With 41 races completed, 18 victories, 13 in 120 km races, Rodrigo Storani Saliba was the young rider with the most victories among all those registered with the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) in 2022, which led him to finish first in the FEI Endurance Young Riders World Ranking. It is important to highlight that he completed eight races during the season without any penalty, thus benefiting from valid bonus points in the FEI Endurance Young Riders World Ranking. “Winning fifth place in the 2023 FEI World Endurance Championship for Young Riders and Juniors on September 2nd in Castelsagrat was one of the most important achievements of my career to date, as I won the World Championship Try Out on May 26th in Castelsagrat, with

ways encouraged by his uncle Paulo Jamil Saliba and his parents, who also competed with his children, Rodrigo and Renato Storani Saliba. Saliba ended 2022 as the world record holder in 120 km races with five victories, four of which with animals from Rach Stud and in Brazil. With Marei Rach (Voltaire Rach x Melina Rach by * HS Titian) he finished first in the CEIY2 * 120 km races on March 30th and on September 17th. With Blues Master Rach (Mister Eros HX x Blue Note Rach by *Polonez) he finished first in the CEIYJ2*120 km race on June 18th and with Miranda Rach (Vesper Rach x Melina Rach by *HS Titian) on December 11th 2022. And with Loukario Desverrieres he won the CEIYJ2* 120 km Try Out of the World Cup on May 26, in Castelsagrat; and in this year 2023

Loukario Desverrieres,” declared Saliba. Rodrigo Storani Saliba was born with the DNA of love for the Arabian horse in his blood on October 22, 2002 in São Paulo. The Saliba Family, through his grandfather Jamil Saliba, his father Ricardo Jamil Saliba and his uncle Paulo Jamil Saliba, has been breeding Arabian horses since 1985, when they started breeding at Haras Ilha da Chapada and later changed their name to Rach Stud. Since his birth, Rodrigo was introduced to the world of the Arabian horse, being taken as a baby by his mother Ana Paula and his father Ricardo to exhibitions throughout Brazil. And his eyes lit up when a family animal won a championship and was taken to him. With Rach Stud’s animals standing out in endurance races in Brazil and PanAmerican championships, it didn’t ke long for Rodrigo Storani Saliba to start the sport at the age of eight, al-

he was fifth in the FEI World Endurance Championship for Young Riders and Juniors.. The focus until the end of this year is the Pan American Endurance Championship from November 23-26 in Chile.

Name; age and place of birth. Rodrigo Storani Saliba: I’m 20 years old and was born in São Paulo. When and why did you start riding? RSS: I started participating in endurance races in 2011, when I was eight years old. My family breeds Arabian horses, my uncle and my parents participated in this discipline. So my entry was kind of natural. I started doing controlled speed races together with my parents and my brother Renato. Arabian Horse Intl

How did you come into contact with endurance? RSS: I had contact with endurance racing since I was little, following my parents and uncle’s career on the farm and in competitions. I have endurance as a sport. This force I to also remain physically prepared. In 2019, when I did my first international races, I became more interested. My participation is also closely linked to our family’s breeding. It is a pleasure to be able to ride animals raised at home.

What titles have you won to date? RSS: I have four titles in the Brazilian Championship (2013-Short Distance Young, 2015- Short Distance Mirim, 2016-YR1*, 2017-YR1* and 2023-YR1*); four in the São Paulo State championship (2014- Short Distance Mirim, 2015Short Distance Mirim, 2016-YR1*, 2019-YR2*, ), three first places in the ranking of the Brazilian Equestrian Confederation (CBH) and five Efficiency Trophies (trophy from the São Paulo Equestrian Federation to the best of the year: 2014-Graduado Mirim, 2015-Curta Mirim, 2016YR1*, 2019-YR2*).

What is your greatest Endurance experience? RSS: The race in Fontainebleau, in 2019, was extremely important, as it was my first race outside Brazil, where I gained more experience and got to know a higher level of the sport.

What’s it like to be the best Young Rider in the world in 2022? RSS: Finishing first in the world rankings brings me a lot of joy and happiness, mainly due to

How do you prepare for endurance races? RSS: My preparation is done in the gym with a personal trainer, with training focused on riding and on weekends and holidays riding on the farm. Because I live far from the farm, I can only ride on certain weekends. So while the animals are conditioned by the trainers, I do my part by staying in shape to handle long-distance races. I am even monitored by a doctor specializing in sports. A race that has not yet been competed and an unforgettable race. RSS: I have a dream of competing in a desert race and an unforgettable event was the victory in Castelsagrat, on May 26, 2022, in the Try Out of the 2023 Young Riders World Championship. It was without a doubt the most important event of my life. Which horse has marked your trajectory, to date, in Equestrian endurance? RSS: The horse that marked my career was Wild Bill Rach (Arabian cross), which I started my free speed races with and which, due to his docility and intelligence, enabled me to evolve in endurance racing. 8

the perfect process carried out by the employees, veterinarians and members of the Rach team here in Brazil and by the professionals in France. I have to thank the team of trainers at Rach Stud, our veterinarian Dr. Beto Turato and the horses I rode this year. We spend years qualifying our animals to have a year like this. And also to Dr. Guilherme Santos for all the learning he has provided me abroad Do you have any superstitions when riding? RSS: I never started in any race with the aim of winning. In all cases, we knew that we had to wait for the last stage to know what to do. The animal’s safety always comes first. With the most experienced and prepared animals, the results happened naturally.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to become an endurance rider? RSS: Equestrian endurance is a wonderful sport. But you have to be very patient and control your anxiety at all times, since the race doesn’t just depend on us. There is another being involved, and we need sensitivity to understand what he wants, if he is okay or if he is uncomfortable. I had a lot of frustrations along the way and I know I will have many more to come. But I will also have joy that will erase the bad moments. Besides endurance, what other sport do you like to do? RSS: I like surfing. Idols in the endurance and in life. RSS: My uncle Paulo Jamil Saliba.

The legacy of Paulo Jamil Saliba

Alongside his brother Ricardo Jamil Saliba in charge of Rach Stud, Paulo contributed significantly to the strengthening and improvement of Arabian horse breeding in Brazil, becoming one of the biggest supporters of the race, especially in Racing and Endurance. The Brazilian Arabian horse family suffered an immeasurable loss, of a dear friend and a breeder who greatly contributed to the growth and strengthening of the breed in the country. On Saturday, March 18th, we said goodbye to Paulo Jamil Saliba, who for more than 40 years was at the head of Rach Stud Agropecuária Ltda. alongside his late father, Jamil Saliba, and his brother Ricardo Jamil Saliba. Despite the deep sadness we feel at his early loss, at the age of 55, what remains is the legacy of Paulo Jamil Saliba. His legacy will never be forgotten. Whether as a breeder of Arabian horses, passionate about racing and with in-depth knowledge of morphology and pedigree. Or as an incredible human being, with an undeniable character. It is impossible to remember Paulo without being transported to the company of an extremely pleasant and intelligent person. Despite being discreet, he was extremely funny. He could be ironic without being rude. If in a conversation someone mentioned the name of a horse, Paulo would soon come up and talk about the entire genetic history of the animal to explain it to everyone. He was a true human encyclopedia! In addition to his love for racing, Paulo was passionate about equestrian endurance. He competed in important races in Brazil and passed this passion on to his nephew Rodrigo Storani Saliba, who finished 2022 in first place in the FEI Endurance Young Riders World Ranking. In addition to organizing endurance races together with his brother Ricardo, both in the city of Sorocaba, State of São Paulo, and on Ilha da Chapada and in the cities of Alfenas and Pouso Alegre, in the State of Minas Gerais. In order to pay due tribute to this great breeder of the Arabian Horse, who was unanimous as he was adored by everyone, we gathered some testimonials from friends of Paulo Jamil Saliba to show that his legacy will never be forgotten by the Brazilian Arabian horse family.

14

Arabian Horse Intl

LUCAS QUINTANA, TRAINER AT RACH STUD “Paulo was a very good person with a very big heart. I have worked with the Saliba family for 15 years. He took me to some Arabian Horse exhibitions and that’s when I saw how important he is among breeders.” “I was with Paulo at three Brazilian National Shows and he was a gigantic person in the Arabian horse world, both at national and international level.” “The initiative to take the Arabian sport horse to racing was his. It’s been 10 years of racing at the Jockey Club de São Paulo and thanks to Paulo.” “Known by everyone and loved by everyone, he was unanimous in the midst of so much adversity of opinions.”

ALMIR RIBEIRO, RACING DIRECTOR OF THE ARABIAN HORSE BREEDERS BRAZILIAN ASSOCIATION (ABCCA) “Paulo Jamil Saliba was and will always be the Ambassador of Arabian Horse Racing in Brazil. He worked hard to get the first foreign sponsorships for our races.” “In 2013, Brazil became a member of IFHAR – International Federation of Horse Arabian Racing - and Paulo was our first representative.” “On February 28, 2015, we founded HARC – Heritage Arabian Racing Club – in Abu Dhabi together with representatives from Australia, Egypt, Morocco, Poland, Turkey, the UK, the UAE, the USA, and Russia, initiated by HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan; and we lead this association with representatives from 22 countries.” “Still in 2015, we secured our first sponsors in the UAE through the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival and Shadwell Farms.” “Thanks to this work, today our races are sponsored by HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival and UAE President Cup South America Mondial.” “Mr Jamil Saliba planted this seed. Paulo Saliba helped it to be born and grow, and we now have the mission of continuing this unique work. Rest in Peace Dear Brother!”

CRISTIANE (VICE PRESIDENT OF PROMOTION AT ABCCA), FERNANDA AND ZICO GUARDIA “Paulo Jamil Saliba was a very dear friend to all of us. He was an icon of the Arabian breed and the horse world in general. The Saliba brothers have this legacy of spreading the Arabian horse in all disciplines. And Paulo accomplished this task with a lot of love for the horse.” “For us, in particular, he is a great friend who has passed away. We wish our dear friend Ricardo and family peace, comfort, courage and a lot of strength at this time and may he be sure that we will always be with him.”

GUILHERME FERREIRA SANTOS, VETERINARIAN OF THE BRAZILIAN ENDURANCE TEAM AND BREEDER “I’m going to tell you a little story that for me summarizes the character and human quality of Paulo Jamil Saliba. At a lunch at the São Paulo Jockey Club with Paulo and Ricardo, a mare of mine that was close to giving birth to Mister Eros caused the three of us a lot of curiosity about the result of this long-awaited crossbreeding; and I shared with them my concern about the situation of the mare, which was very heavy and had wobbles (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis), which put the birth and the mare’s life at risk if she lay down without being able to get up.” “A week later, I received a package sent by Paulo at home, and I called him asking what it was about. He told me that he ordered a medicine to be formulated and sent it to me as a gift, not allowing me to pay for it. He told me: ‘Guilherme, it’s a gift from me and I hope it works, because the most important thing is that the mare lives. ’”

Arabian Premiere the first A

From this edition onwards we will tell the story of the return of Arabian horse racing in Brazil in 2013. Dear Friends, Partners and Lovers of Arabian Horse Racing I remember very well that September 30th, 2013 was on Monday and was clouldly and cold night. I was there at São Paulo Jockey Club, where this night passed to the history of Brazilian Arabian Horse Racing as the night of First Arabian Horse Racing in Brazil. Finally the Arabian Horse was officially at São Paulo Jockey Club. This historic first race was the Arabian Premiere over 1,100 meters on dirt for 4-years-old and older at Cidade Jardim Hippodrome. It was only six Arabian horses and more than 30 Brazilian Breeders Arabian Horses, friends and authorities to participate of this historical party. It was really a big party, because all the most important Arabian Pedigress was representated with colts and fillies out of Aristocratic Families as Bey Shah, Padron Psyche, Aladdin, Huclebery Bey, The Desperado, The Alchemist, Polonez, Adventure Alladin. From Egypt to Poland, moving to Russina and United States of America with 5000 years of history finally reached the track of São Paulo Jockey Clyub.

20

Arabian Premiere Prix had 4 Colts and 2 Fillies at

Arabian Horse Intl

dirt and the distance of 1.100 meters was easily covered by All Pol Rach in 1:15:012, leaving behind him two horses that also made a part of the history of our Arabian racing, Thunder Rach and another one named as Atentaddo VE, the biggest winner untill today; 10 years later! Regarding the time and speed of the horses, nothing to say, at that night was a record. A great challenger just start after that racing, that night. Today we reached more tham 300 Arabian horses that was trained at Sao Paulo Jockey Club, more than 200 Races was held there and after 10 years we continue for another more years, but, the success was only possible due to the our Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association, our Breeders and mainly to our sponsors as that for this 10 years are supporting us. Thanks to HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed AL Nahyan Racing Festival, Wathba Stallions Cup, UAE President Cup Series- Mondial Series, Shadwell Farms, Al Shahania Stud, Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and Heritage Arabian Racing Club. We have much more to do in 2024 that is coming, but now we will spend a time, look to these great pictures and remember that Wonderful Night! VG Raj Al Mared maintains supremacy and consolidates as the best horse of the season

VG Raj Al Mared achieved another memorable victory for Haras Bluegrass at Cidade Jardim Racetrack by winning the Grand Prix Wathba Stallions Cup for Colts II, sponsored by HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Horse Racing Festival on July 15. The Grand Prix Wathba Stallions Cup for Colts II (1,600 meters on turf) is the second leg of the Arabian Horse Triple Crown 2023 and had the participation of the best performing and rated Arabian horses in Latin America. Mared Al Sahra 5-year-old son Mared Al Sahra won by six lengths from his half-brother Clapton AJR to cement himself as the best horse of the season by claiming his seventh victory in eight races. VG Raj Al Mared (Mared Al Sahra x Daughter of Just HVP by *FA El Shawan) is trained by Thiago Haidar for Haras Bluegrass and was ridden with great balance and skill by his official part24

ner, Jeane Alves, two-time champion of Jockey Club statistics of São Paulo and the first woman to win the São Paulo Grand Prix, the main race in the state. The duo won the first race contested over a mile on turf and second victory in the Grand Prix Wathba Stallions Cup for Colts II, as they won the first on May 13th with two lengths of advantage over Clapton AJR (Mared Al Sahra x Cowboys Gal by Wiking). José Caio Vaz Guimarães, from Haras Bluegrass, commented: “VG Raj Al Mared is an extremely special horse for our family because he represents the 30 years of breeding at Haras Bluegrass, mainly because he is in the Jockey Club of São Paulo (JCSP) where our story began. My father, José Carlos Vaz Guimarães, passionate about horses, especially Arabians and Thoroughbreds (breeds that he operates professionally), made our life from the JCSP. And

Raj, for being the ace that he is, represents all of our creation.” He continued: “Once again VG Raj Al Mared could not be in better hands. Our thanks to the trainer Thiago Haidar, the veterinarian Henrique Garcia, the jockey Jeane Alves and Erinaldo who takes care of Raj with all the affection in his day to day. All work is thought out and calculated with a single objective and this makes us successful in the races in which VG Raj Al Mared competes. And we couldn’t be happier and more fulfilled with this team. In this race, Jeane Alves did not need to demand more from the horse at any time and won by six lengths ahead, which shows that we are on the right path.” Trainer Thiago Haidar said: “I want to thank Haras Bluegrass for the confidence in training VG Raj Al Mared; and he once more showed his superiority. Congratulations to Jeane Alves for the excellent driving. Raj is not undefeated today because the second race was very close to the first and as he was an animal that was debuting, that competed with animals of several victories and more experienced. He showed an excellent evolution and as the distances increased he showed his full potential. We are very happy with this victory, the seventh of his curriculum and the first of the Triple Crown” “Today was an easy race; we started at the front and held on. I didn’t have to demand anything from him. I’ve ridden the VG Raj Al Mared since his first race and I’ve noticed the longer the distance the more he likes it and comes easier. He’s a crack and I’m in love with

my ‘Branquinho’ (‘Little White’ it’s his affectionate name),” commented Jeane Alves. Clapton AJR, bred and owned by Almir José Ribeiro and trained by Oberdan S. Pereira, was masterfully driven by Antonio Mesquita who fought from the start to reach VG Raj Al Mared crossed in second place. Trained by Lucas Quintana and with six victories in Cidade Jardim, Mahatma Rach (*Sarmata x Magic All Rach by Ulisses Rach) was ridden once more by Jeffecleone Bispo and finished in third place; an honorable position in his farewell race at the Jockey Club of São Paulo. Breeder and owner Ricardo Jamil Saliba, from Rach Stud Agropecuária Ltda. told us: “Mahatma Rach will follow new directions. He has shown in his participation in the races that he has the potential to pursue another sport, equestrian endurance. The great advantage of the Arabian horse is this: continuity in the sport.” Obstinado Rach, RG El Bak and Versado Rach finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. 1 VG RAJ AL MARED (Mared Al Sahra x Daughter of Just HVP by *FA El Shawan). 2 CLAPTON AJR (Mared Al Sahra x Cowboys Gal by Wiking). 3 MAHATMA RACH (*Sarmata x Magic All Rach by Ulisses Rach). 4 OBSTINADO RACH (Atentaddo VE x Obsession Rach by Voltaire Rach). 5 RG EL BAK (RG Karat x *Endora by Wojslaw). 6 VERSADO RACH (Atentaddo VE x Vertente Rach by Vaillant Rach). Normandia Rach ridden by Ruberlei Viana and RG Kalifa ridden by Michael Silva

Normandia Rach takes third consecutive win Normandia Rach (*Uzbek Du Lion x Novella Rach by Voltaire Rach) claimed her third consecutive victory by finishing first in the Grand Prix Wathba Stallions Cup for Fillies II and the first leg of the Arabian Horse Triple Crown 2023 for fillies on July 15. From the start to the final 400 meters, what we saw was a fierce battle for first place between RG Era (RG Karat x RG Kasta by *Sarmata) led by Robson Nunes and RG Kalifa (Cáceres CSM x Caldas CSM by Pavel Rach) under the mount of Michael Silva, both trained by Estanislau Petrochinski, when Normandia Rach under the impeccable command of Ruberlei Viana attacks from the outside and disputes the race with the two fillies. In the final 150 meters, a tight fight between Normandia Rach, on the outside, and RG Kalifa, on the inside, leaving the other competitors behind, with victory for the first with a ¾ length advantage over the second. In this way, Normandia Rach conquers her 26

Arabian Horse Intl

third consecutive victory and second victory of the GP Wathba Stallions Cup for Fillies, since she won the first race on May 13. “We are very happy for Normandia Rach’s victory in a much disputed race with RG Kalifa attacking all the way in an exceptional way. Kalifa is Pavel Rach’s granddaughter; our breeding animal. A very balanced race worthy of a grand prix with Normandia improving with each race and with a bright future”, declared Ricardo Jamil Saliba from Rach Stud Agropecuária Ltda. Naizza Rach (Feitizzo Rach x La Nouba Endurance by *Saad Ibn Syed) who was driven by Idevaldo Silva was third followed by RG Era and Vivina Rach. Trainer Lucas Quintana said: “Normandia Rach has confirmed the expectations we have of her and she improves with each race. Due to having a greater distance than the previous one, the race was much disputed, mainly because both RG Era and RG Kalifa are mares that grow as the distances increase.”

For the jockey Ruberlei Viana “it was an exceptional race with very strong competition. I felt that Normandia Rach was able to fight for the victory in the final meters, because she had a lot of desire to run.” Almir José Ribeiro, racing director of the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association stated: “First I would like to thank the organization of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Horse Racing Festival for the trust in another year of promotion, investment and dedication in promoting the Arabian horse racing in Brazil.” “Our deep and sincere thanks to HH Sh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority for his visionary insight into the future of Arabian horse racing in the world and especially the dedication and affection that Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the Festival, has for Brazil and for the breeders of the Brazilian Arabian horse.” In addition to the awards during the races, all horses participating in the 2023 Racing Calendar also compete in the Arabian Cup 2023 Arabian Cup Race category promoted by the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association. The Grand Prix Wathba Stallions Cup for Fillies II and Colts II were organized by the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association in partner-

ship with the Jockey Club of São Paulo. VG Raj Al Mared takes fourth cons

VG Raj Al Mared once again showed that he is the sensation of the 2023 Arabian racing season in Brazil by winning the Grand Prix Wathba Stallions Cup for Colts I on May 13th, a race that is on the international calendar of HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Horse Racing Festival. Considered one of the most exciting races ever held at Hippodrome of Cidade Jardim, Jockey Club de São Paulo, the race was over 1,300 meters on turf for 3-years-old and older. The Grand Prix Wathba Stallions Cup for Colts I was the most prominent and most anticipated race of the Arabian breed, as it brought together seven animals with a total of 28 victories and was the first time that two champion sons of Mared Al Sahra, Clapton AJR (Mared Al Sahra x Cowboys Gal by Wiking) and VG Raj Al Mared (Mared Al Sahra x Daughter of Just HVP by *FA El Shawan) competed against each other and were the favorites. In a very disputed race until the entry of the home stretch when VG Raj Al Mared under the confident driving of Jeane Alves attacks on the outside and takes the lead, followed by Clapton AJR ridden by Idevaldo Silva. The duo is not intimidated and maintains the 28

Arabian Horse Intl

lead, winning the race by two lengths to claim a fourth consecutive victory. Bred and owned by the Vaz Guimarães family, owner of Haras Bluegrass, VG Raj Al Mared has Thiago Haidar as his trainer and is part of the new generation of Brazilian Arabian racing horses with a promising future and the competence to participate in any major race in the world. José Caio Vaz Guimarães said: “In addition to being a super horse, my father (José Carlos) said that in addition to being beautiful, he is an animal that likes to run, and he proves it in every race he competes in. Raj provides us with unique and unforgettable moments, because in each race he brings together our friends from many years at the Jockey Club of São Paulo who are there just to see him race.” He added: “We are very happy with this important victory, because in the previous one, on April 14th, he broke his own record of 1,500m on turf and today he won his fourth consecutive victory and remains undefeated in races on the grass track. And I can only thank our trainer Thiago Haidar, our lady jockey Jeane Alves, our veterinarian Dr. Henrique Garcia and Jaime from Haras Vendaval, because without

them Raj would not be the champion he is.” Jeane Alves said: “I want to thank the Vaz Guimarães family and trainer Thiago Haidar for the opportunity and confidence in riding VG Raj Al Mared from the very first race.” “The start was well disputed and as I know him well, I knew he was more willing to run and in the final stretch I attacked on the outside and we took the lead. I saw that Clapton AJR was right behind, but my Whitey, as I affectionately call him, didn’t give up and we won this important race which is the GP Wathba Stallions Cup for Colts I.” Clapton AJR which was ridden by Idevaldo Silva and was runner-up is bred and owned by Almir José Ribeiro and his trainer is Oberdan S. She showed that she has evolved a lot and won her first victory in a very important race such as the GP Wathba Stallions Cup for Fillies I.” “Having second place with Naizza and third with Holly Pol is confirmation that our work is on the right path and that we will have more victories in the next races.” For Ricardo Jamil Saliba, owner of Rach Stud Agropecuária Ltda. Normandia Rach’s victory “is the result of more advanced breeding, a generation in which we are using the French line through Dormane who sires *Uzbek Du Lion, plus the fact that Naizza Rach is sister to Novella Rach dam from Normandia.” Jockey Michael Silva commented: “The start was well disputed and I felt that Normandia Rach had a lot of breath and desire to race and I just managed and waited for the right moment to attack. When Naizza took the lead, she perked up and followed with more desire to run and we won by three lengths.” Bred and owned by Cláudio R. G. Ribas and

Clapton AJR wins GP Paulo Jami Triple Crown of the Ar

The fantastic Clapton AJR, under the excellent driving of Idevaldo Silva and training of Oberdan S. Pereira, won with 8 ½ lengths of advantage in a close dispute over the second place, Obstinado Rach, the Grand Prix Paulo Jamil Saliba, first race of the 2023 calendar of UAE President Cup South America Mondial Brazil and first leg of Arabian Horse Triple Crown Classic for Colts 2023. Disputed over 1,400 meters on dirt, the race had the participation of seven champion animals, males and females 3-years-old and older, who competed on May 13 in the GPs Wathba Stallions Cup at Cidade Jardim Racecourse, Jockey Club de São Paulo. GP Paulo Jamil Saliba’s victory was a special achievement for breeder and owner Almir José Ribeiro as it was the first race on a dirt track for Clapton AJR, who demonstrated his talent on both turf and dirt tracks. In addition to being a well-balanced race because he disputed the first place with Obstinado Rach, a horse that responds very well on dirt and with five victories. With this achievement, Clapton AJR adds six races with five wins and a second place under his belt. Normandy Rach, winner of the May 13 Wath34

ba Stallions Cup for Fillies I race, crossed in third place. “I am very happy with the victory of Clapton AJR who showed in this race to be a good horse on the dirt track and beating the favorite Obstinado Rach was exciting. Congratulations to all our team that prepared the horse and left him in conditions to, once again, win this great prize”, said Almir José Ribeiro. Trainer Oberdan S. Pereira said: “It all worked out as he returned in excellent condition from his last race two weeks ago. It was a great achievement because it is his first sand race and Clapton AJR has proved he is a champion horse.” Experienced jockey Idevaldo Silva declared: “Clapton AJR is a confident horse that has shown to be good in the sand as well. From the start I knew that when I needed him he would respond and at the entrance to the straight we approached the first place, we dominated with ease and guaranteed the victory.” The Grand Prix is the first classic of the 2023 Arabian Horse Triple Crown, a fair and deserved tribute to the breeder Paulo Jamil Saliba, ambassador and great person responsible for the return and success of Arabian horse racing in

il Saliba, the first classic of the rabian Horse in Brazil Brazil, who unfortunately left us in March of this year. Paulo Jamil Saliba is the person most responsible for the return and success of Arabian horse racing in Brazil. It was his passion and initiatives to hold races at the Jockey Club of São Paulo and Brazil’s membership of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) in 2014 that made Arabian horse racing possible. Without his love and passion for the Arabian horse, today it would not be possible to organize the races that are part of the international calendar sponsored by HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan- UAE President Cup Series South America Mondial and Wathba Stallions Cup and, mainly, we would not have this new generation of animals with pedigrees from the best stallions and dams in the world. Almir José Ribeiro, racing director of Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA) said: “First I want to thank our sponsors who each year understand the importance and growth of Arabian horse racing in Brazil.” “Secondly, I want to thank the Saliba Family, especially our honoree Paulo Jamil Saliba, the person who worked hardest for the return of Arabian racing and who, if today it is a reality, this is due to his work for more than a decade.” “This was the first Arabian Horse Triple Crown race in Brazil. The next ones will be in July and

November: two big challenges with two more races in the coming months.” The UAE President Cup Series South America Mondial is an initiative of HH Sh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the UAE, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Court and Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority; and HE Faisal Al Rahmani, President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR). and General Director of the UAE President Cup, which has been stimulating and ensuring the sustainability of Arabian racing in Brazil more and more.. Over 1500m, the Prize UAE President Cup Series for Colts I was the Saturday, June 24, highlight on the turf at the Jockey Club de São Paulo (JCSP) and was won in gritty fashion by VG Raj Al Mared with Jeane Alves, his partner since the first race, who emerged victorious in six of the seven races in which he competed. The animals started in a group, but VG Raj Al Mared and Obstinado Rach battled for first place until the entry of the entry to the final stretch being followed by Clapton AJR. Jeane Alves gave the horse a little more breath and VG Raj Al Mared (Mared Al Sahra x Daughter of Just HVP by *FA El Shawan) responded immediately and took the lead with a length over Obstinado Rach; while Clapton AJR (Mared Al Sahra x Cowboys Gal by Wiking) ridden by Idevaldo Silva advances outside and pairs with Alves and Raj. The two sons of Mared Al Sahra have five wins in six races in which they have participated and are fighting an exciting battle for the first place in the UAE President Cup Series Award for Colts I, held on June 24 at Hippodrome of Cidade Jardim, Jockey Club de São Paulo, and organized Arabian Horse Intl

by the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association. Ridden by Jeane Alves since his debut, when he won by 24 ½ lengths and with two records in the 1400 meters on turf and 1500 meters on dirt, VG Raj Al Mared masterfully takes first place in the race with a ½ length advantage over Clapton AJR , who fought bravely to the finish line. Known as an iron fist, Jeane Alves became the first woman to win the São Paulo Grand Prix, the main race in São Paulo and the second main race in Brazil; and the only woman in the racing world to beat the stats twice. After the race she told us: “This victory is very special because first I competed with Obstinado Rach and then I was attacked by Clapton AJR until the end, but as I train and ride VG Raj Al Mared since he arrived at JCSP I knew that he would not let me down and we got another victory.” Coach Thiago Haidar commented: “Another brilliant race with an exciting duel between Clapton AJR and VG Raj Al Mared. And once again Raj won with his half-brother in second.

Haras Bluegrass Team. Text Cidinha Franzão. With the increase in distance, Clapton had an excellent race and the two animals showed that they are the stars of this season. I want to thank all of our team and Dr. Henrique Garcia for the veterinary care.” Bred and owned by José Carlos Vaz Guimarães (Haras Bluegrass), VG Raj Al Mared is part of the new generation of Brazilian Arabian race horses with a promising future and the ability to participate in any major race in the world. “First of all I want to thank our trainer Thiago Haidar and Jeane Alves who accepted our invitation to train and ride Raj since he arrived at the Jockey Club of São Paulo. It was an exciting race until the end and we believed we would win, but we always had a lot of respect for Clapton because we knew he was our great opponent”, declared José Caio Vaz Guimarães from Haras Bluegrass. Seven-year-old gray with six wins, Mahatma Rach (*Sarmata x Magic All Rach by Ulisses Rach), two-time champion of the Wathba Stallions Cup for Colts (2021 and 2022), was third followed by RG El Bak (RG Karat vs *Endora by Wojslaw) with four wins under his belt and Wathba Stallions Cup for Colts champion in May 2022. In fifth place was Obstinado Rach (Atentaddo Rach x Obsession Rach by Voltaire Rach) who has five victories, one of them with Jorge Ricardo, world record holder for race victories; and in sixth place Hallmarck Rach (Bismarck Rach x Havella Rach by Pavel Rach) with two victories also conquered with Jorge Ricardo.

Almir José Ribeiro, Racing Director for the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA) said: “It was the great start of our UAE President Cup South America Mondial Brazil season, and it couldn’t be any different. A race with our best animal’s active in Brazil that has simply topped our statistics for the last three years.” “Our thanks to HH Sh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of the Emirates Racing Authority; and HE Faisal Al Rahmani, President of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) and General Director of the UAE President Cup, which has been stimulating and ensuring the sustainability of Arabian horse racing in Brazil.” The Prize UAE President Cup Series for Colts I was organized by the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association in partnership with the Jockey Club of São Paulo. 1 VG RAJ AL MARED (Mared Al Sahra x Daughter Of Just HVP by *FA El Shawan); 2 CLAPTON AJR (Mared Al Sahra x Cowboys Gal (Wiking); 3 MAHATMA RACH (*Sarmata x Magic All Rach by Ulisses Rach); 4 RG EL BAK (RG Karat x *Endora by Wojslaw); 5 OBSTINADO RACH (Atentaddo VE x Obsession Rach by Voltaire Rach); 6 HALLMARCK RACH (Bismarck Rach x Havella Rach by Pavel Rach)

Normandia is in excellent condition and responded to all my commands and with that we took our second victory in a row.” Lucas Quintana, trainer with the most vic-

tories in Arabian horse races in Brazil since his return in 2013, said: “I have the habit of saying that during training one of the animals whispers to me that it will win the race and this week Normandia whispered to me who would take the second victory. And she performed excellently, once again under the efficient leadership of Michael Silva.” For breeder and owner Ricardo Jamil Saliba, from Rach Stud Agropecuária, who won the first three places consecutively, “it was a fantastic race in which the three fillies repeated the result of the previous race, with a change from second to third place. It’s a trio that is competing together, but Normandia, who is Dormane’s granddaughter, stood out again.” He added: “We are very happy because they are three animals conceived for the sport and, mainly because of Vivina’s result, which has improved a lot in her performance in the last races and we are sure that the three will bring us much joy and achievements.” Almir José Ribeiro, Racing Director for the Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association (ABCCA) said: “It was the great start of our UAE President Cup South America Mondial Brazil season, and it couldn’t be any different. Al Doha gains Gr1 PA in the UAE President Cup at Doncaster

France may have a new flying filly as the fouryear-old Al Doha gained her first Group 1PA win in the UAE President Cup – UK Arabian Derby at Doncaster on August 19. Winning by just a neck from her stable mate, Al Shaqab’s Ghadah, it gave her owner HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani, her trainer Thomas Fourcy and jockey Olivier Peslier as second consecutive win in the £80,000 mile and a quarter race, which they won with Abbes in 2021. Speaking after the race, Fourcy was delighted with his filly, “Al Doha has been in very good form, she’s very easy to ride and has shown great ability on the racetrack before when finishing second to Al Ghadeer (in the French Arabian Derby), and she deserved to win her own Group 1PA today. She will go to the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments on Arc weekend.” Peslier commented, “When Al Doha finished second at Chantilly it was a great run, the winner was very strong, but my filly is very good. First time out she did well when not fully fit and then won very well next time. The Derby in France is very hard against the colts; she 48

fought very well, so I came here to ride her today knowing she had a good chance. She has progressed well and is still improving.” HE Faisal Al Rahmani, Event Manager for the UAE President Cup who was on course to welcome the winners and present the trophies commented, “We are delighted for the winners of the race today. I’m very pleased with the way the series is going in its thirtieth year, we started with just six races and now there are 15 around the world, we hope maybe next year we will increase that number too.” Genny Haynes, ARO Chief Executive Officer said, “We warmly congratulate Al Doha and her connections on winning today. It is also notable that the first three homes were all fillies, which is a first for this race. We thank the UAE President Cup series for the support of our most valuable race for four-year-olds and we thank the team at Doncaster for their assistance with our overseas runners.” Source and photo: Debbie Burt

Al Ghadeer is the winner of the Qatar International Stakes The richest Arabian race on the British racing calendar, the Gr.1 (PA) Qatar International Stakes (Goodwood Festival) worth £400,000 in prizemoney produced yet another thrilling finish and went the way of Al Ghadeer in the colours of Al Shaqab Racing. As was announced by his trainer Francois Rohaut following his Gr.1 (PA) success on Prix De Diane day at Chantilly, the Al Shaqab Racing-owned four-year-old Arabian Al Ghadeer not only turned up on Day 2 of the Qatar Goodwood Festival, but also dominated the proceedings to land the Gr.1 (PA) Qatar International Stakes. Partnered by Christophe Soumillon in a select field of eight, of which three quarters were French trained, Al Ghadeer vied for favouritism with his stablemate Moshrif (Dahess) before the off, of the 1600m Gr.1 (PA) contest. The only four-year-old in the field and already seeking a fourth success at the highest level, Al Ghadeer travelled strongly in mid-peloton, in a race taken along by Moshrif. Showing his class on the decent towards home, Soumillon allowed the colt to take closer order and the pair duly put the race to bed

in a matter of strides. Al Ghadeer cruised into the lead, passing stablemate Moshrif and passing the post with three and a half lengths to spare over the game, but never-nearer First Classs (Dahess), who finished second for owner Noora Racing, trainer Jean de Mieulle and jockey Ronan Thomas. The HE Sheikha Reem Bint Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani-owned Samlla (Assy) ran his usual courageous race and like in the 2022 edition, seized the third place, for the winning trainer Francois Rohaut, late on as he was a further half length behind under jockey Maxime Guyon. Bred by Mohammad Al-Najafi, Al Ghadeer was the leading French three-year-old colt (PA) in 2022 and landed both the Gr.1 (PA) Al Rayyan Cup at Deauville and the Gr.1 (PA) Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains at Saint-Cloud. Hayyan wins Dubai Kahay

$1,000,000 Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic sponsored by EMAAR. Winning time: 02:14:15 (race record 02:11.87) A thrilling head-bobbing finish greeted spectators to the 2023 Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan with local hopes Hayyan and Barakka involved in a long stretch duel in the Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic (2000m) before the Majed Al Jahoori trainee Hayyan (Munjiz x Dahwa by Tidjani) prevailed by a short head. Ridden by Panamanian jockey Oscar Chavez, who also partnered him when winning the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 last month, he was positioned in a handy fourth on the rail just behind a fast pace. Turning for home, Barakka (AF Al Buraq x Laqataat by Bengali D’Albret) travelled best with Hayyan under persuasion looking for daylight but once that came he quickly went past the Ahmad bin Harmash representative. 50

He won Round 2 and we were hopeful that he would come and win again today. He did well and won a very exciting race.” Oscar Chavez, winning jockey, said: “The moment the trainer legged me up, I knew that he was way better than his last run. I knew that he would jump and put himself into a good spot without forcing him too much. “He slowed down a little bit but he saw the other horse and he committed again. It is a great way to cap the season and I have to say thanks to all of the owners and the trainers for the support.” Source: Emirates Racing Authority. Photo: Dubai World Cup

yla Classic in thrilling race

Tilal Al Khalediah cruises to victory in the Obaiya Arabian Classic Al Khalediah Stables’ Tilal Al Khalediah (Laith Al Khalediah x Aaseyat Al Khalediah by Khalid El Biwaibiya) won the top Purebred Arabian race at the fourth edition of the Saudi Cup meeting, the Group 1, $2 million Obaiya Arabian Classic in dominant style, making amends for a nose loss in 2022 behind Hadi de Carrere (FR). Ridden once again by Adel Alfouraidi, from post 10, the leading local contender did not disappoint his faithful, being ridden patiently from mid-pack to deliberately pick up his rivals, one by one, entering contention for the lead at the top of the King Abdulaziz Racecourse home stretch. Turning for home, he dismissed a game pace-setting RB Rich Lyke Me (USA) and Alberto Sanna, distancing himself from that rival and the remainder of the field in route to a six-anda-half-length victory. Jockey Adel Alfouraidi commented: “I’m delighted with the performance. I knew he stayed well but it was a challenge from an outside gate. I wanted to hold onto the horse for as long as possible but he was going so well that I had to let him go.” RB Rich Lyke Me, drawn in the outermost 12, held on admirably after dueling the first 1600m and ultimately dispatching the winner’s Saad Mutlaq-trained stablemate, Qaswarat Al Khalediah (KSA). Trained by Fawzi Nass, the runner-up held off another stablemate of the winner, Hamdani Khaled Al Khalediah (KSA) to third by one length. A fourth member of the 52

Upstart Crow Wins again in the Wathba Stallions Cup at Chepstow

Upstart Crow and Miss Teagan Padgett continued their unbeaten run this year, winning by a head in the Wathba Stallions (0-75) Handicap at Chepstow over a mile this on July 28. Securing their fourth victory in as many starts, the six-year-old kept stablemates Jaahez, ridden by Miss Rhea Betts at bay, with Mayfair and Rhiain Ingram a further two and three-quarters of a length away in third. This gave trainer James Owen a second one-two-three training performance of the current ARO season. Owner, Mrs Linda Reeves, whose daughter Lissie looks after Upstart Crow at Owen’s yard in Newmarket was delighted saying, “This was supposed to be a bit of fun for him before we took him to endurance, a fourth win is beyond our wildest dreams. It also really helps that Lissie is looking after him and Teagan rides him every time, he needs that consistency.” Padgett, who hasn’t ridden any other Arabian in a race apart from Upstart Crow, was also

surprised at the gelding’s performance, “He came out of the stalls really well and we ended up in front, but he got home and did exactly what he needed to do. I thought today would be hard for him, but he’s dug deep and battled his way to the line.” Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Racing Festival commented, “The Festival sponsors 153 races globally this year, as well as the World Arabian Horse Racing Forum and the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown which is held in Abu Dhabi in December. The Festival is delighted to support the Arabian Racing Organisation through the sponsorship of these races in the UK and we congratulate Teagan on another great ride on Upstart Crow this evening.” Source: Arabian Racing Organisation. In addition we have added to our Purebred Arabian programme with almost double the amount of races on offer. Every race night will now feature 10 Thoroughbred races and two Purebred Arabian contests, underlining our continued commitment to developing this code of racing both in Saudi Arabia and beyond. “We expect to announce further updates to the 23-24 programme in the coming weeks and look forward to a successful and exciting Riyadh season.” Source: Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia Media Office

On August 11-14th, 2023, one of the most awaited events for lovers of the most beautiful horses took place, i.e. the world-famous Pride of Poland Sale and the Polish National Arabian Horse Show. As many as 117 horses were entered in this year’s National Show. The stud farm in Janów Podlaski can be safely called the capital of pure Arabian horses in Poland. It is a historic place and close to the heart of every person who has anything to do with this wonderful breed of horses. This year’s Janów was different than usual, there was no outdoor show or the green arena that most of us associate it with. The whole event was organized under a roof to probably prevent possible bad weather, for which the organizers were not prepared a year ago. The indoor riding arena in Janów has turned into an exclusive, very elegant and very modern place. The interior was on par with high-ranking foreign shows, and the navy blue arrangement with white tables looked chic and exquisite,

the huge LED screens were phenomenal, and the entire arena was very well lit. This year, horses were sold for the amount of EUR 2,151,000 (46 horses on offer, 31 sold), of which two Michałów mares received the highest amounts: the beautiful El Esmera (Sahm El Arab x Esmeraldia by QR Marc) was sold to Al Zobair Stud (UAE) for 810,000 Euro, and Wildona (Shanghai E.A. x Wilda by Gazal Al Shaqab) went out in the world with a hammer price of 650 thousand Euro to Switzerland (Hanaya Stud). On Monday, a second auction was held under the name Summer Sale. The highest prices were obtained by two Ekstern daughters from Michałów: Apolonia out of Argolida by Grafik fetched 75,000 thousand Euros, and for Editoria, daughter of Editha by Eden C – 35 thousand Euros. 76

Arabian Horse Intl

The World Arabian Horse Championships 2023 and 2025 will be held in Qatar, for the first time outside France in over 40 years. The Cultural Village Foundation, Katara, will host the 2023 and 2025 editions of the World Arabian Horse Championships (WAHC). It will also be the first time in 40 years that WAHC will be will be organized outside France, and will be hosted at Katara. A strategic partnership agreement towards the event was signed by HE Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager, Cultural Village Foundation - Katara, and Jean-Luc Poulain, President, Centre National des Expositions et Concours Agricoles S. A. (CENECA) during the Katara International Arabian Horse Festival (KIAHF 2022). In this context, HE Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti stressed that this agreement consolidates Qatar’s position globally in the field of equestrianism and interest in purebred Arabian horses. It also confirms the high reputation enjoyed by KIAHF, the on-going second edition of which was extended in duration to close to two weeks due to the strong participations from Qatar and overseas. Very high standards have been adopted at KIAHF making it one of the international events par excellence, as the KIAHF Title Show Championship is considered the first in the world given the size of its global participation and the value of prizes and awards. He added that the World Arabian Horse Championship receives high-quality Qatari participation annually through the best horse-owners and breeders in Qatar. This confirms the ability to compete globally. It also witnessed the coronation of Qatari horses more than once.

Prof. Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager of Katara, told The Peninsula that Qatar, particularly the Cultural Village Foundation - Katara, is set to host the championships. The competition is without a doubt the most prestigious event in the world for the most exquisite Arabian purebred horses. The annual December event brings together more than 100 horses from over 25 countries, where about 2,000 attendees from passionate owners, accomplished breeders come together. The development also proves as a “conclusive evidence that we are working on more than one level at the same time, in a manner befitting the efforts made by the State of Qatar to be a beacon in the region, the Middle East and the world,” Prof. Dr. Al Sulaiti said. The 2023 edition will be hosted by Katara from December 6 to 9; the 2024 edition will be from December 13 to 14, at Paris Porte De Versailles; 2025 edition, back at Katara again, from December 10 to 13; and 2026 edition, at Paris Porte De Versailles, from December 11 to 15. CENACA has highlighted the beauty of Arabian Horses as the “Prince of the Desert.” “The Arabian Horse belongs to all the peoples of the world. Throughout the ages and thanks to humanity’s dedication, the Arabian horse has become a mystical legend, a victorious warrior, an epic steed and an elite progenitor.” “Today, the breeding of purebred Arabians is an art carefully preserved by a whole sector of professionals: owners, breeders, trainers and artisans,” said Prof. Dr. Al Sulaiti. It was a great day all-around for Bahrain at the 18th FEI Endurance World Championship 2022 held in Butheeb (UAE) on Saturday, February 25 2023, as HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa claimed the world champion title and his horse Darco La Majorie won the race’s Best Condition award. “We’re number one!” he shouted upon learning of his victory and becoming Senior World Champion for the first time in his storied career. HH Sheikh Nasser has aimed for a senior title since 2004, starting in 19 championships and completing 14 of them. This time he finally did it, with 10-year-old Darco La Majorie (*Baltik Des Ors x Quatuba La Majorie by *Zadie Despiens), also recent winner of a 160-km race in Sakhir. He won his first gold at the FEI Endurance World Championship for Young Horses in Bablona (HUN) in August 2012. He indicated that the world championship always witnesses the participation of elite riders from different countries of the world and that the competition for the first positions was stiff. Sheikh Nasser pointed out: “The race exhibited different obstacles, but we managed to keep our lead after the 2nd stage. The contest was strong with riders from the UAE, Britain, Spain, and Uruguay. This confirms that it was an open Championship,” The individual podium was completed with reigning Champion, UAE’s Salem Hamad Saeed Al Kitbi riding Bullio Blue Sue “Haleh” (Kevisan Park Kentucky Blue x Saracen Sukalata by Iraki Iskander) silver medal position, and another former champion, 2016 individual winner Jaume Punti Dachs from Spain with horse Echo Falls (Tango D’Ayres x Song of Wind by Zes Zorba) in third place. HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa dominated the stages of the race from the start, relying on the technical plan that His Highness developed and succeeded in implementing thanks to his skills and rich experience. He first place after finishing the race with a time of 7 hours, 36 minutes and 39 seconds, ahead of UAE rider Salem Al Ketbi and Spain’s Jaume Punti Dachs.. As for the team podium, France claimed first place (Gold medal) with Portugal taking second (Silver medal) and Italy in third (Bronze medal). Held at the world-renowned Butheeb International Endurance Village (BIEV) in the United Arab Emirates, the Championship attracted 36 nations with close to 126 combinations. The 160 km track, which was run over six loops, is set against a stunning backdrop, and was prepared to the highest standards with world-class permanent infrastructures and facilities at the Butheeb International Endurance Village. Proper hydration and temperature control were optimised with multiple water points throughout the ride for the competitors to rehydrate. All eyes were on the previous reigning champion, Salem Hamad Saeed Malhoof Al Kitbi from host nation UAE, with the horse Haleh, who came in second at Butheeb but had won gold at the last iteration of the FEI Endurance World Arabian Horse Intl

Championship, held in Pisa (ITA) in 2021. “Haleh is a good horse, today was a very hard race (…). We are happy with the results,” Al Kitbi said. In third place was Jaume Punti Dachs of Spain, with the horse Echo Falls, making this his fifth medal in Endurance World Championships. He is tied with Becky Hart (USA) and HH Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (UAE) for the athletes with the most medals in Endurance World Championships. Reflecting the overall diversity of this year’s championship, the top ten athletes at the individual podium represented eight separate countries: Bahrain (two spots), UAE, Spain (two spots), Australia, Portugal, Lithuania, Oman and Kuwait. Taking the start were 117 combinations, with 36 nations represented, 23 teams, and 13 nations with individual riders, and a remarkably gender balanced field of participants with 60 female and 57 male athletes competing in Butheeb. Team France, which came in first, is moving up the ranks after being bronze medallists at the World Championship in Pisa (ITA) in 2021. Their 13th team medal, Team France holds the record for the most team medals in the history of the championship. With a total of 24 medals claimed at FEI Endurance World Championships, France is also the nation with the most medals overall. The last double gold at an FEI Endurance World Championship – for both team and individual podiums – was claimed by Spain and third-place winner Jaume Punti Dachs of Spain in Samorin (SVK) in 2016. The full roster of countries that participated in the 18th FEI Endurance World Championship is: Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Croatia, Ecuador, Estonia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, and Uruguay. It is an intensely demanding sport where many accomplished riders and horses struggle to cross the finish line. It requires rigorous training, a cool demeanour and the steely determination to keep going even when every muscle in your body wants to give up. Such is the ferocity of endurance horse racing. “Becoming a world champion demands a significant commitment to training, preparation, and continuous development. It requires a combination of natural talent, hard work, dedication, and a deep understanding of the horse’s needs and abilities. The journey is long and challenging, but with hard work, dedication, and perseverance, it is possible to achieve this goal. When I compete, I always strive to set a new personal best”, declared HH Sheikh. Source: FEI/HHSN Media/Cidinha Franzao

The Padise Equestrian Centre (PEC), located near Estonia’s Baltic Sea coast and an hour’s drive from the capital of Tallinn, has successfully hosted the inaugural FEI Endurance World Championship for Young Horses in Northern Europe, showcasing the PEC’s world-renowned infrastructure and commitment to responsible horsemanship. Taking to the podium were Dominika Malikova Kleinova (SVK), clinching Gold with her mare, Molta. Buti Ali Saif Ali Al Nuaimi (UAE), taking Silver riding his gelding SW Iskulm, and Gil Berenguer Carrera (ESP), taking Bronze on his stallion, Fatal. After her win Dominika said: “The event was simply amazing. We were hoping for a good result, but the win was a dream. I’m so happy for my horse. We’ve been getting ready for this race for a year and she deserves it. “The place was wonderful and the facilities were great, especially regarding the welfare of the horses. The track was really beautiful, but very technical and difficult. I’m so thankful for the support we received all day at the main venue and out at the main track from the local people – it gave us so much energy.” The opening ceremony featured representa-

As part of the ceremony, NF representatives and officials planted 30 cherry blossom trees on the venue grounds, symbolising the event’s commitment to environmental awareness, which was followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a gala dinner to officially open the championship. The championship’s natural and technical track, winding through a forest landscape, provided a challenging course totalling 120KM over 4 loops that emphasised both rider skills and stamina for the 8 year-old horses competing. 1 Dominika Malikova Kleinova (SVK) on Molta. 32nd Brazilian Endurance Championship 2023 The 32nd edition of the Brazilian Equestrian Endurance Championship (CBEE) was held at Haras Albar, located in Campinas (SP), from July 21st to 23rd; and once again enchanted all participants for the organization and high level of the endurance riders. José Caio Vaz Guimarães won for the first time the title in the main category, CEI3* 160 km. Riding the 9-y-o chestnut Stud Brasil Itajara (Darike x SN Perestroica by *Farad) he completed the course in 09h14min24s and average speed of 17.32 km/h and also won the Best Condition. In the CEI2* Senior 120 km category, the winner was Pedro Stefani Marino with the 13-yearold gray *Azhar Du Barthas (Khadar x Djouzula by Zulus). The duo completed the 120 km in 05h56min41s with an average speed of 20.19 km/h and also won the Best Condition. Thiago de Freitas Martins with Sabino BV (*Azhar Du Barthas x Anata by *Pepi) was runner-up with a race time of 06h02min31s and average speed of 19.86 km/h. The rider from Brasília, Diogo de Oliveira Martins, won the third championship in the CEIYJ2* 120 km race, riding the 10-year-old mare Zoey Kong Rach (Hong Kong x Zoe Rach by Mister Eros HX). In 2022 he was champion with CP Latifa (Qubilaikhan De Crouz x Eternity da Barra by Ebandor do Top) and in 2021 riding Verve Rach (Voltaire Rach x Vaneska Rach by Mister Eros HX). In the CEI1* 100 km Senior race, the rider from Haras Albar Ederson Fernandes da Costa, known as Branco, riding the seven-year-old gelding Pasha Partout SBV (*El Pasha D’Ayres x Nefertiti SBV by Dazhat LB) won the champion title in 04h44min34s with an average speed of 21.08 km/h. The runner-up was Minas Gerais rider Tiago Manetta Bicalho de Lana with Fenix Djok Trio. In the Young Rider category, Rodrigo Storani Saliba with the nine-year-old mare Miranda Rach 88

(Vesper Rach x Melina Rach by *HS Titan) won the championship with a time of 05h11min18s and an average speed of 19.27 km/h. This same duo was runner-up in 2022 in the CEIYJ2* 120 km race. The runner-up was João Vitor Bagarolli Rodrigues with NNL Perversa. Two riders from Brasília dominated the CEN 1* 80 km Senior ride, with Mariana Damazio Rajão and Zendaya Rach (*HS Tititan x Zoe Rach by Mister Eros HX) and Amarildo Figueiredo de Oliveira riding Artik HNP (Sommant HNP x RSC Andorra by RSC El Deb Haran), Brazilian champion and runner-up respectively. Felizardo da Costa Brandão with Canãa won the championship in the CEN Senior 60 km race and Juliano Wagner Carlos with Helanca Rach runner-up. In the Young category the title went to Lucas Berdouche Machado riding Quinteto Armorial and in the Junior category Bernardo Machado Ulsenheimer with RG Kisil. “We are very happy with the repercussion of the event and with the satisfaction of the participants. This year, the entire race was held at São Vicente Farm and the trails received many compliments from most of the participants”, declared Mariucha Quintieri, director of the event and manager and veterinarian at Haras Albar. Ricardo Saliba, Vice President of Races at Arabian Horse Breeders Brazilian Association, also highlighted the excellent level of competitiveness of the 32nd CBEE, which challenged competitors on difficult tracks. “The level of the competition was excellent. The competitions in the 100, 120 and 160 km categories were of a high level. I have to emphasize again the excellent organization of Haras Albar, because they organized an international level race once again. For this reason, during the event we paid tribute to Carlito, owner of Haras Albar, for his generosity and for the promotion work he does for endurance in Brazil.”

José Caio Vaz Gimarães and Stud Brasil Itajara 160 km Champions and Best Condition

“Since I was a little boy, I watched the long-distance races and found it impressive that horses and riders competed in a 160 km race at a high level. I kept imagining what it would feel like to win a Brazilian 160 km champi-onship. This year I experienced that feeling and I can say that the tiredness, after 12 hours of racing, went away when I saw the arrival and the vet-check packed with the endurance community waiting for me and Stud Brasil Itajara.” “Itajara made the entire race easier, his gallop inherited from his pure-bred Arab racing father (Darike) contributed to making the long roads easier; the strength and courage inherited from his mother (SN Perestroica) meant that the climbs and the heat did not interfere with his performance over the six loops. Thank you very much Stud Brasil Itajara!” “I must say that winning the Brazilian Championship160 km and Best Con-dition is the result of very serious work by a team that, day after day, dedi-cates itself to the horses and to training. It would be difficult to name eve-ryone who contributed to this result, but Daniel, Valmir, Dr Henrique Garcia and my parents, this result would never be possible. Thank you very much!”

Pedro Stefani Marino and *Azhar Du Barthas 120 km Senior Champions and BC

“I analyze the race like mathematics: I calculate how many percentages of the race I am in, what percentage of the stage I am in. And always feeling the performance of the horse, like its breathing, when I can demand a little more or less. “In the first two stages I stayed in the first group and managed the race always watching Thiago Martins, my teammate who rode Sabino BV, son of *Azhar Du Barthas and Brazilian champion CEIYJ2* 120 km in 2022 and runner-up in this race ; and Antonio Marcelino, from Haras Albar.” “*Azhar Du Barthas is the son of Khadar, one of the most important sons of Persik, and Djouzula a very important mare who produced a champion over 160 km, but most of it was destined for racing. Regarding the Best Condition, it is a very important award because the health of the horse is in the first place for me, because if the animal is not well I am the first to withdraw from the race.” “Our focus now is on the Pan American Endurance Equestrian Champion-ship in November in Chile and trying together with the other members of the Brazilian team to win another medal; and maybe an individual medal.”

Diogo de Oliveira Martins and Zoe Kong Rach 120 km Young Riders Champions and BC

“Endurance is a tough sport. It demands dedication, training, effort, union between horse and rider. Even when everything is done down to the smallest detail, eliminations and unforeseen events still happen. Therefore, winning the title of Brazilian champion means a lot to me. Since I started in endurance, I’ve had this as one of my goals, even frustrating myself in several attempts”, said Diogo. “The emotion of being champion was, once again, fantastic. Even more important for being alongside the entire Rach Stud team, friends who have supported and encouraged me for years and who trained Zoey for this race.” “The day of the competition was very hot, on a very technical track, so I set a pace that I knew Zoey would be able to maintain throughout the race. And so it was! The mare proved to be extremely resilient in pace and recov-eries until the finish line. We finished the task together and became Brazilian Champions and won the Best Condition.”

Ederson Fernandes da Costa and Pasha Partout SBV 100 km Senior Champions and BC

92

“It was an achievement for me, for the team and especially for Pasha Par-tout SBV. He is a 1.45m horse that no one believed in his potential, but the team at Haras Albar believed and he was trained to perform well in the Bra-zilian Championship. “After finishing the first stage in first place, I was penalized in eight minutes and started sixth for the second and the team was disappointed, but I believed in him and in the chance of becoming Brazilian champions and I knew of the potential of Partout, because we won a 100 km race in Minas Gerais on June 3rd.” “In the third stage I took the lead and realized that I was pulling the other horses, so I used the following strategy: I slowed down and let the group overtake me. It was then that I noticed that the other horses were tired and the Partout was fine. I completed the third stage at a trail speed of 24.02 km/h.” “I left for the last stage in first place and winning the 100 km champion title had a special flavor, because the horse is a crack and I knew his potential. And this conquest was a turning point because it ended the prejudice that an animal measuring 1.45m cannot be champion. See the example of Nobby who was twice world champion.”

Rodrigo Storani Saliba and Miranda Rach 100 km Young Riders Champions and BC

“It was an excellent race. Miranda Rach once again had a great and even surprising performance, as she was coming from an accident she suffered in Bragança Paulista before the race.” “With her, I was Brazilian Vice-Champion of 120 km twice. In the last loop I had to force her a little more and she responded very well, without scares.” “It was a highly technical race, the temperature cooperated, I dominated from the first stage and we did the fastest last stage of the race.” “I want to thank all the support from my team, my family and dedicate this achievement to my uncle Paulo Jamil Saliba who, due to his great love for Arabian horses and sports, is responsible for the whole family participating in endurance competitions. And my focus right now is on the World Endurance Championships for Young Riders in Castelsagrat, France, where I hope to finish in the Top 10.”

Mariana Damazio Rajão and Zendaya Rach 80 km Senior Champions

“I was invited by Rach Stud to ride Zendaya Rach for her first 80km ride because they had trained her for this distance. She is a young mare and it was our first race together and I followed their instructions always respecting her limits and trying to make a race as fast as I could.” “This year’s trail was excellent. Flatter than the other races I’ve participated in before. Due to the topography of the region, there were quite a lot of hills, as well as flatter areas where you could gallop more and the horses run with more will.” “At the end of the first and second stages she had an excellent recovery and I dropped to the second and third loops in first place. I managed the race and didn’t speed up the pace, because I knew it wasn’t the time and as she is a very young mare and had more experienced horses, I wanted to spare her.” “I continued at a pace that was most comfortable for her and she responded very well. I managed to do a race faster than we expected, but always respecting Zendaya and we won the title of Brazilian champion 80 km. And with our victory, along with that of other riders, we also won the title of Brazilian champion team for Brasilia.”

Rashed Salem Malhoof Al Ketbi repaid M7 Stables’ faith in his abilities by winning the prestigious HH President of the United Arab Emirates Endurance Cup on February 19. Partnering Biniou El Quibi, a 12yo gelding, Al Ketbi won the 160km ride held in the sands of Emirates International Endurance Village in Al Wathba with a time of six hours six minutes and 44 seconds (6:06:44) by ensuring his mount was passed fit at the end of the competition with all his vitals within set parameters despite maintaining an average speed of 26.18kph. The grueling ride began in absolutely frigid conditions with the lead changing hands four times during the course of the six loops, with Al Ketbi, backed by his solid Dubai based team timing his ride to perfection as he finished 42 seconds quicker than Syrian lady rider Masa Adnan Tonbakji, who posted a time of 6:07:26 aboard Al Wathba Stables owned Tonki Dee Boo Mia. Saeed Abdulla Al Mheiri, riding Al Reef Stables-owned Casino Roulette placed third, was almost two minutes further adrift with 6:09:22 on the clock. Abdulla Yousef Al Hammadi and Al Maghaweer Stables’ Ayelen were quickest over the first loop spanning 40km, but lost momentum and ceded the initiative during the second loop over 28km to Al Reef Ajban Stables’ Abdulla Mohammed Al Hammadi on Stirlings Safari. The pair dominated over the third loop that was also run over a 28km course and held on to the summit, but lost their top spot during the course of the fourth loop spanning 24km. At the end of the fourth loop emerged a new leader in Omar Mohammed Al Neyadi who represented Al Wathba Stables and sat aboard Excalibur Hipolyte. Al Neyadi and his partner started their day in second and were third over the second and third phases. They moved to the top and seemed to like it there as they held sway during the fifth and were hopeful of cashing in big time as they entered the final 20km loop looking strong. But the final sprint loops are generally the trickiest and with riders that have plenty of horse under them in a good position to throw the kitchen sink at their rivals, the dynamics start to undergo a paradigm shift which is exactly what Al Neyadi and Excalibur Hipolyte fell foul to as Al Ketbi and Biniou El Quibi, trained by Abdullah Ahmad Al Subousi, started to apply pressure. The pair started the ride placed 27th but moved up two spots before holding on to 20th on the leaderboard over the third and fourth loops and made their bid for glory having climbed up to tenth during the fifth loop. They were 1:7 behind the lead, but a calculated upping of pace allowed them to win with enough at the end as second placed Tonbakji and her mount finished 42 behind and Al Mheiri rounded off the podium.

Breeders’ Cup in Brazil The Brazilian Arabian Horse Breeders’ Cup (Breeders’ Cup) already has a date and place to take place and it is worth noting it in your diary, according to the exhibition calendar of the Brazilian Arabian Horse Breeders’ Association (ABCCA): from 4 to 12 November 2023, in what has already established itself as the ideal space for the presentation, the Centro Hípico de Tatuí/SP. The judging takes place in conjunction with the International Arabian Horse Show. And what sets Breeders’ apart from other conformation competitions? A “lots of train” as our brothers from Minas Gerais would say. The items evaluated by the judges are the Arabian type, that is, the entire animal must show without a shadow of a doubt that it is of the Arabian breed. Likewise, the head design has very specific requirements, with the concave profile. The neck should be arched. The body, legs and posture follow the rules of a healthy horse. The movement and presence are very peculiar to the breed, with the lengthened trots and the haughty attitude. Only colts and fillies are judged, in age groups distributed in ten categories from six to 36 months of age. The panel of judges consists of five, including Brazilians and foreigners. The scoring system goes from 0 to 20, with only three of each judge’s scores being considered: the highest and lowest are discarded. Animals from the same category enter together, pulled by the halter by their presenters, for two laps around the track and then go out to the paddock, as they will be judged individually. There is a limit to the number of animals that a breeder can present at the Breeders’ Cup, but I won’t explain it now, so as not to cause confusion: it’s better to go there and watch, so you can understand better.

As soon as the judges deliver their summaries and the computer technicians transform them into data, the results are read and announced by the portentous voice of the announcer and the entire audience begins to do the math on that animal. There is a big debate about whether the first animals receive lower scores than the following ones... But there’s no point in crying, the order in which the categories are presented is chosen by draw. The breeder who collects the most points from his animals wins. The Breeders’ trophy is special: it is transitory, the winner of one year hands it over to the champion of the following year. The breeder or the owner who wins the cup three times in a row or five times alternately has the right to keep it permanently. The 10 best products (Top Ten) are highlighted and the highest scoring of all is the Premium Cup, which receives a definitive trophy. Created in 1996, the Breeders’ Cup has already had two definitive editions: for Haras Vanguarda, in Monte Mor/SP and for Haras Santo Antônio da Bela Vista, in Itapetininga/SP. The latter, in fact, is the one who, through its holders Carlos and Rodrigo Forte, will hand over the new cup to the 2023 champion, the winner of last year. If we are to exercise our Sherlock Holmes side, in an investigation among the Premium Cup since 2010, several of them have achieved the title of Gold Champions in the Brazilian National shows: the beautiful FT Havanna El Keav, RFI Sophie Almaktub, Margiela HBV, Lady Dominica JSZ and the beautiful TS Khidam El Shawan, Dominus ARABCO and Polarhis HVP. So, if you like betting, show up at 8:00 am at the Tatuí Equestrian Center, take your pen, do your math and, who knows, you’ll be able to guess who will be champion at the next Brazilian National.

Legends of the Arabian Horse

There are many legends about the Purebred Arabian breed, considered by countless historians to be the oldest in the world. Its oldest reports date back to 1600 BC, that is, more than 3,500 years ago, in frescoes from Ancient Egypt. They say that a Bedouin lived in the desert, alone, and asked Allah for a companion to share his life in the desert: with cold nights and long days. Allah understood this lonely man’s desire and decided to give life to a being, a symbol of creation. He ordered that eyes as powerful as those of an eagle, a sense of smell as sensitive as a wolf, the speed of a panther and the resistance of a camel be imprinted on a single creature. He also added the courage of the lion, the privileged memory of the falcon, the elegance 100

of the gait of the horse and the fidelity of the dog. Allah called the South Wind and ordered him to blow on a handful of sand that was in his hands. Then the Arabian Horse appeared so that Allah would always be praised. Another legend says that Muhammad, after a long walk, ordered the animals that had been confined for several days to be released to drink water. Then he called them back and only five mares responded to him. Then, Muhammad blessed these mares and from them descend the five famous bloodlines that make up the breed’s breeding grounds. Also known as the Purebred Arabian, the Arabian horse is the oldest breed of horse in existence. Furthermore, they are also appreciated

for their intelligence and unique physical characteristics. An incomparable beauty, an incredible history and a unique ability to bond with his owners. If you still don’t know much about this breed or want to know more about it, you’re in the right place. But a warning: you will fall in love with the Purebred Arabian! In addition to being the oldest breed in the world, the Arabian horse is part of world history. Figures such as Alexander the Great, Napoleon and even George Washington rode in the Purebred Arabian. As the name suggests, Arabian Horses were bred in the Middle East, but their origin remains a great mystery, just as their breed is surrounded by legends. What is known is that in writings dating back more than 3,000 years, the Arabian horse remains exactly as he was. Breed curiosities As you may have already realized, this breed is surrounded by mysteries, history and curiosities. In addition to the legends and its unknown origin, the Arabian horse was widely used in world equestrian history as a breeder of other breeds, for example, Quarter Horse, English Thoroughbred, Hanoverian, Trakehner, Orloff, French Saddle, among many others. Another thing that many people don’t know is that many Arabian horses have one less vertebra in their back. Therefore, in general, they are smaller in relation to length. Arabian horses also have one fewer rib, which gives them much more resistance when covering long distances. Breed bloodlines There are three best-known lineages when it comes to the genealogy of the breed:

Egyptian: it is the “purest” heritage of the legendary Purebred Arabian. Recent Egyptians have as a historical landmark the dedication of ruler Mohamed Ali, leader of Egypt when the territory still belonged to the Turkish Empire. Crabbet: Crabbet, in turn, began in the 19th century, through Lady Anne Blunt and her husband who went to the Middle East to look for good horses. With much study and careful breeding, it was in Lady Anne’s hands that the Crabbet lineage became known throughout the world. Polish: it was during the war with Turkey that Arabian horses were brought to Poland. During the First World War they were almost decimated. According to studies, only 25 mares were still alive in 1918. In the book The Arabian Horse in Brazil with texts by Mario Braga, photos by Marco Terranova and editing by Andrea Jakobsson, launched in 2014 as one of the ways to celebrate 50 years of the Brazilian Association of Arabian Horse Breeders (ABCCA), brings together the trajectory of the animal in the country and photographic essays that show its different types of use in the national territory. Braga states that the first records of the animal’s arrival in Brazil date back to 1860, but there is little information about the import and use of animals during that period. The first official breeder of the Arabian horse was Guilherme Echenique Filho, who in the 1920s imported seven animals from a stud farm in Argentina to live in Rio Grande do Sul. The Arabian horse has left an indelible mark on human history, and his legacy continues to amaze present and future generations.
