A look back Highlights and key takeaways from this year’s Canadian Greenhouse Conference.

And just like that, a new year approaches

I can’t believe it, but this is the last issue of Greenhouse Canada for 2024. Where has the time gone? It feels like 2024 just arrived!

Maybe it’s the shortened days and long, lingering nights that have me in a nostalgic mood and I find myself reflecting on these past 12 months and marveling at how the Canadian greenhouse industry continues to work as a collective to support the growth and sustainability of the sector.

From all the events and webinars that take months to organize and plan, to the smaller gatherings organized by growers themselves to discuss current issues and industry challenges; from the institutions that facilitate research and professional development, to the growers who invite tour groups into their operation to share insights on production, this industry and its people continue to show up for one another.

and provided with invaluable insights from their operators, from which meaningful conversations erupted (Read more about the CGC on Page 26).

For my part, I’ve tried over this past year to bring that spirit of collaboration and community to the pages of this magazine and this month, I think some of the work featured here captures that.

From Niagara College, we feature two articles on two very different research projects: one, found on page 14, looks at a new media amendment called vermichar, a combination of worm poop and biochar, which is showing promise. In another piece, on page 20, we explore how electrical conductivity (EC) affects the growth of cannabis plants in a controlled environment.

We’re also featuring a piece in this issue on autonomous cannabis cultivation in the greenhouse and the future of the practice on page 8.

We round out this issue of Greenhouse Canada with a profile on Sietse Elsinga, the owner/grower of Frisia Flora Ltd., a small but productive

“This industry and its people continue to show up for one another.”

Consider our Grower Day event in June; a panel of growers from near and far volunteered their time to come lead a discussion about sustainability, not to mention the seven researchers who shared their work with the room full of growers who paid to be there to hear their expertise. In February, the inaugural Leamington Grower Expo, organized by a small group of passionate growers, also saw similar participation from suppliers, researchers, growers and allied trades. Attendance was phenomenal as well. In October, we had the Canadian Greenhouse Conference. The bus tour alone was one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve been part of so far in this industry and all because we were welcomed into these businesses

operation located in Beamsville. Go to page 32 and read up on how this firstgeneration greenhouse grower has built this efficient operation.

And finally, as we wrap up 2024 and look towards 2025, I’d just like to thank our loyal readership for sticking with us for another year and this industry for continuing to support our publication. We’re thrilled to still be able to play a role in this dynamic and endlessly fascinating sector.

Happy holidays, dear readers and best wishes for a healthy and profitable New Year. See you in 2025!

PRECISE INNOVATION

INNOVATION

LEFT

Drones have ample potential in greenhouses: if properly outfitted, one can map the details of a cultivated area in seconds or even detect unwell plants.

If necessity is the mother of invention, then agriculture is the muse of innovation. Cannabis cultivation in commercial greenhouses is encouraging creativity and development in software; robotics; sensors; drones, analytical software, and cameras. The specific needs of cannabis growers are inspiring adaptation and adoption as is the tremendous potential customer base. According to the UN (Blue, 2023), by 2034, global sales of cannabis will be $149 billion with a global patient and customer base of 188 million.

BENEFITS OF AUTONOMOUS AGRICULTURE

Autonomous Agriculture (AA), through software and computer monitoring helps growers with controlling temperature, humidity, light, CO2 levels, 24/7 access as well as remote access. Using specialized sensors means growers can produce products consistent in quality, with higher yields, with crop management capabilities, and that are more attuned to the specifications of customers.

Dr. Youbin Zheng, Professor, School of Environmental Sciences, University of Guelph, adds that AA offers better water and nutrient management. Without proper management, root rot and plant pathogens can occur. An obvious benefit of AA is that it reduces reliance on human labour. This reduces costs, errors, and inconsistencies in plant care. AA, Zheng observes, “can do a great job to

balance a crop” as well as managing pathogens, infection, and minimizing water and nutrient use. The result of which also includes reduced environmental damage.

Reducing energy costs such as heating, lighting, and cooling are additional benefits of AA to cannabis growers, notes Jinfeng Liu, Professor, Faculty of Engineering, Chemicals and Materials Engineering Dept., University of Alberta. Many studies in precision agriculture show that there is a reduction in energy costs, according to Dr. Liu, up to 30 per cent to 40 per cent. Additionally, he notes, there is a decrease in operation costs and environmental impacts.

DATA DIAMONDS

Sensors and cameras in addition to saving on labour costs help growers attain “optimal growing conditions” (Robertson 2024). The benefits are not just in managing crops but also in managing ROI. Data are diamonds for growers. Data can be sent from sensors, robots and robotic attachments, cameras, drones, irrigation and fertilizer equipment to analytic software. The continuous stream of data can be sent in real time to the software so that a grower can know immediately the health of crops, the resources used, and the strains of cannabis that are in need of care. Connected with other data, such as current market costs, inventory, and customer preferences, analytic software creates a powerful tool in AA.

How autonomous agriculture can address the specific needs of greenhouse cannabis growers

RIGHT

Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands) is developing the Sweeper Robot. The robot is expected to work 20 hours per day. There are plans to enable the robot to detect disease and the internal quality of the fruit.

PREDICTABILITY AND CONSISTENCY

The Internet of Things (IOT) is focused on creating connectivity, i.e., a network, of ‘smart’ technology. Within a cannabis grower’s business, a small-scale application of IOT potentially means that data such as resources consumed (heat, light, water, etc.), plant health, harvesting, packaging, and distribution, will all create their own data streams. These can be used to fine tune the plants and their care. The IOT is an emerging way for cannabis cultivation to improve efficiency and profitability and comply with regulations (Blue, 2023).

AA systems can help monitor the needs of different strains of plants, their environmental conditions, equipment functioning, potential yield, current inventory and order processing (CannaBI n.d.).

ANALYTIC PLATFORMS (APS)

APs are “software that enables you to collect, process, analyze, and visualize data for the purpose of generating insights and making informed decisions (Analytics Activation 2024). An AP is a “centralized system for managing and understanding data across numerous sources and channels (Analytics Activation 2024).

Olds College of Agriculture and Technology (Alberta) performed a fouryear study of “potential use of AI to provide agronomic advice.” Researchers collected soil samples, yield data, satellite and drone imagery to create an algorithm to predict levels of soil nutrients and organic materials ( Doig 2024). The research results were positive. “Data is the way forward for agriculture,” states Simons (Doig 2024).

AP allow for various “siloes” of data to be funnelled into a “unified and standardized feed.” The benefit is “precision forecasting,” an increased ROI and a decrease in wasteful spending. Combining sales and market data can help growers “identify where revenue opportunities exist and strategize their market approach accordingly, as well as view “sales data in real-time,” for example.

Neatleaf (San Francisco) use sensors to follow data such as “leaf colour, temperature, and humidity multiple times per day for individual plants and microclimates” (Robertson 2024). The data is presented on a dashboard “with charts, heat maps and light maps”

(Robertson 2024). The system, called Spyder, helps growers make decisions. The data allows growers to know where crop care should be directed.

HOW DRONES CAN HELP

Drones, when outfitted with customized

Cannabis cultivation in commercial greenhouses is encouraging creativity and development in robotics, sensors, drones, analytical software, and cameras. The specific needs of cannabis growers are inspiring adaptation and adoption as is the tremendous potential customer base.

cameras, can “pinpoint specific weeds and pests (Branch 2023). When outfitted with GPS they can map the “details” of a cultivated area in seconds (Branch 2023). Drones can detect plant weakening such as by diseases, pests, nutrient deficiencies (Branch 2023). “Tiny’ drones already exist. Researchers at MAVLab - Micro Air Vehicle Lab - TU Delft are developing tiny drones to map out “difficult to explore areas” with applications that also apply to agriculture (Invest in Holland 2024).

“Given the multiple separated growing spaces and the defined height and perimeter of a growing area in a greenhouse, an alternative to drones could be a fixed-mounted system for dronelike machines where one could essentially loop or snake around the grow room from above, not unlike the camera systems used for sports arenas,” said Karina Jarzecki, Masters student in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program at the University of British Columbia in Okanagan.

HOW ROBOTS HELP

Robots can be used for harvesting cannabis flowers according to Dr. Zheng, author of Handbook for Cannabis Production in Controlled Environments. Zheng notes that robots can sort flowers according to size and grades. They can also be used in storage in control temperature and humidity.

In research done by the European Commission (CORDIS - EU) the Sweet Pepper Harvesting Robot, or the ROS-Robotic-Operating-

System) has a patent pending on an attachment that allows a robot to “grasp” the sweet pepper using sensors to guide it. A Light Field Sensor is being worked on that will be able to track colour and 3D data at the same time European Commission (CORDIS - EU).

Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands) is developing the Sweeper Robot. When fully developed, the robot is expected to work 20 hours per day and will be able to assess fruit colour, shape, perimeter and arear ratio, and anomalies. There are plans to enable the robot to detect disease and the internal quality of the fruit.

This robot is a demonstration of the “cognitive skills” possible in a robot in agriculture (WUR, n.d.), as well as the haptic skill potential of a robot and attachments.

THE FUTURE

Maintenance of cannabis plants and root zones are currently “challenging,” according to Dr. Zheng. Another challenge is “removing old and diseased leaves and lower branches for air flow and penetration.” When the tasks are performed by humans it is time consuming and costly, Zheng notes. This provides the impetus to find a solution using robot helpers.

Calculating growth rate and growth rate change is another potential application of AA. Overall, AI can remove “much of the manual and logistical work involved in cultivating cannabis.” (Robertson 2024).

BARRIERS TO DEVELOPMENT AND ADOPTION

A “worker’s task, which takes several steps to execute, may include subjectivity, or relies on expertise built over a career like pest/ disease identification - the complexity for an autonomous solution has made it difficult for solutions to be developed or widely scaled up. A lack of standardization between greenhouse layout and design plays a role,” states Jarzecki (who has four formal years of experience in cannabis cultivation and one additional year in her Master’s).

“There persists a distrust in the cannabis industry of new or alternative methods from what growers have been accustomed to, I have seen countless growers stubbornly stick to their old ways and do so out of shame of not understanding these new technologies. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and embrace learning some new skills!”, Jarzecki advises.

Some AA are still too costly for some growers --- depending on the size of their operation. Dr. Liu notes that many greenhouses already use basic AA to monitor temperature, humidity, light, water and CO2. However, drones are less commonly used. Robots, in the form of robot carts outfitted with cameras are “more affordable” he notes. Robotic arms, currently, are much more expensive according to Dr. Liu.

“This trend to precision agriculture is unstoppable. Everything is working to that direction.” notes Dr. Liu.

Fuelling growth naturally

New media amendment shows promise in Niagara College growth trial.

The Horticultural and Environmental Sciences Innovation Centre (HESIC), a part of Niagara College’s Research and Innovation division, conducted a trial in 2022 on the effects of a new media amendment product called vermichar. The product combines worm castings and biochar and was used as a media amendment on two greenhouse crops, basil (Ocimum basilicum ‘Lettuce Leaf’) and strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa ‘Albion’). The results of this growth trial are presented and discussed here.

The organic produce sectors of both Ontario and Canada have seen a trend in increased demand for organically grown produce over the past few years (OCC 2022; Zeidan and Monaghan, 2021).

ABOVE

Organic pre-plant media amendments for growing greenhouse crops in containers must be able to maintain similar water- and nutrientholding capacities as conventional soilless media, in addition to providing the specific crop with its necessary nutrients (Cox n.d.; Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries 2015). Combined with a widespread increase in both agricultural and food waste production (Jörissen et al. 2015; Dick, 2017), these trends create a unique opportunity for a product that addresses both issues. For instance, composting worms consume food waste and produce valuable manure output, which has the potential to be used as a natural soil amendment.

Some worms, like red wiggler worms (Eisenia fetida), consume food waste and produce manure output that is understood to be high in nutrients and microbes beneficial to soil and plant health.

– William Crenshaw of Greener Roots Farm, Nashville, Tennessee

This output, called worm castings, is collected and refined to create a useful product that is understood to be high in nutrients and microbes beneficial to soil and plant health (Chaoui et al. 2003). These worm castings are blended with biochar, a charcoal-like material resulting from the contained burning of organic material (CSANR 2024; Murray 2018), and aimed to stabilize and capture nutrients released from the worm castings, as well as improve the beneficial microbial habitat in their vermichar product.

METHODOLOGY

The effect of vermichar on plant growth was tested by HESIC at different volumes as a media amendment (zero per cent, 10 per cent, and 20 per cent), in addition to being used as a starter for compost tea in this trial. Basil and strawberry crops were selected as a short term, low nutrient-

demand leafy crop, and a long-term high nutrient-demanding fruiting crop respectively, and grown in five treatments containing vermichar and/or compost tea, or neither (‘control’).

The greenhouse strawberry fertilizer applied to T1 was balanced regularly at an electrical conductivity (E.C.) of 1.3 mS/cm and a pH of 6.9-7.1. The compost tea was brewed at the beginning of each week using 38L of tap water, which was aerated in the Compost Tea System10™ for 24 hours.

Following this 24-hour period, 4L of vermichar and 60 mL of molasses were added to the basket to aerate for an additional 24 hours before being applied to the crops (Figure 2)

Occasional samples were taken from the compost tea for microscopic analysis to visualise microbial content. The tap water used to mix the greenhouse strawberry fertilizer, aerate the compost

tea, and water treatments T3 and T5 was directly from a greenhouse line.

Throughout the growth trial, weekly photos of plants were taken to demonstrate growth over time as well as the physical characteristics of each treatment. Parameters that were measured bi-weekly within each treatment during the growth period include soil pH and E.C. via pourthrough method, leaf blade chlorophyll content via Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD), plant height in centimetres (basil), and flower initiation date and flower count (strawberry).

Strawberries were harvested at commercial maturity (three-fourths red to fully red) (Pritts and Watkins, 1998) every two to three days as necessary, and weighed. Harvested fruit quality was assessed by analysis of average total soluble solids (TSS, °Brix) and titratable acidity (TA).

Basil was assessed at harvest by height

commercially available media fertigated with soluble chemical fertilizers.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this trial show a clear potential for the combined use of vermichar as a media amendment alongside a compost tea starter for supplemental fertigation in containergrown fruits and vegetables.

The compost tea made with vermichar did not positively impact basil or strawberry crop growth or health unless when applied with existing vermichar in the growth media.

The increase in growth between T4 and T5 compared to T2 and T3 was likely due to the availability of water and nutrients to the crop due to the increase in vermichar in these treatments.

(in cm) of above-ground growth, fresh weight versus dry weight of aboveground growth, and root mass was photographically documented.

RESULTS

Results of this trial show that 10 per cent vermichar by volume incorporated into media produced benefits for both crops when fertigated with compost tea (Treatment 4).

Of all treatments with vermichar, basil was the tallest, had the highest average SPAD measurements, and produced the highest overall amount of biomass in the 10 per cent vermichar blend fertigated with compost tea (Figure 1)

The height and leaf colour of this treatment was similar to the control, however the 10 per cent vermichar and compost tea treatment surpassed the control in the amount of overall of basil produced by weight.

In the strawberry crop, the 10 per cent vermichar with compost tea treatment initiated flower production the earliest, produced the highest number of fruits per plant, the most amount of fruit by weight, and had one of the highest TSS recorded (°Brix) (Figure 3). The overall growth of both basil and strawberry in media amended with 10 per cent vermichar, fertigated with compost tea, outperformed or was equal to the

The presence of vermichar has been proven to increase water and nutrient uptake in plants when incorporated into container media due to its porous structure and high surface area (Becagli et al., 2021; Huang et al., 2020; Joseph et al. 2021).

These results suggest the potential for vermichar to be used in other crops with similar results.

While this product is already marketed to home gardeners for container and raised bed vegetable growth, this could be another option for greenhouses attempting to grow without conventional fertilizers as part of their regular fertigating regimen.

Striking the right balance

A study on how electrical conductivity affects the cannabis plant

UNDERSTANDING EC

Electrical Conductivity (EC) is the measure of salts concentration in solution, in this case, water. Salts are the nutrients that have been dissolved in water, like potassium nitrate. Water moves via osmosis which travels from a low concentration of salts (EC) to a higher concentration of salts (EC). This means, in order for the roots to uptake the nutrients in the water, the roots must have a higher EC than the nutrient solution they are being fed.

(Ding, 2018)

Plant growth and development rely heavily on environmental conditions which affects things like their nutrient supply. Every plant species have different nutrient requirements. When looking at Cannabis Sativa, even different cultivars have different nutrient requirements. This is why it is so important to understand the plant you are working with. Knowing how to manipulate the EC, can

ABOVE

Image 1. Final Week from Section A

help a grower steer the plant in the direction that they would prefer.

If the EC of the water is higher than the roots, the plant is not taking in enough water, this can lead to smaller plants as water helps with cell elongation. If the EC of the water is too low, the plant will not be acquiring enough nutrients and can also lead to smaller plants. Therefore, there is a certain “goldilocks zone” that must be achieved of optimal plant health.

THE EXPERIMENT

Materials

• Nine clones of white shark

• Nine pots with promix soilless media

• Nutrient with adjusted EC

• Coloured tape

• Ruler

• Labelled tray containers

Methods

Nine clones were selected for their uniformity and healthiness. Clones were planted in promix, a soilless media. They were all labeled with their treatment name. Three plants were placed in each of the three treatment sections and labelled A B C. Plants were kept in vegetative stage.

Environmental Conditions

• 18 hours of LED light

• Temperature: Day of 20-22oC and night of 22-24oC

• CO2: 727 ppm

• Humidity: 55-67 per cent

• Custom elemental feed of AB Mix

Treatment conditions

• EC of 1.0mS/cam

• EC of 2.0mS/cm

• EC of 4.0mS/cm

Over the course of eight weeks, all plants were given their unique EC blend of varying water quantities, depending on how much the plant ‘drank’.

Plant height measurements, visual root and leaf health were recorded weekly. Wet weights were taken at the end of the experiment with dry weights to follow.

EXPECTED RESULTS

Cannabis plants grown at Niagara College’s Academic & Research cultivation

facility are typically fed within an EC range of 1.9 - 2.0. In this experiment, the treatment with the EC of 2.0 can be considered the standard that we compare the others to.

A study conducted by Anderson et al. set out to test five different cultivars under the ECs of: 0.33, 0.54, 0.96, 1.59, 2.22 and 2.85mS/cm (2021). They observed that their EC of 0.33 had the lowest growth, since there were no nutrients added and was just what their

water source had (Anderson et al., 2021). Aside from this, they found that plant height was progressively stunted as EC increased. They found that all plants that had a treatment above 0.96mS/cm were severely stunted in height and biomass. Our experimental design exceeds the previous study in EC levels. It is predicted that the plants with an EC of 4.0 will be the most affected. It does not appear that the plants in the EC treatment of 1.0 will be significantly impaired.

QUICK FACTS

What is EC?

Similar to ppm. However, EC measures the overall salt concentration in a solution. It is measured in millisiemens per centimetre (mS/cm).

What is osmosis?

Water moving from an area of low concentration to a higher concentration.

Optimals

Cannabis Sativa plants in our facility that are in soilless mix are kept in an EC range of 1.9 - 2mS/cm.

RESULTS

Water intake

The EC 2.0 treatment consumed the most water over eight weeks with a total average of 17,058.33mL. The EC 1.0 had a total overall average of 15,341.667mL and the EC 4.0 had an overall average of 11,308.333mL over eight weeks. (Table 1)

Plant height

The average plant height of EC 1.0 started at 10.33cm and grew to 62.66cm. EC 2.0 started at 10.66cm and grew to 64.66cm, having the most growth. EC 4.0 started at 11.33cm and grew to 60.33cm, the least amount of growth. The visual representation of the graph does not appear to show that much of a difference in final plant height. (Figure 1)

Plant weight

Plant weight was taken before and after the drying process. EC 2.0 had the highest biomass wet and dry at 276.8g and 66.85g respectively. EC 1.0 had a wet weight of 186.2g and dry of 49.85g. EC 4.0 had the lowest biomass wet and dry at 183.8g and 49.05g respectively. (Figure 2)

Plant appearance

• EC 1.0: Appears to have the most roots out of the treatments and appears healthy. The leaves, however, appear smaller and more yellow and curvy.

• EC 2.0: Appears to have an average root zone that looks healthy. Leaves also appear green and healthy.

TOP & RIGHT

Image 4. Roots and leaves taken at the end of the 8 weeks.

• EC 4.0: The roots appear a little more sparse than EC 2.0 and more brown in colour. Its leaves are green and slightly shorter than EC 2.0.

DISCUSSION

Knowing the correct EC for a particular plant is vital in knowing how to care for the plant.

Anderson et al showed that the optimal EC for their cultivars was 0.96. As they

comparable to our EC 1.0 and 2.0. It is interesting to note that our EC 4.0 plants did not suffer as greatly in height as the Anderson experiment. Our plants all stayed within a comparable height, varying less than 5cm.

What is interesting is that even though the plants were approximately the same height, the EC 2.0 had a significantly higher wet mass. However, after the drying process, it had a similar weight to the other treatments with only a difference of ~17g. The EC 2.0 plant did take in the most water overall and this could explain the heavier wet weight and the more drastic dry down weight.

24_010902_Greenhouse_Canada_DEC_CN

It was unexpected that the EC 1.0 did not intake as much water as the EC 2.0.

Water moves from a lower concentration to a higher concentration so it was expected that the lower EC plants would uptake more water.

The EC 1.0 plants also had the largest root zone so it would not be unreasonable to think they would ‘drink’ more water than the other treatments.

What was expected was that the EC 4.0 did intake the least amount of water overall. However, it does not seem like

this affected the plant significantly as the leaves, root zone and height do not seem impaired. Further research would need to be conducted to study the relationship between EC and water intake.

Our results do not suggest a significant difference in overall plant health. More testing should be done in future research.

It would also be interesting to see how these treatments affect the Cannabis plant when it moves into the flowering stage. Anderson’s research was conducted on

plants after the flowering stage and was only in a vegetative stage for two weeks. It is possible that EC would have more of an influence on the flowering plant.

Highlights from an unforgettable Canadian Greenhouse Conference

In early October, thousands of horticulture and greenhouse production professionals from across the globe gathered in Niagara Falls, Ont. for the 2024 Canadian Greenhouse Conference .

Once again, the sold-out trade show floor at the Niagara Falls Convention Centre transformed into a hive of networking and innovation, while the education sessions served as a platform for exploration and collaboration.

This year’s theme, Smart Growing, was exemplified and espoused at every turn. Starting with this year’s bus tour, which took attendees to operations across Southwestern Ontario, the agenda was clearly geared towards exposing attendees to a variety of highly efficient production facilities, giving them an opportunity to compare each operations’ priorities and approach to production.

BUSY BUS TOUR

First stop on the tour was Ridge Farms in Leamington where tomatoes are grown under glass year-round. This unlit growing facility, built in 2021, is outfitted with a number of programs to help monitor the crop environment and manage inputs, most notably their precision irrigation and fertigation system.

Our second stop on the bus tour was JEM Farms in Ruthven, Ont., where the main crops are English and mini cucumbers.

Head grower, Blake Fischer, and owner, Jamie Mastronardi, were happy to answer the multitude of questions from visitors fascinated by this pristine operation. JEM is also home to the twoacre Horteca R & D greenhouse where they are currently conducting lighting trials. Researchers

from the University of Windsor were on hand to discuss some of the studies taking place at Horteca and elsewhere, and to encourage growers to consider the possibility of partnering with the school on a number of projects.

The third stop of the day at Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens in Kingsville, Ont., came just in time for lunch. This fourth-generation garden centre/greenhouse/mini-putt/petting zoo/ arcade is also home to a delicious eatery that specializes in broasted chicken, upon which attendees dined as they took in the sights, sounds and extensive history of this family business. Owner, Terry Colasanti, was gracious enough to guide participants through his family’s extensive facilities and share some of his insights from decades of being in the business.

This year’s theme, ‘Smart Growing,’ was exemplified and espoused at every turn.

Finally, the last stop of the day was one of the most anticipated amongst the groups on the bus: Ontario Plants’ new greenhouse in Glencoe, Ont. It was a party-like atmosphere that greeted attendees as they got off the bus and stepped into this brand new, yet-tohouse-a-crop propagation facility. Guests were invited to indulge in a smorgasbord of treats before donning protective gear to tour the still-under-construction greenhouses. Pieter van Dijk, Ontario Plants’ COO was our group’s tour guide, and his enthusiasm for this project is truly infectious. He took much pride in showing our group how almost the entire production process there has been automated. It was a fitting exclamation point at the end of the bus tour and gave attendees a lot to talk about on the long ride back to the Falls where the trade show would kick off in earnest the following day.

crowds gathered in every corner of the convention centre as friends and colleagues connected and reunited. Coffee was flowing and the new green (and on-theme!) carpets of the tradeshow floor were rolled out in welcome.

The New Varieties Showcase, located outside the tradeshow floor and sponsored by Ball Seed and Dümmen

Orange, was lovingly curated and organized by the University of Guelph’s Rodger Tschanz, and served as a striking example of the beautiful and delicious products this industry is capable producing.

The kick-off of the tradeshow coincided with the launch of the education sessions; this year organized according to theme. Wednesday

morning’s sessions tackled energy innovations and explored lighting and managing light emissions; there was also an extensive session providing an update on the Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRV).

The afternoon presentations explored themes related to growing media, autonomous growing and landfill diversion.

“We had an amazing time,” wrote one anonymous commenter to event organizers. “It was truly one of the most productive shows I’ve attended.”

It’s a sentiment I’ve heard echoed elsewhere about this year’s conference.

Between the sessions that were organized with addressing grower concerns and production issues top of mind; the thoughtfully and meticulously planned bus tour; the bustling, sold-out trade show floor, the night life, and all the little details in between, this year’s event gave growers ample opportunity to branch out, explore and find the support and professional network one needs to succeed and grow in this always changing landscape.

Plans for the 2025 edition of the Canadian Greenhouse Conference are already well in the works. Stay tuned for more information on that in the coming months in these pages. In the meantime, mark your calendars as next year’s CGC is slated for Oct. 8 & 9, 2025 and we’ll look forward to seeing you there.

SMALL FOOTPRINT, big blooms

Frisia Flora thrives with quality products grown on five acres

A passion for horticulture, sustainability and efficiency that was born in a potato field in the Netherlands, has taken root in the Canadian greenhouse industry in the form of Frisia Flora Ltd.

What started as ‘side gig’ for Sietse Elsinga in 1995, this operation, located in Beamsville, Ont., has grown to become one of the province’s top producers of prefinished lavender and mandevilla, and all while operating on a five-acre property, and under 38,000 sq.-ft. of cover.

It’s a tiny but prolific operation that Elsinga has lovingly and determinedly developed in the spirit of innovation and efficiency. Together with his wife Petra of 32 years, and their three children, whenever they

could help out, have carved out a lean and productive operation.

“When you start out on shoestring, you have to keep on top of the financials,” he explains. “If you’re this size, you have to do everything right.”

With such a small margin for error, finding operational efficiencies at every step of the process, Elsinga insists, is the key. He says Petra plays an integral role in managing the company’s books and “makes sure I don’t overspend,” he said. In those early years, however, there was a lot of trial and error and learning things the hard way.

Elsinga sheepishly admits that he was a victim of “young ambition,” and lost a few crops to some of his “experiments.”

“When you’re the first generation

in this business, you don’t have a parent to ask. So, sometimes you try to plant something new,” he says, “and then you realize you’re doing it totally the wrong way and end up tossing the whole crop. That’s happened a couple of times.”

But when faced with those challenges and outcomes, Elsinga says, he viewed them as an opportunity to learn from his mistakes. And learn he did.

As a youth, and at his father’s urging, Elsinga pursued a postsecondary education in horticulture in the Netherlands.

“When I was in high school, my dad said, ‘you know, our farm is too small to continue, why don’t you go to horticulture school,’” he recalls. “At the time, I was already growing bedding plants for the whole neighbourhood in Dutch-style flat glass beds.”

After completing his polytechnic education, he went on to teacher’s college for horticulture but quickly learned he wasn’t “suited” to the profession. He worked for a time in the industry in the Netherlands through a work placement but in 1991, came to Canada to see where his passion might take him.

Shortly after arriving here, he found himself working at Balfour Greenhouses under the mentorship of Albert Grimm.

“He was actually the first person I worked with when I came to Canada. I learned a lot in the beginning from [Grimm],” Elsinga fondly remembers. “I still call him sometimes.” Melhem Sawaya, of Sawaya Gardens in Waterford, ON, is also amongst one of Elsinga’s mentors from his early years in the industry: “He was a big supporter. I could always go to him for help.”

SIDE PROJECT

From Balfour, Elsinga moved on to Westbrook, Northend then Jeffery’s. In 1995, he launched his ‘side gig’ on a rented property,

producing various plants but in 2000, purchased and moved to the property where Frisia Flora now operates.

“I was still working for Northend and [I] had two greenhouses here for a spring crop,” he said. “In 2007 is when I finally went on my own. I did those topiaries for many years, but for this size operation, it was a lot of labour. I survived, but I wasn’t getting ahead.”

It was in creating these topiaries, that Elsinga started working with lavender, a crop whose habit and input needs he discovered would better suit this smaller operation. He brought in and trialled several varieties and quickly became a member of the Ontario Lavender Association, which, he says, was a big turning point in his business.

“[It was the] best investment I ever made because I picked up quite a few customers at that first meeting,” he admits.

From that point on, Elsinga worked

tirelessly on improving the quality of his products and efficiencies on the Frisia production line. Amongst one of his biggest priorities when ensuring smooth production, is being vigilant about bringing the highest-quality and cleanest

plant material into the greenhouse.

“I buy only unrooted cuttings,” he insists. “I’m hesitant to buy rooted material because rooted material, you know, has an extra step and more risk of additional insect and disease pressure.

He says he works mostly with Ball to secure materials because he feels their service, resources and selection is great.

Elsinga is also a licensed propagator of some varieties of lavender and mandevilla. He is one of a few growers who still grows yellow mandevilla, a variety well known for its challenges.

“Some of these cuttings might never produce a shoot,” he said referring to a young crop currently in his propagation room. He still works with the finicky variety, though with an expectation that yields might not be as robust as with other varieties.

“Customers want the colour. My biggest customer wants this. It’s beautiful,” he says.

BIOS ARE BEST

Another priority for the grower, and perhaps the one he spends the most time worrying about, is biological pest control. In this arena, Elsinga credits renowned biological control specialist and friend,

Marvin Elsinga is a permanent fixture in the Frisia greenhouses. His dual role as greeter and head of security demands much of his time.

Ronald Valentin, as being a big source of inspiration and guidance.

“Biological is my first approach: whether it’s soil beneficials or biologicals,” he said, noting that the costs of this can add up, especially if a new pest threat arises. “I use up to 10 beneficials on a weekly basis in this greenhouse.”

Elsinga notes due to pest behaviour and their preferences for different varieties it can be a real juggling act to find the right balance, but in addition to Valentin, he’s found a lot of support from IPM specialists at supply companies and research facilities to inform this ongoing process.

It is a proactive approach thar he says is paying off in big ways for Frisia.

“No pesticides were used at all this summer,” he claims. “You have to get away from the reactionary approach, right?”

While it appears Elsinga has hit his stride in terms of streamlining his production process, his smaller operation still faces some significant hurdles.

MORE WITH LESS

When it comes to expanding and building out some of Frisia Flora’s production capabilities, Elsinga says finding the contractors or suppliers willing or able to accommodate an operation of this size can be a challenge.

“I still haven’t lined the pond yet, because I’d love to have

rainwater. Just to get somebody over here to do a small project like that, it’s been impossible since COVID, really,” he said. “When you’re a small operation, it’s hard to get stuff like that done.”

A lot of that work, Elsinga says, falls to him and his own resourcefulness.

Shipping is also another problem for the grower who ships out anywhere between 500,000 to close to 750,000 plants annually. Much of his material, Elsinga says, is shipped locally and can therefore be done by himself or, if they aren’t working, one of his sons or daughter. It’s when shipments are bound for further

BY

destinations that he hits roadblocks.

“Shipping is the hardest part for me, because sometimes you have a couple cases that have to go to Ottawa and I can’t take it,” he said, noting that for smaller shipments like this, bigger carriers are not an option. “I can’t always rely on couriers either because every year I have one or two shipments that are completely destroyed or shipped upside down.”

Like all greenhouse operations, attracting and retaining skilled labour is an ongoing

issue at Frisia. The business currently employs two full-time employees (one of whom has been with Frisia for seven years) plus Elsinga. This is supplemented with part-time workers as needed.

INNOVATION AND EXPLORATION

Despite these challenges, occasional setbacks and the countless hours Elsinga puts into his greenhouse operation, it’s clear there’s no place he’d rather be. Throughout the greenhouse, Elsinga

happily points out some of his current experiments and passion projects.

One project he seems particularly fond of is his rosemary topiaries, a project he scrapped years ago that he recently resurrected because topiaries are becoming more popular amongst consumers. “I did those 10 years ago or something,” he recalls. “Ended up throwing them out because they weren’t that popular. And heck, I’m trying them again this year.”

It’s that spirit of providing impeccable service and quality to his customers, that sets this operation and its products apart. Elsinga’s obvious love of horticulture and experimentation will ensure this small operation’s success well into the future.

“I love plants. I love growing and I’m always looking at new products,” he says. “I don’t have any plans for retirement. I’m not that old yet.”

Description: Lambert Peat Moss Inc., has been in business since the year 1928 and has thousands of acres in many locations that are situated on the North and South shores of the St. Lawrence River. The separations of these locations allow us to continue harvesting should one or more of these bogs be affected by inclement weather. Presently, only 30% of our bogs are in production. This small percentage of prepared areas provides us with the ability to harvest peat for many years with assurances of continued and consistent quality sphagnum peat.

With our company having been present in the growing industry for quite a few decades, the name Lambert is synonymous both to the retail and professional users. We offer nine grades of peat moss from clean “Fine Grind” to a coarse, fibrous peat longed for by growers throughout. For the last couple of years, utilizing our “OMRI” certified peat, we have formulated and prepared custom blends for customers wishing to grow in “Organic” medias.

OGVG appoints Daniel Terlizzese as new Research, Innovation & Plant Protection Lead

Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) have announced Daniel Terlizzese as their new Research, Innovation & Plant Protection Lead.

In a recent release, OGVG announced Terlizzese’s appointment where he will be responsible for leading research projects, developing solutions for greenhouse vegetable production, and ensuring the implementation of effective plant production strategies.

Terilizzese officially joined OGVG on November 4, bringing his Master of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Guelph, along with his expertise in greenhouse crop management, plant physiology and innovative agricultural

practices to the job.

In his previous roles, Terlizzese has managed greenhouse crop growth and yield, collaborating with universities and research centers.

His most recent position was as an Agronomist with Montreal-based Sollum Technologies which involved enhancing crop growth and yield through dynamic LED lighting and collaborating on novel research projects.

He has worked at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, where he managed greenhouse crop growth and conducted plant physiological measurements, and Great Lakes Greenhouses, where he deigned research trials to improve crop production.

His work has been recognized at various conferences, including the Canadian Greenhouse Conference, where he won first prize in the 2023 student poster competition.

“We are thrilled to welcome Daniel to our team,” said Richard Lee, executive director at OGVG, in the release.

Greenhouse growers urged to keep eye out for Spotted lanternfly

Greenhouse growers are being urged to keep an eye out for the invasive Spotted lanternfly (SPL), a sap-feeding pest that can have a devastating impact on trees and crops.

According to a recent blog post by OMAFA’s Cara McCreary, and shared on ONGreenhouseVegetables.ca, while this pest is not a big concern for crops grown in the greenhouse, it is important to keep an eye out to protect the community.

“Although not considered a huge threat

to our greenhouse crops, we can still do our part in our communities,” McCreary writes.

“If you enjoy the benefits of orchards, vineyards, agroforestry or ornamental nurseries or you have neighbours, friends or family that produce these commodities, then you are part of this community.”

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), in an effort to prevent its introduction and spread into Canada, regulated

the spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula, Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) and it has been a quarantine pest since 2018. According to the agency, SPL feeds on more than 100 species of trees and plants and should be reported to them immediately if suspected.

What do you spend your time looking at?

Over the years, I’ve been very blessed to have been involved with many sectors of the horticulture industry. Nursery, soft fruit, bedding and potted ornamentals, cut flowers, mushrooms. Propagation, production, marketing, education. I even explored coffee, tea and rice production in East Africa for a year and gained some insight into tropical fruits in Vietnam for a short stint. Fantastic fun. Each area had their specific needs that always made horticulture such an engaging, inspiring and rewarding career choice for me. It still does. Perhaps, for me though, the only area that didn’t go well was spending several weeks brushing a foot of snow off the crowns of Brussels’ sprouts and cabbage plants, high upon the UK Yorkshire Wolds in December, collecting samples for Ministry of Agriculture brassica leaf disease surveys. Nothing against field veg. farming, but I’m pretty sure that experience contributed to me swiftly heading into a career in greenhouse crop production.

In the food sector, I’ve very much enjoyed both modern greenhouse production and the organic farm community. In both, the more I’ve learned, the more I realise that I have even more to learn. There has never been a dull season. And part of that learning process is found in the enjoyment of talking to people and being privileged to share in their collective

is much less clear is the fundamental issue and why it’s having such a big impact over such a short time and why now? Some growers are concluding that the growing medium is having a significant part to play. One grower shared that by allowing roots of infected plants growing in an inert medium to move into an organic-based medium (coir), there is a marked improvement in root health. Perhaps there is more biological resilience imparted from the organic medium. Or is it just clean at that point? Or something else completely. I don’t know – I have no empirical evidence to support one or the other. I’m not sure anyone does, to be honest.

“I’m optimistic that there’s a place for all our production methods.”

knowledge. But working in these two specific ‘sectors’ has sometimes brought conflict. Proponents of both ‘systems’ have their views, with these views often driven by accumulated knowledge and experience, which in turn builds passion. Or is it passion driving the knowledge? Either way, sometimes this passion may spill over into a lack of willingness to understand the others’ position. Sophisticated technology-based, greenhouse hydroponics versus lower tech input, knowledge-based, organic systems. It seems to be a ‘one way or the other’ stance.

If you’ve been anywhere near a hydroponic greenhouse pepper grower in Canada in the last few months, conversation at some point probably came around to the hot topic of severe root issues caused by Fusarium. There’s no disputing the very severe problems it has caused and continues to do. What

But the actual medium is not my point today. I have seen all kinds of growing media used with great success. [I even recall one grower in the south of England growing cucumbers in bags filled with old socks.] My point? Well, I thought the (hydroponic) grower observation mentioned above was intriguing. Perhaps we don’t have to view one system as ‘the answer’. Isn’t there room for both? (And more?) Or perhaps, is there some middle ground where all growers can be comfortable with a highly efficient, environmentally sound, long-term ‘sustainable’ system that also makes great economic sense not just for producers but also for consumers? Personally, I don’t expect there to be one solution to the food security issue. I’m optimistic that there’s a place for all our production methods that collectively allow the food system to work for the benefit of everyone. I would love to see proponents of all sides of the food conversation (in particular the organic and so-called ‘conventional’ corners) learn from, and build with, each other.

Another hydroponic pepper grower, struggling with crop losses from Fusarium, recently said to me that perhaps we don’t take enough time looking at the roots. He didn’t say this, but it was kind of ‘out of sight, out of mind’, as the saying goes. Yet, indeed, the growing medium is a cornerstone of any agricultural practice. Perhaps we should spend the same amount of time looking below ‘soil’ level as we do looking at the tops.
