I’m an undergraduate student pursuing Bachelors of Design from Faculty of Design, CEPT Univeristy ( 8th Semester) I have a strong understanding of the design thinking process and the importance of using design as a tool to impact the human lives. I have consistently been drawn towards the intersection of form, function, and aesthetics and how design can be used not only to solve problems but also to convey a story.

FIKA : Take a moment to slow down

Studio: Traveller’s Home

Guided by: Shikha Parmar, Shweta jain

Softwares used: Autocad, Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketchup, Vray Skills learnt: Model making, Spatial designing

The focus of this studio is to design a traveller’s home for a group of travel enthusiasts visiting Goa. The design must provide both pragmatic shelter and more importantly an emotional experience as memorable as the city of which it is a part.

The key element of the design should be the Spatial element given to you which in my case was the Plinth. The design should hero the spatial element, while taking care of the needs of the travellers and the surroundings

ILLUMINARE : An Art Gallery

Studio: The Art of Detailing

Guided by: Vasav Bhatt, Ajay Patel

Softwares used: Autocad, Photoshop, Sketchup, Twinmotion Skills learnt: Working drawings, working in metal and wood workshop

Having CEPT as the site, the students had to design an Art gallery with the key material which was given to them which in my case was Wood. Once the overall structure was developed, Doors, Windows and a Staircase also had to be studied and designed in detail.

Through this studio, students will develop a critical understanding about material properties, structural elements and systems. As detailing is the articulation of the structure and construction, it becomes the core of the studio.

Design development

The building has been designed by breaking the planes and creating niches to allow light to enter. This principle is being followed not only while designing the plan but also while designing the roof and walls.

IN THE LAP OF NATURE

Studio: Elements of Form and Space

Guided by: Gaurang Shah

Softwares used: Autocad, Photoshop, Rhinoceros, Keyshot Skills learnt: Product drawings, Product model making (process and prototype)

This Studio refined and sharpened the students’ perceptual and aesthetical sensibility to all aspects of form making including: geometric relationships; form integration; form manipulation and form transitions explored through sketching, drawing and physical and virtual modelling.

Students gained the skills to understand and apply basic principles of form generation and to articulate their form ideas to design a seating element for their site, Kankaria Zoo.

Concept Inspiration

The idea is to design a seating element for 3-4 people where they can sit, rest, eat food and interact with each other. Catering to families (adults and their kids), it should stand out and attract more people towards the food stall. Since it is placed at the entry of the zoo, it should also be welcoming and inviting.

1. GFRC or Glass Fiber reinforced concrete is used for the body of the seating element. Apart from being structurally stable, it is a material that can be easily casted into different shapes and forms of choice.

2. For the backrest, Metal pipe has been used which makes the element look lightweight. It has been powder coated with different colors to make the element stand out in the surrounding green environment.

SUMMER SCHOOL COURSE

Softwares used: Autocad, Adobe Suite

Skills learnt: Furniture analysis, Furniture drawings

Choosing a furniture piece from the collection at Shanti Sadan, Ahmedabad, we had to analyse it from all aspects and then redesign it according to our understanding of the furniture from its flaws to its good qualities.

VISUAL COMPOSITION USES

The layout of the bed is symmetrical and consists of rectangles. A clean and gemotrical language is seen with a horizontal striped pattern.

ACCESS AND COMFORTABILITY

The uses of the bed are to sleep and relax, to sit, to be used as a table and finally, when not in use it can be folded and stacked against a wall.

When placed against a wall, the bed offers a more comfortable posture to sit in with a backrest but the access is then limited to only three sides.

The bed offers an access on all four sides which also gives a freedom of movement when lying on it. When sitting, the height of the bed is perfect so that your feet can rest on the ground. Even while climbing the bed, the height is low enough for people to be easily able to get on it.

GIVEN FURNITURE PIECE

The plan is perfectly symetrical across the horizontal as well as vertical axis. The ratio of the length to the width is approx. 1:2. The diagram below shows the mass distributions and how the mass is equally distributed on both sides leaving a void in between.

JOINERIES

In plan, the forces is equally felt by the whole surface. In elevation the load transfers from the upper surface to legs and finally goes to the ground.

Usage of tenon and mortise for joining wood picces along with the use of metal hardware in certain places

GRID AND STRUCTURE

INSPIRATION

The history of this bed can be traced back to the charpai bed that was used in old times. With silimar proportions, it was also lightweight and could be easily moved from one place to another, be it indoor or outdoor.

CONTEXT AND ORIENTATION

SYSTEM AND FOLDING TECH-
This bed is multipurpose and due to its verstaile design, it can be used in various contexts.

THE PITCHER CHAIR

The pitcher chair is a chair inspired from the form of the pitcher plant. This plant is famous for its pitcher like form i.E. Bulky at the bottom and narrow as it goes up. It has an opening at the top which it uses to trap insects. This chair has been designed after studying the form and proportion of the pitcher plant.

IGNITING THE INNOCENT

Representing the lives of inncocent civilians, this sculpture represents two such humans hugging each other. The color white symbolises their unity and innocence.

In today’s time, war occurs due to political or economic issues, but the ones who suffer are civilians. When lighting an immortal flame inside, it will leave black soot marks which will darken over time. This represents how the life of a civilian is destroyed in a war leaving a permanent mark on not only their own lives but also their coming generations

Location: Ancient city of Palmyra, Syria

Why?

During the Syrian civil war in 2015, the Islamic State (IS) destroyed large parts of the ancient city. The history of this place makes it the perfect location for the sculpture as the sculpture represents how innocent civilisations ultimately become the victim of war.

STORY TELLING

BRAND DEVELOPMENT

Aim: By giving ameaning to a random word that was given to us, we had to create our own brand from scratch from designing its logo, identity, advertisements, products, services etc

pHot ( pronounced as ‘pot’) is a paint your own pottery studio and brand where people can come with their family and friends and enjoy a fun atmosphere of painting ceramics/pottery. Once painted, you can either take that piece home or leave it there for sale!

Giving physical form to the brand

It can also be reused for other purposes. The body of the tumbler can be used as a vase, or a holder of any sort. It also serves as a blank canvas for anyone who wants to customise it. The lids can be used as decor pieces. It will also motivate people to buy more such tumblers to increase their collection of art.

Designing a kiosk

Along with providing an experience, pHot wants to revive the handicraft industry of India and support the artisans hidden in several parts of India. Hence it sells other handicraft items which were made by those artisans.

Not only that, it also conducts workshops where people are given the opportunity to meet those artisans and learn from them firsthand.
