HOW TO COMBAT Burnout

Burnout is a serious condition that can have health and work consequences. Learn if you have burnout, what to do about it, and how to prevent it.

• Burnout is recognized by the World Health Organization as an occupational phenomenon.

• Unlike fatigue, burnout a ects your emotional health and reduces your self-e cacy.

• Overcoming burnout takes time and usually requires a good support system at work and at home.

The term “burnout” has become part of the everyday lexicon, putting a name to the symptoms of fatigue, lack of motivation and declining productivity that are linked to overwork.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has even recognized burnout as an occupational phenomenon. The group’s definition serves as o cial acknowledgment that workplace burnout represents a real problem.

WHAT IS BURNOUT?

Burnout is a recognized workplace

phenomenon characterized by severe fatigue, feelings of dread and negativity, and reduced e ectiveness in the workplace as a result of overworking. It is the logical conclusion of a work/life balance that is dramatically tilted in favor of working at the expense of quality of life.

According to the WHO, “Burnout is included in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an occupational phenomenon. It is not classified as a medical condition.”

That’s an important clarification. The definition of burnout goes deeper, with the WHO describing burnout as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions:

• Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion.

• Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job.

• Reduced professional e cacy. Burnout refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be

applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.

Feelings of energy depletion and exhaustion aren’t uncommon among workers, but the mental distance and reduced self-belief make burnout a more concerning issue than just fatigue. Employees and business owners should diligently monitor how they feel on the job. If you find a long week becoming a long month and feelings of increased negativity emerge more often, you may be headed for burnout.

HOW CAN YOU OVERCOME BURNOUT?

Once you become burned out, that feeling doesn’t go away overnight. Take things one day at a time and be patient during the process. You won’t overcome burnout with a single walk in the park, so be ready for a few weeks or months of altering your routine and creating healthier workplace habits.

1. Acknowledge that you are burned out. By acknowledging that you are burned out, you give yourself a reason to make needed changes in your lifestyle and perspective. Don’t be afraid to ask for support from co-workers, family and friends.

2.

Reset your priorities.

Reaching burnout often means you’ve been putting work above personal responsibilities or hobbies. Take the time to reevaluate your priorities if you find yourself experiencing burnout.

3. Evaluate your options. Take concrete steps to make your work life better. Consider the following actions:

• Reducing your hours

• Taking a leave of absence

• Applying for a promotion

• Gaining more control over your schedule

• Clarifying your job expectations

• Moving to a di erent job within the company

• Reporting a workplace bully or harasser

• Seeking a job with another company or in a di erent field

4. Seek out support.

Support can come from your employer as well as from family, friends and co-workers. Approach your supervisor or HR to determine which of the above steps is possible and put a plan in motion.

5. Practice self-care.

Recovering from burnout is a process. It requires increased commitment to taking care of yourself emotionally and physically. It’s possible to overcome burnout, but the process takes time. Be willing to put in at least a few hours each week to restore your body and mind to the way they’re supposed to feel. Try the following self-care ideas:

• Practice a relaxing activity such as yoga, tai chi or nature walks.

• Get some exercise, either alone or with others.

• Restore your well-being with good sleep habits.

• Focus on experiencing the present without judgment.

• Do activities that bring you joy and spend time with people you love.

RADIO-FREQUENCY IDENTIFICATION

Scaling back from potential threats and future cutting-edge technologies, lets dive into something many of us use every day, though we may not know a whole bunch about it: Radio-Frequency Identification or RFID. RFIDs are fairly similar to barcodes as they both store identification data that can be read to process information; however, RFID has additional uses because of how it specifically works.

So, how does it work?

First, digital data is encoded into RFID Tags which are made up of a small integrated circuit and an antenna, or Smart labels, which are a fusion between RFID Tags and barcode technology, that can then be scanned by any RFID enabled device to read the data stored there. Unlike barcodes, the presence of integrated circuits allows RFIDs to be read outside line-of-sight. It makes it far more e cient for identification cards among other devices.

Are there any drawbacks?

The major drawback of RFID enabled software comes with the age-old problem that any security conscious person is painfully aware of: the more accessible a technology is, the easier it is to be compromised, and RFID is no di erent. If you’ve noticed, a few years ago, there was a great push to use “tap” enabled chips for credit and debit cards, but now-a-days using them isn’t as common. This was in fact RFID being used to make transactions faster, however, people began using RFID trackers to steal credit card information from people on the street. Since you do not need line of sight to scan and prompt the tag for all of its information, you could e ectively pick someone’s pocket just by walking close or bumping into them. Thankfully, there are countermeasures that can be used to stop this, such as wallets that have material to block such transmissions to protect your financial information.
