KATHRYN METZ
Variations on Three Plates
A PORTFOLIO OF SEVENTEEN INTAGLIO PRINTS IN THREE SUITES
1966
Contents and context:
This is, for all intents and purposes, a teaching por4olio. Kathryn Metz (American: 1932-2018) created a progressive series uGlizing three different composiGons, Gtled “Overcoming,” “ The Cry,” and “Paris Spring,” each in an ediGon of five to seven variant impressions Within these ediGons, each impression highlights a variaGon on a technique: intaglio, relief, and a combinaGon of the two. All but one impression from each composiGon include color viscosity, the technique developed at the famed experimental printmaking workshop, Atelier 17.
Each work is pencil signed, Gtled, and ediGoned, and was printed by the arGst on cream BFK Rives wove paper.
A note on Metz ’s edi2oning:
In total, Metz executed ten regularly ediGoned Varia%ons on Three Plates por4olios plus four arGst proof por4olios. This is the fourth arGst ’s proof por4olio. As such, the ediGoning isn’t enGrely straigh4orward on all of the composiGons.
Metz ’s method of ediGoning, for example, is as following:
“2 . I . ap” which equals:
“plate two, impression one, arGst ’s proof ”
Discrepancies in her ediGoning in the proofs are, for example, as follows:
Plate one, “Overcoming,” includes a total of five impressions, each noted as impressions I – V, impression 1 through 5 However, in this por4olio, she has ediGoned the first plate/first impression thusly:
“I . 2. ap”
or, “plate one, second impression, arGst ’s proof ”
Despite her notaGon of this piece as the second impression, we can assume it is the first, as there is only one technique used (intaglio) and only one color (black), which is the criteria for Metz ’s process, and it is how she ediGoned the remainder of the impressions for all three plates
