THE BADGER Summer - Autumn 2023

Page 1

THE BADGER

The Badger is a fierce animal, very much respected and honored both in Northern American Native traditions and in European Celtic ones.

A badger will not let go and will continue tenaciously to look for another way to tackle his/her goal, just like a good healer will not let go his/her search until the best solution is found for the person in need. Badgers have their homes underground, so that they can go to the roots of things, the good healer does the same and keeps looking until she/he can find the most profound reason for a dis-ease or a psychological issue.

We use the term healer in the very broad sense of somebody who takes care of a another person, be it a MD, a nurse, a psychotherapist, a physiotherapist, a masseuse, a spiritual healer. Whenever there is a person in need and somebody who takes care of her/him, that is a healer.

Sometimes the need is subtler and more profound than a simple medical intervention, the human touch is needed and it really is the Panacea that cures all diseases.

We believe all artistic expressions in their beauty, science for everyday life, spirituality, philosophy, food and the healing arts are beneficial to restoring that balance, health and sense of worth that each and every human being deserves.

We offer you THE BADGER, the persistent healer, all the articles come from experts in different fields, each person has his/her own idea of what a balanced life is, they are here to pass on information, give inspiration, receive your comments, suggestions, contributions. Each human being holds in his/her hands at least one of the keys, let's continue our quest!

THE BADGER YEAR 9 VOLUME 1

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the new BADGER Volume, our new publishing time is connected to the solstices, the times when the wheel of seasons reaches its apex and continues its eternal cycle.

We have already published 8 years of celebrations of seasons and life!

When I first started this adventure, I had a vague notion of where I wanted us to go with it. The passing of time has shown me and all the partners, as well as the authors who are still with THE BADGER, that we are in a sacred wheel, where all the points of the compass are equally appreciated, studied and lived, so that they can bring their fruits in the lives both of the people directly connected to THE BADGER and the many readers around the world.

We started with our number 0 (November 2014), so full of technical mistakes and, at the same time, a door to the future. The first 4 years were devoted to a deep and meaningful dance of the East, the place of dawn, of enlightenment, of the high-flying hawk that can see everything at a glance, so that there will be a visionary seed to be planted in the ground of life. The first 4 years were experiments, taking new paths, exploring, opening the eyes of our inner mental awareness. With the intensity of the spring season, the new eyes searched everywhere for the truth. Life is an adventure.

Then we moved to the south of our wheel, the place where 1 becomes 2, where we are confronted with the emotions of our lives and the lives of those around us. Sometimes we may feel overwhelmed, and we may think that the once clear vision from springtime is lost in the intricate details of daily life.

Nevertheless, at this stage the seed of vision was firmly planted and lovingly cared for, so that it could grow and bear fruits, filled with the sun of ripening summer, so that we could be nourished by such hard work.

Now we face 4 years of a new dance, the dance of the West, the place of both action and reflection. That seed planted in spring, flowered bearing fruit in summer, now it is ready to feed us and when we eat the fruit of our labor we are forever transformed and ready for wise action, mediated by the depth of contemplation in the dark cavern of autumn. Now we can dream new projects and act on them, so that they will bear new fruits in the future.

This is a time to look after our Mother Earth, our Father Sky and all the beings, so that the future we entrust to our descendants is livable and in line with our ancestors’ dreams.

Eventually, in 2027, we will reach our last round of 4 years to celebrate the north, the place where that visionary spring seed has sprouted, taken roots, and grown in summer, it has given us nourishment in autumn, and now in the north we have a chance to distill the knowledge acquired into perennial wisdom. By honoring the place of our ancestors, we realign ourselves with our true mission on Earth and make peace with all aspects of our lives.

The North is also the place where the red road of incarnation starts, our ancestors lovingly placed us here to walk in awareness, and light up all aspects of our lives.

In my studies, long ago, but time does not really exist, so it is like yesterday, I learnt the Varnashrama Dharma, the traditional Indian division of casts and tasks, in that vision there were 4 stages: from the student and lover, whose task is to study life in all its aspect, to the paterfamilias, whose task was to look after the daily things of life and protect his family, to the dweller in the forests, who could still have some possessions with him, but had already started to dedicate his life to contemplation, eventually the hermit, who renounced all of social life concerns in order to retire into contemplation.

Like all great metaphors, I soon realized that none of these descriptions is only literal, although there are people living in this way, but – just like the metaphor of the medicine wheel- everything happens all at once.

We are forever having new ideas/visions, we are forever studying new aspects of life, as eternal students.

We are forever tending to our emotions and the daily chores of life, protecting those we love.

We are forever retiring somewhere quiet and dark inside us, in nature, whenever possible, in order to contemplate our next steps and move wisely.

We are forever in deep communion, or we can be if we so choose, with all that is around us, with the deep source of all of life and the long line of ancestors who paved the way for our path.

Thank you for following us so far, the next chapters are going to be different from the past and just as exciting.

A BLESSING FOR WHAT’S NEXT

Francis Rico

Considering the wild ride that we’ve experienced over the past three years, it’s a relief to be here right now, in a short but sweet “grace period.”

Here in the summer of 2023, we find ourselves in a moment of energetic calm, a short moment before the unprecedented and profoundly energetic waves of energy flowing through our Solar System from the center of our galaxy become the most significant thing to ever happen in human history.

This is the perfect time for us to consider what is supporting our celebration of life, and what isn’t.

This is the perfect time for a cool appraisal of the extent to which the containment system of our “civilization” is compromising you.

The fear-based trance inducing systems that have governed our world have been designed to disempower you by enforcing a state of chronic contraction and distress.

And on so many fronts, this chronic condition has become an emergency for life on our planet.

It is necessary for us to discontinue whatever compromises and accommodations we have made in the name of playing it safe, staying within the lines, and not rocking the boat!

And none of us have to look very far! We can consider our families, and education, and how we were domesticated: so many of us internalized paralyzing mixed messages: like that we are simultaneously not enough and way too much.

But rather than taking the next 10 years for a necessary house cleaning, clearing the decks, and off-loading of the dysfunctional debris of our upbringing with some sort of “psychological” process, there is another way for us to clean up our acts.

Grandfather Joseph Rael teaches that we can simply align ourselves with the great life affirming Harmony of the Vast Self in the here and now – aligning ourselves with the uncontainable YES of Creation’s ever fresh flowering upwelling into every moment!

He also teaches that effort is Holy - and the effort necessary now is for each of us to become honest.

It will take bravery to become honest, and to say what we really see, to speak truth to “power.”

Starting with being willing to see what is, we can move out of the centrifugal force field of our world’s three-ring circus of distraction, damage, and despair.

And by being willing to respond to the multiple over-lapping emergencies that face life on earth, we move into a deep inner alignment with the flow of love and the sparkling innate intelligence of Creation!

This is the gift of Living Ceremony: by aligning with Creation, we’re easily able to access and flow with our innate giftedness. We recover our natural agility.

Our creativity ignites, along with our capacity to love and care.

We experience stepping out of the isolation of imagining that we have seperate identities, and we begin to collaborate and cooperate – and we truly communicate!

And the reward for this effort? In appreciation for the gift of life, we celebrate!

Yes - it seems weird that a celebration can happen simultaneously with our world on fire. With our world freezing or flooding or becoming a desert.

Let’s take a look at what’s happening:

The very same irresistible flowing harmony emanating from Source that is supporting and amplifying our unique and essential gifts to life – the flow of abundance that Joseph saw as the gift of a divine cosmic cornucopia vortex - is the same powerful energetic flow that is presently disintegrating the predatory exploitive systems and structures that have governed, exploited, and severely damaged our world.

These systems are failing from within, due to their core lack of integrity – and they’ll take you down with them, unless you step out of the compromises that they demand of you.

Yes – it’s heartbreaking that our species has brought life on our beautiful little planet almost to the point of no return… but the movement towards repair, restoration, renewal and recovery of wellbeing is up to us - and it starts with something profoundly life affirming and regenerative occurring within you.

Yes, the blessing possible for life now is you!

And, so, we come back to us - to our community of open hearts choosing to live with love, and without fear. We chant for Peace and wellness. And we keep dancing.

And through our broken hearts, the impossibly bright light of YES from the Vast Self shines: illuminating our lives and bringing light to the challenges that face us.

This YES – this light - is what you are inviting in.

Let’s make this simple: it’s time for us to take action! And if ever there was a time to stand up for life, this is it!

We are the ones capable of love in action – and being love in action is the ultimate art of living.

You bring a blessing into our world when you respond to the challenges and emergencies that we face by stepping into alignment with life, by co-creating a new “reality” from our hearts – a reality that includes everything we've learned, and everything we've yearned for: peace, respect, sharing, well-being for all, abundance for all, caring for and celebrating life in a sane, compassionate, and collaborative world.

Here’s our bottom line: being in the world, wild and free-spirited, with love in our hearts, is our most effective strategy for bringing healing and sanity to our world.

With love, Francis Rico Teotihuacan, Mexico

TAKING CENTRE STAGE

Antonella Vicini

It is time to take center stage…

For the longest time I have wanted and chosen to be behind the scenes: organizing, writing, creating space for other people to feel at ease with themselves and me. I have never wanted to be in the limelight, somehow refusing to appear to be in charge. Recently, I watched a tv show on dance, where some would be choreographers were asked to dance with their groups. Some didn’t like the idea, some were always center stage. At first their “central” attitude bothered me, then I realized that this was my main issue: not wanting that responsibility.

I know this is a time of deep transformation for me, so I need to be patient while the new me emerges into the butterfly ready to fly into a new life. Even if I am not a young woman now, life is still full of surprises, nothing stands in the way of me living a great life. The only real obstacle, as ever, is inside: it’s me!

If I get out of my way, then reaching and living the life I want is possible, it is real, it is here and now.

How many times in our lives do we get a chance to consciously go through a metamorphosis and be the whole of who we are?

Mentally, I can answer as many as we can imagine.

Emotionally, perhaps not so many (please) because sometimes they may hurt.

Physically, as many as we apply ourselves whole-heartedly.

Spiritually, it happens all the time, because it is an ongoing process.

While mental and spiritual evolution is welcome and finds me open and willing; the emotional part has been draining at times, with unexpected highs and lows; physically is perhaps the hardest for me to face, especially after a very long neglect.

Nevertheless, Alea iacta est*, it is time for action, to take risks, a time of having to face my fears and failures, as well as my joys and successes.

It is time to take center stage in my life, taking responsibility for myself fully, whatever the outcome.

The first image, in the previous page, was a great inspiration for this article: this is my initial position, all closed in, holding onto past and present, nothing is open to the world, and it can be fascinating, remaining forever captive of a life I already know.

The colors of the emotions are so intense and saturated, like the feelings that accompany them, the lines form a tight prison from which nothing can escape. All the defenses have been erected with care, with long preparation, almost with love, but they are now suffocating the soul they were supposed to protect from pain. This is the unbearable quandary now.

It is time to take flight and be something different from before, hence the message from the second photo on the next page: a butterfly is sucking the sweetness of life from a flower with delicate and tender colors like the spring that generated it.

This is how I feel: finally enjoying life in all its small details and big events. Life is sweet regardless of my circumstances, for which I take full responsibility.

The last image in the next page invites a different reflection: this is the future, one of the new possible shapes that my life may take, there is beauty, harmony, a hard core of strength and determination, the tenderness of petals and the transparency of being constantly and consciously under the light of spirit.

There are still some moments of disbelief that I can actually reach such a future, but every little step in that direction leads me closer to my goal, even if I cannot know the how and the exact aspect of my future. Along the way I have learnt to be patient, to let go of control, so that I can enjoy how the universe is going to support me no matter what.

It is a journey worth taking and continuing all the way!

With affection for all my fellow travelers across the universe.

NOTE: *Alea in Latin were the dice, so the literal meaning of the entire sentence was : the dice have been cast, but the actual significance was in the word, that also means risk, if I take a risk I will bear its consequences as well.

DANCING THE DANCE

Hello to everyone. I pray everyone is doing well.

In May of 2022, I combined the Sun Moon Dance, inspired by my Father Beautiful Painted Arrow, with the Southern Ute Bear Dance, my tribe.

This is the story of how this came to be ….

My tribe’s Bear Dance is held in early springtime. It is a Renewal/Spring ceremony for my Southern Ute people, it is an awakening of Mother Earth after the long Winter slumber, it is a coming together of all people, it holds many metaphors ….

I was inspired to combine the Sun Moon Dance and the Southern Ute Bear Dance. I was guided by Spirit, I did not consciously choose it, it chose to come through, me.

Before and during the pandemic our Sun Moon and my tribe Southern Ute Bear Dance kept falling on the same weekend.

The Sun Moon Dance date is set by Adrienne the landowner and me in the Pagosa Springs. I am retired, so we must come up with a date that works for Adrienne, as she works multiple jobs. I am just deeply grateful that Adrienne offered me a place to Chief my father ’s vision of the Sun Moon Dances.

In 2021 I moved the Dance date to a completely different MONTH to avoid the same Dance date. I went to an extreme by changing the month to ensure that we would NOT have the same Dance date. I didn’t know what to make of it when it happened a third time!?

As Sun Moon Dance Chief, I prayed and I called out to the Universe, “Why, WHY is this happening?! Please, PLEASE help me to understand.”

It was NEVER an intention whatsoever to hold our Sun Moon Dance ceremony on my tribe’s same Bear Dance date.

I realized that the reason would reveal itself at the right time, and it did… Every year, I take my two brothers, whose care I oversee, to enjoy our Southern Ute Bear Dance. One may want to attend the Powwow or the other may want to enjoy buffalo stew and fry bread or visit with family & friends.

The answer eventually came I would have to integrate the two Dance Ceremonies ….

On Memorial Day (last weekend in May 2022, because this Ceremony happens EVERY Memorial weekend) our Sun Moon Dance participants traveled down the mountain and headed west then south to Ignacio Colorado. Everyone in our group was very, VERY humbled by the experience and VERY happy they attended!

Ignacio is the home of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.

Friday morning is our Southern Ute Bear Dance Blessing Ceremony. The Dance Chief of the Bear Dance blesses the arbor and the people.

Our Southern Ute Bear Dance Chief, Matthew Box blessed the Dance grounds and the people, while we were waiting for our Montessori children to arrive.

It is very important to include our children in these sacred ceremonies, as they ARE the future of our tribe. We Danced together, later all the people in attendance were invited as my tribe guests for lunch at our convention center.

A senior student and Chief of my father’s BPA community, a very dear woman recently mailed me a leather jacket with tobacco, sage and a 50dollar bill, in a pocket.

She wanted me to give it as a gift to someone for their service, or at our next Sun Moon Dance. I told her that I had asked a young man from the west coast to honor us by conducting our Sweat Lodge this year and that would be a perfect gift for him. I asked her if she might come to the Sun Moon Dance, unfortunately, she couldn’t, as she had an international trip planned.

I spoke to her about what I had done with combining the two Dance Ceremonies. I heard her crying.

I wondered to myself, “What had I said to upset her?” When she could speak again, she said, “Do you know what you’ve done?”

I said, “No, I haven’t thought much about it. I prayed for an answer as to why our Dance ceremonies kept “stepping” on one another and the message was clear. Bring both ceremonies together.”

She said, “You are combining your tribes Bear Dance & your father ’ s vision of the Sun Moon Dance, you are uniting ALL of the people!”

I find that more and more people have a deep hunger for this type of enlightenment and meditation. This is my contribution.

Lifelong Education Reconsidered Part 1

Fredric Lehrman

Hello, Class.

Today, you are in "Kindergarten."

What do you remember about that?

There are as many answers to that question as there are children in your classroom.

You may be sitting on the floor in a circle, listening to the "Teacher" speaking to you, perhaps saying something about how happy she or he is to see you, and then asking you to raise your hand and "tell us your name, and how you feel about what you will discover in getting to know each other and meeting new friends." Or the teacher might say, "Tell us how you came here today, what you would like to begin learning first." Or, "What is your favorite thing in life... and what makes you happy?"

Each of these questions may cause you to feel happy or shy, but if you have a "good" teacher you will probably feel safer. If you have a teacher who starts by telling you their name, and then tells you something they like to do.

If "school" starts this way, you will feel safer and perhaps eager to begin to open up and start to enjoy the process of getting to know each other.

How long has it been since you remembered such things? Your first year in "Preschool" may be mostly lost in memory for many reasons... and, your subsequent experience may have been shaped by shyness, confusion, and "not knowing" what to say.

Do you still struggle with some of those feelings?

I am writing these things because I was very shy about many things all the way through to my Sixth Year in an experimental school in midtown New York City. I was the youngest and smallest student in my large class of "high IQ", one of four classes of about 25 students each who were being "tested" to prove they were "smart."

Every week we were given a new test on Friday, just to see how our classes were holding up to the challenge. I was nowhere near the smart end of the ladder. But I did get very good at "guessing."

By the time our sixth year was completed, we all had to transfer to new schools, so my father put me into McBurney, an all-boys 7th grade school on the West side of Central Park. My strongest memories are: Playing Ping Pong; Soccer practice, an English teacher named Mr. Finser who surprised us one morning by coming to school with a strange black case that distracted us for 30 minutes while we took another test about a book assignment, after which he collected the test the papers, opened the case, and pulled out a gleaming brass trumpet that he played brilliantly until the bell rang.

That was the high point of the first half of seventh grade. The second semester had me failing English for about two months, for which I had to stay after school to "make up" on my grammar under the watchful eyes of the school principal named Dr. Bam who had been imported from South Africa.

He taught me how to analyze and "diagram" paragraphs using serious books of literary merit. Somehow, I caught on to this quickly, and finished the year with an A- in this arcane skill (and I was very thankful to Dr. Bam). I never heard about the technique again, because I got my father to "get me out of that school!"

My struggles in 8th through 12th grades at Rudolph Steiner High School... (the first of its kind in North America) ...had a different dynamic. My class had about 18 students, some of which changed in the following five years.

We were the third class to reach the Senior year, and we finally vanquished all the larger high school Soccer teams that had crushed us as we struggled against them on the way up (they were always older and larger). As Seniors, we knew all the tricks! Most of us managed to get into acceptable colleges. I wanted to stay in New York to continue my musical studies on the classical guitar, which was the first of many careers. That's another story, But, once again, I survived the academic challenges along the way up, leading a double life as I floated on into graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania, studying Ethnomusicology for two years before going full time into concert playing. What a relief!

I know that this story may seem strange, but it allowed me to clearly see that academic education was not my style. However, it probably saved my life, as I might otherwise possibly have been a dead soldier in Korea or Viet Nam.

The purpose of my telling you all of this is to allow you to review your education, whether good or bad, and to ask yourself, was it worth it? "Standard Education" evolved in the 19th Century in Europe and America. Before that, education was predominantly technical or spiritual, depending on the "trade" or vocation the individual had in their career speculations. Medical and technical schools were created for the students who were interested in those skills, whether chemistry, law, politics, engineering, etc. (in other words, mental or physical crafts) that appealed to a select student demand.

The modern universities of the present century are no longer required as they were in the 20th Century on the insistence of a diploma or a merit badge or a uniform. Those avocations are dependent on the "Spirit" of the individual student, in other words, a life choice. Those schools are still active, but the technology of education has broadened through the Internet.

Perhaps we will see the older "great" universities concentrating their efforts on research rather than "graduation" before the year 2050 has come and gone.

Think about this, and it will free you of the obligation to struggle for years to obtain a piece of parchment when you can yourself embody the heart, mind, and communication skills that the entire planet is longing for.

THE HEALING ARTS OF HAWAII Pohaikalani

Hāloa.

The plant of the Hawaiian lifeblood garden. The plant of the Kanaka (humanity) lifeblood.

Hā means breath. Loa means long.

That is what Hawaiians take whenever they enter a garden of kalo. Taro.

Take a deep breath. Hold. Breathe out.

Hāloa is our mystic first brother. He is the giver of food for perpetuity.

I was not sure what I would write about in this sharing until I ventured into our community garden and realized that we had kalo growing in almost every garden plot.

What a lovely story that becomes.

Do you see its heart shaped leaves?

Do you see its piko (belly button)?

Look closely to see its veins. So much like you and me. Its leaves are called lau. Nice flat and spread out.

You cut right below the leaf when picking it to keep the leaf intact for making lūʻau, a spinach mixed with creamy coconut milk, what a beautiful form of nutrients for your body this food gives!

The huli is the stem portion of the plant. It too is edible, but not my favorite part. It is like a part of you that has toughened through time, but it still serves a purpose. What could that be for you? I wonder…

The oha of the corm is a little bit of stem and a scalping of the corm. That is then replanted for the next generation to crop. Oha is where the word Ohana comes from meaning family. The oha grows profusely on the kalo stalk.

The corm is the kalo corms main gift.

Once it is cleaned, it is then cut and boiled. We eat it as a potato side dish. Hawaiians enjoy it with fish as a blended poi dish. This takes quite a liking for some to enjoy, I would say it is an acquired taste. This paste is mixed well with coconut milk and given to infants as a first cereal.

Take a deep breath.

Hold.

Breathe out.

I would suggest a spiritual journey to visit our brother plant Hāloa. If possible, join me as I beat a rhythm upon the ipu heke, the Hawaiian double gourd. As you come to meet Hāloa, ask your questions about your connectedness to this magnificent plant.

The answers are just for you.

Amama Ua Noa.

And so it is.

Poem 48

The morning sea of silence broke into ripples of bird songs; and the flowers were all merry by the roadside; and the wealth of gold was scattered through the rift of the clouds while we busily went on our way and paid no heed.

We sang no glad songs nor played; we went not to the village for barter; we spoke not a word nor smiled; we lingered not on the way. We quickened our pace more and more as the time sped by.

The sun rose to the mid sky and doves cooed in the shade. Withered leaves danced and whirled in the hot air of noon. The shepherd boy drowsed and dreamed in the shadow of the banyan tree, and I laid myself down by the water and stretched my tired limbs on the grass.

My companions laughed at me in scorn; they held their heads high and hurried on; they never looked back nor rested; they vanished in the distant blue haze. They crossed many meadows and hills, and passed through strange, far-away countries.

All honour to you, heroic host of the interminable path! Mockery and reproach pricked me to rise, but found no response in me. I gave myself up for lost in the depth of a glad humiliation in the shadow of a dim delight.

The repose of the sun-embroidered green gloom slowly spread over my heart. I forgot for what I had travelled, and I surrendered my mind without struggle to the maze of shadows and songs.

At last, when I woke from my slumber and opened my eyes, I saw thee standing by me, flooding my sleep with thy smile. How I had feared that the path was long and wearisome, and the struggle to reach thee was hard!

Rabindranath Tagore

From Gitanjali, English Translation from the Original Bengali, 1913

POEM 62

WHEN I bring to you coloured toys, my child, I understand why there is such a play of colours on clouds, on water, and why flowers are painted in tints when I give coloured toys to you, my child.

When I sing to make you dance I truly know why there is music in leaves, and why waves send their chorus of voices to the heart of the listening earth when I sing to make you dance.

When I bring sweet things to your greedy hands I know why there is honey in the cup of the flower and why fruits are secretly filled with sweet juice ⎯ when I bring sweet things to your greedy hands.

When I kiss your face to make you smile, my darling, I surely understand what the pleasure is that streams from the sky in morning light, and what delight that is which the summer breeze brings to my body when I kiss you to make you smile.

VOICES FROM THE STARS

Jupiter in Taurus and the Sublimation of Matter

Where the Sacred Fire no longer manifests itself because it is covered with many layers of dense and structured matter, Life bursts in with its Force to make its way in the evolutionary immobilism. This is what has happened to us with the passage of Uranus in Taurus, which will end in 2026 with the entry of the planet into the next sign Gemini.

Taurus is the second sign of the zodiacal sequence, it represents the power of Fire to incarnate, take on consistency and solidity. With Aries, the Life Principle immerses itself in the wheel of linear Time; with Taurus, an earth sign, it gets bottled up in the limitation of the Form.

The journey within the zodiacal circle represents the formation on Earth of the complex visible manifestation, which materializes through what we call the Law of Survival. The three Kingdoms, animal vegetable mineral act driven and supported by this Law which governs the biological aspect of Nature. The appearance on the planet of Man, the fourth Kingdom, led to a faster evolution…or involution? What has been missing in our contemporary, crippled, highly technological, materialistic, molecularity world, which seems to be dictatorially consecrated to creative slavery, commanded by obscurantist forces that deny the existence of the Sacred Fire and the diffusion of His Incarnate Word?

The answer is:

Man's Consciousness has been missing, that stance, that centering of the heart that makes each of us the Presence of the Divine on Earth. JUPITER

In the first exploratory and experiential rides on the carousel of the twelve signs, in which we immerse ourselves completely in the natural Law of Survival that outlines us and pushes us into incarnated life, we forget our celestial origin which, from life to life, we must learn to recognize, reveal and bring into manifestation.

In the following laps we slowly learn to 'spiritualize' the Matter we have identified with. Little by little we free ourselves from earthly laws to immerse ourselves in the highest Cosmic Law which harmoniously and inexorably governs everything. Thus, we bring the Divine to Earth by acknowledging its emissaries!

Removing the dense 12 layers, which cover our divine spark, involves a series of tests and 'cumbersome' emotional repercussions, well described in the Twelve Labors of Hercules by theosophist Alice Bailey.

Hercules is the Hero who awakens in us the moment we raise our eyes to Heaven.

From the first to the twelfth labor/sign, each stage is a test which, if/when passed, opens a door within us which introduces us into a new and unknown inner space. Each time, a veil hiding the Truth dissipates, we move towards refulgence, that diffused luminescence that does not create a shadow because it is omnipresent radiation.

The evolutionary aspect in the zodiacal wheel is not a circular, but a spiral movement. Taurus has become the stage in which the Hero can transform and sublimate the matter of his biological physicality to make himself suitable for receiving the powerful cosmic energy, reaching through infinite and infinitesimal particles of light.

Having freed the path from the veils of the Great Illusion, we start again with Aries, the spark recognized as such that ignites and makes all things new, and Taurus which offers us the illuminated vision.

It is said that the Buddha was born, enlightened and left his physical body at the full moon of Taurus. Alice Bailey in the Labors of Hercules condenses the true essence of Taurus in one sentence 'I see and when the eye is open all is light'. The open eye is the Third Eye, the one that sees everything.

Positions of Jupiter in the Zodiac Wheel

In order to draw the symbol of Jupiter, , we start with the curl that creates a wave, a spiral, idea of movement, and continue concluding with an intersection, a cross, with the idea of rooting. This is the primary meaning of Jupiter:

"I take from the universe and take root in the earth."

Since there is no concept of limitation, shortage or misery in the universe, Jupiter represents expansion, prosperity, abundance, protection and ultimately, foresight.

It is domiciled in Sagittarius and Pisces, both above the horizon and Neptune, yearning and aspiring to unknown (Sagittarius) and unlimited (Pisces) spaces.

We need a good dose of openness, optimism, and an amplified and expanded vision that only Jupiter's energy can give, to embark on a journey into the unknown,

According to a path defined as 'initiatory', Jupiter also activates the strings of Virgo and Aquarius, in this case they vibrate according to a rhythm that is no longer biological but connected to the soul, activating the more evolutionary and balancing forces of the two signs. Virgo is the incorrupt Mother who prepares to welcome and nourish the incarnation of the Christic light (Pisces), to choose the seed (Libra) and to be fertilized by it (Scorpio). The French Gothic cathedrals of Notre-Dame (Our Lady) were erected according to the position of the stars in the constellation Virgo. The Jovian note of Aquarius is instead the sustainability of the multi-faceted reality in which each entity maintains its individual gradient although perfectly integrated into the whole.

The vision extends to both lower and higher worlds which, without haste or obligation, communicate for the common good.

Jupiter in Taurus

Jupiter travels the Zodiac in twelve years, 30° each year. It entered Taurus in May 2023, where it will transit until May 2024.

At the first level, that of survival, the planets are often 'used' in a manipulative and deceitful way to distort true reality and tame the weakest minds. We can all see how economics, politics, war conflicts are leading Humanity towards an abyss.

Regardless of this current situation, we can try to interpret the planetary passages from a higher point of observation. We take the lift and go up to the upper floors, more rarefied and closer to the light source.

We go up from our first chakras to the upper ones and try to position ourselves on that of the Third Eye where the frequencies are more 'meditative'. From this position it is easier to amplify the vision and lighten the weight that suffocates the spirit. The aim is not to escape but to transform. The planetary forces retain their fundamental note, but as they go higher, they also change frequency.

According to Lisa Morpurgo's methodology, the exaltation of Jupiter is in Taurus, and it is the one we are going to 'read', strictly inherent to its current transit.

Upon entering Taurus, Jupiter immediately found itself having to deal with Pluto as soon as it entered Aquarius. The powerful quadrature aspect formed in the sky from our terrestrial angle immediately manifested itself in unprepared, or less balanced, minds as a shock and an unbalancing short circuit, capable of bringing to their knees those who built on clay. Pluto doesn't give discounts and sometimes not even the Jovian protective force can be able to counter Pluto's mighty strategies if we are positioned on... the 'ground floor'!

Let's go up and reach a higher level of view, where Jupiter presents itself as a vital force that feeds our thoughts and actions with its light. The quadrature that forms with Pluto is well placed at the beginning of Aquarius, it is no longer an element of destruction, but becomes an opportunity to bring to the surface every smallest trauma, lack or suffering forgotten in the psychic depths that one has not yet had the courage to face.

Freedom and the courage to express the truth of who we are need clarity and cleansing of any toxic psycho-emotional waste. In this way we can re-invent ourselves as beings capable of emanating harmonizing frequencies.

This process is not without suffering since everything that needs to be cleaned up and become crystalline must necessarily pass through the Center of the beating heart.

It is a process which, albeit painful, creates a golden bridge between the physical heart and the soul heart. Integrating each other by resonance, they begin to cooperate for the common good and the evolution of the whole planet. At this level of expression Jupiter is declined as a quality of Love and Wisdom and manifests itself as an acceptance of the heart, a healing force and conscious expansiveness.

During its current transit in Taurus, in addition to the initial square with Pluto, Jupiter will come into contact with other planetary forces:

In June 2023 he will dialogue with Saturn in Pisces. In mutual assonance, the two Planets have great projects in store for us, if we keep ourselves open with their emanation. Becoming aware of our inner joy and willingness to express it will help us receive their messages.

Jupiter will be retrograde from September to December and from that position it will still speak to Saturn through the golden ratio of 72°, to reiterate that thanks to our will we can become increasingly aware of the crystalline consciousness, the Christ Consciousness that inhabits us.

Before leaving Taurus, to enter Gemini, Jupiter will put itself at the service of the three transpersonal Planets, Uranus Neptune Pluto (respectively in sextile and trine conjunction), to give us the confirmation to continue our journey of Light and keep our thoughts firmly on the Divine Purpose to make manifest on Earth: Beauty, Love and Harmony.

The transit of Jupiter in Taurus requires us to 'Sublimate' the matter of which we are made of and in which we live.

QUILTING AWAY Aging with Reiki

I still have the old quilt.

I have begun to repair my fraying fading quilt’s worn-out edges by replacing some of the fabric faithfully maintaining the pattern of the original quilt. History is hidden in every stitch and every piece so that its character must persist and endure.

I continue to reflect on the symbolism, and I muse about “the character” I so carefully want to maintain and preserve. What does it say about the person and my character?

The quilt in its “oldness” displays its distinguished character but it’s nowhere near dying. Even threadbare from overuse it has acquired character, from utility, and familiarity.

James Hillman writes in The Force of Character: and the Lasting Life:

“Character manifests itself fully through a long life, it lasts through all the events of a long existence, and it stays constant from start to finish. Our mind nor our body stay the same. It could not avoid change. What endures, is our unique psychological components that mark us as being different from all other individuals”.

Personally, I have changed in many ways. I’m a different person, yet despite the changes something continues to assure me of my sameness. As Hillman states: “Character provides a lasting core.”

My practice of Reiki, thirty plus years of practice and mastery, have deeply influenced and brought to awareness the process of my physiological and psychological changes, despite my resistances.

Revisiting the events, I recognize that some of my character’s sharp edges have smoothed out. Thorny aspects of my character have softened, and I’m more flexible and welcoming. I’m less likely to distance myself and be cold with others. In time, I have discovered within me a warm and softer part. I am more prone to smiling and not taking myself too seriously.

Reiki has been fundamental; it has opened doors to new perceptions and levels of understanding of the daily events in my inner and outer life. Life’s no longer unidimensional but I now see its different meanings and wisdom, and “Recognize the beauty that is hidden from usual sight” (Hillman)

Like a quilt, there are many pieces /aspects of a personality, fitting them into psychological integration is a lifetime process. The various pieces are like “a full company on stage”, as at the end of an Opera when everyone takes a bow in front of the clapping audience

As we age, the elaboration of these different aspects of our character is part of our “life review” and takes up more and more of our hours.

Hillman suggests that we want to see our aging body as a source of wisdom. Our most important teacher.

“Biological systems and psychological fields are asking to be read for their intelligence.”

What does it mean that my/your sight is dimming, hearing challenged, or body shrinking?...

Perhaps our eyesight dims because we no longer need nor want to look at the details. We favor imaginative insight, the odd, the uniqueness, the eccentric.

But this could be another conversation, to be continued…

BREATHING UNDER WATER

Human beings are made for the Earth, but something in us still remembers where we came from: the great primeval waters where life started so long ago.

That’s why some of us learn how to conquer this element, not just superficially, but into the depths, perhaps to find their real roots, or simply to admire the beauty of the seas.

This is a serious and challenging activity, it requires physical and mental preparation, both before, during and after each dive. It takes a toll on the body and requires strict and ever-present discipline in order to be safe in all conditions.

It certainly is an aesthetic experience: the fish are so colored, the vegetation is in constant movement, flowing in the submarine currents, the entire world is perennially flowing, but it seems to be doing it with an inner and yet palpable harmony.

Like finding an octopus and playing with it, no desire to kill or eat it, but a pull to understand and get in touch with an intelligence different from ours.

Some divers would like to “grow gills” to be at one with the sea and its inhabitants, sharing the majesty of the uninterrupted silence, without the noise of the tanks and the ever-present bubbles that betray the human origin of the visitors.

Deeply in love with the feeling of expansion and communion with the sea and its creatures, the divers still need to be aware of their technical equipment from which they depend for their survival. It is a way to know oneself, because it takes discipline to save oxygen in order to stay under water for as long as possible.

In a way, diving, like all human activities performed with commitment and awareness, is a spiritual discipline that leads to better and improved self-knowledge, a prerequisite for real inner growth.

Every gesture, every photo is a declaration of love for the sea and its inhabitants: the multicolored tropical fish swimming around the garden of corals; the powerful and huge sharks, so supple in their movements, could frighten the divers, but the experienced ones know how to approach them; or gliding along the meadows of Posidonia (Posidonia Oceanica), discovering species never encountered before, this is the “catch” for the day.

In some parts of the world, especially in the Mediterranean, divers can also visit or even discover treasures from the past: ancient villas now sunk under the sea, lost cargo with important information from long ago, beautiful statues that share their message of harmony from centuries past. This is exactly what happened to the Riace Bronzes, found by chance, they quickly became one of the wonders of the ancient world.

Learning to live and thrive underwater is one the human challenges, its discoveries are countless and the attraction never ceases, even when people stop going underwater, the memories of those silent flights among the submarine wonders remain in their heart and senses.

This article is the result of many conversations with F.P. and R.R., who has also donated many photos for this article. I am grateful to my friends for their stories.

CRYSTAL CONTINUUM

The priest in charge of Daniel’s baptism was the black sheep of the Church. In the past, there had been some complaints about his unorthodox ways of interpreting the Holy Book. There were also concerns regarding the customs and rituals on display for the appeasement and self-reassurance of those still attending Sunday mass and the myriad of smaller religious weekly celebrations.

In the Normies’ eyes, such gestures were more sacrilegious than the innuendo that the priest had had an affair with a socially secure woman or young lad. Somehow, the mere suggestion of deviant behavior in the past sent everyone’s consciousness into mental somersaults until it became a de facto reality.

High-ranking investigations into these complaints cleared the priest. No one knew if he had connections in those high places or if the Church was on another leg of transformation from within. This time, perhaps it would sway toward leniency.

On that fall day, when Daniel became a member of the blessed family, Father Dimitrie had the instinct or maybe it was divine guidance to add even more awkwardness to the list previously compiled by his detractors.

He materialized a pointy, ten-inch hexagonal-shaped quartz crystal from the folds of his brocaded robes just before submerging submerged in the lukewarm water waiting for him in the copper bowl resting on wooden legs.

Daniel’s parents young and intimidated by the baritone voice as it bounced off the walls depicting angels, holy men with golden auras around their heads, enacting allegoric scenes from the same book the priest was reading would relinquish any control over what the clergy representative might do to the boy. As secondgeneration immigrants, for them, the Church was where you went for weddings and baptisms, and a bit overwhelming overall.

“In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, I bless this child to become a pillar of the community, a clarion call heard and followed by many.” The priest cleared his throat and placed the crystal in the tiny hands that grabbed it as tightly as if it were a lifeline. Daniel didn’t squirm or wriggle as the cleric’s right arm embraced his body like a tentacle while the left hand gently clamped together his nostrils.

One…two…three, and the boy was awash in the holy water, not to mention imbued with the crystal’s vibrations.

Daniel squeaked a miau in lieu of his acceptance of this landmark in his life. His godmother, a plump forty-something red-haired woman, rushed toward him, a puffy towel hung over her extended arms, ready to welcome the boy, comfort him, and dress him in white silk pants, brocaded jacket, and miniature white leather shoes. Days later, the garb would be returned to the young family as a memento of the day.

“Father, Daniel won’t release the crystal,” his godmother said apologetically. Tears of happiness had left black marks on her cheeks, turning her into the perfect embodiment of another famous religious celebration from a distant country: the Day of the Dead.

“No need to take it away. It is his to use and protect,” the priest said with a smug smile. “Let him hold it for a while. He won’t hurt himself.”

“Does it have a particular meaning?” the boy’s father asked, scratching his right ear from which hung an ouroboros-like silver ring. His kept beard, combed hair, and suit, even with its worn-out patches, gave the priest a good vibe.

“Yes, it has meaning for him. In fact, he will discover its purpose when he gets older. Just don’t hide it away. I see Daniel standing tall in front of others, living by example, giving hope.”

The young man nodded.

The family and guests left the church, on their way to gorge themselves at a Mandarin restaurant nearby.

Liliana’s face had mesmerized Daniel since grade five. He wasn’t aware of the concept of love at first sight, so he treated the wave of heat and obsession with her he felt as a curiosity.

She had arrived as a new student from a corner of the country he’d never heard of, but when the teacher introduced her, the sound of the word Miami had a flare of aristocracy about it, an air of happiness that, for whatever reason, made him happy, too.

***

The quartz crystal entrusted to him at his baptism had turned him into a crystal enthusiast of sorts. It was the lens through which he perceived the world around him. He noticed the emeralds where Liliana’s eyes should be, implying a tendency toward balance, wisdom, and patience. The contour of her face was a perfectly chiseled round selenite that had retained a miniature slit, where a carnelian was a placeholder for her mouth. He liked the color and stone combination so much that he decided to make Liliana a close friend. That, she did, indeed, become but not one fully immersed in his marvelous world of crystals; rather, she wore them.

In grade eight, when his hormones inflicted blood fluctuations Daniel could barely control when Liliana was close by, the relationship flared. They were vulnerable and eager to know each other, and they associated intimate body parts with known crystals. Daniel had his list, and Liliana hers, developed, of course, with the help of an expert.

“Do you really believe cave crystals could create a wrinkle in time, even when submersed in water?” Liliana asked him several days after he’d shared an article from an old issue of National Geographic focusing on the gigantic quartz crystals in Naica Cave, Chihuahua, Mexico.

“Anything is possible. Either they grew in that environment over thousands of years or there was a glitch in one of the parallel timelines, intentional or not, that manifested them in our dimension,” Daniel said, unwilling to ask what sparked the sudden interest in the sunken treasures. He looked at her with gratitude for bringing up the one subject he never tired of talking about.

“There is no active energy portal at that location, and no disappearances have been reported. Just high levels of ionized air,” Daniel said, and the discussion stopped there with Liliana caressing the quartz gifted to her by her lover.

Months later, on a summer day, between hugging and kissing, lying on a blanket on the forest patch edging the suburb, Daniel flung his heart wide open, finally deciding to share the story of his most precious possession. He pulled the quartz from his backpack, held it up in the sun, and frowned at it through the branches of light dancing on it. It broke into a series of rainbows, and Daniel felt its vibration, a language he had only recently begun to fully understand.

“Touch it,” he encouraged Liliana, his hand covering hers. “It’s magnificent!” he said, and then he blacked out.

***

Daniel awoke, still holding the quartz in both hands. He looked down to see his skin had taken on a darker cast, and his nails had grown longer and slimmer. They were done up in a light blue, resembling agate stone, one of his favorites.

He leaned against a pillow atop an unfamiliar rich headboard. Creamy silk sheets folded over a comforter depicting fractal patterns, allowing the reality of the situation to bleed through his persistent headache.

The heaviness in his chest attracted his attention where two perfectly geometric, sensual amber crystals sat. Were they a fair trade for the pair of ambers resembling Liliana’s? These were fuller and of a much brighter hue.

There was no nearby reflective surface that might have shown him more of this newfound physical reality without leaving the bed, potentially exposing more of his naked body.

One hand released the quartz and carefully lifted the edge of the blanket, bringing some light into that dark place. He brought his head closer to the gap between the blanket and the mattress.

“Gee whiz!” he hissed, sounding like air escaping a pressurized pipe. He dropped the edge of the comforter and froze the emerald between his legs that had grown larger with age, and the quality of which he was proud was gone.

Liliana!

The girl’s existence crept back into his reality. He looked to his left, hoping to find the crystal body he adored.

There laid a body, but it was not hers unless she’d also suffered as radical a transformation as his own. He saw a man sleeping on his belly, his wide back exposed and covered in fractal tattoos similar to the ones on the comforter. They pulsed lightly in synch with the man’s breath. On his bald head was a square patch with a slightly different colour, inviting a tug from inquisitive fingers. Daniel didn’t dare touch it.

He tried hard to associate any of the man’s body parts with crystals but failed.

“Not my time. Not my place,” he muttered. “Where am I?”

The man moved slightly and turned toward him, eyes closed. He wore a beard and had a crooked nose.

Slowly, in spite of his good judgement not to leave the bed naked, he inched out from under the comforter with small moves. The floor was pleasantly warm.

He took two quick steps to the floor-to-ceiling window at the side of his bed. It let in a faint luminosity. He touched it as if half-expecting it to bite off his finger. Instead, the window talked back to him with a feminine lilt: “What level of opacity would you prefer, Juliana? The usual?”

Daniel panicked upon hearing “the usual.” He couldn’t have the man awakened by whatever level of light the smart window let in, so he improvised: “Fifty percent of the usual,” he said, hoping to get a peek outside.

The glass panel at eye level changed polarization, but the view was blurry. With another whisper, he adjusted it, maintaining the dim ambient light.

He was in a skyscraper, high above the surrounding buildings. There wasn’t a single speck of green in sight other than the tiny parks and gardens lost within the forest of glass structures that stretched to the horizon.

Overcast weather brought gloominess to the scenery. The city was predominately grey, the only colours were those on the billboards integrated into several building facades. He squinted, trying to make out the ads in an attempt to place a date and time on his new and inexplicable identity.

“Upgrade to the latest 10 TB implants. Find the nearest location or book online. Our technicians will come to you.” In the ad, a woman in her twenties stared into the camera. She turned to show her profile, and a robotic arm removed a patch of skin on her bald skull. The angle changed again, showing what was resting beneath it: a microchip the size of his pinky nail. The robotic arm removed the chip with ease and replaced it with a similar chip depicting the same red and white letter S. The second chip purportedly held a higher data capacity.

They really went toward transhumanism. I wonder what’s this guy’s capacity is. Did he upgrade? he wondered.

He focused on another ad that seemed to link several floors on different buildings into a uniform structure. “Mars is open for farming,” it said. “Locusts, ants, worms. Guaranteed government subsidies and thirty-year low interest rates. One-way trip only.” The side of the billboard showed a 3-D rendering of the existing Mars habitat, its low-rise structures connected in various configurations for easy access between buildings. Departure dates flickered beneath it in large characters. “January 01, 2055. Celebrate New Year in space,” it said.

It still didn’t help to frame the time slot into which he’d found himself thrown. It was like living in one of those time-travel novels he’d devoured when younger, but it wasn’t at all fun having to do it in a body of a naked woman at the disposal of a fractally bulky man Daniel knew nothing about.

The shuffle of bed sheets rattled him. He hushed the window into full polarization, then slipped back into bed, his mind propelled to the highest processing speed possible.

“Honey, are you okay? It’s my turn to please you, now,” the man said, shifting his weight closer.

Panic shredded Daniel’s insides.

“What’s wrong, honey?” He moved closer, his shovel-like hands grabbing Daniel’s left amber and squeezing it gently. Daniel squeaked like a mouse about to die of a heart attack upon the approach of a cat.

Maybe it was intuition or the quartz coordinating his thoughts, but he placed the crystal in the man’s hands. He put his on top, screamed, “It’s magnificent!” and blacked out.

Daniel felt as stiff as a crystal rod. He couldn’t move, nor could he open his eyes. The paralysis scared him more than the tattooed man from his last jump. At least the bedroom was known territory for both of them and if he had no way to escape the man’s embrace not to mention whatever romantic activity he’d planned to continue Daniel could, at least, feign enjoyment.

Liliana had once told him that women faked pleasure during intercourse. There were benefits in that, whether in both marriage or the occasional fling. Daniel couldn’t wrap his mind around the sham behaviour, and he’d asked the girl if she ever did it with him. She’d denied it, and he’d believed her, too much in love with the angles of light playing on her selenite body to care.

He was out in the open somewhere, surrounded by trees that moved back and forth in the tender wind as it whispered through them. Daniel hoped to hear human voices approaching so he could ask for help. Skipping across timelines without notice or preparation had begun to annoy him more than being unable to associate people and things with crystals.

Was it the quartz’s frequency that initiated his adventure? How many jumps would there be before he returned home? No one would ever believe what he’d gone through except, maybe, Liliana.

Maybe.

A flicker of light penetrated the darkness. His eyes slowly adjusted as the brightness increased. “Whoa!” he said when he realized his surroundings.

***

He was in a tree way up high, towering over the entire forest. The ground was not visible, hidden as it was by leafy branches reaching out in all directions.

“Welcome home,” he heard someone’s greetings.

Daniel moved just his eyes. No other parts of his body seemed mobile.

“Elder, so glad to have you back.”

He couldn’t see the entity addressing him.

“Your soul left us, saddened, as it was, by our brothers’ destruction. We were so worried about you.”

An American dipper landed on a branch at eye level, distracting him. Its faint grey feathers and happy chirping filled him with joy. A river must be nearby, he thought, and he pricked his ears, searching for the sound of running water. How do I know what type of bird it is? How do I know it likes to dip in the water?

In front of him, the lower trees seemed to lean toward him, bowing in a way the light wind couldn’t manifest.

“You are still unsure of where you are,” the voice addressed him again.

He frowned, but he couldn’t feel his eyebrows. “Who are you?” he shot back, not expecting an answer but still defiant, regardless of his immobile and vulnerable position.

“We are you. We are the forest.” The reply came cloaked in the leaves that surrounded him like the sea.

He breathed in, and sap propelled to the tips of his fingers, tickling and refreshing them at the same time. “Where is my quartz?” he asked, dismissing the previous answer as unreliable, nothing more than a figment of his imagination.

He couldn’t bring his hands together, but he somehow knew there was no hexagonal object in either of them.

“It is buried deep under your roots. It is the crystal that gave you the energy and potency to become our Elder.”

Daniel heard an echo of confirmation reverberate through the entire forest. Branches and leaves touched, morphing their consent.

“We all get lost at one point in our growing process,” the forest’s voice assured him. “It’s the strength of the community that always brings us back.”

Daniel straightened his gaze. A mountain range tipped with a snow canopy made an utterly fantastic, powerful view. In the life where Liliana and crystals were his main focus, he’d wanted a treehouse with shelves to hold his crystals, sorted by colour and property. He couldn’t have one in the building where his family lived. He smiled at least, he thought he did; he had become a treehouse.

Elder Daniel swayed his slim body several times as if shaking off the memory of living in other universes. He was reassuringly back, his roots entrenched in the fertile soil, feeling everyone pulse, be they seedlings or mature trees. Relinquishing the Elder’s position had been a hollow proposition.

The forest needed his strength, his vantage point, and last but not least, the wisdom encrypted in the quartz beneath him.

The horizon turned scarlet. “It’s magnificent!” was the message he sent to the forest, only this time, his eyes remained glued to the defiant beauty of Spirit that everyone saw through him.

"Wien Ist Anders“

Vienna is different!

That was the slogan strategically placed on billboards, at every motorway entrance to the city. I remember it well, because they were on display shortly before I moved from Munich to Vienna almost exactly 10 years ago.

That idea made an impression on me, back then, and it is apparent also in my photography. I see and discover Vienna "differently", especially in the reflections and the blurriness that leave a lot of space for personal interpretations, dreams and imagination.

In these reflections, I find more layers of my inner self. This attitude has led me to realize that there is no such thing as an "objective" world out there!

We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are.

My kind of photography is a journey - a search for beauty wherever it may be: In everyday life, in things both small and big, new and old, It is my immersion in a tour guided by fresh and curious children's eyes

CHAKRAS Evolutionary Wheels

5. Vishuddha Chiara Corte

The color of Vishuddha is turquoise or blue, its element is ether-space. Here we are entering the realm of Ether, the element that allows the expansion of sound in space, it is connected with the moon.

The physical place where the Vishuddha chakra is located is a bottleneck, a narrow channel, it is a strategic point for the body both physically and at many other levels.

This is where a great expansion takes place as the magic of sound, the magic of breath and the magic of nourishment are performed here. In this cakra the connection between the stimuli coming from above: air, sound, thought, light, and the energies coming from below can take place: the emotions from the body and from the earth find their expression in the throat and, through the voice, they can be heard.

In the context of our healing work on our unconscious materials, already described in this series of articles, the evolutionary aspects are particularly significant.

We have explored the unconscious materials stored “in the golden underworld” below the first chakra Muladhara, they are welcomed and identified in the second chakra Svadhishthana, then they are processed and purified by the fire of Manipura, they are deeply sifted by the force of free will, they are transformed into conscious choices and lovingly cared for in the joy of Anahata, finally they are liberated here in Vishuddha.

They can be expressed, communicated with words, with songs, with shouts, with tears and laughter. In the fifth chakra every emotion has its sound that emerges from our bowels and is released in the throat, and it's a real liberation.

Expressing the sound of an emotion means having identified and recognized it. Expressing it means giving dignity of existence to what was hidden. Giving voice means creating, giving shape, giving existence to what was impossible to say before.

The cry of the child at birth is a cry of existence and a name is given to each child, the name creates. Words create. Emotions rise in the throat; thoughts reach the throat. Sound launches the expression of both into space.

Our throat is the mystical place where the word expresses the meaning of emotion through sound. Therefore, it has the ability to create, to name things, people, emotions, and to release their meaning, so that it can be communicated and understood by the world outside of us.

The intention of the mind and the love of the heart find expression in a unified field, they create a new world and allow us to go out in search of contacts, of connections.

We will therefore explore the expansive and expressive potential of the seed syllable, of the original sound, the creative sound, AUM.

The practice of AUM will be the first practice of this series. It has the function of harmonizing all thoughts, all emotions in one sound. When it is practiced long enough, it produces a sense of liberation, expansion and harmony and eventually pacifies the entire chakra system, including the head.

In the known practice of chanting the AUM mantra, I need to highlight that the sound starts from the abdomen, then takes flight in the solar plexus and in the chest and finally finds its great expansion in the throat and in the head, from the body cavities it then resonates outward reaching the rest of creation, so that everything becomes one.

I want to underline the need to practice the chanting of this mantra in a seated position, as desired, the column is straight, from the coccyx to the apex of the head to enhance the alignment of all the chakras and to allow the effective passage of the contents patiently worked on so far, so that they can continue their path all the way towards the higher parts.

In addition to sound, this practice recognizes the importance of breathing and its foundational role. Naturally and effortlessly, we find voice and breath manifesting together. This association is as natural as it is full of mystery.

The breath is the vehicle of Prana, the voice makes the breath perceptible, while chanting the mantra. Therefore, the voice, the human sound, makes Prana perceptible in the world. The human being is the vehicle of the creative force of Prana and as such, through sound, he/she creates.

In the space of the throat, through our sound, we release the emotions combined with the thoughts that were unconscious in Muladhara, and we have subsequently processed in each chakra, these contents become conscious and by expressing them we create our healed world, we give substance to our healing.

From an iconographic point of view, this path is represented in many classic images: for example, the elephant which is black in the first chakra and is white in the fifth, to symbolize the transformation that has taken place. (G. Cella Al-Chamali, The Chakras, Milan, Fabbri, 2003)

The practice I suggest at this point is:

THE GREETING AT DAWN and the pronunciation of the BIJA MANTRA OF VISHUDDHA - HAM:

From the starting position standing in TADASANA with hands joined in NAMASKARA MUDRA, inhaling, as I rise on my toes, at the same time I bring my hands from my chest to a point above my head, the gesture brings my arms straight and keeps folded hands.

With full lungs, the throat opens, and the gaze turns to the hands, at least for an instant (people suffering from neck pain are advised to avoid this step). Then the gaze returns fixed to a point on the ground in front of us and the exhale comes out controlled while the arms open to the side with the palms facing upwards. When the arms reach shoulder height, continuing to exhale, the palms turn downwards. The arms continue to descend, and the breath concludes its path. With empty lungs, the gesture continues its circularity and brings the hands back in Namaskara Mudra on the chest, and the respiratory cycle starts again.

In a later stage, when the gesture has become familiar, we will add the chanting of the Bija Mantra HAM.

We will pronounce H in the first phase of the descent of the arms, A in the second half of the descent and M in the ascent of the arms in Namaskara Mudra.

The inhalation is silent. The chanting of this Mantra associated with Vishuddha makes the whole practice very powerful with a calming effect on the central nervous system.

The sunrise greeting promotes good mood and optimism every day, as at the dawn of creation.

The VISHUDDHA chakra is very complex, the other vital function worth dwelling on is the transit of food in the early stages of digestion: swallowing, accepting, or rejecting, choosing, distinguishing good from bad, discerning, as you can understand the consequences are vast…

Furthermore, this chakra presides over the activity of the thyroid and parathyroids, therefore, it also influences the body's ability to transform matter into energy, thus its influence on the metabolism and absorption of calcium.

We will now work on this aspect through the position of SADHA SHIVA or Shiva the Saint.

From the supine position, bring the arms over the head and the hands under the head with the fingertips pointing towards the neck, the forearms above the head and the elbows at eye level.

(I strongly advise against interlacing the hands under the neck as often it is done out of habit because it would only produce harmful effects, such as compression of the cervical vertebrae and contrary to those we wanted).

From this position, with the head relaxing and held by the hands, the arms exercise a gradual and delicate traction until the chin is brought into the collarbone dimple and the gaze towards the navel.

The practice releases all unnecessary tension in the body, by letting both the neck and the throat relax, as well as observing the slow flow of the breath up to the abdomen. It is acceptable to feel any vibration of the abdomen, that shows the work of the abdominal muscle bands.

At the end, the arms bring the head back to a lying position on the ground, you will notice a pleasant reduction in the cervical hyper lordosis, greater relaxation of the neck and shoulder muscles, and the whole body will feel more relaxed.

We will conclude the work with the practice of MATSYASANA - the fish. This position is the natural counter position of the previous one

(This position, however, has strong contraindications for people suffering from disc disease and cervical hernias Therefore, it is not recommended, indeed forbidden in these cases, in which complete relaxation will be practiced instead).

From the supine position, the hands will rest on the navel and, firmly pointing the elbows on the ground, the lumbar area and shoulders will be arched, and the apex of the head will rest on the ground, reclining it backwards. We keep breathing here only for a few minutes.

These two positions, Sadha Shiva and Matsyasana complement each other and complete our work on VISHUDDHA.

We will still allow ourselves ample space-time for complete relaxation to integrate the effects of the work and enjoy its benefits.

WITNESSING PHIL MORGAN IN MEMORIAM

Antonella Vicini

I cannot remember the first time I met Phil Morgan; I think it was at a Reiki Alliance Meeting. He was running a Reiki volunteer program in Oregon, I still have the tshirt he had put for sale at the Conference. I imagine we were all on good terms, back then it was a small community, it was easy to contact many Masters during our stay even for me, a newly initiated Reiki Master*!

The first time we really met and connected was a few years later, when I went to Padova for my first session with him. By that time (I believe it was 1995) I had already read Sandra Ingerman’s book on Soul Retrieval**, I had also received a soul retrieval in Holland.

Yet nothing had prepared me for the magnificent and tactile, as well as powerful experience of meeting the spirits who came to my aid, and the lost parts of my soul who returned through the dedicated and totally committed offer that Phil made of his energy and body, as an apparently tireless traveler across time and space.

With this article I want to honor my dear friend and beloved “big brother” Phil Morgan, who has gone to the other side to rest, until the time comes for him to return and grace the Earth with his great wisdom and knowledge.

I have been a Reiki practitioner since 1986 and Master since 1991, simultaneously (since 1989) I have had the great gift of having a Native American Teacher as a guide into the discovery of the shamanic path.

Phil followed a similar path: Reiki as a foundation for life, the practice of shamanism as a way to honor life and support people in their growth and development.

The effect of that session with Phil were tangible in my daily life: I felt free for the first time in my life and treasured all the information received. I continued my path of sacred dances, but I never lost touch with Phil.

One day, I was asked to organize his sessions of soul retrieval, so I did with great joy, both in my little town and in Rome, later in Caserta as well.

We enjoyed each other’s company: I became aware of the enormous amount of energy needed for every session, because I was in the room with him to translate his words into Italian. I could feel the depth and distance he travelled on behalf of the people who had come to see him. The entire room was dizzyingly full of the energy required for such a compassionate task.

The best part was chatting and laughing at the end of the day, as a release after many hours of incredibly intense expanded awareness.

For those who don’t know soul retrieval: it is an ancient and widespread technique used by shamanic practitioners the world over, it is used to bring back to the person’s awareness the parts that might have been forgotten, frozen, lost or stolen during our lifetime. It is a sacred ceremony that requires a high level of energy, humility, compassion and a sincere desire to serve.

Phil had all these traits and a great sense of humor as well!

I learnt a lot from him just by listening to him and observing his work. I was very respectful because, by then, I recognized he was masterful at soul retrieval and the spirit world loved him. I treated him in the same way I did with my Native Teacher.

In 2007, after almost 20 years of dances and ceremonies in America, Europe and Australia, I was ready to fulfill the role assigned to me by my teacher: I organized and chiefed the Sun Moon Dance in Italy. I asked Phil to come and drum with us for this ceremony, I was sure he would fit in perfectly with all the other drummers. I was deeply honored that he accepted my invitation and brought his knowledge, his power, and his deep wisdom: the drumming was powerful indeed!

That was one more piece of the mosaic of experiences I kept having over the years. He was for me the older brother I have never had, a solid shoulder to lean on when I was tired, a firm friend to spend time with and being as silly as could be. He was the Reiki Colleague, the Master Shaman practitioner I asked permission and received blessings from when it became clear that my path also included soul retrieval. He was most supportive and he offered to give me feedback whenever I needed it.

The last time I saw him in person was in 2017, when I went to visit him in Oregon. I was fascinated by the beautiful land, the tall trees and the grass surrounding the log cabin where he lived with his loving daughter and his son in law.

We visited places, had great meals together, but the best part was driving down to the beach, listening to Phil’s drumming to the Pacific Ocean waves and chanting with him to honor the wilderness within and without.

Those were moments of great shared joy in the silent contemplation of the universe.

Then we went back home, where I cooked him some traditional Italian meals to his constant wonder and delight! He often said: “ It’s like having an Italian restaurant at home every day”, what a compliment!

I was supposed to stay for 3 days, but instead I left after over 2 weeks of warmth and real friendship. I was sorry to leave, yet I was filled with the magic of the time spent together.

I wanted to return soon, but both work and Covid later on made it impossible to visit.

So I was happy to participate in Phil’s 80th surprise party online, it was a touching moment organized by his daughter Jeanne. And he surprised me in March 2022 with an unexpected phone call for my birthday! What a gift that was.

I deeply admired Phil’s commitment to doing sacred work, the complete selflessness in giving all he had in order to be a bridge between realities. I often wondered how he could find all the energy needed for such a task, I think one answer could be his passion and compassion for our human plight.

Every session he gave lasted 2 hours, he devoted all his attention and care to each person, with unconditional love and grace. Some days he used to do up to 4 sessions in such a deep trance state. By the end of the day he only needed food, silence and rest.

We can do spiritual work only with the support and permission from the spirit world, sometimes we must stop and listen, otherwise the messages can become very loud and clear. At a certain point Phil was stopped and could not continue his work with people, but the spirit world never left his side, as I witnessed when I visited him.

Phil was/is a beautiful knight in shining armor looking for truth and the light of knowledge, wherever that may be. I am sure he is continuing his search on the other side, accompanied by the love and blessings of the many people whose lives he touched.

Buon viaggio amico mio!

NOTES:

*Reiki If you are not familiar with Reiki and its structure, I would like to give you some information. Reiki Usui Shiki Ryoko is the lineage I follow and the teachings I receive and pass on. In this “school” there are three levels: First, Second degree and Master level. A Master, besides giving treatments to people, teaches Reiki whenever and wherever is asked to do so. For more information you can check the REIKI ALLIANCE website https://reikialliance.com/ for information about mastery and masters around the world; and the REIKI HOME website https://reikihome.org/ where you can find information about Reiki, workshops and lessons open to people from all levels of Reiki from different schools. I became a Master in 1991, so our first meeting must have been in 1992 or 1993.

** Soul Retrieval

I can suggest Sandra Ingerman’s book: Soul Retrieval, Mending the fragmented Self, Harper Collins 1993.

The soul retrieval ceremony is a traditional ancient shamanic practice of re uniting all the fragments “lost” along the way in our daily path on Earth. If you are interested in knowing more about it, you can also check: https://www.sandraingerman.com/ Sandra’s website, her books have been translated in many languages and she teaches online courses.
