Contractors in 36 Oregon locales may want to hone their seismic upgrade skills.

Business Oregon, the state's economic development arm, said Wednesday it has awarded nearly $90 million for projects that are eligible for the Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program. Of that money, $26.1 million will back emergency service projects while $55.8 million will support school projects.

The program provides funds "for the seismic rehabilitation of critical public buildings, particularly public schools and emergency services facilities in Oregon." Business Oregon chose the recipients from more than 100 applications.

The projects back seismic-related structural improvements, architecture, engineering and project management. Demolitions, rebuilds and new construction aren't eligible, nor are "solely nonstructural projects," such as per Business Oregon, chimney removals or renovations.

Fourteen of the projects will renovate facilities occupied by emergency service providers while 22 will enhance schools,
