This is no ordinary pool cover, it has huge advantages over traditional PVC slatted covers in terms of insulation properties with average thermal conductivity of= 0.0821 W/(mK) or a u value of 4.85.

The profile structures are made from expanded PVC-foam, coextruded with polyurethane. The profile exterior is high density PVC, which gives a perfectly smooth surface to prevent any algae formation either above or below the water level.

Available in five colours, Covrex® covers comply with the French safety standard NF P 90308 Version 2006, probably the strictest standard in the market.

They provide excellent resistance to weather and UV which makes them suitable for use all year round and come with an amazing standard 5 year warranty.

Covrex® is the future; so get ahead of your competitors before it’s too late!

What a difference a 12 months makes! At this stage last year, it was a case of “what summer?”, whereas this year it’s been the complete opposite… arguably too much summer if there is such a thing! Certainly too much when it comes to a lack of rain, but beyond that (and the obvious issues it brings), we couldn't have wanted for better weather for our industry. It’s just such a shame that for a number of reasons – which let’s be honest, are mainly financial/economy related – it sadly hasn’t been the stellar season it could have been. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been far from bad, but just not as good as it could have been, especially when compared to the warmer seasons gone by.

For those lucky enough to own a wet leisure product, or for those who operate them, the weather has ensured more use of pools, spas, and more over recent months. So water-based hygiene has very much been at the forefront of people’s minds. Somewhat handily, inside, we take a look at some of the current solutions that are keeping the water clean whilst minimising or eliminating chlorine use completely. In addition to this, we also take our annual look at just some of the laboursaving products that are making the task of testing water in pools and spas a more simple, quick and accurate task. Still on the subject of clean and safe water, well, more so clean and safe environments actually, we’ve a piece where STA Pool Plant Tutor Chris Bateman delves into the science of biofilms – how they develop in aquatic facilities, the risks they

pose to bathers, and the best strategies for prevention and control.

Dehumidification is also featured as we take a closer look at some of the environmental solutions that are able to provide a breath of fresh air to indoor pool and spa spaces. The appeal of stainless steel is also focused on again as we look at pools, spas and a number of accessories that are utilising the benefits of this timeless and elegant material that offers flexibility in its use along with long term durability too. Talking of flexibility, moving floors also makes a return this issue. Whilst clearly somewhat of an investment, these cleverly engineered products offer some fantastic benefits, particularly when it comes to freeing up space for alternative uses in both domestic and commercial settings. Completing our main features, swim spas are also covered as we take a look at a handful of models that are currently available for both families and more serious swimmers.

Inside, you’ll also find a showcase of a project that features a number of Waterco products, plus we taker a closer look at an exciting new partnership that is bringing Sterck one-piece pools to the UK.

If that wasn’t enough, we also give space to a joint statement made by a coalition of partners aiming to ensure that grassroots funding announced in the Spending Review reaches our pools.

As ever, there’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA along with all the British entries shortlisted for the 2025 European Pool & Spa Awards hosted by EUSA. The winners will be announced later this year at the Piscina Barcelona exhibition in Spain.

Finally, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and from further afield.

So, with a broad mix of subjects covered in this latest issue of SPN, hopefully we’ve provided a bit of something for everyone and I hope you find some time to enjoy it.

Planning Submitted For New Scottish Leisure Centre

Holmes Miller has submitted a planning application for a newbuild leisure centre in Larkhall, South Lanarkshire – a highly sustainable, community-focused facility designed to replace the existing centre with a modern, low-energy alternative.

The project is being delivered on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council, in collaboration with BAM Construction and hub South West. It will provide a long-overdue upgrade to the town’s current leisure provision, which no longer meets the needs of the growing population.

The proposed new centre will include a swimming pool, gym, flexible studios, community rooms and a bright, welcoming break space at its heart – all designed with accessibility, daylight and sustainability in mind.

A key feature of the project is its strong environmental performance. The building will be delivered using a Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) structure and designed to meet Passivhaus principles – significantly reducing both operational and embodied carbon. These measures support the council’s wider ambitions for delivering efficient, future-proofed public buildings.

Yida Zhou, Project Architect at Holmes Miller, said: “This building is designed to be simple, calm and intuitive – a healthy environment that supports both active lifestyles and community wellbeing. The use of timber and high-performance building fabric reflects our commitment to delivering climate-conscious civic architecture.”

Craig Heap, Project Director, added: “We’re proud to be working closely with South Lanarkshire Council, BAM and hub South West on this important community facility. The strength of the design reflects the shared ambition across the team to create a low-carbon, accessible building that will serve Larkhall for generations to come.”

Subject to planning approval, construction is anticipated to commence in summer 2026.

Recotherm Launch New Website

To celebrate their 40th anniversary, Recotherm have launched a new website and video which showcases their innovation, extensive industry knowledge and commitment to sustainability.

Clearly signposted market and location specific pages and FAQs make it easy to find relevant information, what’s more, the new website boasts an impressive client list, helpful case studies and informative articles to aid the sales process.

The Recotherm team have also invested in a lifestyle video to help end customers understand the unique environment that their units provide.

Commercial Director, Melanie Killen, stated: “Our units are large grey boxes, and without actually stepping into a pool hall that’s serviced by one of our units it’s difficult to explain the benefits they deliver.”

For pool contractors, this provides an excellent sales tool, helping them sell the intangible benefits to their customers.

Despite the level of detail included in the website, the Recotherm team are keen to point out that they’d always encourage contractors get in touch to discuss queries or challenges when specifying an AHU.

Technical Manager, Mark Mellings, is particularly keen on solving complex ventilation issues with bespoke programming, providing customers with the flexibility they require and optimising the energy-efficiency of the units. He said: “Our customers range from domestic pools with bi-fold doors, rising floors and pool covers to large commercial projects which can require very specific programmes to deal with spectator areas and peak usage times which require the unit to match pool activity levels.”

The new website and video build on the brand refresh that took place in the last half of 2024 and firmly positions them as one of the go-to suppliers of air handling units to the M&E and pool contractor markets.

Sustainable Mapei System Used At

World-leading Leisure Centre

A Mapei tiling system has been used to complete a surface installation project at Spelthorne’s Eclipse Leisure Centre – one of the world’s most advanced energyefficient leisure centres. The installation, carried out by Global Ceramic Tiling for Willmott Dixon, spanned the swimming pool, wellness areas and changing rooms. It features a variety of porcelain tiles, along with Mapei EMICODE: EC1 Plus certified sustainable formulations and products from Mapei Zero line, with CO2 emissions fully offset in the entire life cycle.

Designed by GT3 Architects and constructed by Willmott Dixon, the Eclipse Leisure Centre seeks to be one of the UK's largest wet and dry leisure centres to achieve Passivhaus, and the first in London. Facilities include a low-chemical 25m main pool, learner pool and splash pad, spa and sports facilities. The club spans over 100,000ft2 and aims to consume up to

60% less energy compared with a standard new building.

The tile installation included swimming pool surrounds, wellness areas and wet and dry changing areas and featured 300 x 300mm and 300 x 600mm porcelain tiles, supplied by Spec Tile. During the installation, surfaces were prepared by Advance Screeding. Mapei Topcem – a special fast drying hydraulic screed binder –was applied to form a complex set of falls within the changing rooms and to level common areas to a super flat SR1 surface regularity. Mapelastic AquaDefense readyto-use rapid-drying liquid membrane was applied to waterproof damp areas throughout the complex.

All tiles were installed with Mapei Keraquick S1 quick-setting, deformable adhesive and fixed with Ultracolor Plus antiefflorescence, quick-setting and drying polymer-modified grout, which feature water-repellent DropEffect® and mouldresistant BioBlock® technology. Both products have since become part of Mapei’s Zero Line. Mapei Topcem, along with Keraquick S1 and Ultracolor Plus, also benefit from EMICODE: EC1 Plus formulations.

Industry Loses Another Personality With Passing Of John Crossman

SPN were saddened to learn of the recent death of Aquaflex Chairman John Crossman who had been fighting a long-standing illness which he had faced with remarkable courage for many years. His strength, kindness and leadership will always be remembered at Aquaflex and by those who knew him.

John was a founder Director of the Wiltshire-based company, along with Neil Dalziel and Terry Wickham. Born in 1951, he went to school in Frome, Somerset, then started work in the sales department at Wallington Weston (which later became Weston Vinyls) who at one point were the only manufacturers of vinyl liner raw materials in the UK. He then gained more invaluable

experience working at Allen Plastics, before creating Aquaflex with Neil and Terry.

Married to Debbie, John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and in his spare leisure time, his main hobby was motorcycling. John’s funeral will take place at Salisbury Crematorium on Monday 1 September and anyone wishing to make a donation to his nominated charities (PSP Association and Salisbury Hospice) can do so via Chris White Funeral Directors.

Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time and John will be deeply missed by all who knew him, staff at Aquaflex and numerous others across the wider wet leisure community.

The All New Certikin Inverter Pool Pump –

Smarter, Quieter, Greener

The pool pump is the heart of the swimming pool and for decades people have been using single-speed pumps, which have high energy consumption and generate significant noise. InverSilence technology has been developed to address these problems and it is this intelligent technology which features in the new Certikin Inverter Pool Pump.

Features include:

• Ultra-efficient inverter technology: Unlike traditional singlespeed pumps, the Certikin Inverter Pool Pump with its InverSilence technology automatically adjusts its speed to meet demand – using up to 90% less energy. That means lower running costs and a greener pool all year round. While many inverter pumps use IE3 motors, Certikin’s IE4 motor offers superior energy efficiency for even greater peace of mind.

• Quiet, even at full power: Thanks to its precision engineering and variable-speed operation, the pump runs at 36dB, a 40% reduction on traditional on/off single speed pumps.

• Consistent flow, maximum performance: Whether it’s filtration or backwashing, the inverter technology provides consistent water flow, adapting intelligently for optimal performance and longevity of the entire pool system.

• Easy to use, built to last: With a user-friendly digital interface and rugged, corrosion-resistant components, the Certikin Inverter Pump is built for hassle-free operation and years of reliable use –even in tough pool environments.

• Eco-friendly and future-ready: Ideal for eco-conscious pool owners, this pump significantly reduces a carbon footprint whilst meeting the latest energy-efficiency regulations.

Engineered for performance, designed for sustainability, and built to last – this gamechanging pump redefines what’s possible in pool circulation: powerful performance with whisper-quiet operation and unmatched energy savings, all in one sleek, robust unit.

New For 2025 – Exclusive AquaX Models From SCP

SCP UK introduced four new and exclusive Fairland AquaX heat pump models earlier this year – the Cool and Heat AquaX Essential, the AquaX 20 Reversible and AquaX Turbo Silence Vertical –all of which are suitable for domestic projects and available in a range of sizes – plus the AquaX Jumbo for commercial pools, which comes in two sizes.

Concentrating on the domestic models, all three incorporate a ‘Cool & Heat’ function and offer 4-season functionality (request sizing for all year use), with the AquaX 20 Reversible model operating from temperatures as low as -20°C. This model also achieves COP 20 – a new industry standard for energy efficiency – with 1 kW consumed becoming up to 20 kW maximum in the pool.

All are extremely quiet in their operation, with the AquaX 20 Reversible and AquaX Turbo Silence Vertical models featuring TurboSilence inverter technology which is an optimised version of Fairland’s original Fullinverter technology.

This perfectly balances the inverter / compressor / control and heat exchanging technology, which creates the turbo

performance and silent operation at the same time.

By incorporating data research and historical analysis of the variable operation conditions of 4-season swimming from the early stage of R&D, TurboSilence inverter technology achieves precise power adjustment and output.

For ease of operation, each model includes a digital control panel plus there’s built in Wi-Fi which ensures simple remote control via an app.

For peace of mind, warranties are long, but vary depending on the model and element – they range from 3 years parts on the AquaX Vertical model up to 15 on both the heat exchanger and compressor on the AquaX 20 Reversible.

UNIDRIVE 505 – Constant Welding Performance And Quality

The new UNIDRIVE 505 from Leister is ideal for swimming pool builders who want to achieve almost invisible butt weld seams, even when using increasingly popular and durable 2mm reinforced, embossed, textured or digitally printed membranes.

Butt welding is employed on pool floors to enhance the visual appeal of the finish, resulting in a smooth, easy-to-clean surface with nearly invisible weld seams.

Traditional hand butt welding requires a high level of skill and is often a labourintensive process, which can lead to issues like smeared prints and open joint edges that trap dirt and bacteria. The new UNIDRIVE 505 is the solution to these problems.

The product features an innovative Tshaped hot air nozzle that swivels in,

allowing for a 3-in-1 simultaneous welding process. This design effectively welds under and between membranes, producing a nearly invisible seam and a smooth, even surface. It offers precise device guidance thanks to a clearly visible field of vision and the capability to weld with a constant pressure on one of the two defined handles at the rear. This makes it quicker and more consistent than traditional hand butt welding. Additionally, the 505 is designed for ease of use featuring straightforward user instructions and operation via its display, thereby eliminating the necessity for highly skilled and qualified welders.

FIRM HITS MILESTONE ACQUISITION

SPS PoolCare, a leading swimming pool services business formed in 2021, has announced its 150th acquisition.

Headquartered in Austin, Texas, SPS PoolCare provides residential pool services to tens of thousands of customers across Texas, Florida, Arizona and Nevada.

Coinciding with the news, the company also announced the promotion of Lance Martin to CEO. Martin held the role of President and Chief Operating Officer since joining and will retain the responsibilities of COO in his new role.

Built To Last: Why Quality Still Wins In The Pool Market

In May, members of the Aqua Technics Pools UK team travelled to Perth, Western Australia to visit the cutting-edge manufacturing facility at Aqua Technics’ global headquarters.

Since its introduction to the UK in 2021, the brand has garnered strong and growing interest from both trade and consumers alike. But witnessing the production process firsthand brought a whole new level of understanding and appreciation for what sets these pools apart.

Hosted by Darren Godden, General Manager at Aqua Technics Pools Australia, the team was given exclusive access to the company’s fully integrated facility. Every step of production – from concept, design, and mould fabrication; through to lamination and application of the patented Pool ColourGuard® finish – is completed under one roof. There is no outsourcing and no compromises. The company even employs its own industrial chemists who batch manufacture their own raw materials daily to guarantee quality and consistency.

The company’s commitment to R&D is another key differentiator. The pools feature Aqua Technics’ unique Graphene Nano-tech composite core reinforcement, high-performance gelcoats, and advanced colour retention technologies – designed to withstand everything from intense UV in sunnier climes, to prolonged freezing winters. The result is a product that’s not only visually striking, but engineered for longevity, peerless strength and durability, and the lowest lifetime cost of ownership to the consumer.

For the UK team, the visit was more than just a factory tour – it was a deep dive into the engineering, innovation, and craftsmanship that

define Aqua Technics Pools and a powerful reaffirmation of the product’s integrity and the brand’s vision.

As part of their long-term strategy, Aqua Technics Pools UK are now busy exploring opportunities to take selected UK dealers to Australia, giving them the chance to see the process firsthand.

Ezarri Features At Luxury Oasis On The Côte d’Azur

In the heart of the exclusive French Riviera, where the Mediterranean Sea merges with the sky, a modern and luminous white house shelters a private garden that seems straight out of a dream. Among palm trees swaying gently in the breeze, stands out an elegant rectangular pool, clad with Ezarri´s Bali Stone glass mosaic from the Zen collection - a material that combines beauty, functionality and durability.

The Bali Stone mosaic, with its matte marbled effect, adds a touch of sophistication and serenity to the pool design. Specially designed for aquatic spaces like pools, spas and saunas, this mosaic is not only resistant to water and thermal changes, but also offers an anti-slip texture on the integrated steps at one of its short ends, ensuring safety without sacrificing aesthetics.

Its greenish tones – inspired by Mediterranean nature itself – create a play of light and reflections underwater, enhancing the feeling of depth and purity.

The pool, integrated into a lush green environment, becomes the centerpiece of this project. The steps clad with Bali Stone not only provide easy access but also deliver a premium finish, thanks to the availability of special pieces – Corner and Cove – for edges and transitions.

The house, with its white minimalist architecture, contrasts beautifully with the mosaic´s natural tones, creating a perfect balance between modernity and warmth.

The southern French light caresses the water, highlighting the marblelike effect of the cladding and transforming the pool into a mirror of the sky.

Lakeside Thermal Bathing Spa Set To Debut In Canada

BASIN Glacial Waters, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise's highly anticipated thermal bathing destination, is to officially open in September. The debut of the world class, indoor-outdoor facility is set to revolutionise wellness in the Canadian Rockies with its contemporary interpretation of a traditional bathhouse – embedded within the landscape of Banff National Park's high alpine setting.

A concept two decades in the making and realised by acclaimed architect and designer Matteo Thun, BASIN Glacial Waters is inspired by the healing benefits of natural springs, thermal waters, and long-established wellness practices of Nordic sauna culture, yet reimagined through a luxury lens. Resting at an elevation of 1600m (5,200ft) with an uninterrupted vista of Canada's iconic Lake Louise and the impressive Victoria Glacier – the facility's mineral-rich, natural water source – BASIN is presented in minimalistic grandeur, with organic textures and a strong sensibility towards conscious sourcing and sustainability.

Elements of water – from crushed ice to steam mists – are the basis; an invite to immerse into self-guided circuits flowing between varying heat and humidity states of the traditional Finnish and bio saunas, Aufguss sauna, steam rooms, hot stone massage room, and silent salt relax room – with its gently warm glow from the Himalayan salt wall naturally ionizing the air. In addition, a series of diverse temperature pools, including a reflexology pool, infinity pool spanning onto the outdoor terrace and Kneipp walk, for standing contrast bathing. Two wet treatment rooms further enhance the thermotherapy cycle, one of which being modelled on a traditional Hammam for full-body exfoliation.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that both SPATA and BISHTA have decided to update their branding, which includes the logos for each trade association.

The debate at SPATA’s National Council and BISHTA’s Committee has been excellent (as usual) about what is required, and the result is that the final touches are being made to ensure that both logos will be ready to be revealed at the annual conference on 15 October. The logo change will reflect a modern ‘feel’ but will retain the authority expected of a trusted trade association.

The new branding will also be reflected on the new websites, which are under development and expected to be ready for launch at SPATEX 2026. We extend our thanks to Adtrak for the excellent work undertaken so far, and we look forward to further progress as we head towards Coventry!

Talking of Coventry, Michele, Helen and the rest of the team are really excited to be organising the 30th anniversary of SPATEX in 2026, and they will have lots of news to announce over the coming months. The show will have even more floor space to ensure that the extra demand can be met.

The BISHTA and SPATA stand will be moving diagonally opposite its traditional location, so we look forward to seeing you next to Arena 2.

The latest update from the EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) subgroup is that they

Members will be updated in the weekly e-newsletters about the venue and speakers. We look forward to seeing you in the autumn!

Moving on to the subject of staff, we have been so lucky with the team that works so tirelessly on behalf of BISHTA and SPATA members, and it has just been strengthened by the arrival of Fay Richardson.

Fay is bringing a wealth of experience to her role as Membership Co-ordinator at the BSPF, and with Jenna Patterson also stepping into the position, this marks an exciting time for the organisation.

The existing team in Andover also includes Claire Maguire, who has added the Office Manager role to her Business Development job description; Sallie Leslie-Golding is the PR & Marketing Manager (pulling all the strings to ensure that our industry knows what is going on and can make an impact with domestic and commercial end users); and Debbie Thornton is not only providing the all-important bookkeeping and accounts support, to make sure the finances are in good shape, but she is helping review many services where we may be able to get even better value for money.

Please note that there will be more news on the SPATEX team and an additional person in the next issue of SPN!

We are fortunate to have such an incredible team working to support the industry. Thank you to you all!

Cybersecurity In The Wet Leisure Sector

In this latest issue, Nick Elwell from specialist insurer BGi.uk looks at the subject of cybersecurity, and why awareness and training matter more than ever for businesses operating in the wet leisure sector and beyond

In today’s increasingly digital world, businesses in the wet leisure sector, whether involved in design, installation, maintenance, equipment supply, or education, are more reliant than ever on technology. From collecting and sharing client data to processing online orders and payments, digital tools are deeply embedded in daily operations. Even routine tasks, such as sending emails or managing customer communications, involve handling sensitive information.

However, this reliance comes with risks. Cyber threats such as phishing scams, whaling, and ransomware attacks are no longer confined to large corporations. Small businesses, sole traders, and self-employed professionals are increasingly vulnerable to data breaches that can cause irreparable damage. The wet leisure sector is not immune, and the need for robust cybersecurity measures has never been more urgent.

Recognising the growing threat, BGi.uk – a specialist insurer in the pool and spa industry – has taken proactive steps to support businesses beyond traditional insurance. Through its sister company, Gambryce.io, BGi.uk offers accessible and practical cyber training tailored specifically for small businesses and operators in the wet leisure sector.

This training is delivered through short, low-cost video modules designed to build and reinforce basic cyber awareness. The content is suitable for all team members, regardless of their technical expertise, making it an ideal solution for businesses of all sizes.

SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) have also stepped up, actively supporting this initiative and encouraging their members to take cyber risks seriously. Their involvement underscores a shared commitment to helping businesses stay secure and resilient in an increasingly digital environment.

WHY CYBERSECURITY TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL

Cybersecurity is not just a technical issue; it’s a human one. Most data breaches begin with simple human errors: clicking on a malicious link, using weak passwords, or failing to recognise a scam. Training empowers staff to

become a ‘human firewall’, capable of identifying and stopping threats before they escalate.

Even sole traders and small partnerships are targets. If someone uses a smartphone, laptop, or email for work, they’re exposed to cyber risks. Moreover, regulatory compliance is critical. Laws like GDPR require businesses to protect customer data, and failing to do so can result in serious consequences. Cyber training helps teams understand their responsibilities and stay compliant.

Trust is also a key factor. Customers want assurance that their data is safe.

Demonstrating that your team is trained in cyber awareness builds credibility and strengthens client relationships. Importantly, the cost of training is minimal compared to the potential financial and reputational damage that can result from a cyberattack.

WHAT GAMBRYCE TRAINING OFFERS

The Gambryce training programme consists of bite-sized video sessions that are easy to follow and free of technical jargon. These modules are designed to raise awareness and provide practical steps that staff can implement on a daily basis. Topics include:

• Spotting fake emails and scams

• Handling customer data securely

• Responding effectively to cyber incidents

• Building safe digital habits.

The training is designed to be part of an ongoing learning process, not just a one-time

exercise, helping businesses maintain a robust cybersecurity posture over time.

By working with BGi.uk and Gambryce, SPATA and BISHTA are helping members future-proof their businesses against digital threats. They are actively promoting practical tools and training, making it easier for members to access affordable, sector-relevant solutions. Membership in these associations means being part of a community that values high standards, not only in pools and spas but also in business resilience and digital safety.

FINAL THOUGHT: SECURITY IS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

Cybersecurity isn’t just the responsibility of an IT person – if businesses have one. Everyone in a business plays a role in protecting data, customers, and reputations. Taking a few minutes to build cyber awareness today could save hours of stress and significant financial loss tomorrow.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, so must the defences against them. Investing in training is not just about avoiding risk; it’s about empowering teams, protecting clients, and securing the future of businesses.

If you're interested in accessing the Gambryce cyber awareness training, reach out to SPATA, BISHTA, or BGi.uk for more information. Protect your business and stay ahead in today’s digital world.

The Science Of Biofilms –Managing The Microbial Risk

In this issue, STA Pool Plant Tutor Chris Bateman delves into the science of biofilms – examining how they develop in aquatic facilities, the risks they pose to bathers, and the best strategies for prevention and control

Swimming pools and spas may look clean, crystal clear, and chemically balanced – but they can still harbour a hidden biological threat: biofilms. These highly organised microbial communities form on submerged surfaces and represent one of the most persistent and technically challenging risks in aquatic facility management.

Far more than a thin layer of ‘slime’, biofilms are living ecosystems. They’re composed of bacteria and other microorganisms encased in a self-produced matrix called EPS (extracellular polymeric substance), made up of sugars, proteins, lipids, and DNA. This dense, protective structure shields microorganisms from disinfectants like chlorine and bromine, as well as from mechanical cleaning.

As a result, biofilms can become reservoirs for dangerous pathogens – Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Legionella pneumophila and Cryptosporidium among them – posing serious health risks to swimmers, especially children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.

HOW BIOFILMS FORM

Despite their complexity, biofilm formation can begin under surprisingly simple conditions: a moist surface, the presence of microorganisms and an environment that allows microbial survival. From there, a sophisticated biological process unfolds:

• Attachment – Free-floating (planktonic) bacteria adhere to a surface, often attracted by tiny surface charges or organic debris.

• Colonisation – Bacteria begin producing EPS, anchoring themselves more securely.

• Growth And Communication – Through quorum sensing (chemical signalling), bacteria coordinate their behaviour and rapidly build a mature, structured biofilm.

• Dispersion – Portions of the biofilm break off and spread, allowing new colonies to establish throughout the system.

Biofilms can form on virtually any surface –

PVC pipework, stainless steel fittings, tiles, pool covers, and especially sand filters, which contain hidden crevices perfect for microbial growth, often overlooked in routine checks, can become biofilm hotspots.

Flow dynamics also play a role. Wellcirculated areas may resist early attachment, but ‘dead zones’ – corners, seams and areas of low flow – encourage microbial settlement. In filters, even backwashing may not fully remove embedded biofilms, allowing bacteria to persist and repopulate the system.

THE WARNING SIGNS

The signs of biofilms often go unnoticed until they become more obvious. Water may appear cloudy despite correct chemical readings, or there may be a strong ‘chlorine’ smell caused by chloramines – a by-product of chlorine reacting with organic material. Musty odours around plant rooms or balance tanks, fluctuating chlorine levels, and reduced sanitiser efficiency are further warning signs. In more advanced cases, slimy textures on pool surfaces or visible growths on fittings confirm that biofilms are firmly established.

A pool may appear compliant on paper but still harbour infection risks if biofilms are present. The protective matrix allows pathogens like Legionella to survive even in water with acceptable chlorine levels. This is why the detection and breakdown of biofilms – not just chemical treatment – is crucial.

HEALTH AND OPERATIONAL RISKS

The consequences of biofilms are significant. They don’t just protect nuisance organisms –they create safe havens for serious pathogens. Infections linked to biofilm-protected bacteria include hot tub rash (folliculitis) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Legionnaires’ disease, a severe respiratory illness caused by Legionella pneumophila; gastrointestinal infections from organisms like E. coli or Cryptosporidium; and swimmer’s ear and other ear, eye and skin infections.

From an operational standpoint, biofilms increase chemical demand, lead to cloudy water, create odours and shorten the life of

filtration systems. They also require more time, money and energy to treat once established.

PREVENTION AND CONTROL

Combating biofilms takes more than routine chlorination – it requires a layered and proactive strategy. Regular physical cleaning, including brushing pool walls, tiles and fittings, helps prevent early attachment. Frequent inspection of filters, balance tanks and pipework helps catch problems before they escalate. Shocking the system with periodic superchlorination or oxidising treatments can also help break down biofilm layers, and advanced disinfection technologies like UV, ozone, or submicron filtration are especially useful in high-risk settings such as spas and splash pads. Continuous chemical and microbiological monitoring is also essential, enabling operators to spot trends and take corrective action before a full outbreak occurs.

Training plays a vital role. Pool plant professionals must understand not only how to spot the signs of biofilms but also how to take decisive action before they cause harm.

STAYING ONE STEP AHEAD

Ultimately, biofilm control is not just about treatment –it’s about knowledge and vigilance. Understanding the science behind biofilms allows operators to take a strategic approach to their prevention and management. And, professional qualifications, such as STA’s Level 3 Award in Pool Plant Operations, ensure that operators are equipped to protect bathers and maintain a safe, hygienic aquatic environment.

STA is also a member of the Biofilm Alliance, reflecting its commitment to advancing biofilm awareness, research, and operational standards across the leisure industry. By working alongside this network, STA aims to improve knowledge and raise best practice across the sector.

With the right expertise, training, industry collaboration, and preventative measures in place, aquatic facilities can stay ahead of this hidden but formidable threat.

Old Meets New In Cambridgeshire Village

In this issue, we take a look at how a domestic swimming pool owner, located in a village with old roots, benefitted greatly from Waterco’s modern filtration technologyto achieve crystal clear water with the minimum amount of effort

The village of Great Shelford on the outskirts of Cambridge plays host to the annual Midsummer Fair and Shakespeare Festival, and summers aside, like large parts of the country, it’s an area well known for having typically wet and cool English weather.

While Cambridge is recognised for its vast student population, it is also one of the fastest growing areas in the UK for high tech businesses and the home of many start-ups and spin offs from the university. This has meant a growing demand for housing to accommodate families moving into the area –in particular, the villages around Cambridge are seeing a lot of development and increased traffic.

Nestled in the outskirts of Great Shelford lives a small family, who have enjoyed the benefits of life with a garden pool for well over 25 years. The Philips family also enjoy the convenience of being close enough to the city to cycle in – however, roads are increasingly busy and there is extensive building work taking place with developments seemingly always being in mid construction.

Due to increased air pollution, Mrs Philips decided to refurbish and refit all equipment for the family’s 50m³ in-ground pool.

“I opted to have a new liner fitted, as well as a completely new range of pool equipment, as my previous equipment couldn’t handle the dust produced by nearby construction sites, as well as the debris created in fields nearby when they are being farmed,” explained Mrs Philips. “The clarity and quality of the pool water suffered – it always seemed dirty and never looked as clean as I would have liked. I even considered having the pool filled in, as the maintenance was just too time consuming and I was beginning to wonder if it was time to just give up on owning a pool.”

The sand filtration system Mrs Philips had installed previously was unable to filter out the super fine particles of dust from the nearby fields and building work, leading to frequent occurrences of build up inside the filter.

This increased the need for backwashing, which was both a time consuming maintenance task and a huge waste of water.

“I spoke with several pool companies and told them my problem and was told about the

new media that was available – Waterco’s glass pearls,” she said.

“It seems a lot has changed from when I had the pool built 25 years ago! After checking the facts online, I realised I could make my life easier and enjoy having a pool again.”

Mrs Philips also liked the fact that Waterco had a local base in the UK. Plus, the Micron sand filter, one of the other solutions she chose, came with a ten year warranty and had a unique lateral design, which kept water costs and chemical costs down without sacrificing good results.

She decided on the Waterco Glass Pearl

media, Micron side mounted sand filter and a Lacronite pump – all of which only took a few hours to install into her newly relined pool.

“Never in 25 years has the pool water looked so good – even the neighbours have commented how crystal clear the water is and have asked what I have done. I would recommend Waterco Glass Pearls and Micron Sand Filter to anyone wanting crystal clear water with the minimum amount of effort.”

THE WATERCO EQUIPMENT IN A SNAPSHOT

Glass Pearl Media: The next generation in filter media – these chemically inert glass pearls can filter out dirt particles below 3 microns in size. The spherical shape also results in low friction levels, reducing the need to backwash and saving pool owners both time and precious water. Plus its high purity means very little backwashing is required to cleanse the filter media prior to commissioning the filter.

Glass pearls are also safer for swimmers if they were ever to leak from the filter into the pool, because of their smooth and spherical shape.

Micron Sand Filter: Waterco’s range of Micron Sand Filters are designed for durability and efficiency, with a fibreglass reinforced polyester resin construction and the latest controlled filament winding machine. They use ‘depth filtration’ to drive dirt through the filter bed, allowing only cleansed water to pass through the filter’s laterals.

Micron Sand Filters are easy to maintain and clean, with a monthly backwash as easy as turning the Multiport lever from filter to backwash.

Lacronite Pump: The Lacronite pump is perfect for larger size domestic swimming pools, as its consistently high level of performance allows it to deal with a huge volume of water, plus the dirt and debris that comes with it.

This pump is designed to save money, energy and time, with the speed settings allowing for reduced water flow without compromising the effectiveness of the filter

Dual Use Swim Spas For Exercise And Relaxation

For anyone wanting to both relax and exercise in water, swim spas tick both boxes, and can often comple te the budget box too! Normally chosen as an alternative to a traditional small garden pool, these counter-current equipped products have options covering both price conscious families, through to top-level athletes that need a serious training aid. In this issue, we take a look at what’s currently available

As a single product offering the combined benefits of both a swimming space and a hot tub or spa environment that comes in a relatively straightforward to maintain and own package that can also be installed quickly –that’s a summary of a swim spa and it’s not surprising that they have become a firm favourite with both families and serious athletes plus anyone in between over recent years.

Swim spas come in many shapes, sizes and therefore budgets too. For families who want to provide some water based fun and entertainment but without splashing out too much, there’s clearly a lot to like at the entrylevel end of the market and the versatility of the products found at this lower end of the swim spa price range mean that owners have an area where the kids can let off some steam, and at other times, there’s also the option of a dedicated pool for either some gentle exercising or a space in which to relax and soothe away any aches and pains.

At the other end of the market, more serious swimmers and athletes will want a much more complete set of features and budgets will reflect this.

Whatever the need, when comparing costs to many swimming pools, a self-contained swim spa package represents nothing short of outstanding value for money, which of course further adds to their appeal.

With a number of manufacturers providing numerous models across the sector, here, we highlight just a few of the options

PASSION’S ACTIVITY MODELS –FOUR VALUE FOR MONEY OPTIONS

For the last three decades, Netherlands-based Passion Spas has been engineering and manufacturing numerous spa and hot tub models and the company has perhaps one of the widest ranges of swim spas on the market.

All of the company’s models represent great value for money so it’s no surprise that their entry-level products have always been popular and they have been keen always to offer new models that keep up with the latest technology and trends.

One of the company’s newest series of swim spas is the Activity, and the range offers models with two different lengths and two depths, providing flexibility at a key price point. Whether the Activity 1, 1 Deep, 2 or 2 Deep is chosen, each model is a dynamic swim spa that is an excellent blending of two worlds.

On one side there is all the comfort, pleasure and therapy benefits of a traditional spa or hot tub which is provided by 50 massage jets, whilst on the other side, the swim function is equipped with Passion Spas’ unique River Swim System™ and Current-lift Technology™.

The River Swim system consists of two floor jets and five large swim jets, placed in a row to create a steady flow of water over the entire width of the swim spa. Users can control the intensity of the water stream and when doing so, the flow is equally divided over the whole width of the current.

Because of this unique technique, the water stream covers a wide area and is effectively positioned below the water

surface, enabling users to swim with their head comfortably above water.

If the intensity of the River Swim System is decreased, the Current-Lift Technology is automatically activated, enabling the swimmer to remain in the prone position.

At the top end of their range, you’ll find the DT (dual temperature) models and then something a little different in the DTL.

The DTL range consists of two models –the DTL-6 and DTL-8. Unsurprisingly, the DT also stands for dual temperature, but these two swim spas are arranged in an ‘L’ shape.

Choose from either a 6ft hydrotherapy spa (featuring 35 Stainless Steel Patented Helix Jets) or 8 ft model (with 61 or 45 Jets), and the company seamlessly integrate both into one amazing unit.

Each combine Tidalfit’s world-class 14ft exercise pool with Tidalfit’s Quad Adjustable Swim Jet System as standard.

spa cover, works to ensure the best rate of heat retention available.

There’s also plenty of other options that can be added to enhance each swim spa.

These include water purification options for both the pool and spa sections, DynaBrite LED lighting and an Aquatic Training System for the pool area, plus a BBA™ fully integrated Bluetooth sound system, cabinet speakers, and worldwide Wi-Fi spa control app module for the spa side.

WELLIS’ W-FLOW MODELS PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE WORKOUT OPTIONS

Wellis have had great success with their swim spa range which has been enhanced regularly over recent years and their current entry-level model – the Danube – has benefitted greatly from both design and technology improvements.

The base model is available in two configurations and can be powered by either Riverjets or a W-Flow System. For users wanting more power and flexibility, the latter is the better choice. The impressive W-Flow System allows users to choose between sixspeed levels from the slowest, most comfortable ‘floating’ setting, right up to the hardest exercise workout.

Similar to a modern treadmill, users can predefine the swimming speeds one after another, so slower stages can be inserted between swimming sprints and custom workouts can be created.

The width of the water flow within the WFlow is only 50-60cm and the flow rate can be adjusted between 0.4-2.5 km/h.

The inside of this model was simplified too. Lines are much cleaner and more modern looking, plus the space was optimised. Wellis have included two massage seats which are located either side of the water flow system, meaning owners can use the Danube for professional swimming and to enjoy a relaxing massage too. Rear filter housings have also been placed at the end of the swimming area

so that the active water area is more than 50cm wider than before.

If a larger model is needed that still features a W-Flow System, joining the Danube this year is the Amazonas Life Grand Prix swim spa – a model that is ideal for swimming enthusiasts seeking both fitness and family relaxation. With its spacious 2.5m width and 5.5m length, its design accommodates two seats with double the amount of jets of the Danube. With and an impressive 8,000 litre water capacity, it offers a stylish, updated design and a prestigious look.

Solutions To Minimise Chlorine Use In Water

Whether it’s through the use of salt chlorinators, UV or Ozone or other systems, when it comes to the treatment of pool and spa water, there’s now a number of tried and tested non-chemical based, low and no chlorine solutions on offer. With options often providing a gentler wet leisure environment, it’s easy to see why they are increasingly popular. This issue, we take a closer look at a few of the available options

Lowering chlorine use in wet leisure settings, and in some cases, removing it completely, has been a priority across both private and public environments and provides a welcome answer to help eradicate the unwelcome odours we all too often associate with water that’s been treated with the chemical. That’s not to say chlorine no longer has a role – far from it.

However, the minimisation of its use follows years of feedback from users, owners and operators spanning both the domestic and commercial sectors. There was a clear want for its reduction and this meant industry innovators were tasked with producing safe, dependable and effective disinfection solutions that don’t rely on large doses of chlorine for the sanitisation of water. As a result of this challenge, there is now a wide range of treatments available which do exactly that, with UV systems and salt chlorinators leading the pack of the many alternatives that are on offer.

To varying degrees, chlorine will always have its place in the sanitation of pools and spas, but reducing its use provides some highly appreciated, additional benefits, meaning many pools across the UK have already adopted, or are at least looking at, alternative approaches to water sanitisation.

With numerous solutions and systems on offer, here, we take a look at just some of the options that are available.

AQUASERVICE’S VERSATILE UV SYSTEM IS SUITABLE FOR ALL SWIMMING POOL TYPES

According to Norwegian manufacturer Aquaservice, their AquaUV Pool Line UV System (AQS-PL UV for short) is the most versatile swimming pool UV system on the market. It’s designed to treat all types of pool usage, from heavy use children’s swimming pools to low use diving or private pools.

Of course, each type of usage requires a different type of UV set up – no one type of UV system will fit all swimming pool usage and requirements – and systems are offered with flow rates ranging from 6m3/h to 580m3/h and the total maximum lamp power output spanning 0.4kW to 8.4kW. For ease of installation, connections can be amended to suit pipework and in addition, having the ability to supply bespoke options when required, makes it one of the most unique swimming pool UV systems available on the market.

These medium pressure UV lamp systems offer a minimum lamp life of 10,000 hours, and as with the company’s Pool Line filters, they have been designed to comply with NSF 50 standard. Other features of the AQS-PL UV systems include:

• Corrosion Resistant Epoxy Coating

• Power Stepping

• Manual or Automatic wiper

• BUS connection option

• Temperature Switch or Sensor.

AQS-PL UV systems emit polychromatic UV radiation. The multiple wavelengths in the medium pressure UV lamps destroy the molecular bonds of combined chlorine/chloramine compounds. Therefore, UV removal of chloramines is a non-chemical and reliable method to control combined

chlorine in swimming pools. In addition, each system is sized and designed to achieve a minimum of a 99.9% reduction of cryptosporidium, therefore guaranteeing safe bathing for all with no risk of chlorine resistant organisms surviving in the water.

SOLUTIONS FOR PURE AND PERFECTLY DISINFECTED WATER

Since its inception in 2000, BIO-UV Group has grown to become one of the leading companies in water disinfection and treatment systems. From their base in France where they design and manufacture their systems, the team has built a strong partnership network across the world. Here in the UK, their partner is AstralPool who exclusively distribute the innovative and environmentally friendly solutions which are based on UV-C, Ozone and AOP technology. Each one is ecological and an automatic process that requires minimal addition of chemicals to the pool. This guarantees well-being and bathing comfort by reducing irritation.

For the residential market, BIO-UV has developed and launched the innovative concept, O’Clear. Easy to install and compatible with all types of pools, it is a unique water treatment system that guarantees a perfectly disinfected pool without the addition of chemicals. The water circulates inside a reactor where the UV-C, associated with O’Clear’s exclusive electrodes, eradicates all microorganisms and thus ensures flawless results with only 0.5g/litre of salt.

PoolPolisher

For maximum efficiency:

Combine the Pool Line filter with the PoolPolisher filter

The Aquafilter Pool Polisher is a simple filtration solution for pools. Made from HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene), it works seamlessly with the Aquafilter Pool line filter. It effectively ensures flow and optimal treatment during backflushing and servicing.

The two-stage filtration system provides consistent 5-micron filtration, which helps maintain low turbidity in the pool water, ensuring it stays clear and clean. This is particularly important for pools that require efficient filtration during maintenance periods, such as servicing, which typically disrupts water flow.

Partial Flow Filter:

The filter is designed to treat a partial part of the total flow.

Polishing the Water Over Time:

The filter is for finer filtration at a later stage in the filtration removing finer particles after the bulk of the filtration has been done.

Depth Filtration:

The filter material works by capturing particles within its depth, rather than just on the surface. This type of filtration allows for greater dirt-holding capacity and is effective at removing a wide range of particulate sizes.

Servicing/Maintenance for Main Pressure Filter:

The partial flow filter is used in conjunction with and during the servicing of the Pool Line Filter. It helps ensure continued filtration when the Pool Line filter is undergoing maintenance.

Easy to Change Filter Bags:

The design includes user-friendly maintenance features, such as easily replaceable filter bags, which reduces downtime during maintenance.

5 Micron Recommended Filtration Grade:

The filter is recommended to have a 5-micron filtration grade, which means it’s designed to filter out particles that are 5 microns or larger in size. This is effective at removing fine sediment, dirt, and some microorganisms.

Perfect Poolside Testing Solutions

Thanks to a number of innovations, water testing is now more sophisticated, accurate and convenient than ever before. It’s a sector which has embraced the latest available technology whilst still producing more low-tech options too. The result is a wide range of poolside equipment that has revolutionised the testing process within pools, spas and more. With accuracy and ease of use always a high priority, we take a closer look at some options

Asafe environment is an essential and expected part of any wet leisure experience, and that obviously extends to the water found in pools, spas, hot tubs and more. It needs to be safe, clean and clear, but the last thing owners and operators want to do is spend an excessive amount of time and energy monitoring and testing the water found in these products, let alone doing it with any inaccurate equipment.

Fast, user-friendly and accurate testing products are therefore a godsend. Not just for highlighting any safety issues, but also for ensuring equipment is operating within the correct environment too, as if not, there’s potentially a heavy price to pay for new equipment further down the line.

User safety is of course at the top of every pool or spa owner’s list though, and with commercial facilities experiencing much higher bather loads than their domestic cousins, owners and users need to be able to trust that the cooling waters that are being enjoyed are safe and in the best possible condition. Considerable time and money has been spent on developing more efficient and user-friendly testing systems, and that’s not surprising, as for commercial operators in particular, where there is the possibility of infection, only the latest products and best procedures are good enough. Down time as a result of poor procedures invariably leads to bad press, and this often spells disaster to a facility’s reputation, with guests then voting with their feet – a scenario to be avoided at all costs!

Regardless of size though, wet leisure products are always major investments for their owners and they need to be kept in the best possible condition – and that includes the water within them. Therefore, having the correct products to test water conditions is essential and needed on an ongoing basis and in this issue, we take a closer look at just some of the testing solutions that are currently on the market.

BAYROL TAKES THE GUESSWORK OUT OF WATER TESTING AND TREATMENT

Available through Lighthouse, the BAYROL Electronic Pooltester measures seven essential water parameters: pH, free and total chlorine, bromine, alkalinity, stabiliser (isocyanuric acid) and active oxygen (mps). seconds to just two minutes, depending on the parameters measured. No more interpreting results on test strips or colorimetric test kits that can be difficult to read when there are variations in light levels. With the BAYROL Electronic Pooltester, users get an immediate, reliable and accurate digital reading of the pool’s water parameters. And should it drop into the water, the Electronic Pooltester is safe – it’s fully waterproof and won’t sink!

The Pooltester can be used with the BAYROL MyPool Expert app which interprets the results and provides a customised diagnosis advice on exactly what is required to bring the water back into balance and

Creating The Ideal Indoor Environment

Without effective ventilation and dehumidification, indoor pool and spa settings can suffer from overly humid conditions which can lead to condensation, mould, corrosion and even potential structural damage. For users, there can also be an uncomfortable environment to contend with too. So getting the conditions right is essential for both owners and users alike and in this issue, we take a closer look at some of the solutions on offer

Designing, creating and maintaining the perfect environment for indoor swimming pools of all sizes, along with spas, swim spas and even hot tubs is no easy task. It’s one thing ensuring the water is clean and heated to the desired operating temperature, but providing the correct atmosphere outside of the water is an entirely different challenge. Without providing effective dehumidification and ventilation, problems can arise for both users and operators of the facilities, plus potentially, even the fabric of the building itself.

One of the most obvious issues is condensation, something which if not dealt with, will ultimately lead to damage of either the décor or even the structure of the building.

So it’s essential that an indoor environment should have a well-planned and appropriate dehumidification and ventilation system which will provide comfortable conditions for swimmers, bathers, spectators and staff, plus just as importantly, one that also protects any building too.

As you would expect, it’s a specialist area, but thankfully there’s plenty of knowledge, advice and product choices available which will solve numerous operating challenges –regardless of whether it’s under the heading of ‘environmental control’ or just ‘dehumidification’ – and in doing so, will save energy and therefore costs for owners and operators, whilst also ensuring the longevity of the wider installation and its equipment. With the wealth of expertise that’s available in the sector, designers and installers should find that choosing the most energy efficient way to manage indoor pool and spa

environments, whilst satisfying building control regulations, isn’t as daunting a task as they had feared. In fact, creating the conditions for the perfect operating environment is now a breeze and in this issue, we look at just some of the solutions that are available for a variety of installations.

CASE STUDY STAFFORDSHIRE SPA HOTEL UPGRADES AHU IN JUST 5 WEEKS!

In early June 2024, Recotherm were asked to quote on supplying an air handling unit (AHU) for a saltwater pool at Hoar Cross Hall, a prestigious, award-winning Spa Hotel in Staffordshire. Following extensive liaison with Recotherm’s in-house experts, the order for an Aeris 200 was placed with the request of a quick turnaround. Despite this being a bespoke horizontal unit, the Recotherm team ensured the unit was delivered, as requested, only five weeks after placing the order. This speedy response meant that the AHU was installed and up and running by the end of August, with an immediate improvement in the

saltwater pool hall atmosphere, resulting in a more comfortable and relaxing environment for bathers. Hoar Cross Hall were so impressed with the quick turnaround and quality of the results that they ordered a further two units; one for their hydrotherapy pool (an Aeris 100) and another for the Nordic heat and ice suite (an Aeris 200 which had to be delivered flat-packed!).

Phil Murphy, Managing Director at Hoar Cross Hall said: “Our clients and staff were surprised, and delighted, by the instantaneous improvement to our saltwater pool hall environment. Due to this we realised we needed to upgrade the

experience in two further spa areas and were impressed with the turnaround times, professionalism and flexibility of being able to build on site.”

the latent energy which is used to assist the air and water heating. By utilising this method, a heat recirculation cycle is created, and energy costs are kept to a minimum. The potential energy savings are huge. In fact, compared to more traditional types of heating and ventilation methods, running cost savings of over 50% are achievable while corresponding CO2 emissions can dramatically reduce by up to 70%. Total of peace of mind is provided as commissioning is included as standard together with a two year on site part and labour warranty. The Variheat’s endless configuration options offers the ultimate in flexibility to suit every plant room.

They are designed to provide both air and water heating as well as dehumidification. Traditionally, these units operate with hot water supplied by a standard boiler. However, in alignment with Certikin’s commitment to renewable energy, they have established a collaboration with Global Energy Systems. them to offer high temperature air source heat pumps as a more environmentally conscious alternative for the heat source.

Designed to work specifically with the UK climate, they will outperform gas, oil and electric systems delivering over 300% efficiency. All models available offer remote monitoring which enables live performance data to be fed back to Global Energy Systems and if possible, issues to be fixed remotely.

TAKE CONTROL OF THE POOL ENVIRONMENT WITH CERTIKIN

2025 has seen Certikin launch their new range of air-to-air heat pump dehumidifiers. Manufactured by their long-term partner and industry experts, Dantherm Group, these have been introduced as a replacement for the outgoing wall mounted Vaporex dehumidifiers. They have a comparable physical size to the Vaporex models and minimal adjustments are required to the pipework connections, they have also been designed with a larger LPHW air heating capacity suitable for lower temperature hot water.

Compared to ducted system dehumidifiers these high performance and low cost units minimise the need for costly air distribution ductwork. Operating on the heat pump principle, these units recirculate pool air by removing the moisture content and delivering warm, dry air back to the pool hall. By working this way, they maintain a comfortable humidity, minimise condensation and keep heating costs as low as possible.

Removing humidity from the air with a heat pump enables the Dantherm dehumidifier to absorb latent energy and return it into the pool hall air as ‘free’ air heating. Its heat pump technology converts 2.5kW to air heating for every 1kW electricity consumed! As well as the range of wall mounted units, the new range also features two floor standing models. All models come with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.

ENJOY UNMATCHED HEAT RECOVERY PERFORMANCE WITH HEATSTAR’S PHOENIX EC

Heatstar produce some of the most energy efficient swimming pool environmental systems on the market thanks to investing in and adapting the latest energy saving technologies. These include variable speed fans (that only run when there is a demand), highly efficient plate-to-plate heat recuperators (which have no moving mechanical parts) to recover any energy that would typically be lost to outside, and heat pump dehumidification with active recycling to both air and pool water.

The Heatstar Phoenix EC is a hybrid heat recovery ventilation system that incorporates all three of these different, highly effective technologies, which work together to create what can be reasonably claimed to be the optimum environmental control solution for high specification indoor swimming pools.

The technologies focus on three main areas: The fans used in the units, optimising heat recovery (‘free’ heat) and energy efficient dehumidification.

Firstly, the use of ‘Blue EC’ on-demand fan technology with backward

curved fans, the most energy efficient fans on the market. These digital fans utilise ‘autofan’ technology whereby the speed and power of the air-recirculation fan is managed automatically to enable significant energy savings whenever there is low demand. Secondly, Heatstar use cross-flow recuperators to optimise heat recovery. The recuperator passively conducts heat from the exhausted pool room air via a series of adjoining plates directly to the incoming colder fresh air. This process, in combination with the dehumidification heat pump, produces unrivalled levels of heat recovery.

Last, but by no means least, Heatstar utilise energy efficient dehumidification. The dehumidification heat pump within the Phoenix creates a cold evaporator coil to condense the moisture present in the air to reduce humidity levels. Through this process the heat pump absorbs both latent and sensible energy which is upgraded and recycled back into both the pool room air and pool water. Efficiencies of over 380% are possible through this process.

ITALIAN DESIGNED SOLUTIONS FOR POOL PROJECTS OF ALL SIZES

The Humidity Solutions range of small pools and wet area dehumidifiers are European manufactured and offer Italian design to provide innovative solutions such as the freestanding HiDew DVS vertical floor standing dehumidifier which is perfect for new and retrofit projects. The dehumidifier can easily be positioned at the poolside and is plug in and play with a drain required to remove the water extracted from the air.

Outside the immediate pool area, the DOS horizontal ceiling mounted unit becomes an option as does the DCS which is a wall mounted

The Heatstar Phoenix EC is a hybrid heat recovery ventilation system that incorporates three different, highly effective technologies

dehumidifier which can be positioned in an adjoining technical room, with the pool air recirculated through the dehumidifier using ductwork and grills which can be supplied as part of the installation kit.

Both dehumidifiers are out of sight for a client who doesn’t want the aesthetics of their carefully designed pool to be affected.

The ceiling and technical room units also allow for maintenance to be provided without entering the client’s area, reducing the impact on commercial operations or residential clients.

Outputs from 40 litres/day extraction and 350m3/hr air movement all the way up to 300 litres/day and 2,000m3/hr can be accommodated through ten units within the range. This makes it ideal for most residential or hotel pools and wet areas.

Commercial pools require different options where energy is a key factor, bringing in to focus running costs and efficiencies. Heat recovery, external condensers, static pressure available to facilitate ducting, remote control panels and temperature control are all components that can be included on Humidity Solutions’ commercial range of dehumidifiers which range from 100 litres/hr, 900m3/hr up to 3,000 litres/hr and 25,000m3/hr of air movement.

Modular dehumidifiers with heat recovery units can be supplied in two parts making installation and access easier in tight plant rooms or where access is limited.

RECOTHERM PROVIDE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR TO INDOOR PROJECTS

The use of air source heat pumps to heat the water in external pools is well established but many of these are not suitable for indoor pools and installers need to be aware of the pitfalls such as low operating ambient limits and instead go for high quality, performance systems for both air to water and air to air. Many of Recotherm’s domestic units are

designed around heat pumps providing the low pressure, hot water (LPHW) and the company has also recently developed their Aerum systems that provide fresh air dehumidification combined with air to air heat via Toshiba heat pumps – ideal where additional LPHW plant is not needed or desired.

With Aerum, all the features normally associated with the Recotherm Aeris range (high build quality, state-of-the-art controls, pleasant fresh air environment in the pool hall and technical back up) are still there, but with the added advantage that the unit is a standalone package and can provide a

significant amount of cooling in the summer if this is required.

Heat pumps may be a necessity in future and they can be a benefit if owners want to reduce their impact on the environment, but they do operate at lower temperatures in a high temperature environment so heat exchangers and ductwork generally need to be bigger which can impact on space and capital costs.

To help customers make the correct choice of system, Recotherm have qualified, time served surveyors, designers and f-gas engineers in-house.

The company has also expanded their Service Department staff to take on the demand for service and commissioning visits. All of the firm’s engineers are fully trained on Recotherm AHUs and Trend controllers. Their new engineers also have a wealth of experience on competitors’ units, which allows the company to troubleshoot if someone has a problem whilst the Recotherm technical helpline provides off site assistance and on call resolutions when possible. Pool Floors That Are On The Move!

Offering flexibility, improved functionality and when a pool is not in use, the ultimate in safety systems, moving floors are an increasingly specified option for swimming pools in the commercial and high-end domestic sectors. Whether it’s to vary the depth for pool users or to completely cover a pool area, there are a number of innovative options available to convert pools at the touch of a button and here, we feature some of the available solutions

When it comes to domestic swimming pool settings, even a fairly modest installation can take up a lot of valuable space, and that space will often be at a premium, especially in urban locations..

This is true for commercial installations too, which also potentially have an additional issue where the footprint of a pool can often occupy a space that is much larger than many of the other sporting facilities on offer. So maximising the use of space in either setting is clearly a huge benefit offered by

pools that incorporate a moving floor, and it is usually the main reason for investing in one.

Totally transforming the area a pool occupies into something else, something which could provide a completely different use for the owner, well, that opens up numerous options and possibilities. Suddenly a games room or additional entertainment area is now possible for a home or maybe an additional sports hall becomes a realistic option for a leisure centre. This flexibility opens up a whole host of usage options.

The advantages of a moving pool floor don’t

stop there though. When fully raised, safety is a huge and obvious benefit, but so too is lowering the running costs and maintenance needs of a pool. A moving floor can alter the water depth, making the pool a much more flexible space and able to accommodate a wider range of users.

With a number of obvious benefits being offered, these impressively engineered options are now being viewed much more seriously in both the domestic and commercial sectors, and here, we take a look at just some of the moving floor solutions which are currently available for pools.

ASTRALPOOL ADDS A CUTTINGEDGE SOLUTION TO ITS PORTFOLIO

The future of swimming pool versatility has arrived, and it’s making waves across the UK! AstralPool, one of the most trusted names in the pool industry, is now an official UK supplier of Holland Aqua Sight’s cuttingedge moving floor systems – a development set to transform how pools are designed, built and used.

The unique solution is a floating concept combined with a stainless steel frame and a hydraulic system. It has been developed and tested by the specialists at Holland Aqua Sight and meets stringent safety standards. The floor can be adjusted to variable water levels, allowing children to play safely in shallow water, swim laps in mid-depth water, and dive into the full depth of the pool. Additionally, the floor can be set at terrace level, enabling owners to safely let children play without fear of them approaching the pool.

Hosting a party? Not a problem, owners can use the movable floor as a terrace, dance floor, or event venue as the movable pool floor can withstand very high loads. For each

project, the technical and structural requirements are thoroughly calculated to ensure a safe floor is guaranteed. Not only can the floor be made in various shapes and sizes, but it is also possible to design an integrated staircase as well as choosing a finish for the floor according to each client’s own style and taste.

Through AstralPool, UK companies can now access these systems with additional support available from Holland Aqua Sight for design, in-house installation and servicing.

EXPERIENCE THE ULTIMATE IN FLEXIBILITY WITH A TIELEMAN MOVING FLOOR

Supplied in the UK by Certikin, the Tieleman moving floor is suitable for both domestic and commercial use and is the ultimate in water leisure flexibility.

The floor can be adjusted to different water levels, turning a swimming pool into a paddling pool for children, a dance floor or extra living space.

Offering multifunctional space, and the ultimate in safety, the floor is powered by water hydraulics, using a floating principle with

buoyancy providing the stability in the closed position with no access to the pool below.

The movable floor can be finished to match any scheme. The possibilities include stone, ceramic, mosaic, wood and stainless steel.

In a raised position, the movable floor ensures lower heating costs and use of chemicals and, as no dirt can enter the water, there’s reduced maintenance.

Suitable for skimmer and overflow pools and the shape made bespoke to your pool, the options are endless. It is possible to incorporate additional features such as a tilt mechanism that allows one end of the pool to be deeper than the other and it is even possible to have two movable floors move separately from each other in one pool.

Certikin offers a full service, from design through to installation.

T&A’S MOVABLE FLOOR INCREASES FLEXIBILITY, SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY

Looking to get the most out of your swimming pool, whether it’s morning, noon, or night?

T&A Group has an innovative solution: the AquaMove movable floor. This game-changing

T&A’s AquaMove movable floor is a game-changing product that offers unparalleled flexibility, safety and sustainability

product offers unparalleled flexibility, safety and sustainability, three values that T&A Group proudly upholds.

“The principle of a movable floor is simple,” said T&A Engineer Johan Moortgat. “Move the floor up or down to adjust the pool’s depth. Want to close off the pool entirely and create more space on your terrace or in your living room? No problem. The technical execution, though, is where the magic happens.”

The AquaMove movable floor uses buoyancy and a powerful tube motor.

Since the motor is under the floor, no extra technical room is needed. Anchors are only required in the floor, avoiding visual and practical hindrances. This makes AquaMove perfect for various pool types.

Everything is custom-made, and T&A Group handles installation and annual maintenance.

The company can also remotely read many parameters for preventive maintenance too.

The AquaMove can be adjusted continuously and comes in models with load capacities from 50 to 200kg/m². “The products are designed to be walked on, and you can even host a party on the AquaMove! With our optional Stability Hermetic Pack,

you ensure even more stability. Safety sensors stop the movement if they detect any objects or differences in load,” added Johan.

The AquaMove offers significant ecological and economic benefits. When closed, it reduces heat loss, contamination and water evaporation, resulting in lower consumption of water, energy and chemicals. “With decreasing prices and its role in reducing heat loss, it’s becoming a realistic option,” advised Joeri Dils, CEO of T&A Group.

A SWIMMING POOL OF THE FUTURE – THE NIVEKO MOTION POOL

With technological progress affecting every sphere of our lives, it is not surprising that even traditional swimming pools are seeing some revolutionary changes. NIVEKO has now launched a multifunctional pool that is flexible enough to suit every member of the family yet is also an exceptional product with a timeless design – a pool with a movable bottom!

The NIVEKO Motion pool combines state-ofthe-art technology with NIVEKO’s quality pools and years of experience. For convenience, the product is supplied ‘All-In-One’ without the need for additional installation. This approach

underlines the company’s efforts to provide not only an outstanding product, but also a seamless and fast installation process.

The movable floor allows the depth of the pool to be easily adjusted to suit each user’s specific needs. The wide range of options for setting any depth from 0 to 150 cm allows the pool to be used as a safe paddling pool for children or as a full swimming pool for adults. This flexibility means the pool can also be used by people with limited physical mobility or for physiotherapy.

Raising the bottom to ground level prevents anyone from entering the pool when it is unattended or not in use, making it safe for every member of the family, including pets. In addition, the movable bottom effectively prevents overheating, heat loss and minimises evaporation. It prevents dirt from getting into the pool too, significantly reducing the need for maintenance plus serves as an effective covering of the water surface during the winter months. What’s more, with a single click or turn of the key, owners can easily transform their pool into a full-fledged terrace, making the most of garden space.

KBE – A LONG AND PROUD HISTORY IN MOVING FLOOR SYSTEMS

With a history in moving pool floors that stretches back almost 60 years, KBE Bauelemente are one of oldest established moving floor manufacturers and they have well over 1,000 satisfied customers worldwide. Their portfolio of solutions is available in the UK through Birmingham-based Suntrap Systems and their easy to operate systems are suitable for all types of new and existing pools, and feature an electro-mechanical drive system plus a lightweight construction.

All metal parts used in the pool tank are made of 316 stainless steel or a special bronze and the surface consists of reinforced polyester sections screwed together with 6mm wide slots, which allows waterflow through 1.5% of the surface area of the floor.

Alternatively, the moving floor surface may be formed by cassettes which accept tiling. KBE find that private customers always prefer this option so that the tiling matches the

poolside giving an improved aesthetic appeal, as well as increasing flexibility in the use of the pool area for entertaining, family sports and more.

Integrated steps are often specified as these are self-depositing and have the same finish as the floor itself.

The floor is automatically locked using self locked screws in all positions. This is a high security system for extra safety.

Large cleaning flaps allow the use of an automatic pool cleaner under the floor overnight, as the area below the floor is free from cables, meaning it is not necessary to employ underwater divers.

No additional concrete support structure is needed and a minimum of site work to the pool tank is required for a KBE moving floor which meets the safety requirements of the European Standard EN 13451.11 in conjunction with Part 1.

THE SPACE WITH A BESPOKE OPTION FROM WRIGHTFIELD POOLS

Quality, Strength And More –The Appeal Of Stainless Steel

The appeal of stainless steel for use in various wet leisure projects goes much further than it being a material chosen for challenging environments. Trendsetters love its clean and polished looks, and the same applies for many accessories too. Strength and durability combined with timeless aesthetics are a winning combination that ensures stainless steel solutions are always in demand and here, we examine options utilising it

The durability and longevity of stainless steel used in the production of a range of wet leisure installations not only makes for a responsible choice, but the timeless material also provides luxury, high-end looks too. Stainless steel is recyclable, so it is ecologically sustainable, as well as being eminently durable. It can also withstand challenging climate conditions meaning it’s equally at home in both outdoor and indoor environments.

Lightweight and watertight, designers of projects of a more challenging nature, such as in hard to reach or elevated positions, often turn to the material too.

In short, its numerous benefits mean that the wet leisure industry has implemented stainless steel in many situations – from small spas, cold tubs, plunge pools and hot tubs, right up to the largest of swimming pools, plus of course, there’s also a wide range of ancillary products that are developed in stainless steel too. Ladders, steps, gratings, drains, lighting… all utilise this multitalented material due to its flexible nature, durability and timeless good looks capturing the imagination of many

manufacturers. Those same benefits and aesthetics have also captivated end users, making it a popular option across all sectors.

In this latest stainless steel-focused feature, we examine a selection of products that are utilising the versatile material for the benefits it provides.

FLOLUX FITTINGS – THEIR QUALITY IS REFLECTED IN THEIR FINISH

A huge amount of thought goes into designing luxury swimming pools and spas. But when selecting pool and spa fittings, such as eyeball returns, pool builders tend to default to white PVC as standard.

For luxury builds though, PVC fittings can compromise high-end design by detracting from a polished and luxurious look. Not only this, plastic fittings are known to break down and discolour over time due to chemical and UV exposure.

Plastica is proud to be the exclusive UK distributor of Diamant, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of high-end one-piece pools in stainless steel and polypropylene

STAINLESS STEEL SOLUTIONS

Flolux stainless steel fittings are superior in both style and substance. Purposefully designed to finish any build impeccably, their mirror-finish causes them to disappear into their surroundings, enhancing, instead of detracting from the design.

Made from 316L marine-grade stainless steel, they’re also longer-lasting than the PVC alternative. Compare the two hand-in-hand and the difference in quality is obvious –Flolux fittings are solid and weighty.

Suitable for concrete and some fibreglass pools, Flolux fittings come in push-fit and threaded systems that are very easy to install during the build, or retrospectively.

The ideal upgrade for any luxury pool or spa, stainless steel fittings are successfully offered as a contract variation by builders across the globe, helping to increase customer satisfaction and profitability.

With distributors worldwide, their range of quality products are available in the UK through Certikin and Fairlocks Pool Products.

CASE STUDY PRIVATE WILTSHIRE ESTATE RECEIVES A TIMELESS SOLUTION

One of the standout advantages of stainless steel is its lightweight nature, which allows for versatile installation options, even in challenging locations. A recent project at Seend Park, a privately owned Georgian estate in Wiltshire, showcased the adaptability of the material and was completed by Wrightfield Pools. With the historic property requiring a modern pool solution that could be installed with minimal disruption, their stainless steel system proved the perfect fit. The pool’s metal floor and side panels were carefully brought in via an existing window opening, allowing the build to progress efficiently

without compromising the building’s character.

Originally built in the 18th century and set within picturesque parkland, Seend Park required a pool that would complement its heritage while offering all the benefits of a contemporary leisure space. Stainless steel provided the ideal balance of modern engineering and timeless elegance. Beyond aesthetics, stainless steel pools are renowned for their easy maintenance, hygienic surface and corrosion resistance. This makes them a practical long-term investment for both private residences and commercial leisure facilities.

Acoalition – made up of Swim England, the Local Government Association, Chief Cultural and Leisure Officers Association, Community Leisure UK, Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers and ukactive – is calling for the £400m of funding announced in this year’s Spending Review to be invested in the facilities that people rely on every day to stay active and healthy.

They argue that local authorities are best placed to identify where investment is most needed, and to ensure the funding delivers maximum impact for communities.

With councils already the largest funders of public fitness and leisure services, directing investment through them would help safeguard and enhance the infrastructure that supports physical activity across the country.

This approach would also align with the Government’s 10 year health plan, enabling councils to work with health and care partners to promote active lifestyles and improve public health outcomes.

With leisure centres and swimming pools particularly popular amongst older age groups and people with health conditions, supporting these facilities will help tackle existing health inequalities most effectively.

The call comes amid stark warnings about the state of the nation’s leisure infrastructure:

• 30% of children in Year 7 cannot swim 25 metres confidently – up from 27% in 2017/18.

• Since 2010, 500 swimming pools have closed, representing a loss of over 34,000 square metres of water space. Nearly half of these closures occurred in the last five years.

• 63% of main sports halls and 60% of swimming pools are beyond their expected lifespans or in need of refurbishment.

• 24% of council areas face the risk of reducing or closing leisure services due to rising energy and operational costs.

• If current trends continue, physical inactivity could rise by 35% by 2030, placing further strain on the NHS and public finances.

• Public demand for health and fitness facilities is growing, with a record 11.5 million people now a member of a health and fitness club in the UK, but growth is hampered by economic conditions.

Andy Salmon, CEO of Swim England, said: “Swimming is particularly popular amongst older age groups, and those with a disability or long term health condition.

“If we want to tackle health inequalities and best support a healthier and happier nation then it’s vital we have a network of sustainable pools for people to access.

“That’s why we need to see this investment targeted at the pools and leisure centres the nation needs.”

Cllr Liz Green, Chair of the Local Government Association’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Board, said: “Local communities rely on sport and leisure facilities every day, whether it is swimming for the family or going to the gym. The benefits to both physical and mental health can be life-changing. Yet without urgent investment we risk losing these altogether.

“It is positive the Government has announced £400m for grass roots sports facilities. But for this funding to be truly transformative, we are calling for this to be invested via councils, so it can have the impact that delivers the ambition the Government has to improve our nation’s health.”

Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said:“It is vital that the Government does not repeat the same mistakes of the past by continuing to focus investment in facilities that have not delivered a happier, healthier nation, and instead invests in facilities that match the needs and demands of communities.

“Investing strategically in gyms, pools and leisure centres will demonstrate the Government’s commitment to the major drivers of physical activity and help address the market failure of public sector facilities so they can fulfil their essential role.”

Donna Pentelow, Chair of CLOA, said: “Council leisure centres, swimming pools and outdoor spaces are on the frontline of local health and wellbeing. We see every day how vital these facilities and spaces are to support active wellbeing for residents of all ages.

“A place-based investment approach ensures funding reaches the communities that need it most. By directing grassroots sports funding through local government, we can support its appropriate use to truly tackle health inequalities and deliver on the Government’s long-term health ambitions.”

Kirsty Cumming, CEO of Community Leisure UK, said: “Public leisure is at the heart of communities across the country, offering opportunities for communities to be physically, mentally and socially active.

“We urge the Government to invest in public leisure facilities, from single site community run pools to large leisure venues, supporting them to be sustainable and enabling people to live healthier and happier lives.”

...for this funding to be truly transformative, we are calling for this to be invested via councils, so it can have the impact that delivers the ambition the Government has...
