as World Reserve Junior Male Champion in Paris.

The next two seasons saw QR Marc’s attentions firmly focused on the breeding barn.

As well as breeding to the famed mares of Knocke Arabians and private breeders, the young stallion was also used at the Polish State Studs of Janów Podlaski and Michalów, and he made a Gold Medal Stallion - World Championship, Dubai 2012 terrific impression on the mares there. Just some of the successful progeny born there include World Champion Marc and breed from him, propelling him on to Zigi Zana (ex Zagrobla by Monogramm out of the global stage in the process. While at Rohara, Zguba), multiple champion Piacenza (ex PriQR Marc also made his debut in the show-ring, mawera by Emigrant out of Premiera), Pogrom earning the titles of 2006 Unanimous Region 14 (ex Petla by Visbaden out of Petra) and Wieza Sweepstakes Yearling Colt and 2006 US NatioMocy (ex Wieza Marzen by Ekstern out of Wiaznals Reserve Champion Breeders Sweepstakes ma), both champions in the US and Europe, and Colt. also Equator (ex Ekliptyka by Ekstern out of EkIt was in Marc’s two-year old year that Paul spozycja), a World Champion and now a double Gheysens first encountered this young colt. Among the QR Marc sons, there is Espressivo (ex Emocja by Monogramm out of Emigracja), Reserve Junior Male Champion at Al Khalediah Arabian Horse Festival and now sold to Iran, where he is making a positive influence on local breeding prgorammes; Emanos KA (ex Emantka by Eukaliptus out of Emanta), Bronze Junior Male Champion at the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championships; Pavorotto KA (ex Palanga), Gold Junior Male Champion at the Deauville Breeders’ Cup Finals and now owned by Rohara Arabians; and the brilliant grey son, Equiborn KA (ex Espadrilla by Monogramm out of Emancja), a double Silver World Champion as a junior among his many titles. Equiborn in now in America at David Boggs’ Midwest Training Center.

The daughters were just as beautiful, including those from the incredible black mare FS Magnums Madonna (Magnum Psyche x Tai Bey Brittney by Bey Shah), whose pedigree complements that of QR Marc so well. Her daughters with Marc include European Junior Female Champion Marc’s Star; Magnum’s Tulip, who has been so very successful in the show-ring; and Magnum’s Rose. Having proved himself as a sire, QR Marc made a highly anticipated return to the show-ring in 2012, an event that happened with the collaboration of Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. QR Marc’s first two shows were in the Middle East – the Abu Dhabi National Championships and the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championships – and, led by Paolo Capecci, he left both shows with the Gold Senior Male title.

From there, Europe called and QR Marc went to the All Nations’ Cup in Aachen, claiming another Gold championship title.

There was just one show left for QR Marc that year, the Paris World Championships where he had been reserve three times. 2012, however, was QR Marc’s

year and he was untouchable – not only did he take the World Champion Stallion title, but his progeny also had an incredible show: Wieza Mocy took the Gold Junior Female World Championship while Equator was named Silver Junior Male World Champion; QR Marc sired five of the World Top Tens in the junior championships, including Knocke Arabians’ own Emerson KA (ex Elerina by Ekstern out of Emantka), the incredible Orfa D’Arab KA, and Espressivo.

QR Marc may not have been shown since then but his progeny continue to excel in the show-ring and they shine for him. At the 2015 Paris World Championships, QR Marc was named Leading Sire, a huge honour for Paul and Ria, and worthy recognition of all that this young stallion has achieved. Equiborn, especially, assisted his sire to this title as he took his second Silver World Championship title, and it is only a matter of time before Equiborn takes a worthy Paris Gold.

The power of QR Marc as a sire has continued to grow, and 2018 was something of a red-letter year for this incredible stallion. From there, the momentum of the QR Marc

title earlier in the year at the All Nations’ Cup in Aachen. Another Emerald J (QR Marc x Emandoria) progeny, this time the daughter Eralda (ex Enezja), was named Gold Junior Female Champion for her owners, Al Shiraa Stables. Finally, Odille KA (Ajman Monisicone x Orfa d’Arab), a QR Marc granddaughter, was named Silver Champion Filly Foal.

Then, it was time for the World Championships in Paris and once more, this continued to be a good show for QR Marc.

Equator was named World Champion Stallion, repeating the title he won as a junior, while Admiraal also took the Gold World Championship title – thus making him QR Marc’s first Eu-

progeny began to gather pace and come the European Championships, he once again proved to be a sired to be reckoned with. Equator took the Gold Senior Male Championship title for Al Sheikh Stud, while Emperor KA (ex Exposita KA) was named Bronze Junior Male Champion for Knocke Arabians. Perhaps the most exciting development at the end of the year was the Equiborn KA is now standing with David Boggs at Midwest Training Center in the United States. To have a QR Marc son of such outstanding quality available to breeders in the country of his sire’s birth is a huge opportunity.

Equiborn KA remains one of the eternal favourites of those early QR Marc progeny, and with him

now being available to a wealth of breeders and different bloodlines is a chance not to be missed.

In addition, Equiborn KA will be shown in the United States, and breeders there are sure to fall in love with him.

It is clear to see that the story of QR Marc is one that continues to grow and grow. The influence of this charismatic stallion is one that travels the world, and his bloodlines are now found everywhere. Yet I feel that we are not yet at the peak, and that QR Marc has yet more brilliance yet to be shared.

And if we look at the meaning of magnificent, we see it is an adjective that means: extremely beautiful, elaborate, or impressive. In the Arabian horse industry, there is a stallion that embodies the word magnificent. As he trots his mane dances to the tune of the wind; his lustrous bay coat plays with the sun’s rays as he strikes the air. His flared nostrils, pricked ears, perfectly dished head and timeless expression stops one in their tracks – his magnificence radiates far beyond the horizon; his name is Kanz Albidayer.

Kanz Albidayer was bred by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi of Albidayer Stud in Sharjah, UAE. From Gazal Al Shaqab to Anaza El Farid to Ruminaja Ali to Morafic, the immortal Marwan Al Shaqab brings with him the highly influential Nazeer sire line. RGA Kouress is a classic beauty that is gifting the breed with exquisite individuals one after the other. It is RGA Kouress’s sire that adds a second cross to Bey Shah as well as a cross to U.S. National Champion, Aladdinn.

Her dam, Angophora, is sired by the Polish super-sire Eukaliptus and is out of Belbowrie Baskana, a daughter of Bask – the stallion known to single-handedly change the face of the breed.

With such a power packed interior, Kanz Albidayer was bound to have such an ultra-gorgeous exterior. And it is that same beauty, correctness, refinement and overall depth of quality that was bestowed upon him by his ancestors that enabled Kanz Albidayer to become a show ring sensation.

Kanz Albidayer was shown extensively as a junior by Scott Allman; together they reached the top and became well known names in the winner’s circle. Kanz Albidayer made his debut in December of 2009 at the Sharjah Arabian Horse Festival where he was named unanimous Gold Champion Junior Colt; and from there, the golds just kept streaming in. Kanz Albidayer started off 2010 at the Ajman National C Show where he was awarded Gold Champion Junior Colt as well as highest scoring horse of the show.

After being named Silver Champion Junior Colt at the Abu Dhabi International Show, Kanz Albidayer went on to win two Gold Junior Colt titles back to back; one at the Sharjah International Show and the other at the Dubai International Show.

After dominating the Middle East, it was time for Kanz Albidayer to take on Europe. At the Mediterranean & Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships, Kanz Albidayer was named Silver Champion Junior Colt.

And later on, at the European Futurity, he was named

Champion Yearling Colt and Overall Futurity Champion. In 2011, Kanz Albidayer went back to the Dubai International show arena to defend his title, but was named Silver Champion Junior Colt. Then in 2012, as a beautiful three year old, he competed in the Middle East for the last time as a junior. He went on to win the Gold Junior Colt title at the Abu Dhabi International Show and earned his third Dubai International Show title after being named Gold Champion Junior Colt.

After such a successful show career, Kanz Albidayer was ready to take on the role that many were waiting for – his role as a sire. The Kanz Albidayer foals are easy to spot in a crowd; their sire stamps them with his signature look; it is a look of luxury, superiority and magnificence.

The foals all have their sire’s extreme face, perfectly shaped ears and expressive eyes.

Where best to start naming the Kanz Albidayer foals then where he was bred. Albidayer Stud bred Kanz Albidayer to a many of their top mares and the results met everyone’s expectations. At the UAE Nationals, the charismatic Burkan Albidayer (x Bidayer) was named Silver National Champion while his gorgeous, bay half sister, Nisreen Albidayer (x Nismat Albidayer) was named Bronze National Champion. Another daughter, Mayahdah Albidayer

(x Maranta) has won titles in many international arenas, while the elegant Kareemah Albidayer flew her sire’s name high in the U.S.A. after being named Scottsdale International Gold Champion Yearling Filly and Las Vegas Silver Champion Yearling Filly.

Two colts, both out of Marwan Al Shaqab daughters, Elle Ammar (x Allamara MA) and El Ettore (x Dena Kay FF) are fine representatives of the ‘Kanz Albidayer brand’ in the U.S. Both have shown successfully in regional arenas and the future can only get brighter. Kanz Albidayer’s most successful foal to date is Luigi (x Lolita). Luigi is an outstanding, bay stallion that was bred by Danielle Saelens in Belgium and is owned by Al Shahania Stud.

As a yearling Luigi was named Gold Champion at the Tulip Cup and at Vichy.

He was named Silver Champion Yearling Colt at the European Championships and Bronze Yearling Colt at the All Nations Cup and World Championships. As a two year old, Luigi added the Silver Champion Colt title from Menton, Aachen, Europe and Paris to his ever growing collection. JL Azamah (x JB Aurora) is a glorious grey filly that was named Gold Champion at the Tulip Cup and Silver Champion at the Scandinavian Open. MT Mantra (x Mandalai Blu FA) is a beautiful bay that was named Bronze Champion at the Strohen and UKIAHS Shows and she was recently sold at the Schoukens Training Centre auction. Seranza (x Evening Serenade) is a sensational Kanz Albidayer daughter that was bred in the U.S. by Michael Byatt and is currently owned by Mohamad Shekh Sliman of Al Sheikh Stud.

She is the reigning 2017 Bronze Champion Yearling Filly at the Las Vegas Arabian Breeders World Cup, Strohen International and All Nations Cup Shows. The latest foal crops by Kanz Albidayer are filled to the brim with superstars. At the Saudi Arabian Horse Festival held in January early this year, three wonderful Arabian specimen all sired by him have literally sent the audiences to franzy.

The pretty chestnut TL Rayana (2018) (x Reema La) was nominated Gold Champion Yearling Filly for the proud of her breeder and owner Abdulaziz Bin Ahmed Alfawzan from Tala Stud. The gorgeous bay colt Kanz LNJ (2018) (Fadya LNJ) was crowned Gold Medal Champion Yearling Colt under the

Next two these little new jewels, the 4 years old grey mare Mayar IV (2015) (x Abha Qawatin) was crowned Gold Champion Senior Mare. She is bred by Ali Bin Hussain Bin Ali Smaa and owned by Fahad Faisal Abdulrhaman Almoammar. With a magnificent exterior, a magnificent show record and foals of magnificent proportions, I can with confidence say that Kanz Albidayer is the epitome of magnificence.

I realised that fact after being invited to be a model at a horse fashion shoot. I had bought a pattern and sewed a dress for myself. Everything was amazing until I tried to get on the horse and realised the skirt was far too small to fit around the horses’ body.

Every equine photo shoot I attended I saw the same problem; the outfits didn’t work once the model mounted the horse. As an artist a n d horse

enthusiast I had images of beautiful outfits in my head that just didn’t exist in a pattern. My desire was to take those images and transform them into amazing outfits for riders. This is where Coffman Couture began.

Designing clothes for a rider has some specific challenges. Besides the skirt size, there are other things that have to be considered in the designing process.

Will the design allow the rider to have a lot of movement? They need to be able to move their arms and twist their body.

And most important the outfit needs to be flattering on the model whether standing or sitting.

I was really inspired by the idea of turning a parachute into a dress. What could be more amazing than a horse galloping with a 12 foot skirt flowing behind? I also love cannibalizing wedding and prom dresses. If you are looking for fabric they are a great place to find it. Never overlook the humble bed sheet! If it inspires, use it.

The bond between horse and rider is difficult to explain to someone who has never been around horses. I want to create clothing that helps capture that feeling. Be inspired, rent the unimaginable!

Who is Abdul Rahman Mohamed Sharif AL Baidhaei?

Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohamed Sharif Al Baidhaei is the Chairman of ARMS Group of Companies, an established, independently owned company that has been operating for over 75 years in the UAE. ARMS Group started with the launch of Dulsco in1953 and under the dynamic leadership of the USA educated Chairman, the group has expanded its reach into a range of new industries including Automotive, Auctioneering, Manufacturing, Sustainable construction, Real Estate and Arabian Horse Breeding.

Mr. Abdul Rahman has a passion for his culture that has driven much of his strive towards breeding excellence and interest in Arabian horses. This passion is what has led to the creation of the award-winning Breeding & Equestrian company Al Jawaher Stud. He continues to lead from the front with his entrepreneurial vision and innovative leadership to continue the success and growth of ARMS

Group and related ventures.

When did you start taking an interest in the Arabian horse breed?

Since childhood Arabian horses have impressed me a lot.

My fondest memories are of those horses owned by H. H Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Founder of Dubai and H.H Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum who held some of the most renowned Arabian stallions in the world.

During my visit to Russia as a businessman, I attended various horse shows and auctions where famous Arabian stallions such like “Pakistan Star” and “Muscat” were on display. The Arabian stallions attracted me and encouraged me to buy first Tursk Arabian Horse from Russia for Jumping.

What made you prefer the Arabian breed to all the other breeds? And how long have you been breeding it?

Arabian horses are a part of Arabic culture and a part of my heritage. The Arabian horse is a breed famous for beauty, stamina, strength and its social characteristics. As one of the oldest horse breeds in the world, Arabian hor-

ses are the main breed to develop all other breeds of horses found around the world.

We have been breeding horses for 25 years, and we have grown our stable to include Egyptian, Polish and Russian breeding horses.

What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you?

For the Arabian horse owner, breeding is different from any other type of breeder.

While others breed their horses for commercial or competitive intents, for me bree-

We own the horses and have been breeding for the last 25 years. Initially, it was just a hobby and personal interest, but 2 years ago I attended the World Cup in Paris.

Looking at the love and enthusiasm of the horse lovers there, the idea of having my own stud emerged. In 2017, we formally established “Al Jawahar Stud”. My motive in starting the company was to develop the Arabian horse breed in the UAE region and bring back the bloodline to its motherland.

Who is the most important breeding stallion at the moment?

All Arabian horses are precious and asking for a favourite is almost impossible. But in the case of stallions, each stallion has its own features and characteristics. New technology is allowing the creation of a variety of stallions all over the world.

Do you also breed Purebred Arabians for show purposes? If so, where did this passion for beauty competitions arise from?

Yes, we certainly breed Purebred Arabians for show purposes. Watching Arabian horses is always captivating because of their features, beautiful characteristics and affection towards humans. It still mesmerizes me to see all this beauty in competition. I also enjoy seeing the enthusiasm

of other spectators at the competitions watching the Arabian horses with such passion and interest.

Do you miss the shows of the past or do you prefer the atmosphere of today’s exhibitions?

Both past and today’s exhibitions have their own charm. In the old times, all interested people gathered together, shared the same love and passion towards the horses, and it used to bring the people of different cultures together to enjoy the exhibition.

In today’s exhibitions, this passion for horses has crossed its border overseas, and people all around the world are connecting with each other to share the moment of love and joy towards the horses.

Today’s exhibitions also give commercial dimension to this business which has added value to people’s passion towards equestrian.

To what extent is ‘marketing’ necessary in the Arabian horse industry?

Marketing, especially the introduction of social media, has brought the world of equestrian pursuits closer together while simultaneously expanding its borders. Marketing can help build awareness for the breeder, can help breeders match mares and stallions and can help willing buyers to find the perfect horse.

Marketing is critical to success in the modern equestrian industry.

What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future?

We want to be a part of H.H. Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Founder of UAE’s vision of bringing Arabian Horse breeds back to motherland where it has its roots. We would like to breed quality rather than quantity, and we want to use the best bloodlines to produce the finest horses in the world.

What are your thoughts on the final results of the Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse Championship?

Abu Dhabi International show this year was a very hard competition because the winning horses at this event and at Dubai show will be competing in Menton, Aachen and Paris.

Some new horses from new farms won in the Championship which is really good for the market where the number of the new owners is highly increased especially in the UAE. For example, our stud won the Gold Champion Medal in the Yearling Filly Category with FAM Donatella.

Abdul Rahman, will you please leave a final message to the readers of AHM? Al Jawahar Arabian Stud is a newcomer to the market with high ambition, dreams and passion. We seek support from all the other market leaders and studs around the world to help us grow and introduce the best bloodlines of Arabian horses to the world.

A

s the battle was raging, King Richard III, almost unarmed, begged: “My Kingdom for a horse.” He would have surrendered all his possessions in order to have a steed that would take him away from the melee in which he would have perished by an enemy’s hand.

On the other hand, there are those who would never barter their Kingdom for a horse, even if they are not inside of a Shakespearean drama. They would not do it because horses are their Kingdom. In the horizon of whom at age 61 is still arguing: «There is no day when I have not thought about my Arabian horses, it is an endless passion», there can only be a life whose notes have the sound of dancing hooves in the arena. And it makes no difference that the arena is that of the International shows or the green pastures of Switzerland. It makes no difference because the horizon stays the same. This woman who from her tender age whispered to the horses, was in fact able to combine her infinite passion for Arabian horses with a desire to turn that love into a long-life commitment first as a breeder and then as a judge.

Renata Schibler was born in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1957. Raised perfectly bilingual speaking Swiss German and Italian, she later graduated in French, Spanish, and English. She is currently, ECAHO Judge/A List, Instructor for Judges´ courses, ECAHO Board Member and President of the Swiss National Association of the Arabian Horse.

Her passion for horses, however, began back in time.

When she was a little girl, she liked to read horsey books and collected horse photos. Her room was hung with horse posters. Of course, Arabian horses were her favourites.

She had her first riding experiences as a small girl, on a part-bred pony, and in the mid-70s, she met a breeder from Alsace where she had the chance to ride purebred Arabians. That’s when her big passion got a hold on her.

At the age 18, she had the opportunity to acquire who would have been the foundation mare of her breeding program, the ethereal grey mare Eicka (1980) (Salem [by Karmin by Witraz] x Etica by Tabal and out of Ariana). The sire of

Shaklan lines and cleverly crossed them with SpanishEgyptians giving rise to what her favourite bloodline still is, the Golden Cross. Her main goal has always been to breed functional horses so not only beautiful horses from a morphological standpoint. For her, a correct horse is the one that combines beauty with a solid and proportionate body and excellent gaits. A correct horse, she argues, is a horse tested under saddle because only under saddle it is possible to see and understand the real nature of the horse.

Renata Eicka, Salem is a beautiful nephew to the Egyptian stallion Hadban Enzahi and a great-grandson to legendary Nazeer.

Eicka’s dam, the Spanish -bred mare Etica, was imported from Spain by the Merz family (Om El Arab), together with Estopa, herself a daughter to Tabal, grandsire to the immortal El Shaklan.

Eicka’s special quality was her versatility. On the one hand, she was a highly successful show horse, winning a lot of Championship titles internationally. On the other hand, she was a highly successful broodmare, giving Renata a number of high quality offspring in her barns. In addition – and that’s something that has always been highly important to Renata – Eicka was a very reliable riding horse. She loved show jumping and foxhunting and made her mark in these disciplines as well, always being ahead of her fellow horses.

Always supported by her beloved husband, Renata based her programme mostly on El

travelled e x te ns ively across the world, visiting many farms to consolidate her know-how. In 1980 she spent six months in England where she learned plenty of things about horses at several breeding farms. She also visited Pat and Joanna Maxwell’s and she got highly inspired by their breeding program.

In 1991, during a show, a very well-known person noticed her when still as a breeder she was participating in many show jumping competitions and her horses wowed the

audiences by collecting numerous international accolades. This person approached her and suggested she became a judge.

“ECAHO needs people like you, Mrs. Schibler.”

And so it was that a busy judge career began for Renata, high in responsibility towards the Arabian breed as a whole, but for sure one filled with many satisfactions and personal acknowledgements.

In 1992, the Acqui Terme show in Italy was the first show Renata had the chance to judge together with Mrs. Izabella Zawadzka from Poland. At that time, most shows were more familiar and not as professional as today’s, she argues. The horse owners would often train and handle their horses themselves, and everything was much more relaxed.

As soon as all the horses are in the ring, Renata always tries to get an estimate of the level of quality in that class. Though the first impression goes a long way for the final score. She watches the walk and tries to register special characteristics of individual horses.

During the individual presentation, she examines the details such as head, neck, body, legs and movements.

To her mind, the points system is much more transparent than the comparative system. With the points system, she remarks, owners can much more easily understand the weaknesses and strengths of their horse, and why a particular horse won or not.

With the comparative system, you need particularly experienced judges because otherwise, you may have a beautiful horse as the winner just because the judge forgot to take the conformational faults into consideration.

The quality of Arabian horses has steadily increased in recent years, ever more approaching the standard of the Arabian Horse.

Renata had the chance to meet many wonderful horses who won her heart.

To name a few to stand for all of these noble creatures, she mentions the mare Pianissima and the stallion Al Lahab, as they were those who especially hypnotised her.

Renata judged all round the world all level of shows. She was also the first non-American judge to judge the Scottsdale Show. Although for her every show is important w h e n judging it.

In addition to being

President of the S w i s s National Association of the Arabian Horse, ECAHO Judge and Instructor for Judges’ courses, Renata Schibler is a very proud mother. Four years ago she came back to live in Basel after having spent 40 years between Lucerne and Lugano. Today, she lives near her two daughters Sandra (34) and (Claudia) (32).

Sandra returned to Switzerland after she had long lived in America to study the behaviour of dolphins. She is currently Lecturer of Marine Biology at the University of Zurich. Claudia is a very successful manager.

With her two daughters Renata shares her passion for the Arabian horse and a family that cultivates this passion can only be a blessed one.

Our Tour in the Middle Eastern countries started in January in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a presentation of AHM Special Middle East issue at the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Festival show held in the beginning of the 2019 show-season. We joined in the Athbah Stud ceremony where we witnessed a spectacular parade of the Saudi Arabian cavalry, enjoyed excellent local food in a truly surreal Arab atmosphere.

The following day we were invited to the Open day organized by Al Milad Stud where we watched a presentation of many wonderful Arabian specimens including World Champion Alexxanderr and International Champion Eden C both owned by Alsayed Stud. Next, came International Champion ES Harir’s turn owned by Al Saqran Stud in Kuwait.

Our journey continued to Kuwait to attend the Kuwait International Arabian Horse Festival, where we met many friends and breeders and visited some of the many local farms around the city. On the occasion of the eighth edition of the International Arabian Horse Championship in Kuwait, we came across Mr. Emad Alkandari and the other

breeders from Al Safir Stud, a small breeding farm located near Kuwait City. We wanted to interview them for the column that Arabian Horse Magazine dedicates, in each edition, to those people who have consecrated their lives to breeding a noble creature such as the Arabian horse.

Our 25-day journey went on throughout the desert and ended up in the United Arab Emirates at the Abu Dhabi International show. From there, some of our Team members travelled down to Doha, Qatar, to take part in the 28th edition of Qatar International Championships.

Since the early days, we realized that this experience would not only met all of our expectations, but it would have gone even further, managing to amaze us despite we knew already quite a lot about this mesmerising land. What immediately impressed us - and what is still engraved in our hearts on our return to Italy, was the Arabian people, especially our breeder friends: nice and welcoming people beyond imagination. They see the guest, especially when coming from another country, as an opportunity for comparison and cultural enrichment.

his Festival is a celebration of the Arabian Horse and has been put into operation to uphold and develop the equestrian disciplines in which this extraordinary animal competes. This quality and horse lover ‘paradise’ is held under the patronage of His Royal Highness, Prince Khaled Bin Sultan Bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. When you speak about Prince Sultan, you speak about a once-in-a-lifetime horseman.

He is a strong and truly special man.

He is a myth. He is indeed the real Arabian myth. He is not only Sultan Alkahir (Sultan of Charity).

Prince Khaled is also an unparalleled political leader, Sultan of generosity for the entire humankind and his beloved nation. His stud farm is one of the best equipped in the whole of the Gulf area. Stretching over more than 400 hectares, Al Khalediah Stables (AKS), have a fully equipped internal equine clinic in which the experienced and well trained staff has obtained a considerable number of medical successes, ranging from repro-

duction to embryo management methods.

This state-of-the-art hospital with highly specialized staff is also available to breeders.

Prince Khaled’s boundless passion for the Arabian horse, which has ‘contaminated’ the entire Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, led to the organization of the Festival also this year, and it opened its doors in January 2019 in the headquarters of His Highness’s farms in Tebrak city, west of Riyadh.

The Festival managed to capture the interest of all the experts and specialists of the breeding industry who all gathered to witness a very well-organized show with a significant attendance of spectators. A lofty number of guests from all over the world flocked there thanks to the kind-heartedness of Prince Khaled who spared no expenses in making this competition etched in everybody’s mind and very successful. The response from breeders was really good, including many horsewomen who had to make some minor outfit changes but, most of them, ap-

preciated the invitation and realized that Saudi Arabia is beyond doubt a magic land that is worth discovering. Shuttle buses were available to guests for the transfers. During these journeys they could admire some exclusive landscapes and the desert in its entire splendor, with lights that, depending on the time of the day and unlike any other place in the world, constantly changed colors and created a surreal atmosphere. Saturday, January 26th hosted the Championship classes.

Prince Sultan Arabian Horse Festival definitely lived up to the expectations and was truly beyond belief. We would like to congratulate and praise the Organization, Makshaff Services Ltd. led by the event manager Mr. Salah Al Ali who worked hard on this majestic event. The Saudi TV made a live broadcast of the show, which was attention-grabbing right until the end of the Final Championship.

Also this year the show could be seen live via the Web and journalists could do very good thanks to a fully operational modern media center. The Festival was a true gala for Arabian horse enthusiasts – an international event on a grand scale. Arabian Horse Magazine highly recommends not missing its next edition in year 2020 again in the genuine homeland of the Arabian horse.

t the end of the 2019 Prince Sultan Arabian Horse Festival, we were invited to the private ceremony organised by Athbah Stud owned by Abdulaziz bin Ahmad bin Abdulaziz Al-saud, where the most wonderful cavalry from Saudi Arabia was on display. Members of the cavalry wore the dishdasha, the white keffiyeh and the qutrah (the traditional Arabic headdress). Seeing them arrive and parading with marvellous Arabian steeds was an extraordinary vision. An explosive mix of power, bravery and elegance.

Another highlight of this fabulous evening was the camels parade with their fancy riders. They came in all sorts, sizes and colours. There were white ones and

even camel-coloured ones. All that splendour went right through us and felt so good.

We were offered typical local foods, drinks and Arabian tea. We ate a lot of peanuts and seeds of local plants. Great cushions were elegantly placed all around the place and some of us literally fainted on those soft sits. Meanwhile, authentic traditional melodies and rhythms with original Arabian music were being played all along the party. Genuine Middle Eastern percussion instruments created the groove that accompanied folk dances and songs, which added some extra glamour and sparkle to the evening.

n February 1st, 2019, we had the honour of being invited to the Open Day organised by Milad Equine Centre in Saudi Arabia. When we got there, the main entrance was beautifully decorated, local music was lovely, the whole atmosphere was almost surreal.

It was possible to visit their stables and watch all the beautiful horses that are housed in the Centre. To date, Milad is the first professional Training Center in Saudi Arabia for Arabian horses. We also had the chance to admire their first-class reproduction and embryo-transfer facilities.

The presentation began with a stunning stallion that is now standing at Al Milad stud, International Champion ES Harir by Aj Dinar, owned by Al Saqran Stud in Kuwait. It went on with many beautiful foals born in 2019 and many other important individuals among which it is worth mentioning World Champion Alexxanderr by Excalibur EA owned by Alsayd Stud, and part of his wonderful progeny.

Afterwards, we could appreciate the stunning International Champion Eden C by Enzo, and a collection of beautiful mares and their foals including Delight’s Divah RB by Ajman Moniscione, Haifa ED by Kahil al Shaqab, LR Era De Excalibur by Excalibur EA. All of them are under the ownership of Alsayed Stud.

After the parade we were offered a fabulous dinner with luscious local food.

The evening was organized by Adulaziz Al-Tamimi and Nasir Abdullatif Al-Fozan, but the impeccable presentation of the horses was entrusted to talented handler Arthur Nascimento.

It was an exceptional evening with many internationally renowned guests, local music and Arabian tea. Milad Equine Center is a place where dreams come true - and it captivates your dreams. Thank you once again to the entire Team, especially Mr. Adulaziz Al-Tamimi and Nasir Abdullatif Al-Fozanfor letting us a part of that way. We cannot wait to see what 2019 still has to bring.

K

uwait’s growing presence as an international destination for Arabian horses has always received great support from all over the world. Held under the patronage of H.H. Emir of Kuwait Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, the 8th Kuwait International Arabian Horse Championship was attended by a fair number of people who represented every major continent with involvement in Arabian horses, but also guests and tourists from Europe to see horses of the finest purebred Arabian breed competing for various prizes and recognition. This gave the finishing touch to a really well organized and time-managed show. As many as seven judges were called to manage a competition that appeared fascinating just by reading the

program. They were, in order: Mr. Koenraad Detailleur (Belgium); Mr. Nashaat Hegazi (Egypt); Mr. Robbie Den Hartog (Netherlands); Mrs. Ann Norden (Sweden); Mr. Thomas Stohler (Switzerland); Mrs. Anna Stojanowska (Poland) and Mrs. Michaela Weidner (Germany).

They were delighted by the overall quality of the horses they witnessed during the two-day event, and declared they had enjoyed judging and working with the organizing team of the show and expressed their respect for the Arabian horse breeders and owners in Kuwait for their enthusiasm and passion. Visitors from the USA, Italy, France, Poland, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, the U.A.E., and Saudi Arabia attended the show, enjoyed Kuwait ho-

spitality and watched a beautiful even, which was only made possible by the admirable cooperation of the breeders and horse owners who entered their valuable Arabians for the show, and with the generous support of H.H. the Emir of Kuwait, Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, the Hunting & Equestrian Club’s board of Directors as well as numerous sponsors. ello. Thank you very much for accepting our interview. Let’s start from the very beginning.

Who is Emad Alkandari? When did you start taking an interest in the Arabian horse breed? What made you prefer the Arabian breed to all the other breeds?

And how long have you been breeding it?

First, I would like to welcome you. Emad AlKandari is the owner of Al Safir Stud. I started taking an interest in Arabian horses since I was young. In fact, I thought about establishing Al Safir Stud to start my breeding program of Arabian horses back in 2009 when I bought my first Arabian mare just for riding her. Proudly, this year I’ll celebrate the 10th anniversary of the actual establishment of the Stud.

What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you? And which are the bloodlines mostly bred at your Stud?

To me, breeding means carefully selecting a mare with specific traits and finding a suitable stallion with the aim of producing the perfect offspring. Bloodlines mostly bred at Al Safir Stud are: Straight Egyptian (DAHMEH SHAHWANIEH - BINT EL BAHREIN Family; JELLABIET FEYSUL-SAKLAYAH JIDRANIYAH) and Pure Bred.

What specific qualities or skills do you need to become a good breeder?

The specific skills and qualities you need to possess to become a good breeder are patience and knowledge.

Unlike purchasing and instantly owing a champion horse, breeding is an investment that requires time, energy, and resources to get a satisfactory result. This process of breeding also based on different opinions of well-experienced breeders, as the acquisition of advice from breeders with experience that exceeds your own, enhances your ability to choose the right pair for breeding. Breeding requires the courage to experiment and the experience in selection while never losing sight of proper taste.

When was AL SAFIR STUD created? What’s your typical day at the breeding farm?

As mentioned, before Al Safir Stud was established in 2009.A typical day at the Stud begins as soon as I arrive. The first task I tackle is the routine check upon the horses in their stables. Next, I ask the Groomer about their food and their health. Later on, we check the new offspring to see how our breeding program is going and the result we obtained from our efforts during the season. After that, we gather up and discuss our plans for further breeding, and which stallions will be cho-

sen for breeding next season, also which horses will participate in competition next season.

Mohammed PBUH said, “The horse is tied in its good intentions to the Day of Resurrection”.

What’s your relationship with your horses? Is there any horse holding a particular place in your heart?

Why? I consider my horses as part of my family. Horses are noble and play a crucial part in our culture and history.

Which of your mares do you think is the most important? Why? All my mares are important to me but, in my opinion Exposita K.A. by QR Marc and out of Ekina

by Ekstern is the most important because she is the most successful horse in the shows, a good reproducer and has wonderful pedigree.

How would you advise a young person eager to undertake a breeder career?

It is important for a young breeder to determine

the purpose of starting this career and the field they wish to delve into. I would also advise them to consult with former educators with expertise in the field as well as deepen their knowledge about some of the breeding lines. In addition, I would encourage them to attend competitions and horse Studs and talk to breeders with professional experience. Finally, the most important tip that I would really like to give them, from my experience, is to pick up where others ended as it will save them a lot of time and allow them to get the result that they wish.

To what extent is ‘marketing’ important in the Arabian horse industry?

Marketing is very important in the ‘Arabian’ horse industry. Just like this dedicated Arabian Horse Magazine, other media including the internet and social media outlets allow horse enthusiasts to connect and increase the horse industry’s popularity.

What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future?

I hope to achieve a production that suits the ideal image that represents the noble Arabian horse. My greatest ambition is for my breeding program to produce world champion horses.

How do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’ in our modern day Arabians?

It is very important to me when breeding an Arabian horse for a beauty competition, that he doesn’t lose his original traits such as courage, speed and endurance, over his beauty aspects; meaning that they maintain a strong and healthy body while being beautiful. On the other hand, some breeders are producing beautiful offspring that have some certain functional limitations.

If you could name one Arabian that comes the closest to your ideal, which one would that be today?

It is difficult to narrow it down, there is more than one horse that I consider ideal, such as RFI Farid, FA El Rasheem, Shanghai EA, EKS Alihandro and QR Marc etc.

Do you also breed Purebred Arabians for show purposes? If so, where did this passion for morphology competitions arise from?

Yes, I do breed Purebred Arabians for show purposes.

My passion began after I attended the first competition in 2008 here in Kuwait. Since then, my passion has only increased as I continue to attend local and international competitions.

Do you miss the shows of the past or do you prefer the atmosphere of today’s exhibitions?

Everything has its own time, but today’s exhibitions are more creative and attract a worldwide audience.

What is it you’d like to still experiment at this stage of your career in the Arabian horse industry?

At this stage, I am looking forward to introducing bloodlines that I have not bred in the past in the breeding program.

bu Dhabi, the sophisticated and modern capital of the U.A.E. presents a fascinating mixture of tradition and progress. With some history rich in tradition dating back to 3000 B.C., Abu Dhabi maintains a more distinctly Arabian ambiance than glitzy Dubai. The strong dominant white color of its territory, sunny blue skies, traditional landscape offer a glimpse into the Bedouin life along with the Women’s Craft Centre, the particular design inspired by the Arabian heritage and the Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

From February 9th-12th the capital city hosted the 2019 Abu Dhabi International Arabian Horse Championship, one of the most prestigious beauty competitions in the world. Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nayan, the Horse fair is much more than a prestigious show for the Arabian horses. Over five days there are auctions and judging in various classes cul-

minating in the highly anticipated championship honors and special awards.

The Show was governed by the EAHS Rules and Regulations established by the Emirates Arabian Horse Society that for the technical part could rely on the competence of Show manager Mr. Essam Abdulla Al Hameerie, Mr. Adnan Sultan Al Nuaimi and Mr. Mohamed Al Harbi.

It was a real pleasure for Arabian Horse Magazine to be present at such an extraordinary event.

The Higher Organizing Committee was composed by: Mr. Adnan Sultan Al Nuaimi, Mr. Essam Abdalia Al Hameerie and Mr. Mohamed Ahmed Al Harbi.

The results of the preliminary categories can be seen on the website of the Emirates Arabian Society, www.eahs.org, featuring also the scores given by the various judges. Only the top two winners of each category were able to compete in the final championship and fight for the three sought after medals.

The Final Championships were a pretty emotional moment for all given the top horses that came this far.

has also founded the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club that today is a major source of pride of everyone in the country. Its facilities represent a unique architectural masterpiece that is in continuous and accelerated development through the efforts and guidance of the visionary leadership of Tamim and, more recently, of Sheikh Mohamed Bin Faleh Al Thani. Both have spared no effort in bringing Qatar on equal footing with the world’s leading countries in terms of equestrian sport. The country hosts numerous regional and international equestrian events such as the ‘Qatar International Horse Festival’. The latter combines the Qatar International Show and the Qatar Egyptian Event and, this year, has been held around half of February. Governed by the Constitution and Rules of the European Conference of Arab Horse Organizations (ECAHO), this much-awaited Event is an International (CaAHM | 174

tegory A) Show organized and supervised by Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) and chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Faleh Al Thani.

A total of seven referees oversaw this year’s competition. from Italy, Denmark, and the UK. The Organising Committee of the championship awarded top prizes. First place got QR40,000, second place got QR30,000, third place got QR25,000. A large number of horse studs took part in this year’s competition. We did not believe that such a young horse could have had so much potential in breeding and shows – so young and already so famous. We refer here to Espressivo KA by QR Marc and Emocja, bred by Mr. & Mrs. Paul and Ria Gheysens from Knocke Arabians in Belgium.

The most recent show results of his progeny have been achieved in Iran in the show made in August for his daughter Paradis KA (2013). She was nominated as the Gold Champion filly at the Int. B Show in Tehran. Out of Proxima White (ex Palanga by Ekstern) Paradis KA is from Expressivo’s first foal crop born at Knocke Arabians. She is a lovely bay, very showy, and with a pretty short head.

Photography is the tool they can better control to bring to light the inner dimension of the Arabian horse. It does not replicate reality but produces new knowledge. In this process they are only a means, they try to minimize or even cancel their presence as much as possible, because they know that their judgment is limited when compared to any form of artistic expression.

A shared deep love for the Arabian horse has often acted like a catalyst in the creation of new ‘loves’ and new couples within the international Arabian horse community. A perfect example of this, it’s the couple formed by handler Tony Bauwens and his girlfriend handler Kelly Delen. Arabian horse wanted to interview both of them to find out what are in their opinion the basic ingredients for a satisfactory and long-term couple life...

Hello Tony, Hello Kelly! When and where did you first meet?

We had already met a few times during the show-season in Europe, but it wasn’t until we saw each other gain during the shows in Kuwait that we felt a real connection.

Tony, how did you declare your love to your girlfriend?

Your readers might be disappointed but our relationship didn’t start like they do in the movies. It wasn’t a “Love at first sight - kind of thing”, whereby I declare my love and sweep the woman of her feet. People who know me, can tell you I’m not that type of guy. But sometimes you just meet someone in life and in that initial moment you don’t have any idea about how important that person is going to be to you. In the end that’s the best how I can describe the start of our adventure.

Kelly, what was your first reaction?

I cannot agree more with Tony. I feel like in life, and for sure in this business, people try to plan their life carefully, but sometimes you just stumble. You’re not really sure when it happens and there’s no “key moment”, you can only hope that the other person is feeling the same.

What’s the best trip the two of you have ever taken together?

Due to our job and lifestyle we are able to travel the world together. That’s why it’s difficult to pick up one exact trip as we have had so many great moments in sharing our passion. If we do need to pick up one particular moment… well, we did have a lovely time, 2 years ago, in Ajman UAE, when we went there for a short holiday.

What are in your opinion the most important elements for a successful relationship today?

Every relationship is different but we think communication and acceptance of each other are key elements in any relationship. If you can not be authentic with your partner than you cannot pursue the emotional connection that founds a good working relationship.

Men are from Mars and women from Venus? Do you agree?

Well, we would not go that far, but it’s true that men differ from women, of course this is different for every single person and relationship. But in the end those differences are what makes life so interesting.

Tony, how does it feel to be one of the most respected ‘trainers/handlers’ of Arabian horses on the international scene?

I never really stop thinking about these kind of things. I just feel blessed that I have such an amazing family, who made it possible for me to chase my dreams. And I am grateful that I can go to work everyday with a smile on my face, doing something I am so ignited about. All the rest is just a bonus.

So, where does this passion you both share for Arabian horses come from and what role has it played in building your relationship?

Tony: For my 16 th birthday, my father allowed me to buy a horse. We looked at a variety of different breeds, but in the end my eye fell on the Arabian horse. And so we bought our first Arabian filly. With my new addition at home, I became more and more intrigued with these beautiful animals and the showing. So, I decided I wanted to learn everything there is to know about them. That’s how I met Mrs. Christine Jamar (Jadem Arabians, Belgium). She recognized my eagerness and dedication and took me under her wing even though I had no experience.

She is for sure one of the biggest influences, one that got me where I am today and I will never take that for granted. Thanks to her, I am living my dream life. The fact that I also found the love of my life in this business is just the cherry on the cake.

Kelly: Already as a toddler, I was utterly besotted with horses. I would walk up to them in the fields, to feed them with carrots and pet them. The pony rides at our village Fair would always turn out into a nightmare for my mom, with her trying to persuade me to “Get my buttom of that pony and go home”!

So on my 6th birthday, my stubbornness finally paid off… And I got to have my first riding lesson.

But it wasn’t until I was thirteen, that I encountered my first Arabian horse.

A beautiful snorting and blowing, 2 year old colt, that just took my breath away. Until this day I still have goosebumps when I think about the first time I saw him prancing through the field. For me, AS Sinans Pasha son is the beginning of everything.

What is your daily routine at your Arabian Training Center?

All our days look a bit different, due to the traveling. But at the farm we start in the morning with feeding and putting the horses out in the field.

All our horses go out everyday, if the weather allows it. After breakfast the horses that need to be worked are either lunged or go in the indoor walker, depending on their individual training schedule. In the afternoon, the horses who did not go out yet, get their relaxing time in the field. Meanwhile we focus us on the schooling of the show horses. Around 18:00h the horses come back inside, for their last feeding of the day. By then it’s time for our own dinner, to get some energy again to start riding the horses which are meant for the saddle classes.

How has the Arabian horse enriched your lives? What is your relationship with horses?

The Arabian horse plays a key part in our lives. Living on the farm, means that we literally eat, breath and sleep with the equestrian life. This makes that we, as in most training center, build a close connection with our horses.

Kelly, do you have one ‘loving horse’? If yes, can you tell us something about this ‘experience’?

I get quite easily attached to the horses that arrive on the farm, every horse that arrives feels a bit one of your own. Of course the ones you start riding, you get a deeper connection with, due to the time you spend on the saddle. But if I have to choose one favorite, it would for sure be Rasha Albidayer (FA EL RaAHM | 227

Tony and Kelly, as you both are handlers, what are in your opinion the most important qualities to become a good trainer/handler? Do you train horses for morphological competitions? If so, where does this passion spring for?

Be quiet, calm and present in the moment when you work with horses, whether this is lunging, riding, schooling, or just bringing horses to the field.

To what extent is ‘marketing’ relevant in this sector?

Marketing is always a key element for any successful business, this is not different for the Arabian horse industry. Due to social media, it’s just so much easier to get your message out in the world. It brings marketing right into your very living room and that’s the beauty of it.

What are your future plans?

The most important for us, is keeping on track with our clients and trying to reach our goals together and enjoy these beautiful animals. But also for our farm we have big plans, like installing an aqua-trainer and getting our own breeding facility. The ultimate goal is of course to compete in Paris.

Who is Andreas Birkenseer? How did this passion you have for the Purebred Arabian horse begin? And to what extent has this love you have acquired for the Arabian horse affected your life?

I am Andreas Birkenseer, 34 years old, born in Germany, in beautiful Bavaria and my passion is Arabian horses.

When I was 17 years old, a friend of mine had a few horses of his own and I just wanted to try riding one like a cowboy. My first impression – it`s amazing! How can such a big and strong animal be so gentle and connected to a human? I was really impressed.

Just a few weeks later a mare crossed my way: Ameera. A 5 years old grey Messaoud daughter out of Polish lines with already 5 different owners in her young life. Needless to say, she was a difficult horse. However, I bought her …And she really gave me a long hard time. But after a while, I don`t know how, I found the key for her and suddenly she started really doing everything for me! Such a strong connection is typical with Arabian horses. When you get their trust, they will do everything for you. There it started with the “Arabitis” and my life changed.

I visited many shows just to see all this famous horses and my desire to become a professional handler was growing more and more.

I met Regina Wifling from Hamadi Arabians, who always supported and believed in me. She introduced me to Gerald Kurtz and I went to his place and he taught me more about professional training. Later, I got the opportunity to work for Frank Spönle where I have been for the past few 5 years.

Besides yourself, is there anyone else in your family that loves horses? Or are you the only ‘case of Arabitis ‘in this respect?

In my family I´m the only one who is into horses.

I am the only case of “Arabitis”. But I have to say that especially my father always supported me in what I was doing.

Have you got your own Training Centre? If so, how did it all start? What was your main thought behind it and what made you believe it was going to be a successful Training Centre?

End of 2018 I stopped working for Frank Spönle and moved back home in Bavaria. I have just come back from the Middle East and now I will start working on my own training centre. The location is the farm from Hamadi Arabians. It`s a very nice place for horses with great people there.

Gerard Patty once said to me: “Work twice harder than the others and the success will come” …That`s what I am going to do.

But it takes time. It needs to be the right time.

Now I am sure it`s my time! I have great people around me and I cannot wait to stand on my own legs.

Who was your mentor in this project?

There was not directly one mentor in this project.

There were many people who pushed me already since a while in this direction.

What’s your daily routine at the Training Centre?

In the morning it starts with checking and feeding the horses. One part of the horses goes to the pastures and paddocks; the other part of horses

starts with their personalized conditioning plan. Then exchange the horses from outside and work the second group. In the afternoon it`s usually time for schooling, clipping and grooming.

What do the words ‘training/handling’ mean to you?

First of all, it means to me that you have to take care of your horses.

Prepare them good physically, grooming- and schooling-wise and also mentally.

Handling means to me to show the people the best side of your horse.

Is there any particular symbiosis between a trainer/handler and his horse?

If you train a horse, you spend a lot of time together. You invest a lot of time, sweat and tears. But then, when this special moment comes, where they start working together with you, when they want to do it right for you, that`s the moment where I really enjoy what I am doing.

If you go to the show and the horse does it good, because he/she enjoying it and he/she is happy with you as a handler, that`s exactly the particular symbiosis between a trainer and his horse.

In your opinion, what are the qualities needed to become a good Arabian horse trainer/handler?

Passion, feeling and don`t be shy to work hard.

Of all the horses you have been training, which is the one you had to bear a greater commitment with?

I would say Wadad Zamani from Nayla Hayek. She is just a great horse!

Who/What got you into morphology competitions? Do you remember your first show? Is there any victory you feel particular close to?

Definitely, it was the All Nations Cup in Aachen 2005 that inspired me a lot.

My first own show was in 2007 at the ‘Kauper Platte’ in Germany with a nice bay mare. Her name was Safar Mahdiva. Though we both

Galinka el Sheik at the Aachen Nationals 2016. He is a Ch el Brill son and a very gentle stallion. Before we entered the arena in Aachen I told him: “Sheiky, if you are doing good, you can retire”.

We entered the arena and he did his best show of the whole season! Snorting and blowing, moving like hell! We got a few 20´s for movement and won the class. In the championship we ended up Silver, but at this moment he was my number one!

After this show he retired and now he is enjoying his life.

Do the most deserving horses in terms of today’s standards really win?

Today, the quality at the big shows has reached a level which is unbelievable. Sometimes, it`s just the daily mood of the horse what makes the little

difference. To choose the right one is not always easy for the judges. But in my opinion in general the best horses win.

What differences can you spot between today’s Arabian horses and those in the past?

I think in the past you could win a show with a good horse. Nowadays you need to have an extraordinary horse to win. The breeding standard is really high and the horses are almost perfect.

How important are the Fairs of Arabian horses?

The Fairs are important because that`s the place where you see all the horses by close and compared to each other. It`s different if you see pictures, a video, or if you see the horse in real.

What advice would you give to those who want to become a handler of Arabian horses?

If you want to become a handler, make sure that you

really love to work with horses. Because it´s a long way and you will spend most of the time from your life with these incredible animals. If you are sure about this fact, go for it.

What are your future plans?

Building a solid private base, never stop learning, being a good person, a great horseman and having a successful training centre.

My name is Jordan Parr and I am currently a student at ‘Cal Lutheran University’ studying Psychology. I mostly work for a Shipping Insurance doing marketing, but I also run a few other social media accounts for people in the Arabian Horse world. I was born in Southern California on February 13th.When I was 4 years old I moved to Hidden Hills where I met Nedra Johnson who truly introduced me to the best thing that has ever happened to me: the Arabian horse. She had a riding program that was mostly retired Arabian and Half Arabian show horses. I remember the first day I rode with her. I was 6 years old and she put me on an older horse named Poetka. Her nickname was Poe. I was a little nervous at first but once I got on Poe’s back, I realized that she knew what she was doing more than I did and she just made me feel like “Don’t worry. I got you”. From then on out I became horse crazy. Every weekend I would get up super early on

Ned would always have something fun planned: swimming in Malibu Creek with the horses, going running through Ahmanson which was the huge ranch next to our community, or if it was really hot, we would ride around bareback and finger paint our horses. When I think about the most valuable lessons I learned from pony club and Ned, the first ones that come to mind are patience and the ability to just stop for a second and really truly see how amazing the Arabian horse is. I had ridden other horses before, but I never could understand what people were talking about when they said that they have such a deep connection with their horse until I myself could say I had that too. se named Gracie. She was considered a little more “spirited” than others. I still to this day believe that Gracie is my soul horse. She taught me so much more than just to ride. She taught me patience, kindness, a little sass, and most importantly how to love unconditionally.

Don’t get me wrong, Gracie and I had some days where we didn’t see eye to eye, but it was mostly her trying to make me stop being a bratty kid. I continued riding for years and eventually started showing and I now own a Half Arabian Country English Horse, Victim of Love, that I still have and love so much. But where I truly learned how amazing and loving the Arabian horse is was with Nedra. Nedra then introduced me to April Visel. The most incredible horse photographer I’ve ever seen. She sees beauty in horses many cannot, and because of that takes unbelievably amazing photographs. If I wanted to try and describe the Arabian Horse to someone and try to sum it up in a few words

I would never be able to do it justice. Instead, I show non-horse people April’s photos and they can see exactly how I feel about these amazing creatures. I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of these photoshoots and have beautiful pictures I can look at for the rest of my life. I wish more people and kids had the opportunities that I have had to grow and learn how truly magnificent horses are and all that they have to offer this world. As many people know horses are very expensive, so my friend Katie and I have started a lifestyle brand called K & J Lifestyle where we sell t-shirts and give a percentage of the proceeds to our favorite non- profits: Ride to Fly and Omega Horse Rescue!

I’ve loved and ridden horses all my life, but my love for the Arabian horse started at about 12 years old. I was introduced to the Arabian breed at St. Croix Training Center in Hudson WI. I rode every week with a few friends of

mine for about a year until I decided it was time to own one of my own. Being around the horses was an escape for me.

I was able to get away from all the negativity that was happening in my life. It was a breath of fresh air. There was never a dull moment being around the horses.

Whether it was just grooming them, riding or just loving on them. Many years went by showing in the performance and halter ring. Each year learning new things and meeting amazing people.

My love for Arabians taught me responsibility, compassion, discipline and strength, but also gave me true happiness.

I’ve met incredible people that have taught me more than I could

explain. I met the love of my life through the Arabians, whose love for the Arabians is stronger than anyone I know. Our now 1 year old son shares the love for horses just as much as we do.
