The widely anticipated Thomas Commeraw (ca. 1771-1823) stoneware exhibit at the New York Historical Society in Manhattan recently opened and will run through May 28. Curated by Margi Hofer and Mark Shapiro, “Crafting Freedom: The Life and Legacy of Free Black Potter Thomas W. Commeraw” is the first exhibition to bring overdue attention to a skilled craftsman whose racial identity was long overlooked. Born enslaved, Commeraw rose to prominence as a free Black entrepreneur, owning and operating a successful pottery. Over a period of two decades, Commeraw amassed property, engaged in debates over state and national politics and participated in the life of New York City’s free Black community. The exhibition explores Commeraw’s multifaceted history as a craftsman, business owner, family man and citizen.

For many years, Commeraw was thought to have been a white potter of French descent, although that misinterpretation quickly changed when author Brandt Zipp, a partner at Crocker Farm in Sparks, Md., discovered in 2003 that he was actually a black man. He uncovered this information in New York City’s 1800 Federal census. Furthermore, Zipp’s 20 or so years’ worth of research revealed that Commeraw was born enslaved and probably trained in the Crolius family stoneware workshop in

Manhattan, where he was eventually freed in 1779, following the death of William Crolius.

Furthermore, this exhibit follows the publication of Zipp’s groundbreaking book that was published by Crocker Farm in the fall of 2022, titled, “Commeraw’s Stoneware: The Life and Work of the First African-American Pottery Owner.”

According to Zipp, “In 2003, a chance encounter with a census record embarked me on a quest that has more or less consumed my research life ever since. The book was designed from the beginning to be a definitive work on an

important early American craftsman, abolitionist and (ultimately) hopeful founder of an African republic, a man who slipped through the fingers of history.” I had the opportunity to see this exhibit on Jan. 28, and it certainly lived up to the hype I’ve

Collector Chats With Peter S. Seibert This Week: Getting Really Old With The Ancients

I can research the life of Antony and his legions and then dive into the specific history of the one featured on a particular coin. And, of course, as we think about collecting coins where many countries issue commemorative currency for nearly any occasion, we can realize that this was also an ancient phenomenon.

Finally, collecting ancient coins is not about spending millions of modern dollars.

One of my first collections, formed decades ago, was an ancient coin collection. Who among us has not dreamed about the ancient world and what it was like? Roman centurions, merchants from Gaul, and gladiators? What many people do not realize is that it is possible to own part of that past and it is quite legal and safe to do so.

Collecting ancient coins is truly a rewarding passion for those who love history. Start with the basic premise that every ancient coin in every collection had to have come from underground in some way. There are no ancient coins that have continuously been hidden in drawers since the year 30. So putting an ancient coin in your palm is to be holding something that had been hidden or lost, then rediscovered and then made its way to you. That is cool!

Second is that collecting ancient coins is truly a history lover’s passion-fest. Some of my favorites are a series of ancient silver coins from the time of Mark Antony that bear the number (being different on each coin in the series) of one of his trusted fighting legions. As I look at such coins,

Like modern currency, there are plenty of coins to go around with many ancients bringing only a few dollars. Yes, you can spend lots of money, and there are some beautiful coins to see. However, for less than $50, you can find a nice coin or two to start your collection.

For me, I have loved the coins of the Roman Emperor Constantine. His story is well known, and there are an incredible number of coins that survive from his time. One particular issue of coins that I like are those that were minted at the provincial mint in what is now present-day London. Pretty cool and not an expensive coin to own! Are there fakes? Of course there are. Ironically, there are even ancient fakes. The coin issues known as Urbs Roma are thought to be copies of Roman coins issued in Great Britain by local moneyers after the Romans left the island. The key is education and to remember that an ancient coin should look pretty darned ancient!

Finding ancient coins is not as challenging as it was when I was a boy before the internet. EBay, with some cautions, is a place to look for ancient coins. The key in a search is to make sure it is a

legit seller who offers some kind of guarantee. Also, I tend to shy away from overseas dealers other than those in the United Kingdom.

In the United States, there are many fine dealers, and an internet search will reveal some of them. A tip in finding quality dealers is to look at the number of catalogs (print and online) that they have produced. If there are a number of them, then you probably should consider that dealer as a good source.

So, start a new collection in 2023 that is more than a thousand years in the making.

“Born to collect” should be the motto of Peter Seibert’s family. Raised in Central Pennsylvania, Seibert has been collecting and writing about antiques for more than three decades. By day, he is a museum director and has worked in Pennsylvania, Wyoming, Virginia and New Mexico. In addition, he advises and consults with auction houses throughout the MidAtlantic region, particularly about American furniture and decorative arts. Seibert’s writings include books on photography,Americanfraternalsocieties and paintings. He and his family are restoring a 1905 arts and crafts house filled with years’ worth of antique treasures found in shops, co-ops and at auctions.

Stoneware

heard and read. In many ways, this exhibit brings Commeraw’s work to life, showcasing around 20 examples of his stoneware production from the late 1790s to the 1819 period, as well as paperwork and other artifacts. The forms include oyster jars, crocks and jugs, highlighted by a jug that was loaned from the collection of Joseph Gromacki. Crocker Farm sold this jug in 2021 for $96,000. The piece defines the type of wares that Commeraw produced in Corlear’s Hook in Manhattan and is considered to be a masterpiece of Commeraw’s production. Impressed with an elaborate drape and tassel motif and highlighted with cobalt, it’s also impressed with Commeraw’s maker’s mark, “COMMERAWS STONEWARE N. YORK CORLEARS HOOK.”

The exhibit also features Commeraw’s involvement with the local oyster trade, whereas the oyster jars he made have been recovered from archaeological sites all over, along with a jug that was found on a shipwreck off the coast of Norway. New York City as a port city during this period was an active one.

The exhibit also showcases some outstanding objects that were made by David Morgan in Manhattan, another black potter who likely had a working relationship with Commeraw, as well as various objects made by the Crolius family, including actual tools used for decorating stoneware such as stamps. These objects include a spouted stoneware pitcher from the Elie Nadelman (18821946) collection at the New York Historical Society that was made by Clarkson Crolius Sr. (1773-1843) in 1798. This is the only object known to exist today that bears Clarkson’s signature. The pitcher is profusely decorated with incised and punch flowers and vines.

Overall, though, this is a landmark exhibit that tells the story of one of the most important potters in American history. Commeraw’s story is inspirational, but his life was by no means easy. Whether you have an interest in historical American utilitarian pottery or not, this is an exhibit that tells the story of a pioneer black American and first African-American pottery owner in the country, along

with the hardships and successes that came with it. For those reasons, it is a wonderful exhibit and testament to the life of Thomas W. Commeraw.

This is considered to be the masterpiece of Commeraw’s known work today. The new Thomas Commeraw exhibit at the New York Historical Society in Manhattan is titled “The Life and Legacy of Free Black Potter Thomas W. Commeraw.” This is a large, straight-sided stoneware jar made by Thomas Commeraw in Manhattan. Here are stoneware oyster jars made by Thomas Commeraw in Manhattan. They were loaned by Long Island, N.Y., researcher Chris Pickerell. This stoneware jar has open handles and finely incised and deep cobalt decoration.

Multiple Records Set As Heritage’s Winter Sports Card Auction Races Past $10

Million

1952 Topps Cards Signed By Mickey Mantle And Jackie Robinson Excel

A Murderers’ Row of vintage cardboard, led by Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, pushed Heritage Auctions’ latest Winter Sports Card Catalog Auction past the $10.1 million mark over the two days of Jan. 26 and 27. But

the legendary sluggers weren’t alone atop the hits list, as more than 2,300 bidders

worldwide also staked their claims to some coveted football, basketball and hockey cards. Among the notable offerings from the nearly soldout auction was a vending box of first-series 1959 Topps football cards that trampled preauction expectations, and what’s now the world’s most valuable 1968 Joe Namath card.

“Numerous records were once again achieved during the event, and it’s always a thrill to see which ones become collectors’ latest favorites,” said Chris Ivy, Heritage’s director of sports

auctions. “Some you know will top the list, like the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle, especially one of the very few signed by The Mick. Others, like that vending box of football cards or the PSA Gem Mint 10 1973 Roberto Clemente that became the first to crack six figures, remind us why we do this, because it’s just so much fun.”

Speaking of, alongside a 1952 Topps Mantle graded Near Mint-Mint 8 by SGC, which sold for $600,000, this auction also featured one of fewer than 10 ’52 Mantles autographed by The

baseball’s color barrier-breaker. The PSA counts more than 1,300 unsigned Robinsons from this year in its population report, but the Brooklyn Dodgers’ infielder signed only six. And of those, only one is graded higher than the PSA Very Good+ 3.5 that realized $216,000 in this auction.

That was only slightly less than the $228,000 one collector paid for the 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card graded PSA Near Mint-Mint 8. The card’s scarcity is likewise unparalleled, as only nine unqualified examples have been graded higher.

It was only a matter of time before another of baseball’s great rarities broke the $100,000 mark, the 1973

Topps Roberto Clemente graded PSA Gem Mint 10. The card itself isn’t particularly hard to find, after all, there are 6,300 in PSA’s population report. But only seven have been awarded that Perfect 10. One of the Lucky Seven sold in 2021 for $38,425.20. Less than two years later, this one sold for $105,000 to shatter that previous highwater mark.

Another Clemente likewise toppled its previous record, when a 1971 Topps card featuring the late, great Pittsburgh Pirate graded PSA Mint 9 realized $66,000, which was $49,200 more than it sold for in July 2018.

That signed 1952 Mantle wasn’t the only Mantle cardboard to surpass expectations; a 1958 Topps Mickey Mantle All Star card graded

PREVIEW:

PSA Mint 9 sold during the two-day affair for $63,000. That price shouldn’t surprise, as there are no examples of that card that have ever graded higher.

That brings us to one of only four known 1968 Topps Joe Namath cards graded PSA Gem Mint 10. In the past, this was a card that used to sell for a few hundred dollars in mint and near-mint condition. But collectors tussled over this prized rarity, driving Broadway Joe’s final price to $46,800.

Only his 1965 rookie cards and the only PSA Gem Mint 10 Namath from the ’70 set have ever sold for more at auction.

Another standout from this auction was the 1959 Topps Football (First Series) vending box filled with cards tightly bound with brown strips of paper. Heritage had never before offered this extraordinary rarity, which meant there was nothing to compare it to; hence, the $8,000 pre-auction estimate. Significant interest in this

auction first-timer drove the bidding into six-figure territory, enough to generate media interest and a final price of $117,000.

Hockey cards, too, scored high on the six-figure list in this event, with a 1979 O-PeeChee Wayne Gretzky rookie card graded PSA Mint 9 realizing $156,000. Always a great one from The Great One. For more information and results from the Winter Sports Card Catalog Auction, visit www.HA.com.
