There are some months of the year that seem to drag on, and then there is May. For those of us with kids, it’s the end of the school year. Concerts, graduation, awards ceremonies, and then – boom! Summer hits. Where does the time go? The same can be said for things at Anshai Torah. A year ago, I sat in the annual meeting, watching Dan Cohn give his fnal remarks as an incredible president. What would the annual meeting look like when I was president? I didn’t give
it too much thought at the time, but now that May is here, a full year has gone by and now it’s my turn to host all of you at this year’s meeting, which will be on May 16. Looking back, there was
nothing that could have prepared any of us for what we are about to be a part of.
In January, Rabbi Weinberg announced his plans for retirement, and he generously gave us a 2.5 year plan. I am a full believer that planning for every possible scenario is the best way to be prepared. That being said, how on earth do we possibly look for a Senior Rabbi to follow in our founder’s footsteps? The answer was in our Constitution; a Pulpit Committee. The Board of Directors nominated and elected a group of 7, and they hit the ground running. This group of people will be presenting their fndings and recommendations at the meeting. Your vote matters, and now is the best time
to come to the meeting, have dinner, and vote on issues that are important to you!
We’ve had some incredible events at Anshai this spring, including Yom HaZikaron, Yom HaAtzmaut, 2nd grade graduation, and more! Our hallways have been busy, and there’s no end in sight. While we congratulate the 2nd graders on their promotion to “ofcial” religious school, we also
take the time in May to honor and recognize our graduating senior new chapters.

Meira Yael and
Eliyana (Ellie) of and and & Rebecca Rey.
Ellie is a 6th grader at Robinson Middle School in Plano, Texas where she is actively involved in choir, and strives to push herself academically in both regular classes and Hebrew class. From an early age, Ellie has been a gifted musician. When Ellie isn’t knee-deep in her studies, she can be found playing piano in the family music room,
harmonizing to songs with her mom, reading realistic fction in her free time, or making memories with her friends.
For Ellie’s mitzvah project, Ellie focused her attention on a non-proft initiative that provides education to underprivileged children in Guyana. Abraham’s Tent provides equitable opportunities by nurturing young scholars in the Guyanese community. To assist in these eforts, Ellie assembled 40 backpacks full with school supplies that went directly to the students enrolled in the Abraham Tent school. This was a passion project for Ellie, as she has always held education as a core value of her own and hopes that each child will be equipped with the tools and resources they need to reach their own academic potential. The Rey family would like to thank Ellie’s Hebrew tutor, Sherri Massarella, for her loving instruction and patience, as Ellie has diligently prepared for her special day. The Rey family also extends a special thanks to Anshai Torah Preschool for instilling a love for Jewish education in Ellie and to
Congregation Anshai Torah that has been her house of moving to DFW nearly and a thank you to Rabbi Kushnick and Rabbi Weinberg for their leadership guidance as they have watched Ellie grow of the mitzvot.

We eagerly await this joyous occasion as Ellie is called to the torah before her congregants, family, and friends.
James Aiden Kurtzman (“Jamie”) will be called to Bar Mitzvah on Saturday morning, May 13, 2023, at Congregation Anshai Torah. Jamie is
the son of Hillary Kurtzman and Roberto de la Cruz. grandson of Laura Kurtzman and Jimmie Kurtzman z’l.
Jamie loves all things sports – watching sports, playing sports, talking sports. He began attending Dallas Stars games at six months old and around seven years old began begging to take hockey lessons. His mom fnally relented and he took to the sport like a duck to…ice?
Jamie has just completed his third year in the Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League, frst as a Dallas Penguin and more recently as center for the Texas Warriors, traveling to Colorado Springs, Detroit, Nashville and other cities with his team. He is planning to add JV hockey and Maccabi Games to his
Torah as a the He is the hockey roster this summer.
Jamie is completing 7th grade at Levine Academy and can be found playing basketball for the Levine Academy Stallions in his “spare time”. He loves pickleball competitions, gaga, boating, and just about any other water activity during the summers at Camp Champions. He also enjoys holding sour candy eating competitions with his grandmother, and just about any roller coaster or thrill ride. Somehow between all these activities he still fnds time to play Xbox with his friends while simultaneously talking on the phone.
For his mitzvah projects, Jamie has helped fll “manna bags” at Feed My Starving Children.
These bags of rice, soy, vitamins and dried
vegetables are sent to less privileged communities around the world and Jamie was amazed that during each two hour session he and his fellow volunteers were able to pack enough meals to feed over 65 kids for an entire year! Jamie also participated in The Birthday
Project, helping to host monthly birthday parties for young children currently living in domestic violence shelters.
We would like to thank Jamie’s tutor, Warren Rubin, for his encouragement and guidance as Jamie prepared for this special day. We would also like Hebrew and Judaic Studies teachers at Levine Academy, and Rabbi Weinberg and Rabbi Kushnick for helping to inspire Jamie’s love of Judaism.

“This is always a great day, a great event and a chance for players of all levels, from everywhere in the community, to come together,” said Jef Arbesman, co-chairing the event with Jennifer Redman. “I love Anshai and heading this program lets me share my passion for golf and my passion for our shul and the kids who are our future - really, that’s what it’s all about.”

June 5th Annual Weinberg Family Golf Classic begins at 7:30a.m. on Monday, 5 at The Lakes at Castle Hills. The public is invited to join in the event, with golf clubs swinging at 9 a.m.
Over the years, more than $40,000 raised has benefted CAT’s Youth Scholarship Program which helps its children attend Jewish summer camps, leadership development programs, Israel experiences, Gap-Year programs and the March of the Living tour.
The event features a “hole in one,” contest, a rafe and lunch and an awards ceremony following the tournament.
“The Classic is our passion project to support the children of Anshai and there’s no better place to put money or efort,” said Redman. “We have wonderful teams and sponsors and hope still for more. Bringing friends from work, neighbors or family and sponsoring a hole or contest is a fantastic opportunity to promote business. In this time of antisemitism, we’re thrilled to have an event that is shared by Jews and those who are not, by people from all over the community for common good.”
Players can register as a team, or individually, and will play the 18 holes two groups at a time, with four players in each group. In addition to the lunch (Kosher supervision provided by Anshai Torah), snacks and drinks will be provided throughout the course.
Players experienced and less so, will hit the Lakes at Castle Hills course. Howard Eisenberg, who will pull his clubs down from the attic, and Richard Berry, a returning player who often relishes his time on the course, agree it’s going to be a splendid day.

“The Classic is always terrifc, there’s something for everybody and I’m looking forward to it. Ability is relative and we’re all out there to enjoy ourselves and raise some money for the kids,” said Berry, playing with his son Adam, Harry Kranz, and Hugh Robinson. “It’s fun, and it can be competitive, but most of all it’s a good, fun time.”
