Conference Opening Reception & Awards Presentation This annual conference offers the opportunity to recognize and honor greatness in the landscape design field. The awards being presented during the evening include: Landscape Design Awards—both professional and student winners, Landscape Designer of the Year, Award of Distinction, Harry Schuster Service Award and Chapter Service Awards.

The reception will have hors d'oeuvres and time to look at project design boards and speak one-on-one with the winning designers. Dessert will be combined with an awards presentation and slideshow.

Concurrent Sessions The Design of Alzheimer's Gardens Jack Carman, FASLA, LLA, PP Design for Generations, LLC Outdoor gardens are an important part of senior communities, especially those areas that have been specifically designed for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have shown that the outdoor environment can have a great impact on an individual’s mental, physical, social and spiritual well-being.

It has been shown that maintaining a connection with nature balances circadian rhythms, reduces blood pressure and provides essential health benefits such as Vitamin D. Positive interaction with the out-of-doors has also been shown to reduce agitation, improve sleep and increase appetite. Seeing familiar elements associated with outdoor areas, such as colorful flowers, familiar birds, or even a common broom can help trigger positive memories. The smell of fresh basil or lavender and a newly cut lawn will also bring back pleasant thoughts from the past.

Garden programs that encourage activity and connectedness vary from region to region. Outdoor reading sessions, planting vegetables for use in meals and growing fresh herbs for decorations are a few of the many program examples. Regional characteristics that will help a person relate to the garden may include a fishing boat if it is a maritime community, or a farm implement if it is an agrarian community. These unique features can also be incorporated into the programming of a garden. Examples of existing gardens that have been created and programmed for the benefit of those with Alzheimer’s disease will be presented.

This session will speak to the questions, “What have we learned in the development of safe therapeutic outdoor areas?” and “What are staff and caregivers across the country currently doing in outdoor areas to maintain a connectedness with these special older adults?” And finally,” What are the outcomes of existing Dementia Gardens and where are these gardens headed?”

The Art and Craft of Landscape Photography: Audio Visual Presentation Allen Rokach Allen Rokach Photography Great and effective landscape photographs don’t just happen.

They’re shaped by the combination of raw natural material, superior photographic vision and refined technical skill. Learning to judge the raw material critically is the first step. What does the landscape look like? What is its form, shape, texture and color? What is the impact of light on the subject? Do you want to represent the relationship of the specific landform to the environment? What is the best exposure based on the subject's colors and the available light? What can be done in “after capture” to improve the image?

The ‘Unenslaved' Perennial Garden: The Evolution of Perennial Plant Communities Roy Diblik Northwind Perennial Farm Roy’s thoughtful way to design perennial plantings welcomes fresh contemporary styles and plant diversity integrated with responsible maintenance concerns. Using a selection of regionally dependable perennials, endless natural plant patterns can be constructed, each relating to time and cost to maintain. He will discuss the developing partnership between the gardener, the plants and nature, always knowing that the beauty is in the doing.

Phil Maddux, ASLA Phil Maddux Landscape Architect, LLC This session will explore the answers to the question, “What is included in a garden?”

Such questions help you evaluate a subject so you can create a mental picture of the image you want to create. Without this previsualized image, which is the essence of the photographic vision, you’ll have a hard time deciding which piece of equipment and which technique to use. To become a proficient landscape photographer, you must interpret the landscape your eyes see. You must create the image your camera’s lens and sensor can make out of the basic elements of the scene in your mind’s eye. Using examples of his work at PepsiCo and other gardens, Allen will discuss his vision and the art and craft of how the images are made.

This is a must-attend event where attendees learn from both exhibitors and their peers. The Showcase includes door prizes, including a 2015 APLD Professional Membership and items donated from our exhibitors. Please bring your business cards for the drawings and make note that you must be present to win!

Certification Coaching One-on-one certification coaching will be available in the APLD exhibitor area for anyone looking for assistance with the APLD certification process.

Design Charette Facilitators: Jack Carman and Phil Maddux A charette offers attendees a quick demonstration about graphic thinking. Attendees will break into groups to work on specific areas of a garden. The groups will then reconvene at a central gathering place to share their ideas and gather feedback from everyone. At this point, the groups will divide again and develop a hybrid or collage for the final process.

This will be a wonderfully creative and inspirational session for all involved!

Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals (AOLP) Lighting Demonstration Matthew Broyles, CLVLT, COLD Michael Deo, CLVLT Polasek Gardens Join members of the Association of Outdoor Lighting Professions for an after-dark demonstration of lighting techniques at Polasek Gardens. The design of good lighting adheres to many of the same principles used in garden design and helps to bring your outdoor spaces to life after the sun goes down. Learn about fixture placement, various techniques and how certain plant material reacts to light. LED is all the buzz in outdoor lighting today—learn what it can and can’t do for your designs.

Lighting designers will be available for Q&A discussion during and after the demonstration. Hors d'oeuvres and cash bar will be available.
