Awards Luncheon honors inspirational women who are role models in their personal and professional lives, and whose trailblazing leadership and philanthropic efforts make a difference for our community’s youth. Alongside them, A Place Called Home celebrates our own special group of young women–APCH members who are empowered and committed to improving their own lives and contributing to their communities and the world.

Welcome to the APCH 2022 GirlPower Awards Luncheon, our first live audience event since 2019! We are super excited to be sharing this special day with you, as we celebrate the young women of the APCH GirlPower program, and recognize three adult “sheroes” who are leading the way for the girls and for all of us.

On behalf of the GirlPower girls and the hundreds of other youth and their families that APCH serves every day, thank you for joining us!

At a time when many of us are feeling overwhelmed by all the bad news and everything that is happening in the world around us and wondering how to make a difference, your presence and support today will change the lives of young people working to overcome challenges and adversity in their own lives and go on to change the world.

In particular, APCH loves and supports the idea of more women in positions to impact … well, everything. When you meet the GirlPower girls, we think you’ll see what we see… the future.

And it looks hopeful.

Our Mission

A Place Called Home provides a safe, nurturing environment with proven programs in the arts, education and wellness for the young people in South Central to help them improve their economic conditions and develop healthy, fulfilling and purposeful lives.

GirlPower The APCH GirlPower Program empowers young women to overcome societal stereotypes and traditional gender roles, to stand up for themselves and advocate for others, and to pursue their aspirations with rigor and vigor.

Awards Recipients Linda Garcia CEO & Founder, In Luz We Trust

EQUITY EMPOWERMENT AWARD A Cali native and proud Latina, Linda Garcia spent 17 years working in the TV and film industry helping well-recognized TV networks, movie studios and streaming services build programming for the U.S. Hispanic market. Despite enjoying the work, Linda knew there was more to life than working to make someone else rich. Eventually, she took the knowledge she’d gained and used it to launch the Let There Be Luz podcast: a weekly podcast aimed to channel one’s spiritual journey.

In 2019, after relocating to Dallas, Linda’s spiritual journey led her to what she considers her life’s purpose: to help the Latinx community heal the generational money wounds that prevent them from achieving wealth.

In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, Linda launched her first stock market course for beginners and created a rapidly growing community of Latinx investors on Patreon and Instagram known as In Luz We Trust. Today Linda is a published children’s book author, a self-made business owner, and a guiding Luz for thousands of BIPOC who are looking to break free from limiting and toxic money mentalities.

In Luz We Trust is an experience-led online community with courses that address limiting beliefs prevalent in communities of color, with a step-by-step component that simplifies the stock market, helping to navigate fears that are tied to our upbringing. Through this conversation, we hope to demystify money and investing, help identify common money wounds we subconsciously hold, gain clarity, and move towards taking action in investing.

Diana Pinto Executive Director, South Central LAMP

COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP & SERVICE AWARD Diana Pinto has dedicated her life to working in the nonprofit sector. As the daughter of an immigrant mother, who grew up in Los Angeles under very difficult financial situations, she understood the importance of community support. Her biggest desire was to ensure that families had safety nets, as she did. For that reason she has worked in the non-profit field most of her life. Eventually she really connected with South Central LAMP’s mission and joined South Central LAMP in March 2009 as the Family Advocate, was promoted to Program Director in November 2009, and named Executive Director in January 2014.

She has been Executive Director for nearly eight of her 13 years at South Central LAMP. During her tenure, Diana has been instrumental in the organization's successful program outcomes, high retention and attendance rates, increased financial stability, as well as creating new partnerships and strengthening existing collaborations. In addition to augmenting program services for the families South Central LAMP serves, Diana has brought attention to the needs of the South Central community at large. Diana has a master’s degree in Latin American Studies, with an emphasis in Grassroots Organizations. She has an incredible commitment to the South Central Los Angeles community especially to the immigrant community who often find themselves with less resources, support and allies.

Awards Recipients Maria S. Salinas President & CEO, Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce

WOMEN LEADING THE WAY AWARD Maria S. Salinas is the President & CEO of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, the largest business association in Los Angeles County representing member companies and serving the interests of more than 235,000 businesses across the Los Angeles region. Ms. Salinas took the helm of the organization in August of 2018 and became the first woman and Latina to lead the Chamber in its 132-year history. An accomplished business woman, entrepreneur and a determined community leader, Ms. Salinas’ business acumen and financial expertise provides her with the right experience to lead the L.A. Area Chamber.

Ms. Salinas, a steward of the Chamber’s new vision, “A Thriving Region for All,” has re-imagined the role of the Chamber. The Chamber looks to the future with a vision to build an inclusive economy and lead in three pillar areas of focus: advocacy work, global engagement and through community collaboration for economic growth and mobility. The Los Angeles region, which is the 14th largest economy in the world, and the Chamber membership represents a broad spectrum of industries, small businesses, corporations, academic institutions and nonprofits, which are all examples that the Los Angeles economy is diverse, dynamic and that business is a force for good.

Ms. Salinas is an appointee to Governor Gavin Newsom’s Commission on the Future of Work and named to his Business and Jobs Recovery Task Force. She was appointed to the US Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of 100, a distinction reserved for the top 100 Chambers across the country. She represents the Los Angeles business community in state- wide policy initiatives with the Coalition of Regional Economic Association Leaders (R.E.A.L.), she is a member of the Board of Directors of Mobility 21, a regional transportation effort, and an appointee of Mayor Eric Garcetti to the MEXLA Commission, a foreign policy initiative between Mexico and Los Angeles. She serves on the Board of Directors of The Music Center, Pacific Council, UnidosUS and Southern California Leadership Network among others.

LUNCHEON HOST Rachel Brown Anchor and Reporter, ABC7 Eyewitness News Rachel Brown is the weekend morning anchor and a general assignment reporter for ABC7 Eyewitness News. She joined the station in June of 2019 and is thrilled to be a member of the Los Angeles’ #1 news team. Rachel is a native of Chicago’s South Side. She received a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Illinois. From there she went on to pursue a master’s degree in communication management, and graduated from Northwestern University one year later. She landed her first reporting job not far from home in South Bend, Indiana. There, she received her first Emmy nomination for her reporting during a winter storm.

On the search for warmer weather, Rachel’s next job took her south to Charlotte, North Carolina. She joined NBC Charlotte and served as a weekday evening anchor and reporter for three years. Outside of the newsroom Rachel is passionate about kids. During her time in Charlotte she volunteered weekly at Levine Children’s Hospital. Now, she volunteers at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. Since moving to LA, Rachel has also begun studying Spanish.

Rachel is so excited to serve Southern California. She loves trying new restaurants and exploring all Los Angeles has to offer.
