Vast China Trade Collection, Hooked Rugs, And Paintings To Headline Strong First Sale Of 2014 For Pook & Pook, Inc.

P

ook & Pook, Inc. is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year! The first auction of the year will be held on Friday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 18. On Friday night, the sale features goods from the China Trades shipper Captain Hall Jackson Tibbits (American 1797-1872). Saturday’s sale showcases items from various collections, including Kristina “Barbara” Johnson, the David and Marilyn Levinson Art Education Initiative, Esther L. Hamme, Lucille Keemer, the estate of William Kulp, and various educational institutions. (Right) This important early New York, William & Mary gateleg table, circa 1730, was found in a barn in Wading River, N.Y. (Left) Peter Derr (Berks County, Pa., 1793-1868), wrought iron “Staff of David” gallows lamp, stamped “P. Derr 1818,” 12 inches high. This unique example by Derr was a personal milestone executed at the age of 25. It is illustrated and discussed in James Spear’s book, “The House of Derr,” plate 11.

Friday’s events begin with a reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A lecture on China Trade material will be given by William Sargeant, the former curator of Asian Arts at the Peabody Essex Museum, at 5 p.m. The lecture will tie into the auction of the material from Captain Hall Jackson Tibbits, which follows at 6 p.m. Maritime historian W.Z. Gardner characterized Captain Ti b b i t s as a true “son of the sea.” He went to sea at a young age with his father who captained a three-masted square rigger running the China Trade route from New York to Canton. At age 24, Tibbits was one of the youngest shipmasters in the China Trade. He owned and commanded several clipper ships, trading tea and silk on a trade route between America, China, and South America. This was a lucrative profession in the era from 1830-1860, but not for the faint-hearted. His favorite ship, the Southerner, was built in 1834 in the shipyards of New York. In 1852, the captain retired at age 55 to a 127-acre farm on Sands Point, Long Island. He brought with him an extensive collection of paintings, furniture, and curios from his adventures in China. After his death in 1872, the home remained in the family until 1959 when it was sold. All of his possessions were moved to a descendant’s home and barn in Wading River, N.Y., where they remained until consigned to Pook & Pook, Inc. for this sale. The highlight of the collection is a pair of monumental China Trade panoramic landscapes, the first depicting the Hongs at Canton and the second the opposing shore of the Pearl River and the island of Honam,

This Micah Williams pastel portrait is one of the many folk art pieces to be sold from the Johnson collection. Many duck and fish decoys, carvings, quilts, and other objects are also included. A sulphur inlaid miniature blanket chest, dated “1799.”

both with a plethora of Chinese ships. These paintings are the largest examples known, and exhibit extremely fine-detailed scenes under layers of old varnish. They each measure 35- by 80-inches. Other significant items from the Tibbits collection include paintings attributed to Youqua, sea chests belonging to Tibbits, ivories, porcelains, nautical instruments, silver, portraits of the Captain, as well as photographic records and book archives. One of the highlights of the Saturday session is a tremendous variety of hooked rugs, decoys, paintings, and other folk art objects from the collection of Kristina “Barbara” Johnson. In the early 1980s, Kristina assembled one of the largest groups of hooked rugs in the country. The

subject matters range from geometric and abstract patterns to animals, maritime scenes, and everything in between. Many of the rugs were exhibited at the Squibb Gallery at the Bristol-Meyers Squibb corporate office in Princeton, N.J., in 1988 and pictured in the publication that went along with the exhibit, titled “American Classics: Hooked Rugs from the Barbara Johnson Collection.” Many of the rugs were subsequently included in other exhibits and publications over the years. Also coming across the block on Saturday are Pook & Pook, Inc.’s usual array of fine art, interesting American and Continental furniture, folk art, and a myriad of accessories. Paintings include works by Ben Austrian, Walter Baum, William Mason Brown, Jacob Eichholtz, Edouard Cortes, John Folinsbee, Haisu Liu, and many others. World Coin Collectors Eagerly Await The Eric P. Newman Collection Part III, Jan. 14 To 16, At Heritage Auctions knowledge of the world and its inhabitants. “Eric P. Newman has visited more than 150 countries in his extensive travels with his wife, Evelyn,” said

Bierrenbach. “These amazing coins are a testament to his global voyages.” “While the Newman collection is very diverse, perhaps the strongest overall section consists of the German and Austrian coins,” said Bierrenbach. “There are many rare and previouslyunknown specimens that are sure to set new records.” Of the many highlights of this grouping, an extraordinary Austrian gold 14 ducats from Salzburg, struck in 1612 under Markus Sittikus Graf von Hohenems, deserves special attention. Other coins of note include a 1672 SaxeAltenburg gold 10 Ducats,

struck under Duke Friedrich Wilhelm III, as well as an artistic 1674 Emden “CityView” 2 Taler. The coins of Great Britain are also well represented in the Newman collection. Some noteworthy pieces include a superbly preserved Alfred the Great portrait Penny, a magnificent and bold Mint State Rose Ryal and an exceptional James VI gold 80Shillings “Hat Piece.” “We’ve had numerous inquiries from Russian collectors regarding some of the extremely rare gold coins in this collection,” added Bierrenbach. “Some of the highly anticipated coins are the exceedingly rare 1729 Peter II Ducat, the very desirable 1748 Elizabeth Ducat and the 1766 Catherine II 10 Roubles.” Eric P. Newman also focused on collecting Swedish coinage. A few of his

One Of A Kind John J. Snyder Jr. By Peter Seibert

This past week marked the passing of one of the true “greats” in the field of antiques, John J. Snyder Jr. While Parkinson’s disease had removed him from the collecting scene over the last few years, his five decades in researching, writing, lecturing, and studying Pennsylvania art and antiques is the stuff of legend. I first met John more than 25 years ago when we discovered a mutual passion for furniture, particularly in my case, from Harrisburg and Carlisle. John had done the first real fieldwork on the 18th- and 19th-century furniture from these regions. His knowledge was immense and I often joked that I trusted John’s guesses more than most people’s facts. Whether art, architecture or decorative arts, John possessed a dizzying knowledge that spanned centuries. He could tell you about the sparrows that Roman emperors ate in one breath and then discuss the early silver of George Jensen in the next. His knowledge, however, was not restricted simply to furniture but also covered nearly every other area of the arts. John collected copper lustre, having inherited a substantial collection from his parents. I remember taking him to a Philadelphia antiques show and he said that there were no examples that he did not already possess in his collection. That is amazing! John also was an authority on architecture and a stickler for accuracy in the restoration of buildings. I recall the debate that we had about the exterior colors for Old City Hall on Penn Square in Lancaster, Pa. We had picked an off-white and he wanted it to be white lead white as that was the original choice. I did not doubt his knowledge but only worried about what it would look like after the soot fell. Many at Adamstown, as well as Conestoga Auction,

looked forward to seeing John and his dogs arrive. He rarely sought terms on items and was willing to pull the trigger in terms of buying great stuff. Many dealers and auction houses still probably have rows of furniture that John purchased but could not bring home because of a lack of room. These mini-museums are another tribute to his remarkable taste and ability. One area that few knew about with John was his talent as an artist. John was a Harrisburg boy, as I am, and so attended John Harris High School. I recall meeting one of his former teachers who not only knew him as Jack Snyder (his father was also John) but who told me that John had created the engravings of the school for the yearbook and that they were, at least in the early 2000s, still in use by the school. When I told him that I had discovered this, he shrugged his shoulders and told me “some day it all goes.” The part that I remember best about John is how he challenged you to think about those treasured chestnuts that we all have when it comes to antiques. He asked the question, for example, as to how could anyone sit at a Chippendale fall front desk and write? And then he asked if someone did sit there and write, why do we rarely see ink stains on the fall board or on the front of the case? I remember when he asked me these questions and I realized that no one sat at Chippendale fall front desks but rather they were for storage and to show off the money and taste of the family. A simple discovery, but one that I needed to learn! I recall as well when John would speak about the rich and diverse variety of craftsmen who worked in Lancaster County during the 18th century. For years, collectors had assumed that the Bachman family of Strasburg had made

all the Lancaster furniture. While the Bachmans did make furniture, it was of the plain variety and certainly not the highly elaborate work that was ascribed to them. John was perhaps the first to look at the wide range of styles and forms and point out what the rest should have seen right away, there were many hands involved in making them and not just one small shop. It was obvious, but many had missed it, in the hope of attributing their piece to the Bachmans. Similarly, John was the one who pointed out to me that unless portraitist Jacob Eichholtz (1776-1845) had multiple personalities and talent levels, he could not have painted all the early works ascribed to him. Rather, he noted that there were many hands doing these works. This myth busting did not always make John popular among collectors. Most of us like to know exactly what we have and who made it, especially if it can be attributed to a known figure whose works are published. To suddenly have your famous “Bachman chest of drawers” described as being by that more famous artist “anonymous,” did not always sit well with people. I recall his lecture that it was impossible for the sulfurinlaid blanket chests that were made in Manheim, Lancaster County, during the 18th century to have been made by pump-maker Peter Holl, despite a marital association with one of the chests. Folks were not happy. Yet, the bottom line is that as collectors we need that dose of reality from time to time. We need to have our paper tigers set ablaze and then to use the fire to roast those old chestnuts. For John, history was about truth. One either tells it or one is not a good historian. John told the truth, often with wit and humor, and thus elevated ALL of our collections to a new high.

I think that American Empire and especially Victorian sterling are still exceptional buys. Yes, prices jumped when sterling hit highs but the quality of workmanship is superlative, and they are vastly underappreciated. If I had a dream collection to build, it would be of Empire and Victorian coin and sterling pitchers. They are showy, easy to display and fun to use. So dig out the silver, polish it up and use it. I promise that you will not regret it, and then next time that you are out, who knows what might catch your eye?

I have often been chided as being the last one of my generation to enjoy using silver for parties and formal dinners. Too often my fellow Gen X’ers want paper plates, plastic utensils, and placemats for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I recall a colleague who sincerely was puzzled when I told her that we used a tablecloth and ate off of the silver flatware. Okay, so I confess…I do love the stuff. In our informal world today, sometimes it is nice to pull out the good stuff, polish it up, to use and enjoy it. As I write this column, we are getting ready for a party at the house for friends. My daughter spent the morning polishing the silver, getting it ready for the event. Like my mother and my grandmother, she enjoys polishing silver. There is something fulfilling about using Wright’s silver

and now is the beginning of Jane’s own silver collection. I have carried that on as well, in buying silver for babies and as wedding gifts. New sterling is outrageously priced but lovely antique silver is still fairly priced once you get passed those folks who change their prices every day depending upon the price of silver. Have to say that I cannot abide those dealers, as the amount of silver they have in their pieces is usually so small that changing pricing daily in order to outfox the bullion hunters is just crazy. As for great buys in silver,

cream to clean up the silver. Alas the world is not a safe place, and we have to keep the silver locked in a secure place. It’s a pain to fetch it and deal with the cards and keys to get into it all, but I have to say that it is worth the while in the end. When I was boy, silver polishing entailed digging the tarnished silver out of the silver bags and hitting it pretty hard. Then after the party, washing it in hot water, drying it thoroughly and putting it away. Today, I scarcely have a piece of silver cloth in the house! What happened? The advent of high quality polypropylene bags have made silver cloth, in my opinion, pretty outdated. After drying the silver, I wrap it in clean cloth and slip it into the bag until I am ready for next year. You ask why I polish…. well the bag trick does not work well with trays and big bowls so there is always some elbow grease involved. Silver is something to be enjoyed and used, and I encourage collectors to enjoy it. When my youngest was born back in 1999, Peter and Nancy Schiffer gave us an exquisite sterling baby set that we used for special occasions

In the 11th century, the Chinese invented a mechanical device to measure time, and the clock was born and refined in the centuries to follow. Spirit Photography Album Tops Swann’s Dec. 12 Photographs And Photobooks Auction An album containing 27 spiritualist photographs taken during séances at Dr. Thomas Glendenning Hamilton’s psychic room in Winnipeg, Canada, circa 1920-1922, sold for an auction record of $93,750 to a private collector at Swann Galleries Photographs and Photobooks sale in New York City on Dec. 12. “Swann continues to cast a wide net in our photographs auctions, highlighting the best examples of vernacular images, social documentary prints, and contemporary masterworks. Our role as the goto house for terrific examples of special thematic objects was reflected in the stellar result for an album containing 27 spiritualist photographs (replete with psychics and materialization of ghosts), which sold for $93,750, while a California mug shot album from 1923, featuring an array of robbers, realized $22,500,” said Daile Kaplan, vice president and director of photographs and photobooks. (All prices include buyer’s premium). “As new collectors from the fields of contemporary,

outsider art, and material culture enter the photographs marketplace, the gap between classical photography and other fields narrows, and values continue to rise,” continued Kaplan. The mug shot album was taken in San Francisco, and it contained approximately 700 photographs and entries. It also went to a private collector. The sale total was $979,732. There were 274 lots offered, and 195 sold for a 71 percent sellthrough rate by lot. Other top lots included Andy Warhol’s “Self-Portrait in a Platinum Wig” and “Self-Portrait in a Platinum Pageboy Wig,” two unique Polaroid prints from 1981, selling for $33,280 to a private collector. Robert Rauschenberg’s “ R a u s c h e n b e r g Photographs” portfolio with 12 silver prints from 1979 sold for $20,000 to a collector, and Ansel Adams’ “Snow Banks, Nevada” silver print, circa 1960s, brought $8,750, also going to a collector. SHOWS & MARKETS C o r d i e r A u c t i o n s ’ B o o k , M a p , Grey Flannel Announces Auction Of Historical And Photography Auction “Little” Johnny Sylvester Collection Grey Flannel Auctions has recently announced that it has been commissioned to sell the “Little” Johnny Sylvester collection, a unique familyowned archive related to one of the most famous stories in baseball history. Sylvester was a gravely ill 11-year-old boy who rallied after receiving a baseball signed by Babe Ruth together with a promise from the Yankee slugger to “knock a homer” for him. The Internet, phone, and absentee auction featuring the Sylvester collection will open for online bidding at www.greyflannelauctions.com on Monday, Jan. 20, and will conclude on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, the day that would have been Babe Ruth’s 119th birthday. The collection’s centerpiece is the most talked-about baseball of all time, the “I’ll Knock A Homer For You” baseball that Ruth and the Yankees sent to Sylvester. Ruth and five other Yankees autographed the baseball. Ruth’s immortal promise, “I’ll Knock A Homer For You,” appears on one panel, and an inscription from the Yankees appears on another. Shortly before Oct. 6, 1926, Babe Ruth and the Yankees sent the signed and inscribed baseball to Little Johnny, who was hospitalized near his home in Essex Falls, N.J. The youngster had been

another letter to the boy, inquiring about his recovery and inviting him to Yankee Stadium for the 1927 World Series, “to help win another pennant.” Ruth wasn’t the era’s only sports celebrity to reach out to the ailing Sylvester. “Big Bill” Tilden, one of the greatest

tennis players of all time, sent Johnny three hand-written letters wishing him well, and sent the boy an autographed tennis racquet he had used in the U.S. National Championships (now known as the U.S. Open). Hall of Fame halfback “Red” Grange, a friend of Ruth’s, also sent a letter, promising to score a touchdown just for him in his first game at Yankee Stadium. In his letter, Grange invites Johnny and his father to the game, and also gifts the boy with an autographed football. Baseball Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby was another high-profile athlete who sent Little Johnny a letter. The Little Johnny Sylvester collection, which was on loan to the Babe Ruth Museum for more than 25 years, comes to Grey Flannel’s Feb. 6 auction directly from its owner, John Sylvester Jr. For additional information, call 631-288-7800 or visit www.greyflannel auctions.com. seriously injured in the summer of 1926 after falling off a horse and being accidentally kicked in the head by his mount. Learning of the incident and Sylvester’s devotion to the Yankees, the team sent Sylvester the ball from St. Louis, where they were playing the Cardinals in the 1926 World Series. Ruth promised to hit a home run for Little Johnny and, amazingly enough, he hit not one, but three homers in Game 4 of the Series. It was the first time Ruth had ever belted three in a game, and in so doing, he became first player to do so in a World Series. The young patient’s spirits were lifted, and three days later (Game 6) Ruth sent a hand-written letter stating that he would try to hit another homer for little Johnny, “maybe two.” The day after Game 7, on Oct. 11, 1926, Ruth visited Sylvester in Essex Falls. On Dec. 16, 1926, Ruth penned

The Armory Antique Show (Continued from page 10)

will host the greatest number of Americana dealers during Antiques Week. Americana dealer Michael Ogle of American Garage says, “The Armory Antique Show is the best show to attend during New York’s Antiques Week. The show hosts both an eclectic mix of antique merchandise, everything from designer and decorator pieces to Americana and folk art items, as well as nationally recognized dealers with 20-plus years’ experience dealing in the antiques industry.” Each year, antique collectors, interior designers, home decorators, antique enthusiasts, and novices from around the world have flocked to The Armory Antique Show to see the variety of featured antique items. “As the first show of the new year, The Armory Antique Show is an exciting way to celebrate the winter season,” says Bill Drucker of Drucker Antiques, a Georg Jensen silver

expert. “We’ve been in the antiques business for almost 40 years, and we’re always impressed by the crowds of antique enthusiasts and collectors that travel from all over the world to view the high quality merchandise at The Armory Antique Show. I think fluidity of the show allows it to consistently evolve and stay current to antique trends, attracting new visitors each year.” Show times are Friday, Jan. 24, and Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $15 and is valid for re-entry all three show days. Children under 16 will be admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult. The 69th Regiment Armory is located at 68 Lexington Ave., between E. 25th and 26th St. in Manhattan.
