MOMENTS & PEOPLE
An Interview by Sonia Smaldone
From the moment you step into Dejan Zdravkovic’s studio, you are enveloped in a warm, earthy ambiance, filled with the scent of fresh sawdust and polished wood. The walls are adorned with his stunning wooden sculptures, each piece telling a story of craftsmanship and passion.
Dejan’s attention to detail is nothing short of astounding. Each head of the Arabian horse he carves reflects not only his skill but also his deep understanding of the animal’s anatomy and spirit. He spends countless hours studying and sculpting these magnificent creatures’ unique heads for breeders and lovers of the breed. This blend of modern artistry and traditional craftsmanship sets his work apart and speaks to a universal audience. By exploring Dejan’s work, we will embark on a journey that celebrates art, nature, and the incredible talent of this Serbian artist.
Who is Dejan Zdravkovic, exactly? Please introduce yourself to our Arabian horse community. Tell us about yourself, your native country, your family, and your university studies.
I was born in Svilajnac, a small town in central Serbia. I graduated from agricultural high school and then enrolled in the Faculty of Agriculture. Soon after that, I changed my mind and enrolled in the Faculty of Fine Arts, where I graduated. They noticed my talent for drawing and sculpting at a very early age. My grandfather was a carpenter, so I developed an interest in woodworking at a very early age. I liked to use various tools and loved the smell of wood, so I wanted to be a carpenter. That’s probably why I work with wood mostly. My wife and I have been working together for years. She is working on our social media account and selling the sculptures. Also, we have a two-year-old girl and a baby boy.
Why did the Arabian horse become so central to your art at some point in your career? Do you have any experience with horsemanship?
I used to make all kinds of ordered and original sculptures for years. Horses became very sought after about a year ago. It all started with the original sculptures during the coronavirus pandemic. There were no more commissioned sculptures, and I finally started making what I wanted. I no longer had to please anyone. I was working every day, without thinking about whether anyone would buy what I made. My wife started posting my sculptures on Instagram. At first, there were mostly ravens and distorted human faces. Later, I sold a few of my original horses. The more I looked at them, the more I loved them, and they attracted me more and more. Soon after that, people started ordering custom sculptures based on the photos of their horses. I could say that I didn’t choose them, but they chose me. As soon as we made an Arabian, more owners started ordering their Arabian horses.
Why do you focus exclusively on Arabian horses’ heads to inspire and guide your artistic interpretation? Which material and tools do you use the most? Why?
Because they are beautiful, they have something special and aristocratic in them; somehow, they are naturally highly stylised and utterly different from other breeds of horses, just as greyhounds are different from other dogs. I mostly use wood, specifically walnut,
which is also a special type of wood that is a shame to waste on furniture. I try to use simple hand tools as much as possible, somehow you can’t feel that kind of spontaneity with any modern tool. Specifically, I like to sculpt with an axe and chisels, so that each sculpture is clean and special. I never wanted my sculptures to look like dolls. Of course, I also make sculptures from other materials, such as fibreglass, and it is also possible to order a sculpture in bronze.
Can you briefly describe the head sculptures you have chosen to present for this interview?
All of these sculptures were custom-made, based on the photos of the horses. One of them was ordered by a wonderful person as a memorial to a recently deceased horse. Through working with people, I began to experience their losses and realised that a horse is not just an ordinary animal. For most people, it is a family member. Another piece was ordered as a birthday gift, and the other one was a prize for winning a competition. It’s an absolute honour to be a part of such important moments in other people’s lives.
If your horse-head sculptures could talk, what would they say to you?
I don’t know! I never thought about it! Maybe they would tell me to take a vacation sometime!
Are you working on any new project, piece or exhibition?
Of course, I’m always working on something new. I try not to show it until I’m delighted. I like to surprise you from time to time with some new ideas. I don’t think there will be an exhibition soon. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to dedicate myself to it, and I can’t even collect more than a few sculptures because everything I make is sold as soon as it’s made.
Have you earned a full-time living from your creative work?
Yes, I can say that I am. It is a family business, and we make a living from it. Of course, I don’t do everything by myself. My wife does a considerable part of this work,
and we are a well-knit team. We have divided the work so that I am in charge of sculpting and my wife is in charge of social media. I want to encourage all those who think you can’t make a living from all this. I will tell you that you can. It’s far from an easy job, and the competition is fierce, but you can still make a very nice living from it.
What are the best ways for potential collectors to reach you? How did you build your audience on social media?
The easiest way to contact us is through our Instagram account or our website. When it comes to building an audience, we focused more on the quality of our content rather than the number of followers. For the past five years, we’ve aimed to post almost every day, continuously improving our posts to make them more engaging. We film the sculpting
process and take photos of the finished sculptures. We don’t follow trends; for instance, we only use music that we enjoy, and we create unique posts that we haven’t seen from others. Over time, this approach piqued people’s interest, and one of our videos went viral on Instagram, leading to increased demand for my horse sculptures. Ultimately, building an audience requires a well-coordinated team (usually just two people), a lot of hard work, and a bit of luck to reach the right audience.
Is there a question you’ve been hoping a journalist would ask you as a sculptor, but no one has asked so far?
Honestly, I can’t think of one. All the questions in this interview are great!
In closing this beautiful conversation, what would you say to our readers, primarily Arabian horse breeders and enthusiasts worldwide?
There is a great interest in Arabian horses, and I would love to create more sculptures of them, given their unique appearance. Through my work, I have come to appreciate the fascinating relationship between humans and horses. It’s remarkable how people connect with horses, treating them as important as their closest family members.

A SHORT OVERVIEW
Girardi
Throughout our many years in the Arabian horse show industry, we have wholeheartedly embraced the passion and dedication it entails at its fullest. However, we had never imagined that our professional journey as a press and media partner in the shows would evolve into an extraordinary adventure in the Far East, connecting the Arabian Horse Magazine team with China’s dynamic international breeding community. From April 18-20, 2025, we had the privilege of travelling to Tianjin for the China Breeders Cup Arabians Tour, brilliantly organised by the esteemed China Arabian Horse Promotion Association. This morphology event, hosted at the Jinmen Jockey Club, exceeded the mere showcase of beautiful Arabian horses. As we met and gathered with breeders, owners, long-term friends, and new interesting acquaintances made on the spot, along with crowd enthusiasts, it felt like it would transcend competition. The show was a heartfelt homage to the human bonds formed through our shared love for Arabian horses, proving that our passion truly knows no borders, cultures, or experiences.

The 2025 China Breeders Cup Arabians Tour programme featured an amazing Arabian horse beauty contest, various activities, Chinese folk dances, and colourful cultural performances. In addition, the following day, a Horse Forum in Qian’an, Hebei, provided significant insights into the future of Arabian horse breeding and the roles these horses play in fostering international connections. Renowned speakers, breeders, and prestigious international guests shared their expertise and experiences, promoting lively discussions among attendees and sparking thought-provoking ideas. One of the most memorable parts of our stay was a tour of the city with its small shops and traditional markets, as well as boat trips along the picturesque rivers of Tianjin. As we glided through the calm waters, we could admire beautiful and peaceful views of the city’s surroundings, dotted with historical landmarks and modern, tall buildings that told the stories of ancient and contemporary China. In its entirety, the China Breeders’ Cup Arabians Tour 2025 was not just a show, but an amazingly enriching cultural and human experience.

MOMENTS & PEOPLE
A Short Introduction
In the captivating landscape of the province of Como in northern Italy where lush pastures embrace a delightful cottage, Irina Stigler has woven her extraordinary passion for Arabian horses into the very essence of her life. While originally from Russia, her very own place on Earth where she feels the most at home is to be found at the foot of the Italian Alps…”
Tell me about your roots and how you discovered your greatest passion. Allow me to begin with saying that first and foremost I am a horse women and a breeder. Apart from that, I am of course proud to be an ECAHO A-list judge, and I cannot imagine my life without horses. My story starts in Moscow where I was born, but I have been for many years a resident in Italy, on the shores of Lake Como to be precise. It is here where I created quite a charming hideaway for both people and animals, Arabian horses originating mainly from Polish and Russian lines in particular, where everyone can enjoy life. Before I found this exceptional place on Earth, I had traveled along a curvy and bumpy road all the way from Russia. A good friend of mine asked me once how I thought a film about me would begin. It took me a while to reply, but it could start with a scene in black and white as I had a difficult childhood. My parents were scientists, and my education was strict as half of my family comes from Germany. My father was German – even his name Stiller suggests it – and my maternal great-grandfather was also German, his name was Koch. My father had come to Russia to teach philosophy at the university. So my roots are international, and most of my blood is actually German. I
received a broad education as a child. I actually started going to school a year and a half earlier than my schoolmates, because my parents considered me to be talented. They made me study many things, among them languages – obviously Russian as my mother tongue, Italian and English, and music. Everybody in my family played the piano, so naturally I was supposed to play it too. I started my piano lessons at the age of three, and I would practice regularly until thirteen. It was very hard for me because I was a very lively child. Sitting at the piano up to six or even eight hours a day when I was only ten years old was a massive challenge. My friends would ask me to come and play with them outdoors, but I was not allowed to. I had to practice many hours a day. And my parents would make sure that my skills were improving, so I’m used to hard work and discipline.
Humanities were not the only thing I dedicated myself to, however. In secret, as my father forbade it because of the piano, I tried my hand at sports. My father would always tell me to take care of my hands, and he truly believed it was my destiny to become a concert pianist. In spite of that, as a kid still, I took up fencing. I had to hide this passion of mine in the beginning, but being a very dynamic person, I loved it! I started practicing in a sport club when I was only nine years old. When I was fifteen, I became the USSR Junior Champion. But my family refused to accept my love for sports. Even now my mother cannot understand how I can be so close to horses, clean them, ride them – she thinks it’s something dirty.
Italy: A new beginning Arabian horses appeared in my life immediately after I left Russia. I studied psychology and linguistics at the Moscow State University. Then as a 23-years-young woman, I was offered an opportunity I simply couldn’t pass up on… I was working as an interpreter at exhibitions and trade fairs, just to earn some money because my family couldn’t help me a lot. Shortly after I graduated from university, I got a phone call from Clementine, the widely famous manufacturer of games for children. They invited me to come to Italy where they were setting up a joint-venture company with Russian partners. I was very young, I had no commitments, so I said “OK, let’s see what happens”. So I arrived in Italy. I was in Milan – no
family, no friends. It wasn’t an easy experience. People at the office were all much older than me, everything was very expensive, I couldn’t afford almost anything! But I must admit that this experience taught me a lot. I also worked in a sport club where I taught children fencing and participated with them in several competitions. I even took part in the All Nations Cup in Como against Margherita Zalaffi, a very famous Italian foilist, multiple Word and Olympic champion, and I lost by only one point! After six years of no training! That was a major achievement that I’m still very proud of.
Sometime later, I visited Verona and went to see the European Arabian Horse Championship. It was there that I saw an Arabian horse that mesmerized me: Piruet (Pro-
bat – Pieczęć / Palas). I immediately knew what kind of horses I would like to have in the future. I think it’s all about class and elegance. In a way I inherited this passion from my family – beauty was important for my parents, they were both good looking and elegant, and they paid attention to how they dressed.
On top of that, my grandfather was a horse breeder, so perhaps this passion was waiting to be unlocked within my genes. And so with my very first larger paycheck and the help of a bank, I bought a horse: an Arabian stallion. My first horse ever, and the very first Arabian in my life. Everyone seemed to be against me, telling me I was crazy, because the horse was really hot-blooded, that he was
bucking and behaving very badly. Before me, he had already had five or six owners, even though he was merely a three-year-old. But I successfully befriended him and rode him without any problems. We even competed in several endurance races, with good results I might add. His name was Idet and he passed away just a few days ago… At the beautiful age of 35. He was my all-time favorite horse, and whenever I had some spare time, I would put a saddle on him and go riding, just so we could be alone, the two of us. A little walk, then some trot – just for pleasure. I could think, I could plan, I trusted him with my whole heart.
Breeder and Judge: living out of a suitcase Obviously, one horse and endurance races in the mountains were not enough. I made up my mind to establish a stud farm. As a student of psychology, you also get to attend medical courses, so I more than scratched the surface when it came to, for example, genetics. I enjoyed it immensely and was good at it. If I hadn’t gotten into purebred Arabians, I probably would’ve chosen a path that had something to do with genetic engineering. After all, I am a doctor I also love dogs – their gentility and intelligence are what draws me to them so much. I am a breeder of Toy Poodles, and we even have three beautiful puppies this spring. I have also a very beautiful King Poodle female. Some consider them to be the most clever breed after Border Collies, and I think there is a lot of truth to this. But horse shows are something way different than dog exhibitions. In the former, I participate either as a judge or a breeder. When I’m participating in a show with my horses that I bred at home, it can be hard for me to stay calm. I get very nervous, just like any other breeder, because we all wants to win! And I can say today that I feel very lucky and privileged to be able to share with you my joy after my recent success in Belgium. At this year’s International Show as part of the Bruges Arabian Horse Event, my gorgeous filly SS Donna Ramadana won both the Junior Mare Gold Medal Champion title and Best in Show. That same weekend, a day later, another jewel bred and owned by Stigler Stud won a Yearling Filly Gold Medal Champion title – my precious SS Bella Hadid. When it comes to judging, when somebody asks me whether it is a pleasure or hard work, I simply reply that a judge should also be a teacher, a person who is able to
show the right direction to other breeders. A judge ought to be able to see and understand correctness combined with beauty. Without any doubt, it is a pleasure too as it means traveling, meeting people, making new friendships, and experiencing amazing hospitality all over the world. We’re one big family in this Arabian horse kingdom. That being said, the frequent travels can be quite challenging. I am always on the road, living out of suitcases, constantly in a rush. Actually, I have three suitcases at home that are always ready to be taken on another journey, waiting in a room, their lids open. It doesn’t matter if it’s a cold winter, a hot summer or any other season – I can’t waste time thinking what to take at the last moment. Sometimes I replace a dress, a pair of shoes or an accessory, or I buy something new – that goes without saying. But I’m ready whenever I am needed. And to be honest, I think I’m lucky. I can watch and observe beautiful horses up close, I get to study their pedigrees and decide what to do or not to do in my own breeding program. So traveling is always a beneficial experience, a very good lesson, because there is no end or limit to breeding. We must remember to be humble and to never stop learning. Despite my love for the desert, the defining moment for me as a breeder was my trip to the US and meeting the stallion Padrons Psyche. I visited him many years ago in his stables after the show in Las Vegas. Not only did he make a huge impression on me, but he impacted my breeding too. For me, he is the stallion of the century. There were other influential stallions in my breeding program, such as Poganin, Kahil Al Shaqab or Alexxanderr, but Padrons Psyche reigns supreme.
Daily Life at Stigler Stud
At my farm, I have horses mostly with Polish and Russian blood. Russian horses are descendants of Polish horses. As we all know, during the wars, Polish horses would be taken to the East, but then different stallions were used in both countries. So they are similar, but only to a certain point. Egyptian blood gives a lot of refinement, however, at the end of the day I think the winning combination lies not in pure breeding, but in some kind of mix. You are very limited if you work only with pure breeding. I am always looking for a correct horse, strong movement, and a beautiful eye. Some say that it is not possible to bre-
ed a horse that would be both correct and blessed with a beautiful, exotic head. But I think it’s worth trying. I am always on the lookout for a combination of good legs and beautiful head. Is it possible? It’s hard, but we have to try. Fashions change, people are beginning to realize that bodies and legs will be difficult to repair for generations to come. We need stronger conformation these days. We, as breeders of Arabian horses, made too many mistakes in the recent years – worldwide. While judging, I see many horses in the ring. On the one hand, they have beautiful heads and long necks, but on the other – tiny bones, small hooves, faulty long bodies, and no movement whatsoever.
Such horses probably wouldn’t be able to go under saddle, not even for a few miles. Of course, it is difficult to breed an excellent horse, it’s everybody’s dream. But I think nothing is impossible. On the contrary: anything is possible! If we say “it can’t be done”, we’re giving up and that’s the worst thing one could ever do. Success doesn’t come overnight – it’s a slow process, but clever breeders can achieve it provided they are lucky and not afraid of hard work. Their dream horse is not out of reach. But it will not happen in a year or two. What we must keep in mind it to always dream big. That’s why I absolutely love this time of year when foals are born. I can then evaluate the
results of my decisions – the weaknesses and strong points alike. Of course, nobody can know upfront how they will develop, how they will mature, how they will look in the future. But quality is indisputably something you can see the instant they are born. It’s difficult to explain how one knows or feels it. Perhaps it’s a kind of a talent – you either see it or you don’t. But if you know how to look and what to look for, you might just be able to catch a glimpse of the future and make a little prediction: is this my future champion?
Saddle and Mountains: Moments to herself
Horses are not my only professional activity. From time to time, I still run a pet shop for my long-time loyal clients, dog breeders. The only time when my mind is completely clear, when I can think and do the planning is when I ride my horse in the park. I am happy when I put on the saddle – a big military one – and go riding alone with my horse. We have a special connection, me and him. He has to understand me, I have to understand him. And we are close to nature which is important too.
Many frequent show observers and Arabian horse enthusiasts congratulate me for being an elegant judge in the show ring. For me, it’s important, as the name itself suggests: it is a show, and in this spectacle, it is not only about horses. I think all officials should be elegant, same as the breeders and owners. We should present ourselves the best way can. This way we will be more successful in attracting newcomers to our unique industry. When people ask me where my style comes from and how come I’m always dressed like that, chic and elegant, I have to say it is probably because of my father. He would always dress like a gentleman should, whether he was
playing piano or organs, performing in concerts – it was a must. And I also like to be different – I am a non-conformist, and it goes for a lot more than just clothes. It’s probably genetic. I sometimes hear: “Oh, you are one of the most elegant judges we have ever seen. Where do you buy your clothes?” Living in Italy helps for sure – we have many great shops there. The funny thing is that my late good friend, an absolutely amazing women, a smiling breeder and insightful judge, Lenita Perroy pictured me once in one of her paintings as a Polish Queen!
To sum everything up, I have to say I am satisfied. I’m fulfilled in my professional life, I know how to make my dreams come true, and I have to admit this is probably the best time of my life right now. I would repeat everything I did in my life. The only thing I might maybe change a little are some people – would be nice to avoid those playing behind your back. But even the hardest of times can open new doors and impact your future in unpredictable ways.
Just don’t forget to stay humble and always keep on learning. It’s important to always be the best version of yourself. And that’s my secret that I’ve just shared with you…
