In the last few years Reiki has been practiced in many Hospitals and Hospices throughout the western world. There are innumerable researches that demonstrate how Reiki can be used to reduce pain in cancer patients, before and after surgery and in general to improve the quality of their life. I worked for many years as a consultant at a Cancer Institute in a major city in Italy introducing Reiki in their Hospice and there I witnessed the impact Reiki treatments had on the patients. The immediate response was always of deep relaxation, and since most of the pain is a result of tension and resistance often the pain would decrease so that the person could rest and be more comfortable. The energy of Reiki works also at a deeper level. Often the patient after a treatment would begin to talk, maybe for the first time about his/her transition, not only the concerns about leaving the loved one but especially the sense of peace they had experienced in accepting their imminent departure. “During the treatment I realized that this illness has been a great teacher, it showed me all the gifts I have received in my life and now I am able to be grateful, I am ready now, this is the perfect moment in which to leave, I have had a good life “(Giuseppe) The energy of Reiki seems to have the power to awaken and bring to consciousness what we need to see, experience and feel at that moment, in that situation. A powerful journey into the unknown territories of our true selves. I find this truly magical and divine.
