Editor’s letter

Looking back to my thoughts in our issue last June, I’m pleased to say that spring has finally delivered some decent weather, and whilst it hasn’t been perfect, it’s significantly better when compared to the previous couple of years, and as a result, the industry has seen a welcome and much needed boost. Better still, it looks like more warm weather is on the way with the Met Office advising ‘temperatures are expected to be above average for most areas’ as we move towards summer.

products that will definitely take the chill out of the water.

In complete contrast, a cool development that has taken off over the last few years is ice baths and plunge pools. They also go by numerous other names, but in short, these products all provide a setting for cold water therapy and inside we take a look at just some of the options that are currently available. In addition, there’s also a piece on the updated industry guidelines for these products, so keep an eye out for that too.

Inside, we also explore what’s new in the world of above-ground pools, a sector that’s still very popular despite alternative products being available, a fact that is largely due to a wide range of options offering lots of flexibility and exceptional value for money.

With the latest products offering improved benefits of ownership, combined with a thirst for knowledge from staff across the industry, exhibitions are great places to take in both, and once again, in this issue we also look at the events that are taking place in the coming months and beyond.

U B L I S H I N G

Of course, when it comes to the weather, it’s a fine line that our industry has to tread, especially on the domestic side, as the lack of rain leads to drought conditions and ultimately TUBs (Temporary Use Bans) and I’ve already started noticing news items talking about just how dry the last few months have been in the UK.

As a highly innovative industry, adapting to eco and environmental challenges has always been a strength across the many sectors which make up the wet leisure industry. Whether it’s reducing water use or producing more energy efficient products, being eco-friendly has always been a high priority for many manufacturers and today, it’s never been more important for the efficient operation of wet leisure products. So it’s somewhat fitting that in this issue we have a feature on one of the product sectors that has seen one of the biggest leaps forward over recent years – that sector being lighting. Inside, we look at the latest options that are illuminating pool and spa projects across the UK and showing them in their best possible light whilst also reducing energy costs. And whilst on the subject of energy efficiency, we’ve also an in depth look at the latest environmentally friendly heat pump models that are on the market –

If that wasn’t enough, we’ve a number of shorter pieces too. AstralPool UK’s Dyfed ThompsonSmith looks at the challenges faced by SMEs in this issue’s ‘Opinion’ piece, and there’s an update from the STA who have announced a new partnership with online membership platform Pool Operators Club.

We’ve two project pieces – one which highlights Heatstar’s innovative energy efficient solutions, plus another from pool manufacturer Carropools which perfectly demonstrates their unique and flexible design capabilities.

As ever, there’s also updates and further useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA, along with useful information from affiliated companies. Plus, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest news from both here in the UK and from abroad too.

So, that’s this latest issue of SPN fully broken down for you. As always, I hope you enjoy reading it and find it useful – let’s all hope this weather continues too and we all benefit from a long, hot and TUB-free summer!

Parkdean Resorts Opens New Swimming Pool At Devon Holiday Park

Parkdean Resorts, one of the UK’s leading holiday park operators, has just opened its brand-new swimming pool at Ruda Holiday Park in Croyde, North Devon.

The previous pool complex was demolished, rebuilt and transformed into a modern space with brand new changing facilities, toilets, a plant room, an outdoor relaxation area and a refurbished flume tower, known to locals as ‘Big Blue’.

The new pool complex has been designed with accessibility in mind, complete with a ramp, lift from the changing rooms to pool level and disabled toilets.

Parkdean Resorts is committed to caring for its people, parks and planet to create a positive environmental impact on nature and resources and to acting responsibly for the long-term sustainability of its business. Solar panels have been installed on the roof of the pool complex, allowing the park to begin generating its own electricity and reduce reliance on the grid.

Ruda Holiday Park scores 4/5 on TripAdvisor and employs 275 people from the community in peak season, making Parkdean Resorts a key local employer for Croyde.

Paul Braithwaite, General Manager of Ruda Holiday Park, said: “We’re really proud of the new pool complex, which marks an important milestone in our commitment to providing exceptional facilities and enhancing guest experience. We hope the new facilities provide even more reason for families to choose Ruda Holiday Park for their next getaway and can’t wait for guests to experience it at our grand re-opening this spring.”

IN BRIEF

WANSTEAD LEISURE CENTRE ONE STEP CLOSER TO COMPLETION

In May, Redbridge Council were thrilled to announce that the construction of the £16m Wanstead Leisure Centre extension was now in its final phases, bringing them one step closer to the completion of this exciting project.

The existing building is being extended to house a new 25-metre swimming pool, accessible changing rooms, new state-of-the-art classrooms for Wanstead High School students and other facilities, all of which will significantly enhance the education and leisure experience in Wanstead.

The Leader of Redbridge Council, Cllr Kam Rai, said: “Few, if any, local authorities are currently investing in leisure facilities, building swimming pools and creating new classrooms.

“We appreciate the support and patience shown by the local community and Wanstead High School as we work to provide this vital infrastructure, which will serve the community now and for future generations.”

The new facilities will complement the existing Leisure Centre, and construction is on track for completion in winter 2025.

WORK UNDERWAY AT £10M HAVEN FACILITY IN KENT

Bosses at an increasingly popular Kent holiday park have announced work is underway on a ‘first of its kind’ £10m leisure facility. Haven’s Kent Coast Holiday Park near Rochester, will soon play host to a new pool and water slide with the facilities expected to be open towards the end of the 2025 season.

Simon Palethorpe, Chief Executive of Haven, said: “In recent years, Brits have been rediscovering the joy of a UK seaside holiday and everything that holiday parks have on offer, with coastal communities and the wider economy directly benefiting from the continued growth in domestic tourism.”

Morgan Sindall On Track To Transform Crystal Palace National Sports Centre

Morgan Sindall Construction has been appointed to transform the iconic Crystal Palace National Sports having been appointed by the Greater London Authority (GLA) to lead the redevelopment.

Procured by Southern Construction Framework (SCF), Morgan Sindall plans to rejuvenate the Grade II listed facility completely, making it once more a centre of excellence whilst celebrating the site’s heritage and preserving historic features.

Crystal Palace Sports Centre’s revival has been led by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, who has pledged to provide improved sporting facilities for the community. Khan’s election pledge is set to transform the sports centre into the UK’s only 24/7, 365 days home of athletics and swimming with completion on target for 2028.

In collaboration with Morgan Sindall Construction, the project’s restoration is being delivered alongside the main architect, Faulkner Brown, who are leading on the leisure refurbishment. Joining them are sports masterplan specialists WOO Architects – part of the creatives team behind both the London and Paris Olympics, Max Fordham for decarbonisation and sustainability and Alan Baxter Associates, whose focus is on conserving the site’s impressive structural heritage.

Morgan Sindall will combat the main building’s current environmental and acoustic contamination by constructing a new glazed screen amongst the heritage elements of the building to control the challenging environmental conditions between wet and dry leisure activities. Not only will this allow for visitors and participants alike to enjoy a more comfortable atmosphere, it will also prove advantageous during concurrent swimming galas and competitions in the sports halls to avoid an

overwhelming transfer of noise.

Morgan Sindall is re-developing all pools on site including the 50m competition pool, the dive pool and the 25m pool. As part of this programme, the project team will also refurbish and reinstall the iconic diving tower, setting the stage for the diving pool to make a splash once again.

Energy Efficiency Changes Made To North Somerset Swimming Pools

Swimming pools across North Somerset are benefiting from energy efficiency improvements in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.

These include a first phase of improvements that have been completed at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston-super-Mare. Fully funded from Sport England’s Swimming Pool Support Fund, brand-new electric solar (PV) systems have been installed which are estimated to save over 28 tonnes of carbon a year.

The second phase of works at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre have also started following a successful application to the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS).

The grant of £2,244,518, will be used to replace the six gas-powered boilers with air source heat pumps, removing any reliance on gas to heat the centre’s leisure facilities, which includes two swimming pools. The grant will also be used to upgrade the insulation throughout the building and replace radiators to make the building more efficient.

These works also follow £1.7m of investment by the council for urgent works to replace a substantial area of roof, poolside air-handling units, water storage tanks and the passenger lift.

Portishead Open Air Pool has nearly completed the installation of a PV system and solar thermal power to the site, which will use solar power to heat the water and make a large impact on the energy usage of the facility. The funding, from Sport England, was secured by North Somerset Council on the pool’s behalf.

The Council has also secured further funding from the Swimming Pool Support Fund for Strode Leisure Centre in Clevedon to provide covers for the two swimming pools and install a new energy efficient backwash system for the swimming pools. This system is one of a few across England that Sport England are funding to understand the benefits of this new technology. This new system is estimated to provide a yearly energy saving of 31,758kWh along with 1357.2m3 of supply water.

IN BRIEF

COUNCIL APPOINTS OPERATOR FOR NEW LEISURE CENTRE

Hillingdon Council has announced that its new Platinum Jubilee Leisure Centre in West Drayton will be managed by Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), meaning a continuation of its partnership with the experienced operator while expanding the borough’s sports and leisure offer.

GLL will run the facility in partnership with the council until at least 2035, ensuring a single operator for all councilowned swimming pools and leisure centres in the borough.

The company currently manages Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Centre, Highgrove Pool and Fitness Centre, Botwell Green Sports and Leisure Centre and Queensmead Sports Centre.

The new state-of-the-art leisure facility will open this autumn and feature a 25-metre swimming pool, teaching pool, splash pad with flume, plus numerous other dry leisure facilities.

COUNCIL SECURES

£1.2M GRANT FOR POOL’S AGING BOILERS

Tendring District Council in Essex has secured a major £1.2m grant to overhaul Clacton Leisure Centre’s ageing oil-fired boilers with a modern, energy-efficient system.

The swimming pool at the council-run facility is set to undergo the eco-friendly upgrade thanks to a successful bid for UK Government funding.

Following the failure of one of the two antiquated boilers serving the pool and changing rooms, the council sought external funding to ensure that the popular facility remains operational.

The authority has now officially accepted a grant of more than £1.2m – towards the cost of the £1.36million project – from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. The scheme is run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and delivered by Salix to support the public sector to reduce carbon emissions in line with the UK’s 2050 net zero target.

Ustigate Waterplay To Deliver New Facility In Rotherham

Ustigate Waterplay are delighted to be working with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council on a new water play facility that will be established at Clifton Park in Rotherham for the 2025 season.

The design includes a paddling pool and two inclusive splash pads with a selection of Vortex products to entertain every age group.

The water management system is a PWTAG compliant recirculation system with two separate tanks; one for the water return and one for the clean water, after treatment. This system enables multiple water features because one body of water is recycled for play.

On splash pad one, water play beginners will find their perfect place at their perfect pace. There are gentle ground sprays and a blend of low level, above-ground products that provide misting effects, spinning and splashing orbs and a close-up experience with water. There are a variety of innovative technologies that invite children to interact with the products such as Twistnozzle™

where children can change the water direction plus Twirltec™ where children can rotate the feature a full 360° resulting in pretty, spiralling water patterns. There is also a clever, selfspinning Helico Nano and a variety of different sized tipping buckets including the award winning Twinsplash that presents with double the fun and double the splash!

Splash pad two is a grand finale for all of Clifton Park’s thrill seekers; featuring Ustigate’s largest tipping bucket, a

Supersplash No.2 ready to soak a crowd at every tip and a selfspinning Helio No.6 that offers gentle splashes from above.

Clifton Park has been a great team effort combined with progressive thinking by Ustigate and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and they are excited to bring this project by their award-winning design team to life!

Iconic Maple Leaf Paddling Pool

Reopens After Transformation

A popular family attraction in Sutton-on-Sea in Lincolnshire has reopened following extensive refurbishment and improvement works delivered by Alliance Leisure for East Lindsey District Council.

Located on the seafront, the Maple Leaf Paddling Pool was gifted to the town by the Canadians following the 1953 Sutton-on-Sea floods. It is one of three free public paddling pools operated by the council.

Alliance Leisure led a team of specialists, including Universal Group (principal contractor) and Axiom (project manager) to refurbish and

upgrade the much-loved attraction. The project includes the installation of new infrastructure, such as new pool filtration and circulation systems, UV-resistant safety surfacing as well as a standalone plant room housing modern mechanical and electrical systems.

New interactive water play features will offer a variety of fun and engaging activities for children of all ages to enjoy.

Seb Rowe, Delivery Manager at Alliance Leisure, said: “The Maple Leaf Paddling Pool is a popular and unique landmark in Sutton-on-Sea. This much-needed refurbishment and upgrade will ensure that generations of local families can continue to make memories and enjoy free fun long into the future.”

The project was delivered through the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd and forms part of the wider regeneration of Sutton-on-Sea.

The paddling pool project has been supported by a grant from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Rural England Prosperity Fund, distributed by East Lindsey District Council, as part of its commitment to investing in heritage assets and the creation of local visitor attractions.

Monmouth Pool Looks Forward To A Cleaner, Greener Future

When Monmouthshire County Council set out to modernise its leisure facilities with a focus on sustainability, cost-saving and operational efficiency, one challenge was replacing an outdated granular calcium hypochlorite dosing system at one of their 25m municipal pools.

Sterling Hydrotech, one of the UK’s most trusted pool filtration and water treatment specialists, recommended Gaffey’s Hyprolyser® iSEC®-3, a next-generation electrochlorination system.

The result was a cleaner, safer and more efficient plant room, leading to an expanded contract for Sterling Hydrotech to upgrade three more local authority swimming pools and manage ongoing maintenance.

The old system relied on granular calcium hypochlorite, which posed several challenges including hazardous handling and storage, chemical transportation costs and unreliable dosing.

Sterling Hydrotech installed Gaffey’s Hyprolyser® iSEC®-3, a British-made, low-carbon water treatment system. Its Adaptive Response Technology (ART) automatically adjusts to changing environmental and site-specific conditions for consistent chlorine generation.

The result was a win for staff, swimmers and sustainability. The plant room became safer with no chlorine fumes and a new spacious and ergonomic layout. Water quality improved with reliable disinfection. Financial and environmental savings followed through reduced chemical costs and lower carbon emissions.

The project was part-funded

by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

With £80k secured, the council invested in new pipework, electrical upgrades and low-carbon technology, to create a healthier environment for staff and swimmers.

Monmouthshire Council’s upgrade proves that sustainability and efficiency go hand-in-hand.

By choosing Hyprolyser® iSEC®-3, they’ve now future-proofed four of their facilities to deliver safer swimming, lower costs and a reduced carbon footprint.

At a recent Development Committee, Councillors in Norfolk have voted for planning permission for the proposed extension and improvement of Fakenham Sports and Fitness Centre.

The Council submitted a Levelling Up bid in 2022 for improvements to Fakenham Leisure Centre which is owned by the District Council and operated by award-winning leisure partners Everyone Active. Improvements included a four lane, 25 metre swimming pool along with numerous other enhanced facilities.

Cllr. Tim Adams, Leader of North Norfolk District Council said: “This is a significant milestone towards the provision of modern swimming and leisure facilities in the growing town of Fakenham, and we continue to be grateful for the support of the community and Fakenham Town Council that has got us this far. Subject to the approval of the planning application, we look forward to beginning this development later in the year.”

The bid for Levelling Up Fund monies was submitted by North Norfolk District Council with support from Fakenham Town Council, MPs for the Broadland and North Norfolk constituencies, and there has been public support for a larger leisure offering in the town, with local consultation yielding over 1,000 responses.

Many residents have campaigned for a new pool facility for Fakenham, following the closure of the Fakenham Academy pool in 2014.

The project will utilise a range of strategies to minimise the environmental impact of the scheme, including the use of air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels.

Pace Of Swimming Pool Closures Increasing Warn Swim England And ukactive Planning Permission Granted For Fakenham Sports And Fitness Centre

New analysis has revealed that 76% of the publicly accessible water space lost in the past 15 years has disappeared since 2020, highlighting the escalating crisis facing the sector.

With increasing financial pressures, ageing facilities and rising operational costs, many more pools and leisure centres are at risk of closure, leaving communities without vital spaces for physical activity and social connection.

ukactive and Swim England are urging the Government to provide support for swimming pools and leisure centres as part of the

upcoming Comprehensive Spending Review and place them at the heart of efforts to support economic growth by reducing the burden of ill health.

The bodies are calling for the Government to provide a comprehensive strategy for the future of gyms, swimming pools and leisure centres, that supports their renewal and growth so they can play their fullest role in boosting the economy and reducing health inequalities.

With ill health estimated to cost the UK economy around £150 billion a year, the case for action has never been clearer.

Without targeted support however, the loss of water space across the UK will likely continue to accelerate, further impacting public health, wellbeing and local economies as people struggle to access.

500 swimming pools have been lost since 2010, totalling a massive 34,859 sq metres of water space. Of all the pools lost in that time, almost half (42%) have been lost since 2020.

Additionally, of the ten local authorities who have seen the biggest decline in pool space, 70% have higher than average indices of multiple deprivation, risking exacerbating already stark health inequalities.

Alliance Leisure Adds Industry

Heavyweights Tara Dillon And David Stalker To Board

Operator Alliance Leisure are thrilled to welcome Tara Dillon and David Stalker as Non-Executive Directors, strengthening the board with two of the most respected, forward-thinking and well known leaders in the leisure sector. These appointments reflect an ongoing commitment to innovation, excellence and community impact.

A former Executive Director of IQL – the trading arm of the Royal Lifesaving Society – Tara Dillon is widely recognised for her influential leadership at CIMSPA (the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity) and unrivalled expertise in driving up professional standards and spearheading workforce development. Tara received the prestigious Jan Spaticchia Special Recognition Award last year in honour of her outstanding contribution to the sector. Her

strategic insight will help shape Alliance Leisure’s people-first approach and drive the next phase of service excellence.

David Stalker is a lifelong advocate for physical activity and an investor and advisor to businesses across the sector. He brings extensive leadership as well as operational and strategic experience to the board. As the former President of EuropeActive, he has consistently championed the role of leisure in transforming lives and strengthening communities.

Sarah Watts, CEO of Alliance Leisure, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Tara and David are joining our board. Their credibility, experience and passion will be extremely valuable as we continue to deliver our strategy, grow the business and cement our position as the UK’s leading leisure development partner to local authorities.”

Future Fit And RLSS UK Launch Strategic Partnership To Strengthen Career Pathways

Future Fit and the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) have joined forces to offer exciting career development opportunities for lifeguards, helping to retain vital talent in the physical activity sector for longer.

As the leading training provider for health, fitness and wellbeing professionals in the UK, Future Fit brings decades of experience in developing long-term career pathways in the physical activity sector. This partnership extends that vision to thousands of lifeguards seeking to build meaningful, multi-disciplinary careers.

High staff turnover remains one of the most pressing challenges for the industry, leading to increased recruitment, training and mentoring costs. The problem is particularly acute for lifeguards. RLSS UK qualifies more than 40,000 lifeguards a year, yet data shows that most remain in their role for just two to three years. Many people take on lifeguarding as a temporary job while studying or exploring career options, often leaving the sector without realising the variety of long-term roles available beyond lifeguarding in fitness, wellbeing and management.

To help reduce lifeguard attrition, RLSS UK has partnered with Future Fit, the UK’s leading health, wellbeing and personal trainer courses provider, to upskill lifeguards with affordable, accessible, high-quality training. The initiative will open the doors to the broader career opportunities available for lifeguards, helping to keep them working in the leisure industry longer.

Read more about this partnership on the SPN website.

Paul Webb Takes On Role Of SPATA Chair For Thames Valley

SPATA have advised that Paul Webb, Director at Oxfordshire-based Fairlocks Pool Products, has taken over the role of Chairperson for the region. Born and bred in Oxford (and a proud Oxford Utd supporter), Paul joined the PG Group, (later to become Certikin) back in January 1990, and having spent many happy years at the business where he worked in several departments, he set up Fairlocks Pool Products in 2006 with good friend and business partner Julian Hunnable. Since its founding, the company has offered many specialist products to the UK pool trade, and its current line up includes products such as Covrex automatic pool covers, LPW one-piece pools, HIDE swimming pool skimmer covers, WaterTec

LED underwater lighting, plus much more. Having now spent many enjoyable years within the wet leisure sector, Paul’s interest in taking on the role of Thames Valley Chair is to try and give something back to the industry.

The Thames Valley region – which in SPATA’s case actually covers a much wider area than you would think – contains a large number of members that can potentially work together, and Paul’s aim is to represent the views of members. Therefore, he welcomes any comments as to how SPATA can help these wet leisure businesses and is in the process of arranging his first regional meeting of his tenure and looks forward to meeting SPATA members from across the region.

Aqua Technics Pools

art Material With A Galactic Lifespan!

At the end of 2024, Aqua Technics Pools introduced Basalt fibre rods into the exclusive edge beams of their pool range, replacing the steel ones formerly utilised.

As well as being two and a half times stronger than steel, the material is also four and a half times lighter, plus it’s corrosion-proof too! The change provides even greater rigidity and deflection-resistance to Aqua Technics’ already well-established and hard to match product strength and durability, while making finished pools lighter for transport and handling.

Basalt (as any geography student will remember) is a volcanic rock, from which the Basalt fibres are made. But just how strong and durable is this state-of-the-art material?

Well, the distinguished astrophysicist and broadcaster Prof Neil DeGrasse Tyson talked about them in a recent podcast. In it he explained how the American flags planted on the Moon during the Apollo missions of the late 60s and early 70s, which were made from conventional fabric materials available back then, have since been ravaged by the brutal effects of the Sun’s

radiation which blast the surface of the Moon at full intensity as there is no atmosphere to reflect them or filter them out.

The Chinese are planning a manned Moon mission of their own in the coming years, and will protect their flags against the long-term effects of the Sun’s rays by making them from a fabric woven from threads of Basalt fibres. Prof Tyson goes on to say in his podcast that, providing they don’t get hit by an asteroid, or somebody (or something!) doesn’t interfere with them, the use of Basalt fibres will mean they will last for a billion years – that’s a seriously impressive stat!

Power, Efficiency And Durability: BADU Resort Pumps From AstralPool UK

True to its name, the easy to maintain Badu Resort’s areas of expertise are hotels, resorts and health clubs with large pools and attractions such as fountains and waterfalls as well as large private pools. Traditionally, these applications are usually served by expensive, heavy-duty bronze and cast-iron pumps. Thanks to the state-of-the-art reinforced fibreglass plastic of the BADU Resort, investment costs are dramatically reduced without affecting the pump’s prolonged life and superior performance.

This monoblock-type pump has an integrated strainer tank. The bellow-type mechanical seal is maintenance free and mounted on a plastic shaft protector sleeve. This means the motor/pump shaft has no contact with the pool water for total electrical separation. The pump can be installed a maximum 3m above or below water level and is available in a wide range of sizes to meet most flow rates.

Now available in the UK from AstralPool, this pump offers a powerful, efficient and low maintenance solution for demanding aquatic environments.

BIOLAB DECIDES NOT TO REBUILD CHLORINE PLANT

With a history of explosions, chemical fires and toxic clouds that have drifted over surrounding neighbourhoods, BioLab Inc. has decided not to rebuild its main manufacturing facility in Conyers, located near Atlanta in Georgia.

In a statement, the US firm said it has been unable to resume manufacturing operations after the most recent catastrophe on 29 September 2024.

“After taking steps to meet customer needs through alternative production, and in considering our future business needs carefully, we have made the difficult decision not to restart manufacturing at the Conyers plant,” said a spokesperson.

Though manufacturing won’t restart, the company’s Conyers distribution centre will remain operational and fill customer orders for products from other BioLab facilities.

The September fire sent a huge plume of smoke into the Georgia sky, forcing nearby residents to shelter plus the closure of a major interstate.

BIO-UV Group Scales New Heights In Dubai Pool Projects

BIO-UV Group has reinforced its position at the forefront of complex civil engineering projects with the successful installation of ozone and UV treatment systems for two of the UAE’s most prestigious and technically demanding swimming pool installations.

In partnership with an international water solutions provider, the company supplied and commissioned its advanced ozone generator technology at a world-record-setting diving pool.

BIO-UV Group, based in Lunel, France, was selected not only for the water treatment capability of its equipment but also for its capacity to support full project commissioning on site.

The pool, one of the most ambitious projects of its kind ever undertaken, will see some 14 million litres of freshwater treated by the BIO-UV system.

“The installation exemplifies BIO-UV Group’s ability to contribute to major engineering projects where water quality and safety are paramount,” said Simon Marshall, Deputy General Manager of BIO-UV Group and Managing Director of Triogen.

“The pool’s sheer scale demanded the highest standards in water purification and system resilience. Working closely with our partners, we have installed the most robust, environmentally safe disinfection system to the world’s deepest swimming pool.”

A second, equally impressive project has seen BIO-UV Group collaborate with one of the oldest companies in the United Arab Emirates specialising in the design, installation and maintenance of swimming pools and water features.

BIO-UV Group’s cutting-edge UV treatment system was selected to maintain water quality in a gravity-defying infinity pool perched atop one of Dubai’s most iconic towers.

The UV system was chosen for its proven ability to eliminate chloramines, a known irritant in treated pool water, and to improve air and water quality in enclosed or elevated pool environments. Installed in close collaboration, the solution underscores BIO-UV Group’s capacity to align with regional partners on highly complex, premium-grade projects.

Every year at this time, we dedicate a page in the magazine to promote Drowning Prevention Week in the UK (and also World Drowning Prevention Day, which is on 25 July). While there thankfully remain very few deaths in pools and hot tubs, every drowning is a tragedy. We can therefore still play an important role in promoting safety, raising awareness of being near water, and advocating for learning to swim. See page 33. With huge thanks to the tireless work of members of the technical committees for BISHTA and SPATA, with invaluable help from representatives from PWTAG, and the wider industry, there is now some muchneeded industry guidance for products that use cold water immersion. The guidance is freely available, with information aimed at the trade and some at (domestic) consumers. Readers are reminded that there is also an excellent PWTAG Technical Note (71) on Ice Baths in business and commercial settings. There is exciting news regarding promoting workplace fairness through the industry working group on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). With immense thanks to Dash Ganeson’s leadership and support from Patrick Thorpe, donations have been pledged to start a GoFundMe page to promote EDI courses. The page is hoped to be live this summer, with a view to arranging courses from the autumn onwards. Regarding EDI, please see page 31 from our colleagues Wright Hassall.

An Industry That Is Constantly Evolving

BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights some of the industry initiatives being worked on that are making the wet leisure sector a more professional and safer environment for all

15 October. Discussions are ongoing about the location for this in-person event, which will have updates on industry standards and exciting news about the rebranding that is happening for BISHTA and SPATA. The day will also include the AGM, a chance for members to provide feedback to help BISHTA further improve its services. Please look for more details about the sessions and speakers via the weekly members’ e-newsletters.

Training is an essential element of the work of BISHTA and SPATA throughout the year, not only at the annual conference. This can be done through webinars on specialist topics such as trading standards, insurance and legal matters. For SPATA members, it also comes in the form of regional meetings, which were mainly held online, with the notable exception of the East Anglia region, which was held at Delta Membrane Systems’ premises in Essex. John Scott organised the event to deepen the members’ understanding of the products available from Delta Membrane Systems to help with leaks.

Thanks to Will Dando at Plastica’s tenacity, an Excel calculator tool is now available to help members meet the requirements laid out in the European standard for domestic outdoor pools: EN 17645, ‘Environmental performance efficiency – Performance evaluation, methodology, and classification of the use of pools and their equipment’. A training session will be provided on this calculator later this year.

Huge congratulations to the winners of the SPATA and BISHTA awards 2025, some of whom have been shortlisted for the relevant categories of the 2025 EUSA Awards, which will be announced at Piscina Barcelona on Wednesday 19 November. Full details of the UK entries will appear in the next issue of SPN.

During the Piscina Barcelona show (on

Thursday 20 November 25), WAPSA will also have an opportunity to host its ninth annual meeting. This is the third time that Spain has hosted this meeting, and the topics will include updates from the five subgroups, market data, education, environment, marketing and Association benchmarking.

The SPATA and BISHTA categories and entry criteria for the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards 2026 will be out by the end of this month. Thank you to the sponsors of these awards; please get in touch with the office if you are a member and want to learn more about the available sponsorship opportunities.

A Vital Leap Forward For Cold Water Immersion

In this issue, Sallie Leslie-Golding – PR & Marketing Manager at BISHTA and SPATA, details how industry guidance on cold water immersion, produced using a truly collaborative process, is supporting the UK’s wet leisure sector

The wet leisure industry faces a pivotal moment as cold water immersion (CWI) gains increasing popularity, not only in commercial (and some business) settings, but also in domestic settings.

The rise in popularity of products such as cold tubs, plunge pools and ice baths has created a pressing need for structured, evidence-based guidance to ensure safety and hygiene, just as the industry has provided guidance for the hot tub part of the sector. In response, BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association) and SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association), backed by an industry-wide working group of members and non-members, have led the development of CWI guidance for the sector, which will evolve over time, as more evidence comes to light.

The working group have provided much-needed clarity for manufacturers, retailers, service providers and operators, offering practical tools to support the safe and successful implementation of CWI. Retailers and professionals now have a defined framework for educating customers, supporting both new and existing users with confidence and consistency.

This guidance supports best practice aligned with the Health and Safety Executive’s HSG 282 and PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) recommendations for commercial operators, such as gyms, wellness centres, spas, holiday parks and rehabilitation clinics. It equips businesses to implement CWI effectively, enhancing client safety, wellbeing and satisfaction.

Although cold water immersion is not new, its growing use in controlled environments, from leisure centres to private homes, brings heightened responsibilities. While hot tubs and warm water immersion benefit from decades of regulatory insight, the cold-water sector has so far lacked the equivalent standards. The new CWI-Industry Guidance fills this gap, drawing on BISHTA’s and SPATA’s experience with warm water practices and integrating expert input from PWTAG

and other stakeholders. It addresses key CWI-specific issues, including cold shock response, water hygiene at low temperatures and safe immersion duration.

A significant strength of the guidance is its accessibility across the supply chain. It clearly defines two product categories:

• Cold Water Immersion Baths, which are emptied after each use

• Cold Water Immersion Spas, which retain water over more extended periods.

This distinction ensures clarity in applying appropriate water treatment, sanitation and user protocols.

Water hygiene is a significant focus. The guidance outlines suitable sanitisers (e.g. chlorine or bromine) for lower temperatures, addressing concerns like solubility, pH balance and compatibility with UV or ozone systems. It promotes reliable testing methods, recommending photometers or comparators over test strips, which can be inaccurate in cold conditions.

While CWI offers a range of benefits –improved circulation, muscle recovery and mental wellbeing – these are only achievable when risks are well managed. Without proper regulation, users could face dangers such as cold shock, drowning, or complications from pre-existing medical conditions.

To counter these risks, the guidance advises on:

• Pre-screening participants

• Maintaining safe water temperatures

• Supervising use in commercial settings.

It recommends immersion durations of under ten minutes, especially for beginners and even lower bathing durations in water below 10°C, focusing on gradual acclimatisation. The guidance also warns against unsupervised use, especially when under the influence or when alone. Importantly, it advises that CWI is generally unsuitable for children under 16 unless under medical supervision, due to their immature thermoregulatory systems.

What truly distinguishes this guidance is

The release of this guidance marks a turning point, providing a unified standard for manufacturers, suppliers and operators”

the collaborative process behind it. BISHTA and SPATA invited contributions from their technical committees, as well as non-member manufacturers and professionals across the UK wet leisure industry, with research-based guidance from Coventry University. The result is a document grounded in practical experience and scientific insight, reflecting the sector’s real-world needs and challenges.

Already, this initiative has led to the publication of a dedicated BISHTA consumer factsheet (C43) and supported PWTAG’s finalisation of Technical Note 71 on Ice Baths – two valuable tools for the wider community. BISHTA and SPATA have provided their members with a factsheet (M1149 and M149, respectively), which is also available free of charge to non-members. As CWI becomes embedded in modern wellness routines, the industry must ensure its safe, sustainable and professional use. The release of this guidance marks a turning point, providing a unified standard for manufacturers, suppliers and operators. It gives the sector a unique selling point: the language, reassurance and protocols needed to communicate value and safety to trade and end users alike.

Further industry feedback will continue to shape and refine the guidance, but its current version already sets a new benchmark. It empowers the wet leisure industry to support CWI responsibly, fostering consumer confidence and ensuring the practice thrives smart, safe and sustainably. Most importantly, to help the industry, BISHTA and SPATA have made this valuable industry guidance available freely on their websites under their ‘Trade’ resources and information.

Special thanks go to the CWI industry-wide working group, whose shared expertise and collaboration have been vital in developing this essential guidance to strengthen and support the wet leisure sector. A list of contributors can be found on the BISHTA and SPATA websites.

When Banter Crosses The Line

of Employment Law at Wright Hassall and

of Workplace Bullying Day looks at the subject of banter in construction environments and when it crosses the line, how to tackle bullying

Construction – it’s not the easiest of jobs and sometimes a bit of harmless banter between colleagues can help ease the pressure of tight deadlines, long days and tough physical work. However, while many workplaces brush off behaviours like abrupt emails, isolation, or offensive jokes as a “bit of fun”, the reality is that these can easily cross the line into bullying – and it’s crucial we recognise that.

Our recent research at Wright Hassall shows just how concerning this issue is. We surveyed over 1,000 UK employees: over 50% had left or considered leaving due to bullying – rising to 60% for women.

Whether you are male or female, it’s important to understand that bullying takes many forms. According to our survey, one in four people reported being undermined or having their work undermined, while almost a quarter had received unfair criticism or blame.

Notably, 22% had faced abrupt or aggressive emails, with women more likely than men to report this. Offensive jokes (16%), verbal abuse (13%), exclusion (13%) and the spreading of false rumours (13%) were also common. Bullying can take many forms – and often goes unrecognised.

In construction – a sector traditionally seen as “alpha male” – some may even dismiss offensive humour or harsh criticism as part of the job. But let’s be clear: these behaviours are bullying – and could trigger legal action. Employers have a duty to challenge these patterns, not accept them as part of the culture.

WHY MOST VICTIMS STAY SILENT

One of the most concerning findings from our research is that 72% of employees who experienced bullying never reported it – often due to fear that nothing would change or that the situation would worsen. What’s particularly sad is that while men don’t typically raise issues, when they do, they often experience the situation being ignored or made worse. This worrying finding indicates that workplaces need to do more for everyone, not just the most obvious victims.

Age plays a role, too. It’s unlikely that older age groups have simply experienced less bullying. What’s more likely is that younger people today are more aware of what workplace bullying actually is and are more willing to name it for what it is.

STEPS CONSTRUCTION EMPLOYERS MUST TAKE

So how can construction businesses ensure that workplace banter doesn’t cross the line

into bullying? I recommend five clear steps:

1. Have a clear, effective policy: Start with a clear, comprehensive anti-bullying policy that defines what constitutes bullying and applies to everyone – no exceptions. Employers must leave no wriggle room for claims of ignorance.

2. Provide regular training: Education is key. Employers should offer regular training sessions and workshops for both employees and managers, so they can confidently recognise and address bullying behaviours. Everyone must understand how to report incidents confidentially and know their rights and responsibilities.

3. Create safe reporting processes: A crucial element is providing multiple, confidential reporting channels – whether via HR, an online platform, or a hotline. Employees must trust reports will be confidential and fairly investigated, regardless of the seniority of those involved.

4. Lead by example: Positive workplace culture starts at the top. Senior managers must lead with inclusive, respectful behaviour and encourage open communication, making it easier for employees to speak up without fear of retaliation.

5. Continuously improve: Preventing workplace bullying isn’t a one-off task. Companies should regularly seek employee feedback, through surveys or focus groups, to identify potential hotspots and assess how well current measures are working. This allows

businesses to fine-tune their approach and build a stronger culture over time.

ADAPTING TO HYBRID WORK ENVIRONMENTS

With hybrid work increasingly common, even in sectors like construction, the challenges evolve. Employers need to be alert and proactive, treating virtual bullying with the same zero-tolerance approach as they would in-person incidents. This includes ensuring robust IT and communication policies, offering regular team-building opportunities and helping employees set boundaries when working remotely.

CHANGING THE CULTURE FOR GOOD

Ultimately, culture is the key. While training and policies are vital, organisations must also cultivate a workplace where people understand what bullying looks like and feel empowered to speak out. A positive culture reduces the risk of bullying and ensures swift, fair action when incidents do occur.

Creating that culture starts with leadership. Senior teams set the tone for the entire organisation – and by championing respect and accountability, they can help drive lasting, positive change across the construction industry.

Weather Cover Solutions For Pool Construction

In this issue, we take a closer look at West Sussexbased Shiner Marquees, a family-run business that has built a reputation among SPATA members for reliability, adaptability and consistently high standards when providing weather cover solutions

In the world of swimming pool construction, where quality craftsmanship meets high client expectations, weather can be one of the most unpredictable and disruptive forces. Rain, wind, snow and freezing temperatures can quickly derail schedules, increase costs and frustrate even the most experienced teams.

That’s why an increasing number of SPATA pool builders are turning to weather cover solutions – temporary structures that provide weatherproof protection, enabling uninterrupted progress and creating safer, cleaner and more efficient worksites.

WEATHERPROOFING THAT KEEPS PROJECTS MOVING

The key benefit of weather cover solutions is simple but powerful: they allow staff to keep working, regardless of weather. Whether it’s wind up to 70mph, heavy rain, snow, or cold snaps, the covered space keeps both people and materials dry, protected and productive.

This dramatically reduces costly downtime and project delays – especially in winter months when poor weather can stretch a 6-week job into a 3-month one. It also means build timelines become more reliable, allowing for smoother client experiences and better scheduling across teams.

LONGER WORKING DAYS AND STABLE TEMPERATURES

Short daylight hours are no longer a limitation. With a covered structure, you can install lighting and, if needed, heating systems to create a controlled working environment that’s safe, warm and usable from early morning to late afternoon.

Temperature stability also supports the technical side of construction, particularly during concrete pouring or adhesive setting stages where fluctuations can impact finish quality. Maintaining a consistent environment improves the integrity of your build and

Covered builds not only keep schedules on track – they make work look good”

reduces remedial work.

A CLEANER, SAFER AND MORE PROFESSIONAL SITE

Beyond the obvious weather benefits, these covers create a tidier and more professional site, reflecting positively on your company. They reduce the spread of dirt and debris, offer shelter from noise and dust pollution and provide privacy for projects in residential areas.

On the safety front, slippery conditions and icy patches are kept at bay. Protective flooring and edge safeguards can be added, ensuring both your workforce and the surrounding surfaces are protected throughout every phase of the job.

ADDED SECURITY AND ON SITE STORAGE

Weather cover solutions naturally create a secure zone for tools, materials and machinery. This not only helps deter theft but protects valuable equipment from the elements – ideal for longer projects with intermittent work stages.

It also means less time spent each day unloading or drying equipment and materials. Your team can focus on the job itself, knowing everything is ready, dry and within easy reach.

FLEXIBLE, FAST AND SITEADAPTABLE

Every pool build is different, which is why weather cover solutions are tailored in width and length to fit virtually any site – from private garden pools to large commercial installations. Sizes typically range from 4.5m to 12m wide, with lengths up to 30m. Quick to install and easy to adapt as the project evolves, these solutions offer flexibility at every stage – including re-fitting if work progresses in phases. Protection for delicate landscaping is also built in, with foam or ply safeguarding surfaces as standard.

QUIETLY ELEVATING REPUTATIONS

Clients notice when a build is professional, organised and efficient. Covered builds not only keep schedules on track – they

make work look good. And that translates to positive word of mouth, glowing testimonials and more referrals.

Happy customers become a company’s best sales team. By delivering a dry, tidy, well-managed project from start to finish –regardless of weather – you raise the standard and increase the likelihood of future work through reputation alone.

PROVIDED BY A TEAM WHO UNDERSTAND POOL BUILDING

The team behind these weather cover solutions is Shiner Marquees, a friendly, family-run business based in West Sussex. Led by founder Stephen Shiner and joined by his two sons, Sam and Barnaby, the team brings together decades of experience and a strong commitment to quality. With more than five years specialising in pool construction sites, they’ve built a reputation among SPATA members for reliability, adaptability and consistently high standards. From the first conversation to final removal, they work around schedules and tailor every detail to each build. Hire durations extend up to six months and projects within a 60-mile radius are fully covered. For longer distances, modest travel charges apply.

Emergency support, last-minute changes and mid-project reconfigurations are never an issue – the team is always just a call away and always keen to help keep things on track.

National Water Safety Forum Invites The Leisure Sector To ‘Find Their Float’ For World Drowning Prevention Day

If someone gets into trouble in the water, knowing how to float can save their life. On 25 July, the National Water Safety Forum invites everyone to ‘find their float’ by practising this vital lifesaving skill

Worldwide, 10.5 million years of life are tragically lost each year to drowning. In the UK, the corresponding figure is over 6,000, with many more lives changed permanently due to this preventable public health issue.

World Drowning Prevention Day is held annually on 25 July. Established by the World Health Organization in 2021, it is a global advocacy event that aims to highlight the devastating impact of drowning on families, individuals and communities and the lifesaving interventions that prevent it.

To mark World Drowning Prevention Day’s fifth year, the National Water Safety Forum (NWSF) is inviting organisations across the leisure sector to come together to support a coordinated public safety campaign that raises awareness of a vital lifesaving skill: how to float.

Floating is a science-backed self-rescue technique; knowing how to float can save someone’s life if they ever get into difficulty in the water. However, not everybody floats in the same way – all bodies are different, so how we float can also look different. The aim of the NWSF’s campaign is to encourage people to practice what floating feels like for them, so they will know what to do if they find themselves in an emergency situation.

To do this, people across the UK will be encouraged to attend organised ‘Find Your Float’ events on World Drowning Prevention Day, or in the weeks leading up to it. Taking place at supervised swimming locations and hosted by NWSF members, partners and leisure providers, these events will allow people of all ages to practise floating in a safe, supported environment.

Crucially, trained water safety practitioners –such as lifeguards and swimming teachers – will be on hand to give advice on how to float and other self- and bystander-rescue techniques. Organisers will be encouraged to capture images and footage of their event to share on social media. An accompanying digital campaign of educational how to float videos and resources will also run throughout July.

The NWSF are encouraging wet leisure providers to join the campaign, either by running their own ‘Find Your Float’ events or by building the campaign messages into existing events and activities. Full guidance and resources will be provided for those

interested in taking part.

This large-scale, collaborative campaign has potential for a significant positive impact for the public and the wet leisure sector. For families and individuals, it provides an enjoyable, memorable activity that simultaneously raises awareness of vital water safety skills. For leisure providers, it provides another route for communities to interact with their services and helps to empower people to engage with water-based activities, both on World Drowning Prevention Day and beyond.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Wet leisure providers can join the ‘Find Your Float’ campaign either by organising their own event, including a float activity as part of existing events, or sharing the campaign’s message with their customers and networks.

For guidance, resources and more details of how to get involved, visit the NWSF’s ‘Respect The Water’ website: respectthewater.com

SPATEX’s Industry Funding Now Tops An Impressive £2m!

With SPATEX returning to the Coventry Building Society Arena and celebrating a special 30th anniversary edition next year,

we take a closer look at the wider importance of the industry’s annual trade show

As its milestone 30th anniversary hoves into view in February 2026, SPATEX has announced that its reinvestment of the profits from the exhibition into the UK’s water leisure industry have now topped a staggering £2m. Further underlining the fundamental importance of the annual event, the SPATEX Foundation has pledged funding for two exciting new initiatives that promise to benefit all that work in the industry.

SPATEX Managing Director, Chris Hayes, said: “The show is wholly owned by the industry, so the profits are reinvested to ensure that we can help key organisations, such as the ISPE, BSPF, PIP, SPATA and BISHTA. The SPATEX Foundation was established with the objective of funding an even wider number of organisations and companies, for purposes such as education and standards, so that the value of the profits can be spread even further. We welcome applications at any time via the form on the SPATEX website.”

Moving with the times, whilst helping the greater good, are central to SPATEX’s aims, so it is fitting that the Foundation has recently announced funding for research into a trending topic, namely the potential benefits and risks of ice bath therapy. This has recently attracted interest and popularity across both domestic and commercial settings. The rise of products such as cold tubs, plunge pools and ice baths has created a pressing need for evidence-based research.

The claims of mental health and wellbeing benefits are to date largely anecdotal and lack empirical evidence. Conversely, there are rare occasions where adverse events and even deaths have been reported. The recipient of the funding is the Centre for Physical Activity, Sport & Exercise Sciences at Coventry University, which is conducting a research study that will deliver detailed user information to the wet leisure industry on its health-related benefits and health and safety considerations. The data collected has potential for product development and evidence-based marketing content, which will enhance domestic sales and commercial use.

With coincidental symmetry, the SPATEX Foundation has also announced funding for research into the benefits of warm water immersion on Type 2 Diabetes by Dr Ant

2026 IS SET TO BE A PEARL OF A SHOW!

Meanwhile, all eyes are on preparations for the celebratory 30th anniversary SPATEX 2026 show. Organiser, Michele Bridle said: “Planning has already begun in earnest for the anniversary edition, when the Coventry Building Society Arena will, from 3 to 5 February, be a water leisure extravaganza. Such is the demand for exhibition space, we have adapted our floorplan to accommodate more stands and provide for the biggest and boldest show in our 30-year history.

“We are excited to unveil the exciting new design for our 30th edition. It speaks to our past and looks to our future, as we take the next steps in our journey to grow the exhibition to meet the needs of our exhibitors and visitors. Please visit our website and sign up for our monthly newslines to keep abreast of further announcements as they happen.

“SPATEX is a fundamental, ‘must-attend’ part of the annual business calendar, designed to keep buyers and sellers abreast of what is happening in the UK water leisure industry and beyond.”

The show is wholly owned by the industry, so the profits are reinvested to ensure that we can help key organisations”

Shepherd – Associate Professor in Clinical Exercise Physiology at the University of Portsmouth.

In a seminar to visitors of SPATEX 2025 in February, Dr Shepherd said: “The scientific evidence for the health benefits of exercise is well established, however, many individuals, older adults in particular, do not engage in regular exercise. This is often due to the presence of physical limitations or medical contraindications. The use of hot water immersion raises core body temperature and could provide similar health benefits to those obtained through regular exercise. Previous work in this area has been performed in young, healthy populations, whereas older individuals are likely to derive the greatest benefits from regular hot bathing and are less likely to be able to perform the recommended amount of exercise to maintain health. This PhD project aims to test the acute and chronic effects of using hot water immersion (hot tubs) in a healthy older adult population, such as changes in cardiovascular, cognitive and muscle function, as well as protein changes within the blood. These measures are being tested in response to a single immersion (acute) in the hot tub (40°C for 60 minutes) as well as the longer-term (chronic) effects from performing three immersions a week for six weeks (18 total).”

Commenting on the relevance of the study to the water leisure industry, Chris Hayes said: “The key take-away will be how long an immersion needs to last to get these benefits, as the current industry guidance typically suggests immersion for no more than 15 minutes.”

A Shining Example Of Flexible Pool Design

In this piece, we take a closer look at a recently finished project that features a custom-made Carropools swimming pool, which showcases the capability of the company and nicely reflects both the quality standard and eye for design that their dealers display

Based in Belgium, Carropools BV is an established firm when it comes to high-quality and exclusive custommade swimming pools, and their collaboration with professional swimming pool builders in the UK and across Europe is, and remains, a driving force behind the success of the company.

This pool project by one of the company’s partners (dealers) illustrates Carropools’ commitment to quality and perfectly illustrates the flexibility on offer when it comes to design. It was completed by ArtPools for a family in Belgium who wanted a super stylish and unique overflow swimming pool which would match the design of their house.

When it came to choosing a style, since Art-Pools had a wide portfolio of projects they had already completed, it was easy for the client to come to a design decision based on the wide range of existing images which perfectly showcased many of the company’s stunning pool projects. These pictures especially aided with decisions regarding the pool and therefore the water colour, the required natural looks for the project, plus the choosing of an overflow and infinity option.

As they would see the pool every day from their house, the client advised that it was essential that the lines and looks of the pool should match with the garden, terrace and

house. With this in mind, and with the pool being positioned so close to the house, the family opted for a ‘less is more’ design.

A custom-made polypropylene swimming pool using a combination of overflow and infinity edges (custom-made design, adapted to the terrace and garden design) was chosen, with internal dimensions of 16 x 3.71 x 1.45m (L x W x D). It incorporates a combination of overflow and infinity overflow design. The height of the infinity is 430mm and all the edges have been tiled with natural granite stones.

An automatic slatted cover by manufacturer T&A is integrated inside the pool in a beach (with removable top plate, in order to access the roller cover easily for cleaning / service). The water level of the pool will be lowered when the roller closes.

The steps are part of the custom-made pool design, in the same material and look and feel. The step model used is the Carropools Structa and they were placed against the beach.

The perfect finish of the overflow and infinity tiles have been critical to ensure an amazing water effect”

When it came to delivery, the large pool was delivered as a single piece. As the lorry was able to access the garden, the one-piece pool was lifted from it and placed directly on the concrete base. Art-Pools immediately connected all pipework between the pool and the technical room on the same day. Then the concrete was poured on the overflow edges so that within a week, the installers’ team could start with tiling and filling the water.

The perfect finish of the overflow and infinity tiles have been critical to ensure an amazing water effect, with the house, the pool, the terrace tiles and the grass also combining for an excellent match. A life-size black statue of a swimmer was added along with a shower, which will help to keep the pool water as clean as possible.

With the project complete, the client advised that the most satisfying thing about the pool is when the moment that the sun shines on the water, the colour is stunning! That combined with the endless view across the water has made it their dream pool.

With wellness pools and swimming ponds also available in the company’s offering, UK-based companies that are interested to know more about Carropools should get in touch to learn more about their full range.

Historic Welsh Estate Turns To Heatstar

With a need for a new energy efficient indoor swimming pool as part of a wider

self-sufficiency

Estate

drive

at

a historic site in Wales, the owners of the Llanfendigaid
turned to Cheshire Pool Services and Heatstar who together, provided the perfect pool solution despite a number of technical challenges

Located on the Cardigan Bay coast of Southern Gwynedd in North Wales and flanked by the dramatic scenery of the Snowdonia National Park sits the historic Llanfendigaid Estate.

The star of the show on this stunning estate is Llanfendigaid House, a three-storey, Grade II listed, Georgian stone house which has been in the same family for over 600 years and even boasts royal connections.

With a long-term goal in place of making the whole estate self-sufficient when it comes to the heating and electricity of the site, an impressive project was carried out to ensure that the ninebedroom estate plus indoor swimming pool was as energy efficient as possible.

When it became apparent the challenges that could be encountered to undertake such an ambitious project, the estate turned to Cheshire Pool Services, who are based in Warrington in the heart of the Cheshire area and are an experienced company that boasts the vision to deliver a project such as this from conception to completion. Led by the talented Chris Shore, the company have built up a reputation as a business that can do it all – from new pool installation, to pool refurbishment and even servicing and maintenance.

To achieve the estate’s goal of having the most energy efficient pool, it was essential that the three main parts of this project – that being the heat pump system, the swimming pool itself and the air handling unit – were all specified using the most energy efficient methods available.

Firstly, the introduction of an underground heat pump system allows the swimming pool water to be heated via the thermal energy

captured from the ground. This heat pump system is powered by electricity that is generated from 264 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels. This setup has improved the seasonal coefficient of performance rating and allows the estate to be self-sufficient.

Focusing on the swimming pool itself, Cheshire Pool Services were tasked with constructing a brand new thermally efficient pool and to ensure that it connected to the new incoming renewable energy supplies via a newly designed plantroom. This included the installation of a deluxe reinforced pool liner and an automatic pool cover which will help ‘seal off’ the pool water surface, reducing evaporation and keeping heat loss to an absolute minimum. To battle the issue of running groundwater, the swimming pool depth was significantly reduced which aids with the reduction of heat loss when the groundwater

comes into contact with the pool shell.

When choosing the optimum environmental control system for this prestigious and challenging installation, Cheshire Pool Services worked with Heatstar to specify the Heatstar Phoenix EC 2000 Super+ air handling unit. Encompassing all the available energy saving technologies and fully compliant with the latest building control regulations for commercial applications, the Phoenix EC represents the optimum and uncompromised environmental control solution for the highest specification indoor swimming pools.

During the design of the pool hall, Cheshire Pool Services made the decision to lower the ceiling height of the pool hall to act as a concealment for the new Phoenix system.

Chris Shore, Director of Cheshire Pool Services said: “The brief given to us was to make sure the project was as energy efficient as possible and we pulled out all the stops to make this happen. Heatstar’s quality is consistent and in line with Cheshire Pools Service’s own philosophy and as expected, the Phoenix EC unit has performed perfectly since installation.”

All the hard work of carrying out such an impressive project certainly paid off, with Cheshire Pool Services being ‘top of the class’ in an ‘Energy Efficient / ECO Project’ category at a industry awards event last year.

For a while now, heat pumps have been a firm favourite within the UK wet leisure industry and they’re often the go-to choice for heating the water in suitable pools and spas in an environmentally friendly way. With increased coverage of their benefits, combined with high energy prices they’re a product which is guaranteed to prosper. In this issue, we put various eco-friendly options under the spotlight

For numerous wet leisure installations across the UK, heat pumps, and in particular air source versions have, for a number of years now, been an ideal solution to heat water efficiently whilst extending what are normally shorter pool seasons here in the UK.

With models producing many times more energy than they consume, heat pumps effortlessly outperform many types of more conventional heating methods – so it’s easy to see why they’ve been such a popular choice for both owners and installers alike.

Their use has attracted attention far beyond our industry too. Even before the ongoing energy crisis kicked in, heat pumps for homes were being touted by the UK Government as key to net zero policies and an ideal long-term solution for heating needs. This meant they appeared on a number of mainstream media programmes and news pieces, resulting in their profile increasing due to a much wider audience. After hopefully peaking, energy prices appear to have somewhat stabilised, but their profile and therefore use within pools and spas is likely to be further enhanced.

in this issue, we take a closer look at some of the hottest heat pump options that are currently on the market.

THE X20 IS THE LATEST SHOW STOPPER AT GOLDEN COAST

At Golden Coast, they certainly know a thing or two about heat pumps. In fact, with more than 40 models in stock, they’re proud to boast about what they say is the biggest range for the UK wet leisure market. From compact devices suitable for hot tubs and swim spas to heavy-duty systems designed for commercial pools, there’s something to suit every project and build.

In 2025 we all want to make sure that the

technology we are using is environmentallyresponsible as well as effective and reliable. Which is where the coefficient of performance, or COP, comes in. Essentially, this is a ratio that measures how effectively a pump shifts heat from place to place.

And for years, Golden Coast has been proud to stock products that rank towards the highest end of the spectrum.

Now they’re taking things to the next level as sole European distributors for Fairland’s new X20 – one of only a handful of heat pumps on the market with a COP of 20. Utilising full-inverter technology, the X20 combines the inverter-compressor with extreme 3D heat-exchanging tech to maximise COP performance – resulting in a powerful, efficient unit with almostsilent operation. The X20 also comes with a market-leading seven-year warranty, guaranteeing absolute peace of mind with every installation.

INNOVATION IS THE DRIVING FORCE FOR HEATSTAR

Back in 1980, Heatstar created the first fresh air source heat pumps for dedicated application on swimming pools, and with them, the Heatstar brand was born. Those early pioneering technological innovations helped forge Heatstar’s reputation over the next 45 years and when it comes to the heating of outdoor swimming pools, Heatstar showcase their innovation with their Aquarius aerothermal heat pump.

The Aquarius utilises ‘direct contact’ technology to transfer heat from the refrigerant directly into the pool water and also incorporates an ultra-quiet ‘low energy’ digital fan. It offers pool owners comfort, efficiency and low energy costs while being clean, safe and environmentally friendly.

quality in mind and comprises a number of market-leading components including a high efficiency orbital scroll compressor and special titanium heat exchanger. This unit comes with all the features the pool trade have become accustomed to with a Heatstar system, such as easy-to-use controls and low energy digital fans to ensure operational noise is reduced to an absolute minimum. It is made of the very best materials with first class workmanship. In fact, Heatstar have such confidence in the quality of the Aquarius that they offer a 20 year anticorrosion guarantee on the Aquarius’ heat exchanger and a 20 year guarantee on the anodised aluminium chassis.

Each unit comes in a no maintenance, weatherproof, anodised aluminium skeleton frame with access panels formed from robust galvanised steel, with a tough PVC coating to prevent against corrosion. This provides maximum strength and ensures a long operational life of the unit.

Heatstar can also specify and configure the Aquarius to cool pool water making it an obvious choice for applications that include a cold plunge pool.

The Aquarius range also extends to encompass large capacity models for nonresidential pool applications. So for projects both residential and commercial, the Aquarius is a great solution.

GET CONNECTED WITH POLYTROPIC HEAT PUMPS FROM LIGHTHOUSE

Lighthouse are Polytropic’s exclusive partner for the UK and supply the full range from the brand. The French manufacturer has been designing and manufacturing swimming pool heat pumps for over 20 years and on the continent, they have become the biggest

seller of swimming pool heat pumps, with a reputation for quality, performance and reliability.

All Polytropic heat pumps come with a full five-year parts and labour warranty, are supported by an active remote monitoring system and are connected to the UK’s 4G mobile phone network. This means that in-house Lighthouse technicians based in Plymouth are able to access each unit remotely, reporting back to the trade professionals on the status of the heat pump.

This innovative system ensures all Polytropic heat pumps are set up and operating to give the optimum performance, any faults are diagnosed quickly and brings a reassuring, new level of customer service.

With a heat pump for most requirements, the extensive range features products for both pools and spas, with a couple of the highlights being the distinctive looking Master Inverter, which thanks to its smart, exclusive regulation system, manages its power depending on the water temperature but also depending on the surrounding air temperature. This always guarantees the right bathing temperature, the best possible COP and the lowest sound level!

Then there’s the Ottimo model. Inverter

ONE MODEL TYPE IS ALL THAT’S NEEDED AT OCEA UK

As a growing business, Ocea UK are incredibly selective in what products they offer to the pool trade – who are integral direct representatives of these products to pool owners. With several decades of industry experience within the business, Ocea UK’s buying team handpick products of premium quality and this includes the successful addition of the Inverter Vertical Heat Pump.

This configuration offers distinct advantages over traditional horizontal outlet models, particularly in terms of a reduced footprint, ease of installation and minimising cold air recirculation, ultimately leading to enhanced performance and user satisfaction.

One of the primary benefits of Ocea UK’s vertical outlet heat pumps lies in their simplified installation process. Unlike horizontal units that often require careful consideration of surrounding obstacles and directional airflow, the vertical design offers greater flexibility and the orientation can, in many instances, lead to more direct and less complex pipework runs to and from the pool or spa.

With its vertical output, this all-season heat pump can be positioned as little as 500mm away from buildings and plant rooms. Powered by inverter technology, the range starts at 10kW all the way up to 35kW and the entire range enjoys the same exclusive benefits, with COP up to 16. Each model has three modes: Turbo, Smart and Silence.

So having found a heat pump that not only performs to a high level, but is energy

saving and is also 15 times quieter than a standard model, this is the only heat pump found in the Ocea-X range. This is due to its reliability, efficiency, performance and value for money.

NEW FOR 2025 – EXCLUSIVE AQUA X MODELS FROM SCP

For the 2025 season, SCP UK have introduced four new and exclusive Fairland AquaX heat pump models – the Cool and Heat AquaX Essential, the AquaX 20 Reversible and AquaX Turbo Silence Vertical – all of which are suitable for domestic projects and available in a range of sizes –plus the AquaX Jumbo for commercial pools, which comes in two sizes.

Concentrating on the domestic models, all three incorporate a ‘Cool & Heat’ function and offer 4-season functionality (request sizing for all year use), with the AquaX 20 Reversible model operating from temperatures as low as -20°C. This model also achieves COP 20 – a new industry standard for energy efficiency –with 1 kW consumed becoming up to 20 kW maximum in the pool.

All are extremely quiet in their operation, with the AquaX 20 Reversible and AquaX Turbo Silence Vertical models featuring TurboSilence inverter technology which is an optimised version of Fairland’s original Fullinverter technology.

This perfectly balances the inverter / compressor / control and heat exchanging technology, which creates the turbo performance and silent operation at the same time.

By incorporating data research and historical analysis of the variable operation conditions of 4-season swimming from the early stage of R&D, TurboSilence inverter technology achieves precise power adjustment and output.

For ease of operation, each model includes a digital control panel plus there’s built in Wi-Fi which ensures simple remote control via an app.

For peace of mind, warranties are long, but vary depending on the model and element –they range from 3 years parts on the AquaX Vertical model up to 15 on both the heat exchanger and compressor on the AquaX 20 Reversible.

ENJOY COST EFFECTIVE HEATING WITH ECOV HEAT PUMPS FROM WATERCO

The Electroheat ECO-V pool heat pump range from Waterco uses just a fraction of the energy to generate the same amount of heat compared to gas and electric heaters. Unlike solar heating, there is no reliance on the sun as the latent heat in the air is used. For every 1kW of electricity consumed, the Electroheat ECO-V can produce up to 8kW of heat.

Waterco’s inverter technology uses a variable speed compressor. It slows down and speeds up as needed to maintain the desired temperature. This provides a more stable water temperature and 15%-30% energy savings over fixed speed systems, as well as quieter operation.

Electroheat ECO-V inverter pool heat pumps also feature automatic de-icing. In cooler climates or winter months when a build up of ice is detected, the heat pump shifts temporarily into the cooling mode to reverse the flow of refrigerant through the evaporator

coils. Hot refrigerant moves through the outside coils, melting ice and defrosting the system. When the defrost cycle is complete, the unit shifts back to heating mode.

Available in both side-mounted and top-mounted fan versions and model sizes from 5kW to 25kW, whatever the installation there is a Waterco ECO-V heat pump to suit.

The technology, efficiency and sector knowledge behind lighting options for the wet leisure sector has developed at an incredible pace over recent years and a variety of solutions are now enhancing both commercial and domestic environments alike. Installations of all sizes are benefiting from the latest energy efficient products, which when combined with creative ideas, provide some truly incredible settings. In this issue, we shine a light on just some of the illuminating options

With what seems like a vast number of options currently available for every type of wet leisure setting, it’s no exaggeration to say that the latest lighting technologies and products are literally transforming the look of many of today’s waterbased installations. And that applies to both in and out of the water and within both domestic and commercial environments too. In short, modern lighting solutions are allowing all types of projects the chance to be seen in their best possible light!

Powerful yet super efficient LEDs have understandably become the accepted go-to choice of professionals across a wide range of projects and their development and use has meant that the plain yet functional lights of previous generations are rapidly becoming a distant memory.

As with any kind of product that has an element of technology, improvements are made on an ongoing basis and time has definitely not stood still for options within the lighting sector. LED is a far more sustainable lighting solution when compared to previous technologies. They do not generate toxic waste, they have a longer service life plus they require significantly less energy to function. That all combines to provide a greatly reduced impact on the environment whilst saving costs too. In addition to their green credentials, and for many installations arguably a more important feature, is that a mix of cleverly installed lighting combined with sophisticated controls can provide dramatic effects inside wet leisure installations, enhancing features and project aesthetics, plus they can also be used externally to soften walls, assist with the décor by highlighting areas of interest or simply be used to set an overall mood. What’s more, they excel in providing enhanced visual benefits, which greatly assists with safety, which is especially key for busy commercial settings.

So with these benefits, surely now is

the time to see the light!

With plenty of choices available on the market from a variety of brands and manufacturers, in this issue, we round up a number of the illuminating solutions which are on offer this season.

EXPECT BIG RESULTS FROM SCP’S COMPACT LIGHTING SOLUTIONS

Over the last few seasons, SCP UK have introduced LED lights from French manufacturer CCEI to their product offering.

Added first was the Mini BRiO 2 LED light generation which gives an unmatched, powerful and compact solution to lighting up swimming pools. With 1,300lm produced by the 12W white option and 900lm from the RGBW, along with a choice of stylish bezels, these lights provide many possibilities in pool lighting.

Install the Mini Brio 2 in CCEI wall conduits and take advantage of a compact design solution. Furthermore, there is no need to pull the connection up above the water line as the wall conduit is watertight at the back.

The Mini Brio 2’s were followed by the Mid BRiO – a solution which features a combination of many technologies and offers an unrivalled power / light / size ratio in the swimming pool market. Light up pools with a product that has a diameter of just 75mm and delivers up to 2,600lm.

This new generation of lights is the missing link in swimming pool lighting and allows owners to differentiate a pool with lighting that is as subtle as a mini spotlight but as powerful as a big spotlight.

Thanks to its ingenious design, the Mid BRiO has an impressive light beam angle of up to 160°. Where other lights diffuse 120°, the Mid-BRiO illuminates more of the pool delivering high-performance lighting with hardly any unlit areas.

The Pico BRiO is the latest innovation in CCEI’s Brio lighting range, joining the Mid BRiO and Mini BRiO models. With a diameter of just 28mm, this ultra-compact light is designed to offer maximum flexibility.

The Pico BRiO is the ideal solution for those who want to bring a sophisticated, personalised touch of light to their pool while maintaining low energy consumption. Whether installed in a pool or in a garden, this compact light will meet all outdoor lighting needs. SPN

Above-ground Pools, In Their Various Guises, Offer Fun, Value And Flexibility!

Despite the competition from other wet leisure products, there’s always demand for above-ground pools in the UK and the fun they provide. Today’s options are available in various guises, but the idea behind these mainly smaller, and often entry-level solutions is cost effectiveness combined with a more straightforward installation. With plenty of options available this year, we take a look at these ever-popular options

The expanding above-ground pools sector – which now includes lined metal-framed pools, wooden pools, panel pools, exercise pools, converted container crates and more – has been a popular choice for many years, and reason isn’t solely down to their relatively more affordable price tag when compared to other pool types and options. A wide range of sizes and fantastic flexibility, combined in an easy to use and normally simplified installation have also played their part in the success of this sector.

One of the biggest factors of the appeal to these pools is that they are within reach of those families who dream of getting on the ‘pool owning ladder’ and it’s this mix of cost and convenience which has increasingly resonated with UK consumers, many of which will be on a tight budget. That’s not to say above-ground options are always cheap, but as a combined sector, they are generally viewed as more entry-level than their in-ground cousins.

For families with plans of longer term

pool ownership, a little imagination and landscaping can mean that the options available for these versatile projects can quite literally transform even the smallest of garden spaces and provide hours of enjoyment and relaxation. When space isn’t an issue, and if family fun is the top priority, above-ground options can provide most of the benefits of a full sized more permanent pool, but for a lower cost.

Increasingly these pool options have been sought by families or owners who want to make the pool into a real feature in their garden and they are often sunk partially or sometimes fully into the ground with decking and landscaping really finishing the project off in some very creative ways.

The ease and speed of building them is a big advantage over other types of pools too, and with installs taking just a few days, above-ground pools are a great optional extra for any garden, meaning they can often be an impulse buy to satisfy the needs of families who often have young children to keep entertained.

With so much going for them, it’s no wonder that the British public has started to look at the more serious above-ground and wooden options as an investment for both their families and gardens, plus an enhancement to their lifestyle. So, with hot weather around the corner, this could end up being another good year for the sector, as the British public take the plunge into pool ownership, and here we take a look at some of the above-ground options for 2025.

Established over 50 years ago, Piscine Laghetto® has always stood out for its ability to understand and anticipate the trends and expectations of its customers, striving to offer products that are technically excellent and at the same time iconic and design orientated. Over the years, the company has strived to create pools that become a piece of furniture which fit seamlessly into the garden, terrace or even inside the home.

ABOVE-GROUND & WOODEN POOLS

One of the most popular models is the Dolcevita, an above-ground pool that not only looks stylish but is also functional and easy to assemble. A distinctive feature of the pools are the uniquely designed panels.

The panelling consists of a structure made from Magnelis steel onto which a synthetic polypropylene fibre obtained by extrusion is woven by hand. It is this craftmanship which gives each pool a unique appearance and make it stand out from other pools in the market.

The Divina pool range offers a semiin-ground solution that harmoniously integrates with modern landscapes. Requiring minimal excavation, Divina pools can be installed quickly and easily without constructing containment walls, thanks to their self-supporting structure and side steel panels. Divina pools come with an integrated technical room which is under one end of the pool. The cover is load-bearing and has cushions as standard, making it a spacious sunbathing area. With options for hand-woven wicker panels in various colours and a wide range of sizes, each pool can be tailored to reflect individual tastes and complement specific outdoor settings.

CUBEPOOLS OFFER SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT IN THE ABOVEGROUND SECTOR

With distinctive looks, swimming pools made from shipping containers also offer a range of benefits, meaning they are an increasingly popular choice among individuals and communities alike. Firstly, their unique design and compact size make them highly versatile, allowing for installation in a variety of spaces, including smaller garden spaces and even rooftops. This makes swimming pools accessible to a wider audience. Additionally, the use of repurposed shipping containers promotes sustainability and reduces environmental impact.

Cabin Depot are exclusive distributors of Cubepools container pools and they offer a standard range of 20, 30 and 40ft pools in three configurations, plus custom sizes too. The standard range includes:

• Cubepool Comfort is the entry-level option – a perfect solution for those who want to enjoy owning a pool without any

construction works needed! Its unique, industrial design in one of the specially designed finishes, will fit both in a small garden and in a bigger space. Its carefully crafted details made from stainless steel will guarantee long lasting looks of its stunning design.

• Cubepool Premium is a great combination of comfort, pleasure and unique design. Thanks to the addition of a water heating system and internal lights, the fun of using the pool isn’t limited by the time of day and the comfort is available even during slightly colder months! Cubepool Premium also features a thermal isolation system, which reduces heat loss plus an active filter bed to improve the quality of water.

• Cubepool Sport & Spa is a perfect product for the most demanding customers. In addition to all the elements that feature on the Premium option, thanks to a regulated flow system, the deeper Cubepool Sport & Spa features a jet swim system so owners get a sports pool with counter-current that can turn into a spa with hydromassage in a matter of seconds.

Each Cubepool has a range of configuration options too, meaning when deciding on a pool, owners can choose either a pre-defined colour option or design it themselves.

There’s Never Been A Better Time To Embrace The Chill!

Over the last few years, products associated with the cold water side of the wet leisure sector have gained real traction thanks to some high-profile media coverage detailing the many benefits that low temperature water provides. Whilst still a niche sector, the resulting flood of cold water therapy products, especially from manufacturers within the hot tub sector, was inevitable, and in this issue, we take a closer look at some of the available options

For anyone working within the wet leisure industry, it’s fair to say that one product area that has seen a tremendous amount of interest over the last few years is that which involves the use of cold water.

There’s many names being used across the industry for these type of products – cold tubs, ice baths, cold plunge pools… the list goes on and will sometimes depend on whether the product is portable or not, plus there’s also solutions which combine both cold and hot environments to consider too. Whatever the term used for the product, they are all referring to the immersion of the body into a product which contains cold water of 15°C or less – and often, quite a bit less! Having been used for hundreds if not

thousands of years, cold water therapy provides a number of physical and mental benefits for those brave enough to take the plunge. These include but aren’t limited to: improved support for the immune system, stress reduction due to the release of dopamine, improved sleep quality, pain relief and improved recovery time for certain injuries, plus an improved metabolism for weight management.

These benefits have meant in more recent times, cold water therapy has been used primarily by athletes, but also by those in the know, however, thanks in part to increased media exposure highlighting the many benefits that cold water therapy provides, a much wider range of people are now taking a closer look at numerous products which have

flooded the sector, along with the range of benefits on offer.

So, with cold water therapy products looking like a trend that is set to continue, in this issue, we put a number of the options that are currently available under the spotlight.

CHILL TUBS EXTEND RANGE WITH GAME-CHANGING INFLATABLE ICE OPTIONS

One brand that has enjoyed tremendous success with their cold water therapy products is Superior Wellness who introduced their popular Chill Tubs brand at the start of 2023. The well-received Original model, was joined by the Lite, a limited edition Obsidian, plus a Pro model, all of which proved to be extremely popular options within the sector.

Last year, the company announced the next products in their extensive range of ice baths – the oval shaped Chill Tubs Essential Bath and circular Essential Pod options – bringing the range up to five models.

These lightweight additions to the range have been designed for those at the beginning of their cold water journey or for those that require the flexibility of an easily transportable option.

These inflatable models are both portable and simple to use, with durable fibreglassreinforced PVC walls for the perfect cold plunge experience. Simply use a hose pipe and fill with cold water and to reduce the temperature further, add ice or ice packs. Alternatively, a chiller with accessories can be purchased as an optional extra.

A thermo lid allows the temperature to maintain at as low as 3°C, and both models along with their lids are insulated, keeping the outside weather from affecting either of the tubs.

The Essential Pod is one of two new, lightweight additions to the Chill Tubs range from Superior Wellness

These easy-to-maintain models are ideal for those wanting to try the physical and mental benefits of cold-water therapy, as well as the more experienced, on-the-go users. In fact, each takes less than five minutes to inflate for a super-easy set up.

CERTIKIN’S HARVIA FROSTY OFFERS COLD THERAPY FOR BODY AND MIND

Regularly exposing the body to cold water for short periods of time brings several health benefits, however, this mode of therapy has typically only been available for professional athletes and people visiting spas and swimming halls – and, of course, people doing ice swimming during the winter – but having access to an always-ready cold ice tub is an excellent way to achieve these health benefits.

Available from Certikin, Harvia Frosty is a cold plunge enabling this healthy practice to be part of a user’s daily routine in the comfort of their own home. Harvia Frosty is always ready to be used and owners can easily adjust the water to the desired temperature, the

lowest being 4°C.

The oval-shaped Harvia Frosty cold tub comfortably fits two people, also enabling a shared moment to take care of the users wellbeing. Harvia Frosty is made of highquality materials that are safe to use, feel comfortable on the skin, and are easy to maintain. Harvia Frosty always comes with an insulated cover to maintain the desired temperature energy-efficiently and improve safety by keeping children out of the ice pool.

Both the pool and the cooling unit come with a warranty of two years.

UK MADE, PORTABLE AND FIXED SOLUTION’S FROM SPAFLO

A cold plunge pool from stainless steel specialists SpaFlo is a compact option that provides both style and functionality, making them the perfect choice for both private and commercial environments. experience, providing a seamless addition to both indoor and outdoor spaces.

If a portable stainless steel solution is required, there’s the ContraSpa option.

Created by SpaFlo’s founder Richard Gowland, ContraSpa was unveiled last year at SPATEX after he identified a gap in the market for a high-quality, dual use, single shell spa that provides hot and cold water therapy. This new concept creates a unique opportunity for people to enjoy an immediate and contrasting cold and hot water therapy.

The luxury spa design is based on the company’s logo and ethos, with a unique Ying / Yang separating the water whilst allowing easy access through cleverly integrated steps.

The spa is made of UK sourced sustainable commercial grade steel, and clever lighting highlights the hot and cold areas, ensuring it looks beautiful. Controls are Wi-Fi and touchscreen enabled ensuring the ultimate in ease of use and flexibility.

Speaking at the time of its launch, Richard Gowland said: “Health through water is at the heart of what we do. Spas, pools and

WITH STRONG DEMAND FOR AQUANALE 2025, EXPECT COLOGNE TO BE BUSY IN OCTOBER!

A total of around 320 exhibiting companies from more than 25 countries are expected in Cologne for this year’s aquanale event. The trade fair is especially pleased at strong growth this year from Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Poland, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and the Czech Republic.

aquanale will take place in Cologne from 28 to 31 October 2025 parallel with FSB, the International Trade Fair for Public Space, Sports and Leisure Facilities.

“We are very pleased at having already received so many applications at the present time from international exhibitors. It is not only a clear commitment on the part of the industry to aquanale, but also reinforces its position as one of the world’s leading trade fairs for the future-oriented swimming pool, sauna and wellness market,” said Matthias Pollmann, Vice President Trade Fair Management Koelnmesse back in February when 80% of the exhibition area had already booked!

In 2025, aquanale will once again be located in exhibition halls 7 and 8 of Koelnmesse – clearly divided into the six familiar theme worlds. Trends for private swimming pool and wellness facilities with saunas and spas as well as innovations and management concepts for operators of public swimming pools, water parks and thermal

baths will be shown here.

In addition to a comprehensive overview of innovative products and designs, aquanale 2025 offers the usual high quality programme, formulated together with the German association for swimming pools and wellness (bsw) as industry sponsor and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS).

Held from 17 to 20 November 2025 in halls 1 and 2 of the Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, Piscina Barcelona is expected to occupy 20,000m2 of stand and activity areas, meaning growth in both size and the expected number of exhibitors versus 2023, when a total of 367 exhibitors from 30 countries took part and a record number of international exhibitors was reached. For this year’s event, organisers also expect to attract more than 14,000 visitors (with 60% of them expected to be from abroad).

With the backing of the Spanish business association ASOFAP along with the most important brands in the swimming pool sector worldwide, the event will focus on advances in water and energy optimisation, the digitisation of maintenance and improving the user experience of aquatic facilities.

This year’s trade show is also committed to expanding the Outdoor sector (landscaping, furniture, equipment and accessories for

outdoor use) given the synergies that exist between this speciality and pool design projects, combined with the increase in demand for these products in the residential and hotel sectors.

To complement the commercial offer, Piscina Barcelona 2025 will have activity areas where visitors can see and experience the evolution of innovation in the sector. It will be building its usual Wellness Experience, a fully-equipped and operational wellness centre that will be joined by the previously mentioned Outdoor living area. These combined areas will allow visitors to test solutions on display in a real environment.

There will also be an Innovation Zone where visitors can discover the best solutions on display at the fair to improve the sustainability and digitisation of aquatic facilities.

The show will also include several conferences and seminars to update knowledge, as well as to reflect on the role of swimming pools and their contribution to social and environmental challenges. It will also provide networking spaces and play host to several awards ceremonies too.

Thanks to a record number of companies eager to participate, the team has expanded the floor plan to maximise every inch of the exhibition hall. Organiser, Michele Bridle, from September.

“We are excited to unveil our eye-catching 30th anniversary design,” said Michele. “It’s an incredibly exciting time at SPATEX as we celebrate three decades. It’s a history we’re proud of. Small And Medium-sized Enterprises – “The Backbone Of UK Business”

In this issue, Dyfed Thompson-Smith, General Manager at AstralPool UK and current British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) President, provides some thoughts on the challenges and changes that many wet leisure industry

businesses are experiencing due to being SMEs

As we hit the mid-point of the year, every sector in our industry is working hard to meet the constantly evolving consumer wants and demands against a backdrop of political and economic changes.

Our industry will already be experiencing the impacts of the increase in tax burden announced in the autumn budget. This will, in turn, force our businesses to navigate a complex and challenging environment of higher taxes, wider economic pressures and higher costs in producing our services and goods.

Most readers of this publication fall under the definition of an SME (small or mediumsized enterprise), as classified in the UK. Even larger organisations with global parent companies technically operate under the UK SME categories, highlighting a shared experience that impacts our entire industry. The UK generally defines an SME as having fewer than 250 employees.

To put this in perspective, SMEs are at the heart of the UK economy. Small businesses account for 99% of all British businesses and contribute an estimated £2 trillion combined in annual turnover to the UK economy.

Within this classification, there are three categories:

• Microbusinesses

• Small businesses

• Medium-sized businesses.

The government has announced that it will update the company size thresholds effective 6 April 2025. While the turnover and balance sheet total thresholds will increase, the employee count threshold will remain the same.

HOW WILL THESE CHANGES AFFECT SMALL BUSINESSES?

The government asserts that this new categorisation will reduce regulation and complexity for many businesses. For instance, those who qualify as microbusinesses will no longer need to produce a director’s report, while small businesses will be exempt from conducting a statutory audit of their annual accounts. This could be seen as positive news for all businesses.

Having recently taken on a voluntary role on the Hampshire & Isle of Wight regional board for the Institute of Directors (IoD), I aim to promote SMEs and direct them to available resources and roadmaps in these industries. By viewing SMEs through the perspectives of other industries and organisations, I believe we can gain greater insight and enhance the excellent work being done by our industry associations.

A recent survey by the IoD, in collaboration with Hiscox, revealed that directors are prioritising growth despite facing significant challenges. Economic uncertainty, legislative changes and cash flow concerns were identified as top business risks in the coming year. Many directors are taking proactive steps to enhance resilience and future-proof their operations through professional training to navigate these risks.

The encouraging news is that the focus on growth indicates that these challenges are being addressed head-on, and I see concrete evidence of this in our industry.

TARIFFS, UNCERTAINTY AND CONFIDENCE

When writing this opinion piece, it’s difficult not to reference the impact of Trump’s presidency and the delivery of his shockwaves in the geopolitical landscape. At this stage, the effect of tariffs may be felt at some level within our industry, but in the longer term, what these will look like for our industry remains to be seen. Perhaps more importantly is the uncertainty and slow down in confidence created in the market place which may “filter” (excuse the pun) down into delayed buying decisions for our consumers of goods and services.

The wet leisure industry has always embraced challenges and tackled them head-

on, a hallmark of our dynamic and resilient sector. I witness this daily through the planning and proactive actions of all involved in the pool ecosystem.

However, I have observed an increasing burden on business owners and directors in today’s environment. Many juggle multiple roles essential to running a successful business – human resources, sales and marketing, finance, on site work and managing customer expectations. The pressure this creates often manifests during our everyday interactions with customers.

Empathy is crucial, and alongside the practical aspects of delivering services and products, sometimes just having someone with an understanding ear on the other end of the phone can make a significant difference. Is it naïve to expect and wish for business interactions to be conducted with respect and empathy? I don’t believe so; that is precisely what I seek when making personal purchasing decisions or engaging with service providers.

In summary, the passion, drive and willingness to adapt to ever-increasing changes in our business environment never cease to amaze me, and as always, I feel privileged to be part of our dynamic industry. Here’s to the past, present and future of the pool industry in the UK!

Aquafilter

PoolPolisher

For maximum efficiency:

Combine the Pool Line filter with the PoolPolisher filter

The Aquafilter Pool Polisher is a simple filtration solution for pools. Made from HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene), it works seamlessly with the Aquafilter Pool line filter. It effectively ensures flow and optimal treatment during backflushing and servicing.

The two-stage filtration system provides consistent 5-micron filtration, which helps maintain low turbidity in the pool water, ensuring it stays clear and clean. This is particularly important for pools that require efficient filtration during maintenance periods, such as servicing, which typically disrupts water flow.

Partial Flow Filter:

The filter is designed to treat a partial part of the total flow.

Polishing the Water Over Time:

The filter is for finer filtration at a later stage in the filtration removing finer particles after the bulk of the filtration has been done.

Depth Filtration:

The filter material works by capturing particles within its depth, rather than just on the surface. This type of filtration allows for greater dirt-holding capacity and is effective at removing a wide range of particulate sizes.

Servicing/Maintenance for Main Pressure Filter:

The partial flow filter is used in conjunction with and during the servicing of the Pool Line Filter. It helps ensure continued filtration when the Pool Line filter is undergoing maintenance.

Easy to Change Filter Bags:

The design includes user-friendly maintenance features, such as easily replaceable filter bags, which reduces downtime during maintenance.

5 Micron Recommended Filtration Grade:

The filter is recommended to have a 5-micron filtration grade, which means it’s designed to filter out particles that are 5 microns or larger in size. This is effective at removing fine sediment, dirt, and some microorganisms.
