Brazilian jockey Bernardo Pinheiro Pereira was born in the mountainous city of Teresópolis, State of Rio de Janeiro, on May 13, 1996. Since he was a child, he has always been a lover of sports, adrenaline and challenges and, above all, nature and animals. And horses! In this interview, we let Bernardo himself tell us his story from the beginning of his career as a jockey in Brazil to his current moment of prominence in the United Arab Emirates, in which he is the first jockey of Yas Racing and Al Wathba Racing, both owned by HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority; and having as trainer Majed Al Jahoori. Bernardo Pinheiro: I grew up on a farm and at one point in my childhood we had some horses, but they were farm horses, working horses. My older brothers rode and taught me to ride. And we rode without any type of equipment, which were the basics of the countryside. During this period I obviously fell in love with them even more.

I didn’t know racing and for me it was something old and/or from movies, something very distant. Close to turning seven years old, I missed the school bus back home and a man took me. He was jockey Anderson Ramilo, but I didn’t know. He immediately became a friend of my family and told me a little about racing, showed me training centers that were close to the farm where I grew up and that I didn’t know existed. The friendship we made was intense and quick. After a few weeks, he disappeared from our lives. The house he lived in was closed and neighbors said he had moved. He just disappeared from my life for about seven years. At 14 years old I met him again when I was at a waterfall in the region. We talked a lot and the friendship only grew stronger as if seven years had been just seven days. He started coming to my house a lot again and the friendship became stronger.

In the first year of high school, I found myself at that stage of life in which I would begin to decide my future: which college to attend, which career to pursue; and I was thinking about studying Economics, because I liked it, but in my heart and in my reflections and prayers something told me to dedicate myself to some sport. I was pretty small and skinny for my age and I wasn’t that good at our country’s main sports like football or volleyball or something like that. One day, after my reflections and prayers, I called Anderson Ramilo and asked about the jockey profession and if I could become a jockey. For me, these were questions far from a confused, adolescent mind, especially because it had been about three years since I had had contact with any horse. He was excited by my questions and took me to the training centers again and, for the first time, to the Rio de Janeiro Jockey Club. With more age and maturity, I had a better idea about being a jockey and at that moment a passion was born in me. With this decision in mind I started to know more and more. Shortly afterwards I moved to his house and he started taking me frequently to the training centers where he worked and started teaching me. Obviously I didn’t stop studying; I just transferred school to the afternoon so I could accompany him to morning training. Because I was weak and small, no trainer would let me ride. Anderson hand-built a wooden horse and began training me on it. Months later we managed to get some trainers to let me ride some horses; and then work.

At the end of 2012 I entered the Rio Apprentice School and passed the selection process. It was 11 months at school, working and learning a lot until I debuted as a 4th category apprentice. November 1, 2013 was my debut as an apprentice and an unforgettable day in my life. I had three mounts. With the first one I finished in third place. It started to rain a lot and in the second ride I finished fourth. On my third and last ride of the day it was raining a lot and the goal was outside and I was Arabian Horse Intl

ordered by the trainer to do a diagonal (something known in Brazilian racing, but not so much here) and something difficult to do perfectly, especially for a debut apprentice. Thank God I did perfectly and won my first race on the day of my debut. I was leader of Apprentice Statistics in Rio de Janeiro for two years (2013 and 2014) and was hired by some of the biggest owners in the country, such as Anderson Stables, Estrela Energia Stables and Regina Stables. I achieved many classic victories and grand prizes in Brazil, but the most important was my only Group 1 in Brazil in 2021: the Margarida Polak Lara Grand Prix, Silver Cup in Rio de Janeiro. With the mare Macadâmia I won the 1,600 meter race on turf grass on June 27, 2021, Hipódromo da Gávea, Jockey Club Brasileiro, Rio de Janeiro. Since I became a professional in Brazil I have always enjoyed traveling and from the beginning I wanted to be an international jockey. When learning on the wooden horse we talked about Dubai, because Ramilo, my friend who helped me, competed in Dubai. During my career at school, when I heard stories about the great Brazilian jockeys around the world, I followed the main international races. During the period in which I was hired at Estrela Energia Stables owned by Stefan and Dalva Friborg, owner of Glória de Campeão who won the 2010 Dubai World Cup ridden by the Brazilian jockey Tiago Josué Pereira, we talked a lot about Dubai which made me dream more and have ambitions to race in the UAE. But the opportunity to come to the UAE came 8

Arabian Horse Intl

through an Instagram follower who worked at Dubai Racing TV and had two horses. He encouraged me a lot and one day I dropped everything in Brazil and just came. In “face and courage”, as we say in Brazil, and only with a one-way ticket, without knowing how to speak or understand English, without work, without a visa, without anything. Despite all the problems I faced, it was the best decision of my life. I have important and unforgettable victories here, but my biggest victories in the UAE are the two Group 1 races I won: Emirates Championship for Purebred Arabians in 2022 riding Harrab and 2023 riding Ajrad-Athbah in Abu Dhabi. I am currently contracted to HH Sheikh Mansoor and it was something surprising for me. I

received the offer to race some of trainer Majed Al Jahoori’s individual mounts at the end of the 2020/2021 season and we had good results. The following season (2021/2022) he hired me as his first jockey. It was and is something very important to me and I feel honored to be part of this team and represent the colors of HH Sheikh Mansoor. In the last two off-seasons in the UAE I was in Singapore and, especially, this season was spectacular as I won two Group 1 races that I had dreamed of there. I never had an invitation or help to go, it was just me applying and trying my luck. Not only in the season in which I finished 4th in statistics here in the UAE, but since I started my international career I have been aware of how important it is for a Brazilian jockey to stand out. We are an example, we are a mirror; and wherever we go we carry our flag and nationality. I feel honored to be able to try to represent and give the best possible impression of Brazil to the UAE and the world. How do I prepare for races? I try to have a generally healthy and balanced diet. I practice sports to stay in shape, do something I enjoy like hiking, climbing mountains, running, hiking, swimming and Slacklining, etc. A dream is to compete in the Dubai World Cup. There are many unforgettable races, but my last victory in the G1 in Singapore, Queen Elizabeth II Cup, has a phenomenal story behind it and I think it currently deserves this position. I don’t have a specific race as the most challenging, but I have an entire weekend. In 2019, I had a fall and broke my elbow on Sunday, had

a PRP procedure and rode with a broken and recovering elbow five days later, when on Saturday I broke my own record for wins in a single day by winning five races and on Sunday I entered second in the $1 million Derby and no one knew. With so many different trips, places and racecourses it is difficult to name a horse that has marked my career, as many have played important and special roles in my life, but if I have to give just one name it has to be where it all started: INIESTA my first victory in 2013. My wife Gabriela is very important in my life, so I can also say in my career. She has been by my side for seven years and I can say with conviction that she is the only person who has a little understanding of how difficult my journey was and still is today. She is certainly my balance, my foundation. I’m not superstitious, but I have a lot of faith. I always pray before, during and after riding. “God without me is God; without God I am nothing!” I don’t have an idol, as I’ve always been a person who tries to observe and learn a little from everyone, but I’ve always been inspired by Jorge Ricardo’s ambition, dedication, professionalism. Marcelo Cardo loved watching riding and I had the honor of having him as my teacher at the apprentice school; Carlos Lavor great jockey from whom I learned a lot, as we worked together for years at Anderson Stables and Regina Stables. Among the international jockeys João Moreira and Frankie Dettori. Cristiano Ronaldo is a perfect athlete and our Ayrton Senna.

Memória 2013, The Return of Arabian Horse Racing in Brazil

By Almir José Ribeiro The year 2013 was marked by the return of the Arabian Horse Racing in Brazil, this time at the Cidade Jardim Hippodrome and thanks to the hard work of the Saliba Family through Mr. Jamil Saliba and his sons Ricardo Jamil Saliba and our Arabian Horse Racing Ambassador Paulo Jamil Saliba together the board of directors of the Jockey Club of São Paulo, chaired by Mr. Eduardo Rocha Azevedo, who from the first meeting was enthusiastic about the idea and, together with a group of Arabian Horse breeders, made this dream a reality. Each day we had a different challenge: putting a reasonable number of animals in training, creating a fund to pay for our animals’ prizes, organizing a racing calendar that would guarantee the continuity of our races for at least the next two years and only after we have all this considered do we set out to make our big dream come true. We organized a huge semen auction to build our “2013/2014 budget” and we counted on the massive participation of our Arabian horse breeders, who not only donated the semen, but also purchased them. Values at the time R$ 160,000.00, almost US80.000,00. Paulo Saliba and Rodrigo Schulze took care of the organization and definition of the first races with the definition of distances and floor, as well as monitoring the animals’ training so that we didn’t have any problems, as we were starting a whole process of preparation for the races and for the vast majority of owners, everything was new.

Together with Paulo Saliba, we take care of our affiliation with the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) and we have also started to exchange information with other countries looking for partners and sponsorships. And in the same week after our first race, our ambassador Paulo Jamil Saliba arrived in Paris to participate in the IFAHR General Assembly and officially join Brazil as a member of this important federation. On October 7, 2013, under the curious and suspicious eyes of the 22 IFAHR representatives, Brazil was officially unanimously approved as a member of the Federation, being the first Latin American country to belong to this federation. Here in Brazil, we held four races in 2013, two being Grand Prix during the 2013 Arabian Horse National and the highlight of this first year of racing was without a doubt Atentaddo VE, which won two of the three races in which it competed, but All Pol Rach and Thunder Rach valued each of Atentaddo VE’s victories, as they were truly breathtaking contests. We also had the victory of the first female of the Arabian breed, Nadja AJR, who ran and won the First Grande Premio Arabian Ladies in history, on November 18, 2013 in Cidade Jardim. The year 2014 had not yet started, but everyone was already imagining a great year for Arabian horse racing in Brazil, as the world knew that Brazil was part of the global Arabian horse racing scene. CHAMPIONSHIP, CASTELSAGRAT, FRANCE 2023

Gulf countries out in force; Brazil rubs shoulders with perfection

O

nce again, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain came out on top

far from the lead, but not completely in front” explained Rodrigo Storani Saliba from Brazil.

Brazilian rider Rodrigo Storani Saliba, who came to compete as an individual, was keen to put in a fine performance at this World Championship, his last as he changed categories (due to age).

Another group forms, made up of teams from Portugal, Italy, Tunisia, as well as riders from India, Finland, Libya...

Here’s the story of a race that turned out to be more complicated than expected. Saturday, September 2: it’s still dark in the small Occitan village of Castelsagrat, host of these Young Riders & juniors World Championships, and the rain invited itself even before the start of the race. 70 horse-riders pairs from 26 nations line up for the mass start. After the traditional countdown from 10 to 1, the start is given at 7:00 am sharp. From the outset, the Emirati and Bahraini riders set the tempo: they’re not here for a stroll! Two Spaniards, an Argentinean, the 5 French riders and the Brazilian rider follow well placed and observant: “We had decided not to be too

They are all motivated to complete the 4 loops that make up this 120km race. The drizzle made the grassy sections slippery, and the lack of caution on the part of some riders led to repeated falls and horses running loose. The 1st loop was very lively due to the excessive speeds of some riders. The leading riders covered the 28km of this first loop in 1h28, an average speed of 19,9 km/h. Seven couples will stop there. Just as steep as the first (around 430m), the 2nd loop will nevertheless be slower: a lesson learned from the first loop... Right from the first assistance point, the average speed drops to 17 - 18km/h. Some riders, such as the French Emma Chazel and Victor Fabre Carlus, decided to leave the Arabian Horse Intl

19

group behind to lower the pace and preserve their horses. France’s team strategy is to go home with a medal or even a title. The veterinary inspection of this 2nd loop will give them a scare: Shaailan’al Hfifa (Pablo Tomas Arnaud’s horse) has to be re-inspected because of a too high heart rate. This would happen again on the next loop. Brazilian rider Rodrigo Storani Saliba, for his part, stuck with the French: “The French team knows the course well and they know how to succeed. I thought it was smarter to start with them and then judge what to do during the race”. While Bahrain and the UAE kept the lead, the 3rd loop brought more scares for the French team. Bamos de Kerdraon has unshod, forcing his rider Victor Fabre Carlus to run alongside his horse to reach his assistant and the farrier. Please note how quick was Jérémy Jecker to put the shoe back on less than 90’’. The 34km, 493m-high 3rd loop was not kind to the competitors: 13 couples were eliminated, including 2 from the French team, Garance Julien/Hasslan de Fignols and Léa Vandekerckhove/Guemra du Lauragais who had set out to catch the leading group in the hunt for an individual medal, but it was a bad day for her 20

Arabian Horse Intl

mare. Tough blow for for the French team, who had no more cartridge in reserve. At this stage, only 42 of the 70 competitors remained, including the Brazilian rider who mastered his race with great intelligence, moving up from 18th place in the first loop to 7th at the finish of this 3rd loop. Seeing that his horse Loukario des Verrières was in very good form, Rodrigo left the French group to join the 6 leading riders, who took a 10-minute lead over the next group. Suspense was expected on the 4th and final stage, and there was plenty of it. The fastest rider in this race, the Emirati Rashed Ahmad Seghayer Alktebi/Eddy de Montrozier, completed the loop at a speed of 25.9km/h, taking first place on the podium ahead of his compatriot Rashed Mohamed Atiq Khamis Almehairi/Castlebar Cadabra, who completed the stage at a speed of 25km. They were followed by 2 Bahrainis, Isa Hameed Dakheel al Anezi/ Ermine Dartagnan and Abdulla Hasan Alshaer Alrowaie/Be Goode. This line of Gulf riders was interrupted by Brazilian rider Rodrigo Storani Saliba/Loukario des Verrières, who wisely maintained his 5th place when he saw that the riders ahead of him were galloping at breakneck speed: “Halfway

through the 3rd loop, I felt that my horse was doing well and that I could perhaps join the leading group: I had to choose the right moment to attack the leaders! But at the end, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the 6 leading riders who decided to accelerate. So, I decided not to follow them and to continue the race at the speed that suited my horse”.

Individua: 1° Rashed Ahmad Seghayer Alktebi (UAE) on Eddy De Montrozier; 2° Rashed Mohamed Atiq Khamis Al Mehairi (UAE) on Castlebar Cadabra; 3° Isa Hameed Dakheel Al Anezi (BRN) on Ermine Dartagnan; 4º Abdulla Hasan Alshaer Alrowaie (BRN) on Be Goode; 5º Rodrigo Storani Saliba (BRA) on Loukario Desverrieres

There were 4 UAE riders to cross the finish line, but at the final veterinary inspection, 2 riders from their team were eliminated. The UAE left the team victory to Bahrain, followed by France and Italy.

Team: 1° Bahrain, Finish Time 18:59:45; 2° France, Finish Time 20:19:37; 3° Italy: Finish Time = 21:49:31

Special mention goes to Tunisia, who took 4th place with 4 finisher riders (one of their horses was kicked on the 1st loop), and to Italy, whose 5 riders finished the race. Note the supremacy of French horses on this Championship full of twists and turns (as on others too): By team: Gold: Bahrain 5/5 French horses; Silver: France 5/5 French horses and Bronze: Italy 2/5 French horses. Individual: 9/16 French horses. Text and photos by Anne Jonchery

Portrait of a young rider packed of talent with very specific goals by Anne Jonchery Arabian Horse International met Rodrigo Storani Saliba at the Young Riders World Championships in Castelsagrat (France). His aim was to finish the race with a horse in good condition, and if possible in the Top 10: he finished in the Top 5! He achieved his goal: “It’s a lovely gift and a great reward for everything we’re trying to build”. Rodrigo’s family owns an Arabian horses breeding, Rach Stud, and he values the horses. A great endurance race is also organized there in May. Although Rodrigo was familiar with the tracks, he had already ridden at Castelsagrat and won the CEIYJ2* Test Event in 2022, this race was a little more difficult: “the speed was higher and there were a few rain-drops in the morning. As a result, there were places where the ground slipped a little. There were changes in temperature all day long, but that didn’t cause any problems for my horse: he managed it well”. When asked if he had moments of doubt, his answer is very clear: “Every time there was a small change in temperature, I was very careful. It wasn’t my horse I was worried about, but more the weather conditions; I didn’t want to make any mistakes”. Never far from the lead Right from the start, Rodrigo moved up to the lead of the race with a well-defined strategy: “We decided not to be too far from the front, but not completely ahead. I spent part of the race with the French. I didn’t think it was smart to follow the leaders because I didn’t know what they were going to do”.

he raced for the last time; from 2024, Rodrigo will be competing in the Seniors category. The couple’s performance was all the more remarkable given that Loukario des Verrières was competing in his first World Cup, and that they were up against some very experienced horses and top-level riders. Rodrigo thus achieves the best individual result ever achieved by a young Brazilian rider. The preparation of a top-level athlete Those who have already seen Rodrigo race will have noticed that it is not uncommon to see him running beside his horse: “He already did this at Castelsagrat last year and in Brazil. When there are big climbs, he’s used to getting off his horse and running alongside” comments Veterinary Doctor Guilherme Santos, a close family friend and very active member of the team surrounding Rodrigo. And Rodrigo’s physical condition is not a funny matter: he runs on an inclined treadmill, does gymnastics and boxing. For this Championship, the young Brazilian has put all the chances on his side: “he has a nutritionist who has prepared a special diet for him to follow on a daily basis. For Castelsagrat, he lost 6 kilos. Rodrigo is tall (1m83 – ed.note), so he has to do everything he can to be as light as possible” explains Doctor Santos. A sharp preparation for an unusual race A World Championship is not an ordinary race. To give him the best chance as possible, Rodrigo’s team has put in place very precise preparation:

So why did he join the French group? “The French team knows the course well and they know how to succeed. I thought it was smarter to start with them and then judge what to do during the race”. With everything going well, Rodrigo suddenly changed tactics: “Halfway through the 3rd loop, I felt that my horse was doing well and that I could perhaps join the leading group: I had to choose the right moment to attack this group! But at the end, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the 6 leading riders who had decided to speed up. So, I decided not to follow them and to continue the race at the speed that suited my horse”. It was a good decision, as the young Brazilian took the 5th place in this Championship, which Arabian Horse Intl

Rodrigo Saliba and Loukario des Verrières winners of CEIYJ2* Test Event in Castelsagrat 2022

“Last year, Rodrigo took part in the test event at Castelsagrat. But to compete in this World Championship, he needed a 2nd race with Loukario des Verrières. So, we went to Fontainebleau (France) last October, where they qualified (the pair finished 8th at an average speed of 19.2 km/h - ed. note). This year, we raced at Castelsagrat on the CEIYJ*- 100 km in May, where they came 2nd (they were the fastest on the last loop: 19.4 km/h, with an overall average speed of 18.5 km/h – ed.note). This race was just to perfect the horse’s evolution, to show him the track again, and for the rider to remember it well” explains Dr Santos. But although Rodrigo was quite calm and kept a cool head, he was still a little anxious a few days before the race; everything was managed remotely, since Rodrigo only arrived 3 days before the start of the Championship. He was still able to get back in touch with his horse and the track during the outings scheduled for the 2 days before the big day. Loukario des Verrières: his accomplice This 9-year-old thoroughbred Arabian horse, son of Djevar des Graves (Djebel Lotois x Varoussa*Ecolit) and Ondine du Pouy (Dormane* HN x Helen de Colmar) is under contract to Rodrigo. The pair met at the test event last year, and got along very well. He has been owned by his breeder and trainer since his debut, the Frenchman Ludovic Sarroul. 26

Arabian Horse Intl

But it is not certain that Rodrigo / Loukario des Verrières will be back on the endurance circuit: the horse interests many people ... so what does the young Brazilian’s future hold? A mystery ... perhaps with a horse from the family breeding ... On to Monpazier 2024 With or without Loukario des Verrières, Rodrigo intends to take part in the next World Championships, this time in the Seniors category: “They already have qualified horses in Brazil, so there’s plenty of time to bring them to Europe. But first, as Rodrigo is changing category, he needs to qualify as a pair”, reports Dr Guilherme Santos, “the family’s aim was to promote breeding. Now we’ll see; with horses, you never know .....”. So there is a good chance we will see a horse bearing the Rach affix galloping on the Dordogne tracks next year. In the meantime, Rodrigo’s next target is not only to take part in the Pan-American Games (Llay-Llay, Chile) on November 23rd, with a horse from the family stud, Miranda Rach, but he has the aim of winning. Rodrigo will compete with the Brazilian team for the 1st time. A solid team What would a rider be without support? Rodrigo is well aware of this, and would like to thank his entire team: “We worked in a good atmo-

sphere, and did a great job. I’d like to thank my father, Ricardo, and Guilherme (Dr. Santos, ed.), Pedro, Ludovic, Leslie and Thomas. It’s an incredible team that has enabled me to realize my dream”. For the past year and a half, the whole team has been working on fine-tuning the settings for both horse and rider; there are a few cultural differences that had to be worked out: “My role has been to act as an intermediary to help the rider understand what is important for Ludovic’s team, and to try to explain Ludovic the way of working in Brazil. The way of racing between France and Brazil is really different. It was important to maintain this good atmosphere” explains Dr Guilherme Santos. This date at Castelsagrat was essential for them following the big disappointment of 4 years ago: “for the World Championship in Pisa (Italy), we had rented a horse which started limping 15 days before the race! So, the only option we had to participate was to find a horse that was already on the nominative list, even in another country. At the last minute, we found a horse in Italy. Everyone made an effort: the Italians, the Brazilian federation, the FEI who waited

until the last moment, and in the end, the horse didn’t pass the initial inspection. It was a huge frustration for the whole team and the family who were there. So, we all went home” says Guilherme Santos, who adds that they dealt with the situation “with much elegance”. Everyone went back to work, and all their efforts were finally rewarded with this fine 5th place. It is important to keep in mind that Rodrigo is not an Olympic hopeful, as endurance is not an Olympic discipline. As a result, his main sponsor is his family, with the family breeding, Rach Stud. In 2022, Rodrigo’s performance has enabled him to take the 1st place on the endurance ranking list. This year, he is the only endurance rider nominated for the Longines FEI Rising Star, which recognizes an athlete aged between 14 and 21 who demonstrate exceptional sporting talent and commitment. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Clapton AJR achieves eighth vic

Under the impeccable command of jockey Antonio Mesquita, Clapton AJR wins from start to finish the UAE President Cup Series Grand Prix at the Cidade Jardim Racecourse and achieves his eighth victory and matches the talented Atentaddo VE. In addition to the victory, Clapton AJR set a new record in the 1,500-meter dirt race for males and females by completing the course in 1:44:781. The previous record of 1:45:489 was held by his half-brother VG Al Mared in the April 15 race. Bred and owned by Almir José Ribeiro, trained by Oberdan S. Pereira and once again ridden by Antonio Mesquita, the 5-year-old gray Clapton AJR (Mared Al Sahra x *Cowboys Gal by Wiking) now joins Atentaddo VE (Wonderful Boy x Dahaby NA by *Padrons Image) with a record of eight wins. The duo Mesquita and Clapton AJR crossed in first place with an 11 ¾ lengths advantage over RG El Bak (RG Karat x *Endora by Wojslaw), under the mount of Idevaldo Silva, who competed for second place with Normandia Rach (*Uzbek Du Lion x Novella Rach by Voltaire Rach) under the command of Ruberlei Viana. 38

In this race, the mare Normandia Rach broke the female record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 1:46:996, which was 1:50:191 held by Osiris Rach since November 20, 2021. Both are bred and owned by Rach Stud and trained by Lucas Quintana. “We are excited about this great display from Clapton AJR. As breeder and owner, I brought the family to Cidade Jardim to see ‘our child’ shine once again, to the pride of Márcia, Marina and Maria Eduarda. We are grateful for the excellent work of our team led by trainer Oberdan Pereira, with the full dedication of Zé Gato and who, under the command of the experienced Antonio Mesquita, shone once again”, declared Almir José Ribeiro. Trainer Oberdan S. Pereira said after the race. “This victory has a special meaning for everyone on the team. Clapton AJR competed in ten races, was champion in eight, runner-up in two, losing only to his half-brother VG Raj Al Mared. I can say with certainty that both are the best Arabian animals in Latin America. We have three more races until the end of the year and we are looking for these victories. I was confident that Mesquita, who knows the horse

ctory and 1,500 meters record

very well, would seek this victory again.” “Clapton AJR is in excellent form. Right at the start we took the lead and I managed, but always looking at RG El Bak who in the last race attacked us a lot. In the last 500 meters I was watching all the time to make sure I wouldn’t be attacked again and as Clapton showed more and more desire to run, we won calmly and with more than 11 lengths in front”, declared jockey Mesquita after the race. Almir José Ribeiro, Racing Director of Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA) said: “I want to thank ABCCA and the Jockey Club of São Paulo (JCSP) for believing in Arabian racing, and especially His Highness Sh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority; and HE Faisal Al Rahmani, President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) and General Director of the UAE President Cup for their partnership and trust in this project that has already completed four years of success in Brazil and which is truly a project of promotion and encouragement to the development and consolidation of Arabian horse racing in Brazil and which from 2024 onwards will be consolidated in South America through the holding of Arabian horse races in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.” “Brazil is the great protagonist of Arabian Horse racing in South America because for more than a decade we have been building another chapter in this story. With each new race and each new record that is set, the success

continues and our times are equal to those of the best races in the world.” Ribeiro added: “Once again we had an excellent race in Cidade Jardim with our best Arabian horses that shined and enchanted all those who watched another fantastic performance by Clapton AJR who is equal to the icon of Arabian horse racing in Brazil, Atentaddo VE, who made history at JCSP and is still remembered today for his unforgettable races.” In addition to the prizes during the races, all horses participating in the 2023 Race Calendar also compete in the 2023 Arabian Cup Race category promoted by the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association. RG Kalifa achieves first victory in the Prêmio UAE President Cup Series For Colts & Fillies IV

RG Kalifa, a five-year-old brown female, achieved her first victory in the Prêmio UAE President Cup Series For Colts & Fillies IV held over 1,100m on dirt for males and females 3-years-old and older at the Cidade Jardim Hippodrome, Jockey Club de São Paulo. After a well-balanced start, RG Kalifa, very well ridden by Michael Silva, takes the lead while Passionaddo Rach (Atentaddo VE x Passion Rach by Vaillant Rach) driven by Ruberlei Viana and the debutant Rubicon Rach (Bismarck Rach x Rhondda Rach by Gothos Rach) under Valdir Souza’s saddle fight for second place. In the last 300 meters, the experienced Vivina Rach (Bismarck Rach x Vaneska Rach by Mister Eros HX) ridden by Jeffecleone Bispo attacks from the outside, overtakes her half-brother Rubicon Rach and fights for second place with Passionaddo Rach. With less than 50 meters to go, Vivina Rach Arabian Horse Intl

overtakes Passionaddo Rach again on the outside and in a sensational start she tries to catch RG Kalifa who wins the race with 1 ½ length and a time of 1:17:995. The animal is owned and bred by Claudio Roberto Guimarães Ribas and trained by Estanislau Petrochinski. Jockey Michael Silva declared after the race: “After we all started together I felt RG Kalifa’s mood and separated myself from the group on the outside, we took the lead and I managed the race for our first victory.” “RG Kalifa is the most experienced animal in the race and with Michael’s impeccable driving we achieved our first victory in this important race. She is a mare for longer distances and now we need to continue training for more victories”, said trainer Estanislau Petrochinski. Almir José Ribeiro, Racing Director of the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA) commented after the race: “Once

again we had an excellent race in Cidade Jardim with our best Arabian horses that shone and enchanted everyone who watched. It was a fantastic display from RG Kalifa to win a very well contested race.” “I want to thank ABCCA and the Jockey Club of São Paulo (JCSP) for believing in Arabian racing, and especially His Highness Sh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority; and HE Faisal Al Rahmani, President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) and General Director of the UAE President Cup for their partnership and trust in this project that has already completed four years of success in Brazil and which is truly a project of promotion and encouragement to the development and consolidation of Arabian horse racing in Brazil.” In addition to the prizes during the races, all horses participating in the 2023 Race Calendar also compete in the 2023 Arabian Cup Race category promoted by the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association. Allure BV debuts in Cidade J

With a crushing victory in her debut race at the UAE President Cup Series For Colts & Fillies III, Allure BV showed all her potential and is a strong candidate to compete with the best animals of the year. The six-year-old gray Allure BV, driven spectacularly by apprentice jockey Dayvid Israel, achieved the 1,000 meter turf record for males and females for 3-year-old and older, with a time of 1:02.57 and 16 ¾ lengths ahead of the experienced RG Kalifa under the direction of Michael Silva. From start to finish, even when she started jumping, she was the best. Bred and owned by Susana de Locio e Silva S. Marino, from Haras Bom Viver; daughter of *D’Jok Py and Arzade Cabitat by Rhalan Cabitat, before arriving at the Jockey Club of São Paulo (JCSP), Allure BV began her sporting campaign in endurance races; which proves, once again, the combination of these two sports: Endurance and Turf. Allure BV is trained by Dr. Thiago Haidar and 42

has Dr. Henrique Garcia as a veterinarian, the same team as champion VG Raj Al Mared, which provides greater expectations of having another exponent in this new generation of Arabian racing horses in Brazil. “We believed in a good debut, but it was much better than we imagined. We knew that on turf she would do well due to the training we had and the short time at JCSP, as she came from endurance. Since the beginning of her training, she has shown that she likes the new sport and has shown enormous potential and now we are moving on to longer distance races”, said trainer Haidar after the race. Jockey Dayvid Israel said: “I believed in victory, but I had a lot of respect for my opponents because we competed with experienced and winning animals. I just didn’t imagine that Allure BV would start with so much desire to race. In the last meters I looked back and couldn’t believe our advantage. Now we will continue training and look for new victories.”

Jardim with a record break

In addition to Allure BV, two sons of Atentaddo VE, record holder in victories to date, also raced for the first time and with good results. Passionaddo Rach (Atentaddo VE x Passion Rach by Vaillant Rach) finished in third place and Magicat Rach (Atentaddo VE x Magic All Rach by Ulisses Rach) in fifth place with little difference. Almir José Ribeiro, Racing Director of the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA), said “We have completed 10 years of Arabian racing in Brazil and we are hopeful with this new generation and we will certainly have new champions who will continue to build the history of Arabian horses racing in Brazil.” “Our deep and sincere thanks to HH Sh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority for his visionary insight into the future of Arabian horse racing in the world and especially the dedication and affection that HE Faisal Al Rahmani, President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) and General Director of the UAE President Cup, has for Brazil and Brazilian Arabian horse.” In addition to prizes during the races, all horses participating in the 2023 Race Calendar also compete in the 2023 Arabian Cup Race cate-

Text and photos Cidinha Franzão

In an exciting race dominated until the seventh furlong by Gwan AJR, the gray five-year-old Clapton AJR shines once again and takes his seventh victory and third in the UAE President Cup South America Mondial Brazil, Saturday September 9th, at the Hippodrome of Cidade Jardim, Jockey Club de São Paulo. The UAE President Cup Series for Colts & Fillies II Award, which had the participation of six animals (three males and three females) was contested over 1,600 meters on turf for males and females 3-year-old and older. While Gwan AJR (All Pol Rach x Greece AJR by Second Chall) remained in the lead with Clapton AJR (Mared Al Sahra x Cowboys Gal by Wiking) in second place, RG EL Bak (Karat x *Endora by Wojslaw) and Normandia Rach (*Uzbek Du Lion x Novella Rach by Voltaire Rach) the last in the race begin a sensational recovery. In the final 150 meters, Clapton AJR, RG El Bak and Normandia Rach attack from the outside and advance. In the final 50 meters, Clapton AJR, ridden by Antonio Mesquita, dominates the race followed closely by RG El Bak with jockey Idevaldo Silva, while Normandia Rach ridden by apprentice jockey Gabriel Santana attacks from the outside to try for third place. Under a strong attack from RG El Bak, Clapton

AJR crossed first with a ¾ length advantage and, in this way, confirmed his favoritism and achieved his seventh victory in 10 races, with three second places. Jockey Antonio Mesquita said: “Because I was the heaviest jockey in the race, weighing 64 kg, I spared Clapton and waited for the exact moment to attack, but always keeping an eye on RG El Bak who was very eager to win. As I know Clapton AJR very well, I was sure we would win, despite it being a very close race.” “With this victory, Clapton AJR equals Menthor Rach with seven victories in addition to winning three UAE President Cup South America Mondial Brazil races this year. By the end of the month we will have another Grand Prix and we will try for our eighth victory to equal the great Atentaddo VE, which is the leader in Arabian horse racing statistics in Brazil”, declared breeder and owner Almir José Ribeiro. Trainer Oberdan S. Pereira commented: “Today we had a very competitive race, with Gwan AJR dominating in the 1,400 meters. But I was confident that Mesquita, who has already ridden and won with Clapton AJR, would seek this victory again. We had a very strong attack from RG El Bak, who is a horse that likes longer distances, but we managed to achieve our seventh victory.”

nth victory and third in the ies for Fillies & Colts II

Racing Director of Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA), Almir José Ribeiro said: “Today we had an exciting and closely contested race with winning animals. We are in the fourth year of sponsorship and with more than 30 races held at the UAE President Cup South America Mondial Brazil. We have veteran animals competing at longer distances and a new generation for 2024 that has already arrived at the São Paulo Jockey Club and should debut from October this year.” “On behalf of ABCCA and Brazilian breeders, I want to thank once again our sponsors who believed in Arabian horse racing in Brazil, HH Sh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority; and HE Faisal Al Rahmani, President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) and General Director of the UAE President Cup.” “This month of September, we completed 10 years of Arabian racing in Brazil and we are hopeful with this new generation and we will certainly have new champions who will continue to build the history of Arabian racing horses in Brazil.” In addition to the prizes during the races, all horses participating in the 2023 Race Calendar

Al Ghadeer win Qatar Arabian World Cup

Al Ghadeer, the favourite in the Qatar Arabian World Cup – equivalent of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe for the purebred Arabians - won the race without any hesitation and with grandeur. Riding in the colours of Al Shaqab Racing, Al Ghadeer recorded his seventh Group race win and his fifth Group 1 for Purebred Arabians, the best level of racing. It is the second win in this race for his trainer, François Rohaut, based in Pau (Pyrenees – the Atlantic), who won the first-ever edition of this race in 2008 with Lahib. Impressive winner of the Gr.1 (PA) Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes de 4 Ans at Chantilly in June, the incredible Purebred Arabian colt Al Ghadeer (Al Mourtajez x Gharra’a by Matador 46

12) landed the Gr.1 (PA) Qatar Arabian World Cup. Carrying the colours of his owner Al Shaqab Racing and trained by master trainer Francois Rohaut, the four-year-old came into the race on the back of six successive victories including three Group 1 (PA). Al Ghadeer became one of the all-time greats in the Arabian racing by winning impressively the €1,000,000 Qatar sponsored contest at ParisLongchamp. Now a four time Group 1 (PA) winner, Al Ghadeer offered a fourth Gr.1 (PA) success for Al Shaqab Racing in the last forty eight hours. Al Ghadeer was never too far from the leaders of the field and travelled with sublime

ease of the 2000m contest. Entering the final straight and sill not pressed on by jockey Christophe Soumillon, the four-year-old was angled out wide of the leaders to win by two lengths under a hand and heels ride. The chasing Al Doha (Al Mourtajez x Topaze Du Croate by Dormane)), in the colours of HH Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani, who finished a clear second for trainer Thomas Fourcy and under jockey Olivier Peslier. The Abdulla Bin Fahad Al Attiyah-owned and Ch’Ezza (AF Albahar x Cherazade by Dormane), gave Francois Rohaut another prize in the race, as he under Maxime Guyon, took third. Jockey Christophe Soumillon said after the race:“I took a while to get him settled and unfortunately at the top of the hill when the pace slowed down, I had no much stirring as he blocked the bit on one side. So I decided to let him roll progressively. At the beginning of the straight I felt like I was on top of everyone. I didn’t want to ask him too much but then when I saw Olivier coming quickly on the outside to challenge us, I asked him to stride on a bit and he’s done it with ease. He’s a smart horse, He’s a real champion.”

With this victory, Al Shaqab Racing continues its foray at the Group 1 level reserved for purebred Arabians this weekend, just as Nour Al Maury won on Saturday, Sepetember 30, in the Qatar Arabian Trophy for Mares, while Afjan ex-Mahboop and Norma Al Maury respectively won on Friday, September 29, in Saint-Cloud, the Qatar Arabian Trophy for colts and the Qatar Arabian Trophy for fillies. “The Team has put their heart and souls into training the three horses who have responded here. I love Arabian horses; it is a joy. We have seen a champion. The Qataris do a lot for racing in France. They deserve the most respect. Al Ghadeer is a horse out of the ordinary. He deserves to win today. I hope that he remains healthy and well for a long time so that he can win all the big races in the future, one of which is this World Cup. He has an extraordinary mentality. He will go to the third stage of the Triple Crown in Doha this winter,” said trainer François Rohaut. Source: France Galop and QREC. Photos: Juhaim/QREC

Nour Al Mauri proves too good once again

The Gr.1 (PA) Qatar Arabian Trophy Des Juments, for 4YO fillies, saw the Al Shaqab-owned Nour Al Maury get her fourth straight Gr1 PA victory. Al Shaqab Racing continued their impressive series of wins in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend, September 30th and October 1st, held under Qatari sponsorship represented by the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC). Following the two Gr1 PA titles landed by their runners at Saint Cloud on Friday, excellence continued with Nour Al Maury (Azadi x Nectarina Al Maury by Jalnar Al Khalediah) carrying Al Shaqab Racing to a third victory in less than 24 hours when the Thomas Fourcy-trained filly took the Gr1 PA Qatar Arabian Trophy Des 48

Juments with Olivier Peslier in the saddle at ParisLongchamp on Saturday, September 30. Khalifa bin Mohammed Al Attiyah, QREC Board Member, presented the trophies to the winners. Nour Al Maury, the hot favourite and Al Shaqab Racing representative, won the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments and a race that the Qatari outfit had never won before; which is particularly unusual as the record books reveal that Al Shaqab Racing has come up trumps in the vast majoritý of European Group 1 PA races. The filly, trained by Thomas Fourcy, a professional handler based near Royan (Charente Maritime) and responsible for last year’s winner, was coming off three consecutive Group PA 1 wins: the pinnacle of excellence in horse racing.

Nour Al Maury was bred by Renée-Laure Koch in the Haute-Garonne region: the same academy responsible for breeding the winner of the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches, a Group 1 PA race reserved for 3-year-old PA fillies, at Saint-Cloud 24 hours earlier. Trained by Thomas Fourcy, the Purebred Arabian filly was sent off the short-priced favourite. The four-year-old was an excellent winner on her three previous starts and showed huge ability when beating top class mare Lady Princess (General) earlier this year. With Olivier Peslier in the saddle, Nour Al Maury was prominent behind the leader of the 2000m contest. Forced to switch wide at the beginning of the home straight after leader Casbar Meteora (Nieshan) got injured, Nour Al Maury was quickly able to get back on terms to win a shade cosily. Gorat Aeen (Azadi) ran a stormer in second in the colours of HE Sheikha Reem bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani for trainer F. Rohaut and jockey Maxime Guyon.

The second favourite, Ghadah (Azadi), who was another representative of Al Shaqab Racing took third for the winning trainer and jockey Faleh Bughenaim. Speaking after the race, Peslier said, “I had a good race but the two horses in front of me completely stopped. I didn’t feel comfortable but I took my time and I knew she was able accelerate again from this incident. I wish they went a stronger gallop as she would have benefited from it but she won and she is very talented.” Thomas Fourcy said after the race, “I was a bit worried about the wide draw but the magic hands of Olivier Peslier and the talent of the filly made the difference. I didn’t want to run between her first start and today as she needed to come into this race fresh. She’s well-bred and I never had any doubt about her ability.” Source: France Galop and QREC. Afjan wins Qatar Arabian Trophy Des Poulains

Al Shaqab Racing’s horses made an impressive start for the racing action associated with the 2023 renewal of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, as they topped the two Arabian races for fillies and colts at Saint Cloud, Paris on Friday 29th September. tar Arabian Trophy Des Poulains, which followed on from his excellent third place in the Gr.2 (PA) French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge – Poulains at La Teste earlier this month. Trained by Francois Rohaut, the Purebred Arabian colt was one the fancied contenders for the 2,000m contest at Saint-Cloud. Still lightly raced, the three-year-old was having his only fourth start and is now a Gr.1 (PA) winner. With Christophe Soumillon in the saddle, Afjan was held up second last of the twelve runners through the early stages of the contest. Still a lot to find on the leader on the turn for home, Afjan gradually improved his position showing a plenty of determination to beat and reverse the form with Extra Time (Valiant Boy) in second. Kanti De Bozouls (No Risk Al Maury) took third. Speaking after the race, the winning trainer said: “We made a mistake last time out at La Teste when he made the running, he’s a horse that we need to ride cold at the back of field as he can be a bit nervous. We know he has a good turn of foot and that our main dangers today were the ones that finished ahead of us last time out at La Teste. I was worried about the David Morrison-trained Extra Time who ran a remarkable race once again.”

Norma Al Maury wins Gr 1 PA race

Al Shaqab Racing’s horses made an impressive start for the racing action associated with the 2023 renewal of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, as they topped the two Arabian races for fillies and colts at Saint Cloud, Paris, on September 29. In the colours of Al Shaqab Racing, Afjan took the Gr1 Qatar Arabian Trophy Des Poulains (colts) and Norma Al Maury dominated the Gr1 Qatar Arabian Trophy Des Pouliches (fillies). In doing so, the two 3-year-olds have declared themselves the leaders of their generation, re-confirming Qatar’s leadership in Arabian racing worldwide. Following the two races, Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s (QREC) Chairman Issa bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi presented the trophies to the winners. Recently purchased by owner Al Shaqab Racing, the three-year-old Purebred Arabian, Norma Al Maury (Azadi) improved quickly to land the Gr.1 (PA) Qatar Arabian Des Pouliches at Saint-Cloud only 30 minutes after Ajfan secured the colts’ trophy for the same owner. Trained by Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte and patiently ridden by Olivier Peslier, the filly was having her second start and despite having shown greenness when the pace lifted, Norma Al Maury delivered with tenacity. Kept towards the outside of the pack, Norma Al Maury stayed on strongly to win by one and a quarter lengths in front of Di-

vana Chica (Majd Al Arab). Alrasha (Mahabb) took third. Norma Al Maury is now a Gr.1 (PA) winner and remains unbeaten from two lifetime starts. The winning trainer said after the race, “I was a bit worried about the wide draw but the magic hands of Olivier Peslier and the talent of the filly made the difference. I didn’t want to run between her first start and today as she needed to come into this race fresh. She’s well-bred and I never had any doubt about her ability.” Bred by Mlle Renee-Laure Koch, she is by Azadi and out of Nemosie Al Maury, sister to Gr.1 PA winner and sire No Risk Al Maury. Races upgraded and prize mone

Saudi Cup meeting prize fund rises to USD37.35m with Neom Turf a

sees seven newly upgraded Listed ra A raft of upgrades covering the 2023-2024 Riyadh season and 2024 Saudi Cup have been announced by the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia, with prize money for the world’s richest weekend of racing boosted to $37.35m across the Riyadh racing extravaganza. Next year’s Saudi Cup, to be held Friday 23 and Saturday 24 February 2024 at King Abdulaziz Racecourse, will include a new prize fund worth an additional $2m compared to the 2023 renewal. The increase reflects the upgrades of the 2,100m Neom Turf Cup and the 1351 Turf Sprint to global Group 2 while the 2100m Al Mneefah Cup for Purebred Arabians will also run as a Group 1 for the first time. The Neom Turf Cup, which was won in February in impressive style by the John & Thady Gosden-trained Mostahdaf, who has gone on to become a dual Group 1 winner this season, and the 1351 Turf Sprint, won by Japanese runner, Bathrat Leon, have both seen their prize funds boosted from $1.5m to $2m. On the Friday card, the Al Mneefah Handicap saw an increase from $1m to $1.5m, while the 1800m Jockey Club Local Handicap on the dirt, receives a prize money boost of $500,000 to $1.5m The Saudi International Handicap, a race for Thoroughbreds from Part II and Part III racing jurisdictions moves from the Friday to the Saturday of Saudi Cup, forms part of a nine-race card. Alongside the upgrades to the Saudi Cup meeting, further improvements to the domestic Riyadh season have also been announced, including the introduction to the international pattern of the Crown Prince Cup (December 16, 2023) and the King Faisal Cup (January 13, 2024) which will be run as Listed races. In another key alteration, the Listed Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Cup (January 27, 2024) has been reduced in distance to the same 1800m as The Saudi Cup from 2000m, to better reflect its status as a key qualifier for the $20m contest. In addition, the Riyadh season, which is set to begin on October 26 and run until March 16, 2024, will see the total number of races increase to 700, with an additional 66 Purebred Arabian races added to the calendar. Each race meeting will be extended to 12 races, with 10 for Thoroughbreds and two for Purebred Arabians. 52

There will also be three other new Cup races for Thoroughbreds added to the Riyadh calendar, with the Imam Mohammed Bin Saud Cup, worth $240,000, a notable addition to the Kings’ Cups Festival on 13 January 2024, with the other new Cup races being the $80,000 Prince Saad Bin Abdulrahman Bin Faisal Cup (19 January 2024) and the $80,000 Prince Fahad Bin Jalooey Cup (10 February). Al-Hatab (Tabarak x Altesse Kossack by Marwan) secured a hat-trick of wins at Lingfield Park when winning on September 26 the Emirates Breeders (0-75) Handicap over a mile and a quarter, ridden by Mohammed Tabti. Just like ten days ago at the same track, the pair forged ahead in the home straight to win by two and a quarter lengths, from Storm Troupour and Rhys Clutterbuck in second. Tabti, who has partnered the five-year-old son of Tabarak to all his victories commented, “He’s so relaxed in his races now, he just switches off. All I have to do is touch the reins and he’s back on the bridle again. There was only a small gap, but he went straight through it.” Trainer Peter Hammerlsey, who also co-owns the horse in partnership with his breeder Julie Kelway commented, “We couldn’t be more pleased with Al-Hatab, he’s really grown up Arabian Horse Intl

and Mohammed gave him another lovely ride today. That’ll be it for the season now for him and my other runner Coljani, and we look forward to next year.” James Owen Racing’s Jaahez, partnered by Lily Pinchin who was favourite as they went to post, was withdrawn at the start for failing to load, for the second time in his career. Genny Haynes, Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) Chief Executive Officer said, “ARO is delighted for Julie and Pete on their third consecutive success with Al-Hatab today, as well as another win for Mohammed. Al-Hatab and Mohammed Tabti win in Lingfield Park

Al-Hatab made it back-to-back wins on September 16 at Lingfield Park when winning the £4,000 www.wathbastallions.com (0-55) handicap over a mile and five furlongs, ridden by Mohammed Tabti. The pair pulled clear to win by a decisive four lengths, from Aloof ridden by amateur Lewis Saunders, who finished six lengths ahead of Heritage Valentino and fellow amateur, Jamie Gambin. This was also the second win on the five-yearold for Tabti who commented, “He jumped well from the stalls, we had a good lead. He was nice and settled, going really well and when I asked him to go, he picked up the bridle well, he had a really good turn of foot. I don’t think the step up in trip bothered him, he’s a really nice horse, with a very good mind.” Trainer Peter Hammerlsey who also co-owns the horse in partnership with his breeder Julie Kelway commented, “We’re really pleased with Al-Hatab (Tabarak x Altesse Kossack by Marwan), we thought the step up in trip would suit him, he settles so well now. He’s like his broth-

er, Al-Tabari, he’s got a lovely turn of foot. They’re very similar, the moment he learned to settle, it was the making of him. Mohammed gave him a lovely ride.” Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Racing Festival commented, “We congratulate Al-Hatab and all the winning connections of the race at Lingfield today. We are delighted that the race has been won by a small breeder, as this is one of the main aims of the Wathba Stallions series, to encourage the breeding of Arabian racehorses around the globe.” Genny Haynes, Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) Chief Executive Officer said, “ARO is delighted for Julie and Pete on their success with Al-Hatab today, as well as another win for Mohammed. We are also pleased that the first three home are British breds who will earn their breeders cash reward as part of our breeders scheme this season.” Source: Arabian Racing Organisation. Thaydah Athbah maintained her unbeaten record

Thaydah Athbah ridden by ten times UAE champion jockey Tadhg O’Shea maintained her unbeaten record when winning the £20,000 Group 3 PA HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Cup at Haydock Park on September 9 over a mile. The Athbah Racing homebred came home four and a quarter lengths ahead of Upstart Crow and Miss Teagan Padgett, with Mayfair and Marco Ghiani a further four lengths back in third. Thaydah Athbah (Albahar x Djanet Monlau by Dormane) was the pick of three entries from current leading ARO owner, Athbah Racing and is trained by two-time ARO leading trainer and former five-time ARO leading jockey, Phil Collington. Collington has won all four of the previous running’s of this race, three of which were for Athbah Racing, and three were ridden by Tadhg O’Shea. O’Shea commented, “She’s a very nice filly, Phil has always held her in high regard. This was her first time in Group company, but it was lovely, just a hands and heels ride. She’s going to have stiffer assignments to come, I think the plan is to go to Longchamp, and I think she’s well up to that. She’s a huge filly and I think she’ll only get better with age. Collington commented, “I’m very pleased with that performance. Watching her there I’d say she could probably do with a bit easier ground, though she won on quick at Windsor. The further she goes the better I think, she’ll have an entry in the Fillies’ Group 1 on Arc weekend and beyond that, she could be an Al Mneefah type of filly. 56

Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Racing Festival commented, “We have really enjoyed the welcome that everyone at Haydock Park has given us for the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Cup and we congratulate Tadhg O’Shea, Athbah Racing and Phil Collington for winning today with Thaydah Athbah.” “The Festival sponsors 153 races globally this year, as well as the World Arabian Horse Racing Forum and the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown which is held in Abu Dhabi in December.” Genny Haynes, ARO Chief Executive Officer said, “For over ten years the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Racing Festival has generously supported our racing for which ARO is extremely grateful. We are delighted for Athbah, Tadhg, Phil and his team for producing Thaydah Athbah in such good form to maintain their great record in this race, and we hope that she will continue to progress in Group company and uphold the form of UK Arabian racing globally. “We are also grateful for the support from Haydock Park racecourse and Brendan Waterworth from Racing Welfare who presented the Best Turned Out Award to Oliver Harcourt for Mayfair.” Source: Arabian Racing Organisation. James Owen scored a one-two in the Emirates Breeders

Newmarket based trainer James Owen scored a one-two with his homebred half-sisters, Mayfair and Victoria in the Emirates Breeders (0-70) Handicap at Brighton. Mayfair (Al Tair x Dolfina D’Ibos), partnered by Miss Rhea Betts, won by one and a half lengths from Victoria (RB Burn x Dolfina D’Ibos), ridden by Miss Teagan Padgett, both jockeys are amateurs who are attached to Owen’s stable. Betts, whose first winner came at the track last year, was delighted, saying, “It’s lovely to have my family here, I think they’re my good luck charms! Mayfair can normally travel quite well at the start and then we often seem to get outpaced but three out she was still traveling well and I thought I’d be able to stay with the others. Two out I decided to kick on and hope that she stays and she did, bless her! We’ve kept her a little bit fresh, and I think that’s been the key to her. Quite a few people ride her at home, including me, but I love her.” Commenting by phone, Owen said, “That was lovely our first ever homebred winner and lovely for Rhea to get her first win of the season. She’s been improving massively every ride this year, was very strong in the finish and looked good on a small horse, who isn’t the easiest. Mayfair will probably go for the 0-75 at Lingfield next.”

Of the second he said, “I thought Victoria ran really well, but will be better next year when she strengthens up. We’ll put her away for next season now.” Owen trained the dam, Dolfina D’Ibos to win three races during the 2017 season, where she was crowned leading Arabian and leading mare. Mayfair is her first foal, by Al Tair, whilst Victoria is from the first crop of RB Burn and is his first runner in Europe. Genny Haynes, Arabian Racing Organisation Chief Executive Officer said, “ARO warmly congratulates James Owen and all the team at Green Ridge Stables, along with Rhea and Teagan. It’s also particularly pleasing to see yet another of our owners securing their first homebred winner, and to have a one-two from the same mare is also an achievement of note. “We thank the Emirates Breeders for their support of our grassroots competitors, who we are also assisting through our ARO breeders’ scheme. The scheme gives a financial awards to UK registered ARO breeders whose horses finish in the first three places of all our races, so that will be an additional bonus for James.” Source: Arabian Racing Organisation. The 2023 Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) season concluded at Royal Windsor this evening with the £4,000 Arabian Horse Organization (AHO) Challenge Cup over a mile. A three quarters of a length win by Mutwahhej Athbah, ridden by George Wood gave trainer Phil Collington his second consecutive ARO Trainers title. This was Collington’s third overall and added to the seasonal tally of wins by his principal patron, Athbah Racing, whose retention of the ARO leading owners title had already been confirmed. Collington also trained the second, Garmoosha, ridden by Kieran O’Neill who finished well clear of Coljani and Darragh Keenan. After the race Newmarket based Collington commented: “I’m pleased overall, it was obviously going to be a bit of an indifferent race on this ground. I thought Coljani, who’s comparatively experienced would take it up, my two were a little bit lost on the ground initially, but once they warmed to it and got into the race, they finished off really well. It will be nice to see them both on better ground; they will definitely come on for this. “It’s a nice way to end the season with another trainers title, obviously I’m pleased for the staff and my all owners, particularly Ath58

bah Racing, who’ve got two nice three-yearolds here.” Genny Haynes, ARO Chief Executive Officer said, “ARO congratulates Phil and Athbah Racing for their win with Muttwahej Athbah and for another successful season racing with ARO in the UK. This has included two domestic PA Group wins, as well as a very close fourth in the Group 1PA Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments on Arc weekend, France’s equivalent of the Arabian Oaks, which upholds our form overseas.” “We also thank the Arabian Horse Organization for their generous sponsorship of this, our final race of the season. We are also very grateful to Racing Welfare for the support of our stable staff and to their representative Katy Ferguson who presented Peter Hammersley with the leading yard award for the most Best Turned Out winners, and his groom Sue Wileman, for the highest number of individual winners.” Source: Arabian Racing Organisation

Brazilians Pinheiro and Paiva shine at the beginning of the season in Al Ain

Sandro Paiva and Kanaille De Faust

The 2023-24 Emirates Racing Season began at Al Ain on October 28 and the card opened with Musabbeh Al Mheiri and Ryan Curatolo delivering the first blows as trainer and jockey respectively, the pair combining to strike in the Wathba Stallions Cup for Private Owners 1400m maiden (4yos) with Alhebi, who put a length and three fourths between himself and Rokberry (Ibrahim Al Hadhrami/Connor Beasley), changing gears in the straight after sitting off the pace set by AF Yatwa’ad. Ahazij was a head back in third for Abubakar Daud and Sandro Paiva. Paiva claimed his first success in the subsequent 1400m Al Qattara maiden (3yos) aboard the Adil Mouchahi-trained Kanaille De Faust, who sneaked to the front along the rail when making the turn and kicked clear in the straight 60

Arabian Horse Intl

unchallenged to win by a commanding threeand-a-half lengths from Abdallah Al Hammadi’s Magic Touch, who closed in late with Beasley in the saddle. The Al Ain programme witnessed maiden after maiden play out and the fourth consecutive one of the evening, the Al Jahili over 1600m (4yo+), produced a fourth different winning pair, Al Jahoori and Bernardo Pinheiro hitting the target with racecourse debutante Ayyash. Pinheiro and Ayyash sat just behind the leaders and looked for room making the turn, with the rider cutting right and asking for a solid effort with a little over 400m left. Five of the runners contested the lead, but Ayyash, a son of General, gained the advantage quickly and pulled away from the rest to finish two-and-three-quarters of a length clear of Al

Bernado Pinheiro and Ayyash

Hammadi’s Al Moatasem Al Balushi-guided Will Power. O’Shea was a length-and-a-half back in third yet again on AF Estatha, trained by Oertel. Bernardo Pinheiro claimed a quick double, having timed his ride to perfection aboard Ibrahim Al Hadhrami’s Taj Al Izz in the Al Masoudi (4yo+ 0-80), the first of two handicaps on the card. Racing 1600m, Pinheiro and his mount found themselves towards the back of the field, well behind the lead even as another Al Hadhrami trainee Ares De Gion (Al Moatasem Al Balushi) hit the front early in the straight. If Al Balushi thought he had wrapped things up he was proved very wrong as Pinheiro and Taj Al Izz came up with a swooping run from way back to lead in the final strides and win

by a length and a quarter. Al Hadhrami claimed a 1-2-3 after Fakhr ran in third under Saif Al Balushi, a further four-and-a-half length adrift. Following the example of his compatriot, Sandro Paiva made sure to split the riding honours with him as he rode assertively from start to finish along the stands’ side rail to ensure Abubakar Daud’s Al Gharbi won the 1000m Zakhir handicap (4yo+, 0-70) by two-and-three-quarters of a length from Asslan Al Reef, trained by Khalifa Al Neyadi and ridden by Ateeq Al Katheeri. A further three fourths of a length back in third was Qaiss Aboud’s AF Ramz, the ride of Pinheiro. Source and photos: Emirates Racing Authority

After a thrilling final kilometers, Sabrina Arnold of Germany on Easy El Boheira won a thrilling ride in the final kilometers to win the individual gold medal at the FEI Endurance European Championship 2023, September 7, in Ermelo, the Netherlands. María Álvarez Pontón of Spain and Bolchoi El Akim were the silver medal winners, a mere two seconds behind the winners, and Philippe Tomas of France and Biwaka De Chalendrat earned the individual bronze medal. France captured team gold with four riders in the top 10. Spain, the defending champion, won the team silver medal. Germany sealed the team bronze. This event is the pinnacle of the season for European Endurance athletes, with many focusing their entire competitive season on it. Sabrina and Easy El Boheira, a nine-year-old bay mare, maintained a steady pace throughout the day, at their own pace, quietly staying with the leaders. They left for the final loop in fourth place and then won in the thrilling ride against María and Bolchoi El Akim, a 12-yearold grey gelding. Both women are powerhouses in the sport of Endurance, with numerous wins and championship titles. Meanwhile, France has consistently built their reputation for riding strategically and as a team. They won the silver at the FEI Endurance European Championships in 2021, also in Ermelo, and gold earlier this year in Butheeb (UAE) at the FEI Endurance World Championship. Three of their horse and athlete combinations from Butheeb were on the team in Ermelo. “It was difficult, but it was our strategy to stay all together and have a safe ride with speed,” says Jean-Michel Grimal, France chef d’equipe. “I was very happy with my team; they did a very good job. Spain is very strong and have been leading this sport for 15 years now, I have respect for them, but we are very happy to be in front. We are the World Champions at the start of the year and European Champions now.” Endurance is a distance equestrian sport that tests horses and athletes physically and mentally. It involves strategy and tactics, with the welfare of the horse coming first. The athletes and their horses train carefully for events such as the FEI Endurance European Championship with assistance from the Chef d’Équipe, team veterinarian, and farrier. 75 horse and athlete combinations started the event. The loop distances were 38-km, 22km, 29 km, 20-km, 31-km and 20-km respectively, with mandatory rest periods after each loop. The six tracks went through forests, past open pastures on tree-lined roads, and along beautiful heather-filled moors. Riders maintained a steady pace throughout the day, working with their horses to get through each phase of the competition, before increasing the pace 66

on the final phase. Crew members met their horses and riders at various points throughout the course to offer additional cooling, and riders cheerfully greeted spectators as they passed by. The last of the FEI Endurance main events for 2023 is the Pan American Championships for Seniors, Young Riders and Juniors in Llay Llay, Chile in November. The Endurance calendar is still busy with rides until the end of the year as horses and riders look ahead to the 2024 season, which includes the FEI Endurance World Championship in September 2024 in Monpazier, France. Competition Director Viorel Dabija told us that he is proud that this year’s edition of the Shagya Arab Cup is officially sponsored by Emirates International Endurance Village - Abu Dhabi, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zaied Al Nahian, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of the Presidential Court, represented by Arabian Horse Intl

„It is the most important national and international equestrian competition held in Romania. Equestrian endurance is an increasingly popular sport, suitable for all ages, it is a sport in nature, it develops team spirit, develops the spirit of competition, the sporting effort is managed with tactical intelligence. The relationship with the horse must be perfect. Emphasis is placed on the horse’s health, so after 20 or 40 km loops you arrive at the Vet gate, where the team of referees checks the horse’s

heart rate, after which it leaves the race if the pulse value is below 64 beats per minute. We have tried to respond to all requests from the judging team and the participants. We were concerned that the courses should be groomed, cleaned, to create more comfort for the participants. This year we enjoyed the support of the Ilfov County Council as well, because we want a well-organized organization, a material base that meets the requirements of international standards”, said the mayor of Buftea, Gheorghe Pistol. As the standards of the competition were set at a high level, the International Equestrian Federation decided that the organizer of the World Junior Championship 2025 will be Shagya Sports Club. The sporting event Shagya Arab Cup comprises the CEN 80 km and CEN1* 100 km National Endurance Championship (decides the Romanian national champion) and the CEI1* 100 km, CEIYJ1*100 km International Endurance Competition (the race that counts a lot for the European Junior Championships, for the qualifications), CEI2* 120 km and CEI3* 140 km. Christophe Giraldi, talented breeder and passionate about endurance has gone

“A beautiful person”; “A nice guy”; “Always with his heart on his sleeve”; “A good, generous and upright man”. These are the words that come to mind whenever we remember of Christophe Giraldi, who passed away on October 19th. He began his beautiful story with endurance in 1994 with his broodmare Arabe-Barbe Touchka II, whose second foal, Georgat (CS, x Out Law Persik), was a top winner. The same year, in 2005, Georgat was crowned World Champion in Dubai with Barbara Lissarrague, who was racing for France at the time, then European Open Champion at Compiègne under the saddle of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al-Maktoum (UAE)! Today, Rouchka de Luc (DsA, x Khadar), another son of Touchka II, is still racing at eighteen, and has racked up some fine performances under the saddle of Dutch riders Joyce van den Berg and Marijke Visser. Christophe Giraldi was present at the Ermelo European Championships in the Netherlands last September, accompanying him and Marijke. As a pasionnate, he loved to see his horses perform on the track. He even travelled to Abu Dabi to follow Touchkal de Luc (DsA, x Djin Lo-

tois) in the highly prized President Cup. Since 2020, the breeder based in Luc-la-Primaube, Aveyron, has raised seventeen foals, while Touchka II’s grandchildren are starting to perform, as are Chelsea and Ducka de Luc (Khadar x Djin Lotois). Christophe Giraldi had begun to pass on his knowledge and his know-how to his son Enzo, who is just as passionate as his father was, and bequeathed to him the fine broodmares Touchkal and Uchka de Luc (DsA, Djin Lotois). The breeder from Aveyron loved working with his family. In 2015, he created the Sellerie du Rouergue, where his wife Florence and daughter Lou work, and who will continue this wonderful adventure: “Everything will continue as before. We’ll meet up again at races and competitions” claims Florence. At the age of sixty-one, the man’s heart gave out, sowing great sadness among those who came into contact with this rare and endearing person. Many enthusiasts will miss his kindness, his willingness to help and his zest for living. Text: Anne Jonchery Arabian Horse Intl

Mauricio and his horse Sheick from Patagonia conquered Llay–Llay

The last time we visited our beloved track of Llay – Llay before the Pan American Championship and also the last opportunity to meet the qualification requirements for the Panam was on September 8. For some it’s all or nothing. The protagonist of this story is a stranger but an old well-known horseman from Patagonia. He took off from his homeland 24 hours before the start. Determined to fulfill the objective that he set for himself with his team; he had only one thing on his mind: Win the race! The road to completing this idea was considerably difficult, not only because of the competition around him but the track was particularly challenging. The rains that lashed the terrain for days left marks that as riders we had to constantly avoid. This gave a special flavor to each stage as it tested our riders to never lose concentration. Some commented on this as a problem. Others, like “the Kaiken”, saw it as an opportunity. With a life spent on horses and accustomed to riding in all types of weather conditions, he knew how to take advantage of this to his advantage. And navigating through these circumstances he was able to add minutes in his favor. For the last stage of the 120 km he already had a considerable advantage, however now came the fast white stage. Flat and dry stage. Change of strategy even though victory was already in the bag. Mauricio Rogel Silva on the back of Sheick was looking for more. Now it was about the Pan American Championship and discovering what the ceiling of this tremendous horse from Haras la Compañía is. He set it to an average 22km/h and completed the final stage in a flash, marking an overwhelming 41-minute lead to second place. Undisputed winner of the race and also meets all the requirements to be nominated for

the national team for the 2023 Pan American Championship. It has been an unpleasant season for André Álvarez; 9 months had to pass for him to get back on the podium, better with a first place and Best Condition, on the back of the exemplary HF Filipo. 8 in the morning and 6 pairs faced each other in the 100 km adult category; among which was André Álvarez, who was determined to get the best of this season and who better to accompany him in this than the exemplary HF Filipo, who already knew of triumphs in the distance and on the same track. During the first 60 km, the pair composed of Josefina Brandt and Macao made it clear that it would not be an easy task. It was in the third and demanding red stage where Álvarez came out to demand a little more from his horse and would begin to pull the strings of the race, remaining 25 minutes behind his closest competitor, since the pair that defends the colors of Las Palmas from Ritoque, they were no longer in the race. The clock showed almost 2:30 p.m. and the Hard Bone Team duo set out in search of the last 20 km to ensure their victory and in almost an hour and fifteen minutes they crossed the finish line. End of the story, lower the checkered flag, triumph and Best Condition for the horse bred and owned by Haras Fortaleza. Second place was obtained by Melanie Padilla on the backs of AS Yo-Yo and the rider Josefina Maturana who took third place with Toba Dolfina by definition from the experienced María Paz Vargas on the backs of Triana. Sardegna Endurance Festival 2023 ends with applause and smiles

Costanza Laliscia riding Assim du Barthas and Mariachiara Fagiani riding Feria de Vergnes

In the evocative amphitheater of the Horse Country Resort Congress & SPA in Arborea, last Saturday 23 September, with the awards ceremony, the curtain fell on Sardegna Endurance Festival 2023. With the successful format promoted by Ala Birdi Equincenter, another sports page has been written in the Gulf of Oristano, now a territory devoted to and accustomed to endurance. The rich race programme, test-event of the European Young Riders Championship and the 2024 Young Horses World Championship, was completed by the penultimate appointment with the FISE Circuit and Italian Young Horses Cup as well as by the presence of Masaf (Ministero dell’agricoltura, della sovranità alimentare e delle foreste) and ANICA (Associ92

azione Nazionale Italiana Cavallo Arabo) which contributed in important way to give prestige to the event. On the day when summer passed the baton to autumn, the weather tried to ruin the party by surprising everyone at dusk on the pre-race Friday by performing a real water bomb. At 2.00 am the organizing committee, having counted the damage suffered to the structures of the veterinary gate, gathered around itself all the workers available at the Horse Resort, who, keeping faith with the strength of the Sardinian heart, took action to present to the first riders at the departure at 6.30 in the morning, a refurbished parterre. The test event therefore started without any problems and gave breathtaking views to

the lucky athletes who were able to enjoy the beauty of the area as well as a fast and safe route. The multi-medal winner Costanza Laliscia, riding Assim du Barthas, closed the CEI2* at an average of 17.04 km per hour. Together with the Umbrian rider, her regional colleague Mariachiara Fagiani crossed the finish line with Feria de Vergnes who won the CEI2YJ1*. Completing the CEI2* podium was the Sardinian Paola Musio with Una Lady and the French Sandra Mazzoni with Hanima du Cavallon. Silver and bronze in the CEIYJ2* for the Friulian and son of art Nicholas Scola with Ciliegio della Bosana and for the Aosta Valley Giorgia Pisano with Zagaia dei Laghi. The international races ended with the two 100 km. won for the CEI1* senior by the French Jennifer Noll Shumacher with Alma and by the Sardinian Marica Anna Marras with Byron del Ma in the young rider. In the senior CEI1* Emanuela Ita Marzotto gets on the podium with Akela d’Acacia followed by Luca Mura from Sardinia with Abba di Gallura. duss and for the Sardinian Maria Letizia Grazia Orecchioni on Amore. Representatives of local and regional institutions, as well as the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation, Masaf (Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry) and the ANICA (Italian National Arabian Horse Association). With music and flags flying, the various winners and finishers took turns on the podium and were awarded by the Honorable and Regional Councilor Emanuele Cera, by the mayor of Arborea Manuela Pintus, by the President of the FISE Sardinia Regional Committee Stefano Meloni, by Sonia Negri FISE secretariat, by Masaf Inspector Pier Luigi Grassi and Chiara Giacomello, ANICA councillor. With the excellent aperitif dinner offered by the local sponsor Cantine Spanu, after having thanked the technical sponsors of the event Setzi and Equiplanet, all that remains is to wait for September next year when dozens of flags will be waving at the poolside of the Horse Country Resort, for the two eagerly awaited international events by FEI (International Equestrian Federation). RFI Arabians achieve third consecutive victory in the Brazilian Breeders’ Cup 2023 The 27th edition of the Brazilian Breeders Cup 2023 rocked the Centro Hípico de Tatuí, in the interior of São Paulo, bringing together on Friday, November 10th, the pinnacle of national Arabian horse breeding in an exciting Halter competition. The highlight of the event was the RFI Arabians breeder, from Itapetininga (SP), which won its third consecutive victory in the event, promoted by the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA). Rodrigo Foz Forte, head of the RFI Arabians, expressed his emotion at the achievement: “The emotion is the greatest possible, not only because it is the third consecutive year, but the fifth championship in our 33-year history. An achievement alongside my family, which is the most important thing we have, with Leopoldo Coutinho, our friend and consultant for 27 years, is a huge happiness. It is recognition of dedicated work, for everything we have been doing for so long, so I am very happy with this result”. The RFI Arabians’ victory takes on an even more special meaning, since, by winning the trophy for the third consecutive time, the breeder secures the Brazilian Breeders Cup traveling trophy definitively. Fabio Alberto Amorosino, from Haras Serondella, also stood out in the event by taking second place and Flávia Maria Ramalho Torres, from Haras FT, took third place. The Brazilian Breeders’ Cup is the most coveted title, since only breeders, who are also owners, can participate in Halter competitions. Thus, 98

Arabian Horse Intl

they presented their four best animals of their own breed that competed for this award that ranks the main breeders in Brazil. In addition to the title of best Brazilian breeder of the Arabian breed, RFI Arabians also took home two other awards during the event: the title of Premium Cup Top Ten Champion with RFI Pavaroti (RFI Unique x Preferida Rach by *Bandit SRA) and the title of Stallion Cup Champion with RFI Unique (AF Maden x RFI Ultraa Almaktub by RFI Maktub). Leopoldo Coutinho, consultant at RFI Arabians, shared his enthusiasm about RFI Unique’s victory: “It’s fantastic to see an animal born from a thought out cross, evolve like this and go beyond your best expectations. And now we see him in a new stage, winning and continuing within the evolution that we want at the stud farm and adding quality, so it’s fantastic, besides he’s charismatic, he’s gentle and it’s a delight to be around him”. For the future, Rodrigo Forte assures that RFI Arabians will continue to dedicate themselves with passion: “We will continue to work hard, continue to dedicate ourselves a lot, because this is a passion in our family”, he concluded emotionally. Organized by the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA) in partnership with the Rural Equestrian Riders Brazilian Association (ABHIR), the Jumping and Rural Equestrian events had 60 participants. The president of ABHIR, Carlos Gracias Júnior, emphasized the versatility and adaptability of Arabian horses when participating in Jumping and Rural Equestrian competitions. “What we were able to see in this first weekend of the event was the versatility of the Arabian horse jumping, doing rural equestrian, and from the professional riding to children doing the school category. This proves that the Arabian horse fits into all categories and for all ages”. According to Ricardo Jamil Saliba, Vice-President of Competition at ABCCA, the Arabian horse is a truly versatile breed in the equine world. Its performance capacity covers a wide variety of sporting disciplines, standing out in jumping, barrel racing, goal competition and several other disciplines. “This exhibition is for anyone who wants to see the most complete horse in the world in action. Entrance to the Tatuí Equestrian Center was open to the public in the city and region, and free of charge. We had the presence of people, as well as breeders and exhibitors, who were surprised by the beauty and functionality of the Arabian horse on the track”, declared Saliba. On Wednesday, November 8th, it was the Arabian horse’s turn to show its versatility in the Six Bases and Three Barrels events. The 3rd National Arabian Sport Horse Exhibition recorded a historic feat in the breed’s equestrian scene. Laura da Fonseca and her horse Folhetim Pat achieved a new nation-

al record in the Six Bases race, with a time of 21s216, competing in the Amateur category. The previous record in the category was held by Mauri da Fonseca, Laura’s uncle. “We train and compete together, so that’s part of it. I’m very happy to overcome it, because my uncle is an inspiration to me in the world of sport and he has achieved so much. So, for me, it’s gratifying to beat his record”, says Laura. The Six Base tests of the 3rd National Arabian Sport Horse Exhibition were carried out in partnership with the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA) and the National Functional Arabian Horse Association (ANCAF). According to the organizers, the discipline’s competitions saw the impressive participation of competitors from Rio Grande do Sul, highlighting the region’s talent and commitment to equestrian sport. Above all, through the work done by the Gaúcha Arabian Horse Association (AGCA), which promotes the Domados do Pampa Championship, which aims to promote the functionality of the breed.

ANCAF Circuit (National Functional Arabian Horse Association)

Closing the exhibitions in Tatuí with mastery, the competitions of the 2nd stage of the ANCAF Circuit were held. Brunno Zanotta, president of the entity, says that the tests had a total of 90 entries, including categories and tests that were carried out with younger horses. “There was a very good demand and acceptance from the people who watched the tests. I want to thank Rodrigo Forte (president of ABCCA) and the entire Board of Directors for the support they are giving to the saddle Arabian horse, as well as for the Three Barrels and Six Bases events. And also for everything he has done, for his commitment to ensuring that the Arabian horse is growing in the Brazilian market”, emphasizes Zanotta. Source Natália de Oliveira/Agência Cavalus. POLAND MAJOR PRO EUROPEAN CHAM

ALSA (Kahil Al Shaqab x Alameda)

On October 29th the third and final day at the Scuderia Borgo La Caccia in Bedizzole (Brescia) for the weekend reserved for the ECAHO events organized by Associazione Nazionale Italiana Cavallo Arabo (ANICA): the European Championship 2023 and the B International Cup. With even greater interest than the previous two days, the “Finals” of the European Championship 2023 obviously took center stage: Poland was still a great protagonist, among the Italians a special prize for the Scah Arabians and several successes in the Finals of the B International Cup. The event , which had the Katara International Arabian Horse Festival as its main sponsor, received great enthusiasm from the many foreign operators: in particular, the new location of the European Championship, that of the Scuderia Borgo La Caccia, was much appreciated and praised, to the point of enticing the foreigners to “recommend” it for future editions of the continental review. Chat With the Breeder

It

’s not a bird; it’s not a plane, much less Superman. So little a rare avis! So who is the Arabian horse breeder? He can be found in all cantons of Brazil, whether as the owner of a single animal or with more than three hundred. Only one fuel moves him: the passion for the breed, with all its characteristics of strength, resistance, rusticity, maneuverability, interactivity, intelligence — and I will certainly fail to mention many other qualities. Oh yes, there’s beauty too! To get a glimpse of the peculiarities and idiosyncrasies of the Arabian breeder, the curious can watch the programs of the Arabian Horse Breeder Brazilian Association (ABCCA), Chat With the Breeder, which interviews these wonderful men (and women) about their flying machines from all over the world country in an informal meeting. They are people like us and, therefore, they can be demystified. An initiative of the ABCCA Executive Board, these are live interviews led by journalist Verônica Formigoni. So far, Dr. Jairo Queiroz Jorge from Faveiros Stables/MS has participated in them; Adriana de Moura from Cascatas Stables/SP; Enrico Carlone from EFC Arabians/SP; Dr. Elias Vanin from Estância do Vale Stables/PR; Newton Augusto Sabarense from Brasília Stables/DF and Rogério Lemes Garcia from Skyline Stables/ GO. The last interview program had as its agenda the expansion of the Arabian sport horse and was attended by Cristiane de Oliveira, from Haras Spartan/RS and the Director of Functional Races at ABCCA, also President of the National Association of the Functional Arabian Horse (ANCAF ), Brunno Zanotta. In addition to being a breeder, Cristiane is a horsewoman, her daughters compete in various events and her stud farm specifically breeds horses for the sport. Cristiane talks about her beginnings, how she transformed from an “urban to rural” person, highlighting the family atmosphere of the test

venues and everyone’s willingness to show what the Arabian horse is all about. According to her, the relationship with the Arabian horse is a “lasting passion”. Who knows, “Chat with the Breeder” will be able to convince you that he, the breeder, is an ordinary person! Nancy Lustosa Barros Hirsch is an Arabian horse breeder, owner of Haras Namahê (Rio de Janeiro), writer, journalist and architect.
