Passover! To some, it is the hardest holiday to prepare for. We deep clean our homes, rid our house of chametz, and prepare dinner in a laborious manner. There are so many steps to follow, recipes to be challenged while keeping to the strict rules, and a meal that turns into a long event. It’s stressful, it always seems to sneak up on us, and those eight days of eating matzoh can seem like an eternity (just ask my children)! However, once we’re in the middle of it, remembering the sufering of our ancestors and relating it to virtually any news headline today…it just makes sense. If we don’t remember and honor the past, our traditions will disappear.
At Anshai Torah, the Rabbis, staf, and Board of Directors keep all of this at the front of our minds as we plan for everything. The Men’s Spirited Steak Seder, Miriam’s Cup celebration, the Oneg once a month before evening shabbat services – they all happen in the present, but they bring such joy to help us prepare both spiritually and physically for every holiday.
involvement is more your speed, just let us know that you want to be a part of the action! We have so many things
The nominating committee is being formed to bring forth the new leaders of our shul. I know that many of you want to get involved and don’t know how. This is me shining a spotlight on this area right now: now is your calling to step up! We have committees that need attention, such as a special needs initiative, parent-teacher liaisons, community integration, and so many others. If being on the board seems daunting, talk to any current or past board member and ask! If committee going on, and everything we do is for you, our members and friends.
When I was young, we would always go to my paternal grandparents’ home for the frst seder. We’d see my dad’s extended family; distant cousins from France, Israel, Chicago, St. Louis, and Houston. Even though we only had one day a year to be together, it was always as if no time had passed. My great uncle Lou would lead us in the most fabulous songs during the seder, and the way he masterfully hid the afkomen was legendary. Though so many people from that table are gone, we have kept those traditions alive in our home. Our kids remember every place we’ve hid that broken middle matzah, and they still (at ages 16 and 20) look forward to what the prize is for fnding it. We’ve gone from the necessity of having a “kid’s table” to one large group of adults. Even though I’m usually ready to go to sleep by the time the seder starts, it’s always as if a jolt of electricity courses through me and we celebrate. We remember, we wash, we feast, we drink, and we fnd.
I will ask you this question: when the search for the afkomen begins, ask yourself what you are looking for. What do you want out

Thank You Notes...
I would like to express my appreciation for a wonderful send-of after my 22 years at Congregation Anshai Torah. I am grateful for those who were able to attend the reception, but I regret I did not have the opportunity to speak with everyone. I have made some the people I have worked with and for. The four-hour day, two-day a week job turned into an unexpected second career for me -- not one I was looking for or expected -- but one that I have thoroughly enjoyed! I look forward to many continued friendships.

From underground caves and the Tisch Family Biblical Zoo, honoring the Armored Corps Memorial, culinary tours, and a visit to Yad Vashem each day - and every evening - was packed. Visits with kibbutzniks, and soldiers, Shabbat at the Kotel, and Havdalah overlooking the Old City were among the greatest memories for everyone in attendance.
The group’s 12-day visit, scheduled and led by Israel Maven Tours, took them through classical sites and adventures they never might have imagined. U.S.-born Josh Even-Chen, who as a child made aliyah with his family, led Anshai’s contingent to exceptional encounters each day.
Joining Yafa and Rabbi Stefan Weinberg, as well as Talia, Nadav, Levi and Rabbi Michael Kushnick were Talia’s parents Jill and Stephen Saravay, Randi and Jefrey Aaronson, Ashley and Michael Acks and their children, Blake and Caroline and Ashley’s parents Geanine and Gary Cobbel. Marco Rodriguez, along with his mother Adelpha, Sarah and Chad Rosen and their children, Adena and Adam, and Kim and Robert Velevis with daughters Jordan and Hailey rounded out the 3-generation group of travelers.
During the trip the group saw many friends from home, from the children’s camps or schools, and they reconnected with CAT friends living in Israel - Jack Molad, Jordana Weinberg and Danielle Zubery and her family. “Being with my family at the Kotel was an absolute blessing,” said Michael Acks.“As 26 individuals, some we knew well - some really not-so-much - we became very close and the experience of our children, with our rabbis, of all of us, is something I’ll never forget.
Hearing the group’s stories, traveling to Israel any time of year would have been wonderful but for each, sharing Chanukah together in Israel was exquisite. For the Acks’ grandparents, it was their frst time ever leaving the U.S. and to have Israel be their frst passport stop, it was a dream come true.

Sharing in the multi-generational connection was Marco and his mother. Having worked at Camp Young Judaea and taught at Anshai Torah, Shearith Israel, Tiferet Israel, and at Ann and Nate Levine Academy, Marco says he’s always learning. While he’d traveled to Israel at 15 on Dallas’ Teen Tour, at 25 with the J, and earlier in December as a JFGD Schultz Israel Fellow, sharing this trip with his mother - who’d been hit by a car just a month before but who forged on - was unlike any other.

For Talia Kushnick, with her husband, parents, and children, the greatest gift was seeing the connection her sons had to the place so important to her and Rabbi Kushnick. “We thought maybe ‘everyone’ being Jewish and ‘everything’ being Kosher and Chanukah everywhere they looked. The secret hideaway where
they were too young, but we were wrong, and it was beautiful,” said Talia. “It resonated just right, and they loved bullets were manufactured, underground beneath the kibbutz laundry – it was ‘cool,’ and cool is lasting. It was important to us as a family, as a People. It was magical.”
