These were the Portland Business Journal's most-read stories in 2023

A survey of the stories in which PBJ readers were most interested during 2023 (each logging tens of thousands of page views and visits) suggests that our beat structure is solid. That is, the top 10 most-read stories include selections on commercial real estate, technology, sports business and wine. Here are those most-read stories from the past year.

News about downtown office buildings losing big-ticket tenants regularly piqued readers' interest. Indeed, there was, in August, word that a major Portland company would leave its downtown headquarters, a theme that emerged several times during the year. The fall was dominated by concern over the fate of Oregon State University (and Washington State University, which has a healthy Portland alumni population) after other schools left the Pac 12. The Corvallis institution eventually reached a resolution on the matter this month. Our lists of top schools generally draws attention from both those seeking more insight into where to send their children as well as those who disagree with the methodology used to ascertain the rankings. Here's one of those lists, which gauged the region's top high schools. Jonathan Bach, the PBJ's commercial real estate reporter, uncovered several doings regarding such properties as Montgomery Park. In one instance, a lender foreclosed on a loan tied to the Northwest Portland complex. Competition for Intel emerged in a big way, as the company faces two businesses poised to snatch significant market share from the chipmaking giant. The Kroger/Albertsons combination intrigued PBJ readers who are understandably curious about how the giant grocers will continue to serve neighborhoods when the arrangement is finalized. Here's one such proposal.


Portlanders love hearing what those in other locales think about us. What the Seattle Times thinks about us, isn't good. Alaska Airlines made lots of news this year, including its November announcement that it would increase its reach into Europe and India.
