The 2020-2021 school year was one that truly put our flexibility and adaptability to the test. We reinvented
seemingly every aspect of life at AOS to guarantee the safety of our community in service of the AOS mission. Due to the innumerable sacrifices of our students, parents, faculty, and staff, we were able to open our campus to in-person instruction and provide our students with the strong education for which AOS is known. This privilege was not available to many children throughout the country, and I am truly grateful to everyone who contributed their time, talent, and resources to make this possible for our students. One of the most difficult decisions we made during the 2020-2021 school year was to temporarily close our campus to parents and visitors. In a normal year, our daily interactions with our students’ families are a huge part of what makes AOS such a special place. Nevertheless, our community found new and unique ways to support our school. From bleacher cut-outs at athletic games to a restructured, completely outdoor Olympics, you kept the AOS spirit going at a time when we could not always physically come together as a community. Your support did not end there as you helped us achieve a record in Annual Fund contributions. This surplus was appreciated more than ever in a year where we needed to build out additional classrooms, purchase new devices, and install countless plexiglass shields. As I reflect on life during a pandemic, our commitment to educating hearts and minds feels more important than ever, and I am endlessly grateful to be at the helm of such a caring and dedicated community. It is a true honor and privilege. Thank you, again, for sharing your gifts and for being a donor.

A WORD FROM
THE BOARD CHAIR
Dear AOS family, It is fitting that the wisdom of our founders and predecessor trustees continues to show us the way in this 50th year anniversary of our school. I could have never imagined that the promise of the AOS mission to provide a “secure” environment would be such an urgent priority. This year, however, thanks to the extraordinary work of the AOS administration, faculty and staff, our students were certainly safe and secure. Our AOS community (including our students!) demonstrated courage, leadership, resilience and flexibility in approaching the 2020-2021 school year. We are thankful to all of them and to our AOS families for supporting the efforts of the school. We are also incredibly thankful to all of you, our donors, for your unwavering and enthusiastic support during this most challenging time. Because of you, the AOS Annual Fund had a fantastic year which enabled the school to remain on firm financial footing despite the expenses incurred to provide a “secure and stimulating” school year during a pandemic. In addition, thanks to the generosity and commitment of our capital campaign donors, the debt from the Carry the Torch Phase 1 construction is now approximately $1 million, and we are ahead of schedule on paying off the loan. As the AOS Board of Trustees continued to provide the support and resources required by the pandemic, the Board was also busy planning for an exciting future at AOS. With the completion of the Phase 2 master plan, the work on the schematic design phase of the project is almost finished. The completion of this phase will position us to move forward with Phase 2 as envisioned by the AOS strategic plan, when we are ready.
The schematic design helps us understand the project costs and also gets us one step closer to embarking on the full project that will create a new fine arts and enrichment center, and reimagine the athletic facilities for our school. Working closely with the AOS administration, the Board also created a successful and exciting virtual “Doors to Diversity” event and helped support a 10 year renewal of the school’s accreditation by ISAS complete with a glowing report by the ISAS committee. I want to recognize and thank three outgoing trustees: Alan Christensen, Morris Clark and Petros Papazis. Each of them has shared their abundant talent with AOS with great generosity and commitment. As the respective chairs of the Finance, Investment and Diversity committees they have been incredibly impactful throughout their tenure, and have been exemplary trustees in every way. It was a blessing to end the year with the visit of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, who delivered the commencement address at graduation. His Eminence’s inspirational remarks referenced the founding principles of AOS, which, 50 years later, continue to be the core of the AOS education. Your support makes it possible for us to dream big for AOS as we look forward to another 50 years of teaching, sharing and celebrating agape.

The AOS Annual Fund is vital to the daily operations at AOS. It provides essential, unrestricted income to support the school’s current-year operating budget for items not covered by tuition. AOS ENDOWMENT GIFTS The sustainability provided by a robust general endowment ensures that AOS will continue to embrace innovation and maintain academic excellence for our students today and for years to come. Endowment funds are similar to savings accounts which generate income through wise investments of principal. A percentage of the endowment’s income provides cash toward annual operating expenses. A common way for a school to grow an endowment is through a planned gift such as a bequest or a charitable remainder trust.

traditional events in new ways. Many other behind the scenes committees like Helping Hands, Classical Countdown, Spirit Sales, E Phili Mas, and Grade Representatives quietly kept the wheels movinggiving both children and parents a sense of normalcy. Rounding out the year, the Eikon Art show and our much beloved Olympics gave us a taste of what it might be like to be together again and reminded us, there really is No Place Like AOS!
A WORD FROM
THE PARENT TEACHER CLUB PRESIDENT Ten years ago when my family walked into the AOS gym for our very first Back to School Breakfast, we could not have envisioned the impact this institution would have on our lives. AOS is more than the place we send our children for their education. It is home. The friendships we have made here have sustained and nurtured us through the best and worst moments of the last decade. The exact equation of the magic that is AOS will always be a bit of a mystery, but I have come to believe at its core it is the ethos, “The people who love my people, become my people”. The AOS community loves fiercely and is always at its best when challenged; the PTC did not just survive but thrived during this extraordinary time. We are blessed with a fantastic community of parents that- while not as visible as years past- went about their work of serving and supporting the events which bring joy to our families. Embracing the art of what was possible, the PTC hosted a drive-thru Back to School Breakfast, Splendiferous two-part Book Fair, Curbside Spaghetti Dinner, several Sign Up Genius Used Uniform sales, and a fabulous Faculty Appreciation Week whose celebrations extended through the end of the year. Committee chairs worked hard to reimagine

A major source of fundraising for the PTC is our biennial Gala. While we were sad to postpone that event this year, I am grateful that years of disciplined financial management gave the school the flexibility to defer these gifts. We can all look forward to coming together March 5, 2022 and celebrating. I hope to see you there! The PTC would not be successful without the support of parents, faculty, and the administration. I am so proud of the events that brought our school community together in this most challenging of times. You have all risen to the occasion and I have been proud to serve as your President. Ours is a community that is vibrant, supportive, and strong. Thank you for your help, encouragement, and participation this year. At this year’s 8th Grade Commencement, AOS was honored to have His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros give the commencement address. I was especially honored to be a guest at this event. His wonderful address concluded by reminding us of the true success of a human being is in our capacity for empathy, for compassion, for seeing the other person’s perspective. The promises of Faith, Hope, and Love- and the greatest of these being Love. These words remind me so much of the spirit of AOS and why it means so much to my family.

This year the Panos Georgiou Memorial Golf Tournament was chaired again by Robert Charles, who is quickly on his way to a lifetime appointment. Thank you Robert for all of your efforts in making the tournament such a huge success, all while maintaining COVID protocols. We had 88 players this year enjoy a perfect weather day on the links. Between the teams and the sponsors, the tournament raised over $30,000 for the school.
A WORD FROM
THE DADS CLUB PRESIDENT Despite having an abridged event schedule this year, the AOS Dads Club continued to provide additional funding and support to our school’s programs. As always, we reserved any remaining funds for special requests. One such request came towards the end of the school year in the form of purchasing a Gaga Ball Pit. I confess I had to google it, but apparently all our kids already know what it is and love it. Our two boys fashioned a pit out of pillows to help explain the game to me. For those that don’t know, Gaga Ball is a fast paced, dodge-ball like game played in an octagon ‘pit’. Hours of fun.
We are already in the planning stages for next year’s schedule and anticipate being able to host most of our usual events. Please stay tuned for announcements regarding the Golf Tournament, Father-Daughter Night Out, Father-Son Night Out, Dads Club Happy Hours and other spring events. To all new AOS Dads, welcome to the Dads Club! That’s right, you’re already a member. If Charlie Chaplin once said, “I will not join any club who will take me as a member,” I would add, “unless membership is automatic, free, and it’s the AOS Dads Club!” If you are interested in getting more involved in a particular event or events, feel free to contact me or any of the board members. We look forward to meeting you. Every year, regardless of the number of events we host, the Advancement Office continues to handle many of the details behind the scenes and always does so with a smile.
