Dana Auctions’ Antique Quilt And Textile Sale Will Be May 31
By Karl Pass
Dana Balsamo of Dana Auctions
is pleased to announce the company’s Antique Quilt and Textile Auction, a simulcast event that offers bidders from around the world the opportunity to acquire some of the most historically significant quilts and textiles to come to market in recent years.
Among the auction’s 200-plus lots are four outstanding 19th-century signature quilts, also known as name-inscribed quilts or album quilts, which serve as cultural artifacts that blend artistry, genealogy, and social history.
The auction will be held Saturday, May 31, in Princeton, N.J., featuring quilts and textiles dating from the 1820s through the early 2000s, along with over 50 rare textile swatch books, including many of French origin. Each item tells a story, but it is the signature quilts that speak loudest.
“These name-inscribed quilts were the social media of the 19th century,” says Dana Balsamo, quilt appraiser, auctioneer, and owner of Dana Auctions. “They documented friendships,
migrations, and community ties. Some were made for brides, some for ministers, and others for people moving West. The names tell us who these people were and where they came from. They are stitched history.”
Signature quilts are particularly valuable to collectors, genealogists, and institutions because of the hand-inscribed names and sometimes dates or locations. Each quilt is a treasure trove of historical data and a work of art in its own right. Among expected highlights will be the 1848 Elizabeth Hooton album quilt, New Jersey and Kentucky. A true American heirloom, this magnificent quilt measures 104-by-107 inches and includes over 40 signed and inscribed blocks. Dated 1848, it was dedicated to Elizabeth Hooton, with connections to both New Jersey and Kentucky through the block makers. Its intricate appliqu é work, hand-stitching, and vivid period fabrics speak to the skill and care of the makers. Hooton was likely honored with this quilt by friends and relatives, perhaps in preparation for a move or marriage. The dual geographic connections offer a

Exciting New Installation
Recently Discovered Waltz By Frédéric Chopin On View At The Morgan
The Morgan Library & Museum recently opened an installation of works by Frédéric Chopin (1810–49) in the Rotunda of J. Pierpont Morgan’s Library, which will be open through Sept. 14. The installation features the recently discovered waltz (ca. 1830) found in the Morgan’s music collection last year, alongside other works by Chopin from the same period: an early masterpiece he wrote as a teenager in Poland, a mazurka (Polish folk dance) he conceived when he was leaving the country, and an étude he composed soon after moving to Paris. Also included is the playbill for Chopin’s first major concert in Paris in 1832, at the Salons Pleyel, and Franz Liszt’s biography of Chopin from 1852.

“Batteries Not Included” Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century
By Donald-Brian Johnson
Toys are for kids, right? Well, except those intended for “kids at heart,” like the battery-operated figures which hopped off store shelves and into customers’ shopping bags in the 1950s and ’60s. Parents took one look at the gleeful “Monkey Clanging Cymbals” or the dainty “Dog Lady Watering Flowers,” and said to themselves, “Now wouldn’t the kids get a kick out of that?”
And they did, for awhile,
at least. Battery figures required little interactivity. You turned on Mr. Monkey, watched him clang his cymbals, and then what? Back in the box he went.
The truth, as toy manufacturers quickly discovered, was that kids weren’t the ones getting a kick out of these battery wonders. It was the actual buyers (i.e., their parents) who were getting the kick, thinking how much fun it would have been to own one of these toys back when they were kids. That’s why so many of the battery ops eventually found their way to a shelf in Dad’s den. And that’s why so many of the figurine themes were a bit further afield than what authentic kids might be thinking about. (Really, how many boys and girls spent their days dreaming about owning a “Charlie Weaver Bartender” or a “Pipe Smoking Rat”)?
The earliest “battery toys,” dating from just after WWII, were essentially “mechanicals.” Friction or a wind-up
spring-driven motor provided any movement. Batterypowered components were just there to offer a little something extra, car headlights that actually lit up or a noisy police siren.
Wind-up toys ran only as long as their wind-up lasted. Then it was time for another turn of the key. Japan’s introduction of miniature battery-powered motors in the late 1940s meant that toys
could essentially run forever (or at least until their batteries wore out). Even better, battery-operated toys could be designed to perform whatever imaginative

unique opportunity to trace a 19th-century migration or family network.
An exciting lot is an 1850s Album quilt top, unfinished, but no less powerful. It is believed to have originated in Princeton, N.J. The quilt top (not quilted) contains signed blocks with calligraphic penmanship and hand-appliqu é d motifs, including florals, wreaths, and patriotic imagery. The lack of quilting makes this an excellent teaching piece for textile students, revealing the construction and layout planning of 19th-century quilts.
From the same time period, a ca. 1850 Old Italian album quilt includes hand-inscribed names from Missouri. The layout features repeated diamond star motifs, and the fabric selection includes madder browns, indigos, and double pinks, a feast of mid-19th-century fabric history. The Emerging Market Of Magic Memorabilia
Houdini Remains King Of The Hill
Potter & Potter Auctions is pleased to announce the results of a 347-lot sale held on April 26. The event had a 97-percent sell-through rate. Prices reported include the auction house’s 20-percent buyer’s premium.
This specialty sale featured a full spectrum of materials, apparatus, and ephemera celebrating the legendary and timeless magician, Harry Houdini (Hungarian/ American, born Erik Weisz, 1874-1926). The top lot was Houdini’s traveling trunk, which was estimated at $20,000-$40,000 and delivered $57,600. This theatrical trunk was manufactured in the 1910s and was used to transport the performer’s props and apparatus. It was detailed with riveted metal edges and lettered on the exterior of its lid in white with the name “Houdini” in block capitals. This is only a handful of trunks to survive the nearly 100 years since Houdini’s death.
A four-page, signed and autographed letter from Arthur Conan Doyle (18591930) regarding Houdini and his escapes sold for $18,000. This correspondence from around 1926 from the author and creator of Sherlock Holmes to an unknown recipient contained Doyle’s extensive thoughts regarding Houdini’s abilities and passing. Frank Vizetelly’s “A Desk-Book of 25,000 Words Frequently Mispronounced” sold for $15,600. It was published in New York and London by Funk & Wagnalls Company in 1917 and was the first reference book to contain Houdini’s name. This was Houdini’s personal copy; it also included the autographed bookplate of Beatrice Houdini on its front pastedown. It was inscribed and signed on the flyleaf by the master magician: “Given to me by my sister Gladys for Christmas 1918 / H Houdini.”
A pair of Houdini chain cuffs from 1915 was estimated at $3,000-$6,000 and realized $14,400.

A pair of Houdini chain cuffs from 1915 broke free at $14,400. This restraint device was patented by George Alvin Wood in 1913. These cuffs were in a wooden shadowbox display featuring a picture of Houdini and a signed COA from Henry Mueller and Sidney Radner of the Houdini Magical Hall
of Fame/Houdini-Hardeen Collection.
A Houdini-owned packing box challenge broadside realized $10,200. It was published in Swansea by the South Wales Post Newspaper Co. in 1911. This half-sheet poster described the escape from a packing box Houdini would make on stage at the Swansea Empire on May 5, 1911. It was framed and included a COA signed by Sidney Radner.

Rare Paul Revere Gold Brooch Expected To Shine
Harmon-Weiss Estate Set For May 29
A lifetime of scholarship, service, and refined collecting comes to the fore in a single-owner auction from the estates of Dr. Sandra HarmonWeiss and Dr. Richard Weiss on Thursday, May 29, at Alderfer Auction.
United by a shared passion for American history and material culture, the couple built an extraordinary collection centered on fine silver, 18th- and 19th-century antiques, and objects of personal and historical significance. Their engagement with the arts was underscored by Dr. Richard Weiss’s long tenure on the board of trustees of the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.
Among the most notable items in the collection is a gold brooch made by Paul Revere, bearing Revere’s “PR” hallmark twice on the reverse, a rare connection to the founding era of the United States and to Revere’s work
This rare 18th-century gold brooch featuring a painted portrait miniature of a gentleman under convex glass will be sold Thursday, May 29, at Alderfer Auction. The reverse is stamped twice with the “PR” maker’s mark used by Boston silversmith and patriot Paul Revere (1735–1818). The portrait was possibly done by Lawrence Sully.
beyond his famed midnight ride. The brooch joins other historically rich items in the sale, such as Continental currency from the Revolutionary era, similar to examples that
Revere helped engrave, and engraved bookplates, a lesserknown but important facet of Revere’s output.
The auction features fine jewelry from Cartier,
Boucheron, and other European makers known for their craftsmanship, along with a notable selection of Georgian “lover’s eye” miniatures and mourning jewelry. Other highlights include mourning textiles and samplers, some bearing 19th-century expressions of grief and remembrance; Westtown (Weston) School sampler; 18th-century historical creamware; a flame-stitch purse ca. 1774; and 17th-century Dutch brass tobacco boxes. A large selection of 18th and 19th American and Continental silver is also included. A Chester County Queen Anne Octorara tall chest, Connecticut Chippendale secretary desk, a Philadelphia chest of drawers, and George Turner painted roll-top Windsor chairs along with a fine selection of Persian rugs will be sold. Jim Halperin of Heritage Auctions Receives Honor Award
Is Professional Numismatists Guild’s Highest Honor
Heritage Auctions Co-Chairman Jim Halperin received the Abe Kosoff Founders Award, the Professional Numismatists Guild’s highest award at PNG’s annual membership dinner on April 23. The Kosoff Award is given annually to a PNG member-dealer who has, in the past year, “made a significant contribution to the Guild or to the numismatic fraternity in general.” The award is named after Kosoff, PNG’s founding president who spearheaded the launch of the organization and served as its first president in 1954.
“Jim’s visionary leadership has propelled Heritage to the pinnacle of the auction world, but most of his contributions have hugely benefited all areas of the collecting industry by promoting higher levels of transparency, education and integrity that makes it safer for connoisseurs to engage in areas that interest them,” stated Heritage CEO and Co-Chairman Steve Ivy. “The hundreds of world-renowned experts at Heritage that he currently inspires pale when compared to the thousands of others he has tutored, encouraged, employed, mentored, supported and influenced over his decades in numismatics.”
A PNG member for 35 years, Halperin teamed with Co-Chairman and CEO Steve Ivy formed what is now Heritage Auctions, the world’s leading auctioneer of coins, currency and several other categories. He is acknowledged as a pioneer in the standardization of coins with the creation of NCI, the Numismatic Certification Institute, the first privately owned collectibles grading service.

Pewter Collectors Club Of America (PCCA) Holds Annual Meeting
In Norwalk, Conn.
On May 2 and 3, the PCCA held its annual meeting at the Marriott Courtyard in Norwalk, Conn. After the board met to discuss the business of the club, member Rick Benson made a presentation titled “Introduction to Pewter,” which was open to the public and well attended. In the evening, after a buffet dinner, the group listened to a talk by Nancy Geary, the director of the New Canaan Museum and Historical Society, titled “New Canaan Museum and Historical Society: An Overview of Its Buildings and Collections.” Following the talk, club member Peter Uhry gave a presentation on the pewter of Charles Bently. The evening ended with a talk from club member Gamal Amer discussing the recent donation of pewter from the Melvyn and Bette Wolf collection to Historic Trappe.
On day two, the membership went to visit the collection at the New Canaan Museum and Historical Society. There the members got to see and handle the museum’s pewter collection as part of the tour. The membership also visited a collection of paintings by the Silvermine Group of Artists at the museum. The next stop was to the Gores Pavilion, a mid-century modern pool house designed by architect Landis Gores.
That evening, after a buffet dinner, was a presentation by member David Kilroy titled “Pewter in Colonial Boston 1630-1775.” This was followed by a short talk by Rick Benson about the Benson Family
Pewter Collection. The meeting ended with incoming president, Greg Aurand, moderating the membership favorite, “Show and Tell.” In this portion of the program members discuss pieces of pewter they brought to show and discuss with the group.
Sunday morning, several club members visited the Benson Family House, to view the Benson family pewter collection spanning from the 1700s into the 1800s. The visit was a treat, and the members all expressed their awe and fascination with the visit.
The membership spent two full days talking, viewing, and handling many pieces of pewter brought by the membership at the New Canaan Museum and Historical Society and at the Benson’s homestead. The time was spent viewing old American as well as European pewter.
New Canaan is a picturesque small town in Fairfield County, and the location was enjoyed by those in attendance.
The PCCA is a nonprofit organization established to encourage, develop, and foster the study, discussion, and collecting of pewter. For more information, visit www.pewtercollectorsclub.org.

On Tuesday, June 3, at 6 p.m., Historic Rock Ford will welcome the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble for “Baroque on the Piazza” at the General Edward Hand Mansion for an outdoor evening filled with the sounds of historic chamber music. The ensemble will be presenting Vivaldi’s Double Trumpet Concerto in C Major, as well as works by Handel, Telemann, Corelli, J.S. Bach and more.
The Ephrata Chamber Ensemble was started by local harpsichordist Faith Martin. After studying music of the harpsichord for several years, Faith realized that she most enjoyed using the instrument in collaboration with other musicians, which led her to organize the ensemble. Her sister, Mercy, plays the violin;
her brother, Clayton, the cello; and several friends and vocal soloists will join to bring this program of live music to Rock Ford. Guests to Historic Rock Ford may recognize Faith and Mercy from their performances during the museum’s annual Yuletide event. They have performed for the past three years.
The event opens at 6 p.m., and the music will begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be a short intermission. Seating location on the lawn in front of the piazza of the Hand Mansion is on a first-come basis. Guests should bring their own chairs (blankets are not recommended so that everyone may have a good view of the ensemble on the piazza).
General admission is $15. When reserving tickets, guests

actions came to the designer’s mind. “Piggy Cook” could merrily sprinkle seasoning on his latest entrée. “Teddy The Boxing Bear” could determinedly attack his punching bag. And the “Down The Hatch Sea Captain” could send another healthy slug... well, “down the hatch.” With some battery figures, the actions were even more ingenious: Magnetic fish helped the “Fishing Bear” reach his daily limit; “McGregor the Cigar Smoker” actually blew “smoke” from his cigar; while the “Bubble Blowing Bunny” did just that.

Although some battery ops carried domestic company names (Cragstan, Ideal, Marx), the majority were manufactured in Japan, and then made available to U.S. distributors. While many imports carried no maker mark, one of the best-known Japanese manufacturers, Masudaya Modern Toys, utilized a diamond logo, encasing the letters “M-T.” (During the spaceage ’60s, one of M-T’s most popular creations was the 15-inch “Giant Sonic Robot,” which came complete with whistling sound effects and an array of flashing lights.) The discovery of the new work was a major news event, prompting performances, recordings, and commentary worldwide. The now-famous manuscript written in Chopin’s hand was very likely composed by him, and is the first newly identified work by the Polish composer since the 1930s. The manuscript’s tiny size belies the impact of the discovery. Chopin typically used small format paper for manuscripts meant as gifts for friends and students, though the lack of his signature on this one suggests he never gave it to anyone. However, the care with which he notated dynamics, fingerings, accents, and phrase marks indicates that he intended it to be performed. The compact composition starts with several moody, dissonant measures that culminate in a loud outburst before a melody of characteristically

were very budget-friendly, retailing at $20-and-under. So why aren’t today’s store windows filled with rows of grinning Charley Weavers? Well, the move to plastic in the late 1960s meant that tin battery toys could now be manufactured even more inexpensively, resulting in greater profits at the same selling price. Plastic toys proved more reliable too, not subject to the mechanical malfunctions (and rust) which plagued metal toys. While today’s collectors are unlikely to find any battery toys at $20-and-under (any working ones, that is), prices still remain relatively friendly in the $100-$200 range (although Holy Grails

While minor imperfections, such as corroded battery terminals, can often be easily remedied, toys with non-working major functions are best left in the hands of hobbyists with plenty of skill and lots of time. That’s why it’s best to test out your favorites before purchasing. And be sure to bring along a
few batteries. As the boxes always said, “Batteries Not Included.”

Better watch out: his arms move, his head moves, and his whistle blows, as the “Police Patrolman” pursues a suspect. The lights of the “1901 Car” go on, as the auto chugs along on its merry way.
Pistols at the ready, the “Cowboys In Barrels” pop up and down from their hiding places.
Yes, he really blows balloons, here is the “Balloon Man.”
