Entender el colegio Alianza Francesa como una extensión de la educación de este país y divulgador de su espíritu a lo largo del mundo, definió una forma de abordar el proyecto condicionada por la racionalidad propia de lo francés. Esta lógica se refleja en la manera de vivir los espacios, donde priman el purismo, la simpleza y la coherencia. Una primera aproximación al partido general del colegio existente, en Vitacura, evidenció la importancia de los lugares de encuentro, sus diferentes escalas y aproximaciones a las salas de clases. En base a estas características y a las condiciones del terreno se generó la idea fuerza para determinar el partido general. Las vistas encajonadas, contenidas entre los planos que conforman el cordón de cerros del valle de Chamisero –asociado a un paisaje árido y estéril–, llevan a reconocer dos tipos de vistas: la lejana –desde la autopista, en que la presencia del predio y el proyecto se da en su plenitud– y la cercana, la peatonal, que será la vista directa del edificio y su impronta en el entorno.

Según las bases de la convocatoria, el proyecto para la segunda sede del Colegio Alianza Francesa en Santiago –perteneciente a una red pedagógica con presencia mundial– debía acoger los fundamentos humanistas que sustentan su sistema educativo, tales como la libertad de pensamiento, la tolerancia, la diversidad y la cultura. Por ello, los arquitectos participantes fueron invitados a recorrer la emblemática sede de Av. Luis Pasteur en Vitacura –diseñada por el Premio Nacional de Arquitectura Emilio Duhart en 1959– y luego visitar el nuevo emplazamiento en el sector de Chamisero. Organizado por la AOA, el concurso fue dirigido por el arquitecto Sergio San Martín, mientras que el jurado estuvo constituido por los Premios Nacionales de Arquitectura Enrique Browne y Luis Izquierdo; el decano de la Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanismo Universidad de Chile, Leopoldo Prat; el presidente de la AOA, Patrick Turner; el arquitecto francés Pierre Favret; el decano de la Facultad de Arquitectura Universidad Mayor, Fernando Marín; los directores de la Corporación Educacional Alianza Francesa de Santiago José Moya y Javier Carvallo (presidente del jurado); los representantes del colegio Olivier Bastet, Carolina Ramis, Michele Privis y el rector Serge Buenaventes, y la Embajadora de Francia, Maryse Bossieres. En total participaron 41 proyectos, todos de gran nivel, para el diseño de un edificio de 4.000 m² aprox. para enseñanza preescolar, primaria y secundaria, enmarcado en un gran terreno de forma triangular. De manera especial se destacó el nivel del jurado y el rol de la AOA en los aspectos organizacionales. According to the tender rules, the project for the second venue of the Alliance Française School of Santiago –belonging to an educational network with world presence– should embrace the humanistic founding concepts of their educational system, such as freedom of thought, tolerance, diversity and culture. Therefore the participating architects were invited to visit the symbolic first venue of the school on Luis Pasteur Avenue in Vitacura district –designed by Emilio Duhart, National Architecture Prize Winner of 1959– and later the new site on the Chamisero sector. The competition organized by the AOA was directed by architect Sergio San Martín, whereas the jury was composed by the National Architecture Award winners Enrique Browne and Luis Izquierdo; Leopoldo Prat, dean of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Universidad de Chile; Patrick Turner, AOA president; the French architect Pierre Favret; Fernando Marín, dean of the School of Architecture, Universidad Mayor; José Moya and Javier Carvallo (president of the jury), directors of the Alliance Française of Santiago Educational Corporation; school representatives Olivier Bastet, Carolina Ramis, Michele Privis and Serge Buenaventes, school principal; and Maryse Bossieres, Ambassador of France. A total of 41 projects participated –all of them of very high standard– for the design of a 4,000 m² building for pre-school, primary and secondary instruction on a large triangular site. The organizational role of the AOA and the level of the jury were highlighted by the participating offices.

Understanding the Alliance Française School as an extension of that country’s education and as a worldwide disseminator of their spirit defined the way to address the project, conditioned by the rationality of the French. This logic is reflected in the way of living each space, where purism, simplicity and coherence prevail. A first approach to the conceptual organization of the existing school in Vitacura evidenced the significance of meeting places, their different scales and relation to the classrooms. Based on these attributes and the site conditions the main idea to inspire the conceptual organization was produced. The encased views, framed between the planes forming the string of hills of the Chamisero valley –associated with an arid and barren landscape– lead to acknowledge two types of vistas: the long distance view from the highway in which the presence of the site and the project is complete – and the close view of the pedestrian, which will be the direct view of the building and its influence on its surroundings.
