The apartment building commissioned by Banco de Chile in 1962 is composed of two volumes of six floors each. The first is placed maintaining the continuous facade and height of the surrounding buildings. The second block, located perpendicular (setting up a plan in the form of T) and into the property, is connected to the main one by bridges. Both blocks contain duplex apartments (except the one located over the vehicular access). The first level contains the public program and service area, while the second lodges the bedrooms. The apartments are developed using the full width of the structural bay of the building, allowing sunlight and cross ventilation. The vertical circulation elements are structurally independent. A single elevator and two external stairs are connected by bridges with the two volumes in order to optimize the space for the apartments while allowing accessibility to the entire assembly.
The structural concept of the building is based on reinforced concrete walls. These recognize the central longitudinal axis of the two blocks by means of a wall covering the total length, accompanied by transverse walls defining the bays that accommodate each apartment. The finishes of the building include white colored “muriglass” type stoneware ceramic from the Irmir factory in interior hallways, marble floors, parquet floors and red and white colored opaque acrylic for the facades from the Shyf factory. The main facade of the building evolves in the use of curtain wall design technique incorporating open I-beam type profiles that do not touch the natural ground, attached to the main structure of the curtain wall and clearly showing their structural separation.
