THE SERIES INVESTIGATES THE "LIFE" OF THESE BUILDINGS, REVEALING FACTS THAT MAY NOT BE SO FAMILIAR, BUT HELP UNRAVEL THE HISTORY OF SÃO PAULO AND ITS NEARLY 500 YEARS, AND TO FIND OUT WHAT THIS CITY IS REALLY MADE OF.

AN ONLINE MATERIAL CULTURAL PROJECT WWW.PREDIOSDESAOPAULO.COM - WHICH BECAME A BOOK, WHERE THE HISTORY OF BUILDINGS WHICH ARE A SYMBOL OF THE CITY IS RESCUED. THE AUTHOR IS THE ITALIAN MATTEO GAVAZZI, A RESIDENT OF THE PAULISTA CAPITAL FOR FIVE YEARS, AND OF PHOTOGRAPHERS EMILIANO HAGGE AND MILENA LEONEL. EPISODE 1: EDIFÍCIO MARTINELLI AND THE PALACETE CHAVANTES ON THE FIRST EPISODE, SP BUILDINGS TELLS THE STORY OF TWO OF THE FIRST SKYSCRAPERS OF SÃO PAULO, GREAT STRUCTURES OF THE 1920’S AND 1930’S. THE FIFTY-YEAR ELEVATOR OPERATOR OF THE CHAVANTES BUILDING AND THE SECURITY GUARD WHO BECAME PUBLIC RELATIONS OF EDIFÍCIO MARTINELLI REVEAL THE HISTORY OF THESE BUILDINGS, WHICH ARE PART OF THEIR LIVES, RELIVING TRAGIC AND REMARKABLE EVENTS AND HOW PIONEERING THESE CONSTRUCTIONS WERE.

EPISODE 4: THE LOUVRE AND THE CINDERELLA TWO PROJECTS OF THE PAULISTANO JOÃO ARTACHO JURADO – THE BUSINESSMAN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF MANY BUILDINGS IN THE CITY, MAINLY IN HIGIENÓPOLIS –, BOTH BUILD IN THE 1950’S. THE HISTORY OF CINDERELA IS TOLD BY SEVERINO, THE JANITOR WHO WORKS IN THE PLACE FOR 30 YEARS AND KNOWS ITS ENTIRE LIFE, DEATH AND MIRACLES OF THE BUILDING. IN THE LOUVRE, IT IS THE RESIDENT PERCILA CAMARINHA WHO OPENS THE DOORS OF HER APARTMENT AND REVEALS THE HISTORY AND THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING.


EPISODE 5: THE CCBB AND THE TRIBUNAL DE JUSTIÇA [COURT HOUSE] THE CURRENT TRIBUNAL DE JUSTIÇA OF SÃO PAULO WAS BUILT IN THE 1930’S AND IT HOUSED THE OLD SÃO PAULO STOCK EXCHANGE. THE CCBB [BANCO DO BRASIL CULTURAL CENTER], IN TURN, STARTED TO BE BUILT IN 1901 TO HOUSE THE BANCO DO BRASIL. IT WAS FINISHED AT THE END OF THE 1920’S AND IN 2001 IT WAS COMPLETELY RENEWED TO GIVE PLACE TO A CULTURAL CENTER.ECLECTIC DESIGNS WHICH HAD THEIR ORIGINAL PURPOSE MODIFIED, BUT WHICH ARE PRESERVED AND STILL STANDING, MAINTAINING A UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE TO BE EXPLORED BY SOME OF THE EMPLOYEES WHO WORK IN THESE BUILDINGS.


EPISODE 6: THE GERMAINE BURCHARD AND THE RIACHUELO THE GERMAINE BURCHARD, DESIGNED IN THE 1930’S, WAS THE FIRST BUILDING OF THE CITY TO BE USED AS A FLAT. THE BUILDING HAS UNDERGONE SEVERAL RENOVATIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, AND THE LAST ONE WAS CARRIED OUT BY ARCHITECT PIERRE MALMSTEIN, WHO KEPT MOST OF THE ORIGINAL DETAILS. HE BOUGHT THE ENTIRE BUILDING, WHERE HE ALSO KEEPS HIS OFFICE, AND WILL RESCUE ITS HISTORY AS THE BUILDING WHICH HAS ONCE BEEN CONSIDERED SÃO PAULO’S MOST BEAUTIFUL. IN THIS EPISODE, WE ARE ALSO INTRODUCED TO PALACETE RIACHUELO, ONE OF THE FIRST APARTMENT BUILDINGS OF ALL LATIN AMERICA. CONSIDERED A SÃO PAULO CITY HERITAGE, THE RIACHUELO WILL BE DISCOVERED THROUGH THE EYES OF BUILDING MANAGER SIDNÉIA, WHO HAS BEEN RUNNING THE PLACE FOR DECADES.


EPISODE 7: THE NOBEL AND THE EIFFEL TWO BUILDINGS MARKED BY MODERNISM IN DIFFERENT WAYS. THE EIFFEL IS A RESIDENTIAL BUILDING DESIGNED BY OSCAR NIEMEYER, A KEY ELEMENT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE. ACCORDING TO THE LEGEND, HOWEVER, HE WAS NOT HAPPY WITH THE RESULT AND WANTED TO REFUSE AUTHORSHIP. ANYWAY, THE PLACE HAS A NICE SET OF APARTMENTS AND A PRIVILEGED VIEW, AND DESERVES TO BE KNOWN. EPISODE 8: THE GUAIMBÊ AND THE PAULICÉIA IN THIS EPISODE, SP BUILDINGS FOCUSES ON ARCHITECTURAL EXPONENTS THROUGH TWO VERY SPECIAL BUILDINGS: THE GUAIMBÊ AND THE PAULICÉIA. THE FIRST WAS BUILT IN THE 1960’S BY PAULO MENDES DA ROCHA. KNOWN AS THE FIRST BUILDING OF BRUTALIST ARCHITECTURE THAT HAS EVER BEEN HEARD OF, IT CALLS ATTENTION FOR THE APPARENT CONCRETE FACADE AND THE ABSENCE OF CORRIDORS. THE PAULICÉIA, ON ITS TURN, DESIGNED BY JACQUES PILLON AND GIAN CARLO GASPERINI, IS MARKED BY IT CERAMIC TITLE FACADE, SHUTTERS AND MARQUEES. THE BUILDING FROM THE 1950’S IS CURRENTLY PROTECTED, CONSIDERED A SÃO PAULO STATE HERITAGE. ITS RESIDENTS AND EMPLOYEES INTRODUCE THE HISTORY OF THESE IMPORTANT BUILDINGS, DURING THEIR DAILY LIFE.


EPISODE 9: THE JOÃO MOURA AND THE CORUJAS MODERN, COMMERCIAL AND WELL LOCATED BUILDINGS THAT CALL ATTENTION FROM AFAR. IN PINHEIROS, NEXT TO PRAÇA BENEDITO CALIXTO, IS EDIFÍCIO JOÃO MOURA, WITH ITS BALCONIES AND TERRACES, WHICH WILL BE PRESENTED BY ITS OWN DESIGNERS: THE YOUNG ARCHITECTS LUA AND PEDRO NITSCHE. AND JUST NEARBY, IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF VILA MADALENA, IS THE CORUJAS: A HORIZONTAL BUILDING, WITH A GARDEN AND BIKE RACK, TO WHICH WE WILL BE INTRODUCED BY THOSE WHO WORK THERE.


EPISODE 10: THE UNIQUE AND ITAÚ CULTURAL TWO BUILDINGS WITH SPECIFIC PURPOSES AND WELL-KNOWN NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF IT, BUT ALSO BY THEIR ARCHITECTURE. THE FAMOUS HOTEL UNIQUE, WITH ITS RENOWNED SKYE RESTAURANT, IS A CURIOUS AND STRIKING BUILDING, WHICH JOINS THE ARCHITECTURE OF RUY OHTAKE, THE DESIGN OF JOÃO ARMENTANO AND LANDSCAPING BY GILBERTO ELKIS. THE INSTITUTO ITAÚ CULTURAL BUILDING, LOCATED ON THE IMPORTANT AVENIDA PAULISTA, HOLDS ART AND CULTURE IN AN AREA OF ALMOST 2,000 METERS. ALTHOUGH IT WAS BUILT RECENTLY, IN 1995, THE BUILDING IS ALREADY ONE OF THE TRADEMARKS OF THE CITY OF SÃO PAULO.


EPISODE 11: THE DOMUS AND THE CÍCERO PRADO IN THIS EPISODE, WE WILL BE INTRODUCED TO EDIFÍCIO DOMUS, A PROJECT FROM THE 1960’S FROM THE SAME FIRM IN CHARGE OF WORKS SUCH AS GALERIA DO ROCK [THE ROCK GALLERY] AND THE FORMER HOTEL HILTON. IT IS A SUMPTUOUS BUILDING IN HIGIENÓPOLIS, WHICH IS INTRODUCED TO US BY THE FASHION DESIGNER FAWSIA BORRALHO, WHO CAME FROM THE NORTHEAST OF THE COUNTRY TO INVEST IN SP, AND FELL IN LOVE WITH ONE OF THE APARTMENTS. ON AVENIDA RIO BRANCO IS THE CICERO PRADO, ONE OF THE WORKS FROM ARCHITECT GREGORI WARCHAVCHIK FROM THE 1950’S. CALLING ATTENTION FOR THE AMAZING DESIGN OF ITS STAIRCASE, THE BUILDING WILL BE SHOWN TO US BY THE JANITOR WHO HAS BEEN WORKING THERE FOR 50 YEARS.


EPISODE 12: THE MINA KLABIN AND THE PAQUITA TWO BUILDINGS LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL REGION OF SÃO PAULO, BUILT ONLY 20 YEARS APART. THEIR HEIRS ARE STILL ALIVE AND SHOW US THEIR SECRETS IN THE EPISODE: THE MINA KLABIN AND THE PAQUITA. DESIGNED BY GREGORI WARCHAVCHIK IN 1939, THE MINA KABLIN IS STILL OWNED BY THE FAMILY, AND WHO RESCUES ITS HISTORY IS THE ARCHITECT’S SON, MAURIS. THE PAQUITA, WITH ITS PRIVILEGED VIEW TO PARQUE BUENOS AIRES, WILL BE EXPLORED AND PRESENTED TO US BY PAQUITA OSTROWITZ HERSELF, THE DAUGHTER OF THE BUILDER IN CHARGE OF THIS CONSTRUCTION WHO NAMED THE BUILDING AFTER HIS DAUGHTER, JUST A GIRL BACK THEN.


EPISODE 13: COPAN THE COPAN IS UNDOUBTEDLY ONE OF THE SYMBOLS OF THE CITY, AND DESERVES AN ENTIRE EPISODE. DESIGNED BY OSCAR NIEMEYER IN 1951 FOR THE 400-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE CITY, THE COPAN IS THE WORLD’S BIGGEST RESIDENTIAL BUILDING. WITH 120 THOUSAND METERS AND MORE THAN 1,000 APARTMENTS, THE PROPERTY IS HOME TO AN AVERAGE OF 5,000 RESIDENTS. THESE ARE GRAND NUMBERS THAT POINT TO ITS UNIQUENESS AND RICHNESS OF HISTORY, SINCE TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE CALLED IT HOME. SP BUILDINGS TALKS TO NARA ROSETTO, AN ARCHITECT AND RESIDENT ON ONE OF THE LAST FLOORS OF THE COPAN. SHE OPENS THE DOORS OF HER HOME TO SHOW WHAT THIS ALMOST MYTHICAL BUILDING HOLDS INSIDE.
