S o u r c e o f w e l l b e i n g . The Appenzellerland is a source of wellbeing. Long before the wellness trend started, guests from all over the world were coming to refresh their spirits at the rushing waterfalls, in the mud-baths and on the lofty heights. The early «tourist operators» in the most Swiss of all Swiss cantons proved to be trend-setters. In the 19 th and 20 th centuries, whey cures were extremely successful and a popular social pastime. Whey, considered a useless by-product of cheese-making, is currently making a remarkable comeback. Right up to the present day you will find the original relaxing leisure activities, although time hasn’t stood still here, either. And so today’s spa guests can find interesting contrasts between the culture of the Far East and Appenzell: traditional mud-baths, whey or Kneipp cures alongside ayurveda, tai-chi and chi-yung beauty treatments. Probably the most natural of the «natural remedies» in this area is clear fresh Appenzell air. Not surprisingly, therefore, the resorts that used to be world famous for their healthy air are still plentiful, with the «Biedermeier village» of Heiden well in the lead, located on a sunny terrace in the hills high above Lake Constance. Pure alpine air is also available in abundance on the Säntis, where on a clear day there is a view over six countries from the summit (2,500 m above sea level).
