WELCOME TO EXTENDED DAY! In an effort to streamline registration and improve the program-selection process, we have expanded the Extended Day umbrella to include: Extended Day Care (EDC) After-School Activities Music Clubs Private Music Lessons Student Clubs (AV Club & Quiz Bowl) UCAL Athletic Training Camps All of these programs are now available for registration in one place, the Extended Day Registration Website. While the registration process has changed, the heart of Extended Day remains the same. Our Statement of Goals to our students remains strong as we continue to: Create a relaxed, trusting, intimate atmosphere where children are encouraged to pursue their own interest, develop friendships, and grow in confidence, independence and respect for themselves and others Provide a caring staff that shows genuine respect for the children and have confidence in each child’s esteem Create a stable environment that is inviting, comfortable, attractive, orderly, and manageable by children and offers a happy, exciting place to be Provide for the children a variety of developmentally appropriate activities Form a schedule that allows time for each child to observe, reflect, and become absorbed in activities according to his/her own interest and talents Give individual guidance to children based on careful observation of each child’s needs while keeping the parents’ views and goals in mind We look forward to continuing to serve the needs of both our parents and students and are excited for Fall 2019!

GENERAL INFORMATION REGISTRATION: Registration for these programs is now divided into two semesters (fall and spring) except for private music lessons, UCAL, and athletic training camps. The Fall semester runs from August through December. The Spring semester runs from January through May. All registrations will take place online on the Extended Day Registration Website: https://aoshouston.campbrainregistration.com/

PAYMENT: Payment for Extended Day programs will be billed through SMART tuition. Semester or monthly payment plans are available.

SCHEDULE CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS: If you wish to change your schedule, please contact the Extended Day office at 713-470-5608. Please note: After-School Activities can be dropped for a full refund less a $50 fee per class through September 20, 2019. EDC schedules can be dropped for a full refund less a $50 fee per "batch" of changes per child. Batch changes are multiple changes made to your child's EDC schedule at one time. After September 20, 2019, all charges for Fall 2019 Extended Day programs are non-refundable and nontransferable.

EXTENDED DAY CARE

MONDAY - FRIDAY

Extended Day Care (EDC) is available Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and on certain holidays. Parents may register for only morning-care, only aftercare, or for both morning and after-care. Registration options are available for as little as one day a week and as many as five days a week. The prices listed below are for the fall semester (August-December). Upon registration, you will have the option of paying the entire semester at once or selecting a monthly payment plan.

EXTENDED DAY CARE Fall Holiday Care Package Parents needing childcare during school holidays, early dismissals, and conference days should register for the Fall Holiday Care Package. The Fall Holiday Care Package includes: three full-days during the Greek Festival holiday, early dismissal for Grandparents Day, early dismissal for Christmas break, and Parent-Teacher Conference days. Cost: $240 *Students enrolled in either the five-day after-care or the five-day morning and after-care option do not need to register for the additional Fall Holiday Care Package. Holiday care is included in those options. Drop-ins Drop-ins are available to accommodate singular-event schedule changes. Parents can choose between two options: drop-in until 4:30 PM or a drop-in until 6:00 PM. Drop-ins can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance through the Extended Day Registration System. Cost: $35/day (drop-in until 4:30 PM), $60/day (drop-in until 6:00 PM)

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

MONDAY

Spanish (PK-K) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Angie Ramirez (AOS Faculty) Cost: $340/semester After-school Spanish provides students the opportunity to learn in a small, fun, and relaxed environment. Students experience the Spanish culture and language through music, vocabulary, games, conversational activities, and auditory and oral expressions. This fall, students will learn the following introductory vocabulary: - Basic greetings (September) - Numbers and seasons (October) - Family (November) - Colors and shapes (December) Â Idea Lab: Maker Studio: WoodShop Jr. & Toy Mod Shop (2nd-4th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Idea Lab Cost: $390/semester In this Idea Lab, students learn all the tools and basic techniques they need to make fun and creative wood designs. Students work in their own Toy Mod Shop as they mix and modify the designs of some of their favorite toys. They also recreate their own versions of popular toys, past and present.

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Drama (Kindergarten) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Kiki Przewlocki Cost: $340/semester After-school Drama offers a group experience rich in creative, theatrical exploration. Students experience a spectrum of imaginative and inventive dramatic fun including improvisation games, scene making, informal presentations, and performance scripts. Lego (K-4th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Sally Douglas and Susan Grygiel Cost: $340/semester After-school Lego is for students who love being creative and who have fun building with Lego pieces. Lego activities will range in scope and include several STEM-related explorations such as building Lego zip-lines, constructing Legoerupting volcanoes, building Lego skyscrapers, and launching Lego hot air balloons. The students will also be exposed to the use of robotics using the WeDo app. Seed to Plate (4th-5th grade) Time: 3:30-5:00 PM Instructors: Tiffany Utterson and Amy Airhart (AOS parents) Cost: $365/semester Seed to Plate makes healthy food fun through comprehensive, experiential learning. This program introduces students to the entire cycle of food along with taste and flavor combinations, techniques, nutrition awareness, and skills that will serve them for a lifetime. Students participate in gardening activities and cooking with plants from the AOS rooftop garden. Seed to Plate students learn: 1) New, delicious, and nutritious recipes, 2) How to plan and prepare healthy meals, 3) Organic gardening and plant life cycles, and 4) Basic culinary skills and kitchen safety.

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Craftopia (5th-8th grade) Time: 3:30-4:45 PM Instructor: Meredith Wise (AOS Faculty) Cost: $350/semester Join Mrs. Wise in the art studio for this exciting, new crafting class. Students experiment with non-traditional art materials and techniques such as poured paint, alcohol inks, paper mache, recycled material creations, polymer clay, etc. This class is the place to try all those cool projects we see online! Come experiment and get creative with Craftopia this semester!

TUESDAY

Crafting Fun (1st-4th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Mary Katherine Holliday Cost: $350/semester Do you have a budding Martha Stewart on your hands? Join us for some Crafting Fun this summer! Students learn how to make amazing and inventive crafts using new and recycled materials. This class gives students the tools to be able to express themselves through art in a positive manner by fostering their creativity through valuable, inspiring, and fun art projects. Mad About Hoops (2nd-4th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Tasia Markantonis Cost: $340/semester In Mad About Hoops, students learn fun and impressive hula hoop tricks and choreography. Through skill development and game-play, students improve balance, stamina, and self-confidence. Classes are fun for boys and girls, and we provide all of the equipment needed for in-class use. Every student enrolled in Mad About Hoops will be invited to perform at a halftime show for a Rice University football game in Fall 2019!

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Idea Lab: Investigative Science Lab: Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors & Science Over Time (PK-1st grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Idea Lab Cost: $340/semester In this Idea Lab, students discover the fundamentals of nature and the history of science. They learn the beginning steps of the scientific method and put them to use through hands-on projects that develop their critical thinking and deductive reasoning. Students explore questions such as why the sun rises and sets, why the moon changes shape, why we have seasons, what causes craters, how asteroids function, and the history of meteors. Idea Lab: Applying Design Thinking: 3D Printing to Solve a Problem & Futuristic Dwellings (5th-8th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Idea Lab Cost: $340/semester In this Idea Lab, students apply their 3D input and printing skills to create a solution for a problem they've identified in their community. Projects can include designing jewelry and accessories, products for the home, games, puzzles, biomedical solutions, aviation design - the possibilities are endless! Students also learn more advanced 3D printing techniques such as creating support structures, using infill, and printing with different temperatures. Have you ever wondered what a house or a school from the future would look like and consist of? In the second half of this class, students design futuristic dwellings and buildings.

Artopia (1st-2nd grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Amy Ailor Cost: $350/semester In this class, students learn how to create 3D sculptures and use 3D qualities in collages. Students learn the painting techniques of Eric Carle to support their collage and sculpture projects. Found and recycled materials as well as crafted and handmade papers are incorporated in the class projects. AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Idea Lab: Design Based Engineering: Opposites Attract- Magnetic Study & Defying Gravity (PK-K) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Idea Lab Cost: $340/semester In this Idea Lab, students learn about magnets and flight principles. They explore how magnets are used to pick things up, different engineered gadgets that use magnets, and how magnets sustain certain buildings. Additionally, students learn about levitation as they investigate how balloons float and airplanes fly even with the everpresent force of gravity. GoBots! (5th-8th grades) Time: 3:30-5:00 PM Instructor: Alicia McDonald (AOS Faculty) Cost: $340/semester Let’s break with tradition as we integrate GoPros with Robotics. Build your robot, modify mechanical wonders, and then mount your team’s GoPro to capture all our activities and challenges! Join us as we combine IR technology and digital media for next level robotics!

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Chess (1st-4th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Game Think Cost: $340/semester Game Think offers chess lessons to students of all skill levels and encourages fair and friendly play. On day one, overall skill will be assessed, and students will be placed into appropriate groups. The following lessons will teach each student chess fundamentals: piece movement, piece value, setting up the board, and basic algebraic notation. From there, students will learn basic checkmates, opening strategies, and tactics. Chess is a timeless and endlessly beneficial game for all ages. Learning chess at a young age has been proven to help improve focus, strategy, and critical thinking. Fine Art (5th-8th grade) Time: 3:30-4:45 PM Instructor: Meredith Wise (AOS Faculty) Cost: $350/semester Join Mrs. Wise in the art studio! This class focuses on skill-building in the fine arts. Students practice advanced techniques in drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting, and ceramic sculpture. This class is great for students who find art relaxing and fun. Â Idea Lab: Entrepreneurship: My Very Own TV Show! & My Very Own Cafe! (2nd-4th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Idea Lab Cost: $340/semester In this Idea Lab, students develop their very own concept for a tv show and learn what goes into creating a TV show that is broadcasted nationwide. In the second half of this class, students create and run their own cafe. Students choose their menu, design their restaurant, and learn about maintaining a business in the food industry.

AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES The Paint Box (3rd-4th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Amy Ailor (AOS Faculty) Cost: $350/semester Would you like to become the next Monet or Picasso? Â Would you like to enhance your artistic skills? In this class, students refine their compositional skills and design skills using learned techniques to create watercolor and acrylic paintings. Projects reflect art history, imagination, and still life subject matter. Little Geniuses Chess (PK-K) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: The Knight School Cost: $384/semester Little Geniuses is a chess-song singing, laughing, chess-tourney, dancing, chess clock-slapping, zany chess video, puppet show introduction to chess and being the smart kid in class. Little Geniuses puts on a high-energy 60-minute chess practice in which kids play chess for Mardi Gras beads, compete weekly for one of 27 brightly-colored silicone wristbands, and look forward each week to our 22 daily activities. AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Great Orators - Leadership Speech and Debate (5th-8th grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Natasha Cruz Cost: $340/semester Great Orators - Leadership Speech and Debate is a fun, dynamic, and engaging program for young leaders and future decision-makers. Students learn the fundamentals of public speaking and argumentation techniques. Each week, they are taught a new word, a new speaking skill, and how to critically analyze and debate about current affairs. This regular practice enables students to communicate and articulate their thoughts and ideas confidently and clearly. Furthermore, students learn to give and receive feedback so they can feel proud of their achievements and pinpoint areas of improvement. Skills learned in the Great Orators class include leadership, time management, organization, note-taking skills, critical thinking, voice elocution, vocabulary, body language, active listening, grammar, and argumentation. Idea Lab: Culinary Arts: Kitchen FUNdamentals & Cooking with Books (1st grade) Time: 3:30-4:30 PM Instructor: Idea Lab Cost: $390/semester In this Idea Lab, our youngest chefs tackle the very basics of cooking. Students learn to have fun preparing and serving different recipes. They master kitchen safety and learn a host of simple, but fulfilling recipes. In the second half of this class, students use their favorite storybooks as inspiration for exploring recipes and creating art projects.

Middle School Chorus (year-round, 5th-8th grade) Time: 7:00-7:50 AM Instructor: Natalie Gray (AOS Faculty) Cost: $20/semester plus the purchasing of proper concert attire for fall and spring The Middle School Chorus is a vocal ensemble open to all skill levels (no audition required). Chorus members learn proper vocal technique, ear training, sight singing, and performance skills. The repertoire is very diverse, ranging from classical to contemporary music. There are three major concerts each year: Christmas Concert (December), pARTnerschools Collaboration Concert (March/April), and Spring Concert (May). Additionally, this year, the MS Chorus will perform at a Houston Dynamo game on September 11 at 7:30 PM. Audio/Visual Club (5th-8th grade) Time: 12:30-1:30 PM Instructors: Seth Rowoldt and Natalie Gray (AOS Faculty) Cost: Free In AV Club, students learn the basics of stagecraft, videography, editing, and photography. They also learn the technical skills necessary to operate a light board, a sound board, and a sound system. The AV Club is used for several school events including the 7th and 8th-grade musicals, Lower School performances, and many more.

Quiz Bowl (5th-8th grade) Time: 7:00-7:50 AM Instructors: Natalie McAfee and Alicia McDonald (AOS Faculty) Cost: Free Quiz Bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more. The defining feature of quiz bowl is the use of a “buzzer system” which allows players to interrupt the reading of a question when they know the answer. This club competes in several Houston-area competitions and sometimes in state or national competitions.

PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS

Private Voice Lessons Date and Time: as available Instructors: Natalie Gray (AOS Faculty) and Julie Strauser Cost: $45/30-minute lesson, $67.50/45-minute lesson, $90/60-minute lesson. Areas covered: healthy singing, expansion of repertoire knowledge, and sight singing/ear training. All musical styles are taught, but the focus is on the foundations of classical and musical theatre styles. You will be contacted after registering to arrange lesson times, but lesson availability is not guaranteed. Furthermore, credit will not be issued for no-shows or for canceled lessons. Make-up lessons will only be arranged if the instructor cancels a lesson. Private Guitar Lessons Date and Time: as available Instructor: Jim Thibodeaux Cost: $45/30-minute lesson, $67.50/45-minute lesson, $90/60-minute lesson. Guitar lessons will explore chord play, rhythm, melody, and songwriting. Students will establish a good practice routine as well as learn proper guitar care. PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS Private Piano Lessons Date and Time: as available Instructor: AOS Piano Studio Cost: $35/30-minute lesson The AOS Piano Studio is well known throughout the music community of Houston. Lessons are given by current Master’s and Doctorate students from Rice University and the University of Houston as well as some professional piano teachers in the area. Students must have a piano instrument to practice on at home and must practice at least 15 minutes a day.You will be contacted after registering to arrange lesson times, but lesson availability is not guaranteed. Furthermore, credit will not be issued for no-shows or for canceled lessons. Makeup lessons will only be arranged if the instructor cancels a lesson.

UNITED CHURCH ATHLETIC LEAGUE UCAL (PK-6th) Cost: $200/season/sport The United Church Athletic League (UCAL) provides the opportunity for AOS students in PK-6th grade to participate in athletic teams throughout the school year. UCAL has three seasons: fall, winter, and spring. Fall Season Soccer is available for all students in Kindergarten-6th grade. Fall season practices begin in August and games run from September through the first week in November. Winter Season Basketball is available for all students in 2nd-6th grade. Winter season runs November-January. Spring Season Volleyball is available for all girls in 4th-6th grade. Soccer is available for all students in PK-6th. Â Spring season runs March-May. The UCAL registration fee includes a UCAL jersey, team photo, individual photo, and a participation trophy. UCAL teams are coached by parent-volunteers. All parentvolunteers are asked to attend a coaches meeting.
