From the Editor’s Desk The Role of AO in the Healthcare Environment The delivery of care to a patient was once a simple thing. It primarily was between the patient and the doctor with little influence from others. The quality of this care was usually determined by the interaction between the patient and his/her doctor. As time progressed, this model has changed so that the delivery of care has been modified and influenced by many others besides the doctor and the patient.

The doctor-patient relationship or delivery of care is now defined by assessments of quality: patient satisfaction, value of care, outcomes, to name a few. In most instances this is beneficial, but from where does the data come to determine quality and hence determine how care maybe delivered?

At the recent AO Trustees’ meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the trustees who determine the goals and direction of the foundation were asked whether AO should play a direct role in the healthcare environment.

The answer was a unanimous and resounding yes. The trustees felt that AO needs to use its vast network of surgeons to begin generating useful patient-oriented outcome data that would be of value to guide the delivery of care. With the introduction of the AO Patient Outcome Center along with expertise from the Clinical Investigation Division, it would be possible to develop meaningful data on many aspects of musculoskeletal care. This data would be generated by surgeons in an independent, unbiased method and hence be of great value to provide physicians, administrators, politicians and funders with benchmarks to evaluate care in a meaningful way. This data could also be used as benchmarks to provide physician accreditation bodies with data to evaluate their certificants so that the process of certification and recertification would be more meaningful and related to patient care.

The change will provide AO North America with an interesting opportunity to become leaders in this mission. AONA has one of the largest memberships in AO, as well as access to large patient volumes treated by well-trained surgeons. Given the proper tools for assessment of patients’ oriented outcomes and objective measures, as well as having access to cost of care data, AONA could be recognized as an important resource to assure that the assessment of care by the musculoskeletal practitioner is top quality. In other words, we, the doctors, will now determine with our patients what quality of care is.

The Beginning Work on an AONA Strategy Steve Schwartz Executive Director, AO North America

There are many exciting and interesting activities going on “behind the scenes” at AO North America. One of the most important is the development of a Strategic Plan. AONA administrative staff are working with AONA surgeon leadership to create a meaningful strategic plan that will define our vision for the future, respect and enhance our culture, identify our priorities, and establish deliverables and accountability. Feedback and input from our surgeon faculty is critical, as is alignment with existing strategic plans from the Clinical Divisions. We are making good progress, and we expect that the project will be completed by the Spring,

2016. Stay tuned for further developments and please do not hesitate to contact me directly at stratplan@aona.org if you have any questions or comments.

We are delighted by the signing of the new Agreement between the AO Foundation and DePuy Synthes that occurred at the Trustees Meeting in Thailand. We are grateful to the leadership of both parties for their hard work in creating a framework for a positive collaboration that will benefit everyone, especially the patients.

The newly re-named and repurposed AONA Education Advisory Board (EAB)

has been making good progress under the leadership of David Hak. In addition, we just submitted our “Self Study” documents to the ACCME as a part of the reaccreditation process in which we are currently participating. We expect to hear the final ACCME decision about our reaccreditation in March 2016. Many thanks to Jane Mihelic and her staff for the incredibly hard work they have put into this submission.

You may have heard about our search for a Chief Learning Officer to lead our education enterprise as a part of our AONA 20/20 Initiative. We continue to actively recruit for this position, as it is a critical component of our plans to advance our education to the next level. We welcome your referrals of anyone who you think would be a candidate for this important position.

Lastly, a special thanks to Jack Wilber for his remarkable leadership as Chairman of the AONA Board, and to Mike Baumgaertner for his hard work as President of AONA. Dr. Baumgaertner will assume Dr. Wilber’s role as Board Chairman, and Bob McGuire will assume Dr. Baumgaertner’s role as AONA President. Congratulations and best wishes to Drs. AONA Board Shows Appreciation for Dr. Jack Wilber On His 4-Year Term As Chairman

At the recent AONA Board of Directors meeting, the AONA Board recognized and saluted Dr. Jack Wilber for his service as Chairman of the Board for the past four years (2011-2015). At a luncheon held on May 11, the AONA Board and staff presented a chair to Dr. Wilber to acknowledge his leadership and dedication.

His experience as a surgeon and teacher has made him an outstanding leader.

Dr. Wilber has been actively involved with the AO since completing his Trauma Fellowship at Harborview Medical Center and AO Fellowship in 1985. From 2004 until 2011, Dr. Wilber served as President of AO North America. He has also been an active Trustee of the AO Foundation from 2000 to present and served on its Board of Directors in 2013. His accomplishments do not stop there, as he is currently the Chairman of the AOTrauma International Board.

A Giant Among Surgeons On Saturday, April 18th, 2015, AOTrauma North America paid tribute to one of its “Surgeon Giants,” Dr. Jeffrey Mast.

Surrounded by over one hundred of his friends and family, Dr. Mast heard his disciples recalling stories, cases and surgical plans inspired by him and his teachings. He was thanked for “our hands, our minds, our tools, and abilities.

For our determination and our courage.

But mostly, for teaching us the value of friendship.” Matt Graves thanked Dr. Mast saying, “You’ve shaped my perspective and helped me clarify my thoughts. You’ve encouraged me to always strive for more, knowingly or not, in hopes of somehow reaching your level of excellence.” The terms “Master”, “Artist”, “Innovator”, “Integrity”, “Courage”, and “Mentor” were echoed throughout the day.

Dr. Mast began his AO career under Maurice Müller at the Spital Tiefenau in Bern, Switzerland. Their vision and work forever changed the way fractures would be fixed, the way AO would teach, and how surgeons would think. Dr. Mast’s contribution to the field of orthopedic trauma surgery was touted as “unparalleled.”

His textbook, “Planning and Reduction Techniques in Fracture Surgery” remains the “go to” book for orthopedic trauma surgeons.

His innovative approach to modulating construct stability, alignment restoration, and implant design are praised by all.

In a video recorded more than 10 years ago, he is quoted as saying, “The big cases are out there, and they need to be done.”

His attitude that we should never give up on patients because they have difficult or unsolved problems permeated his fellows’ stories and cases. “If you have the abilities that may help these patients, it is your duty to try.”

Dr. Mast stated that through his career he got up for cases just as any professional would, and he couldn’t have picked a better career. His legacy lives on in the many students, fellows, and surgeons he has influenced, as they continue to teach his philosophies and techniques.

Also in attendance during the weekend were Dr. Mast’s sons, Nicholas and Alexander Mast, and their families.

During the weekend, some moving words were spoken regarding the family life of a Trauma surgeon. “They are wonderful boys, and I love them very much, but they are the ones who paid for my education,” Dr. Mast said, sounding very paternal, as he looked back on his career. While Dr. Jeffrey Mast may have dedicated himself to excellence in trauma care and education, he wanted to expand his family and create a much larger family which included the AO: a family which continues to support young Dr. Nicholas Mast as he develops in his career.

Dr. Mast is a true master of surgery, and his contributions and innovations were recognized with a tribute fitting for a giant amongst men.

News from the Education Advisory Board In February 2014, AO North America established a vision for what AONA education will look like in the year 2020 and we are making excellent progress. In January of this year the AO North America Board of Directors agreed to the name change of the CME Advisory Board (CMEAB) to the Education Advisory Board (EAB) which is comprised of the Chairs of the Education Committees of each clinical division. The name change is reflective of the increasing responsibility and involvement of the EAB as an important strategic leader of AONA education across all North American clinical divisions as well as maintaining accreditation standards.

The AO North America Education Advisory Board (EAB) held its inaugural meeting in Chicago on May 9, 2015, to further chart and plan the future strategies for education in North America.

Urs Rüetschi, Director of the AO Education Institute in Switzerland, presented an update on international education initiatives and discussed opportunities for collaboration. The EAB discussed aspects of AONA’s evaluation and assessment processes, online learning, and sections of the self-study report which will be submitted to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) later this summer for reaccreditation as an ACCME accredited provider of CME.

In addition, as part of its strategic thinking, the EAB established the following vision and mission statements:

VISION STATEMENT The AO North America (AONA®) Education Advisory Board’s vision is to be the premier provider of surgical education for surgeons, fellows, and residents in orthopedic, hand, craniomaxillofacial, spine, neurosurgery, and veterinary surgery.

AONA will set the standard for assessment and measuring outcomes to improve the care of the patients we serve.

MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the AO North America Education Advisory Board is to provide comprehensive multidisciplinary needs based surgical education through strategic educational planning and initiatives. Through a variety of teaching methods and delivery modalities, AONA will offer educational opportunities (both CME certified and non-certified) that will: – increase the knowledge base and surgical skill level of our learners – demonstrate that advances in knowledge and surgical skill level are being applied into practice resulting in improved patient outcomes The future evolution of AONA’s educational offerings is very bright and exciting. As we begin to better understand how our learners learn, assessment and measuring outcomes will enable us to demonstrate the impact and effectiveness of our education.

This is becoming a key criteria for residency and fellowship programs, accrediting organizations, and evolving requirements of board certification and licensure. AONA is well positioned to set the standard not only for assessment of participant’s skills and knowledge, but for surgical education of the future through the strength and dedication of our committed faculty.

Successful State of the Art: Facial Reconstruction and Transplantation Course AOCMF North America held the 2015 State of the Art: Facial Reconstruction and Transplantation Course on Friday, May 15, to Sunday, May 17, 2015, in New York City, New York.

Eduardo D. Rodriguez, MD, DDS (Chairman); Michael P. Grant, MD, FACS, PhD; Paul N. Manson, MD; and Frederick J. Menick, MD, Co-Chairmen for the course, offered a dynamic program of lectures, case discussions and panel discussions with distinguished faculty. Participants heard the latest developments in aesthetic and functional reconstruction of the craniofacial hard and soft tissue.

In addition, 19 exhibiting companies and attended this event.

Participants enjoyed circulating the exhibits while collecting stamps for the giveaway and grand prize drawing for an iPad. Numerous exhibitors commented on the quality of the connections they made with attendees. Two successful industry lunch workshops were also held during the course. Stryker sponsored a workshop on Novel Applications for Stryker Customized Mandible Reconstruction Plates, presented by David Hirsch, DDS, MD and Jarrod A. Little, MD. DePuy Synthes sponsored a workshop on Complex CMF Reconstruction using Virtual Planning and Patient-Specific Implants, presented by Daniel Buchbinder, DMD, MD. Sirius XM Radio conducted a live broadcast from the course on Friday for Doctor Radio (Channel 81). The special broadcast titled Doctor Radio Plastic Surgery Show, discussed various topics including: The Past and Future of Facial Transplants, is Face Transplant a Reality, and Pediatric Facial Surgery.

There were over 200 participants at the course, including attending surgeons, residents in Oral and Maxillofacial, Otolaryngology— Head and Neck, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Oculoplastic Surgery, and allied health professionals involved in the care of patients with craniomaxillofacial traumatic or oncologic defects.

Many international participants attended the course including participants from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, The People’s Republic of China, Finland, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and Russia.

AONeuro Attended FaceRecon in New York City!

AONeuro had a booth at the FaceRecon Course to share information about their upcoming courses – Controversies in Neurotrauma: Brain and Spinal Cord. The courses are to be held in Bellevue, Washington, September 3 - 5, 2015; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, November 5 - 7, 2015. These AONA Courses are part of a cranial and brain initiative of the AO Foundation designed to provide participants with a unique opportunity to advance their evidence-based knowledge and surgical skills in brain and spinal cord trauma through didactic lectures and case-based discussions with renowned neurotrauma thought leaders.

These courses meet the CME external trauma-related requirements of the American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma (ACS COT) and the requirements of the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS) for Part II of Maintenance of Certification: Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment.

13th Annual Fellows Forum a Huge Success In keeping with the decade long tradition, the 13th Annual AOSNA Fellows Forum took place on April 23-25, 2015 in the beautiful Banff Springs Hotel in Alberta, Canada. The AOSNA Board welcomed Distinguished Keynote Speakers: Mr. Rick Hansen from the Rick Hansen Foundation in Canada and Dr. Nikolaus Renner from Cantonal Hospital in Switzerland as well as the over 40 AOSNA Fellows, Fellowship Directors, and Faculty from the US and Canada.

The Forum provided the Fellows an opportunity to interact with other fellows and Fellowship Directors to exchange ideas and knowledge that centered on the advancement of disciplinary spine care. The scientific program consisted of lectures, fireside case conferences, and a new optional afternoon lecture series offered this year. The highlights of the program were the presentations given by each Fellow focusing on his / her research at their institution.

Each Fellow’s presentation was evaluated in a peer-reviewed process by the Faculty and Fellowship Directors. The scores were tallied, and awards were given for the best clinical and basic science abstract as well as best poster presentation. The winners of this year’s Fellows Forum Awards were presented to Lionel Metz, MD (Washington University) for the best clinical abstract, Leonardo Simoes, MD (McGill University) for the best basic science abstract, and Nicholas Spina, MD (University of Utah) for the best poster presentation. These three winners will be invited to participate as faculty in the 2016 Fellows Forum.

Congratulations to our Award Winners as well as the rest of the Fellows for their hard work and outstanding research presentations.

After Three Years, Dr. Stephen Sims Rotates Off AOTNA Board Stephen Sims, MD has served as the AOTNA Chair for the past three years (2012-2015). Under his tenure, great strides were made to expand and promote AOTrauma in North America.

Dr. Sims has had many accomplishments, including an improved faculty mentoring program, new course offerings annually,

a new curriculum for Fellows webinars, successfully obtaining a $15,000 USD research grant for each of the 27 AOT-funded fellows in North America and successfully negotiating a contract with Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research making CORR the official, affiliated journal of AOTNA. In addition, during his time as chair, membership has

remained strong and relationships with OTA, AOTrauma International and AO Foundation have grown. We congratulate Dr. Sims for his outstanding effort as AOTNA Chair, and we look forward to seeing him as faculty for upcoming AOTNA courses.

AOSNA is Pleased to Announce the Results of the 2015 Young Investigator Research Grant Awards For the 8th year, the AOSpine North America Research Committee has established the Young Investigator Research Grant Award (YIRGA,) funding new investigators who have a desire to perform high-quality, clinically relevant spinal or spinal cord research in basic or clinical science.

The applicants, all AOSNA subscribed members, sent in a significant number of applications to be evaluated in a blinded, peer-reviewed process by Research Committee members.

The final decision was made during the Research Committee meeting in Banff last month. The following investigators will each be awarded a one-year grant of $30,000 to help with their research.

Congratulations to the winners – they certainly represent a significant contribution to the quality of research being performed in North America.

For AOSNA, it is a pleasure to be able to invest in promising projects like these and to incentivize the members to actively take part in the scientific development of the region.

CAMLS – Center For Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation in Tampa, FL was the venue for the Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery and Complication Management course.

This comprehensive 2-day course provided participants with an opportunity to increase their knowledge and expand their skills through bioskills training, lectures and case discussions with leading spinal deformity surgeons from throughout North America. The course focused on current practice in the management of adult spinal deformities, degenerative scoliosis and sagittal spinal imbalance.

Through intensive, hands-on sessions utilizing human anatomic specimens, participants engaged in surgical techniques and strategies for a range of deformity procedures including; Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion, Vertebral Column Resection, Osteotomies, Pelvic Fixation and Upper Cervical Instrumentation.

Led by experienced faculty, the course provided a forum for exposure to the latest cutting edge techniques used for spinal deformity surgery. Significant time was dedicated to operative indication discussions and the problem-based decision-making process.

Congratulations to course Chairs Dean Chou, MD and John France, MD as well as the rest of the course faculty for making the course such a success!

AOVET North America Holds Successful Annual Triple Veterinary Courses in Columbus, Ohio

AOVET North America held their annual Triple Veterinary Conference at the Hilton Columbus at Easton Hotel, in Columbus, Ohio, on April 16-19, 2015.

Courses offered this year included Principles in Small Animal Fracture Management, Advanced Techniques in Small Animal Fracture Management and Equine Advanced Techniques in Fracture Management. The Columbus Veterinary courses represent the longest standing AO courses on fracture repair in both human and veterinary fields in the United States. They have been given annually in Columbus, Ohio since Drs. Hohn and Jenny first organized them in March of 1970. Despite over 40 years of history, the Columbus Veterinary Courses are continuously evolving and striving to teach the most current trends in fracture care in both large and small animals. The three different courses are each four days in length and focus on different topics. We were happy to have as our invited Guest Lecturer this year, Dr. David F. Hubbard, an AOTrauma North American faculty member, from West Virginia, who lectured at all three courses on the topic, Orthopedic Challenges in the Human Animal.

Always a well-received part of the Vet courses each year is the traditional opening night reception which is held at the end of the lecture day on Thursday for all participants as well as faculty.

Within close proximity to The Ohio State University, the veterinary specialty is privileged to have many local vet faculty that participate each year.

AOVET faculty practice in North America as well as internationally in countries such as Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany and

Dr. Jonathan Dyce (Ohio State) teaching in the Small Animal Principles Lab Australia and are recognized leaders in both small animal and equine orthopedics. Over 200 participants traveled to Ohio this year to attend these three amazing courses. Participants traveled from as far away as Japan, Korea, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, Egypt, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Costa Rica. Our faculty dinner was held on Friday evening, at which time we toasted Professor Emeritus JÜrg Auer, as his term of office as the AOVET International Chair comes to an end on June 30, 2015. AOVET North America looks forward to begin planning next year’s courses which are scheduled for April 7-10, 2016. We hope to see you there!

Resident Research Grant Opportunity Attention: Orthopedic Surgery Residents Who Are Interested in Trauma Research Eligibility: The principal investigator (PI) must be an orthopedic surgery resident training in an ACGME-accredited orthopedic program in the United States, at a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada accredited program, or an osteopathic resident at an AOA-approved program. The resident may develop his/her own project or work on a discrete component of an established investigator’s larger research endeavor. Applicants are limited to one submission per individual each academic year.

Amount: Maximum of $10,000 for a one-year period.

Deadlines for Application: July 30, 2015 and September 15, 2015

Period of Grant: From date of grant approval through June 30 of the following academic year.
