After one of the best summers in recent years (at least in terms of the weather and some great sporting events), over the last few weeks, we’ve definitely seen a shift into autumn mode. So, with temperatures noticeably dropping, the nights now drawing in at a rapid rate and leaves now scattered just about everywhere, the shorts have been well and truly packed away. We can only hope (perhaps that should be pray) that next year’s weather is as kind for our industry as 2025’s has been. But the autumnal change doesn’t mean that our swimming shorts or indeed costumes have to be retired just yet – far from it!

Why? Well inside this latest issue, we take our annual look at the latest pool enclosure solutions that are extending pool use and the outdoor swimming season whilst simultaneously providing security, reducing running costs and minimising the effort involved in outdoor pool ownership. Counter-current systems are also under the spotlight as we examine the latest products which provide pools, particularly those with a smaller footprint, with a powerful option resulting in a more complete swimming pool experience.

If relaxation and recuperation rather than exercise is what you’re looking for, hot tubs are also featured as we examine a number of premium models from various brands that cost around the £10,000 mark or more. These are some of the best portable hot tubs that money can buy and they provide ultimate in tub experiences too. Looking for something that’s still high-end for relaxation, but perhaps wanting something that’s different or even bespoke? Then we have a piece on tiled

Maybe what you’re looking for hasn’t been launched yet, after all, a great many products are traditionally held back for release at industry shows that typically take place during the out of season autumn and winter months. With that in mind, we take a look at two returning biennial exhibitions – Germany’s aquanale event, and Spain’s Piscina Barcelona – although we clearly can’t cover the many products that will be shown at each. Both are important wet leisure events for all sectors across the industry and each is displaying more of an international feel with every new edition that runs. These large-scale gatherings not only provide a platform for new product launches, but they also provide the chance to catch up with peers and exchange stories, advice and thoughts on the season which has just passed, plus what may be on the horizon.

When it comes to industry suppliers, we’ve dedicated pieces on water care brand HTH and their latest product launches, plus we shine a light on Norwegian filtration and water treatment company Aquaservice as they open a new UK-based headquarters.

As if that wasn’t enough, STA Pool Plant Tutor Chris Bateman takes a look at the subject of disinfection within public swimming pool environments, plus we’ve an Opinion piece on new guidance issued for operators on the subject of ‘Automated Monitoring and Detection Systems’.

There’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA including thoughts on the latest ‘State of the UK Swimming Industry Report’, plus, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and further afield.

So, that’s everything covered in this latest issue and hopefully we’ve provided a little bit of something for everyone inside. As always, I hope you enjoy reading it.

Total Fitness Unveils Energy-efficient Pool Rebuild At Merseyside Club

Total Fitness, one the North’s leading midmarket health club brands, has unveiled a major swimming pool rebuild at its Prenton-based club that is set to deliver a minimum 61% reduction in heat loss and potential energy cost savings of more than £21,000 per year.

The project, completed in just 12 weeks, replaces an ageing steel pool with a PCS modular panel system – a type of prefabricated pool structure made from lightweight, waterproof and highly insulated panels.

This technology, more commonly used in high-end spa and wellness developments, is designed to be quicker to install, better at holding heat and more durable than traditional pool builds.

Installed by Hydra Leisure, the system’s thermally insulating composite panels achieve a U-value of W/m²K, far exceeding Part L building regulation requirements, which set energy efficiency standards for buildings.

Independent testing by the University of Manchester has shown PCS pools retain heat significantly better than uninsulated concrete alternatives, cutting energy demand while extending the lifespan of surrounding infrastructure.

By improving atmospheric conditions beneath the pool, the upgrade also helps protect steelwork and plant equipment from corrosion, reducing long-term maintenance costs.

While members enjoy the same swim experience, they now benefit from a more stable water temperature and reduced environmental impact.

The Prenton project reflects a growing industry shift towards energyefficient retrofits as operators tackle rising utility bills and carbon reduction targets.

Graeme Dick, Head of Property at Total Fitness, said: “This rebuild shows what’s possible when you combine necessity with innovation. By working with PCS and Hydra Leisure, we’ve delivered a facility that’s faster to install, cheaper to run and built to last – all while reducing our environmental footprint. It’s a model we can replicate as the sector looks for smarter, more sustainable solutions.”

Work Begins On New £24m West Midlands Leisure Centre

Work has started on site in preparation for a brand-new £24m Haden Hill Leisure Centre in Cradley Heath, West Midlands.

The new leisure centre will feature a wide range of facilities including a main swimming pool and a learner pool.

Contractor Speller Metcalfe has now moved onto the site to strip out and then demolish the old centre, with building work on the new one set to start in January 2026.

The redevelopment of the centre, which is expected to open to the public in spring 2027, is being funded by UK Government funding, Sport England and Sandwell Council. The works are being delivered by the council’s trusted leisure development partner, Alliance Leisure, and were procured

using the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd. The project team also includes Roberts Limbrick architects, Axiom Project Services, Design Active Ltd and Greenwood Projects.

Councillor Suzanne Hartwell, Sandwell Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community, said: “Over the past decade, we have built five new leisure centres including the magnificent Sandwell Aquatics Centre. This investment at Haden Hill Leisure Centre will ensure we are maintaining our high-quality leisure offer to all residents of Sandwell across our six towns.”

Julia Goddard, Regional Director at Alliance Leisure, added: “It’s fantastic to see work progress on the new Haden Hill Leisure Centre. We have worked tirelessly with the council and our other project partners to produce a scheme that will truly change the lives of local residents for the better.”

THOUSANDS FLOCK TO BASILDON FOR POOL REOPENING CELEBRATION

More than 3,500 people turned out to Basildon Sporting Village at the end of September to celebrate the long-awaited reopening of the Essex town’s main swimming pool.

Work included fitting a new moveable floor system, replacing the pool’s dividing boom and giving the changing rooms a complete overhaul.

The £1m upgrade was officially unveiled with a free community open day hosted by operator Everyone Active, that saw families enjoying activities across the whole site.

Almost 400 swimmers booked into the 50m main pool on its first day back in action, while a further 72 enjoyed sessions in the teaching pool.

Shaun Beagle, Everyone Active’s Contract Manager at Basildon Sporting Village, said: “The pool has always been such an important part of the community and it was brilliant to see so many people back enjoying the water and the facilities.”

Hove Leisure Centre Transformation Contract Secured By Willmott Dixon

Willmott Dixon has been appointed by Brighton & Hove City Council as preferred contractor for the £65m transformation of the iconic King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove, creating a world-class seafront leisure destination for the vibrant coastal community.

The comprehensive redevelopment will replace the ageing facility with a modern, accessible and sustainable leisure centre that maximises its unique seafront location. The new facility will feature sea views from the swimming pools, gym and café, alongside extensive landscaping connecting to a revitalised public realm.

Work is expected to begin on site in early 2026, with the transformed facility opening in spring 2028. The existing King Alfred Leisure Centre will remain operational throughout the development process for as long as feasible.

The state-of-the-art facility will include a leisure water area with family entertainment zone, a significantly larger fitness suite, and enhanced

accessibility throughout. The building is designed to set new standards for coastal leisure facilities through innovative design and cutting-edge sustainable technologies.

Richard Poulter, Managing Director in the South at Willmott Dixon: “The new King Alfred Leisure Centre presents an exciting opportunity to create a world-class facility that maximises its unique seafront location through innovative design and sustainable construction practices. Drawing on our extensive experience of delivering over 160 leisure facilities nationwide – including 108 swimming pools – we bring proven expertise in complex waterfront developments and environmental resilience.”

Willmott Dixon will work alongside Brighton & Hove City Council’s main delivery partner Alliance Leisure, procured through the UK Leisure Framework, and a specialist design team including GT3 Architects, DHA Planning Group, Engenuity Ltd, VZDV Consulting Engineers and Hadron Consulting for project management.

Heatstar Celebrates A Successful 25 Years With AstralPool UK

Heatstar is proud to be acknowledging not one but two special anniversaries this year. The company is celebrating 45 years of delivering highly energy efficient environmental control systems for swimming pools, plus they are also taking time to acknowledge a special anniversary shared with AstralPool UK as this year marks the 25th anniversary of two companies sharing a successful trading partnership together.

The story started back in 2000 when a working relationship was forged which would see AstralPool UK develop an integral role in the sales and distribution of Heatstar systems to the UK swimming pool market. The relationship is one that mutually benefits both parties. AstralPool takes a hands-on approach with the sales, logistics, and distribution of Heatstar products, which then allows Heatstar to concentrate on its core strengths – product development and innovation, quality manufacturing and after-sales service.

To mark this significant milestone, both companies recently came together with Heatstar hosting at their head office on the Isle of Wight.

The AstralPool team were greeted with a champagne reception followed by an in-depth tour of Heatstar’s manufacturing facilities, stores and sales offices. The day was capped off with an evening meal at a local award-winning restaurant where both companies could relax and swap stories from the past 25 years.   Reflecting on the event, Joe Venables, Commercial Director at Heatstar said: “Celebrating 25 years was a great opportunity to come together and reinforce our long standing and successful collaboration, it is rare these days to find time in our busy schedules to meet en mass, but we thank AstralPool UK for taking the time to come over to our island. It was a great evening, the sun was shining, drinks were flowing and the evening was filled with fun and laughter till the early hours.”

Looping Group Acquires Staffordshire’s Waterworld Resort

A leading European operator of leisure parks has acquired Waterworld Leisure Group, owners of the Waterworld resort in Stoke-on-Trent, in a multimillion pound deal.

Discussions between Frenchbased business the Looping Group and Waterworld’s owners reportedly began over a year ago with the shared vision of ensuring the long-term growth and success of the flagship attraction.

The exact value of the deal has not been disclosed, but a statement from Waterworld said this acquisition marks a new chapter for one of the UK’s top water park attractions, which has been a landmark destination in the

Midlands for more than three decades.

Since opening in 1989, Waterworld has welcomed millions of visitors. Under the leadership of Mo Chaudry, who took over the aqua park in 1999, the resort has doubled in size, with continuous investment and expansion of its facilities.

Waterworld becomes the Looping’s 4th leisure attraction in

the UK, their 23rd in Europe and the 6th waterpark in their portfolio.

This acquisition also enables Looping to strengthen its presence as a dominant force in the region’s leisure sector and form a trio of nearby attractions with Drayton Manor Resort and West Midlands Safari Park already under its ownership.

In line with Looping’s mission, each of these parks will still maintain its own identity and positioning. Waterworld will continue to grow and develop with the same entrepreneurial DNA and values that have taken the attraction from strength-tostrength under Chaudry’s direction historically, and Looping intend to take the complex even further.

As Dyfed Thompson-Smith nears the conclusion of his two-year term as President of the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF), members of the wet leisure industry gathered in Portsmouth at the start of September for a celebratory weekend. The BSPF President’s Weekend is a cherished tradition that recognises the outgoing President’s contributions and this year’s event was a heartfelt tribute to Dyfed’s leadership, vision and the community spirit he has helped foster.

The weekend began on Friday afternoon with a relaxed check-in and a welcome dinner where longstanding colleagues reunited, new connections were made and the atmosphere was one of warmth and appreciation.

Saturday’s itinerary showcased Portsmouth’s rich maritime heritage. Guests embarked on a nautical sightseeing tour, offering panoramic views of the historic dockyard, naval vessels, bustling harbour, dockyard museums, Spinnaker Tower and the nearby Gunwharf Quays – Portsmouth’s premier shopping and dining destination. It was the perfect setting to unwind, indulge and connect with colleagues in a more informal environment.

The highlight of the weekend was Saturday

STA

evening’s gala dinner at the Queens Hotel, a venue renowned for its historic charm and fine cuisine and the elegant surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for tributes to Dyfed’s presidency.

Dyfed, who is also General Manager – AstralPool UK, took on the BSPF presidency in early 2024. From the outset, he championed collaboration, innovation and inclusivity as the cornerstones of his leadership. His presidency has been defined by a commitment to strengthening member engagement, promoting industry standards and preparing the Federation for future growth.

One of Dyfed’s most significant contributions has been his support for the rebranding of SPATA and BISHTA. Throughout his term, he has also been a passionate advocate for education and training, pushing for improved resources and opportunities across the wet leisure sector.

Launches New Level 3 Pool Lifeguard Qualification

STA is excited to announce the launch of its new Level 3 Pool Lifeguard qualification, marking the next stage in the development of lifeguard training.

Developed in consultation with employers and lifesaving training professionals, the new qualification introduces a unique new blended learning option for Pool Lifeguarding and a dual first aid certification model – designed to reduce operational pressures for employers while improving accessibility and flexibility for learners.

Building on the strong foundations of the Level 2 qualification, this new Level 3 offers enhanced curriculum content and an updated delivery model. The content has been expanded to further reflect that being a pool lifeguard is an important, professional role within the leisure industry, including enhanced ‘on-the-job’ knowledge and skills to support pool lifeguards being work-ready on certification.

Alongside this, the structure has been modernised to include flexible blended learning, an optional backboard unit and integrated requirements for First Aid at Work

certification – streamlining delivery and reducing duplication for both learners and ATCs.

Now regulated at Level 3 on the Ofqual Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), the qualification is also eligible for UCAS tariff points – giving learners the opportunity to gain recognition that supports progression into further or higher education.

Significantly, the new blended learning option allows learners to complete up to nine hours of theory online, which could reduce faceto-face contact time to 26 hours.

On successful completion, learners will also automatically receive both a Pool Lifeguard certificate and a separate Adult and Paediatric First Aid certificate, which covers the full First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid qualification content – with no need for duplicate assessments or registrations.

Harvia Introduces Fenix And Updated Smart Sauna App

Harvia has introduced two new innovations designed to make sauna control intuitive, modern and future-ready: the Harvia Fenix control panel and the MyHarvia mobile app.

This launch marks a strategic step forward in Harvia’s role to shape the global sauna market through intuitive design and digital connectivity. Both Fenix and MyHarvia feature the same user interface design, ensuring a consistent and easy-to-use experience across devices.

“We wanted to create something that feels natural and safe to use and is ready for the future. With Fenix and the new smart MyHarvia sauna app, sauna control becomes effortless – whether you’re a first-time user or a seasoned sauna enthusiast. And because everything is connected, updates and improvements come automatically, keeping the experience fresh over time,” said Markus Wörmanseder, Head of Products and Solutions at Harvia Group.

The Harvia Fenix control panel is more than just a touchscreen. It’s a smart companion for a sauna. It learns how the heater performs and uses that data to optimise heating times. Users simply set when they want the sauna to be ready and Fenix takes care of the rest.

To make the experience even more personal, Fenix offers three predefined heating profiles – Mild, Cozy and Hot – each tailored to different sauna preferences. These profiles provide ready-made settings for different types of sauna experiences and can be customised or replaced with personal favorites.

The smart and updated MyHarvia sauna app complements the panel with remote control capabilities, usage statistics and maintenance notifications. With built-in Wi-Fi, both Fenix and MyHarvia receive over-the-air updates, ensuring sauna setups stay up to date and evolve over time. MyHarvia app can be downloaded from the Google Play and Apple App store.

Harvia Fenix is designed for both private consumers and commercial users, supporting traditional and combi heaters in home and professional environments.

Fluidra Ventures Invests In Hotta To Accelerate Energy-Efficient Pool Heating

Fluidra recently announced a strategic investment in Hotta, a fast-growing climate-tech startup delivering plug-and-play heat recovery systems powered by data centre operations. Through Fluidra Ventures, its investment fund, the company strengthens its commitment to sustainability and expands its suite of Digital Services for commercial pools.

Hotta operates a unique infrastructure: modular data centre units that serve a dual purpose –processing digital workloads while simultaneously generating thermal energy. These units are installed at or near customer sites and directly connect to the pool facility’s water heating systems. Commercial pool operators simply use Hotta as they would a traditional heater – with no upfront investment, lower energy costs and zero added complexity.

Heating is one of the largest energy expenditures in commercial pools, often consuming up to 30% of facility energy. Hotta’s solution allows operators to reduce heating costs by up to 70%, while eliminating the capital burden of purchasing or installing new heating equipment.

The service-based model is simple: Hotta owns and operates the infrastructure, managing both the thermal delivery and the computing operations.

Pool facilities only pay for the heat they use –transforming waste heat into usable, low-cost, lowcarbon energy.

“With this investment, Fluidra continues to reinforce its commitment in sustainability and our vision for energy-efficient, sustainable aquatic experiences,” said David Tapias, Director of Innovation at Fluidra. “Hotta’s infrastructure-asa-service model aligns perfectly with the needs of commercial pool operators looking to reduce costs, meet carbon goals and avoid operational disruption.”

Although Hotta’s solution is not pool-specific, its ability to deliver predictable, on-demand thermal energy makes it particularly relevant for municipal, hospitality and wellness pools seeking to decarbonise their operations. It supports multiple heating applications – pool water, showers, HVAC, spa zones – offering unmatched flexibility and zero emissions at the point of use.

Award-winning Innovations For A Waterconscious World

Waterco’s MultiCyclone DUO is reshaping how the pool and spa industry approaches water efficiency.

Originally launched in 2007, the MultiCyclone pre-filter set a new benchmark in centrifugal filtration. That innovation evolved with MultiCyclone Plus, which integrated a cartridge filter and earned ‘Best Product’ at SPATEX in 2011. Today, the latest generation

– MultiCyclone DUO – continues to build on that legacy with enhanced watersaving technology and even more compact performance.

By reducing filter maintenance, minimising backwashing and extending cartridge life, MultiCyclone DUO is helping pool professionals deliver smarter, more sustainable builds. And that impact is being recognised industry wide.

At Australia’s 2025 SPASA Awards, the MultiCyclone DUO has earned top honours across the country:

• Northern Territory (NT): Gold – Product of the Year and Innovative Product Award

• Australian Capital Territory (ACT), New South Wales (NSW), Victoria (VIC) and Western Australia (WA): Finalist – Innovative Product Award

Beyond the MultiCyclone DUO, Waterco’s Vitale Mineral Plus received gold in NT and finalist recognition in ACT and Queensland (QLD), reinforcing its position as a standout new product. Waterco’s NT and South Australia (SA) branches were recognised as top suppliers, with gold in SA and a finalist placing in NT, while Pat Taylor was acknowledged in VIC as a finalist in the ‘Supplier Salesperson’ category, highlighting the strength of the company’s people as well as their products.

These accolades are not just wins for Waterco. They are shared with their suppliers, industry partners and customers, whose trust and collaboration make innovation possible.

As more regions face water stress and rising utility costs, the MultiCyclone DUO offers a proven, scalable solution for resource-efficient pool design. What’s working in Australia can support builders and technicians worldwide in meeting the growing demand for sustainable systems.

This is innovation that goes beyond awards. It’s about making every drop count.

Studio Apostoli Designs New Italian Thermal Park

Four distinct thematic zones define an ambitious new Thermal Park in Civitavecchia, found within the Lazio region of Italy. Covering approximately 26,000 square metres, the site comprises a large outdoor area arranged across three terraces, designed to follow the land’s natural contours, alongside an architectural complex that revitalises the historic rural structure known as Casale dei Bagni. Studio Apostoli’s design offers a contemporary reimagining of the Roman era through four overarching themes – Mare Nostrum, The Eastern Provinces, The Great North and Imperial Rome. These form the foundation of an immersive, multi-sensory visitor experience, expressed through sculpted pathways, aromatic trails and panoramic viewing points that harmonise with the surrounding terrain.

The park comprises 14 pools, spanning a total of 1,440 square metres and sourced from natural thermal springs. Each is positioned to follow the site’s morphology, remaining discreetly nestled into the landscape and out of view from neighbouring areas. Prefabricated and adaptable construction modules have been used to reduce environmental impact and accelerate build times.

The visitor experience begins with Mare Nostrum, which includes the restored Casale dei Bagni. Linked to the upper terrace by a pergola, this area features 32°C thermal pools, ornamental fountains and a leisure zone enhanced by dramatic evening lighting. In The Eastern Provinces, circular structures inspired by the layout of the Oracle of Delphi house hammams, lounge spaces and support areas. These surround pools of varying temperatures and salinity, designed for rest, recovery and relaxation. The Great North offers a contrast of thermal experiences, including a Kneipp circuit, a panoramic Finnish sauna and cold (16°C) and hot (40°C) plunge pools. The journey concludes with Imperial Rome, where thermal and non-thermal pools, multi-level waterfalls and a refined lounge bar create a contemporary homage to Roman grandeur.

Reflecting On Summer And Looking Forward

Itrust that you have made the most of the warm weather this year? Most of the industry and country has. However, with all the fantastic weather in 2025, the downside is that the lack of rain has caused a large number of customers to face water companies activating ‘Temporary Use Bans’ (TUBs). TUBs are better known as ‘hosepipe bans’, and it has been reassuring to see that the hard work undertaken by the industry a few years ago (during the last ‘hosepipe bans’) has helped to create a new Drought Management Code of Practice for the water companies to follow.

Water companies use TUBs to reduce water consumption from consumers (in the first instance), if water levels need to be artificially managed, due to a lack of rainfall putting a strain on the available supply. It is possible that the drought restrictions can then be escalated to commercial/business use at a later stage, but so far, this has not been necessary.

Having provided a great deal of feedback to the water companies and their appointed researchers, much of what our industry asked for has been accepted as reasonable. Domestic customers with service and maintenance contracts can still have their water topped up in their swimming pool or hot tub.

The good weather was gratefully received

After a busy summer, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes rounds up a number of events that have taken place over recent months and highlights what’s on the horizon

by those who travelled to Portsmouth for the President’s Weekend hosted by Dyfed and Amanda Thompson-Smith. The city has plenty to offer, and guests enjoyed spending time in the Historic Dockyard, where they could view some of the iconic ships, including the Mary Rose, HMS Victory, and HMS Warrior. Some of the guests also found time to go shopping in Gunwharf Quays, and/or to take a trip up the Spinnaker Tower! Thanks are due to Claire Maguire for organising the Weekend, and also to Sallie Leslie-Golding for her contribution to the event. Read more about it later in this issue.

Whilst writing, I’d like to offer huge thanks to Dash Ganeson for his tireless efforts, along with the EDI Working Group, I am delighted to report that the industry has so far committed just over £1,000 to the GoFundMe page to help deliver training on this important subject.

It is that time of year again for Awards too, so a final reminder that the BISHTA and SPATA entries must be submitted online by Friday 31 October. View the Trade section of the SPATA/BISHTA websites for details.

A huge thank you to all our sponsors. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please get in touch with Claire Maguire for details on the available opportunities.

The winners will be announced at the annual Industry Gala Evening at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Tuesday 3 February 2026, and please remember that attendance at the event is open to the whole industry!

Every business owner has, at some point, to decide whether to sell their company or if they can, pass it on to family members and/ or staff involved in the business, such as an Employee-Owned Trust (EOT).

Having invested so much time in establishing and growing the business, this can be a hard decision to get to grips with. It is therefore wise to seek external help from professionals who can guide you through the various possibilities. On page 28, you can read about the sort of advice that is pertinent. UK Swimming Sector Shows Resilience Amid Ongoing Pool Closures

In

this latest issue, SPATA

reflects on the 2025 State of the UK Swimming Industry Report produced by market intelligence specialist Leisure DB

The UK’s swimming sector continues to face significant challenges, as revealed in Leisure DB’s newly published ‘State of the UK Swimming Industry Report 2025’. While the rate of decline in pool provision has slowed compared to previous years, the overall trend remains concerning, with experts calling for urgent action, innovation and collaboration.

In the 12 months to 31 March 2025, the total number of UK sites operating a swimming pool fell to 2,882 – a 0.5% drop from the previous year. This is a less dramatic fall than the 2% decline recorded in the previous 12-month period. The total number of pools also decreased by 0.4%, resulting in a national count of 4,257.

The report, compiled by market intelligence specialist Leisure DB, offers a comprehensive overview of the sector’s current state, including pool numbers, locations, openings and closures, fees, facilities and operational models. It also features commentary from leading operators and experts, providing valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

Swim England CEO Andy Salmon highlights the severity of the situation, noting that “76% of the publicly accessible water space lost in the past 15 years has been lost since 2020.” GLL’s Andrew Clark added: “Pools are drowning. Without increased support, smaller operators will disappear and pool closures will continue to accelerate.”

Despite these concerns, the report also captures a sense of cautious optimism. Many operators report continued strong demand for swimming, even if participation has plateaued following the post-COVID boom. Encouragingly, this plateau sits above pre-pandemic levels, indicating a sustained interest in swimming across the UK.

Financially, the sector is adapting. The average public sector pay-per-swim fee has risen to £5.80, reflecting both inflationary pressures and a reassessment of value. GLL reports a 10% increase in swimming lesson income following price adjustments. “In

spite of these price rises, sales have rocketed this year,” said Andrew Clark. “It just shows that in a lot of cases; public leisure is still under-pricing what it does.”

However, the sector is not without its challenges. Sport England’s Moving Communities survey (October 2024) found that while swimming remains the most quoted main activity, its share has declined over the past four years. Fitness and group exercise are gaining ground, indicating a shift in consumer preferences and prompting swimming operators to adapt.

In response, operators are calling for greater innovation and investment –particularly in programming and staff training. Leisure DB founder David Minton noted in his foreword: “Although there is some good news for the UK’s swim sector –most notably where new pools are a major component of regeneration – this year’s report continues to highlight net losses of pool provision.”

He added: “Those still operating have to work harder to satisfy the demand from the myriad of users; this report shows how constant innovation and programming continues to drive the carrying capacity of

While the rate of decline in pool provision has slowed compared to previous years, the overall trend remains concerning, with experts calling for urgent action, innovation and collaboration”

the reduced water volume.”

One of the most promising developments highlighted in the report is the emergence of a new era of collaboration. The Swimming Alliance – a coalition of leading organisations in the sector – is beginning to deliver early wins, offering hope for more coordinated and effective advocacy and action.

SPATA echoes the importance of collaboration and is proud to contribute to raising standards and awareness across the industry. As Managing Director, Chris Hayes explained: “There is plenty of scope for working together in our industry, to raise standards, awareness and knowledge to minimise the chances of mistakes being made and to embrace the changes that are impacting us all.”

Bringing stakeholders together can quickly boost the sharing of ideas and information. Conferences, webinars and exhibitions provide excellent opportunities for this to occur. Leisure DB has shown how their events can make a difference, fostering meaningful dialogue through active networking opportunities.

Elevate, PWTAG, SPATEX and STA provide other opportunities for collaboration. At SPATA, we already work closely with many different associations, such as BISHTA and, of course, with SPATEX, which, as an industry-owned show, reinvests a significant portion of its profit back into industry promotion through the PIP (Pool Industry Promotions) Committee.

SPATA also collaborates with ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers), which offers a range of courses and other support to its individual members. Much of the workshop programme at SPATEX is overseen by ISPE, with invaluable contributions from STA, PWTAG, IoS, RLSS UK, LCA, WMSoc and others. The education programmes at these exhibitions and conferences help to update the industry with the latest knowledge.

SPATA commends Leisure DB for making this flagship report freely available and for its continued commitment to supporting the industry through robust data and insight. Succession Planning For Small And Medium-sized Businesses

In this issue, Executive Growth Coach Falguni Desai shines the spotlight on the subject of succession planning – an often overlooked topic that has a great deal of relevance to many businesses operating across the

UK wet leisure industry

As business owners, we often focus so much on daily operations that we neglect planning our eventual exit. Yet extracting maximum value requires strategic planning that begins years before you step away. For businesses with 10-100 employees, succession planning isn’t merely an exit strategy – it’s a business optimisation process that requires 3-5 years to implement effectively. Without proper planning, you risk undervaluing your life’s work or leaving your business vulnerable after your departure.

BUILDING A SELFSUSTAINING BUSINESS

The foundation of effective succession planning lies in transitioning from chaos to control. This begins with documenting your vision, mission and values – not just as abstract concepts, but as clearly articulated principles that guide your business and team.

DELIVERY/OPERATIONS

Next, examine your delivery mastery. Have you developed standardised processes that ensure a consistent client experience regardless of who delivers the service? This consistency is crucial for potential buyers who need assurance that the business won’t falter without you.

FINANCES

Financial mastery is equally vital. Are you regularly reviewing your profit and loss statements, balance sheet and cash flow forecasts? Reviewing monthly management

accounts provides invaluable benefits: spotting trends early, making informed investment decisions, maintaining healthy margins and demonstrating to potential buyers that the business is financially disciplined. Identify two or three key performance indicators that drive your business and build a dashboard around them. Potential buyers want to see robust financial management systems, not just healthy numbers.

TIME AND PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

The most significant challenge for many founders is mastering time and effective delegation. Are you still involved in every aspect of the business? Begin transferring knowledge and authority to your team, particularly those tasks that don’t specifically require your input. When you can comfortably take a holiday without constant contact, you’re ready to consider appointing an MD to handle dayto-day operations, freeing you to focus on strategy.

EXIT OPTIONS

There are several paths to consider when planning your exit:

• For family businesses, open and honest conversations about succession planning are essential. If your children aren’t interested in taking over, develop a Plan B early.

• A trade sale to a third party often yields the highest valuation, but it requires proving that the business can thrive without you. Management buyouts offer continuity but typically at a lower valuation.

For businesses with 10-100 employees, succession planning isn’t merely an exit strategy
it’s a business optimisation process

• Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs) offer tax advantages while preserving company culture and rewarding the team that helped build the business. This option may be attractive if maintaining your legacy is a priority.

• Some owners prefer a passive income model, retaining ownership while stepping back from operations. This requires robust systems and a trustworthy leadership team.

BUSINESS VALUATION AND THE LEGALITIES

Understanding valuation methods specific to your industry is crucial. Businesses often go wrong in several areas: overreliance on emotional rather than marketbased valuation, failing to clean up their balance sheet prior to valuation and not adequately addressing business risks. Many owners neglect to demonstrate consistent year-on-year profit growth and fail to properly document their shareholder agreements, contracts, intellectual property and processes – all factors that significantly impact valuation multiples.

IMPLEMENTATION ROADMAP

My coaching approach utilises 90-day planning cycles to facilitate systematic progress toward long-term goals. This works exceptionally well for succession planning. Break down the overwhelming 3 to 5-year timeline into manageable quarterly objectives across all business areas.

Focus on developing your leadership team through strategic delegation and upskilling. Establish clear milestones for reducing your operational involvement while maintaining growth momentum. Remember to integrate personal goals with

business objectives – why build a successful exit only to sacrifice your health and relationships along the way?

THE VALUE OF EXTERNAL SUPPORT

Transforming a founderdependent business into a valuable asset ready for succession is challenging work. Many business owners benefit from external support – whether through business coaching, peer networks, or specialist advisors. The right advisor brings both objectivity and accountability to the process, keeping you focused on long-term succession. Consider investing in both your personal development as a leader who can gradually let go, as well as your team’s capabilities to take on greater responsibility.

ACHIEVE THE SUCCESS YOU DESERVE

Start your succession planning today, even if the exit seems distant. Creating a business that operates independently of you maximises exit value while reducing stress and creating opportunities for your team. The most valuable companies thrive long after their founders move on. A business coach can provide the framework, accountability and perspective needed to complete this complex journey, helping you avoid common pitfalls while accelerating your progress toward a successful exit that rewards your years of hard work.

Legal InsuranceExpenses

– If You’ve Got It, Use it!

Here, Michael Bickers, Account Manager at specialist insurance firm Brown & Brown, takes a closer look at the subject of Legal Expenses Insurance

and how important it is for businesses to have and utilise this important form of cover

When a fire or break-in occurs, one of the first thoughts will probably be about insurance, but the chances are that will not be the case at the start of a complaint or disagreement that has the potential to escalate to a full-blown legal dispute. Insurance is more likely to come to mind when a dispute is well down the legal path or even after a court case has been lost, but if you have Legal Expenses cover (and you may not be aware you have) it should be an early consideration.

Commercial Legal Expenses insurance can be very valuable when disputes occur, however, to ensure you receive the benefit, you need to be aware of (and obviously comply) with the policy conditions relating to claims notification. These generally require taking legal advice from the insurer’s helpline (some insurers let you use your own solicitors), at an early stage once a problem emerges and certainly before costs are incurred. With Employment cover, it may be a requirement to take advice before you start any dismissal, redundancy or disciplinary action.

I have mentioned above that not all policyholders are aware that they have Legal Expenses cover and that tends to be when it is included as part of a Combined or Package insurance policy or the cover is purchased relatively cheaply as an ‘Add-On’. Its existence can then be quickly forgotten once the insurance cover is sorted for the year. The extent of cover can vary considerably

depending on the price paid with the best policies providing cover across a range of business areas. These will include employment, property/tenancy disputes, tax investigations, criminal defence and regulatory compliance, but I will concentrate on contract disputes cover as it can be important for contractors. The first point is to make sure you have both defence and pursuit cover with the latter including debt collection and also be aware that some insurers restrict cover for construction contracts to where there is a formal written contract in place with your customer.

To fully appreciate the cover it is useful to look at a few examples. We often have incidents reported involving an allegation of defective work that start off as potential claims under Public Liability, Contract Works or Professional Indemnity. Many are straightforward, for example, a contractor has been negligent causing damage to their customer’s property and the insurers pay up for the customer’s property (but not the cost of putting right the actual defective work) under the Public Liability insurance. Alternatively, if it is a defect in design a Professional Indemnity policy would cover the cost of putting the defect right.

However, claims can start to get more difficult if a defect in design or workmanship emerges during the installation. Contract Works insurance excludes rectifying the actual defect but generally covers other parts of the contract works that are not themselves

The extent of cover can vary considerably depending on the price paid with the best policies providing cover across a range of business areas. These will include employment, property/ tenancy disputes, tax investigations, criminal defence and regulatory compliance”

defective but damaged by the defective parts.

Establishing what is and isn’t covered under such circumstances can be complicated but can often be further complicated by other factors, including determining what has actually caused the damage. Also, our contractor may well dispute that they are at fault, possibly because other contractors have been involved during installation or post completion, or the customer has misused or failed to maintain the pool or equipment etc.

What you may have taken from the above is that insurance for rectifying the actual defective workmanship, as opposed to defective design, is not covered, (availability of any cover is generally very specialist and limited to very large construction projects). If you have done something wrong, it is obviously best to admit fault and put matters right, however if you do not feel you are at fault, legal expenses can help in at least defending your position and pursuing unpaid debts.

Legal Expenses Insurance is not a substitute for Public Liability or Professional Indemnity Insurance, as it will typically exclude claims that should be covered by those policies, such as those arising from a breach of professional duty of care. It is also important to note that Legal Expenses insurers will not support ‘lost causes’ with policies subject to a ‘reasonable prospect of success’ clause (over 50%) but they can be of assistance to compliment your main insurances especially in situations involving unreasonable customer dissatisfaction.

However, if you pay for Legal Expenses cover make sure you know what you are buying and what you must do when a potential claim emerges.

A Technical Guide To Public Swimming Pool Disinfection

In this latest issue, Chris Bateman, STA Pool Plant Tutor takes a look at the subject of disinfection within public swimming pool environments – why it’s important, primary and secondary options, monitoring and testing procedures, best practices and much more!

Effective disinfection is the foundation of safe and hygienic swimming pool operations. It protects bathers from harmful microorganisms, maintains water clarity, prevents biofilm buildup and safeguards pool infrastructure. For pool plant operators, understanding the science behind disinfection and applying best practices is essential for compliance with public health standards such as the PWTAG Code of Practice and for ensuring consistent, safe and efficient operation.

WHY DISINFECTION MATTERS

Swimming pool water is constantly contaminated by bathers through sweat, saliva, skin cells, body oils, cosmetics and at times, pathogens. Without effective disinfection, these contaminants can proliferate, compromising water quality and posing serious health risks. Bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, viruses like norovirus, parasites including Cryptosporidium and Giardia and fungi responsible for infections like athlete’s foot are all potential hazards. Disinfection must both neutralise pathogens rapidly and maintain a residual presence in the water to ensure ongoing protection.

PRIMARY DISINFECTION METHODS

Chlorination is the primary method used in UK pools thanks to its proven effectiveness, cost efficiency and ease of automation. Free chlorine – the active form responsible for killing pathogens – works through oxidation, while combined chlorine (chloramines), formed when chlorine reacts with nitrogenous waste, causes eye irritation and poor air quality. Total chlorine represents the sum of these two forms. Free chlorine should typically be maintained at 0.75 - 1.0 mg/L when pH is tightly controlled between 7.0 and 7.2. It should be increased to 2.0 - 2.5 mg/L when operating within a slightly broader pH range of 7.0 - 7.4 and to 3.0 - 5.0 mg/L in high-risk settings such as hydrotherapy pools, outdoor pools and children’s splash zones. For maximum chlorine efficiency, pH should remain between 7.0 and 7.2. Different chlorine dosing methods include sodium hypochlorite (commonly used in hard water areas), calcium hypochlorite (preferred in soft water regions), chlorine gas (highly effective but requiring strict handling and

PPE) and stabilised chlorine compounds for outdoor pools where UV degradation is an issue. Bromine, while more expensive and slower acting, is preferred for spas and warm-water pools due to its stability at higher temperatures and pH levels, though it is less suitable for large public pools.

Maintaining correct pH levels is critical to chlorine’s effectiveness. When pH rises above 7.8, chlorine’s disinfecting power drops sharply and the pool should not remain operational. pH is typically adjusted with acidic chemicals such as sodium bisulphate, hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, or carbon dioxide gas. If pH needs to be raised, sodium carbonate is used.

SECONDARY DISINFECTION

In addition to primary disinfection, many facilities employ secondary systems for enhanced safety. Ultraviolet (UV) light is highly effective against chlorine-resistant microorganisms such as Cryptosporidium and also helps reduce chloramines. However, UV must be installed after filtration and, because it leaves no residual disinfectant in the water, it must work alongside chlorine. Ozone, another powerful oxidiser found in high-end facilities and spas, is generated on site and quickly breaks down organic matter, but like UV it leaves no lasting protection and must be paired with a primary disinfectant.

MONITORING AND TESTING

Accurate water testing is both a legal requirement and essential for safety. Operators must monitor free and total chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, total

alkalinity, calcium hardness and, in outdoor pools using stabilised chlorine, cyanuric acid. Public pools should be tested at least three times daily, with manual dosing pools and spas requiring checks every two hours and more frequent testing needed during peak usage or after contamination incidents. Even with automated dosing, manual checks and calibration are critical.

OPERATIONAL BEST PRACTICE

Best practice for pool operation goes beyond chemical balance. Proper circulation and turnover are essential to ensure water passes through filtration and disinfection systems within the designed timeframe. Contamination should be prevented at source by encouraging pre-swim showers and good bather hygiene. Filters must be backwashed regularly - at least weekly - to prevent reintroducing contaminants and to maintain efficiency. Combined chlorine levels above 1.0 mg/L may indicate the need for shock dosing or dilution. Operators must also have clear response plans for incidents such as faecal accidents, vomit, or chemical imbalances, using STA contamination flow charts and PWTAG guidance as references.

TRAINING AND COMPETENCY

Disinfection systems are only as reliable as the people managing them. Comprehensive training, such as the STA Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations, equips operators with the knowledge to understand water chemistry, troubleshoot disinfection issues and maintain safety and compliance.

In conclusion, swimming pool disinfection is far more than adding chemicals - it is a complex, carefully balanced system involving chemistry, hydraulics and human behaviour. With the right technical knowledge and proactive management, operators can ensure swimming pools remain safe, clean and enjoyable for every user.

GMT AIM FOR SUPERIOR QUALITY AND SERVICE IN THE TILED SPA SECTOR

GMT Spas are proud to be recognised for their quality and service, which is evidenced by their established clients returning time and time again.

The company specialises in the manufacture of bespoke high-end tiled spas, swim spas and pools. With their in-house drawing office, they are able to collaborate with architects and designers and can even work with a sketch from the client to produce precise drawings and renders which help the end user to visualise the finished project.

GMT strongly recommend the use of joint point tiles as the whole surface area of the tile is in contact with the adhesive giving the ideal bond. In the past, issues with mesh

backed tiles have led to the company now testing them for suitability before use and advising clients about possible issues, but the ultimate decision to use them or not is made by the client.

Another benefit of a tiled spa is the longevity, at GMT they produce a fibreglass shell using marine grade resins and gelcoats, all of which are insulated and sitting on a stainless-steel cradle with adjustable swivel feet giving a sturdy base on which to tile.

Of huge benefit is the ability to have a large spa or pool made in sections which are then joined and tiled by their factory workmen on site giving the appearance of a one-piece pool, this is of particular benefit when the site has restricted access or indeed if the pool is too big to be transported in one piece.

GMT’s ethos remains constant – to supply a superior quality product and service to their ever-growing list of customers both in the UK and abroad. They are proud to be members of SPATA and an ISO registered company and offer a superior ten-year warranty on all their pools, spas and swim spas.

ASTRALPOOL UK – QUALITY SPAS THAT CAN BE RELIED ON

with durability. Each spa is uniquely crafted and customised, ensuring both aesthetic beauty and long-lasting quality. The skilled craftsmen at their manufacturing partner use the finest materials to build spas that meet the highest standards of innovation and excellence.

Only the finest marine quality products are used to construct the shells of AstralPool’s spas, alongside specifically chosen adhesive and grouts, as well as stainless steel cradles and legs for maximum stability. The choice of tiles is vast and highly personalised, ensuring that every spa is truly one-of-a-kind.

In addition to their range of standard spas, AstralPool UK offer bespoke options for clients with specific space or feature requirements. If installation access is restricted, AstralPool’s manufacturing partner can construct the spa in sections. These sections are seamlessly joined and sealed on site by their team, ensuring a flawless finish with no visible joints.

Dive into the future of fitness

with the Velocity Swim Jet by HeatForm.

Designed using the latest patented technology to provide the ultimate swimming experience for the modern athlete. HIDDEN

Whether you are training for gold or just want to chase your own bubbles, Velocity transforms any pool into a boundless swim zone. No flip turns, no limits – just pure aquatic adrenaline. Ready to make every swim session a personal best?

Jet, set, go with the Velocity counter current system.

Powering A Continuous Swimming Experience

When it comes to increasing the overall functionality of swimming pool spaces, especially within smaller pools, counter-current systems are perhaps one of the most effective add-ons for both new and existing installations. The technology has been a driving force behind swim spas and an increasing number of pools are now incorporating them. Here, we take a look at the brands that are providing the power behind these systems

There’s a number of reasons why a large swimming pool isn’t always a possibility or perhaps even a necessity. Normally it will be due to space issues or a budget that doesn’t allow for something bigger. Whatever the reason, sometimes a small pool is the only viable option, but whilst fun, they can frequently lack that certain something – and often, it’s the ability to provide users with an uninterrupted and a satisfying swimming experience.

The answer to this issue is a countercurrent system and they’re incorporation into and use within pools, particularly those of a smaller nature, is becoming much more widespread.

Of course, their use isn’t restricted to just pools of a smaller nature, but that is clearly where they’re best deployed and really come into their own.

Regardless of pool size, once installed, a counter-current system makes it possible for a user to swim for as long as they want, plus their introduction can often provide some additional hydrotherapy options too.

With built-in and over-the-wall options available, there are no excuses for not exercising fully in any pool or maximising the area’s potential – especially as there is now more choice than ever within the sector.

So, with their popularity on an upward trajectory, here, we take a closer look at some of the options and brands that are on the market.

THE BADU SWIM JET SYSTEM – NOW AVAILABLE THROUGH ASTRALPOOL UK

Engineered in Germany by SPECK Pumpen, BADU swim jet systems deliver a seamless, turn-free swimming experience and three of their premium models are now available in the UK through AstralPool. Thanks to advanced propellor technology, they create a smooth, splash-free flow that mimics the sensation of swimming in open water. The large propellor which draws water directly from the pool, eliminates the need for pumps and pipes and thus means a much simpler installation with no plumbing required. With

fully adjustable current settings, a BADU counter-current unit is ideal for everyone – from families and hobby swimmers to competitive athletes.

At the top of the range is the Turbo Pro with a pump flow rate of 150 − 350m3/h and flow velocity of 1.80 – 4.10m/s; next is the Turbo that has all the benefits of the former but in a smaller, more manageable package, with a pump flow of 125 - 245m3/h and flow velocity of 1.50 – 3.00m/s, whilst the Turbo Light features a pump flow of 90 − 200m3/h and flow velocity of 1.10 to 2.40m/s.

All BADU swim jets have a large antientrapment cover that on the Turbo Pro is made of durable marine grade 316 stainless steel. The units are driven by an efficient permanent magnet motor which allows for an extremely quiet operation. All panels have piezo buttons that can be used to control the power directly on the swim units, thus additional installation work is no longer necessary. The buttons light up in colour corresponding to the selected power, so users can identify the current setting out of the seven different power levels.

EVASTREAM MOVE – THE FIRST BATTERY OPERATED PLUG AND PLAY COUNTER-CURRENT

EVA has established itself as one of the market leaders in high-quality counter-current systems, driven by a dedication to quality and innovation in partnership with Golden Coast, part of Pollet Pool Group.

The EVAstream Move is the first batteryoperated, plug-and-play counter-current swimming machine, designed to transform existing pools into continuous swimming spaces. Its compact and portable design enables year-round swimming without the need for expensive renovations. This innovative device mimics the experience of a competition pool, allowing users to swim freely at home or on the go.

Unlike built-in models, the EVAstream Move is fully battery-powered and requires no technical modifications, making it incredibly user-friendly for any pool owner. It is ready for immediate use and can be operated by a single person. Powered by a rechargeable battery, it offers one to four hours of uninterrupted swimming, depending on the speed setting and fully recharges in just

four hours via a standard 230-Volt outlet.

Ideal for pools as small as 4 x 2.5 metres, the EVAstream Move generates a powerful current of up to 250m³/h. Its adjustable current caters to both beginners and experienced swimmers, ensuring a personalised swimming experience.

Users can control the EVAstream Move from within the pool using a water-resistant remote or through the EVA app, which features customisable swimming programmes for tailored training sessions.

CERTIKIN INVITE OWNERS TO ENJOY LIFE IN THE FASTLANE

Whether training to be an Olympic swimmer or simply swimming for the joy of it, Certikin have counter-current options to suit all levels of swimming needs.

The Fastlane Pro from Endless Pools sits at the top end of the Certikin range and is a product which effectively turns a swimming pool into a health club. Athletes love the adjustable speed swim current and, for those in training mode, it is also possible to add Fit@Home which lets the customer control their Fastlane Pro from any smart device, meaning that you can programme and repeat advanced, multispeed ‘interval’ workouts.

What sets this counter-current apart is that the turbulence-free water stream is wider than the swimmer’s body and deeper than any swim stroke, yet it is narrow enough not to impinge on other swimmers. Unlike jetted alternatives, the Fastlane generates a wide block of crystal clear, bubble-free and completely adjustable water flow, delivering a fast, smooth swim current up to a 1:14/100m pace (a necessity for any serious swimmer).

It’s suitable for almost any pool – free form or rectangular: gunite, vinyl or fibreglass; new construction or retrofit. The required minimum water depth is 0.9m. It’s particularly suitable for small swimming pools as it lets users swim for as long as they like without turning.

Certikin also supplies its own branded entry-level counter-current system – an affordable option designed for small private pools. It is equipped with a 3hp pump to create an adjustable counter-stream of water. The directional inlet allows a 15° inclination in any direction and also features an adjustable air/water mixer for a relaxing bubble massage effect.

FAIRLOCK’S SWIMEO TURBINE SYSTEMS – FOR SWIMMERS OF ALL ABILITIES

Available through Fairlocks Pool Products, SWIMEO is a range of counter-current swimming systems for everybody – from beginners to advanced swimmers.

Unlike counter-current swimming jet pumps that offer limited power and uncertain reliability, the SWIMEO turbine is fully submerged, quiet and reliable.

Manufactured in France by SIREM, these turbines are recommended for competitive

and amateur swimmers looking for a private swimming pool counter-current solution to complement their traditional pool or open water training. The maximum power of the SWIMEO is equivalent to a swimming speed of 1 min 50 seconds per 100m.

The products offer a fantastic flow power/ comfort ratio. The wide flow improves the body’s stability in the water and increases tolerance to lateral movements. With SWIMEO, the swimmer can move to either side of the flow without the risk of losing perceived power.

All the turbines in the SWIMEO range are controlled either by a wireless remote control or via the smartphone application, which can be used to create training programmes.

Within them, the intensity of the stream can be varied over time.

Currently available is the S1 model, which features a functional, modern design with 250m3/h and 400m3/h options. The positioning of the inlets and the shape of the hydrodynamic appendages have been designed to offer the best performance and price combination available.

The X400 is only suitable (and recommended) for new pool projects.

This model is built-in and supplied with an integration kit and a grid that allows the turbine to be perfectly hidden in the pool wall.

ENJOY INVERTER TECHNOLOGY WITH LIGHTHOUSE’S VELOCITY

The Velocity swim jet is the first of its kind to be designed and manufactured in the UK and was brought to market in 2022. Velocity is a hydraulically driven counter-current system that uses the latest in inverter drive technology and composite engineering. This innovative energy-efficient design keeps costs low whilst compromising nothing on power output. It boasts an impressive flow capacity of 1,000m3/h for the standard unit, which is the equivalent of 58 seconds for 100m,

For those in training mode, Fit@Home lets customers control their Fastlane Pro from any smart device

suitable for an elite swimmer.

Dan Phillips, Managing Director at Lighthouse, commented: “Since its launch we have continually upgraded and improved Velocity and we are confident, in terms of quality, performance and price that this is the best and most powerful jet on the market. We were proud to achieve the patent for its unique invertor drive system. This crowning accomplishment was due to our development team who collaborated with swim coaches and professional swimmers to refine the jet. We placed particular emphasis on noise reduction and optimising flow sensation. The collective process resulted in a current that is deep, broad and exceptionally smooth, closely resembling that of a natural river.”

Importantly, with ten customisable speed and intensity options, the jet caters for everyone – from competitive swimmers or triathletes looking for resistance training to leisure users desiring a gentle current for relaxation or low-impact exercise. Its versatility extends the functionality of a pool, making it a space for both rigorous workouts and serene aquatic therapy.

Designed with flexibility in mind, Velocity is easy to install and fits on almost any pool. It can also be set up behind a bespoke cover panel too. Hidden away, this option maximises the main swim area and has become increasingly popular with many customers preferring an unfussy and clean finish to the pool.

REGARDLESS OF BUDGET – BINDER AND OCEA HAVE A SOLUTION

Ocea UK are one of the UK leaders in the counter-current sector, with ranges suitable for all budgets, whether for family fun, recreational or professional swimming as well as the commercial sector. They have successfully represented Binder HydroStar and EasyStar on the UK market for over a decade and last year brought exciting new product features to the range too. Designed for new build pools, HydroStar is a flush, integrated housing option that encases the market’s only maintenance free

turbine to deliver a strong, even current for all swimming abilities. Users can operate the HydroStar using the new BOB optical illuminated in-pool switch – its LED lights allow the swimmer to see what level they are swimming at and it can be used in conjunction with the dedicated Training App, where bespoke training programmes can be created.

With Ocea UK’s latest addition to their Ocea-X range – the InverJet retrofit system –counter-current ownership is more obtainable than ever. Operating using Inverter technology and running on a low 12V, this discreet retrofit option is a cost-effective solution for pool owners. With easy installation over the edge of the pool, the InverJet can be installed to existing installations without any disturbance to the pool shell. Operated by remote or digital control pad, users can set the current to suit their own needs.

PUMP UP THE FLOW WITH PLASTICA’S COUNTER-CURRENT OPTIONS

Plastica’s SwimMaster™ counter-current unit

has been specifically chosen to complement their range of premium wooden pools, however it is not restricted to just them and is suitable for most conventional pool structures too. Its sleek, minimalist design means it can be situated perfectly into wooden pools but Plastica can also supply stainless steel extensions to allow simple installation into concrete structures. Coupled to a Nadorself 3hp jet pump, this unit is capable of flowing at up to 60m3/h.

The X-Stream Duo counter-current unit, made with a stainless-steel niche and grab rail, is Plastica’s new through-the-wall unit. DISCOVER THE SWIMSWIMMER FROM OASE SPORTIVE

Oase has over 50 years’ experience in the swimming pool sector and continue to be committed to innovation. This commitment has led to the introduction of Oase Sportive which focuses on ways to stay fit and healthy, using the swimming pool as a training partner. The collection consists of three options – SwimSwimmer, Swimrunner and Swimbiker – and as their names suggest, each offers a very different take on a poolbased activity.

With SwimSwimmer, the brand offers a counter-current unit for swimmers that provides a natural swimming experience and mimics a river current. Water is drawn and pushed towards the swimmer by the turbine that can deliver very powerful electric counter-current with flows from 410m³/h.

These Belgian-made units generate either a strong or gentle current and provides great benefits for both competitive and leisure swimmers.

Suitable for both new and existing swimming pools, the space-saving SwimSwimmer can be recessed into a swimming pool wall or surface-mounted. For new installations, the recessed countercurrent unit option can be sleekly fitted. Water moves through the grid in to the counter-current unit and the turbine then pushes the water towards the swimmer.

For existing swimming pools, the surfacemounted version of the unit is a smart choice. This counter-current unit is fixed to the swimming pool wall, enabling swimmers to get the maximum benefit of the countercurrent that is produced.

...they’re incorporation into and use within pools, particularly those of a smaller nature, is becoming much more widespread”

NO MATTER THE REQUIREMENT, SCP HAS A SOLUTION

SCP UK has established solutions from UWE, plus for 2026, will offer an iGarden option too.

With a wide portfolio of counter-current systems, there’s a UWE solution for an equally wide range of swimming needs and abilities. Sitting at the top of SCP’s range are the TriVA 75 and 150 counter-current systems.

Both have been designed with ambitious athletes in mind and thanks to its innovative FLAT technology, each TriVA version creates a flat, powerful flow just below the water’s surface – right at chest and shoulder height, exactly where an athlete needs resistance. Depending on the version, from 75 m3/h to 150 m3/h flow rates are available. To ensure an optimal flow channel, the WAVE safety filter inlet cover (included) should be installed directly opposite from TriVA.

Moving down the range, there’s the BAMBO which offers an infinitely variable flow rate of up to 65m3/h flow rate, plus an illuminated version in stainless steel.

Lastly for customers wanting high performance for minimum outlay, choices include the exclusive to SCP OVO system, plus the EUROJET and DUNA compact systems.

If a retrofit system is required, new for 2026 will be the Swim Jet M Series by SCP’s Partner iGarden. With its strength of R&D and production capacity in inverter motors and electric control systems, iGarden developed innovative InverTurbo technology which combines a full inverter controller, a

high-efficiency and low noise PMSM Motor a patented flow channel design, resulting in the iGarden Swim Jet. It not only offers the best efficiency and flow rate, but also provides adjustable speed options from 20% to 100% for an unparalleled swimming experience. With a touchscreen panel and ultra-slim body, this Plug & Play unit offers easy installation and is ready in just ten minutes!

An Effective Addition To Any Outdoor Pool

With the ability to provide year-round swimming and protection from the worst UK weather, pool enclosures also reduce maintenance and running costs for both commercial and domestic owners, plus they offer builtin safety too. There’s no doubt that an enclosure is a big investment, but having one means owners can maximise the full potential of their swimming pool. From large to small and to suit almost any size and shape of pool, we take a look at the options that are available to extend the use of UK pools

An outdoor swimming pool of any size is a investment of not only money, but also time and more often than not a sizeable one in each case, so not being able to enjoy its use year-round means a pool’s full potential isn’t being realised. And that’s where an enclosure comes in. Opting for an effective outdoor pool cover-up means that swimming and pool-based outdoor leisure time can not only continue way past the normal seasonal shut down, but it can often continue throughout the worst of the weather too, ensuring a pool’s full potential is realised. What’s more, after the initial enclosure investment, pool owners in the residential and commercial sectors can also look to achieve some cost savings – or at least minimise the rises due to high and potentially escalating energy and other running costs – plus save some time with regards to maintenance.

The benefits don’t stop there either. Enclosures provide additional safety too. They make it almost impossible for children or pets to access the pool area unattended, slips and falls can also be reduced by keeping the surrounding area free from ice and rain, plus the glazing in many enclosures protects swimmers from harmful UV rays.

So while enclosures are clearly an investment, often a substantial one, with so many benefits provided for pool owners through their installation, it’s easy to see why they are an increasingly popular choice.

There is a fantastic selection of fabulous enclosures that come in a wide range of shapes and sizes to suit a variety of needs, the majority of sites and the most discerning of customers too. So in this latest issue, we take a look at some of the enclosure solutions that are available for the UK’s outdoor pools.

ALBIXON – A DESIGN FEATURE PLUS SAFETY FOR ANY GARDEN

entire process from the selection of the most suitable model and size, to the purchase and installation of an enclosure. And with a number of products available, ALBIXON can satisfy a wide range of wishes. Choose from ultra-low enclosures to walking-height enclosures that are perfect for poolside relaxation. The company can also deliver the series enclosures in their ‘ALBIXON Box’ which minimises the transportation costs.

For a pool owner that is intrigued by discreet and sophisticated shapes, the CASABLANCA INFINITY is just the thing for them. This low enclosure, which makes a very discreet first impression in the garden, hides many secrets to attract everybody’s attention.

Its angular clear panel material, futuristic design and low Air rails are proof of this.

fun with friends by the swimming pool, play with their children in water, improve their fitness by swimming or just relax peacefully regardless of the weather outside. In short, any activity can be done with the MONACO FUTURE enclosure. Adding further to the enclosure’s appeal, its Air track can be walked on, is easy to sink into the ground and provides hidden anchoring elements. The rollers, with their stainless steel encapsulated bearings, slide easily. Hooks to prevent the lifting of modules are included.

AQUATELESCOPIC’S PREMIUM ENCLOSURES NOW AVALABLE IN THE UK

Based near Toulouse in southern France, Aquatelescopic has been offering its unique designs and attracting customers from Europe and right across the globe for almost 40 years and last year these enclosures became available in the UK. Its premium quality, luxury enclosures are manufactured using toughened safety glass, a type of glazing which gives unmatched levels of transparency that does not fade over time, as well as unparalleled strength and shatter resistance.

Aquatelescopic’s most renowned design feature is perhaps its lack of deck mounted rails or tracks, achieved by the incredibly highly engineered bearings and wheels in

contact with the pool surround, coupled with its patented guiding mechanism which ensures that each section of the building glides effortlessly into the next with no deflection. Not only does this make for a far more aesthetically pleasing installation, particularly when the building is opened up, but also presents less of a trip hazard, or hindrance to wheelchair users. Buildings can be either manually opened and closed, or, automatically at the press of a button by way of integrated solar powered motors.

The company’s in-house R&D department, equipped with state-of-the-art engineering facilities, designs its own aluminium profiles used in the construction of their buildings’ frames, which give optimum strength and resistance to twisting and deflection. The aluminium used is extremely high grade and also sourced in the south of France, meaning the quality can be controlled and guaranteed.

This allows the fabrication of buildings with incredibly high strength-to-weight ratios which can be made in spans up to an incredible 26m wide, making Aquatelescopic

the perfect choice for the commercial sector as well as domestic owners.

In-house developed software provides copious drawings with every quote, along with calculations for each building’s resistance to high winds and snow-loadings.

outdoor segment, and high-calibre scheduled activities all reflect the dynamism, innovation, and sustainability driving our industry,” said Ángel Celorrio, Director of Piscina Barcelona 2025.

This edition will spotlight outdoor and wellness spaces, reflecting one of the sector’s fastest-growing trends. A new central feature, the Outdoor & Wellness Experience, will occupy approximately 1,000 m² in Hall 1. INTERNATIONAL REACH

With more than 15,000 visitors expected –60% of whom are international, from up to 117 countries – the show will attract a broad professional audience: importers, distributors, retailers, architects, engineers, builders, installers, landscape designers, interior designers, and managers of sports centres, spas, hotels, campsites and waterparks.

The fair serves as a high-value business and networking platform, strategically linking Europe, the Mediterranean and Latin America. One example is the Hosted Buyers’ Programme, which will welcome around 1,000 purchasing decision-makers and specifiers from 26 key markets in addition to Spain, all linked to projects in aquatic facility and wellness centre design, construction and equipment.

swimming pool safety in commercial settings always the highest of priorities for operators, here we take a look at two guidance documents released this year which put the subject of ‘Automated Monitoring’ under the spotlight

Swimming pool technology continues to evolve with over 250 centres now utilising various technology systems to enhance safety and support in operational challenges. Guidance initially created in 2023 and updated in 2024 has been revised for 2025 with a relaunch to meet the industry’s needs.

The updated edition of ‘Swimming Pool Supervision Technology: Guidance for Automated Monitoring and Detection Systems’ was developed with the support of CIMSPA, RLSS UK, Swim England and ukactive.

The comprehensive guidance covers both lifeguarded and non-lifeguarded swimming pools, offering essential advice on the selection, installation, operation and training requirements associated with automated monitoring and detection systems, as well as outlining key performance and design criteria that pool operators should consider when selecting and managing these systems.

Jo Talbot, Commercial Director at RLSS UK said: “Swimming pool supervision technology is advancing all the time. The updated guidance helps operators adapt to new technologies, ensuring safer swimming environments for everyone. Embracing new technology can help improve safety outcomes while supporting operational challenges and efficiencies.”

The guidance was unveiled at an industry launch event hosted by GLL at The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Centre in Rugby, where pool operators, architects, safety professionals and key industry partners came together to learn about the updated guidance. Attendees had the opportunity watch live demonstrations and engage with the UK’s leading pool supervision technology suppliers - Lynxight, Poolview, AngelEye and Poséidon by Maytronics.

Speaking at the time of the launch, Alan Ritchie National Pools and Water Safety Manager, GLL, said: “With over 50 professionals from our industry attending the event we hope to continue to pull

together making pools safer for everyone. The demonstrations of GLL’s latest Lynxight system showcased the benefits of technology and our team’s positive attitude towards it. GLL continues to work with and develop technology to make our pools safer whilst ensuring staffing models are reflective of the swimmer need in the water.”

The working group will formally review the guidance every year in collaboration with CIMSPA, RLSS UK, Swim England, ukactive as well as independent swimming pool experts to ensure it reflects the latest technological advancements and industry best practice.

Tara Dillon, CEO, CIMSPA, said: “The work that RLSS UK has been driving with facilities operators to explore how technology can be effectively used to support our highly skilled lifeguard professionals, is to be congratulated. Through collaboration, this work is demonstrating how safety can be further enhanced through the deployment of technology to help lifeguards who use their expert training to ensure that the public can enjoy and benefit from aquatic activity.”

Richard Lamburn, Swim England’s Head of Facilities, said: “Swimming is the largest participation sport in the UK and it’s imperative that people can enjoy the water in the safest possible environment. Swimming pool supervision technology is advancing at great pace and the updated guidance for 2025 will assist operators to meet their needs. We look forward to continuing to work with RLSS UK, CIMSPA and ukactive

The updated guidance helps operators adapt to new technologies, ensuring safer swimming environments for everyone”

to evolve the guidance as the technology develops yet further.”

Paul Crane, Risk & Standards Manager at ukactive, the UK’s trade body for the physical activity sector, said: “ukactive and representatives from our Standards & Legislation committee have collaborated closely with RLSS UK and its partners to develop this guidance that supports our members and their staff to ensure high levels of safety in the nation’s swimming pools. This guidance reflects the advancements in digital technology that are taking place across the physical activity sector and supports operators to utilise these properly to further improve safety measures for customers using their swimming pools and facilities.”

NON-LIFEGUARDED SWIMMING POOLS

Following the launch of the updated guidance, a major milestone in swimming pool safety was reached with the launch of ‘Guidance for Managing Safety in NonLifeguarded Swimming Pools’ in June. Also developed by RLSS UK, CIMSPA, Swim England, and ukactive, this latest guidance supports operators in managing risk and improving safety standards in facilities without lifeguards.

With the number of non-lifeguarded pools increasing – and with technology playing a growing role in poolside supervision – this guidance couldn’t be more timely.

The guidance offers practical, evidencebased recommendations tailored to today’s operational realities. One key recommendation is the use of ‘Automated Monitoring and Detection Systems’, which can dramatically improve response times and add an essential layer of protection.

The guidance document states “Operators of non-lifeguarded pools should consider implementing an Automated Monitoring and Detection system to increase the speed by which persons in danger are detected and provide an additional layer of protection”.

Both of the guidance documents can be found online and downloaded free of charge from the RLSS website.
