Transformations are where logic gives way to fantasy and no one complains about it.

There is something incredibly strong and primordial in the transformations that we have come to call also: metamorphoses, changes, conversions, transitions. They are an integral part of life and existence almost as much as they are an integral part of literature and other artistic forms. Can anyone remain indifferent to the transformations of butterflies? To the frogs and the grasshoppers? The ladybugs? Without prior scientific foreknowledge, would you believe your eyes when you see how the butterfly breaks away from the cocoon, which just a little while ago was a caterpillar, and before that – an egg? Without school lessons in biology, would we believe those who would convince us that the elongated tadpoles that swim like fish in the shallows will grow into frogs that lazily jump among the reeds?

If we listen to the evolutionists, then the human race itself is the result of such a miraculous and no less incredible transformation spread over millions of years, for which no counterpart can be found in any work of art. Miraculous transformations have been and will be all around us and they do not belong only to the imagination of creative people.

But in literature, writers do not have the luxury of translating the changes of their characters across the bridge of hundreds or thousands of years. Nor should they interpret them with scientific predispositions. Metamorphoses in fiction happen in one way or another – through Circa’s magic or through the supernatural intervention of a dream – but they happen suddenly, like a burst of pyrotechnics on a theatrical stage, blinding and powerful and with irreversible consequences. From man to woman, from living being to object, from man to animal, from Jekyll to Hyde, from child to adult, from real person to fictional character. And all this but the other way around. Hundreds and hundreds of times literature has convinced us that the impossible can knock on our door as it knocked on Gregor Samsa in “Die Verwandlung” more than a century ago and he turned into an insect that will end up lonely and tragic. As Lucius, Orlando, Dorian Gray, Pinocchio... The ancient Greeks and Romans competed to write better metamorphoses (metamorphōsēs/ μεταμορφώσεις). Leta turns Niobe into stone, and the new men are created from the stones of Deucalion and Pyrrha. Transformations are among the most primordial ways in which human existence is designed. Transformations are where logic gives way to fantasy and no one complains about it.

The very process of creating literature represents one of the most significant transformations. When a white sheet of paper turns into a portal that leads to worlds that redefine the context that many perceive as the only possible one. Literature is a way to live the democracy of reality in all its visible and invisible aspects.

On the other hand, reading also represents a process of internal transformation in which, getting to know the stories and heroes, we connect with other people’s feelings and through them, maybe just for a moment or for eternity, we realize that we are not alone – we suddenly get to know ourselves. And maybe for just a moment or for eternity we become someone else. Or something else.

But literature is not an escape. It is the change that needs to happen.

In the year that marks the centenary of the death of Franz Kafka and in which “BookStar” celebrates its first major anniversary, we find inspiration in the works that are powerful enough to turn the impossible into the possible, to make the unimaginable reach the pages of books as very likely and even – expected. Works that transcend the societies they come from, surpassing the boundaries of national literatures. These are works that are bigger than the moment and works for which the literary world is sometimes too narrow. And these works are written by authors who live the literature.

And they are now coming to Skopje for THE METAMORPHOSIS.

“BookStar” is the first festival of European Literature in the region, organized by the publishing house “Antolog”. This event, which started in 2015 and is held every autumn, includes guest appearances by both foreign and domestic authors, the European Book Fair, conversations, promotions, discussions, film screenings, music performances and other cultural events.

The festival interprets cultural change through the prism of literature for ten years in a row. It is a socially engaged event that aims to stir the interest of the general public, offering content that helps to better understand the problems that literature and society face today.

Мирженка Чехова (1982) е една од најинтересните претставнички на современиот експериментален балетски и физички театар во Чешка, режисерка и изведувачка на перформанси, кореографка, универзитетска професорка и писателкa. Како мултидисциплинарен артист има зборувано на ТЕД-конференцијата во Прага и била програмски директор на Чешкиот центар во Њујорк. Има коосновано две театарски компании: „Спитфајр компани“ и „ТантеЛаб“ каде што работи со независни, мултидисцилпинарни артисти. Нејзиниот творечки опус опфаќа и две книжевни остварувања: „Мис АмериКа“ (2018) и „Балерини“ (2020).

Завршила балетски конзерваториум во Прага, отсек класичен балет, а следела и студии по алтернативен театар и невербален театар, здобивајќи се со две магистерски титули. Во 2012 година одбранила докторат од областа на режија на физичкиот и мимичкиот театар. Како добитник на Фулбрајтова стипендија

Miřenka Čechová is one of the most fascinating interpreters of contemporary and physical theater in the Czech Republic. She is a producer and a performer, choreographer, university professor and a writer. As a multidisciplinary artist she has been a part of the TED Conference in Prague and was a program director of the Czech Center in New York. She is the co-founder of two companies, “Spitfire Company” and “TanteLab” where she works with independent, multidisciplinary artists. Her creative literary work consists of two books: “Miss AmeriKa” (2018) and “Ballerinas” (2020).

Miřenka graduated from the Dance Conservatory in Prague, majoring in classical ballet and she also followed alternative theater and nonverbal theater studies, achieving two Master’s degrees. In 2012 she achieved a Ph.D. status in the field of physical and mime theater production. As a Fulbright scholarship recipient she spent some time in Washington, USA where she also taught physical theater. She has founded a new direction into physical theater, combining physical and theater dance. She has written and participated in more than twenty stage projects in the Czech Republic and the USA which experiment with different expressions and for her work she has been recognized with a number of awards and acknowledgements. At the moment, she lives alternately in Prague and New York. She is currently working on theater projects for children’s palliative care and writing a new book about the human body.

Both of her published literary works have served as the base for staged dance performances. “Miss AmeriKa” (2018) served as the base for a new theater performance which was later nominated for the “Thalia” award – acknowledgement given to the best theater actors in the Czech Republic. In 2022 the novel “Ballerinas” received its dramatization and a premier of a multimedia stage project which combines animation, film, live music and ballet. This project is popular in the repertoire of the “Palace Akropolis” theater in Prague. For this book, Čechová was nominated for the European Union Prize for Literature and Theater Newspaper award for publication achievement.

Baletky (Ballerinas)

This novel explores the controversies surrounding classical ballet education and practice. Based on the author’s personal experience, the story unfolds around the schooling of a young girl at a ballet conservatory in Prague in the 1990s. The independence at an early age, the challenges of the big city, the sacrifices for the desired ideal, the constant physical and mental effort, the strict and incomplete education, the daily starvation, drugs and alcohol... It turns out that the sublime ballet game has a poignant background. The publishing of this book has caused a series of debates in the ballet world in the Czech Republic and provoked contradictory reactions among the readership: some condemn it for denigrating classical ballet, while others see it as an impetus for a serious rethinking of the practice of this art.

Paola Peretti

Paola Peretti (1986) is an Italian author and professor. Inspired by her own life and diagnosis with Stargardt disease, in her first novel “The Distance Between Me and the Cherry Tree” she tells a story about a girl that was diagnosed with this rare genetic disease that causes progressive sight loss leading to complete vision loss. So far she has published two novels: “The Distance Between Me and the Cherry Tree” (2018) and “Filippo, Me and the Cherry Tree” (2022).

Paola was born and lives in Verona. She has studied literature and philosophy. She graduated with a degree in publishing and journalism in 2011 and later worked as a collaborator to a local newspaper. She also worked as an Italian professor working with immigrant children from Senegal, Nigeria, China, Romania, India, Pakistan, Brazil, Moldova and Russia.

Fifteen years ago Paola was diagnosed with Stargardt disease which to this day, does not have a cure. She decided to turn her destiny into an autobiography filled with sensitivity, courage and tenderness as an ode to life.

Despite the obstacles she is faced with, Paola wishes to continue working with children focusing on topics like disability, differences and literature.

La distanza tra me e il ciliegio (The distance between me and the cherry tree)

A tender and powerful story about childhood, courage, love and life. Nine-year-old Mafalda wears glasses with yellow frames, has a cat named Otimo Turcaret, an Amazonian friend and a best friend named Philip. But she is up against a strange challenge. She was diagnosed with Stargart’s disease, which causes gradual vision loss and eventually, leads to blindness. In her diary, she begins to write down all the things she will not be able to do – count the stars in the sky, play football with the boys, climb the cherry tree in the school yard. But soon she learns that there is another way of seeing. She measures the distance to the cherry tree with her steps… in the direction of the intoxicating smell… and starts a new list: the things she will still be able to do. In the darkness that surrounds her, Mafalda, just like the Little Prince, learns to observe the world with her heart, not with her eyes.

Kristian Novak

Kristian Novak (1979) is a Croatian writer, linguist and university professor. He is a member of the Society of Writers in Croatia and the Croatian Society for Applied Linguistics. He has published four novels so far.

He was born in Germany as a child of Croatian workers, and spent his childhood in the north of Croatia. He studied German at the faculty in Zagreb, but in addition to his studies, from 1996 to 2009, he was also a member of the Croatian national karate team, with whom he won a large number of individual and team awards at national and international competitions, including European vicechampion in karate for 2006.

In 2005, he published his debut novel “Hanged”. His second novel “Dark Mother Earth” (2013) received the “Tportal” award for the best Croatian novel of the year and was declared one of the best novels in Croatian literature in the last fifty years. In addition to literary success, Novak’s novels also became famous on the theater stage. “Dark Mother Earth” was also adapted into a play for the “Youth Theater” in Zagreb, experiencing huge success. His novel “Gypsy, but the most beautiful” is also set on the theater stages, but this time in the Croatian National Theater. For this work, he was awarded the “Gjalski” prize – a prestigious award given for the best prose work in the Republic of Croatia. In addition to the success in the theater, a script is in the works for “Gypsy, but the most beautiful”, after which a television series will be filmed.

After the publication of the novel “A case of Own Destruction”, a play was made in co-production between the Croatian National Theater from Varaždin and the Croatian National Theater “Ivan Zajc” from Rijeka. His works have seen a number of foreign editions. He lives in Zagreb with his wife and three children.

Črna mati zemla (Dark Mother Earth)

A powerful and, at times, painful story about the young and successful writer Matija, who tries to overcome a creative and a love block, a process that will lead him to painful and repressed childhood traumas. The life filled with lies and false memories suddenly takes a turn, so Matija will have to face the ghosts of the past.

Faruk Šehić (1970) is a Bosnian-Herzegovinian writer and journalist who spends his free time fishing. He is the winner of the 2013 European Union Literature Prize for the novel “Quiet Flows the Una”. Literary criticism recognizes him as the voice of the downtrodden generation of authors born in the 1970s. His books have been translated into sixteen languages and published in twenty countries.

He was born in Bihać, in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He studied veterinary medicine in Zagreb, but returned to his hometown before finishing college. He was a member of the fifth corps of the BiH Army in the period 1992-1995. He was seriously wounded once. He finished the war with the rank of lieutenant and was honored for his skills.

After the war, he devoted himself to literature. He writes poetry, prose, essays, art and literary criticism. The first published work is “Poems in the making” in which the war appears as the main motive. He transferred his experiences from the war in the collection of short stories “Under Pressure”. This work, as well as “Hit Depot” and “Transsarajevo” acquired a cult status among the readership and were published in several editions.

In 2011, he received the “Meša Selimović” award for “Quiet Flows the Una” for the best novel published on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro. For the poetry collection “My Rivers” he received the “Risto Ratković” awards for the best poetry collection in Serbia, BiH, Croatia and Montenegro for 2013/2014 and the “Annual Award” of the “Society of Writers of BiH” for 2014. He has also received the “XXXI Premio Letterario Camaiore – Francesco Belluomini (Premio Internazionale)” award for the poetry selection “Ritorno alla natura”. His latest published book is “Cinnamon Letters, Diamond Creatures”. He currently lives in Sarajevo. He writes for the daily newspaper “Liberation”.

Igor Marojević (1968) is a contemporary Serbian writer and translator, a member of the Serbian and Catalan PEN center and one of the founders of the Serbian Literary Society. He is the author of nine novels, two novellas, and four collections of short stories.

He studied Serbo-Croatian language and Yugoslav literature at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. He attended doctoral studies in World Literature at the Autonoma University in Barcelona. His prose deals with threatened minorities, i.e. individuals who are faced with an aggressive society. His works and short stories have been translated into seventeen languages.

He published the “Belgrade Penta Book”: and he is also the author of the “Ethnofiction” pentalogy of which four books have been published so far. His work “Nomads” originally written in Spanish, has a theater performance in Spain in the production of the “Barcelona Theater Institute” and in the Belgrade Drama Theater. “Remnants of the World” is the most awarded novel in Serbian literature of the 21st century.

Rumena Bužarovska (1981) is a Macedonian writer, professor, translator and activist for women’s rights. She lives and works in Skopje, where she works on literary translation from English to Macedonian (John M. Coetzee, Lewis Carroll, Truman Capote, Ian Reed, Flannery O’Connor) and teaches American literature and translation at the “Blaže Koneski” Faculty of Philology.

She is the author of four short-stories collections: “Scribbles” (207), “Wisdom Tooth” (2010), “My husband” (2014), “I’m not going anywhere” (2018), a collection of documentary prose “God, then America”, a book of short fictions “Sleep” (2017), the children’s book “What the Ladybug Saw?” (2021), as well as a study of humor in literature: “On the funny: theories of humor through the lens of the short story”. She joined a group of authors from the countries of the former Yugoslavia to create the book “Diary 2020”. Her book “My husband” gained a striking international success, receiving a number of international recognitions.

Bužarovska’s books have been translated and published in fifteen languages, and the literary works “My husband” and “I’m not going anywhere” have been staged on six theater stages in the country and abroad. The book “My Husband” is performed on four theater stages in the country and the region: “Drama Theater” in Skopje, “Yugoslav Drama Theater” in Belgrade, “Slovenian National Theater” in Ljubljana and House of Contemporary Art “Trafo”, Budapest.

In 2016 she was named one of the New Voices from Europe, a program within the platform Literary Europe Live. She has also been awarded with the Croatian regional award “Edo Budiša”. She is the co-founder of the women’s storytelling initiative PeachPritch and the podcast Radio Mileva.

Unfortunately, real-life states of permanent absurdity inspire a lot, but when you actually put them down on paper, they’re nothing special. Fiction is usually more effective, because it allows distancing and a new critical perception of reality.

God, then America

Memories, smells, freedom. Alienation, fear, stereotypes, guns. America is a synthesis. A boiling point. From her earliest childhood in Arizona and American schools, to life-changing encounters like the one with Phyllis Rose, and all the other acquaintances, even those that didn’t get to deepen.In this world where it is impossible to make longlasting friendships, which in turn creates another pain – loneliness, it is difficult for a person to remember. Let alone write deep essays, which are not only criticism or personal observation but also a timeless diary that requires the baring of the soul. And to merciless reality, just as America itself has never had mercy.

José Luís Peixoto (1974) is a Portuguese novelist, poet and playwright. So far, he has published thirteen prose books, four poetry collections, two travelogues and two children’s books. His works have been translated into more than thirty languages. He is considered one of the most talented contemporary Portuguese authors. He is the winner of many national and international awards, including the “José Saramago” award.

He was born in a small town in the Alentejo region. He studied modern languages and literature at the Nova University in Lisbon. After his studies he was a teacher in Portugal and in Cabo Verde. He published his first work in 2000. He has been writing professionally since 2001.

With the publication of the novel “Blank Gaze”, José became the youngest winner of the “José Saramago” prize, which is awarded every two years for the best novel written in Portuguese. Acclaimed as one of the best literary works of the decade, the work experienced great international success and was nominated for all the literary awards in Portugal. In 2003, he wrote the collection of short stories “Antidote” in collaboration with the Portuguese heavy-metal band “Moonspell”, which was a great success with the music audience.

He was also awarded with:

It’s difficult to find something that was not written before. Part of my way to deal with that is to use my experience as a subject.

A mother gives her child a book and tells him that she will be back soon. She never comes back. Illidio will grow up in a small town in Portugal and fall in love with beautiful Adelaide. But the couple separates. The girl leaves for France and takes with her only one book that she receives as a gift – the same one that Illidio’s mother left for him many years ago. Adelaide will marry again through the book, but her husband is more interested in politics than his wife. Illidio decides to travel in search of his ex-girlfriend, leaving behind Josue, the man who raised him.

“Book” is a chronicle of the rural exodus in which over a million Portuguese emigrants sought their fortune between 1960 and 1974.

Zdravka Evtimova

Zdravka Evtimova (1959) is a Bulgarian author and literary translator. She has published six novels and eight short story collections. Her literary work has been translated into over 10 languages, while her short stories have been published in 32 countries around the world, making her a unique exemplary from the Bakan literature . Evtimova, with her rich prose opus, is considered to be one of the focal authors in the Bulgarian contemporary prose. For her work, she was awarded several national and international prizes. She has translated over 25 novels from English, working with genres such as fantasy and fiction.

Her short story “Vasil” was awarded for the best short story at a competition organized by the BBC Radio London in 2005. That same year, her short story “It’s your turn” was one of the ten award-winning stories in the world on the topic “Utopia 2005” in Nantes, France.

In 2015, her short story “Blood from a Mole” was included in the English language textbooks for the high school syllabus in Denmark. As of 2019, the same short story was included in the literature curriculum for junior high schools in the United States of America. Her short story “Seldom” is included in the anthology Best European Fiction 2015 by Dalkey Archive Press.

She has also received:

He has a tough competition, that ensures for him to be shot in front of his home.The daughter inherits the “empire” of bars, dairies, debts, which she manages with the same fervor as the father, turning the entire town’s population into her own enslaved peasants. This is a novel about the destructive power of money, a novel about hunger and a novel about love, which, despite everything – betrayals and bribes – remains alive.

A realistic, subtly critical, and at the same time, brutally honest and comical novel, which reveals the stories of three sisters: Ljuba, Sara and Pirina. The poetics of the marginalized layers of contemporary society. The sisters live in a small village near the Bulgarian town of Pernik. Living on the edge of misery, Pirina sings, although in her songs there is no melody, no words, they heal sadness; Sarah often changes partners, and one of them even builds her a church! Ljuba reads so much that she is absent from everyday life and that makes her attractive in some illogical but interesting way. We never step into the same river twice. A novel in which the river flows not as the universe has decided, but where the characters lead it.

Jón Kalman Stefánsson

Jón Kalman Stefánsson (1963) is an Icelandic writer and translator. Through his creativity, he created a unique and magical world. As a poet and novelist, he is one of the most prominent contemporary Icelandic literary voices. So far, he has published thirteen prose works, five poetry collections and five Icelandic translations, including one work by Charles Bukowski. His books have been published in thirty countries around the world.

He spent his childhood between Reykjavík and Keplavík, but after finishing high school he stayed in the capital. He spent a good part of his youth in the western part of Iceland, trying out different professions – he worked in a slaughterhouse, in the fishing industry, was a bricklayer, and one summer he worked as a policeman at Keplavik International Airport. He enrolled in literature studies, but dropped out after five years. For some time he lived in Copenhagen, where he spent his time reading and doing manual labor. After returning to Reykjavík, he got a job in the library of the city of Mosfellsbær, near Reykjavík.

His first published work is a collection of poetry from 1988. Since 2000, Stefansson has fully devoted himself to his writing career. In 2005, he won the “Icelandic Prize for Literature”. He made his international breakthrough with the trilogy “Heaven and Hell”, for which he received a huge number of international recognitions and awards.

After great international success, three of his works were nominated for the Nordic Council’s Literary Award. In 2011 he received the “Per Olov Enquist” award at the Gothenburg Book Fair. The “Heaven and Hell” trilogy explores the depths of despair to celebrate the redemptive power of friendship. Set at the turn of the 20th century, this novel offers a reading experience that is as intense as the strength of the Icelandic landscapes.

The praise that the author receives for this work is not exaggerated: this fascinating story of Iceland and its past is a timeless odyssey, a lyrical meditation on life and death, on the heaven and hell that we carry within us.

Alessandro Baricco (1958) is an Italian novelist, screenwriter, literary and music critic, journalist, pianist, director, and essayist. He won the “Viareggio Prize” in 1993, along with numerous other awards. His works have been translated into many languages. He has written fourteen novels, three essays, and several scripts and plays.

After completing the state classical high school “Vittorio Alfieri” in Turin, he graduated in philosophy at the University of Turin, with a thesis on aesthetics, mentored by Gianni Vattimo. He inherited a passion for classical music from his parents, and his vast knowledge of the subject is the result of self-directed research. Baricco also graduated from a piano program. As a music critic, he collaborated with the newspaper “La Repubblica” and contributed to the cultural section of “La Stampa.” He was one of the first hosts of “Rai Tre Suite,” a show broadcast on the third channel of Radio Rai.

In 1994, he founded the Holden School of Contemporary Humanities in Turin, a creative writing school that covers not only literature but also drama, screenwriting, journalism, video games, novels, and short stories. The school is named after Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye.”

His first book, Land of Glass, earned him European recognition and the Prix Medicis and Campiello Prize. In 1993, he published “Ocean Sea”, one of his most popular novels, while 1996 was the year of “Silk”, which was later adapted into a film directed by François Girard, starring Keira Knightley, Michael Pitt, and Alfred Molina. This novel brought him international fame. His theatrical monologue Novecento was adapted into the film The Legend of 1900 by Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore, with Tim Roth in the lead role.

Between May and October 2006, Baricco published a series of articles in La Repubblica in which he critically expressed his views on the phenomenon of globalization, later compiled into the book “Next”.

In 2018, he published his latest four novels as a tetralogy:” Emmaus” (2009), “Mr. Gwyn” (2011), Three Times at Dawn (2012), and “The Young Bride” (2015), accompanied by a new foreword. That same year, “The Game” was released, which follows and analyzes the history of the internet. At the end of 2023, he released “Abel”, his first novel since “The Young Bride” in 2015. Baricco’s work in television, theater, and film is also extensive and significant. He has two children and is a big fan of the football club Torino.

Nadège Agullo is the CEO of Agullo Editions, a publishing house that focuses on contemporary fiction, specializing in European literature. She was born in Bordeaux and studied copyright law in her hometown. In the following years, she spent her time living between London and Paris where she was selling foreign rights for the Publishing houses “Carlton Books” and “Michel Lafon”. In 2011 she went back to Bordeaux and co-created her first publishing company “Mirobole Editions”. In 2015, she co-founded “Agullo Editions”.

Nadège Agullo was the reason behind the French launch of some of the bestselling European writers like Zygmunt Miloszewski from Poland, Yana Vagner from Russia and Jurica Pavicic from Croatia. In her career she has participated in a number of international professional literary programs in Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine and Georgia.

“Agullo Editions” is an independent publisher whose works are distributed by “Interforum”, a branch within the Editis publishing group, one of the leaders of publishing in France. “Agullo” publishes a dozen books a year and since 2021 they focus on European contemporary literature. They publish translations of works produced by countries that have less-used languages, with the focus on Eastern and Central Europe, as well as the Balkans. They boast over twenty writers from all over Europe, from countries like Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Romania and Moldova.

As Agullo Editions has not worked with Macedonian writers before, Nadège has decided to join the 2nd “Publishing Europe Fellowship” (PEF) in order to get to know Macedonian literature better and find the perfect Macedonian fit for Agullo Editions.

Tino Schlench is a lecturer, freelance journalist/blogger, Traduki collaborator and the curator of the literature program at Vienna’s ‘’Kultursommer’’– a yearly, six-week festival in the summer happening in the Austrian capital.. He was born in Prenzlau, Germany. He studied German literature and cultural studies in Leipzig, Berlin and Vienna. While studying, he was an intern at magazines and publishing houses, allowing him to start writing literary reviews. In 2018, as a research assistant in the field of contemporary history at the University of Vienna – he founded the blog “Literaturpalast” which focuses on literature from Eastern Europe. In 2020, the blog was expanded to include a podcast, which is produced in cooperation with the network Traduki (S. Fischer Foundation). Due to his knowledge in the field of Eastern European literature, Tino рegularly hosts readings and events in Austria and Germanywith local authors.

His blog “Literaturpalast” along with the blоg’s instagram account which focus on the literatures of Eastern Europe has over 12 000 followers. For the work on his blog he was awarded with the best Bookblog Award at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2021 and the Börsenblatt Young Excellence Award 2021. He started moderating various kinds of events in Austria and collaborated with a number of German-language publishers to provide expert consultancy regarding new literary voices from Eastern and Southeastern European countries. He is a jury member for two important literary prizes: Exilliteraturpreise, for authors whose first language is not German, and Preis der Hotlist for the best book by an independent publisher, awarded at the Frankfurt Book Fair. As he has met some Macedonian writers but wants to get to know the current literary scene of the country profoundly.

Giorgia Spadoni is a translator, literary scout and teacher from Italy. She holds a Master’s degree from Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in translation. Since 2022 she has been teaching a course in translation from Bulgarian into Italian within the university program.

In addition to literary translation, she is also active in film translation and interpreting for literary events and festivals. She usually translates for Georgi Gospodinov. For her work, she was awarded with the “Leonardo Pampuri” (2018) and “Polski kot” (2024) translation prize and was also a finalist for the “Peroto” literary prize (2023).

In 2023, due to her proposal the Italian publishing house “Bottega Errante Edizioni” published “Circo Bulgaria”,which became one of the three finalists of the “Peroto” literary prize for the best translation from Bulgarian into a foreign language. The work is the recipient of the “Polski kot” award in 2024 for the best translation from a Slavic language into Italian. A couple of her literary proposals to “Bottega Errante Edizioni” will be published in Italy in 2025.

“Bottega Errante Edizioni” focuses on publishing Italian translations of contemporary literature from Central, Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Тranslation of Rumena Bužarovska’s “My husband” to Italian language is published by this publishing house.

Manol Peykov graduated from the English Language High School in Plovdiv and graduated from the American University. He runs “ Janet 45”, one of the leading publishing houses in Bulgaria, founded by his mother. Since 2009, it has organized over 40 literary events with writers from all over the world.

After the beginning of the war in Ukraine in early 2022, he starts collecting donations for the Ukrainian cause through his personal Facebook profile. So far, it has collected about a million euros, as well as 750 thousand euros for those affected by the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Northern Syria that happened on February 6, 2023.

He translates poetry and is a two-time winner of the “Plovdiv” award, as well as the “Hristo G. Danov” for his translations into Bulgarian of the works of S.T. Coleridge, E.E. Cummings and Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

Peykov is one of the creators and co-owner of the audiovisual studio “Pekarnata” in Sofija, as well as the founder of the Sofija Literary Agency, the only agency in the country that is actively engaged in the promotion and sale of copyrights for Bulgarian writers on foreign markets. He was elected as a member of parliament as a representative of the coalitions Democratic Bulgaria and Change Continues – Democratic Bulgaria in four parliamentary assemblies with short mandates between 2021 and 2024.

Benjamin Langer was born in 1976 in Erlangen, Germany. He studied German studies and art history in Bamberg and Budapest. From 2005 to 2009, he worked as a lecturer at the Department of German Studies at the Faculty of Philology “Blaze Koneski” at the “University of St. Cyril and Methodius” in Skopje. He has been living in Berlin since 2009 where he works in the international office of the “Frei Universität Berlin” and translates Macedonian literature into German.

In 2018 he obtained a doctorate on the topic of Macedonian imaginations in German-language literature. Langer’s German translations that have been published in Germany collect books by Vlada Urosevic, Goce Smilevski, Petre M. Andreevski, Dejan Trajkovski and Rumena Bužarovska. Most of them attracted great interest in the German media.

In 2017, he was awarded the international award “Blaže Koneski” of the “Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts”, and in 2022, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier invited him as a special guest to the delegation accompanying him on his trip to North Macedonia and Albania. In his speech to the Macedonian assembly, Steinmeier quotes Petre M. Andreevski’s “Pirej” translated by Benjamin Langer.

He has published a selection of scientific papers and has been part of a large number of events related to literature.

Anastasija Gjurčinova (1963) is an essayist, translator, and university professor. She works as a professor of Italian literature at the Department of Italian Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje. Her fields of interest include Italian studies, comparative literature, Macedonian studies, translation studies, and transcultural studies. She has published several monographs, edited several collections, and compiled two anthologies. She translates from Italian to Macedonian. For her translation work, she has twice received the “Golden Pen” award. She is a recipient of two orders from the President of the Republic of Italy.

Biljana Tudjarovska-Kjupeva (1975, Resen). She graduated from the Department of General and Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Philology “Blazhe Koneski” at UKIM in Skopje. She continued her education with postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Philology, in the field of Literary Science, where she completed her master’s thesis on the topic “Macedonian Literature in the Context of Publishing Activities in the Republic of Macedonia (19912007).” In 2013, at the same faculty, she defended her doctoral dissertation on “Macedonian Literature in the Context of Contemporary Cultural Industries (Publishing Activities 1991-2011).”

From 2000 to 2002, Biljana Tudjarovska-Kjupeva worked as an assistant on the interdisciplinary scientific research project for the development of higher education (HESP). She has led several projects in the field of literary reception, classical and electronic publishing, as well as several international publishing projects. Since 2002, she has been working at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of North Macedonia as the Head of the Publishing Sector (Book Sector), where she developed and established the model for translating Macedonian literature into foreign languages through the Competition for Funding Translations by Foreign Publishers of Representative and Quality Works of Macedonian Literature into Foreign Languages. With her experience in the field of publishing, she is involved in numerous projects and processes in publishing in the Republic of North Macedonia. Her activities have significantly contributed to the inclusion of our country in major international publishing organizations in Europe, such as TRADUKI, the Forum of Slavic Cultures, and others.

Biljana Crvenkovska (1973) is a writer, screenwriter and translator, holding a master’s degree in philosophy. He is the editor-in-chief of the “Čudna šuma” publishing house, and the e-magazine for children of the same name (www. cudnasuma.com).

She writes mostly for children and young adults, but also prose, poetry and screenplays for TV and animated series, as well as comics. He has written several novels and illustrated novels for children. He is the author of numerous picture books and activity books, especially the picture books from the “Bibi’s World” series, as well as several poems, short stories, scientific essays and papers, theater reviews, journalistic texts and columns.

Biljana Stojanovska (1984) graduated from the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje, at the department of Macedonian literature and South Slavic literature.

In 2015, she published her first collection of poetry “Words have no meaning” published by Antolog. She is the winner of the 2017 “Todor Chalovski” literary award for the book “A flat that is falling apart” (2018, Gallikul).

Her third book, “While You Sleep”, was published in 2024 by “Čudna šuma”. Her poetry has been translated into English, German, Chinese, Serbian, Polish, Slovenian, and has been featured in several Macedonian literature magazines and anthologies.

Boban Zdravkovski Andreevski (1969), is a literary translator and a technical editor. he has translated several works from German, English and Russian – Franz Kafka, Tomas Mann, Carl Jung, Arthur Schopenhauer, etc. Author of numerous graphic solutions for books, literary magazines, with 25 years of experience.

He is actively working on editing books, and is dedicated to the aesthetic design in every stage of literary publishing – from technical editing of the book block, all the way to visual creation in the promotional part of the publishing activity.

Vasko Markovski (1973) is a tour guide, a travel writer and a literary translator. He is a B. A. in Turkish language and literature with Czech language and literature. Worked as a journalist, travel writer and an editor for twenty years in fifteen media outlets (radio, print media and multimedia). In the period from 2008-2011 he was the editor-in-chief for the monthly issue of “Free time Guide – Macedonia”. He is an author of the poetry book “Corporate morning” (2013, 2024), of the monograph “Urban Legends” (Begemot, 2018, 2023), the collection of reports “Unknown Macedonia” (Begemot, 2020) and the poetry collection “Skopje Streets” (Begemot, 2022). He translates prose, children’s literature and poetry from Turkish into Macedonian. Venko Andonovski (1964) is a Macedonian novelist, short story writer, playwright, critic, and professor at the “Blaze Koneski” Faculty of Philology. To date, he has published 42 books across various genres. His notable works include Frescoes and Grotesques and Taming the Bitch (short stories); Alphabet for the Disobedient, The Navel of the World, The Witch, The Mathematician’s Daughter, and The Navel the of Light (novels); Rebellion in the Retirement Home, The Slavic Ark, Candide in Wonderland, The Genetics of Dogs, Lead on a Pillow, and The Fall of Masada (plays); There Is One for Everyone and The Master of the Cuckoo (comedies). His works have been translated into 15 languages. His prose, in Macedonian alone, has been printed in over 70,000 copies. Around 150,000 viewers have seen his plays, some of which have been performed for years, with nearly 100 showings. He is also the author of a dozen books on criticism, essays, and literary and cultural theory. Andonovski has received all major Macedonian awards for prose, drama, and criticism, as well as several international recognitions (from the first, the “Balkanika,” to the latest, the Tolstoy Literary Prize “Yasnaya Polyana”). Vladimir Jankovski (1977) is a writer and a translator. He is a graduate on the Department of General and Comparative Literature at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski in Skopje. He worked as an editor in several publishing houses. For the novel “Hidden Desires, Restless Journeys” he won the “Novel of the Year” Award and was the Macedonian candidate for the European Prize for Literature, and for “Invisible Loves” he won the “Racinovo Priznanie” Award. He actively works on literary translations. In Macedonian he translated books from Dubravka Ugrešić, Miljenko Jergović, Margaret Atwood, Philip K. Dick, Miloš Crnjanski, Yanis Yonevs, Slobodan Šnajder, Damir Karakaš, Muharem Bazdulj, Goran Tribuson, Robert Perišić, Svetlana Slapšak, Charles Bukowski and others.

Vladimir Martinovski (1974) is a poet, storyteller, essayist, theoretician, literary translator and the Dean of the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski”. He works as a full-time professor in the subject of Comparative Poetics at the Department of General and Comparative Literature. He received his doctorate at the University of Paris III – New Sorbonne. He is the author of numerous literary-theoretical studies, books of poetry, haibuns, books of short stories, as well as two poetry collections for children. His poetry has been published in twenty languages. He is the winner of several literary awards, including: “Nova Makedonija” (2009), “Miladinovci Brothers” (2010), “Dimitar Mitrev” (2013) etc.

Dragica Stamenkovikj is a psychologist, a M. A. in clinical and advisory psychology and a psychotherapist. She has her private practice in which she works both with families and individually. Her expertise consists of more psychotherapeutic modalities which allows her to create a working access which is integrative and creative. Duško Krstevski (1981) is a poet, translator and literary reviewer. He graduated from the Department of Macedonian Literature and South Slavic Literatures at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski”, where he is currently a master’s student in Macedonian literature. He is represented in several anthologies of Macedonian young poetry. He translates from Bulgarian, both for the domestic cultural scene and within the international project “Across Europe”. He currently works as a professor of Macedonian language and literature at International Schools NOVA in Skopje. He is the author of the book “Alchemy of the 21st century” and numerous essays published in periodicals.

Gjoko Zdraveski is born in 1985 in Skopje. He graduated and got his mastеr’s degree at the Department of Macedonian Literature and South Slavic Literatures at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” – Skopje. He worked as a lecturer in Macedonian language at the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš, Serbia, as an editor at the publishing houses “Begemot” and “Templum”, as a librarian at the Department of Macedonian Language and South Slavic Languages at the Faculty of Philology in Skopje, and as an editor he also collaborated with internet portals “Reper”, “Blesok” and “Okno”. From June 2014 to June 2018, together with Ana Golejška, he organized the literary festival “Astal Projections” in “Menada”. He published four books of poetry, all in the “Ognovi” edition of the publishing house “Antolog”. His poetry has been published in ten European languages. Since 2015, he has been part of the European poetry platform “Versopolis”. In 2019, the publishing house “Begemot” published the book of short stories “Sections Reality”. So far, he has translated a dozen books from Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian into Macedonian language. Today he works as a Macedonian language lecturer at INALCO in Paris.

Elisaveta Popovska is a full professor of French and Francophone literary and cultures at the Department of Romanian Languages and Literatures at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje. She received her doctorate at the “Saints Cyril and Methodius” University on a topic in the field of French literature and earned the title of doctor of philological sciences. She has been working at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” since 1994. As an invited professor, she teaches at the Faculty of Pedagogy at the University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Bitola (2006-2009) and at the Department of French Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Nis, Serbia (2015-2017). She is the author of a significant number of scientific and professional papers published in the country and abroad, in important international journals in the United States of America, France, Belgium, Romania, Serbia. She translates from French into Macedonian articles and works in the field of humanities, as well as artistic literature – poetry renditions and translations of novels. She received the “Božidar Nastev” award twice for the best translation of the year.

Ekaterina Babamova was born in Skopje on November 24, 1948. After completing primary and secondary education, he graduated from the Department of English Language and Literature with Russian Language at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” – Skopje. After graduation, she was employed as an English teacher at the elementary school. “11 October”, where she implements experimental teaching from the first to the eighth grade using the direct method. The top results of the experimental teaching allowed her to be selected as an Independent Pedagogical Advisor for the teaching of foreign languages at the then Institute for the Advancement of Education. In 1980 and 1981, as a winner of a Fulbright scholarship, she stayed at Southern Illinois University in the USA, where she obtained a Master’s degree in the field of applied linguistics. After the nostrification of the master’s degree, she was employed as an assistant at the Department of English Language and Literature at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje. After defending her doctoral dissertation (1993), she was elected as an assistant professor, then as an associate professor, and therefore as a full professor at the same Department. She was also active in the field of translation: simultaneous, consecutive, professional and literary. During several decades of experience in the field of literary translation, she collaborated most closely with Graham and Margaret (Peggy) Reed, with whom she produced several joint works.

Žarko Kujundjiski (1980) is a writer and publisher. He graduated in 2003, and later received his masters degree at the Department of General and Comparative Literature in Skopje. He was a columnist in several daily newspapers, editor of the electronic magazine “Reper” (www.reper.net.mk), founder of the first festival for European Literature “BookStar”, copywriter in a marketing agency, as well as press coordinator of the Film Festival “Manaki Brothers”. He is the owner of the publishing house “Antolog” from Skopje. He is the author of 13 books. His short story “When the glasses are lost” is part of the renowned anthology The Best European Fiction 2013. “Spectator” is the first debut novel in contemporary Macedonian literature with eight editions and has so far been published in Polish and in English. “America” is published in Italian. The novel “Sphinx of Fury” was the Macedonian representative for the “Balkanika” award for 2021. He is a member of the Writers Association of Macedonia and the Macedonian PEN-center.

Živko Grozdanoski (1986) is a Macedonian writer and current president of the Writers’ Association of Macedonia. He is the author of several collections of short stories, novels, children’s books and poetry. In 2020, under the logo of “Bulevar Sloboda”, he published the trilingual (in Macedonian, Greek and English) thematic anthology “If I were you”, which is composed of poetic and prose works by the thirteen authors of “reviews” represented in “50 short stories”. Zorica Nikolovska works as a full-time professor at the Department of German Language and Literature and at the Department of Translation and Interpretation at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje. She began her education in Germany, and then in Skopje and Belgrade. In 2004 she received her doctorate at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” Skopje. Irena Jurčeva was born in 1982 in Belgrade. She graduated from the Faculty of Philology in Skopje, at the Department of Translation and Interpretation. In 2017, she defended her master’s thesis on the topic “Cultural translation of The Silmarillion” by J. R. R. Tolkien as a challenge for the translator”. So far, he has published two books of poetry, “Secrecy” (2017, Metanoja) and “Our unquenchable fire” (2022, Sovremenost) and two collections of short stories, “Dissolved World” (2021, Templum) and “White is the scariest color” (2019, Templum) for which she received the award for the best debut prose manuscript “Novite!” She has been a guest at several poetry festivals, readings and slam competitions. Her poetry has been published in several literary magazines. She organized several creative writing workshops. She worked as a teacher of English and French in several schools and language centers in Skopje. She has translated more than fifteen books for three publishing houses in Macedonia. She is actively translating literature from the English language.

Iskra Dimkovska was born in 1982 in Skopje. In 2006, he graduated from the “Blaže Koneski” Faculty of Philology, acquiring the title of philologist in Italian language and literature and German language and literature. In the past years, she has been the editor of the “Skaznuvalka” publishing house. From Italian to Macedonian she translated “The Moon and the Fires” by Cesare Pavese (Antolog, 2014), “Woman” by Sibilla Alleramo, (Sigmapress, 2015), “All are good” by Paolo Sorrentino (Antolog, 2021), “Enough” to end the day” by Antonella Latanzi (Sigmapress, 2022), “The distance between me and the cherry tree” (Antolog, 2024). She loves ice cream, riding her bike and reading bedtime stories to Iva and Lea.

Jana Mihajlovska (1981) is a librarian and president of the Association of Macedonia. In 2004, she graduated from the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje at the Department of Macedonian Language and South Slavic Languages. In 2017, she defended her doctoral dissertation. For several years she worked in kindergartens and in private foreign language schools as an English teacher. From 2012 to 2014, she worked at the Ministry of Culture, and since 2014 she has been a regular employee at the National and University Library “St. Clement of Ohrid” – Skopje. In addition to translations of novels from English, he has also participated in numerous projects at the governmental level. He still cooperates with several publishing houses from Macedonia, but also with foreign organizations in the country and abroad.

Marjan Georgievski is an actor that graduated at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts. He has a master’s degree in theater direction. He is currently attending the Faculty of Psychology at the “Slavic University”. He is a writer, screenwriter, digital creator. Nikola Madjirov (1973, Strumica) is a poet, essayist, translator. His poetry has been translated into over forty languages. For the poetry from the book “Relocated Stone” he received the “Hubert Burda” international poetry award, as well as the “Miladinov Brothers” award at the Struga poetry evenings. Among other awards are “Studentski zbor” for a debut book of Macedonia (1999), the “Aco Karamanov” award (1999), the “Xu Zhimo Silver Leaf” award for European poetry at King’s College in Cambridge (2016), the main award of the International poetry festival “Orpheus” in Plovdiv (2019), as well as the Beijing Prize of the Art Independent Network in China for Contemporary Poetry (2021). He is the recipient of several international literary scholarships. Based on Nikola Madjirov’s lyrics, music was composed by Bjork and Lou Reed’s collaborator, the American jazz composer Oliver Lake, the Italian classical music composer Angelo Inglese, the Macedonian jazz pianist Gordan Spasovski, as well as the leader of the American jazz band Snarky Puppy, Michael League, along with jazz singer and multi-instrumentalist Becca Stevens. Nikola Madjirov is an editor at Stremež and editor of several reviews of Macedonian contemporary poetry published in foreign magazines. He was a member of the jury for the 2023 Griffin Poetry Prize, the largest international prize for a book of poetry published or translated into English, which is awarded in Toronto. He has translated Louise Glück, Yehuda Amichai, Georgi Gospodinov, Slavenka Drakulić, Aleksandar Ristović and other authors. He lives in Strumica.

Olivera Kjorveziroska (1965) was born in Kumanovo. She completed elementary and high school in her hometown, and the Faculty of Philology in Skopje, where she lives and works as an editor. She is the author of poetry books, the children’s novels, picture book, novels, short stories for adults and books of criticism and essays.

She is represented in about twenty anthologies of the contemporary Macedonian short story, published at home and abroad. Her short stories have been translated into English, French, Hungarian, Albanian, Czech, Serbian, Bulgarian, Slovenian, Polish, Russian, German and Greek. She is a multiple winner of important awards for short stories in Macedonia, and for “Twinned Stories” in 2003. She has received the prize for the best prose of the Society of Writers of Macedonia “Stale Popov”. He is a member of the WAM and the Macedonian PEN-center.

Pepi Stamkov (1999) was born in Skopje, although most of his life he lived in Gevgelija, where he attended elementary and high school. He graduated in 2023 at the Department of Macedonian Literature and Culture at the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje. He is an author of poetry, essays and literary criticism. His poetry is published in the poetry collections “Metric Caravan”, in the electronic journals “Reper” and “Elementi”, as well as in the oldest macedonian literary magazine “Sovremenost” (where, in addition to poems, he published several essays). He is the co-organizer of the second edition of the “Coronials” festival in 2022. He is the winner of the “Blaze Koneski” award for an essay on а topic, as well as the “Antev Zlatnik” award for the poetry collection “Collected Remnants of the World” in 2024. Snežana Stojčevska received a degree of Pedagogy from the Faculty of Philosophy, University St. Cyril and Methodius, Skopje. She is an author of six poetry books: “Empty space”(2022), Sovremenost; “I will cover myself with poems“ (2019), MI-AN; “It should be easy” (2017), Antolog; “Blue fantasies” (2015), Templum; “Sub Zero” (2013), awarded with “Beli Mugri” – honors for best poetry book from a young author, House of Culture “Kočo Racin” Skopje; “Sugar on the floor” (2012), Ili – Ili. Her poetry is published in numerous anthologies of contemporary Macedonian literature. Since the beginning of 2018, she is executive editor of the magazine for literature, culture and art “Sovremenost”. In 2018 she became a part of Versopolis, a European platform for poets and poetry festivals. In 2019, she organized and edited the publishing of the “Art panorama – Touch”, published by Art Equilibrium Gevgelija. She is a member of the Association of Writers of Macedonia. From April of 2022, she is assigned the position of director of the City Library “Brakja Miladinovci” – Skopje.

Sonja Stojmenska-Elzeser (1963) is a scientific adviser and professor at the Institute for Macedonian literature, part of the University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” in Skopje. Her research interests are: comparative literature, cultural studies, cultural geography, Slavic studies and Macedonian studies. She is a member of the Writer’s Association of Macedonia and the Macedonian PEN center.

She published several books of essays and literary critics: “Pulsating Philology” (1997), “Gamescribing:Essays for literary madness” (2004), “Comparative Slavic Studies” (2005), “Equilibrium” (2009), “With Dedication” (2013), “(Un)common curiosities” (2018), “Literary Binocular” (2022) and was the editor for many scientific compilations and other publications. She is one of the founders and editor-in-chief of the literary revue for comparative literature and cultural research Context. She is awarded with the prize “Dimitar Mitrev” in 2022. She translated from the Czech language.

Tijana Milikj (1997) is a cultural worker with a great love for writing. She has a degree in Tourismology at the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Science and Mathematics in Skopje. She worked as a tourist guide, and since 2019 she has been actively involved in the organization of film, music, sports and literature events. She writes prose. She is the author of the works “The life in my skin” (2011) – Data Pesnopoj, “Just love” (2014) – Data Pesnopoj, “And in this town miracles happen” (2022) – PNV Publishing. Her short stories are part of the bilingual collection “Voices – Φωνές” (2011) published in Macedonian and Greek intended for school libraries in Lerin, Greece. She works tirelessly to strengthen the cultural sphere.

The music band Chalgiјa Sound System was created in 2008 and from the very beginning set out to study, analyze and make music part of the rich musical heritage: the Macedonian chalgia. Since then, the group has dedicatedly and thoroughly performed Chalgi songs and dances consistently and faithfully to tradition.

In 2009, the group recorded their first album. The band members decided to perform 18 songs and dances that were recorded live in the TV Alfa studio. The second album named “TIHUVAЈ” was released in June 2019, under the label of “Profundus”. One of the last projects that Chalgija Sound System took up is the project dedicated to the music of Sadilovci – the last Ohrid troubadours, the famous band of Klime Sadilo. It is this project and the approach to it that shows the maturity of the group, as well as the serious approach to the work with which they once again show the continuity of Macedonian traditional music. It is expected that this third album of the Chalgia Sound System group will be released during the next year.

Ogipsilon is a DJ and a producer from Skopje, the youngest member of the Sure Shotz crew. His DJ career began in 2017, and so far he has performed at several events and festivals in Macedonia, including D Festival, Trapslavia, April Fool’s Shake in MKC, Skopje Shake, as well as many different clubs throughout the country. His style is based on a trap sound that came out after 2012. He is constantly up to date with new trends and releases, but will often pay homage and insert older hip-hop classics into his sets. As a producer, he has released one beat-tape “A Turn For The Better” and is a producer of singles for various artists from the scene. НАСТАНИ

inspired from the book “Gozert” (“Buddy”) by Pieter Koolwijk and Linde Faas

The creative-writing workshop “Buddy” at this year’s “BookStar” will be about children’s imagination! We will describe and draw a favorite character, a friend created from fantasy, but also from possible reality.

In the book, little Tichen has an imaginary friend with whom he goes on all kinds of adventures, including white ones. His life has two realities – one in which the incredible roles of Dude reign and another, in which he is a boy who is scolded for not living in this world. A book that opens up the main questions about children’s transformativeness, the opportunity to create a new world from anything we can imagine. About vulnerable child psychology and how open we, parents, adults and people in general should be to those who are different from us. Let’s listen, let’s take a look at those little creative wijugis in the child’s mind that eventually (re)create the world.

A LITERARY STUDY ABOUT TRAUMA AND STAMINA

Conversation with Paola Peretti (Italy) and Miřenka Čechová (Czech Republic)

In literature, trauma often serves as a critical len through which to examine characters’ stamina. The author(s) present trauma as a profound force that challenges (and shakes) the characters’ psychological and emotional stability, shaping their narratives. This not only emphasizes the catharsis that follows, but sheds light on their resilience. What is the motivation to continue if the thing that meant the most to you in life suddenly disappoints you?

Miřenka Chekhova’s novel “Ballerinas” is just that: based on personal experience, it revolves around a young girl’s schooling at a ballet conservatory in Prague in the 1990s. The story is told in an unpretentious way, and its appearance caused serious debates in the ballet world in the Czech Republic and provoked contradictory reactions among the readership – from condemnations for denigrating classical ballet, to an incentive for a serious rethinking of the practice of this art. Trauma and perseverance are intricately linked, as the former often fuels the latter, while giving the characters a voice to confront and overcome their limitations. Trauma is the most common stalker of a child’s playful soul, the effect of which leaves scars in the development of the individual. Stepping into the world of nine-year-old Mafalda, author Paola Peretti presents Stargardt’s disease, which causes vision loss and blindness. Mafalda keeps a diary – in it she writes down all the things she won’t be able to do. But he learns that there is another way of seeing – he learns to see the world with his heart.

The literature provides a nuanced understanding of how trauma affects resilience, emphasizing the contact between suffering and survival, and readers gain a deeper appreciation of the indomitable spirit faced with adversity.

Conceived as a mixture of domestic and foreign energy in synergy, the reading of ten authors highlights the heterogeneity of “Bookstar” again this year. Five Macedonian and five foreign authors from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Portugal read an excerpt from their work in their native language or in another language, capturing the essence of both their works of art and the culture from which they come. Metamorphosis lives in languages, written forms and the way works are read, and a space is created for the transmission of a literary transformation.

Balkan literature deeply explores the themes of contemporary personal and collective conflicts, mirroring the complex history of the region, especially after the breakup of SFRY. Current ethnic and political struggles are central subject for many works of contemporary books. The works of Rumena Bužarovska, Faruk Šehić, Kristian Novak and Igor Marojević are synonymous with Balkan literature today. The authors address topic such as the trauma resulting from the Yugoslav wars, while also moving through the contemporary “war” between male and female narrative voices, critically examining gender dynamics in society, highlighting the ongoing struggle between traditional expectations and modern social perspectives, as well as the battles with the stereotypes. The works of these author(s) present a complex narrative that interweaves historical principles with contemporary gender debates, providing a multifaceted view of the response to EX-YU literature and the echoes of war and gender.

Literature, but from where and for where?

This year, as part of the Festival, the second convention is held between a group of representatives of important publishing houses, translators, operators and representatives of renowned cultural institutions. Together they will share experiences about the importance of literature in the region and in foreign countries and the possibilities for its dissemination.

• Would domestic authors be read beyond regional borders?

• To what extent does Macedonian literature arouse interest among foreign publishers?

• Is it a challenge to find the appropriate Macedonian writer for the foreign audience?

• What are the terms and benefits of translation subsidy programs?

• What kind of literature is the “west” interested in?

• How to cooperate on an international level?

The event aims to promote domestic literary projects and strengthen them with experiences and practices from foreign guests. Foundations will be laid for successful future collaborations through publishing an authors, promotion of the domestic literary scene, organizing festivals, visits, residencies and professional conferences.

„Драги“

најдобар книжевен превод на македонски јазик. Првото почесно издание му беше доделено на проф. д-р Драги Михајловски, писател, преведувач, есеист и професор чие име ја носи наградата. Во 2023 година беа номинирани 39 преведувачи од 17 издавачки куќи, а бројката во 2024 година е зголемена на 40 преведувачи и 43 дела во превод на македонски јазик, од 18 издавачки куќи или поединци. Опфатени беа четириесет странски автори од сите жанровски категории – романи, раскази, поезија, книги за деца, драми. Сето тоа сведочи за разгранета и опсежна преведувачка продукција, но и за многу силна конкуренција. Освен тоа се доделува и интернационална награда „Драги“, која годинава ја добива Бенјамин Лангер, универзитетски професор и преведувач, за преводот на безвременскиот роман „Пиреј“ од Петре М. Андреевски. Идејата беше поттикната од фактот дека

2024 се одбележуваат 90 години од раѓањето на авторот, како и 44 години од објавувањето

публика. Во една од рецензиите кон делото, авторот Мирко Шваниц

ANNOUNCEMENT AND PRESENTATION OF THE “DRAGI” 2024 AWARDS

• “Dragi” аward for the best translation to the Macedonian language

• International “Dragi” award for the most significant translation of a Macedonian author abroad

In 2022, the publishing house “Antolog” established the “Dragi” award for the best literary translation in the Macedonian language. The first honorary edition was awarded to Dragi Mihajlovski, PhD, writer, translator, essayist and professor whose name bears the award.

In 2023, 39 translators from 17 publishing houses were nominated, and in 2024 the number has increased to 40 translators and 43 works translated into the Macedonian language, from 18 publishing houses or individuals. Forty foreign authors from all genre categories were included – novels, short stories, poetry, children’s books, plays. All this testifies to a branched and extensive translation production, but also to a very strong competition.

Apart from that, an international award “Dragi” is awarded, which this year goes to Benjamin Langer, university professor and translator, for the translation of the timeless novel “Pirej” by Petre M. Andreevski. The idea was prompted by the fact that 2024 marks the 90th anniversary of the author’s birth, as well as 44 years since the publication of his most famous novel, which was published in a bravura translation into German by the prestigious publishing house “Gugoltz” from Berlin. The novel caused a great literary reaction among the German public. In one of the reviews of the work, the author Mirko Schwanitz noted: “Andreevski’s language is firmly rooted in the rural dialect of his native village, which ensured the novel a place in world literature. The translator Benjamin Langer managed to translate into German the idiosyncratic and austere beauty of this language so finely that it can already be considered a candidate for the Leipzig Literary Prize.

The three-member committee for awarding the award consists of Dr. Jana Mihajlovska (representative of Dragi Mihajlovski’s family), Zorica Nikolovska, PhD (representative proposed by the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski”) and Vladimir Jankovski (representative proposed by the publishing house “Antolog” ). This year’s edition of the “Dear” award was realized by the publishing house “Antolog” with the support of the Ministry of Culture and in cooperation with the Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” – Skopje. The award consists of a plaque and a “Dragi” statuette, as well as a monetary prize of 30,000 MKD.

Translation is a challenge that confronts Kafka’s voice and the subtle nuances of his language, so interpretations in this domain can significantly change the meaning and impact of his stories. Each new reading of Kafka introduces new perspectives, translation imposes variations in tone, thematic focus and pace, reflecting the perspective of the translator, shaping how readers understand the text. Such dynamics show that Kafka’s work challenges linguistic barriers, develops with each new translation, and also acquires new dimensions through different readings and interpretations, creating a multifaceted literary experience.

The spiritual migration and evolution of humanity touch at that point where individuals embark on a journey of self-discovery and transformation of the individual within himself. Such a dynamic process reflects how soul migration, in conjunction with personal and collective experience, shapes human identity and growth. This is the tone of the narration in “Edna ista reka” by Zdravka Evtimova, a prose that explores the evolutionary dynamics of the three sisters Ljuba, Sara and Pirina, revealing how their common past, which rests on the foundations of the marginalized layers of society, contributes to their personal growth. Her novel “Thursday” further delves into the theme of the impact of everyday decisions on relationships of self-awareness in a world of constant change.

The narrative tone of “Book” by José Luis Peixoto emphasizes the interplay of memory and identity in a seemingly innocent story, reflecting on how spiritual and personal migrations shape the collective history of individuals in society.

Evtimova’s focus on family ties and Peixoto’s explorations of personal and collective change highlight a shared interest in the touch of spiritual migration and human evolution at the margins of a collective.

Our words are confused rescue teams with outdated maps and birdsong instead of compasses. Confused and completely lost, and their job is to save the world, to save extinguished lives, to save you and hopefully us. But we will postpone further considerations and difficult questions and return once more to the night and the storm, find the boy and try to save him in time from sleep and death.

A comprehensive experience that penetrates most deeply into human being, providing him with a primordial journey through nature – the trilogy “Heaven and Hell” by Jón Kalman Stefánsson is proof of the lyrical quality woven into a prose work, expressly the author’s skill to combine the idiolect of a poet with a story conceived by a fiction writer. In the first book, “Heaven and Hell”, Stefansson combines metaphysical reflections with poetically inspired imagery, creating a narrative mirroring Iceland’s majestic landscapes, delving into existential themes. “The Sorrow of Angels” continues this synthesis, using poetic language to evoke the harsh reality of life, mixing the introspective depth of the epic narrative. ”The Heart of Man“ further accentuates the blend of interwoven personal stories with philosophical musings, exploring human connection and the nature of existence. Each of the novels “traps” the reader in a world of blurred genre boundaries, offering a dynamic literary journey. This procedure enhances the emotional resonance of the narrative, showing how the lyrical mark of the author stands out in his prose achievements. This proves that Stefansson has masterfully worked out the metamorphic element of the text, which arouses a series of emotions in the readers. The graphic depiction of the merciless Icelandic nature draws the author to the deepest part of man – despair to celebrate the saving power of friendship. This trilogy can be classified as an extremely personal and deeply intimate story – not because the reader is brought into the wonderful nature of Stefansson’s world, but precisely because of the everyday feelings that are dealt with – sadness, pain, hope, joy.Jón Kalman Stefánsson has that power through his writing and the most everyday events and feelings to make unique journeys on the reader’s imagination from which he will not come out the same as he was at the beginning. His work is an embrace between poetry and prose, which awakens a new being in the heart of the reader. Taking into consideration that for this edition of BookStar “The metamorphosis” is in focus, the festival board decided this year laureate of the “BookStar” award to be Jon Kalman Stefansson for his trilogy “Heaven and Hell”.

Online conversation with Alessandro Baricco (Italy), special „BookStar“ X10 award for recognized excellence in literature.

Few authors can be described with so many epithets as Alessandro Baricco, and yet have them all fully justified. Simply put, he is undoubtedly the most famous and beloved Italian writer and intellectual who became a global sensation—an author whose name resonates like that of a rock star! I remember when “Silk” first appeared in Macedonian language toward the late 1990s. It was a literary phenomenon our reading culture had never seen before. The small book, which could be read in one breath, suddenly left many breathless and sleepless. It was reread, recommended, gifted, and discussed. But it was never retold. Baricco’s books are like love and sex, like swimming and riding a bicycle—they cannot be retold; they must be experienced. In our conversations, Baricco’s “personal” translator into Macedonian, Liljana Uzunovikj, mentioned several times that “Silk” had probably seen dozens of editions, making it one of the best-selling books of all time in our modest readership. With great anticipation and high hopes, we awaited the release of his next works, such as “Lands of Glass”, “Ocean Sea”, “Novecento”, “City”, “This Story” etc. Publishers were constantly vying to be the ones to publish this Italian word-magician, making Baricco something of a record-holder in Macedonia, as a foreign author with the most different publishers. Many things changed around him, but the interest in his books didn’t wane throughout the 2000s. In fact, it wasn’t uncommon to come across photocopies of his books, already worn from reading and borrowing.

Baricco was an author read and analyzed even in academic circles, where not every writer is granted access, as well as in niche reader communities that typically only stick to specific types of literature. Such a contradiction always happens when exceptional authors are involved.

In Baricco’s works, the short chapters, sometimes just a few words long, are in secret connection with the full-page sentences, both complementing and contrasting each other beautifully. Poetic imagery cuts through historical scenes, lifting time and space into some ethereal dimensions. The unusual names of characters add extra charm to the enigmatic personalities. Repeated phrases create a rhythm like a musical composition, and this aspect is particularly important because the rhythm of his stories aligns perfectly with the human heart’s natural rhythm. Baricco’s books are magical keys to realms within us that we have been unable to unlock any other way. The atmosphere in his works is captivating, and combined with his unique philosophy, they become an ode to beauty and talent. Baricco’s lyricism is essentially an empathy for loneliness and sadness, yet always with a touch of wit, seamlessly woven into the fabric of his storytelling.

We can safely state that one of the reasons for the success of Alessandro Baricco’s books in Macedonia was the translations by Liljana Uzunovikj (1964 – 2022). Italian professors at the Faculty of Philology said that she knew the Italian language better than they did. Just as few Macedonian readers would have guessed that Baricco’s translator was Serbian on both her mother’s and father’s side, fate alone brought her to Skopje. She had the unique ability to capture and convey the nuances of the Macedonian language better than anyone else. Her translations were so delicate and subtle that they seemed as if they had been written in Macedonian. This event is dedicated to her as well!

From its beginnings, the “BookStar” festival had been in communication with the Italian author’s team to arrange his visit to Macedonia. One could easily write a book about the correspondence on this subject. And after a few years – a small miracle. We had a date for Baricco’s visit to Skopje – October 11, 2019! There are no words to describe the joy. But just a month later, we received notice that the visit had to be canceled for personal reasons. Again, words could not express the disappointment.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the correspondence resumed. It was neither fast nor easy, but on April 4, 2024, we received an email from his assistant confirming that Baricco would first visit Skopje on September 30, and then head to Belgrade on October 2, before flying to an event in Palermo on October 5. What a twist! Yet, during the summer, things changed, and the trips to the Balkans were canceled for the second time. For us, this wasn’t the end of “this story.” We couldn’t let the connection between Macedonia and Baricco end so trivially—that would be so “un-Baricco-like.”

We’re talking about an author who conquers new literary territory with every book. Although some readers later did not recognize the “new” Baricco from the Baricco of the 1990s, he remained a voice that, even when writing differently from his recognizable style, was still fresh and innovative. Baricco is an eternal metamorphosis of imagination and its boundless possibilities.

Because of all this, the festival committee decided that the first “BOOKSTAR” X10 award, given for lifetime achievement and exceptional contributions to literature every decade, would be awarded to Alessandro Baricco, one of the most significant authors of our time. The meeting with him will take place online, as our attempt to start a dialogue with an entire universe.

The conversation will be led by Vladimir Jankovski, with an introductory speech by Prof. Dr. Anastasija Gjurčinova.

Creative Workshop with Paola Peretti (Italy)

Are the most tragic and dark moments in life the ones that awaken deep, primal inspiration in people? Does something have to be radically changed, something that will interrupt the normal flow of things, for a person to devote himself to authentic creativity?

For all this, the author Paola Peretti from Italy will share her wisdom with us. As a creative who very early in his life had to face one of the biggest challenges – gradual loss of sight. In her first novel, “The distance between me and the cherry tree”, she tells the story of a girl who was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a diagnosis with a final effect of complete blindness. The real story behind this book is actually the life story of the author herself.

• How do you create a work that appeals to children and parents alike?

The people of Skopje know Vasko Markovski as a participant in countless literary events as a poet, storyteller, versatile musician, photographer, translator, journalist. But now primarily as an introducer of foreign tourists with the soul of his City. And there is no better person for the job. Because Vasko is a man who enjoys the things he does and identifies with the things he loves. And Skopje is his personal obsession. As the author of the series “Urban Legends” and as the editor-in-chief of the monthly “Free Time Guide – Macedonia” in 2010, he was awarded the award “Best Promoter of Macedonia”.

Vasko Markovski is an “urban legend” of the city he enjoys showcasing. The collaboration with “BookStar” has been ongoing since 2019.

Our goal has always been to build a responsible attitude towards the environment. Therefore, this year the “BookStar” Festival becomes the first literary festival in Macedonia that begins a very important collaboration with “Pakomak”. In order to minimize the impact of packaging waste on the environment and to enable a higher quality of life for everyone, we encourage action to raise awareness of the importance of waste selection of all types, but also active participation in the selection process.

That is, apart from the fact that special dispensers will be set up during the festival to accept paper and paper packaging that you do not need and want to recycle, we will also reward your responsibility. BOOKS WITH BRAILLE AND AUDIO BOOKS

In 2023, “BookStar” was the first literary festival in our country that offered translation of part of the events in sign language. This year we are going one step further. We have made sure that the book “The distance between me and the cherry tree” by Paola Peretti, the author who will be visiting the Festival, and who is herself facing gradual loss of sight, will be available in Braille. Behind this lies not only some kind of symbolism, but also a mission to ensure that beautiful and quality literature does not remain in the dark for any category of readers.

Since statistics show a lack of this kind of books in public institutions, copies of “The distance between me and the cherry tree” in Braille will be donated and distributed in several libraries throughout Macedonia.

Additionally, in collaboration with “Samoglas”, several audiobooks are being released these days, including “The distance between me and the cherry tree” by Paola Peretti and “Invisible” by Eloy Moreno, which addresses the topic of bullying. We hope that we will not stop here and that this will be an example from which we will all learn more.

INCLUSIVE INITIATIVE “TALKING HANDS”

There is a language that is not spoken by mouth but by hands and it helps us to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing people. They are part of our community and the goal of the “BookStar” Festival is to include them in its activities. Through this inclusive initiative and through the cooperation with “Talking hands”, some of the events will be accessible to people with partial or total hearing disabilities. Our common task is to be open to all our fellow citizens. Look for the “Talking hands” icon in the program to see which events are inclusive.

“Talking hands” is a project that is the result of long-term cooperation between the Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing – “Silence” – Karpoš and the International Foundation “Boris Trajkovski” in partnership with the “Signo” Foundation from Norway. The project has two components:

– Creating a Macedonian sign dictionary (www.znakoven.mk) (the sign dictionary was created and approved by the deaf population in Macedonia); – Providing more jobs for the deaf population in a mixed environment and their socialization (deaf and hearing people) www.ovosen.mk.

In the tenth edition of European literature “BookStar”, we delve into another task – to discover the rhythm of words. The word as a form, and thus art, is a fluid and changing phenomenon, often moving on the transitional zone between voice and song. The word contains many layers – when speaking, reading, reciting and singing, so we often forget about that metamorphosis that we witness everyday. We read it in books, we hear it in a song, it comes out of us as a greeting. Who is behind that rhythm of words that makes us play and awakens the most primal in us?

A relaxed music-research session for foreign authors and all lovers of the written word. DJ Ogipsilon, the youngest member of the already cult hip-hop collective Sure Shotz, will take care of the opening night of BookStar.

In the year when two significant anniversaries coincide – 10 years of the Festival of European Literature “BookStar” and 25 years of the publishing house “Antolog”, we are actually celebrating everything that we are: in love with books but inspired by people, born from tradition but interested in modernity, curious to learn from you but ready to do our best, immersed in the creative lake of our community but always contributing to its growth and recognition...

We decided to remember this solemn moment with the sounds of our chalgija and through the instruments and voices of the amazing “Chalgija Sound System”!

Is there a more suitable musical expression than the chalgija, in which what is most primordial for Macedonia is intertwined. Our chalgija is the wonderful creation created by the connection of the classical music of the East and Macedonian folklore. Chalgija is infectious rhythm, Chalgija is urban manner, Chalgija is soulful authenticity, Chalgija is friends and a barstool, Chalgia is celebration of life, Chalgija is joy and rapture, Chalgija is our way from the oriental and local to the western and universal and back.

The Macedonian musical folk language in symbiosis with Byzantine church singing, Turkish classical music and the folk music of all ethnicities in Macedonia created the chalgia as a portal through which we travel in time and space even in the XXI century.
