ATELIER17
Paris & New York
Bri&sh printmaker Stanley William Hayter opened a printmaking studio at 17 Rue Campagne-Première in Paris, France. Naming it Atelier 17, his aim was to create a space for ar&sts wan&ng to explore intaglio techniques in a non-academic seJng, one in which they could work alone or together without hierarchy Ar&sts from throughout Europe, the U.S., and beyond came to immerse themselves in the experimental nature of the studio, fostering an environment of collabora&on and discovery; soon, Atelier 17 had become one of the most significant studios in the history of fine printmaking.
For six decades, Atelier 17 weathered significant global changes and acted as a beacon for ar&sts needing a crea&ve haven in &mes of turmoil As World War II ramped up in Europe, Hayter relocated the studio to New York, allowing ar&sts fleeing persecu&on or the fallout of war to con&nue to make art and exhibit Developed in the age of European Surrealism and at the dawn of Abstract Expressionism, Atelier 17 effec&vely bolstered Modernism movements in the United States in a way that had not been seen before, aWrac&ng leading ar&sts from nearly every con&nent. In 1950, as Europe began recovering from the war, Hayter moved the studio back to Paris. It con&nued to operate as a collabora&ve workshop un&l its reforma&on into Atelier Contrepoint in 1988, which s&ll operates today.
Notable ar&sts who worked at Atelier 17 include Max Ernst, Joseph Hecht, Joan Miro, Leonor Fini, Marc Chagall, Roderick Mead, John Buckland-Wright, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Helen Phillips, Krishna Reddy, Jackson Pollock, Alice Trumbull Mason, and Robert Motherwell, among many others
This exhibi&on illustrates a small sample of works by the students of Atelier 17 offered by the Annex, who for over forty years has strived to illuminate the incredible output that emerged from the important ins&tu&on. This collec&on ranges from the 1940s to the 1970s and includes original fine prints, drawings, and sculpture.
