About IFC 5-
Leadership & Career Oppurtunity
Becoming involved in a Greek organization allows students to be open to different leadership opportunities on campus. Our organizations encourage their members to be heavily involved with our many campus organizations. Each Greek organization allows their members to take on leadership positions within their chapter that will serve as a beneficial bridge to becoming leaders on campus. Alumni relationships for each chapter serves as opportunities to network and connect with older members. Alumni open up opportunities to mentor the members of their chapter and equip them with the necessary tools to be successful after college.
Scholarship & Academics Philanthropy & Service Brotherhood
Here at Appalachian State University, our fraternities hold their members to high academic standards. In order to be eligible to join a fraternity at App State, students must have at least a 2.7 college GPA, or 3.0 high school GPA for first year students. Our 16 fraternities play a big role in membership within Order of Omega, the honor society for fraternity and sorority life. This honor society has strict membership requirements, and you must receive an above average GPA to be considered. Most Fraternities offer resources, including academic advisors, study hours, and specific academic plans to help members do the best they can scholastically.
Philanthropy and service play a large role in the fraternity experience at App State. Every chapter has philanthropic efforts that range from fundraisers to service days within the community. Individual members are encouraged to get involved with chapter philanthropic and service efforts, as well as explore other opportunities to get involved within the community. The Interfraternity Council supports chapter specific initiatives and additionally provides opportunities to give back to the campus community. Recently, the IFC has held events benefitting the Boone Hospitality House, Be The Match cancer research, Boone Hunger and Health Coalition, and App Builds a Home.
Greek fraternities were founded as a network of support for men who went through similar experiences. Fraternity Life is a great way to enhance the general college experience through brotherhood and friendship. Brotherhood means building bonds between members of the Greek Community and working towards the shared goal of a better campus for all students. Brotherhood does not end once our undergraduate members leave campus. Our Greek Community individually establishes lifelong relationships.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Question: How do I join a fraternity? What is the criteria required to join?
To be eligible for IFC fraternity recruitment/membership, a first-semester student must enter with a 3.0 high school GPA. Upperclassmen must have completed twelve hours at Appalachian and have a minimum GPA of 2.7. If interested, the first step is to sign up for recruitment and then contact chapters recruitment chairs expressing interest, use this guide to start!
Question: Do I need letters of recommendation for IFC recruitment?
IFC fraternities do not require letters of recommendation for recruitment, although it is recommended to utilize any friend or family connections to reach out to chapters. A letter of recommendation does not guarantee that a bid for membership will be extended.
Question: Do IFC fraternities have chapter houses on campus?
IFC fraternities do not have chapter houses on campus. This has been a long discussed topic of advancement, but the town of Boone does not have applicable space for a "Greek Village" where fraternities could have chapter houses. Due to this, most chapter operations take place in the student union on campus.
Frequently Asked Questions 7-
Question: How will joining a fraternity affect my academics?
The fraternity & sorority life community at Appalachian State University strives for academic excellence and improved scholastic achievement. Each chapter has established a grade point average that each member must maintain to remain in good standing with the organization. Chapters also offer academic assistance to their members, such as study halls and peer tutoring. Every chapter understands that their members are students first and provide recognition to those who excel and improve their academic standing.
Question: What are the responsibilities of membership in a Fraternity?
Commitment to the principles, values, and standards, for which the inter/national organization was founded upon. Participation in chapter activities such as meetings, educational/leadership programs, community service events, and social activities. Payment of dues each semester is required to remain in good standing.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Question: What is the financial obligation to join a Fraternity?
Each organization is self-supported through dues charged to all members. In the first year of membership, a few one-time expenses are assessed. After those initial payments are made, the only recurring expenses should be annual or semester dues. Many organizations offer payment plans to assist their members.
Question: What is the time commitment involved with membership in a Fraternity?
Membership requires a substantial time commitment from every member. However, the more time a member spends with other members in their organization and at chapter activities, the more benefits they will receive from their membership. Just like any other activity, the amount of time and energy you put into your organization, the more you will get out of the experience.
Most organizations require members to have additional club or organization involvement to maintain a well-rounded experience, and most students are able to balance these and their academic obligations, in addition to part-time work. A good rule of thumb is that for most students at AppState, one to three involvements are manageable.
Frequently Asked Questions 8-
Question: What is App State's policy on Hazing?
Appalachian State University, The State of North Carolina, Office of Campus Activities, and The Interfraternity, Panhellenic, Multicultural Greek, and National Pan-Hellenic Councils do not tolerate or encourage any activities that may constitute hazing.
Question: How will joining a chapter now benefit me after college?
The lifelong friendships your student will make through their chapter will last into post-college years. Fraternity members have inter/national networks for members to use for careers and job relocations. Membership in an organization can be a lifelong experience that the member and the fraternity enjoy together. Joining as soon as possible is an investment in your future. Wherever a member ends up after college, chances are they will be able to find an alumni chapter or other members of their fraternity in the area.

Theta Chi prides itself on brotherhood, campus relations, and academics. We are looking for high-quality and high character men looking to make an impact on the app state and boone community. In Fall of 2022 we were awarded winners of Homecoming Week with Kappa Delta. The past three summers, we have been awarded the chapter excellence by Theta Chi Fraternity. We look forward to meeting all potential new members and wish the best of luck this year. spiersnw@appstate.edu torzsacr@appstate.edu
