McBurney Transport, one of Ireland’s largest independently owned logistics groups, recently strengthened its partnership with Aquarius by extending its tachograph analysis software contract for another five years.
Across the group McBurney Transport operates more than 370 vehicles, supplemented by over 1050 trailers which include 700 refrigerated trailers, and has more than 1000 drivers on its system, comprising a mix of full- and part-time and agency drivers.
To handle the compliance responsibilities involved with managing a team of this size, across eight sites and in four countries with depots in Northern and Southern Ireland, England and Scotland, McBurney Transport started using ClockWatcher Elite. Additionally, they integrated eSIGN technology for managing infringement sign-offs and compliance responsibilities across its multiple depots.
90% Reduction in Administration Time: The company has drastically cut the time spent on tachograph analysis, allowing the team to focus on other critical areas.
Real-Time Compliance Monitoring: The dashboard provides instant insights into missing mileage and unaccounted vehicle movements, enhancing operational oversight.
Seamless Auditing: During a recent audit, the number of reports they could access at a click of a button made the whole process seamless.
Unmatched Support and Expertise:
McBurney Transport commended Aquarius for its customer support and in-depth knowledge of Drivers’ Hours Law and WTD, which provides additional value beyond the inherent capabilities of the software.
Lyle Watson, Group Training Manager at McBurney Transport, said:
“I’ve worked with tachographs for more than 30 years and encountered many systems, but I’ve never found a system as good as ClockWatcher Elite, in terms of the level of data you can analyse, cross-reference, and report on.”
McBurney Transport’s decision to extend its partnership with Aquarius demonstrates the efficiency, reliability, and support provided by the Aquarius team. The real-time data accessibility and automation have transformed the company’s compliance processes.

• Time & Attendance: For payroll purposes i.e. sick days and annual leave, ensuring accurate and efficient payroll processing.
Comprehensive Reporting Suite
Underpinning these features is a comprehensive reporting suite that serves as an essential management tool.
This functionality is especially valuable for cross-referencing data, audit preparation, and supporting Earned Recognition, enabling continuous monitoring and enhancement of compliance standards.
“By analysing data in greater depth, businesses can uncover opportunities for improvement, optimise costs, and enhance operational efficiencies – important factors for companies of all sizes.”
Mark Johnston Managing Director
Wickes Building Supplies Limited, a leading home improvement retailer with over 230 stores across the UK, relies on a well-managed fleet of 250+ vehicles to ensure smooth logistics for both trade and domestic customers. Maintaining high standards of compliance and cost efficiency is critical to their transport operations.
Back in 2020, Wickes sought to enhance two important aspects of their fleet management:
Compliance & Maintenance – To achieve DVSA’s Earned Recognition (ER) status, Wickes needed to transition from a paper-based system to an approved digital vehicle maintenance solution that could provide real-time compliance reporting.
Cost Control – While their leased fleet included full repair and maintenance agreements, non-repair costs (e.g., damages) were historically tracked using spreadsheets, offering limited visibility and control over spending. Wickes wanted a solution to analyse and optimise these costs.
This led to Wickes partnering with Aquarius, initially implementing Asset Maintenance and later integrating it with Asset Finance.
By integrating Asset Maintenance and Asset Finance, Wickes has transformed its fleet management approach - enhancing compliance, improving efficiency, and driving cost savings.
Earned Recognition Achieved – With Asset Maintenance, Wickes successfully gained ER accreditation in 2021, demonstrating a commitment to roadworthiness and compliance.
Streamlined Maintenance Management – Asset Maintenance eliminated paperwork, enabling effortless reporting to the DVSA and easier fleet compliance monitoring.
Cost Savings & Accountability – Asset Finance provided deeper cost insights, allowing Wickes to challenge third-party operators on damages and reduce unnecessary expenses.
Operational Flexibility – The systems adapted to Wickes’ unique needs, allowing custom cost categories without additional development fees.
Mark Wheeler, Wickes’ National Transport and Compliance Manager, said:
“As a company that operates to the highest standards of compliance, one of the biggest benefits of going through the ER process, was moving away from a paper-based system. Asset Maintenance has transformed the way we work and Asset Finance has been a game changer in how we can dynamically manage, track and report on repair and maintenance costs.”
Asset Maintenance transforms how transport operators manage company vehicles, trailers, forklifts, and other assets requiring regular maintenance or inspections. By offering 24/7 access to fleet maintenance and asset data from any webenabled device, this system enhances visibility and control over your fleet operations. DVSA Earned Recognition is a voluntary scheme that allows operators to prove they meet high driver and vehicle standards. In return, they’re less likely to face roadside inspections and will gain recognition as exemplary operators. As part of the scheme, operators use DVSA-approved IT systems - like those from Aquarius - to automatically monitor and report KPIs on vehicle maintenance and drivers’ hours every four weeks, supporting ongoing compliance.
SPOTLIGHT: EARNED RECOGNITION
SECTOR: WASTE MANAGEMENT
Waste-A-Way Recycling Ltd is a specialist bulk haulage provider for waste and recycling materials with depots in Basildon, Colchester, and Rochester. The company was determined to become the first waste disposal and recycling haulier to achieve Earned Recognition (ER), but to achieve this, they needed to unify its depots’ driver and vehicle data management processes while improving compliance efficiency.
Seeking a seamless solution, they reached out to Aquarius to integrate ClockWatcher Elite, Asset Maintenance and Defect Check – DVSA-approved software solutions - and unify operations across all three depots. On Aquarius’s advice, Waste-AWay consolidated its driver databases, allowing the company to assess compliance against the ER standard. As part of this, the implementation of Driver Debrief, E-Sign, and remote downloading also significantly reduced infringements.
By transitioning to a fully digital system, Waste-AWay has revolutionised its operations. The company can now deploy resources more efficiently, including mobile mechanics, and has full real-time visibility of driver, vehicle, and asset data across all depots. This transformation has not only helped the company maintain ER, but has also significantly enhanced operational efficiency for the benefit of staff and customers.
Ian Malone, Transport and Health & Safety Manager at Waste-A-Way, said:
“ This journey started as a way to stand out with ER, but it has completely revolutionised how we operate. With Aquarius, we’ve moved to a fully digital system, giving us real-time visibility of our driver, vehicle, and asset data across three depots. This has transformed the way we work, benefiting both our staff and customers.”
Since implementing Aquarius’s ER-approved driver and vehicle software solutions, Waste-AWay has achieved:

Significant reduction in vehicle off-road (VOR) days through digital defect checks and maintenance tracking.
Improved operational efficiency, with their in-house team of mobile fitters who do all the PMIs for each of the depots, instantly assigned tasks, creating massive time and cost efficiencies.
Seamless compliance reporting for ER, providing a complete audit trail for all vehicles and assets.
L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage Ltd, founded over 40 years ago, is a leading provider of operated and self-drive plant hire, haulage, and transport services to the UK construction industry. Based in Hemel Hempstead, the company operates a fleet of 160 tippers and grab lorries with over 120 drivers, and has built a strong reputation for safety, innovation, and operational excellence.
As part of a five-year strategic plan the transport team, set a goal to achieve ER status. The key challenge was transitioning from a paper-based system to a fully digital, centralised compliance solution that would improve efficiency, traceability, and sustainability across multiple depots.
In 2019, L Lynch worked with Aquarius to implement ClockWatcher Elite - they also became one of the first FORS members to adopt Document Manager. To complete the transition, Asset Maintenance was introduced in 2021, which linked seamlessly with the Driver Defect App.
Stephen Bremner, the Fleet & Health and Safety Director at L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage Limited, said:
“With Aquarius, it’s not just one thing that made the difference - it’s the fully integrated approach of having both driver and vehicle data on a single platform. This not only helped us prepare for ER but also enabled us to manage and sustain the accreditation.”
Gabby Lawrence, Transport Compliance Manager, added:
“It has also been Aquarius’s unwavering support over the last few years that has got us to where we are today - the team are also always open to our development ideas and quick to respond.”
Achieved Earned Recognition accreditation, ahead of schedule.
Seamless integration of tachograph analysis, document management, and asset maintenance.
Enhanced compliance monitoring, ensuring all drivers and vehicles meet ER standards.
Significant time and cost savings, reducing paperwork and vehicle downtime.
Improved operational efficiency, with real-time driver and vehicle data across all depots.
Going digital became the lynchpin of L Lynch’s ER success. By centralising driver and vehicle compliance management on one platform, the company has improved efficiency, reduced administrative workload, and enhanced safety standards. This transformation has not only secured ER accreditation but also futureproofed operations in line with the company’s strategic vision for Net Zero and Digital innovation.
In today’s technological world managing tachograph and vehicle data isn’t just about compliance; integrating the data with other key driver and fleet activities on one digital platform reduces administration, creates cost savings, improves safety, and enhances overall efficiency.
