February GBM

Chair Fair

We hosted our first GBM of the spring semester on February 4th. This meeting featured our Chair Fair, where current chairs were available to discuss their roles and the exciting events they organized. This open-house-style event was a great opportunity to explore leadership positions for the next school year!

I became a member of APhA because I wanted to have the opportunity to explore and attend the diverse events and fields within the organization. Specifically, I have been an active member of the policy committee and have learned how pharmacists can advocate for their profession in both the state and federal governments with events such as legislative days.

Currently, I am interested in nuclear pharmacy. To me, the present and future developments of technology in the field are exciting advancements in the level of personalized care, allowing pharmacists to make a specific and tangible difference in patient outcomes.

APhA-ASP x OLEF POCT

On Monday, February 3rd, APhA-ASP Operation Heart and OLEF hosted a point-of-care testing event at the Grove Street Farmers Market, offering health screenings like blood pressure and glucose tests. It aimed to promote health awareness, empower individuals to take charge of their wellness, and connect the community with vital healthcare resources in an open, welcoming environment.

Legislative Day Prep

On February 6th, the Policy Committee took proactive steps to advocate for pharmacy-related legislative issues by drafting and sending letters to state legislators in preparation for Legislative Days. These letters outlined our key policy concerns, including opposition to Senate Bill 294 and House Bill 273, and emphasized the vital role pharmacists play in patient care. By reaching out ahead of our inperson meetings, we aimed to inform legislators about the impact of these bills and strengthen our advocacy efforts during Legislative Days.

Legislative Day

For this year ’ s Legislative Day, we partnered with SSHP to organize and facilitate meetings with key legislative offices, including those of Representative Robin Bartleman, Senator Jonathan Martin, Representative Chad Johnson, and Representative Gallop Franklin. Our primary focus during these discussions was advocating on issues related to Senate Bill 294 and House Bill 273, both of which carry significant implications for pharmacy practice and patient care.

Legislative Day

We strongly voiced our opposition to SB 294, which seeks to impose unnecessary restrictions on pharmacists' ability to collaboratively manage chronic cardiac conditions. Such limitations would hinder patient access to essential, pharmacist-led care, ultimately affecting health outcomes. Additionally, we opposed HB 273, a bill that proposes allowing pharmacies to operate without a pharmacist’s direct supervision, relying solely on pharmacy technicians. This change raises concerns about patient safety eutical care provided.

Legislative Day

Beyond our legislative meetings, we also had the opportunity to actively participate in the Health Fair at the Florida Capitol alongside students from various pharmacy schools, including USF, FAMU, LECOM, and others. During this event, we engaged with legislators, government officials, and members of the public, educating them on key health topics such as hypertension, diabetes management, and smoking cessation. We also provided valuable health screenings by performing blood pressure checks and A1C readings, reinforcing the essential role of pharmacists in preventative care and chronic disease management.
