From the Editor’s Desk Welcome to another quarterly edition of AONA News. This issue includes a number of articles that highlight the rich educational and research activities of our subspecialty groups.

Next year’s multispecialty meeting, One AO, is sure to be an interesting and valuable meeting. Mark your calendars now and “Save the Date” for this unique educational event which brings together of surgeons in orthopedic trauma, craniomaxillofacial, spine, and veterinary medicine to discuss challenges, differences, and commonalities in musculoskeletal disorders and fracture care.

Details regarding abstract submission are provided in this edition.

I am pleased to introduce the selection of a new Editor-in-Chief for AONA News, Dr. James F. Kellam, who will take of the editorial reins as of this issue. Many of you likely know Jim who is a past president of the AO Foundation, and also serves as editor of AO Dialogue, the international version of the AO Newsletter.

As I pass the baton to Jim, I want to offer my thanks to the outstanding AONA staff, especially Melissa D’Archangelo, who has worked so diligently these past two and one half years to make AONA News successful.

As chair of the AONA Continuing Medical Educational Advisory Board, I plan to continue to contribute to AONA News, and I encourage you to consider doing the same. We invite all members to submit interesting clinical cases. Case topics can range from innovative techniques to simple cases demonstrating standard AO principles.

David Hak is leaving his post as Editor of the AONA Newsletter to take on the role of Chair of the Continuing Medical Education Advisory Board (CMEAB). This board is responsible for ensuring that AONA abides by the CME regulations and ensures that AONA is compliant and transparent in its activities. However we must first thank David for his time as editor of the newsletter. He increased clinical content by requesting and following up on cases submitted by members across all clinical divisions. He encouraged the surgeon members of AONA to be actively involved as main contributors in their newsletter by providing non-clinical content.

In order to maintain our faculty goals, David added educational content to improve our skills as faculty, lab instructors, discussion

leaders and session moderators. From an organization viewpoint, he standardized the editorial schedule and format to allow the publication of quarterly editions. Most importantly David was always diligent, reliable, and punctual in providing stories, editing, and providing topics of interest to AONA faculty/members. As a result of his dedication to the newsletter, he has made it a worthwhile and important part of the AONA in particular assuring that we all remain “ONE”.

On behalf of all of the members of AONA and all the people who have been involved in publishing the newsletter, I would like to thank David and wish him all the success in his new role.

Save the Date February 5–7, 2015 and Mark your calendar for the 2015 AO North America Multispecialty Meeting. Planning has already begun for One AO. This meeting is uniquely designed to bring together the AONA clinical divisions— AOCMF, AOSpine, AOTrauma and AOVET to understand the commonalities and solutions to musculoskeletal disorders and fracture management.

The meeting will include a program of guest speakers and scientific papers, along with networking opportunities across specialties. AONA will seek exhibitors and sponsors to support the meeting.

AOSpine North America Awarded Research Grant

AOSpine North America is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a research grant by The Rick Hansen Institute to develop a set of MRI-based Biomarkers in Patients with Acute Spinal Cord Injury. The study will be led by Dr. Michael Fehlings, Chairman of AOSpine North America, Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto and Halbert Chair in Neural Repair and Regeneration at the Krembil Neuroscience Centre, Toronto Western Hospital. The Co-Principal Investigators include Drs. Bizhan Aarabi (University of Maryland), Shekar Kurpad (Medical College of Wisconsin) and Brian Kwon (University of British Columbia).

Krembil Neuroscience Centre is Canada’s largest combined clinical, educational and research neuroscience unit. AOSpine North America, an academic organization devoted to excellence in research, education, innovation and community outreach will be conducting this study over the course of the next two years.

The Rick Hansen Institute is a Canadian not-for-profit organization whose mission is to foster greater collaboration across the spinal cord injury (SCI) community and to accelerate progress towards a cure for paralysis after SCI. It is based at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre in Vancouver, B.C. — an 11,000 square metre worldclass facility that brings together 300-plus spine clinicians, researchers and other specialists under one roof, where they can collaborate to discover and implement novel treatments and approaches into improved outcomes, independence and quality of life for people living with SCI. Funding for this research grant was made possible by contributions from Western Economic Diversification Canada.

This research effort will run as an addendum to the existing, currently enrolling phase II/III clinical trial titled “A Multi-Center, Randomized, Placebo Controlled, DoubleBlinded, Trial of Efficacy and Safety of Riluzole in Acute Spinal Cord Injury”, also known as the RISCIS trial.

The study will use advanced MRI technology in the RISCIS trial to assess whether Riluzole will positively affect length of lesion (LOL), and if LOL can be used as a surrogate outcome measure to predict function outcome at six months post injury. Further, the study aims to investigate the clinical value of high

cervical DTI, rostral to the injury site, as a noninvasive imaging biomarker for spinal cord injury.

AOCMF North America Held Craniomaxillofacial Surgery: Ballistic Injury Management Course (with Human Anatomic Specimens), in New Orleans, LA

The Hilton Riverside Hotel and Louisiana State University Health Science Center (Cadaver Lab) in New Orleans, Louisiana was the venue for the AOCMF North America Craniomaxillofacial Surgery: Ballistic Injury Management course (with Human Anatomic Specimens), March 21 – 23, 2014. This intensive two-and-a-half-day course discussed surgical planning, management of hard-tissue reconstruction and soft-tissue flap reconstructive techniques and ended with the discussion of cutting-edge reconstructive plating techniques for the patient with Craniofacial wounds. The course participants were also given a time that they could choose one of the techniques discussed in the course and with the assistance of a faculty member practice that technique on their human anatomic specimen.

The course format included didactic sessions, panel discussions, small group discussions and practical exercises utilizing human anatomic specimens.

The course emphasized preoperative consideration, treatment planning, surgical techniques and postoperative therapy. A large portion of the course was spent in the hands-on laboratory where the participants engaged in practicing cranial vault repairs, bone harvests, maxilla and mandible reconstructions, skin flaps, and nerve and cartilage harvests.

The course chairmen: Dr. David Powers, Dr. Richard Ha, and Dr. Eric Helling delivered an outstanding course.

AOPOC: Revolutionizing the Collection of Patient Outcome Measures First patients recruited in Boston for this AOCID initiative.

Dr. Vrahas, what is the AOPOC project all about?

Dr. Mark Vrahas

The AO Patient Outcomes Center is a scientific tool to simplify collection of patient outcome measures for surgeons and patients. The tool uses Computer Adaptive Testing technology to tailor the most appropriate series of questions for each patient based on their individual responses. Compared to the traditional paper collection of patient reported outcome data, this tool reduces the burden on patients because they have to answer fewer questions. This allows patient-reported outcome assessments to be performed quickly and efficiently in a busy routine clinical setting.

Can it be used by any doctor?

Right now we are testing the system at four hospital systems: Mass General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Maine Medical Center, and Northwestern University. After these alpha tests, we will open the tool to 20 more sites for beta testing. Once all the testing is complete, the plan is to have the tool available for general release by early 2015.

Can it be used in any population?

The AOPOC tool is optimized for orthopaedic patients, but there is no reason that it cannot be used for all medical conditions. It uses outcome measures created by the NIH to assess all domains of health. The default measures are for physical function and pain which are obviously very important in orthopedics, but with the simple click of a tab, measures addressing all areas of health can be added.

AOSNA is Pleased to Announce the Results of the 2014 Young Investigator Research Grant Awards For the 7th year, the AOSpine North America Research Committee has established the Young Investigator Research Grant Award (YIRGA) funding new investigators who have a desire to perform high-quality, clinically relevant spinal or spinal cord research in basic or clinical science. The applicants, all AOSNA subscribed members, sent in a significant number of applications to be evaluated in a blinded peer review process by the Research Committee members.

Who else was behind the development of the AOPOC? As you can imagine for such a complex project, a large team was involved. We are particularly indebted to Drs. Mike Stover, Mike Weaver, Ray White, Bruce Sangeorzan and Bob O’Toole who volunteered a great deal of time and early morning conference calls to develop this tool. We had wonderful collaborators from Northwestern University led by Nan Rothrock; Nancy Holmes, the Executive Director of AO North America (AONA); and Beate Hanson, the Director of AO Clinical Investigation and Documentation (AOCID) who have worked tirelessly to keep this project on track. Finally, we are indebted to AONA and AOTrauma International for their support, encouragement and funding for this project.

Thank you very much Dr. Vrahas for this interview and best of luck to you and the rest of the AOPOC team as you continue to develop and hone this exciting tool.

The final decision was made during the Research Committee meeting in Banff last month. The following investigators will each be awarded a one-year grant of $30,000 to help with their research.

Suzanne Tharin, MD, PhD Stanford University “microRNA Controls Over Corticospinal Differentiation of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, Toward Spinal Cord Injury Repair” The projects will be carried out during 2014 and 2015 and the investigators will be invited to present their results at the 2015 Fellows Forum in Banff.

Congratulations to the winners — they certainly represent a significant contribution to the quality of research being performed in North America. For AOSNA, it is a pleasure to be able to invest in promising projects like these and to incentivize the members to actively take part in the scientific development of the region.

AOVET North America Holds Successful Annual Triple Veterinary Courses in Columbus, Ohio

AOVET North America held the annual Triple Veterinary Conference at the Hilton Columbus at Easton Hotel on April 10 – 13, 2014. Courses offered this year included: Principles in Small Animal Fracture Management, Masters Course on Advanced Osteotomy and Small Animal and Equine Principles of Fracture Management. The Columbus Veterinary courses represent the longest standing AO courses on fracture repair in both human and veterinary fields in the United States.

They have been given annually in Columbus, Ohio since Drs. Hohn and Jenny first organized them in March 1970.

Despite over 40 years of history, the Columbus Veterinary Courses are continuously evolving and striving to teach the most current trends in fracture care in both small animals and equine.

The three different courses are each four days in length and focus on different subjects. The faculty for these courses practice in both North America as well as internationally in countries such as Italy, Switzerland and Australia and are recognized leaders in small animal and equine orthopedics. Over 220 participants traveled to Ohio to attend these three fantastic courses in Columbus.

We were also happy to have many great exhibitors join us this year, including Elsevier Medical Books, Sawbones, IMEX, Ethicon, and DePuy Synthes Vet. AOVET North America looks forward to planning next year’s courses which are scheduled to be given April 16 – 19, 2015. We hope to see you there!

There were scientific sessions during the day and into the evening each day.
