Celebrate the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County’s 150 years of community impact at its anniversary gala on Thursday, November 14, 2024, from 6 to 10 p.m., at the historic Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury.

college readiness, therapeutic counseling, swim lessons, wellness, and ensuring access for all.

SAYRE WOODS SOUTH’S STORYBOOK SEASON

I always wondered how writers create those storybook endings in movies, where an unlikely team comes from behind to win it all.

Now I know—I’ve lived it. The SWS 12U All-Star team began the NNJ State Tournament with a loss, a moment that could have led them to doubt themselves. Instead, they rallied, winning four consecutive games, including a thrilling 11-inning semifinal victory and a strong performance in the State Championship. This alone makes for a remarkable season, but what truly elevates this experience is the incredible support from our

town. As the team progressed, excitement surged with each win. By the time of the semifinal and championship games, Mannino Park buzzed with energy. The overwhelming turnout of fans cheering on the boys made the moment even more special.

You might ask why I call it a sto rybook season. After the final out of the State Championship, the scene was pure cinematic magic: players and coaches tossed their gloves in the air, air horns blared, and fans stormed the field to cele brate this incredible achievement. It was a victory not just for SWS but for Old Bridge Township.

believe that we are better together.”

Throughout the Y’s history, Goganzer, noted, it has responded to the community’s many changing needs, adding affordable childcare for working families, offering summer camp programs for youth and teens, and providing personal and family counseling, in addition to swim lessons and extensive health and wellness programs..

Ticket Information

Individual tickets are priced at $275 and include all the evening’s festivities. Guests are encouraged to dress in “Gilded Age” cocktail attire stepping back in time while supporting the future of our Y.

WHAT ROLE CAN PARENTS PLAY IN COMBATING PEER PRESSURE AND ISOLATION DURING

BACK-TO-SCHOOL?

As children head back to school this fall, many are feeling the weight of social isolation and peer pressure. After long summer breaks or adjusting back from remote learning, reconnecting with friends or making new ones can feel overwhelming. When kids struggle to find their social footing, they may experience loneliness, which can deeply affect their emotional well-being.

Peer pressure adds another layer of stress. Many children feel they need to act or look a certain way to be accepted by their peers. This pressure to “fit in” can lead to anxiety and self-doubt, especially for those who feel different or left out.

As parents and educators, we can play a key role in helping children through these tough moments. By creating a safe space for them to talk openly about their feelings, we can help them understand that it’s okay to be themselves. Encouraging activities that build confidence and foster genuine connections, like joining clubs or engaging in hobbies, can make a world of difference.

At Ellie Mental Health Old Bridge,

we understand the importance of addressing these challenges with care. Our team of licensed counselors and social workers is here to support your child in becoming their best self. Located conveniently on Rt 18 South by the Wawa, we offer both in-person and virtual appointments to meet you where you are.

YOUR VOICE IN TRENTON

Many seniors in my district depend heavily on Social Security as their primary source of income, and the idea of taxing those received benefits adds an unnecessary financial strain that we simply cannot ignore.

Recently, I proposed a resolution urging Congress to pass Congressman Jeff Van Drew’s legislation H.R. 9359, The Social Security Tax Freedom Act, that would remove federal income taxes on Social Security payments.

With the cost of living in New Jersey continuing to rise, especially for basic necessities, our seniors are feeling the pinch more than ever. Eliminating federal income taxes on Social Security benefits is a com-

mon-sense solution that would provide immediate relief to those who have worked hard their entire lives and now deserve to retire with dignity and peace of mind.

Every dollar counts for New Jerseyans living on fixed incomes and the double taxation of social security benefits amounts to nothing more than government-sanctioned theft.

I urge my fellow Old Bridge residents to join me by writing to their federal representatives in support of this legislation. Furthermore, I want to remind residents to vote on election day, Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Residents can vote by mail, in person early voting and on Election Day. Please contact the local Clerks office should you need information regarding voting status, polling location or scheduled times.

THINK OLD BRIDGE

Steve Mamakas, Executive officer

Why is Old Bridge so attractive? Why do so many seek to move here and also invest in opening a business. One reason is the steady growth from small business which is the backbone of a community. We also know the residents spread the word of the location and proximity to some major cities and how it is a great town and the people that make it Old Bridge. The town is known now as location, location, location and the office promotes our town that way to the business world. Due to the fact we have an area that is very attractive to current and prospective employers because of location. The office receives numerous calls from prospective residents, small, large business investors inquiring about the Town and areas. Having heard it’s a great place to relocate and live. With quick access to the city and other points with transit and major roadway access. We have shared that Old Bridge is in the golden triangle of roads with five major roadways running through: RT 9, 18, 34, 35 & the GSP, making it a great location for residents and conducive to commerce and small and large business growth. That is why Old Bridge township is so attractive to many. In the near future you will see many new businesses opening and Grand Opening across the township

from small entrepreneurs to high end restaurant investors to major restaurant chains. Providing the community with many shopping and dining options.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SAT AND ACT

The SAT and ACT are the prevalent standardized tests used for college admissions in the U.S., but they differ in structure, content, and focus.

The SAT is divided into two main sections: Reading/ Writing and Math. The ACT has four sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. The digital SAT takes only 2 hours and 14 minutes to assess a score because it is section-adaptive, while the ACT is 2 hours and 55 minutes.

Both SAT verbal modules blend reading and writing and have one short passage per question. The ACT English and reading sections are separate and each comprises long passages.

The SAT is half math. It has an embedded Desmos calculator and, like the reading/writing, is section-adaptive. It places more emphasis on algebra and data analysis. The ACT’s math section includes a broader range of topics, including more geometry and trigonometry.

One major difference is the ACT’s dedicated Science section. While the SAT integrates scientific concepts into

its reading passages, the ACT specifically tests the ability to interpret data, graphs, and scientific hypotheses.

The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600, while the ACT uses a 1 to 36 scale. SAT scores are an aggregate of the two main sections, while the ACT is an average of the four sections.

The SAT offers more time per question, favoring students who prefer a slower, more deliberate pace. The ACT, on the other hand, is faster-paced, requiring strong time management skills. Ultimately, the choice between SAT and ACT depends on a student’s strengths and preferences. Ivy Masters recommends students take a mock test of each to see which test score is comparably higher.

The ACT is undergoing a major change in September 2025. Suggestion for a topic? You can reach me at Paul.Pscolka@ivymasters.com 833-SATsACT www.ivymasters.com

A NEW DAWN IN BREAST CANCER DETECTION: OLD BRIDGE MEDICAL CENTER EMBRACES AI TECHNOLOGY

As we enter Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I am proud to share a significant advancement in our commitment to women’s health. Our imaging center is home to the most advanced, high-resolution 3D mammography technology, which is supported by Genius AI computer-aided detection. This is a crucial step forward in the fight against breast cancer.

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women, and early detection is key to improving outcomes. The new technology we’ve integrated enhances imaging quality, which allows us to detect abnormalities at earlier stages than ever before. This means more accurate diagnoses, fewer false positives, and a more streamlined process for patients.

Our AI Assisted Detection mammography machines feature advanced imaging capabilities, including higher resolution and improved contrast. These enhance-

or subtle changes that might be missed by older equipment. Additionally, these machines are designed to be more comfortable and efficient, making the screening experience more pleasant for our patients.

Dr. Norman Sorkin, radiologist, emphasized the impact of this technology saying, “The new AI Assisted Detection represents a major leap forward in our ability to detect breast cancer early. With these advancements we can provide our patients with the highest level of accura-

cy and care, ultimately leading to better outcomes and a higher quality of life.”

We understand that the process of getting a mammogram can be daunting. That’s

why we are committed to not only providing the latest technology but also ensuring compassionate care throughout each step of the journey. Our skilled radiologists and support staff are dedicated to making every patient feel at ease and informed.

As we highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we encourage all women to schedule their mammograms and stay vigilant about their health. The new AI Assisted Detection represents our hospital’s dedication to offering the best care and resources available, and we are committed to supporting every patient through their health journey. Together, let’s continue to make strides in breast cancer detection and treatment, and work towards a future where breast cancer is a preventable and manageable condition.

A CALL TO COMMITMENT

I recently started a new Midweek Series on the book of Proverbs and I can’t help but look back over my life and recall the many ways its wisdom has been like a father to me. Not having a father to raise me, or a mother for that matter, left me insecure and often hopeless in my adolescence. Many children today are left without any real guidance at all. Overprotected in the real world, they stay inside being raised by technology. Underprotected in the virtual world, they have become prey to the ideologies brainwashing this generation. The virtual world is an easy escape from the hard work of commitment and relationships in the real world and the social media intended to “connect” us all has done inestimable damage in separating us. Making commitments is a protection against being taken over by lesser emotions and selfish thoughts—but if the majority of our time is spent online, commitment isn’t necessary. When I come across someone online who becomes hard to deal with, I can just block them and move on to the next person. Real

relationships take the hard work which commitment ensures will happen!

Our Creator made us for relationship with Him as well and that too implies commitment. As we believe the gospel—that Jesus’ death demonstrates His love and provides forgiveness—we will learn to regard the Bible as more valuable than our wandering desires and changing feelings.

You are welcome to join us in the book of Proverbs on Wednesday nights in person or online at ccob.org and gain the real guidance necessary for life!

OLD BRIDGE FIRE DISTRICT #2 & #3 URGES RESIDENTS TO CHECK THEIR SMOKE ALARMS

As part of Fire Prevention Week, Old Bridge Fire District #3 is reminding residents about the importance of working smoke alarms in every home. Smoke alarms are a critical first line of defense in protecting your family during a fire. Make sure to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. For extra safety, test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. It’s also essential to replace all smoke alarms after 10 years or sooner if they stop responding during tests. Pay special attention to ensuring alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities. For homes with older-style smoke detectors, remember to change the batteries when you turn your clocks back in the fall. Newer models come equipped with 10-year sealed batteries, eliminating the need for battery changes. However, these alarms should still be tested regularly to ensure they are functioning

properly. Once the sealed battery alarm reaches the end of its lifespan or stops working, the entire unit must be replaced. Taking these simple steps can make all the difference in preventing tragedies and keeping your family safe. Stay vigilant and ensure your smoke alarms are in top working order. If you have any questions or concerns, always feel free to contact our offices.
